Nonassociative analogs of Lie groupoids

We introduce nonassociative geometric objects generalising naturally Lie groupoids and called (smooth) quasiloopoids and loopoids. We prove that the tangent bundles of smooth loopoids are canonically smooth loopoids again (it is nontrivial in the case of loopoids). We show also that this is not true if the cotangent bundles are concerned. After providing a few natural constructions, we show how the Lie-like functor associates with loopoids skew-algebroids and almost Lie algebroids and how discrete mechanics on Lie groupoids can be reformulated in the nonassociative case.

Odd Connections on Supermanifolds: Existence and relation with Affine Connections

The notion of an odd quasi-connection on a supermanifold, which is loosely an affine connection that carries non-zero Grassmann parity, is examined. Their torsion and curvature are defined, however, in general, they are not tensors. A special class of such generalised connections, referred to as odd connections in this paper, have torsion and curvature tensors. Part of the structure is an odd involution of the tangent bundle of the supermanifold and this puts drastic restrictions on the supermanifolds that admit odd connections. In particular, they must have equal number of even and odd dimensions. Amongst other results, we show that an odd connection is defined, up to an odd tensor field of type $(1,2)$, by an affine connection and an odd endomorphism of the tangent bundle. Thus, the theory of odd connections and affine connections are not completely separate theories. As an example relevant to physics, it is shown that $N= 1$ super-Minkowski spacetime admits a natural odd connection.

Riemannian structures on $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-manifolds

Very loosely, $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-manifolds are `manifolds' with $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-graded coordinates and their sign rule is determined by the scalar product of their $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-degrees. A little more carefully, such objects can be understood within a sheaf-theoretical framework, just as supermanifolds can, but with subtle differences. In this paper, we examine the notion of a Riemannian $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-manifold, i.e., a $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-manifold equipped with a Riemannian metric that may carry non-zero $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-degree. We show that the basic notions and tenets of Riemannian geometry directly generalise to the setting of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-geometry. For example, the Fundamental Theorem holds in this higher graded setting. We point out the similarities and differences with Riemannian supergeometry.

Lie groupoids in information geometry

We demonstrate that the proper general setting for contrast (potential) functions in statistical and information geometry is the one provided by Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. The contrast functions are defined on Lie groupoids and give rise to two-forms and three-forms on the corresponding Lie algebroid. If the two-form is non-degenerate, it defines a `pseudo-Riemannian' metric on the Lie algebroid and a family of Lie algebroid torsion-free connections, including the Levi-Civita connection of the metric. In this framework, the two-point functions are just functions on the pair groupoid $M\ti M$ with the `standard' metric and affine connection on the Lie algebroid $\sT M$. We study also reductions of such systems and infinite-dimensional examples. In particular, we find a contrast function defining the Fubini-Study metric on the Hilbert projective space.

Polarisation of Graded Bundles

We construct the full linearisation functor which takes a graded bundle of degree $k$ (a particular kind of graded manifold) and produces a $k$-fold vector bundle. We fully characterise the image of the full linearisation functor and show that we obtain a subcategory of $k$-fold vector bundles consisting of symmetric $k$-fold vector bundles equipped with a family of morphisms indexed by the symmetric group ${\mathbb S}_k$. Interestingly, for the degree 2 case this additional structure gives rise to the notion of a symplectical double vector bundle, which is the skew-symmetric analogue of a metric double vector bundle. We also discuss the related case of fully linearising $N$-manifolds, and how one can use the full linearisation functor to "superise" a graded bundle.

