Spontaneously Broken Subsystem Symmetries

We investigate the spontaneous breaking of subsystem symmetries directly in the context of continuum field theories by calculating the correlation function of charged operators. Our methods confirm the lack of spontaneous symmetry breaking in some of the existing continuum field theories with subsystem symmetries, as had previously been established based on a careful analysis of the spectrum. We present some novel continuum field theory constructions that do exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking whenever allowed by general principles. These interesting patterns of symmetry breaking occur despite the fact that all the theories we study are non-interacting.

Two Applications of Nilpotent Higgsing in Class-S

We introduce a class of Higgs-branch RG flows in theories of class-S, which flow between $d=4$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs of the same ADE type. We discuss two applications of this class of RG flows: 1) determining the current-algebra levels in SCFTs where they were previously unknown - a program we carry out for the class-S theories of type $E_6$ and $E_7$ - and 2) constructing a multitude of examples of pairs of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs whose "conventional invariants" coincide. We disprove the conjecture of [1] that the global form of the flavour symmetry group is a reliable diagnostic for determining when two such theories are isomorphic.

Distinquishing 4d N=2 SCFTs

We construct a family of examples of pairs of 4d N=2 SCFTs whose graded Coulomb branch dimensions, Weyl-anomaly coefficients and flavour symmetry algebras and levels coincide, but which are nonetheless distinct SCFTs. The difference (detectable by the superconformal index) can occur at arbitrarily high order. We argue that it is, however, reflected in a difference in the global form of the flavour symmetry groups.

On the BPS Spectrum of the Rank-1 Minahan-Nemeschansky Theories

The F-theory realization of the rank-1 Minahan Nemeschansky (MN) $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ theories leads to a description of the BPS states on the Coulomb branch in terms of Type IIB $(p,q)$-string networks. Subject to a simple ansatz for the types of networks which can occur, we study the representations of the flavor symmetry group which occur in the BPS spectrum. The results we find for the $E_6$ and $E_7$ theories are in perfect agreement with previous calculations by other methods (in particular, we find that arbitrarily large representations occur), but our scheme is easier to implement and more computationally efficient. The string network picture also gives a possible explanation of the experimental observation that in rank-1 MN theories, BPS states whose charge is $n$ times a primitive charge occur with BPS index divisible by $(-1)^{n+1} n$.

Tinkertoys for the Z3-twisted D4 Theory

Among the simple Lie algebras, $D_4$ is distinguished as the unique one whose group of outer-automorphisms is bigger than $\mathbb{Z}_2$. We study the compactifications of the $D_4$ (2,0) Theory on a punctured Riemann surface, $C$, with outer-automorphism twists around cycles of $C$ lying in $\mathbb{Z}_3\subset \text{Aut}(D_4)= S_3$. The resulting 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs have a number of new and interesting properties. As byproduct, we discover a new rank-1 $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT with flavour symmetry group $SU(4)$.

A Family of $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ Interacting SCFTs from the Twisted $A_{2N}$ Series

We find an infinite family of $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ interacting superconformal field theories which enter the description of the strong-coupling limit of $SU(2N+1)$ gauge theories with hypermultiplets in the $\wedge^2(\square)+\text{Sym}^2(\square)$ . These theories arise from the compactification of the $6D$ $(2,0)$ theory of type $A_{2N}$ on a sphere with two full twisted punctures and one minimal untwisted puncture. For $N=1$, this theory is the "new" rank-1 SCFT with $Δ(u)=3$ of Argyres and Wittig. Using the superconformal index, we finally pin down the properties of this theory.

Seiberg-Witten for $Spin(n)$ with Spinors

$\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $Spin(n)$ gauge theory admits hypermultiplets in spinor representations of the gauge group, compatible with $β\leq0$, for $n\leq 14$. The theories with $β<0$ can be obtained as mass-deformations of the $β=0$ theories, so it is of greatest interest to construct the $β=0$ theories. In previous works, we discussed the $n\leq8$ theories. Here, we turn to the $9\leq n\leq 14$ cases. By compactifying the $D_N$ (2,0) theory on a 4-punctured sphere, we find Seiberg-Witten solutions to almost all of the remaining cases. There are five theories, however, which do not seem to admit a realization from six dimensions.

