Conceptual design of the Spin Physics Detector

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

Strangeness ${S=-3}$ and ${-4}$ baryon-baryon interactions in chiral effective field theory

Studies of the baryon-baryon interaction involving hyperons within chiral effective field theory, so far performed up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the chiral expansion, have shown that for the strangeness $S=-1$ ($ΛN$, $ΣN$) and $S=-2$ ($ΛΛ$, $ΞN$) sectors a consistent and satisfactory description of the available scattering data and experimental constraints can be achieved based on the assumption of broken SU(3) flavor symmetry. We explore the possible extension of this approach at the NLO level to strangeness $S=-3$ and $S=-4$ baryon-baryon systems where empirical information is rather scarce. Specifically we address the question how measurements of two-body correlation functions in heavy-ion collisions and/or in high-energetic proton-proton collisions can help to constrain the interaction in channels like $ΞΛ$ or $ΞΞ$.

Comment on "$Λ_c N$ interaction in leading order covariant chiral effective field theory"

Song et al. [Phys. Rev. C 102, 065208 (2020)] presented results for the $Λ_c N$ interaction based on an extrapolation of lattice simulations by the HAL QCD Collaboration at unphysical quark masses to the physical point via covariant chiral effective field theory. We point out that their predictions for the $^3D_1$ partial wave disagree with available lattice results. We discuss the origin of that disagreement and present a comparison with predictions from conventional (non-relativistic) chiral effective field theory.

Exploring the $Λ$-deuteron interaction via correlations in heavy-ion collisions

$Λ$-deuteron two-particle momentum correlation functions, to be measured in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, are investigated. In particular, the question is addressed whether such correlations can serve as an additional and alternative source of information on the elementary $ΛN$ interaction. The study is performed within the Lednicky-Lyuboshits formalism, utilizing an effective range expansion for the two relevant $S$-wave $Λd$ amplitudes with parameters taken from the literature. It is found that in collisions characterized by a large emitting source the $Λd$ correlation function is predominatly sensitive to the quartet state ($^4S_{3/2}$). In contrast, for small source sizes the contribution from the doublet partial wave ($^2S_{1/2}$) could be significant. Though the latter is constrained by the hypertriton binding energy, its present experimental uncertainty impedes an accurate determination of the doublet amplitude and, in turn, complicates conclusions on the quartet state.

Femtoscopic correlations and the $Λ_c N$ interaction

We study the prospects for deducing constraints on the interaction of charmed baryons with nucleons from measurements of two-particle momentum correlation functions for $Λ_c p$. The correlation functions are calculated for $Λ_c N$ and $Σ_c N$ interactions that have been extrapolated from lattice QCD simulations at unphysical masses of $m_π=410-570$ MeV to the physical point using chiral effective field theory as guideline. In addition, we consider phenomenological $Y_c N$ models from the literature to explore the sensitivity of the results to the properties of the interaction in detail. We find that a measurement of the $Λ_c p$ correlation functions could indeed allow one to discriminate between strongly attractive $Λ_c N$ forces, as predicted by some phenomenological models, and a weakly attractive interaction as suggested by the presently available lattice simulations.

Hyperon-nucleon interaction within chiral effective field theory revisited

The $ΛN$ and $ΣN$ interactions are considered at next-to-leading order in SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Different options for the low-energy constants that determine the strength of the contact interactions are explored. Two variants are analysed in detail which yield equivalent results for $ΛN$ and $ΣN$ scattering observables but differ in the strength of the $ΛN \to ΣN$ transition potential. The influence of this difference on predictions for light hypernuclei and on the properties of the $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons in nuclear matter is investigated and discussed. The effect of the variation in the potential strength of the $ΛN$-$ΣN$ coupling (also called $Λ-Σ$ conversion) is found to be moderate for the considered $^3_Λ\rm H$ and $^4_Λ\rm He$ hypernuclei but sizable in case of the matter properties. Further, the size of three-body forces and their relation to different approaches to hypernuclear interactions is discussed.

Hyperons in nuclear matter from SU(3) chiral effective field theory

Brueckner theory is used to investigate the properties of hyperons in nuclear matter. The hyperon-nucleon interaction is taken from chiral effective field theory at next-to-leading order with SU(3) symmetric low-energy constants. Furthermore, the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction is also derived within chiral effective field theory. We present the single-particle potentials of Lambda and Sigma hyperons in symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter computed with the continuous choice for intermediate spectra. The results are in good agreement with the empirical information. In particular, our calculation gives a repulsive Sigma-nuclear potential and a weak Lambda-nuclear spin-orbit force.