The category of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-supermanifolds

In Physics and in Mathematics $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-gradings, $n>1$, appear in various fields. The corresponding sign rule is determined by the `scalar product' of the involved $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-degrees. The $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-Supergeometry exhibits challenging differences with the classical one: nonzero degree even coordinates are not nilpotent, and even (resp., odd) coordinates do not necessarily commute (resp., anticommute) pairwise. In this article we develop the foundations of the theory: we define $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-supermanifolds and provide examples in the ringed space and coordinate settings. We thus show that formal series are the appropriate substitute for nilpotency. Moreover, the class of $\mathbb{Z}_2^\bullet$-supermanifolds is closed with respect to the tangent and cotangent functors. We explain that any $n$-fold vector bundle has a canonical `superization' to a $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-supermanifold and prove that the fundamental theorem describing supermorphisms in terms of coordinates can be extended to the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-context.

Graded Bundles in the Category of Lie Groupoids

We define and make initial study of Lie groupoids equipped with a compatible homogeneity (or graded bundle) structure, such objects we will refer to as weighted Lie groupoids. One can think of weighted Lie groupoids as graded manifolds in the category of Lie groupoids. This is a very rich geometrical theory with numerous natural examples. Note that $\mathcal{VB}$-groupoids, extensively studied in the recent literature, form just the particular case of weighted Lie groupoids of degree one. We examine the Lie theory related to weighted groupoids and weighted Lie algebroids, objects defined in a previous publication of the authors, which are graded manifolds in the category of Lie algebroids, showing that they are naturally related via differentiation and integration. In this work we also make an initial study of weighted Poisson-Lie groupoids and weighted Lie bi-algebroids, as well as weighted Courant algebroids.

Linear duals of graded bundles and higher analogues of (Lie) algebroids

Graded bundles are a class of graded manifolds which represent a natural generalisation of vector bundles and include the higher order tangent bundles as canonical examples. We present and study the concept of the linearisation of graded bundle which allows us to define the notion of the linear dual of a graded bundle. They are examples of double structures, graded-linear ($\mathcal{GL}$) bundles, including double vector bundles as a particular case. On $\mathcal{GL}$-bundles we define what we shall call weighted algebroids, which are to be understood as algebroids in the category of graded bundles. They can be considered as a geometrical framework for higher order Lagrangian mechanics. Canonical examples are reductions of higher tangent bundles of Lie groupoids. Weighted algebroids represent also a generalisation of $\mathcal{VB}$-algebroids as defined by Gracia-Saz & Mehta and the $\mathcal{LA}$-bundles of Mackenzie. The resulting structures are strikingly similar to Voronov's higher Lie algebroids, however our approach does not require the initial structures to be defined on supermanifolds.

$\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-Supergeometry I: Manifolds and Morphisms

In Physics and in Mathematics $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-gradings, $n \geq 2$, do appear quite frequently. The corresponding sign rules are determined by the `scalar product' of the involved $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-degrees. The present paper is the first of a series on $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-Supergeometry. The new theory exhibits challenging differences with the classical one: nonzero degree even coordinates are not nilpotent, and even (resp., odd) coordinates do not necessarily commute (resp., anticommute) pairwise (the parity is the parity of the total degree). It is based on the hierarchy: ` $\mathbb{Z}_2^0$-Supergeometry (classical differential Geometry) contains the germ of $\mathbb{Z}_2^1$-Supergeometry (standard Supergeometry), which in turn contains the sprout of $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-Supergeometry, etc.' The $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-supergeometric viewpoint provides deeper insight and simplified solutions; interesting relations with Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Mechanics are expected. In this article, we define $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-supermanifolds and provide examples in the atlas, the ringed space and coordinate settings. We thus show that formal series are the appropriate substitute for nilpotency. Moreover, the category of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-supermanifolds is closed with respect to the tangent and cotangent functors. The fundamental theorem describing supermorphisms in terms of coordinates is extended to the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-context.