Tinkertoys for the $E_6$ Theory

Compactifying the 6-dimensional (2,0) superconformal field theory, of type ADE, on a Riemann surface, $C$, with codimension-2 defect operators at points on $C$, yields a 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theory. An outstanding problem is to classify the 4D theories one obtains, in this way, and to understand their properties. In this paper, we turn our attention to the $E_6$ (2,0) theory, which (unlike the A- and D-series) has no realization in terms of M5-branes. Classifying the 4D theories amounts to classifying all of the 3-punctured spheres ("fixtures"), and the cylinders that connect them, that can occur in a pants-decomposition of $C$. We find 904 fixtures: 19 corresponding to free hypermultiplets, 825 corresponding to isolated interacting SCFTs (with no known Lagrangian description) and 60 "mixed fixtures", corresponding to a combination of free hypermultiplets and an interacting SCFT. Of the 825 interacting fixtures, we list only the 139 "interesting" ones. As an application, we study the strong coupling limits of the Lagrangian field theories: $E_6$ with 4 hypermultiplets in the $27$ and $F_4$ with 3 hypermultiplets in the $26$.

Three Dimensional Mirror Symmetry and Partition Function on $S^3$

We provide non-trivial checks of $\mathcal{N}=4, D=3$ mirror symmetry in a large class of quiver gauge theories whose Type IIB (Hanany-Witten) descriptions involve D3 branes ending on orbifold/orientifold 5-planes at the boundary. From the M-theory perspective, such theories can be understood in terms of coincident M2 branes sitting at the origin of a product of an A-type and a D-type ALE (Asymtotically Locally Euclidean) space with G-fluxes. Families of mirror dual pairs, which arise in this fashion, can be labeled as $(A_{m-1},D_n)$, where $m$ and $n$ are integers. For a large subset of such infinite families of dual theories, corresponding to generic values of $n\geq 4$, arbitrary ranks of the gauge groups and varying $m$, we test the conjectured duality by proving the precise equality of the $S^3$ partition functions for dual gauge theories in the IR as functions of masses and FI parameters. The mirror map for a given pair of mirror dual theories can be read off at the end of this computation and we explicitly present these for the aforementioned examples. The computation uses non-trivial identities of hyperbolic functions including certain generalizations of Cauchy determinant identity and Schur's Pfaffian identity, which are discussed in the paper.

Tinkertoys for the D_N series

We describe a procedure for classifying 4D N=2 superconformal theories of the type introduced by Davide Gaiotto. Any punctured curve, C, on which the 6D (2,0) SCFT is compactified, may be decomposed into 3-punctured spheres, connected by cylinders. The 4D theories, which arise, can be characterized by listing the "matter" theories corresponding to 3-punctured spheres, the simple gauge group factors, corresponding to cylinders, and the rules for connecting these ingredients together. Different pants decompositions of $ correspond to different S-duality frames for the same underlying family of 4D N=2 SCFTs. In a previous work [1], we developed such a classification for the A_{N-1} series of 6D (2,0) theories. In the present paper, we extend this to the D_N series. We outline the procedure for general D_N, and construct, in detail, the classification through D_4. We discuss the implications for S-duality in Spin(8) and Spin(7) gauge theory, and recover many of the dualities conjectured by Argyres and Wittig [2].

Uncertainties in Successive Measurements

When you measure an observable, A, in Quantum Mechanics, the state of the system changes. This, in turn, affects the quantum-mechanical uncertainty in some non-commuting observable, B. The standard Uncertainty Relation puts a lower bound on the uncertainty of B in the initial state. What is relevant for a subsequent measurement of B, however, is the uncertainty of B in the post-measurement state. We re-examine this problem, both in the case where A has a pure point spectrum and in the case where A has a continuous spectrum. In the latter case, the need to include a finite detector resolution, as part of what it means to measure such an observable, has dramatic implications for the result of successive measurements. Ozawa proposed an inequality satisfied in the case of successive measurements. Among our results, we show that his inequality is ineffective (can never come close to being saturated). For the cases of interest, we compute a sharper lower bound.