Polarized proton-deuteron scattering as a test of time-reversal invariance

Scattering of protons with transversal polarization $p_y^p$ on deuterons with tensor polarization $P_{xz}$ provides a null-test signal for time-reversal (T) invariance violating but parity (P) conserving effects. We calculate the corresponding null-test observable at beam energies 100-1000 MeV within the spin-dependent Glauber theory considering T-violating P-conserving nucleon-nucleon interactions. The S-wave component of the deuteron wave function as well as the D-wave are taken into account and the latter is found to play an important role for the magnitude and the energy dependence of the observable in question. Specifically, with inclusion of the D wave the maximum of the obtained signal is shifted to higher beam energies, i.e. to 700-800 MeV.

The electromagnetic form factors of the $Λ$ in the timelike region

The reaction $e^+e^- \to \bar ΛΛ$ is investigated for energies close to the threshold. Specific emphasis is put on the role played by the interaction in the final $\bar ΛΛ$ system which is taken into account rigorously. For that interaction a variety of $\bar ΛΛ$ potential models is employed that have been constructed for the analysis of the reaction $\bar p p \to \bar ΛΛ$ in the past. The enhancement of the effective form factor for energies close to the $\bar ΛΛ$ threshold, seen in pertinent experiments, is reproduced. Predictions for the $Λ$ electromagnetic form factors $G_M$ and $G_E$ in the timelike region and for spin-dependent observables such as spin-correlation parameters are presented.

A study of hyperons in nuclear matter based on chiral effective field theory

The in-medium properties of a hyperon-nucleon potential, derived within chiral effective field theory and fitted to Lambda-N and Sigma-N scattering data, are investigated. Results for the single-particle potentials of the Lambda and Sigma hyperons in nuclear matter are reported, based on a conventional first-order Brueckner calculation. The Sigma-nucleus potential is found to be repulsive, in agreement with phenomenological information. A weak Lambda-nucleus spin-orbit interaction can be achieved by an appropriate adjustment of a low-energy constant corresponding to an antisymmetric Lambda-N -- Sigma-N spin-orbit interaction that arises at next-to-leading order in the effective field theory approach.

Eta photoproduction in a combined analysis of pion- and photon-induced reactions

The $ηN$ final state is isospin-selective and thus provides access to the spectrum of excited nucleons without being affected by excited $Δ$ states. To this end, the world database on eta photoproduction off the proton up to a center-of-mass energy of $E\sim 2.3$ GeV is analyzed, including data on differential cross sections, and single and double polarization observables. The resonance spectrum and its properties are determined in a combined analysis of eta and pion photoproduction off the proton together with the reactions $πN\to πN$, $ηN$, $KΛ$ and $KΣ$. For the analysis, the so-called Jülich coupled-channel framework is used, incorporating unitarity, analyticity, and effective three-body channels. Parameters tied to photoproduction and hadronic interactions are varied simultaneously. The influence of recent MAMI $T$ and $F$ asymmetry data on the eta photoproduction amplitude is discussed in detail.

Exact calculations of a quasi-bound state in the $\bar{K} \bar{K} N$ system

Dynamically exact calculations of a quasi-bound state in the $\bar{K}\bar{K}N$ three-body system are performed using Faddeev-type AGS equations. As input two phenomenological and one chirally motivated $\bar{K}N$ potentials are used, which describe the experimental information on the $\bar{K}N$ system equally well and produce either a one- or two-pole structure of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance. For the $\bar{K}\bar{K}$ interaction separable potentials are employed that are fitted to phase shifts obtained from two theoretical models. The first one is a phenomenological $\bar{K}\bar{K}$ potential based on meson exchange, which is derived by SU(3) symmetry arguments from the Jülich $ππ- \bar{K} K$ coupled-channels model. The other interaction is a variant of the first one, which is adjusted to the $KK$ s-wave scattering length recently determined in lattice QCD simulations. The position and width of the $\bar{K}\bar{K}N$ quasi-bound state is evaluated in two ways: (i) by a direct pole search in the complex energy plane and (ii) using an "inverse determinant" method, where one needs to calculate the determinant of the AGS system of equations only for real energies. A quasi-bound state is found with binding energy $B_{\bar{K}\bar{K}N} = 12 - 26$ MeV and width $Γ_{\bar{K}\bar{K}N} = 61 - 102$ MeV, which could correspond to the experimentally observed $Ξ(1950)$ state.

On the near-threshold $\bar pp$ invariant mass spectrum measured in $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ decays

A systematic analysis of the near-threshold enhancement in the $\bar pp$ invariant mass spectrum seen in the decay reactions $J/ψ\to x \bar pp$ and $ψ(3686) \to x \bar pp$ $(x = γ,\, ω,\, ρ,\, π,\, η)$ is presented. The enhancement is assumed to be due to the $\bar NN$ final-state interaction (FSI) and the pertinent FSI effects are evaluated in an approach that is based on the distorted-wave Born approximation. For the $\bar NN$ interaction a recent potential derived within chiral effective field theory and fitted to results of a partial-wave analysis of $\bar pp$ scattering data is considered and, in addition, an older phenomenological model constructed by the Jülich group. It is shown that the near-threshold spectrum observed in various decay reactions can be reproduced simultaneously and consistently by our treatment of the $\bar pp$ FSI. It turns out that the interaction in the isospin-1 $^1S_0$ channel required for the description of the $J/ψ\to γ\bar pp$ decay predicts a $\bar NN$ bound state.

