TCFHs, hidden symmetries and type II theories

We present the twisted covariant form hierarchies (TCFH) of type IIA and IIB 10-dimensional supergravities and show that all form bilinears of supersymmetric backgrounds satisfy the conformal Killing-Yano equation with respect to a TCFH connection. We also compute the Killing-Stäckel, Killing-Yano and closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of all spherically symmetric type II brane backgrounds and demonstrate that the geodesic flow on these solutions is completely integrable by giving all independent charges in involution. We then identify all form bilinears of common sector and D-brane backgrounds which generate hidden symmetries for particle and string probe actions. We also explore the question on whether charges constructed from form bilinears are sufficient to prove the integrability of probes on supersymmetric backgrounds.

Test of the CLAS12 RICH large scale prototype in the direct proximity focusing configuration

A large area ring-imaging Cherenkov detector has been designed to provide clean hadron identification capability in the momentum range from 3 GeV/c up to 8 GeV/c for the CLAS12 experiments at the upgraded 12 GeV continuous electron beam accelerator facility of Jefferson Laboratory. The adopted solution foresees a novel hybrid optics design based on aerogel radiator, composite mirrors and high-packed and high-segmented photon detectors. Cherenkov light will either be imaged directly (forward tracks) or after two mirror reflections (large angle tracks). We report here the results of the tests of a large scale prototype of the RICH detector performed with the hadron beam of the CERN T9 experimental hall for the direct detection configuration. The tests demonstrated that the proposed design provides the required pion-to-kaon rejection factor of 1:500 in the whole momentum range.

Spectral flow for nonunital spectral triples

We prove two results about nonunital index theory left open by [CGRS2]. The first is that the spectral triple arising from an action of the reals on a C*-algebra with invariant trace satisfies the hypotheses of the nonunital local index formula. The second result concerns the meaning of spectral flow in the nonunital case. For the special case of paths arising from the odd index pairing for smooth spectral triples in the nonunital setting we are able to connect with earlier approaches to the analytic definition of spectral flow.

The Effect of Varying Co layer thickness on the Time-Temperature Characteristics of Co/Sb Semimetal Embedded Magnetic Nanoparticles

We report the effect of varying cobalt thickness on the temperature-dependent time decay of the electrical resistance of Co/Sb multilayer samples. We find that for a given temperature, a five fold change in the Co thickness produces a 100 fold change in the characteristic decay time of the resistance. We find that the characteristic decay time, as a function of temperature, follows an Arrhenius law. During deposition, the Co evolves single domain magnetic nanoparticles, on the Sb, in either a Volmer-Weber or Stranski-Krastanov growth mode. This metastable state is then encased in 2.5 nm of Sb producing an embedded nanoparticle system. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) measurements taken before sample aging (annealing at a given temperature for enough time to complete the resistance decay) and after aging show that these nanoparticles undergo morphological transformations during aging. These transformations lead to well defined time dependent decays in both the magnetization and the electrical resistance, making this material an excellent candidate for an electronic time-temperature sensor.

Detailed Report of the MuLan Measurement of the Positive Muon Lifetime and Determination of the Fermi Constant

We present a detailed report of the method, setup, analysis and results of a precision measurement of the positive muon lifetime. The experiment was conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute using a time-structured, nearly 100%-polarized, surface muon beam and a segmented, fast-timing, plastic scintillator array. The measurement employed two target arrangements; a magnetized ferromagnetic target with a ~4 kG internal magnetic field and a crystal quartz target in a 130 G external magnetic field. Approximately 1.6 x 10^{12} positrons were accumulated and together the data yield a muon lifetime of tau_{mu}(MuLan) = 2196980.3(2.2) ps (1.0 ppm), thirty times more precise than previous generations of lifetime experiments. The lifetime measurement yields the most accurate value of the Fermi constant G_F (MuLan) = 1.1663787(6) x 10^{-5} GeV^{-2} (0.5 ppm). It also enables new precision studies of weak interactions via lifetime measurements of muonic atoms.

Families of Type {\rm III KMS} States on a Class of $C^*$-Algebras containing $O_n$ and $\mathcal{Q}_\N$

We construct a family of purely infinite $C^*$-algebras, $\mathcal{Q}^λ$ for $λ\in (0,1)$ that are classified by their $K$-groups. There is an action of the circle $\T$ with a unique ${\rm KMS}$ state $ψ$ on each $\mathcal{Q}^λ.$ For $λ=1/n,$ $\mathcal{Q}^{1/n}\cong O_n$, with its usual $\T$ action and ${\rm KMS}$ state. For $λ=p/q,$ rational in lowest terms, $\mathcal{Q}^λ\cong O_n$ ($n=q-p+1$) with UHF fixed point algebra of type $(pq)^\infty.$ For any $n>0,$ $\mathcal{Q}^λ\cong O_n$ for infinitely many $λ$ with distinct KMS states and UHF fixed-point algebras. For any $λ\in (0,1),$ $\mathcal{Q}^λ\neq O_\infty.$ For $λ$ irrational the fixed point algebras, are NOT AF and the $\mathcal{Q}^λ$ are usually NOT Cuntz algebras. For $λ$ transcendental, $K_1\cong K_0\cong\Z^\infty$, so that $\mathcal{Q}^λ$ is Cuntz' $\mathcal Q_{\N}$, \cite{Cu1}. If $λ^{\pm 1}$ are both algebraic integers, the {\bf only} $O_n$ which appear satisfy $n\equiv 3(mod 4).$ For each $λ$, the representation of $\mathcal{Q}^λ$ defined by the KMS state $ψ$ generates a type ${\rm III}_λ$ factor. These algebras fit into the framework of modular index (twisted cyclic) theory of \cite{CPR2,CRT} and \cite{CNNR}.

