Wet Hair: Global Symmetries in Entanglement Islands

A central conjecture in quantum gravity is the non-existence of global symmetries. As a fully unitary theory, there is no information loss in a UV complete quantum gravity theory. We see both these concepts reflected in the AdS/CFT correspondence, which tells us that dynamical processes in AdS are fully captured by a manifestly unitary CFT with no information loss. Furthermore, global symmetries of the CFT are dual to gauge symmetries in the AdS, which implies no global symmetry in the AdS. In this work, we provide concrete evidence for the connection between the non-existence of global symmetries and the absence of information loss in quantum gravity. We study the $\textit{island setups}$ in which a gravitational AdS is coupled with a nongravitational bath on its boundary. In such theories, the information in the AdS can be lost to the bath. We provide concrete examples with global symmetries in the island setup, from both the bottom-up and the top-down perspectives. We argue that these global symmetries are consistent due to $\textit{entanglement islands}$, in which holography is realized in a novel fashion. The global symmetries we construct are all mixed with spontaneously broken gauge symmetries. We will show that this fact has two implications: $\textbf{1)}$ The black hole hair is detectable in the bath (``wet hair"); $\textbf{2)}$ a resolution of a puzzle proposed by Harlow and Shaghoulian.

Spontaneously Broken Subsystem Symmetries

We investigate the spontaneous breaking of subsystem symmetries directly in the context of continuum field theories by calculating the correlation function of charged operators. Our methods confirm the lack of spontaneous symmetry breaking in some of the existing continuum field theories with subsystem symmetries, as had previously been established based on a careful analysis of the spectrum. We present some novel continuum field theory constructions that do exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking whenever allowed by general principles. These interesting patterns of symmetry breaking occur despite the fact that all the theories we study are non-interacting.

Warped Compactifications in Particle Physics, Cosmology and Quantum Gravity

Particle physics has evolved in the past decade through evaluating the consequences of experimental measurements as well as exploiting theoretical tools that permit exploration of new model building and cosmological possibilities. Particularly due to insights from the AdS/CFT correspondence, higher-dimensional warped compactifications, in particular, have played a big role in recent developments by allowing a study of regimes of parameters that would otherwise be intractable. Similarly, theoretical developments in quantum gravity benefit from the bigger range of possibilities that can be explored using warped geometry, allowing for constructions of string vacua with positive cosmological constant and for the exploration of entanglement and information transfer in arbitrary dimensions. Puzzles remain in both more phenomenologically oriented and more theoretically oriented contexts which form the basis for a rich research program in the future as well.

Entanglement Phase Structure of a Holographic BCFT in a Black Hole Background

We compute holographic entanglement entropy for subregions of a BCFT thermal state living on a nongravitating black hole background. The system we consider is doubly holographic and dual to an eternal black string with an embedded Karch-Randall brane that is parameterized by its angle. Entanglement islands are conventionally expected to emerge at late times to preserve unitarity at finite temperature, but recent calculations at zero temperature have shown such islands do not exist when the brane lies below a critical angle. When working at finite temperature in the context of a black string, we find that islands exist even when the brane lies below the critical angle. We note that although these islands exist when they are needed to preserve unitarity, they are restricted to a finite connected region on the brane which we call the atoll. Depending on two parameters -- the size of the subregion and the brane angle -- the entanglement entropy either remains constant in time or follows a Page curve. We discuss this rich phase structure in the context of bulk reconstruction.

Inconsistency of Islands in Theories with Long-Range Gravity

In ordinary gravitational theories, any local bulk operator in an entanglement wedge is accompanied by a long-range gravitational dressing that extends to the asymptotic part of the wedge. Islands are the only known examples of entanglement wedges that are disconnected from the asymptotic region of spacetime. In this paper, we show that the lack of an asymptotic region in islands creates a potential puzzle that involves the gravitational Gauss law, independently of whether or not there is a non-gravitational bath. In a theory with long-range gravity, the energy of an excitation localized to the island can be detected from outside the island, in contradiction with the principle that operators in an entanglement wedge should commute with operators from its complement. In several known examples, we show that this tension is resolved because islands appear in conjunction with a massive graviton. We also derive some additional consistency conditions that must be obeyed by islands in decoupled systems. Our arguments suggest that islands might not constitute consistent entanglement wedges in standard theories of massless gravity where the Gauss law applies.