Photocouplings at the Pole from Pion Photoproduction

The reactions $γp\toπ^0 p$ and $γp\toπ^+ n$ are analyzed in a semi-phenomenological approach up to $E\sim2.3$ GeV. Fits to differential cross section and single and double polarization observables are performed. A good overall reproduction of the available photoproduction data is achieved. The Jülich2012 dynamical coupled-channel model -which describes elastic $πN$ scattering and the world data base of the reactions $πN\toηN$, $KΛ$, and $KΣ$ at the same time - is employed as the hadronic interaction in the final state. The framework guarantees analyticity and, thus, allows for a reliable extraction of resonance parameters in terms of poles and residues. In particular, the photocouplings at the pole can be extracted and are presented.

Polarized deuteron charge-exchange reaction $dp->{pp}_sNπ$ in the Delta-isobar region

Mechanisms of the charge exchange reaction $dp\to \{pp\}_{\!s} Nπ$, where $\{pp\}_{\!s}$ is a two-proton system at low excitation energy, are studied at beam energies 1 -- 2 GeV and for invariant masses $M_X$ of the final $Nπ$ system that correspond to the formation of the $Δ(1232)$ isobar. The direct mechanism, where the initial proton is excited into the $Δ(1232)$, dominates and explains the existing data on the unpolarized differential cross section and spherical tensor analyzing power $T_{22}$ for $M_X> 1.2$ GeV/$c^2$. However, this model fails to describe $T_{20}.

Strangeness S=-2 baryon-baryon interaction at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory

The strangeness $S=-2$ baryon-baryon interaction is studied in chiral effective field theory up to next-to-leading order. The potential at this order consists of contributions from one- and two-pseudoscalar-meson exchange diagrams and from four-baryon contact terms without and with two derivatives. SU(3) flavor symmetry is imposed for constructing the interaction in the $S=-2$ sector. Specifically, the couplings of the pseudoscalar mesons to the baryons are fixed by SU(3) symmetry and, in general, also the contact terms are related via SU(3) symmetry to those determined in a previous study of the $S=-1$ hyperon-nucleon interaction. The explicit SU(3) symmetry breaking due to the physical masses of the pseudoscalar mesons ($π$, $K$, $η$) is taken into account. It is argued that the $ΞN$ interaction has to be relatively weak to be in accordance with available experimental constraints. In particular, the published values and upper bounds for the $Ξ^- p$ elastic and inelastic cross sections apparently rule out a somewhat stronger attractive $ΞN$ force and, specifically, disfavor any near-threshold deuteron-like bound states in that system.

The $ψ$(3770) resonance and its production in $\bar pp \to D \bar D$

The production of a $D\bar D$ meson-pair in antiproton-proton ($\bar p p$) annihilation close to the production threshold is investigated, with special emphasis on the role played by the $ψ$(3770) resonance. The study is performed in a meson-baryon model where the elementary charm production process is described by baryon exchange. Effects of the interactions in the initial and final states are taken into account rigorously, where the latter involves also those due to the $ψ$(3770). The predictions for the $D\bar D$ production cross section are in the range of 30 -- 250 nb, the contribution from the $ψ$(3770) resonance itself amounts to roughly 20 -- 80 nb.

Do $ΞΞ$ bound states exist?

The existence of baryon-baryon bound states in the strangeness sector is examined in the framework of SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Specifically, the role of SU(3) symmetry breaking contact terms that arise at next-to-leading order in the employed Weinberg power counting scheme is explored. We focus on the 1S0 partial wave and on baryon-baryon channels with maximal isospin since in this case there are only two independent SU(3) symmetry breaking contact terms. At the same time, those are the channels where most of the bound states have been predicted in the past. Utilizing $pp$ phase shifts and $Σ^+ p$ cross section data allows us to pin down one of the SU(3) symmetry breaking contact terms and a clear indication for the decrease of attraction when going from the NN system to strangeness S=-2 is found, which rules out a bound state for $ΣΣ$ with isospin I=2. Assuming that the trend observed for S=0 to S=-2 is not reversed when going to $ΞΣ$ and $ΞΞ$ makes also bound states in those systems rather unlikely.

Production of charmed pseudoscalar mesons in antiproton-proton annihilation

We study the production of charmed mesons (D, D_s) in antiproton-proton annihilation close to the reaction thresholds. The elementary charm production process is described by baryon exchange and in the constituent quark model, respectively. Effects of the interactions in the initial and final states are taken into account rigorously. The calculations are performed in close analogy to our earlier study on pbarp to KbarK by connecting the processes via SU(4) flavor symmetry. Our predictions for the DDbar production cross section are in the order of 10^{-2} -- 10^{-1} mu b. They turned out to be comparable to those obtained in other studies. The cross section for a D_sD_s pair is found to be of the same order of magnitude despite the fact that its production in pbarp scattering requires a two-step process.