Gaiotto Duality for the Twisted A_{2N-1} Series

We study 4D N=2 superconformal theories that arise from the compactification of 6D N=(2,0) theories of type A_{2N-1} on a Riemann surface C, in the presence of punctures twisted by a Z_2 outer automorphism. We describe how to do a complete classification of these SCFTs in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, which we do explicitly for A_3, and provide tables of properties of twisted defects up through A_9. We find atypical degenerations of Riemann surfaces that do not lead to weakly-coupled gauge groups, but to a gauge coupling pinned at a point in the interior of moduli space. As applications, we study: i) 6D representations of 4D superconformal quivers in the shape of an affine/non-affine D_n Dynkin diagram, ii) S-duality of SU(4) and Sp(2) gauge theories with various combinations of fundamental and antisymmetric matter, and iii) realizations of all rank-one SCFTs predicted by Argyres and Wittig.

Nilpotent orbits and codimension-two defects of 6d N=(2,0) theories

We study the local properties of a class of codimension-2 defects of the 6d N=(2,0) theories of type J=A,D,E labeled by nilpotent orbits of a Lie algebra \mathfrak{g}, where \mathfrak{g} is determined by J and the outer-automorphism twist around the defect. This class is a natural generalisation of the defects of the 6d theory of type SU(N) labeled by a Young diagram with N boxes. For any of these defects, we determine its contribution to the dimension of the Higgs branch, to the Coulomb branch operators and their scaling dimensions, to the 4d central charges a and c, and to the flavour central charge k.

Quantization of Fayet-Iliopoulos Parameters in Supergravity

In this short note we discuss quantization of the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter in supergravity theories. We argue that in supergravity, the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter determines a lift of the group action to a line bundle, and such lifts are quantized. Just as D-terms in rigid N=1 supersymmetry are interpreted in terms of moment maps and symplectic reductions, we argue that in supergravity the quantization of the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter has a natural understanding in terms of linearizations in geometric invariant theory (GIT) quotients, the algebro-geometric version of symplectic quotients.

Spin structures and superstrings

In superstring theory spin structures are present on both the 2-dimensional worldsheet and 10-dimensional spacetime. We present a new proposal for the B-field in superstring theory and demonstrate its interaction with worldsheet spin structures. Our formulation generalizes to orientifolds, where various twistings appear. A special case of the orientifold worldsheet B-field amplitude is a KO-theoretic construction of the Z/8Z-valued Kervaire invariant on pin-minus surfaces.

Tinkertoys for Gaiotto Duality

We describe a procedure for classifying N=2 superconformal theories of the type introduced by Davide Gaiotto. Any curve, C, on which the 6D A_{N-1} SCFT is compactified, can be decomposed into 3-punctured spheres, connected by cylinders. We classify the spheres, and the cylinders that connect them. The classification is carried out explicitly, up through N=5, and for several families of SCFTs for arbitrary N. These lead to a wealth of new S-dualities between Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian N=2 SCFTs.

There is no "Theory of Everything" inside E8

We analyze certain subgroups of real and complex forms of the Lie group E8, and deduce that any "Theory of Everything" obtained by embedding the gauge groups of gravity and the Standard Model into a real or complex form of E8 lacks certain representation-theoretic properties required by physical reality. The arguments themselves amount to representation theory of Lie algebras in the spirit of Dynkin's classic papers and are written for mathematicians.

Torsion D-Branes in Nongeometrical Phases

In a geometrical background, D-brane charge is classified by topological K-theory. The corresponding classification of D-brane charge in an arbitrary, nongeometrical, compactification is still a mystery. We study D-branes on non-simply-connected Calabi-Yau 3-folds, with particular interest in the D-branes whose charges are torsion elements of the K-theory. We argue that we can follow the D-brane charge through the nongeometrical regions of the Kahler moduli space and, as evidence, explicitly construct torsion D-branes at the Gepner point in some examples. In one of our examples, the Gepner theory is a nonabelian orbifold of a tensor product of minimal models, and this somewhat exotic situation seems to be essential to the physics.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking in the AdS/CFT Correspondence