Information Transfer with a Gravitating Bath

Late-time dominance of entanglement islands plays a critical role in addressing the information paradox for black holes in AdS coupled to an asymptotic non-gravitational bath. A natural question is how this observation can be extended to gravitational systems. To gain insight into this question, we explore how this story is modified within the context of Karch-Randall braneworlds when we allow the asymptotic bath to couple to dynamical gravity. We find that because of the inability to separate degrees of freedom by spatial location when defining the radiation region, the entanglement entropy of radiation emitted into the bath is a time-independent constant, consistent with recent work on black hole information in asymptotically flat space. If we instead consider an entanglement entropy between two sectors of a specific division of the Hilbert space, we then find non-trivial time-dependence, with the Page time a monotonically decreasing function of the brane angle -- provided both branes are below a particular angle. However, the properties of the entropy depend discontinuously on this angle, which is the first example of such discontinuous behavior for an AdS brane in AdS space.

Generalization of QCD$_3$ Symmetry-Breaking and Flavored Quiver Dualities

We extend the recently proposed symmetry breaking scenario of QCD$_3$ to the so-called "master" $(2+1)$d bosonization duality, which has bosonic and fermionic matter on both ends. Using anomaly arguments, a phase diagram emerges with several novel regions. We then construct $2+1$ dimensional dualities for flavored quivers using node-by-node dualization. Such dualities are applicable to theories which live on domain walls in QCD$_4$-like theories with dynamical quarks. We also derive dualities for quivers based on orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. Lastly, we support the conjectured dualities using holographic constructions, even though several aspects of this holographic construction remain mostly qualitative.

New and Old Fermionic Dualities from 3d Bosonization

We construct novel fermion-fermion dualities in $2+1$-dimensions using 3d bosonization dualities. This is achieved by relating two-node quiver theories using both the flavor-bounded and flavor-violated 3d bosonization dualities. Such quivers can be viewed as a generalization of the fermionic particle-vortex duality. A special case of these quivers exhibits a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry under interchange of the two nodes. Using orbifold techniques, we show that such dualities provide a novel way of deriving known 3d bosonization dualities with adjoint matter, thus unifying the non-Abelian bosonization dualities in an even larger duality web. We then use this construction to derive new dualities involving adjoint matter.

Supersymmetric Adler Functions and Holography

We perform several tests on a recent proposal by Shifman and Stepanyantz for an exact expression for the current correlation functions in supersymmetric gauge theories. We clarify the meaning of the relation in superconformal theories. In particular we show that it automatically follows from known relations between the current correlation functions and anomalies. It therefore also automatically matches between different dual realizations of the same superconformal theory. We use holographic examples as well as calculations in free theories to show that the proposed relation fails in theories with mass terms.

A Precision Test of AdS/CFT with Flavor

In this letter we put AdS/CFT dualities involving probe branes to a precision test. On the holographic side we use a new class of supersymmetric D7-brane embeddings into AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, which allow to describe N=4 SYM coupled to massive N=2 supersymmetric flavors on S$^4$. With these embeddings we can compare holographic results to a field theory analysis of the free energy using supersymmetric localization. Localization allows us to get results at strong coupling, and hence to compare in detail to AdS/CFT. We find analytically matching results: a phase transition at the same critical mass in both calculations and matching free energies up to a scheme-dependent constant in both phases.

Holographic Black Hole Chemistry

Thermodynamic quantities associated with black holes in Anti-de Sitter space obey an interesting identity when the cosmological constant is included as one of the dynamical variables, the generalized Smarr relation. We show that this relation can easily be understood from the point of view of the dual holographic field theory. It amounts to the simple statement that the extensive thermodynamic quantities of a large $N$ gauge theory only depend on the number of colors, $N$, via an overall factor of $N^2$.

Holographic entanglement entropy and the internal space

We elaborate on the role of extremal surfaces probing the internal space in AdS/CFT. Extremal surfaces in AdS quantify the "geometric" entanglement between different regions in physical space for the dual CFT. This, however, is just one of many ways to split a given system into subsectors, and extremal surfaces in the internal space should similarly quantify entanglement between subsectors of the theory. For the case of AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, their area was interpreted as entanglement entropy between U(n) and U(m) subsectors of U(n+m) N=4 SYM. Making this proposal precise is subtle for a number of reasons, the most obvious being that from the bulk one usually has access to gauge-invariant quantities only, while a split into subgroups is inherently gauge variant. We study N=4 SYM on the Coulomb branch, where some of the issues can be mitigated and the proposal can be sharpened. Continuing back to the original AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ geometry, we obtain a modified proposal, based on the relation of the internal space to the R-symmetry group.

Scaling theory of the cuprate strange metals

We show that the anomalous temperature scaling of five distinct transport quantities in the strange metal regime of the cuprate superconductors can be reproduced with only two nontrivial critical exponents. The quantities are: (i) the electrical resistivity, (ii) the Hall angle, (iii) the Hall Lorenz ratio, (iv) the magnetoresistance and (v) the thermopower. The exponents are the dynamical critical exponent z = 4/3 and an anomalous scaling dimension Phi = -2/3 for the charge density operator.