The electromagnetic form factors of the proton in the timelike region

The reactions ppbar -> e+e- and e+e- -> ppbar are analyzed in the near-threshold region. Specific emphasis is put on the role played by the interaction in the initial- or final antinucleon-nucleon state which is taken into account rigorously. For that purpose a recently published NNbar potential derived within chiral effective field theory and fitted to results of a new partial-wave analysis of ppbar scattering data is employed. Our results provide strong support for the conjecture that the pronounced energy dependence of the e+e- <-> ppbar cross section, seen in pertinent experiments, is primarily due to the ppbar interaction. Predictions for the proton electromagnetic form factors G_E and G_M in the timelike region, close to the NNbar threshold, and for spin-dependent observables are presented. The steep rise of the effective form factor for energies close to the ppbar threshold is explained solely in terms of the ppbar interaction. The corresponding experimental information is quantitatively described by our calculation.

Baryon-baryon interactions from chiral effective field theory

Results from an ongoing study of baryon-baryon systems with strangeness S=-1 and -2 within chiral effective field theory are reported. The investigations are based on the scheme proposed by Weinberg which has been applied rather successfully to the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the past. Results for the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions obtained to leading order are reviewed. Specifically, the issue of extrapolating the binding energy of the H-dibaryon, extracted from recent lattice QCD simulations, to the physical point is addressed. Furthermore, first results for the hyperon-nucleon interaction at next-to-leading order are presented and discussed.

Coupled-channel dynamics in the reactions piN --> piN, etaN, KLambda, KSigma

Elastic piN scattering and the world data of the family of reactions pi^- p --> eta n, K^0 Lambda$, K^0 Sigma^0, K^+ Sigma^-, and pi^+ p --> K^+ Sigma^+ are described simultaneously in an analytic, unitary, coupled-channel approach. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate both the t- and the u- channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. Partial-wave amplitudes are determined and the resonance content is extracted from the analytic continuation, including resonance positions and branching ratios, and possible sources of uncertainties are discussed. The results provide the final-state interactions for the ongoing analysis of photo- and electroproduction data.

Elastic pbar-d scattering and total pbar-d cross sections

Elastic pbar-d scattering is studied within the Glauber theory based on the single- and double pbar-N scattering mechanisms. The full spin dependence of the elementary pbar-N scattering amplitudes is taken into account and both the S- and D-wave components of the deuteron are considered. The treatment of the spin dependence is done in a (properly modified) formalism developed recently by Platonova and Kukulin for the pd -> pd scattering process. Predictions for differential cross sections and the spin observables A_y^d, A_y^pbar, A_xx, A_yy are presented for antiproton beam energies between 50 and 300 MeV, using amplitudes generated from the Nbar-N interaction model developed by the Juelich group. Total polarized cross sections are calculated utilizing the optical theorem. The efficiency of the polarization buildup for antiprotons in a storage ring is investigated.

Final-State Interactions in the Process pp -> pKLambda

The possibility to determine the pLambda scattering length from the final-state interaction in the reaction pp->pKLambda is investigated experimentally. From a transversely polarized measurement, the K analyzing power (A_N) which, in principle, allows one to extract the spin triplet scattering length is studied. An unexpected energy dependence of the forward/backward symmetric part of A_N is found. The influence of N*-resonances on the pLambda invariant mass spectrum is investigated by exploiting the large acceptance for the process pp->pKLambda->pKppi and is found to be the main source of uncertainty for determining the pLambda scattering length.

Hyperon-nucleon interaction at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory

At the order considered there are contributions from one- and two-pseudoscalar-meson exchange diagrams and from four-baryon contact terms without and with two derivatives. SU(3) flavor symmetry is imposed for constructing the hyperon-nucleon interaction while the explicit SU(3) symmetry breaking by the physical masses of the pseudoscalar mesons (pi, K, eta) is taken into account. An excellent description of the hyperon-nucleon system can be achieved at next-to-leading order. It is on the same level of quality as the one obtained by the most advanced phenomenological hyperon-nucleon interaction models.