Measurement of the Positive Muon Lifetime and Determination of the Fermi Constant to Part-per-Million Precision

We report a measurement of the positive muon lifetime to a precision of 1.0 parts per million (ppm); it is the most precise particle lifetime ever measured. The experiment used a time-structured, low-energy muon beam and a segmented plastic scintillator array to record more than 2 x 10^{12} decays. Two different stopping target configurations were employed in independent data-taking periods. The combined results give tau_{mu^+}(MuLan) = 2196980.3(2.2) ps, more than 15 times as precise as any previous experiment. The muon lifetime gives the most precise value for the Fermi constant: G_F(MuLan) = 1.1663788 (7) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (0.6 ppm). It is also used to extract the mu^-p singlet capture rate, which determines the proton's weak induced pseudoscalar coupling g_P.

Massive 4D, N = 1 Superspin 1 & 3/2 Multiplets and Dualities

Lagrangians for several new off-shell 4D, N = 1 supersymmetric descriptions of massive superspin-1 and superspin-3/2 multiplets are described. Taken together with the models previously constructed, there are now four off-shell formulations for the massive gravitino multiplet (superspin-1) and six off-shell formulations for the massive graviton multiplet (superspin-3/2). Duality transformations are derived which relate some of these dynamical systems.

Field Strengths of Linearized 5D, N = 1 Superfield Supergravity On a 3-Brane

Recently a description of linearized 5D supergravity in 4D, N =1 superspace was presented. By analyzing the on-shell component Lagrangian, this description was proven to be Lorentz invariant in five dimensions. This paper describes a geometric formulation of the 5D supergravity in 4D, N =1 superspace. Using this new formalism, the on-shell structure of the previous description is verified from purely superspace methods. This geometric description provides a connection to dimensionally reduced manifestly supersymmetric 5D supergravity.

M-theory on Spin(7) Manifolds, Fluxes and 3D, N=1 Supergravity

We calculate the most general causal N=1 three-dimensional, gauge invariant action coupled to matter in superspace and derive its component form using Ectoplasmic integration theory. One example of such an action can be obtained by compactifying M-theory on a Spin(7) holonomy manifold taking non-vanishing fluxes into account. We show that the resulting three-dimensional theory is in agreement with the more general construction. The scalar potential resulting from Kaluza-Klein compactification stabilizes all the moduli fields describing deformations of the metric except for the radial modulus. This potential can be written in terms of the superpotential previously discussed in the literature.

The Off-shell (3/2, 2) Supermultiplets Revisited

Using superspace projection operators we provide a classification of (3/2,2) off-shell supermultiplets which are realized in terms of a real axial vector superfield, with or without compensating superfields. Any linearized supergravity action is shown to be a superposition of those corresponding to (i) old minimal supergravity, (ii) new minimal supergravity and (iii) the novel (3/2,2) off-shell supermultiplet with 12+12 degrees of freedom obtained in hep-th/0201096.

New 4D, N = 1 Superfield Theory: Model of Free Massive Superspin-3/2 Multiplet

We present a Lagrangian formulation for the free superspin-3/2 massive 4D, N=1 superfield. The model is described by a dynamical real vector superfield and an auxiliary real scalar superfield. The corresponding multiplet contains spin-1, spin-2 and two spin-3/2 propagating component fields on-shell. The auxillary superfield is needed to ensure that the on-shell vector superfield carries only the irreducible representation of the Poincare supergroup with a given mass and the fixed superspin of 3/2. The bosonic sector of the component level of the model is also presented.

Future Diffractive Structure Function Measurements at HERA

The purposes and possibilities of future diffractive structure function measurements at HERA are presented. A review of the current range and accuracy of the measurement of $F_2^{D(3)}(β, x_p, Q^2)$ is presented and an estimate of the precision of future measurements is given. A feasibility study is performed on the measurement of the structure functions $F_2^{D(4)}(β, x_p, Q^2, t)$, $F_{2 charm}^{D}$, $R^{D(3)}$, $R^{D(4)}$ and $F_L^{p}$. Included in this study are estimates of the integrated luminosity required, the analysis techniques to be employed and values of systematic error that could be expected.