$\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-Supergeometry II: Batchelor-Gawedzki Theorem

Quite a number of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-gradings, $n\geq 2$, appear in Physics and in Mathematics. The corresponding sign rules are given by the `scalar product' of the involved $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-degrees. The new theory exhibits challenging differences with the classical one: nonzero degree even coordinates are not nilpotent, and even (resp., odd) coordinates do not necessarily commute (resp., anticommute) pairwise (the parity is the parity of the total degree). Formal series are the appropriate substitute for nilpotency; the category of $\mathbb{Z}_2^\bullet$-manifolds is closed with respect to the tangent and cotangent functors. The $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-supergeometric viewpoint provides deeper insight and simplified solutions; interesting relations with Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Mechanics are expected. In this article, we introduce split $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-manifolds as intrinsic superizations of $\mathbb{Z}_2^n\setminus\{0\}$-graded vector bundles and prove that, conversely, any $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-manifold is noncanonically split. We thus provide a complete proof of the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-extension of the so-called Batchelor-Gawedzki Theorem.

Higher order mechanics on graded bundles

In this paper we develop a geometric approach to higher order mechanics on graded bundles in both, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, via the recently discovered weighted algebroids. We present the corresponding Tulczyjew triple for this higher order situation and derive in this framework the phase equations from an arbitrary (also singular) Lagrangian or Hamiltonian, as well as the Euler-Lagrange equations. As important examples, we geometrically derive the classical higher order Euler-Lagrange equations and analogous reduced equations for invariant higher order Lagrangians on Lie groupoids.

Convex bodies of states and maps

We give a general solution to the question when the convex hulls of orbits of quantum states on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space under unitary actions of a compact group have a non-empty interior in the surrounding space of all density states. The same approach can be applied to study convex combinations of quantum channels. The importance of both problems stems from the fact that, usually, only sets with non-vanishing volumes in the embedding spaces of all states or channels are of practical importance. For the group of local transformations on a bipartite system we characterize maximally entangled states by properties of a convex hull of orbits through them. We also compare two partial characteristics of convex bodies in terms of largest balls and maximum volume ellipsoids contained in them and show that, in general, they do not coincide. Separable states, mixed-unitary channels and k-entangled states are also considered as examples of our techniques.

The Supergeometry of Loday Algebroids

A new concept of Loday algebroid (and its pure algebraic version - Loday pseudoalgebra) is proposed and discussed in comparison with other similar structures present in the literature. The structure of a Loday pseudoalgebra and its natural reduction to a Lie pseudoalgebra is studied. Further, Loday algebroids are interpreted as homological vector fields on a `supercommutative manifold' associated with a shuffle product and the corresponding Cartan calculus is introduced. Several examples, including Courant algebroids, Grassmann-Dorfman and twisted Courant-Dorfman brackets, as well as algebroids induced by Nambu-Poisson structures, are given.

Mixed superposition rules and the Riccati hierarchy

Mixed superposition rules, i.e., functions describing the general solution of a system of first-order differential equations in terms of a generic family of particular solutions of first-order systems and some constants, are studied. The main achievement is a generalization of the celebrated Lie-Scheffers Theorem, characterizing systems admitting a mixed superposition rule. This somehow unexpected result says that such systems are exactly Lie systems, i.e., they admit a standard superposition rule. This provides a new and powerful tool for finding Lie systems, which is applied here to studying the Riccati hierarchy and to retrieving some known results in a more efficient and simpler way.

Dirac Algebroids in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics

We present a unified approach to constrained implicit Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems based on the introduced concept of Dirac algebroid. The latter is a certain almost Dirac structure associated with the Courant algebroid on the dual $E^\ast$ to a vector bundle $E$. If this almost Dirac structure is integrable (Dirac), we speak about a Dirac-Lie algebroid. The bundle $E$ plays the role of the bundle of kinematic configurations (quasi-velocities), while the bundle $E^\ast$ - the role of the phase space. This setting is totally intrinsic and does not distinguish between regular and singular Lagrangians. The constraints are part of the framework, so the general approach does not change when nonholonomic constraints are imposed, and produces the (implicit) Euler-Lagrange and Hamilton equations in an elegant geometric way. The scheme includes all important cases of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems, no matter if they are with or without constraints, autonomous or non-autonomous etc., as well as their reductions; in particular, constrained systems on Lie algebroids. we prove also some basic facts about the geometry of Dirac and Dirac-Lie algebroids.