Spinor fields in general Newton-Cartan backgrounds

We give a covariant construction of Lagrangians for spinor fields in generic Newton-Cartan backgrounds. A non-relativistic Dirac/Levy-Leblond operator and the associated fields are obtained from relativistic analogues by a limiting procedure. The relativistic symmetries induce the complete set of non-relativistic symmetries, including Milne boosts and local Galilean transformations. The resulting Levy-Leblond operator includes non-minimal couplings to the Newton-Cartan structure as well as to the gauge field, and with these couplings it transforms covariantly. Phenomenologically, this fixes the gyromagnetic ratio to g=1. Three-dimensional spacetimes are an exception: generic g is possible but results in modified Milne transformations, which - upon gauge fixing - reproduces the anomalous diffeomorphisms found in earlier approaches.

Supersymmetric D3/D7 for holographic flavors on curved space

We derive a new class of supersymmetric D3/D7 brane configurations, which allow to holographically describe N=4 SYM coupled to massive N=2 flavor degrees of freedom on spaces of constant curvature. We systematically solve the $κ$-symmetry condition for D7-brane embeddings into AdS$_4$-sliced AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, and find supersymmetric embeddings in a simple closed form. Up to a critical mass, these embeddings come in surprisingly diverse families, and we present a first study of their (holographic) phenomenology. We carry out the holographic renormalization, compute the one-point functions and attempt a field-theoretic interpretation of the different families. To complete the catalog of supersymmetric D3/D7 configurations, we construct analogous embeddings for flavored N=4 SYM on S$^4$ and dS$_4$.

Towards a Holographic Bose-Hubbard Model

We present a holographic construction of the large-N Bose-Hubbard model. The model is based on Maxwell fields coupled to charged scalar fields on the AdS2 hard wall. We realize the lobe-shaped phase structure of the Bose-Hubbard model and find that the model admits Mott insulator ground states in the limit of large Coulomb repulsion. In the Mott insulator phases, the bosons are localized on each site. At zero hopping we find that the transitions between Mott insulating phases with different fillings correspond to first order level-crossing phase transitions. At finite hopping we find a holographic phase transition between the Mott phase and a non-homogeneous phase. We then analyze the perturbations of fields around both the Mott insulator phase and inhomogeneous phase. We find almost zero modes in the non-homogeneous phase.

Unparticles and Anomalous Dimensions in the Cuprates

Motivated by the overwhelming evidence some type of quantum criticality underlies the power-law for the optical conductivity and $T-$linear resistivity in the cuprates, we demonstrate here how a scale-invariant or unparticle sector can lead to a unifying description of the observed scaling forms. We adopt the continuous mass formalism or multi band (flavor) formalism of the unparticle sector by letting various microscopic parameters be mass-dependent. In particular, we show that an effective mass that varies with the flavor index as well as a running band edge and lifetime capture the AC and DC transport phenomenology of the cuprates. A key consequence of the running mass is that the effective dynamical exponent can differ from the underlying bare critical exponent, thereby providing a mechanism for realizing the fractional values of the dynamical exponent required in a previous analysis\cite{ Hartnoll:2015sea}. We also predict that regardless of the bare dynamical exponent, $z$, a non-zero anomalous dimension for the current is required. Physically, the anomalous dimension arises because the charge depends on the flavor, mass or energy. The equivalent phenomenon in a $d+1$ gravitational construction is the running of the charge along the radial direction. The nature of the superconducting instability in the presence of scale invariant stuff shows that the transition temperature is not necessarily a monotonic function of the pairing interaction.

Conductivities for Hyperscaling Violating Geometries

We show that many results about holographic conductivities in geometries with hyperscaling violating scaling can be reproduced from simple scaling laws in the dual field theory. We show that the electro-magnetic response of probe branes in these systems require at least one additional scaling parameter Phi beyond the usual dynamical exponent z and hyperscaling violating exponent theta, as also pointed out in earlier work. We show that the scaling exponents can be chosen in such a way that the temperature dependence of DC conductivity and Hall angle in strange metals can be reproduced.

Flavored N=4 SYM -- a highly entangled quantum liquid

We study N=4 SYM theory coupled to fundamental N=2 hypermultiplets in a state of finite charge density. The setup can be described holographically as a configuration of D3 and D7 branes with a non-trivial worldvolume gauge field on the D7. The phase has been identified as a new form of quantum liquid, where certain properties are those of a Fermi liquid while others are clearly distinct. We focus on the entanglement among the flavors, as quantified by the entanglement entropy. The expectation for a Fermi liquid would be a logarithmic enhancement of the area law, but we find a more drastic enhancement instead. The leading contributions are volume terms with a non-trivial shape dependence, signaling extensive entanglement among the flavors. At finite temperature these correlations are confined to a region of size given by the inverse temperature.