We study the SU(3)-invariant relevant deformation of D=4 N=4 SU(N) gauge theory at large N using the AdS/CFT correspondence. At low energies, we obtain a nonsupersymmetric gauge theory with three left-handed quarks in the adjoint of SU(N). In terms of the five dimensional gauged supergravity, there is an unstable critical point in the scalar potential for fluctuations of some fields in a nontrivial representation of the symmetry group SU(3). On the field theory side, this corresponds to dynamical breaking of the SU(3) chiral symmetry down to SO(3). We compute the condensate of the quark bilinear and the two-point correlation function of the spontaneously broken currents from supergravity and find a nonzero `pion' decay constant, f_pi.

Aspects of ALE Matrix Models and Twisted Matrix Strings

We examine several aspects of the formulation of M(atrix)-Theory on ALE spaces. We argue for the existence of massless vector multiplets in the resolved $A_{n-1}$ spaces, as required by enhanced gauge symmetry in M-Theory, and that these states might have the correct gravitational interactions. We propose a matrix model which describes M-Theory on an ALE space in the presence of wrapped membranes. We also consider orbifold descriptions of matrix string theories, as well as more exotic orbifolds of these models, and present a classification of twisted matrix string theories according to Reid's exact sequences of surface quotient singularities.

On the Moduli Spaces of M(atrix)-Theory Compactifications

By identifying the moduli space of coupling constants in the SYM description of toroidal compactifications of M(atrix)-Theory, we construct the M(atrix) description of the moduli spaces of Type IIA string theory compactified on T^n. Addition of theta terms to the M(atrix) SYM produces the shift symmetries necessary to recover the correct global structure of the moduli spaces. Up to n=3, the corresponding BPS charges transform under the proper representations of the U-duality groups. For n=4,5, if we make the ansatz of including the BPS charges corresponding to the wrapped M-theory 5-brane, the correspondence with Type IIA continues to hold. However, for n=6, we find additional charges for which there are no obvious candidates in M(atrix)-Theory.

(0,2) Noncritical Strings in Six Dimensions

Type IIB strings compactified on K3 have a rich structure of solitonic strings, transforming under SO(21,5,Z). We derive the BPS tension formula for these strings, and discuss their properties, in particular, the points in the moduli space where certain strings become tensionless. By examining these tensionless string limits, we shed some further light on the conjectured dual M-Theory description of this compactification.

N=1 Dualities for Exceptional Gauge Groups and Quantum Global Symmetries

We discuss our attempts to generalize the known examples of dualities in N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories to exceptional gauge groups. We derive some dual pairs from known examples connected to exceptional groups and find an interesting phenomenon: sometimes the full global symmetry is ``hidden'' on the magnetic side. It is not realized as a symmetry on the fundamental fields in the Lagrangian. Rather, it emerges as a symmetry of the quantum theory. We then focus on an approach based on self-dual models. We construct duals for some very special matter content of $E_ 7$, $E_6$ and $F_4$. Again we find that the full global symmetry is not realized on the fundamental fields.

Duality of (0,2) String Vacua

We discuss a duality of (0,2) heterotic string vacua which implies that certain pairs of (0,2) Calabi-Yau compactifications on topologically distinct target manifolds yield identical string theories. Some complex structure moduli in one model are interpreted in the dual model as deforming the holomorphic structure of the vacuum gauge bundle (and vice versa). A better understanding of singularity resolution for (0,2) models may reveal that this duality of compactifications on singular spaces is part of a larger story, involving smooth topology-changing processes which interpolate between the (0,2) models on the resolved spaces.

3 Into 2 Doesn't Go: (almost) chiral gauge theory on the lattice

Kaplan recently proposed a novel lattice chiral gauge theory in which the bare theory is defined on $(2n+1)$-dimensions, but the continuum theory emerges in $2n$-dimensions. We explore whether the resulting theory reproduces all the features of continuum chiral gauge theory in the case of two-dimensional axial Schwinger model. We find that one can arrange for the two-dimensional perturbation expansion to be reproduced successfully. However, the theory fails to reproduce the 2-dimensional fermion nonconservation.