Study of the $Λp$ Interaction Close to the $Σ^+n$ and $Σ^0p$ Thresholds

The $Λp$ interaction close to the $ΣN$ threshold is considered. Specifically, the pronounced structure seen in production reactions like $K^-d \to π^- Λp$ and $pp\to K^+ Λp$ around the $ΣN$ threshold is analyzed. Modern interaction models of the coupled $ΛN - ΣN$ systems generate such a structure either due to the presence of a (deuteron-like) unstable bound state or of an inelastic virtual state. % A determination of the position of the prominent peak as observed in various experiments for the two aforementioned reactions leads to values that agree quite well with each other. Furthermore, the deduced mean value of $2128.7\pm 0.3$ MeV for the peak position coincides practically with the threshold energy of the $Σ^+ n$ channel. This supports the interpretation of the structure as a genuine cusp, signaling an inelastic virtual state in the $^3S_1-^3D_1$ partial wave of the $ΣN$ isospin 1/2 channel. % There is also evidence for a second peak (or shoulder) in the data sets considered which appears at roughly 10-15 MeV above the $ΣN$ threshold. However, its concrete position varies significantly from data set to data set and, thus, a theoretical interpretation is difficult.

Precise calculation of the two-step process for K- d -> pi Sigma N in the Lambda (1405) resonance region

The reaction K- d -> pi Sigma N is investigated taking into account single scattering and the two-step process due to Kbar N -> pi Sigma rescattering. The influence of some common approximations are examined. It is found that the treatment of the kinematics in the Green's function that appears in the loop integral of the rescattering process has a rather strong impact on the resulting lineshape of the pi Sigma invariant mass spectrum. Specifically, a calculation with correct kinematics where the three-body unitarity cut due to the nK- p threshold occurs at the physical value yields a pronounced peak in the invariant mass spectrum at this threshold and, at the same time, suppresses the signal in the region of the Lambda(1405) resonance. On the other hand, an approximation applied in past calculations shifts that threshold down and, consequently, leads to an accidental and therefore erroneous enhancement of the signal of the Lambda(1405) in the pi Sigma invariant mass spectrum.

Dynamical coupled-channel approaches on a momentum lattice

Dynamical coupled-channel approaches are a widely used tool in hadronic physics that allow to analyze different reactions and partial waves in a consistent way. In such approaches the basic interactions are derived within an effective Lagrangian framework and the resulting pseudo-potentials are then unitarized in a coupled-channel scattering equation. We propose a scheme that allows for a solution of the arising integral equation in discretized momentum space for periodic as well as twisted boundary conditions. This permits to study finite size effects as they appear in lattice QCD simulations. The new formalism, at this stage with a restriction to S-waves, is applied to coupled-channel models for the sigma(600), f0(980), and a0(980) mesons, and also for the Lambda(1405) baryon. Lattice spectra are predicted.

Exotic bound states of two baryons in light of chiral effective field theory

Baryon-baryon bound states in the strangeness S=-2, S=-3, and S=-4 sectors are considered. In particular, the dependence of the corresponding binding energies on the quark mass (or equivalently the pion mass) is explored in the framework of chiral effective field theory, in order to connect with current lattice QCD calculations. For a bound state in the Xi-Xi 1S0 channel, predicted by our leading-order effective field theory interaction, binding energies are inferred that are roughly in line with a recent lattice QCD result at meson and baryon masses that correspond to those in the lattice simulation. With regard to the so-called H-dibaryon it is shown that the SU(3) breaking effects induced by the differences of the pertinent two-baryon thresholds (Lambda-Lambda, Xi-N, Sigma-Sigma) have a very pronounced impact on its binding energy. A bound H-dibaryon as found in two lattice calculations could be shifted above the Lambda-Lambda or even above the Xi-N threshold for physical masses of the involved baryons.

Pion photoproduction in a dynamical coupled-channels model

The charged and neutral pion photoproduction reactions are investigated in a dynamical coupled-channels approach based on the formulation of Haberzettl, Huang, and Nakayama [Phys. Rev. The hadronic final-state interaction is provided by the Juelich pi-N model, which includes the channels pi-N and eta-N comprising stable hadrons as well as the effective pi-pi-N channels pi-Delta, sigma-N, and rho-N. This hadronic model has been quite successful in describing pi-N to pi-N scattering for center-of-mass energies up to 1.9 GeV. By construction, the full pion photoproduction current satisfies the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity and thus is gauge invariant as a matter of course. Scattering lengths of strangeness S=-2 baryon-baryon interactions

We reconsider a method based on dispersion theory, that allows one to extract the scattering length of any two-baryon system from corresponding final-state interactions in production reactions. The application of the method to baryon-baryon systems with strangeness S=-2 and S=-3 systems is discussed. Theoretical uncertainties due to the presence of inelastic channels with near-by thresholds are examined for the specific situation of the reaction K^- d -> K^0 Lambda Lambda and the coupling of Lambda Lambda to the Xi N channel. The possibility to disentangle spin-triplet and spin-singlet scattering lengths by means of various polarization measurements is demonstrated for several production reactions in K^- d and gamma d scattering. Employing the method to available data on the Lambda Lambda invariant mass from the reaction ^{12}C(K^-,K^+ Lambda Lambda X), a 1S0 scattering length of a(Lambda Lambda)=-1.2\pm 0.6 fm is deduced.