Generalized gravitational entropy of probe branes: flavor entanglement holographically

The notion of generalized gravitational entropy introduced by Lewkowycz and Maldacena allows, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, to calculate CFT entanglement entropies. We adapt the method to the case where flavor branes are present and treated in the probe approximation. This allows to calculate the leading flavor correction to the CFT entanglement entropy from the on-shell action of the probe, while dealing with the backreaction is avoided entirely and from the outset. As an application we give concise derivations for the contribution of massless and massive flavor degrees of freedom to the entanglement entropy in N=4 SYM theory.

Minimal area submanifolds in AdS x compact

We describe the asymptotic behavior of minimal area submanifolds in product spacetimes of an asymptotically hyperbolic space times a compact internal manifold. In particular, we find that unlike the case of a minimal area submanifold just in an asymptotically hyperbolic space, the internal part of the boundary submanifold is constrained to be itself a minimal area submanifold. For applications to holography, this tells us what are the allowed "flavor branes" that can be added to a holographic field theory. We also give a compact geometric expression for the spectrum of operator dimensions associated with the slipping modes of the submanifold in the internal space. We illustrate our results with several examples, including some that haven't appeared in the literature before.

Revisiting non-relativistic limits

We show that the full spurionic symmetry of Galilean-invariant field theories can be deduced when those theories are the limits of relativistic parents. Under the limit, the non-relativistic daughter couples to Newton-Cartan geometry together with all of the symmetries advocated in previous work, including the recently revived Milne boosts. Our limit is a covariant version of the usual one, where we start with a gapped relativistic theory with a conserved charge, turn on a chemical potential equal to the rest mass of the lightest charged state, and then zoom in to the low energy sector. This procedure gives a simple physical interpretation for the Milne boosts. Our methods even apply when there is a magnetic moment, which is known to modify the non-relativistic symmetry transformations. We focus on two examples, taking the non-relativistic limits of scalar field theory and hydrodynamics.

The holographic dual of a Hawking pair has a wormhole

In previous work, two of us constructed the holographic dual of a single Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pair in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Here we extend that work in two directions. First, we use a Randall-Sundrum brane to couple the entangled pair to dynamical gravity. Second, we consider the entangled pair in the background of a black hole with the particles on opposite sides of the horizon, turning the EPR pair into a Hawking pair. We give general arguments that ER=EPR should be understood as a duality between two equivalent descriptions of the same physical reality.

Entanglement Entropy for Probe Branes

We give a prescription for calculating the entanglement entropy in holographic probe brane systems by systematically taking the leading order backreaction of the probe brane into account. We find a simple compact double integral formula, which is insensitive to many details of the backreaction, most notably the internal space or the non-metric fields sourced by the probe. We validate our method by comparing to exact results in solvable toy models. We also determine the entanglement entropies for a sphere and a strip in the top-down D3/D7 and D3/D5 system. For the sphere the entanglement entropy has also been obtained by other methods and we find perfect agreement.

Higher-spin realization of a dS static patch/cut-off CFT correspondence

We derive a holographic relation for the dS static patch with the dual field theory defined on the observer horizon. The starting point is the duality of higher-spin theory on AdS_4 and the O(N) vector model. We build on a similar analytic continuation as used recently to obtain a realization of dS/CFT, and adapt it to the static patch. The resulting duality relates higher-spin theory on the dS_4 static patch to a cut-off CFT on the cylinder RxS^2. The construction permits a derivation of the finite thermodynamic entropy associated to the horizon of the static patch from the dual field theory. As a further brick we recover the spectrum of quasinormal frequencies from the correlation functions of the boundary theory. In the last part we incorporate the dS/dS correspondence as an independent proposal for holography on dS and show that a concrete realization can be obtained by similar reasoning.

Matrix Flavor Brane and Dual Wilson Line

We study a novel non-Abelian matrix configuration of probe D-branes in AdS5. This configuration gives rise to a new D-brane phenomenon related to the known "Myers effect" in the context of holography. It is dual to a deformation of the field theory by a Wilson line threaded fermion bilinear. We study the two point function of these short Wilson lines from both the non-Abelian DBI action and a classical string world sheet calculation and identify the region where they agree. We also study a related configuration where the non-Abelian nature of the embedding functions is enhanced by a background flux as in the Myers effect.

The holographic dual of an EPR pair has a wormhole

We construct the holographic dual of two colored quasiparticles in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory entangled in a color singlet EPR pair. In the holographic dual the entanglement is encoded in a geometry of a non-traversable wormhole on the worldsheet of the flux tube connecting the pair. This gives a simple example supporting the recent claim by Maldacena and Susskind that EPR pairs and non-traversable wormholes are equivalent descriptions of the same physics.

