Fully local Reshetikhin-Turaev theories

We define a symmetric tensor enhancement $\mathrm{E}\mathbb{F}$ with full duals of the 3-category $\mathbb{F}$ of fusion categories in which every Reshetikhin--Turaev theory has a fully local realization. Our $\mathrm{E}\mathbb{F}$ is a direct sum of invertible $\mathbb{F}$-modules, indexed by a $μ_6$-extension of the Witt group $W$ of non-degenerate braided fusion categories. Similarly, we enhance the 3-category $S\mathbb{F}$ of fusion super-categories to a symmetric tensor 3-category $\mathrm{E} S\mathbb{F}$ with full duals, which is a sum of invertible $S\mathbb{F}$-modules, indexed by an extension of the super-Witt group $SW$ with kernel the Pontrjagin dual of the stable stem $π_3^s$. The unit spectrum of $\mathrm{E}S\mathbb{F}$ is the connective cover of the Pontrjagin dual of $\mathbb{S}^{-3}$. We discuss tangential structures and central charges of the resulting TQFTs. We establish Spin-invariance of fusion supercategories and relate SO-invariance structures to modular and spherical structures. This confirms some conjectures from arxiv:1312.7188.

3d spectral networks and classical Chern-Simons theory

We define the notion of spectral network on manifolds of dimension $\le 3$. For a manifold $X$ equipped with a spectral network, we construct equivalences between Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over $X$ and Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathbb C}^\times$-bundles over ramified double covers $\widetilde X$. Applications include a new viewpoint on dilogarithmic formulas for Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over triangulated 3-manifolds, and an explicit description of Chern-Simons lines of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over triangulated surfaces. Our constructions heavily exploit the locality of Chern-Simons invariants, expressed in the language of extended (invertible) topological field theory.

Consistency of M-Theory on nonorientable manifolds

We prove that there is no parity anomaly in M-theory in the low-energy field theory approximation. Our approach is computational. We determine generators for the 12-dimensional bordism group of pin manifolds with a w_1-twisted integer lift of w_4; these are the manifolds on which Wick-rotated M-theory exists. The anomaly cancellation comes down to computing a specific eta-invariant and cubic form on these manifolds. Of interest beyond this specific problem are our expositions of: computational techniques for eta-invariants, the algebraic theory of cubic forms, Adams spectral sequence techniques, and anomalies for spinor fields and Rarita-Schwinger fields.

Anomalies in the Space of Coupling Constants and Their Dynamical Applications I

It is customary to couple a quantum system to external classical fields. One application is to couple the global symmetries of the system (including the Poincaré symmetry) to background gauge fields (and a metric for the Poincaré symmetry). Failure of gauge invariance of the partition function under gauge transformations of these fields reflects 't Hooft anomalies. It is also common to view the ordinary (scalar) coupling constants as background fields, i.e. to study the theory when they are spacetime dependent. We will show that the notion of 't Hooft anomalies can be extended naturally to include these scalar background fields. Just as ordinary 't Hooft anomalies allow us to deduce dynamical consequences about the phases of the theory and its defects, the same is true for these generalized 't Hooft anomalies. Specifically, since the coupling constants vary, we can learn that certain phase transitions must be present. We will demonstrate these anomalies and their applications in simple pedagogical examples in one dimension (quantum mechanics) and in some two, three, and four-dimensional quantum field theories. An anomaly is an example of an invertible field theory, which can be described as an object in (generalized) differential cohomology. We give an introduction to this perspective. Also, we use Quillen's superconnections to derive the anomaly for a free spinor field with variable mass. In a companion paper we will study four-dimensional gauge theories showing how our view unifies and extends many recently obtained results.