Spin dependence of the antinucleon-nucleon interaction

The status of our present knowledge on the antinucleon-nucleon interaction at low and medium energies is discussed. Special emphasis is put on aspects related to its spin dependence which are relevant for experiments planned by the PAX collaboration. Predictions for the spin-dependent antiproton-proton cross sections sigma_1 and sigma_2 are presented, utilizing antinucleon-nucleon potential models developed by the Juelich group, and compared to results based on the amplitudes of the Nijmegen partial-wave analysis.

Spin-dependent pbar-d cross sections at low and intermediate energies

Antiproton-deuteron (${\bar p}d$) scattering is calculated at beam energies below 300 MeV within the Glauber approach, utilizing the amplitudes of the Jülich $\bar N N$ models. A good agreement is obtained with available experimental data on upolarized differential and integrated $\bar p d$ cross sections. Predictions for polarized total ${\bar p}d$ cross sections are presented, obtained within the single scattering approximation including Coulomb-nuclear interference effects. It is found that the total longitudinal and transversal ${\bar p}d$ cross sections are comparable in absolute value to those for ${\bar p}p$ scattering. The kinetics of polarization buildup is considered.

To bind or not to bind: The H-dibaryon in light of chiral effective field theory

We analyse the quark mass dependence of the binding energy of the H-dibaryon in the framework of chiral effective field theory. We show that the SU(3) breaking effects induced by the differences of the pertinent two-baryon thresholds (Lambda-Lambda, Xi-N, Sigma-Sigma) have a very pronounced impact that need to be incorporated properly in future lattice QCD simulations. We also point out that if the H-dibaryon is a two-baryon bound state, its dominant component is Xi-N rather than Lambda-Lambda, which is a consequence of the approximate SU(3) flavor symmetry of the two-baryon interactions.

Analysis of recent eta photoproduction data

Recent data on eta-meson photoproduction off a proton target in the energy range 2 < sqrt{s} < 3 GeV are analyzed with regard to their overall consistency. Results from the ELSA and CLAS measurements are compared with predictions of a Regge model whose reaction amplitude was fixed via a global fit to pre-2000 measurements of differential cross sections and polarization observables for gamma p -> eta p at higher energies. We find that all recent experimental results on differential cross sections for eta-meson photoproduction are in good agreement with each other, except for the CLAS data from 2009. However, the latter can be made consistent with the other data at the expense of introducing an energy-dependent renormalization factor. We point out that there indications in the data for a possible excitation of baryon resonances with masses around 2.1 and 2.4 GeV.

Charm production in antiproton-proton annihilation

We study the production of charmed mesons (D) and baryons (Lambda_c) in antiproton-proton (app) annihilation close to their respective production thresholds. The elementary charm production process is described by either baryon/meson exchange or by quark/gluon dynamics. Effects of the interactions in the initial and final states are taken into account rigorously. The calculations are performed in close analogy to our earlier study on app -> antiLambda-Lambda and app -> antiK-K by connecting the processes via SU(4) flavor symmetry. Our predictions for the antiLambda_c-Lambda_c production cross section are in the order of 1 to 7 mb, i.e. a factor of around 10-70 smaller than the corresponding cross sections for antiLambda-Lambda However, they are 100 to 1000 times larger than predictions of other model calculations in the literature. On the other hand, the resulting cross sections for antiD-D production are found to be in the order of 10^{-2} -- 10^{-1} microbarn and they turned out to be comparable to those obtained in other studies.

DN interaction from meson exchange

A model of the DN interaction is presented which is developed in close analogy to the meson-exchange KbarN potential of the Juelich group utilizing SU(4) symmetry constraints. The main ingredients of the interaction are provided by vector meson (rho, omega) exchange and higher-order box diagrams involving D*N, DΔ, and D*Δintermediate states. The coupling of DN to the pi-Lambda_c and pi-Sigma_c channels is taken into account. The interaction model generates the Lambda_c(2595) resonance dynamically as a DN quasi-bound state. Results for DN total and differential cross sections are presented and compared with predictions of an interaction model that is based on the leading-order Weinberg-Tomozawa term. Some features of the Lambda_c(2595) resonance are discussed and the role of the near-by pi-Sigma_c threshold is emphasized. Selected predictions of the orginal KbarN model are reported too. Specifically, it is pointed out that the model generates two poles in the partial wave corresponding to the Lambda(1405) resonance.

Primakoff effect in eta-photoproduction off protons

We analyse data on forward eta-meson photoproduction off a proton target and extract the eta to gamma gamma decay width utilizing the Primakoff effect. The hadronic amplitude that enters into our analysis is strongly constrained because it is fixed from a global fit to available gamma p to p eta data for differential cross sections and polarizations. We compare our results with present information on the two-photon eta-decay from the literature. We provide predictions for future PrimEx experiments at Jefferson Laboratory in order to motivate further studies.