Holographic realization of large-Nc orbifold equivalence with non-zero chemical potential

Recently, it has been suggested that large-Nc orbifold equivalences may be applicable to certain theories with chemical potentials, including QCD, in certain portions of their phase diagram. When valid, such an equivalence offers the possibility of relating large-Nc QCD at non-zero baryon chemical potential, a theory with a complex fermion determinant, to a related theory whose fermion determinant is real and positive. In this paper, we provide a test of this large Nc equivalence using a holographic realization of a supersymmetric theory with baryon chemical potential and a related theory with isospin chemical potential. We show that the two strongly-coupled, large-Nc theories are equivalent in a large region of the phase diagram.

Hyperscaling-Violation on Probe D-Branes

For the field theories dual to D3/D7- and D3/D5-brane systems we find non-relativistic finite density fixed points exhibiting a violation of hyperscaling. This violation is measured by the critical exponent $θ=1$ while the dynamical critical exponent is $z=2$. At zero temperature we compute the thermodynamic potentials, the speed of normal sound, and the speed of zero sound for both these massive D3/D(2n+1)-brane systems near their non-relativistic fixed points. Moreover, we determine the first correction to the free energy for small temperatures yielding the critical exponents $α$ and $ν$.

Models of three-dimensional fractional topological insulators

Time-reversal invariant three-dimensional topological insulators can be defined fundamentally by a topological field theory with a quantized axion angle theta of zero or pi. It was recently shown that fractional quantized values of theta are consistent with time-reversal invariance if deconfined, gapped, fractionally charged bulk excitations appear in the low-energy spectrum due to strong correlation effects, leading to the concept of a fractional topological insulator. These fractionally charged excitations are coupled to emergent gauge fields which ensure that the microscopic degrees of freedom, the original electrons, are gauge-invariant objects. A first step towards the construction of microscopic models of fractional topological insulators is to understand the nature of these emergent gauge theories and their corresponding phases. In this work, we show that low-energy effective gauge theories of both Abelian or non-Abelian type are consistent with a fractional quantized axion angle if they admit a Coulomb phase or a Higgs phase with gauge group broken down to a discrete subgroup. The Coulomb phases support gapless but electrically neutral bulk excitations while the Higgs phases are fully gapped. The Higgs and non-Abelian Coulomb phases exhibit multiple ground states on boundaryless spatial 3-manifolds with nontrivial first homology, while the Abelian Coulomb phase has a unique ground state. The ground state degeneracy receives an additional contribution on manifolds with boundary due to the induced boundary Chern-Simons term.

Non-relativistic holography from Horava gravity

Many non-relativistic Quantum Field Theories with conserved particle number share a common set of symmetries: time dependent spatial diffeomorphisms acting on the background metric and U(1) invariance acting on the background fields which couple to particle number. Here we use these symmetries to deduce a gravity dual for any such theory in terms of a non-relativistic theory of gravity, a variant of Horava gravity. This duality allows the extension of holography to generic non-relativistic field theories. As Horava gravity is presumed to be a consistent quantum theory, this duality also allows holography to move beyond the limit of a large number of colors, in principle. In the case when the field theory is conformally invariant, we prove that our proposal reproduces the form of the two point function demanded by this symmetry.

Novel Solutions of Finite-Density D3/D5 Probe Brane System and Their Implications for Stability

In this article we present a novel set of solutions of the probe brane system consisting of Nf-D5 probe branes embedded in the near-horizon geometry generated by Nc-D3 branes, with the D5 worldvolume U(1) gauge fields turned on. Our system is holographically dual to a supersymmetric defect field theory at finite density in non-trivial vacua. We find that a large class of vacua turns out to satisfy a no-force condition, even with supersymmetry explicitly broken by the finite density; our solutions include configuration in which charge separates from the horizon and is instead carried by probe branes outside the horizon. The free energy is lowered in this process. Whether this corresponds to a genuine instability of the finite-density probe brane system remains to be seen.

Adventures in Holographic Dimer Models

We abstract the essential features of holographic dimer models, and develop several new applications of these models. First, semi-holographically coupling free band fermions to holographic dimers, we uncover novel phase transitions between conventional Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, accompanied by a change in the structure of the Fermi surface. Second, we make dimer vibrations propagate through the whole crystal by way of double trace deformations, obtaining nontrivial band structure. In a simple toy model, the topology of the band structure experiences an interesting reorganization as we vary the strength of the double trace deformations. Finally, we develop tools that would allow one to build, in a bottom-up fashion, a holographic avatar of the Hubbard model.

An improved model of vector mesons in holographic QCD

We analyze the sector of dimension-three vector meson operators in the "hard wall" model of holographic QCD, including the vector and axial currents, dual to gauge fields in the bulk, and the tensor operator $\barψσ^{μν}ψ$, dual to a two-form field satisfying a complex self-duality condition. The model includes the effect of chiral symmetry breaking on vector mesons, that involves a coupling between the dual gauge field and the two-form field. We compute the leading logarithmic terms in the operator product expansion of two-point functions and the leading non-perturbative contribution to the tensor-vector correlator. The result is consistent with the operator product expansion of QCD. We also study the spectrum of vector mesons numerically.