Anomalies in the Space of Coupling Constants and Their Dynamical Applications II

We extend our earlier work on anomalies in the space of coupling constants to four-dimensional gauge theories. Pure Yang-Mills theory (without matter) with a simple and simply connected gauge group has a mixed anomaly between its one-form global symmetry (associated with the center) and the periodicity of the $θ$-parameter. This anomaly is at the root of many recently discovered properties of these theories, including their phase transitions and interfaces. These new anomalies can be used to extend this understanding to systems without discrete symmetries (such as time-reversal). We also study $SU(N)$ and $Sp(N)$ gauge theories with matter in the fundamental representation. Here we find a mixed anomaly between the flavor symmetry group and the $θ$-periodicity. Again, this anomaly unifies distinct recently-discovered phenomena in these theories and controls phase transitions and the dynamics on interfaces.

On equivariant Chern-Weil forms and determinant lines

A strong from of invariance under a group G is manifested in a family over the classifying space BG. We advocate a differential-geometric avatar of BG when G is a Lie group. Applied to G-equivariant connections on smooth principal or vector bundles, the equivariance-->families principle converts the G-equivariant extensions of curvature and Chern-Weil forms to the standard nonequivariant versions. An application of this technique yields the moment map of the determinant line of a G-equivariant Dirac operator, which in turn sheds light on some anomaly formulas in quantum field theory.

Dirac Families for Loop Groups as Matrix Factorizations

We identify the category of integrable lowest-weight representations of the loop group LG of a compact Lie group G with the linear category of twisted, conjugation-equivariant curved Fredholm complexes on the group G: namely, the twisted, equivariant matrix factorizations of a super-potential built from the loop rotation action on LG. This lifts the isomorphism of K-groups of [FHT1,2, 3] to an equivalence of categories. The construction uses families of Dirac operators.

Short-range entanglement and invertible field theories

Quantum field theories with an energy gap can be approximated at long-range by topological quantum field theories. The same should be true for suitable condensed matter systems. For those with short range entanglement (SRE) the effective topological theory is invertible, and so amenable to study via stable homotopy theory. This leads to concrete topological invariants of gapped SRE phases which are finer than existing invariants. Computations in examples demonstrate their effectiveness.

Chern-Weil forms and abstract homotopy theory

We prove that Chern-Weil forms are the only natural differential forms associated to a connection on a principal G-bundle. We use the homotopy theory of simplicial sheaves on smooth manifolds to formulate the theorem and set up the proof. Other arguments come from classical invariant theory. We identify the Weil algebra as the de Rham complex of a specific simplicial sheaf, and similarly give a new interpretation of the Weil model in equivariant de Rham theory. There is an appendix proving a general theorem about set-theoretic transformations of polynomial functors. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Dan Quillen.

Twisted equivariant matter

We show how general principles of symmetry in quantum mechanics lead to twisted notions of a group representation. This framework generalizes both the classical 3-fold way of real/complex/quaternionic representations as well as a corresponding 10-fold way which has appeared in condensed matter and nuclear physics. We establish a foundation for discussing continuous families of quantum systems. Having done so, topological phases of quantum systems can be defined as deformation classes of continuous families of gapped Hamiltonians. For free particles there is an additional algebraic structure on the deformation classes leading naturally to notions of twisted equivariant K-theory. In systems with a lattice of translational symmetries we show that there is a canonical twisting of the equivariant K-theory of the Brillouin torus. We give precise mathematical definitions of two invariants of the topological phases which have played an important role in the study of topological insulators. Twisted equivariant K-theory provides a finer classification of topological insulators than has been previously available.

Loop Groups and Twisted K-Theory II

This is the second in a series of papers investigating the relationship between the twisted equivariant K-theory of a compact Lie group G and the "Verlinde ring" of its loop group. We introduce the Dirac family of Fredholm operators associated to a positive energy representation of a loop group. It determines a map from isomorphism classes of representations to twisted K-theory, which we prove is an isomorphism if $G$ is connected with torsion-free fundamental group. We also introduce a Dirac family for finite dimensional representations of compact Lie groups; it is closely related to both the Kirillov correspondence and the equivariant Thom isomorphism. In Part III (math.AT/0312155) we extend the proof of our main theorem to arbitrary compact Lie groups G and provide supplements in various directions. In Part I (arXiv:0711.1906) we develop twisted equivariant K-theory and carry out some of the computations needed here. We refer to the announcements math.AT/0312155 and math.AT/0206237 for further expository material and motivation.