Proton-proton scattering above 3 GeV/c

A large set of data on proton-proton differential cross sections, analyzing powers and the double polarization parameter A_NN is analyzed employing the Regge formalism. We find that the data available at proton beam momenta from 3 GeV/c to 50 GeV/c exhibit features that are very well in line with the general characteristics of Regge phenomenology and can be described with a model that includes the rho, omega, f_2, and a_2 trajectories and single Pomeron exchange. Additional data, specifically for spin-dependent observables at forward angles, would be very helpful for testing and refining our Regge model.

Backward pion photoproduction

We present a systematic analysis of backward pion photoproduction for the reactions gamma p -> pi0 p and gamma p -> pi+ n. Regge phenomenology is applied at invariant collision energies above 3 GeV in order to fix the reaction amplitude. A comparision with older data on pi0- and pi+ photoproduction at theta = 180 degrees indicates that the high-energy limit as given by the Regge calculation could be reached possibly at energies of around sqrt{s} = 3 GeV. In the energy region of sqrt{s} < 2.5 GeV, covered by the new measurements of gamma p -> pi0 p differential cross sections at large angles at ELSA, JLab, and LEPS, we see no clear signal for a convergence towards the Regge results. The baryon trajectories obtained in our analysis are in good agreement with those given by the spectrum of excited baryons.

Backward pion-nucleon scattering

A global analysis of the world data on differential cross sections and polarization asymmetries of backward pion-nucleon scattering for invariant collision energies above 3 GeV is performed in a Regge model. Including the $N_α$, $N_γ$, $Δ_δ$ and $Δ_β$ trajectories, we reproduce both angular distributions and polarization data for small values of the Mandelstam variable $u$, in contrast to previous analyses. The model amplitude is used to obtain evidence for baryon resonances with mass below 3 GeV. Our analysis suggests a $G_{39}$ resonance with a mass of 2.83 GeV as member of the $Δ_β$ trajectory from the corresponding Chew-Frautschi plot.

Extraction of the strong neutron-proton mass difference from the charge symmetry breaking in pn-->d pi0

We perform a complete calculation of charge symmetry breaking effects for the reaction pn -> d pi0 at leading order in chiral perturbation theory. A new leading-order operator is included. From our analysis we extract δm_N^{str}, the strong contribution to the neutron-proton mass difference. The value obtained, δm_N^{str} = 1.5 \pm 0.8 (exp.) \pm 0.5 (th.) MeV, is consistent with the result based on the Cottingham sum rule. This agreement provides a non-trivial test of our current understanding of the chiral structure of QCD.

p-Wave pion production from nucleon-nucleon collisions

We investigate p-wave pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. In particular, we show that it is possible to describe simultaneously the p-wave amplitudes in the $pn\to ppπ^-$, $pp\to pnπ^+$, $pp\to dπ^+$ channels by adjusting a single low-energy constant accompanying the short-range operator which is available at this order. This study provides a non-trivial test of the applicability of chiral effective field theory to reactions of the type $NN\to NNπ$.

Predictions for the strangeness S=-3 and -4 baryon-baryon interactions in chiral effective field theory

The leading order strangeness S=-3 and -4 baryon-baryon interactions are analyzed within chiral effective field theory. The chiral potentials consist of contact terms without derivatives and of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges. Assuming SU(3) flavor symmetry those contact terms and the couplings of the pseudoscalar mesons to the baryons are related to the corresponding quantities of the S=-1 hyperon-nucleon channels. Specifically, the values of the pertinent five low-energy constants related to the contact terms are already fixed from our preceeding study of the Lambda-N and Sigma-N systems and thus genuine predictions for the Xi-Lambda, Xi-Sigma, and Xi-Xi interactions can be made. Strong attraction is found in some of the S=-3 and -4 channels, suggesting the possible existence of bound states.

The reaction ppbar -> Lambda_c-Lambda_cbar close to threshold

Predictions for the charm-production reaction antiproton-proton -> antiLambda_c-Lambda_c for energies near the threshold are presented. The calculations are performed in a meson-exchange framework in close analogy to our earlier study on antiproton-proton -> antiLambda-Lambda by connecting the two processes via SU(4) symmetry. The obtained antiLambda_c-Lambda_c production cross sections are in the order of 1 to 7 \mub, i.e. a factor of around 10 smaller than the corresponding cross sections for antiLambda-Lambda. However, they are 100 to 1000 times larger than predictions of other model calculations in the literature.

Strangeness S=-2 baryon-baryon interactions using chiral effective field theory

We derive the leading order strangeness S=-2 baryon-baryon interactions in chiral effective field theory. The potential consists of contact terms without derivatives and of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges. The contact terms and the couplings of the pseudoscalar mesons to the baryons are related via SU(3) flavor symmetry to the S=-1 hyperon-nucleon channels. We show that the chiral effective field theory predictions with natural values for the low-energy constants agree with the experimental information in the S=-2 sector.