Energy Loss Calculations of Moving Defects for General Holographic Metrics

We extend the ideas of using AdS/CFT to calculate energy loss of extended defects in strongly coupled systems to general holographic metrics. We find the equations of motion governing uniformly moving defects of various dimension and determine the corresponding energy loss rates in terms of the metric coefficients. We apply our formulae to the specific examples of both bulk geometries created by general Dp-branes, as well as to holographic superfluids. For the Dp-branes, we find that the energy loss of our defect, in addition to the expected quadratic dependence on velocity, depends on velocity only via an effective blueshifted temperature - despite the existence of a microscopic length scale in the theory. We also find, for a certain value of p and dimension of the defect, that the energy loss has no dependence on temperature or velocity other than the aforementioned quadratic dependence on velocity. For the superfluid example, we find agreement with previous results on the existence of a cutoff velocity, below which the probe experiences no drag force. For both examples we can easily extend the equations of motion and energy loss to defects of larger dimension.

Finite size effects on the statistical angle of an electron induced dyon in proximity to a topological insulator

A pointlike electric charge close to the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator induces a magnetic monopole mirror charge. We study the distance dependence of the statistical angle describing this induced dyon system. We find that the total angular momentum, which sometimes is used as signature of the statistical angle, for an electron outside a finite size spherical or tube shaped topological insulator is zero for any finite distance between the electron and the surface. However, we show that in the 2-electron system one can indeed isolate a non-trivial statistical angle for intermediate size loops, that is loops much larger than the distance of the charge to the sample but much smaller than the size of the sample. The necessity for this limit confirms the 2+1 dimensional nature of the non-trivial statistical angle found in previous work. Our results clarify the conditions under which the statistical angle of this system could be measured in real experiments.

Generating new dualities through the orbifold equivalence: a demonstration in ABJM and four-dimensional quivers

We show that the recently proposed large $N$ equivalence between ABJM theories with Chern-Simons terms of different rank and level, U(N_1)_{k_1}\times U(N_1)_{-k_1} and U(N_2)_{k_2}\times U(N_2)_{-k_2}, but the same value of N' =N_1 k_1=N_2 k_2, can be explained using planar equivalence in the mirror duals. The combination of S-dualities and orbifold equivalence can be applied to other cases as well, with very appealing results. As an example we show that two different quiver theories with k nodes can be easily shown to be Seiberg dual through the orbifold equivalence, but it requires order k^2 steps to give a proof when Seiberg duality is performed node by node.

Moving Defects in AdS/CFT

We study defects of various dimensions moving through Anti-de Sitter space. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence this allows us to probe aspects of the dual quantum field theory. We focus on the energy loss experienced by these defects as they move through the CFT plasma. We find that the behavior of these physical quantities is governed by induced world-volume horizons. We identify world-volume analogs for several gravitational phenomena including black holes, the Hawking-Page phase transition and expanding cosmological horizons.

Non-linear, Finite Frequency Quantum Critical Transport from AdS/CFT

Transport at a quantum critical point depends sensitively on the relative magnitudes of temperature, frequency and electric field. Here we used the gauge/gravity correspondence to compute the full temperature and, generally nonlinear, electric field dependence of the electrical conductivity for some model critical theories. In the special case of 2+1 dimensions we are also able to find the full time-dependent response of the system to an arbitrary time dependent external electric field. The response of the system is instantaneous, implying a frequency independent conductivity. We describe a mechanism that rationalizes the instantaneous response.

Surface Plasmons and Topological Insulators

We study surface plasmons localized on interfaces between topologically trivial and topologically non-trivial time reversal invariant materials in three dimensions. For the interface between a metal and a topological insulator the magnetic polarization of the surface plasmon is rotated out of the plane of the interface; this effect should be experimentally observable by exciting the surface plasmon with polarized light. More interestingly, we argue that the same effect also is realized on the interface between vacuum and a doped topological insulator with non-vanishing bulk carrier density.

Surface plasmons on a thin film topological insulator

Recently it has been shown that surface plasmons supported by an interface between a 3+1 dimensional topological insulator and a metal or between a 3+1 dimensional topological insulator with residual bulk charge carriers and vacuum have a polarization that is rotated by an angle of order of the fine structure constant alpha compared to their topological trivial counterparts. In this work we generalize this analysis to the more realistic case of thin films, taking into account the effect of multiple reflections. In the symmetric case of a thin film surrounded by the same material on both sides the polarization of both allowed surface plasmon modes is unchanged from the single interface case, even though their dispersion relation is altered by the interactions between the two surface layers. In the general asymmetric case the angle is affected as well. We give a simple analytic expression for the resonance condition that determines the angle and solve it perturbatively for the case of a thin film between two media with almost identical permittivity.