Spin structures and superstrings

In superstring theory spin structures are present on both the 2-dimensional worldsheet and 10-dimensional spacetime. We present a new proposal for the B-field in superstring theory and demonstrate its interaction with worldsheet spin structures. Our formulation generalizes to orientifolds, where various twistings appear. A special case of the orientifold worldsheet B-field amplitude is a KO-theoretic construction of the Z/8Z-valued Kervaire invariant on pin-minus surfaces.

Loop groups and twisted K-theory I

This is the first in a series of papers investigating the relationship between the twisted equivariant K-theory of a compact Lie group G and the "Verlinde ring" of its loop group. In this paper we set up the foundations of twisted equivariant K-groups, and more generally twisted K-theory of groupoids. We establish enough basic properties to make effective computations. Using the Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence we compute the twisted equivariant K-groups of a compact connected Lie group G with torsion free fundamental group. We relate this computation to the representation theory of the loop group at a level related to the twisting.

Twisted equivariant K-theory with complex coefficients

Using a global version of the equivariant Chern character, we describe the complexified twisted equivariant K-theory of a space with a compact Lie group action in terms of fixed-point data. We apply this to the case of a compact Lie group acting on itself by conjugation, and relate the result to the Verlinde algebra and to the Kac numerator at q=1. Verlinde's formula is also discussed in this context.

Special Kahler Manifolds

We give an intrinsic definition of the special geometry which arises in global N=2 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The base of an algebraic integrable system exhibits this geometry, and with an integrality hypothesis any special Kahler manifold is so related to an integrable system. The cotangent bundle of a special Kahler manifold carries a hyperkahler metric. We also define special geometry in supergravity in terms of the special geometry in global supersymmetry.

Eta-Invariants and Determinant Lines

We study eta-invariants on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary. The dependence on boundary conditions is best summarized by viewing the (exponentiated) eta-invariant as an element of the (inverse) determinant line of the boundary. We prove a gluing law and a variation formula for this invariant. This yields a new, simpler proof of the holonomy formula for the determinant line bundle of a family of Dirac operators, also known as the ``global anomaly'' formula. Higher Algebraic Structures and Quantization

We derive (quasi-)quantum groups in 2+1 dimensional topological field theory directly from the classical action and the path integral. Detailed computations are carried out for the Chern-Simons theory with finite gauge group. The principles behind our computations are presumably more general. We extend the classical action in a d+1 dimensional topological theory to manifolds of dimension less than d+1. We then ``construct'' a generalized path integral which in d+1 dimensions reduces to the standard one and in d dimensions reproduces the quantum Hilbert space. In a 2+1 dimensional topological theory the path integral over the circle is the category of representations of a quasi-quantum group. In this paper we only consider finite theories, in which the generalized path integral reduces to a finite sum. New ideas are needed to extend beyond the finite theories treated here.

Chern-Simons Theory with Finite Gauge Group

These theories, which are surely some of the simplest possible quantum field theories, were introduced in a paper of Dijkgraaf and Witten. The path integral reduces to a finite sum, so it is quite amenable to direct mathematical study. Although the theory exisits in arbitrary dimensions, it is most interesting in $2+1$~dimensions, where it has a ``modular structure.'' This is related to quantum groups, and the precise details may give clues as to what happens in other contexts. This paper is written using AMSTeX 2.1, which can be obtained via ftp from the American Mathematical Society (instructions included). 1 encapsulated postscript file was submitted separately in uuencoded tar-compressed format.