Entanglement for multipartite systems of indistinguishable particles

We analyze the concept of entanglement for multipartite system with bosonic and fermionic constituents and its generalization to systems with arbitrary parastatistics. We use the representation theory of symmetry groups to formulate a unified approach to this problem in terms of simple tensors with appropriate symmetry. For an arbitrary parastatistics, we define the S-rank generalizing the notion of the Schmidt rank. The S-rank, defined for all types of tensors, serves for distinguishing entanglement of pure states. In addition, for Bose and Fermi statistics, we construct an analog of the Jamiolkowski isomorphism.

Pontryagin Maximum Principle - a generalization

The fundamental theorem of the theory of optimal control, the Pontryagin maximum principle (PMP), is extended to the setting of almost Lie (AL) algebroids, geometrical objects generalizing Lie algebroids. This formulation of the PMP yields, in particular, a scheme comprising reductions of optimal control problems similar to the reduction for the rigid body in analytical mechanics. On the other hand, in the presented approach the reduced and unreduced PMPs are parts of the same universal formalism. The framework is based on a very general concept of homotopy of measurable paths and the geometry of AL algebroids.

Double Affine Bundles

A theory of double affine and special double affine bundles, i.e. differential manifolds with two compatible (special) affine bundle structures, is developed as an affine counterpart of the theory of double vector bundles. The motivation and basic examples come from Analytical Mechanics, where double affine bundles have been recognized as a proper geometrical tool in a frame-independent description of many important systems. Different approaches to the (special) double affine bundles are compared and carefully studied together with the problems of double vector bundle models and hulls, duality, and relations to associated phase spaces, contact structures, and other canonical constructions.

Lie families: theory and applications

We analyze families of non-autonomous systems of first-order ordinary differential equations admitting a common time-dependent superposition rule, i.e., a time-dependent map expressing any solution of each of these systems in terms of a generic set of particular solutions of the system and some constants. We next study relations of these families, called Lie families, with the theory of Lie and quasi-Lie systems and apply our theory to provide common time-dependent superposition rules for certain Lie families.

Higher vector bundles and multi-graded symplectic manifolds

A natural explicit condition is given ensuring that an action of the multiplicative monoid of non-negative reals on a manifold F comes from homotheties of a vector bundle structure on F, or, equivalently, from an Euler vector field. This is used in showing that double (or higher) vector bundles present in the literature can be equivalently defined as manifolds with a family of commuting Euler vector fields. Higher vector bundles can be therefore defined as manifolds admitting certain $\N^n$-grading in the structure sheaf. Consequently, multi-graded (super)manifolds are canonically associated with higher vector bundles that is an equivalence of categories. Of particular interest are symplectic multi-graded manifolds which are proven to be associated with cotangent bundles. Duality for higher vector bundles is then explained by means of the cotangent bundles as they contain the collection of all possible duals. This gives, moreover, higher generalizations of the known `universal Legendre transformation' T*E->T*E*, identifying the cotangent bundles of all higher vector bundles in duality. The symplectic multi-graded manifolds, equipped with certain homological Hamiltonian vector fields, lead to an alternative to Roytenberg's picture generalization of Lie bialgebroids, Courant brackets, Drinfeld doubles and can be viewed as geometrical base for higher BRST and Batalin-Vilkovisky formalisms. This is also a natural framework for studying n-fold Lie algebroids and related structures.

Searching for extremal PPT entangled states

We study extremality in various sets of states that have positive partial transposes. One of the tools we use for this purpose is the recently formulated criterion allowing to judge if a given state is extremal in the set of PPT states. First we investigate qubit--ququart states and show that the only candidates for extremal PPT entangled states (PPTES) have ranks of the state and its partial transposition (5,5) or (5,6) (equivalently (6,5)). Then, examples of extremal states of (5,5) type and the so--called edge states of type (5,6) are provided. We also make an attempt to explore the set of PPT states with ranks (5,6). Finally, we discuss what are the possible configurations of ranks of density matrices and their respective partial transposition in general three-qubit and four-qubit symmetric states for which there may exist extremal entangled PPT states. For instance in the first case we show that the only possibilities are (4,4,4) and (4,4,5).