Towards a holographic marginal Fermi liquid

We present an infinite class of 2+1 dimensional field theories which, after coupling to semi-holographic fermions, exhibit strange metallic behavior in a suitable large $N$ limit. These theories describe lattices of hypermultiplet defects interacting with parity-preserving supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories with $U(N) \times U(N)$ gauge groups at levels $\pm k$. They have dual gravitational descriptions in terms of lattices of probe M2 branes in $AdS_4 \times S^7/Z_k$ (for $N \gg 1, N \gg k^5$) or probe D2 branes in $AdS_4 \times CP^3$ (for $N \gg k \gg 1, N \ll k^5$). We discuss several challenges one faces in maintaining the success of these models at finite $N$, including backreaction of the probes in the gravity solutions and radiative corrections in the weakly coupled field theory limit.

A Holographic Quantum Critical Point at Finite Magnetic Field and Finite Density

We analyze the phase diagram of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with fundamental matter in the presence of a background magnetic field and nonzero baryon number. We identify an isolated quantum critical point separating two differently ordered finite density phases. The ingredients that give rise to this transition are generic in a holographic setup, leading us to conjecture that such critical points should be rather common. In this case, the quantum phase transition is second order with mean-field exponents. We characterize the neighborhood of the critical point at small temperatures and identify some signatures of a new phase dominated by the critical point. We also identify the line of transitions between the finite density and zero density phases. The line is completely determined by the mass of the lightest charged quasiparticle at zero density. Finally, we measure the magnetic susceptibility and find hints of fermion condensation at large magnetic field.

Fractional topological insulators in three dimensions

Topological insulators can be generally defined by a topological field theory with an axion angle theta of 0 or pi. In this work, we introduce the concept of fractional topological insulator defined by a fractional axion angle and show that it can be consistent with time reversal (T) invariance if ground state degeneracies are present. The fractional axion angle can be measured experimentally by the quantized fractional bulk magnetoelectric polarization P_3, and a `halved' fractional quantum Hall effect on the surface with Hall conductance of the form (p/q)(e^2/2h) with p,q odd. In the simplest of these states the electron behaves as a bound state of three fractionally charged `quarks' coupled to a deconfined non-Abelian SU(3) `color' gauge field, where the fractional charge of the quarks changes the quantization condition of P_3 and allows fractional values consistent with T-invariance.

Holographic Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transitions

We find the first example of a quantum Berenzinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in two spatial dimensions via holography. This transition occurs in the D3/D5 system at nonzero density and magnetic field. At any nonzero temperature, the BKT scaling is destroyed and the transition becomes second order with mean-field exponents. We go on to conjecture about the generality of quantum BKT transitions in two spatial dimensions.

Holographic Lattices, Dimers, and Glasses

We holographically engineer a periodic lattice of localized fermionic impurities within a plasma medium by putting an array of probe D5-branes in the background produced by N D3-branes. Thermodynamic quantities are computed in the large N limit via the holographic dictionary. We then dope the lattice by replacing some of the D5-branes by anti-D5-branes. In the large N limit, we determine the critical temperature below which the system dimerizes with bond ordering. Finally, we argue that for the special case of a square lattice our system is glassy at large but finite N, with the low temperature physics dominated by a huge collection of metastable dimerized configurations without long-range order, connected only through tunneling events.

On the sign of the dilaton in the soft wall models

We elaborate on the existence of a spurious massless scalar mode in the vector channel of soft-wall models with incorrectly chosen sign of the exponential profile defining the wall. We re-iterate the point made in our earlier paper and demonstrate that the presence of the mode is robust, depending only on the infra-red asymptotics of the wall. We also re-emphasize that desired confinement properties can be realized with the correct sign choice.

Notes on Properties of Holographic Matter

Probe branes with finite worldvolume electric flux in the background created by a stack of Dp branes describe holographically strongly interacting fundamental matter at finite density. We identify two quantities whose leading low temperature behavior is independent of the dimensionality of the probe branes: specific heat and DC conductivity. This behavior can be inferred from the dynamics of the fundamental strings which provide a good description of the probe branes in the regime of low temperatures and finite densities. We also comment on the speed of sound on the branes and the temperature dependence of DC conductivity at vanishing charge density.

Time dependent black holes and thermal equilibration

We study aspects of a recently proposed exact time dependent black hole solution of IIB string theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The dual field theory is a thermal system in which initially a vacuum density for a non-conserved operator is turned on. We can see that in agreement with general thermal field theory expectation the system equilibrates: the expectation value of the non-conserved operator goes to zero exponentially and the entropy increases. In the field theory the process can be described quantitatively in terms of a thermofield state and exact agreement with the gravity answers is found.