Resonances and final state interactions in the reaction pp->pK^+Lambda

A study of the strangeness production reaction pp->pK^+Lambda for excess energies of epsilon \le 150 MeV, accessible at high-luminosity accelerator facilities like COSY, is presented. Methods to analyze the Dalitz plot distribution and angular spectra in the Jackson and helicity frames are worked out and suitable observables for extracting information on low lying resonances that couple to the K-Lambda system and for determining the Lambda-p effective-range parameters from the final state interaction are identified and discussed. Furthermore, the chances for identifying the reaction mechanism of strangeness production are investigated.

Parity nonconserving observables in thermal neutron capture on a proton

We calculate parity nonconserving observables in the processes where a neutron is captured on a proton at the threshold energy radiating a photon. Various potential models such as Paris, Bonn and Argonne $v18$ are used for the strong interactions, and the meson-exchange description is employed for the weak interactions between hadrons. The photon polarization $P_γ$ in the unpolarized neutron capture process and photon asymmetry $A_γ$ in the polarized neutron capture process are obtained in terms of the weak meson-nucleon coupling constants. $A_γ$ turns out to be basically insensitive to the employed strong interaction models and thus can be uniquely determined in terms of the weak coupling constants, but $P_γ$ depends significantly on the strong interaction models.

Influence of a Z+(1540) resonance on K+N scattering

The impact of a (I=0, J^P=1/2^+) Z^+(1540) resonance with a width of 5 MeV or more on the K+N (I=0) elastic cross section and on the P01 phase shift is examined within the KN meson-exchange model of the Juelich group. It is shown that the rather strong enhancement of the cross section caused by the presence of a Z^+ with the above properties is not compatible with the existing empirical information on KN scattering. Only a much narrower Z^+ state could be reconciled with the existing data -- or, alternatively, the Z^+ state must lie at an energy much closer to the KN threshold.

A meson exchange model for the YN interaction

We present a new model for the hyperon-nucleon (Lambda N, Sigma N) interaction, derived within the meson exchange framework. The model incorporates the standard one boson exchange contributions of the lowest pseudoscalar and vector meson multiplets with coupling constants fixed by SU(6) symmetry relations. In addition - as the main feature of the new model - the exchange of two correlated pions or kaons, both in the scalar-isoscalar (sigma) and vector-isovector (rho) channels, is included.

A two-pion exchange three-nucleon force based on a realistic pi-N interaction

The contribution of a $ππ$-exchange three-body force to the three-nucleon binding energy is calculated in terms of a $πN$ amplitude. The latter is based on a meson-theoretical model of $πN$ interaction developed by the Jülich group. Similar to a previous study based on simple phenomenological $πN$ potentials a very small effect of the resulting three-body force is found. Possible origins of the two-orders-of-magnitude descrepancy between the present result and the values obtained for the Tucson-Melbourne three-body force are investigated. Evidence is provided that this discrepancy is most likely due to strikingly different off-shell properties of the $πN$ amplitudes underlying the two approaches.

Role of the $Δ$ isobar in the reaction $NN \to NNπ$ near threshold

A model calculation for pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions is presented. Direct production, pion rescattering and contributions from pair diagrams are taken into account. The amplitudes for the elementary processes are based on well established microscopic models of nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon scattering. The $Δ(1232)$ is included explicitly and is found to play an important role even at energies close to production threshold. A good overall agreement with existing data from the pion production threshold up to the Delta resonance region is achieved.

The quark-meson coupling model for Lambda, Sigma and Xi hypernuclei

The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which has been successfully used to describe the properties of both infinite nuclear matter and finite nuclei, is applied to a systematic study of $Λ, Σ$ and $Ξ$ hypernuclei. Assumptions made in the present study are, (i) the (self-consistent) exchanged scalar, and vector, mesons couple only to the u and d quarks, and (ii) an SU(6) valence quark model for the bound nucleons and hyperon. The model automatically leads to a very weak spin-orbit interaction for the $Λ$ in a hypernucleus. Effects of the Pauli blocking at the quark level, particularly in the open, coupled, $ΣN - ΛN$ channel (strong conversion), is also taken into account in a phenomenological way.

Threshold meson production in nucleon-nucleon collisions

A brief overview on recent model calculations for near threshold pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions is given. Results from our own investigations of the reactions $pp \rightarrow ppπ^0$ and $pn \rightarrow dπ^0$ are presented. Direct production, heavy meson exchange and pion rescattering are taken into account. For the latter a T-matrix obtained from a microscopic model of the $πN$ interaction is employed. We obtain a significant contribution from rescattering, but not enough to describe the data for $pp \to ppπ^0$. The missing production rate can be provided by heavy meson exchanges. For the first time the effect of off--shell rescattering is investigated for the reaction $pn \rightarrow dπ^0$. Isoscalar rescattering in combination with isovector rescattering is able to describe the s-wave production data. We confirm that heavy meson exchanges are negligible in this reaction.