Wigner's Theorem and geometry of extreme positive maps

We consider transformation maps on the space of states which are symmetries in the sense of Wigner. Due to the convex nature of the space of states, the set of these maps has a convex structure. We investigate the possibility of a complete characterization of extreme maps of this convex body, to be able to contribute to the classification of positive maps. Our study provides a variant of Wigner's theorem originally proved for ray transformations in Hilbert spaces.

The Schroedinger operator as a generalized Laplacian

The Schroedinger operators on the Newtonian space-time are defined in a way which make them independent on the class of inertial observers. In this picture the Schroedinger operators act not on functions on the space-time but on sections of certain one-dimensional complex vector bundle -- the Schroedinger line bundle. This line bundle has trivializations indexed by inertial observers and is associated with an U(1)-principal bundle with an analogous list of trivializations -- the Schroedinger principal bundle. For the Schroedinger principal bundle a natural differential calculus for `wave forms' is developed that leads to a natural generalization of the concept of Laplace-Beltrami operator associated with a pseudo-Riemannian metric. The free Schroedinger operator turns out to be the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated with a naturally distinguished invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric on the Schroedinger principal bundle. The presented framework is proven to be strictly related to the frame-independent formulation of analytical Newtonian mechanics and Hamilton-Jacobi equations, that makes a bridge between the classical and quantum theory.

Variational calculus with constraints on general algebroids

Variational calculus on a vector bundle E equipped with a structure of a general algebroid is developed, together with the corresponding analogs of Euler-Lagrange equations. Constrained systems are introduced in the variational and in the geometrical setting. The constrained Euler-Lagrange equations are derived for analogs of holonomic, vakonomic and nonholonomic constraints. This general model covers majority of first-order Lagrangian systems which are present in the literature and reduces to the standard variational calculus and the Euler-Lagrange equations in Classical Mechanics for E=TM.

AV-differential geometry: Euler-Lagrange equations

A general, consistent and complete framework for geometrical formulation of mechanical systems is proposed, based on certain structures on affine bundles (affgebroids) that generalize Lie algebras and Lie algebroids. This scheme covers and unifies various geometrical approaches to mechanics in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian pictures, including time-dependent lagrangians and hamiltonians. In our approach, lagrangians and hamiltonians are, in general, sections of certain $\R$-principal bundles, and the solutions of analogs of Euler-Lagrange equations are curves in certain affine bundles. The correct geometrical and frame-independent description of Newtonian Mechanics is of this type.

On quantum and classical Poisson algebras

Results on derivations and automorphisms of some quantum and classical Poisson algebras, as well as characterizations of manifolds by the Lie structure of such algebras, are revisited and extended. We prove in particular somehow unexpected fact that the algebras of linear differential operators acting on smooth sections of two real vector bundles of rank 1 are isomorphic as Lie algebras if and only if the base manifolds are diffeomorphic, independently whether the line bundles themselves are isomorphic or not.

Poisson structures on the cotangent bundle of a Lie group or a principal bundle and their reductions

On a cotangent bundle $T\sp*G$ of a Lie group $G$ one can describe the standard Liouville form $θ$ and the symplectic form $d θ$ in terms of the right Maurer Cartan form and the left moment mapping (of the right action of $G$ on itself), and also in terms of the left Maurer-Cartan form and the right moment mapping, and also the Poisson structure can be written in related quantities. This leads to a wide class of exact symplectic stuctures on $T\sp*G$ and to Poisson structures by replacing the canonical momenta of the right or left actions of $G$ on itself by arbitrary ones, followed by reduction (to $G$ cross a Weyl-chamber, e.g.). This method also works on principal bundles.