The dS/dS Correspondence

We present a holographic duality for the de Sitter static patch which consolidates basic features of its geometry and the behavior of gravity and brane probes, valid on timescales short compared to the decay or Poincare recurrence times. Namely de Sitter spacetime $dS_d(R)$ in $d$ dimensions with curvature radius $R$ is holographically dual to two conformal field theories on $dS_{d-1}(R)$, cut off at an energy scale 1/R where they couple to each other and to $d-1$ dimensional gravity. As part of our analysis, we study brane probes in de Sitter and thermal Anti de Sitter spaces, and interpret the terms in the corresponding DBI action via strongly coupled thermal field theory. This provides a dual field theoretic interpretation of the fact that probes take forever to reach a horizon in general relativity.

Adding flavor to AdS/CFT

Coupling fundamental quarks to QCD in the dual string representation corresponds to adding the open string sector. Flavors therefore should be represented by space-time filling D-branes in the dual 5d closed string background. This requires several interesting properties of D-branes in AdS. D-branes have to be able to end in thin air in order to account for massive quarks, which only live in the UV region. They must come in distinct sets, representing the chiral global symmetry, with a bifundamental field playing the role of the chiral condensate. We show that these expectations are born out in several supersymmetric examples. To analyze most of these properties it is not necessary to go beyond the probe limit in which one neglects the backreaction of the flavor D-branes.

Mirror Symmetry in 2+1 and 1+1 Dimensions

We study the Coulomb-Higgs duality of N=2 supersymmetric Abelian Chern-Simons theories in 2+1 dimensions, by compactifying dual pairs on a circle of radius R and comparing the resulting N=(2,2) theories in 1+1 dimensions. Below the compactification scale, the theory on the Higgs branch reduces to the non-linear sigma model on a toric manifold. In the dual theory on the Coulomb branch, the Kaluza-Klein modes generate an infinite tower of contributions to the superpotential. After resummation, in the limit R->0 the superpotential becomes that of the Landau-Ginzburg model which is the two-dimensional mirror of the toric sigma model. We further examine the conjecture of all-scale three-dimensional mirror symmetry and observe that it is consistent with mirror symmetry in 1+1 dimensions.

Branes and Supersymmetry Breaking in Three Dimensional Gauge Theories

It is shown that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in certain three-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories, by using the s-rule in their string theory realization as brane configurations. In particular, supersymmetry is broken in N=3 supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory with gauge group SU(n) and CS coefficient k, as well as in its N=2 and N=1 deformations, when n>|k|. In addition, supersymmetry is broken in the N=1 mass deformation of N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(n) and one matter multiplet when n>1. In the latter case the breaking is induced by an instanton-generated repulsive potential.

Calabi-Yau Mirror Symmetry as a Gauge Theory Duality

We show that there are two different dualities of two dimensional gauge theories with N=(2,2) supersymmetry. One is basically a consequence of 3d mirror symmetry. The non-linear sigma model with Calabi-Yau target space on the Higgs branch of the gauge theory is mapped into an equivalent non-linear sigma model on the Coulomb branch of the dual theory, realizing a T-dual target space with torsion. The second duality is genuine to two dimensions. In addition to swapping Higgs and Coulomb branch it trades twisted for untwisted multiplets, implying a sign flip of the left moving U(1)_R charge. Succesive application of both dualities leads to geometric mirror symmetry for the target space Calabi-Yau.

Branes at Orbifolds versus Hanany Witten in Six Dimensions

We reconstruct non-trivial 6d theories obtained by Blum and Intriligator by considering IIB or SO(32) 5 branes at ALE spaces in the language of Hanany Witten setups. Using ST duality we make the equivalence of the two approaches manifest, thereby uncovering several new T-duality relations between the group theoretic data describing the embedding of the instantonic 5 brane in the ALE and brane positions in the Hanany Witten language. We construct several new 6d theories, which can be understood as arising on 5 branes in IIB orientifolds with oppositely charged orientifold planes recently introduced by Witten.

N=1 Dualities for Exceptional Gauge Groups and Quantum Global Symmetries

We discuss our attempts to generalize the known examples of dualities in N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories to exceptional gauge groups. We derive some dual pairs from known examples connected to exceptional groups and find an interesting phenomenon: sometimes the full global symmetry is ``hidden'' on the magnetic side. It is not realized as a symmetry on the fundamental fields in the Lagrangian. Rather, it emerges as a symmetry of the quantum theory. We then focus on an approach based on self-dual models. We construct duals for some very special matter content of $E_ 7$, $E_6$ and $F_4$. Again we find that the full global symmetry is not realized on the fundamental fields.
