On the definition of local spatial densities in hadrons

We show that the matrix element of a local operator between hadronic states gives rise to an unambiguous definition of the associated spatial density. As an explicit example, we consider the charge density of a spinless particle in the rest and moving frames and clarify its relationship to the electric form factor. Our results suggest that the interpretation of the spatial densities of local operators and their moments such as the mean square charge radius needs to be revised.

Strangeness ${S=-3}$ and ${-4}$ baryon-baryon interactions in chiral effective field theory

Studies of the baryon-baryon interaction involving hyperons within chiral effective field theory, so far performed up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the chiral expansion, have shown that for the strangeness $S=-1$ ($ΛN$, $ΣN$) and $S=-2$ ($ΛΛ$, $ΞN$) sectors a consistent and satisfactory description of the available scattering data and experimental constraints can be achieved based on the assumption of broken SU(3) flavor symmetry. We explore the possible extension of this approach at the NLO level to strangeness $S=-3$ and $S=-4$ baryon-baryon systems where empirical information is rather scarce. Specifically we address the question how measurements of two-body correlation functions in heavy-ion collisions and/or in high-energetic proton-proton collisions can help to constrain the interaction in channels like $ΞΛ$ or $ΞΞ$.

Chiral theory of $ρ$-meson gravitational form factors

The low-energy chiral effective field theory of vector mesons and Goldstone bosons in external gravitational field is considered. The energy-momentum tensor is obtained and the gravitational form factors of the $ρ$-meson are calculated up to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. This amounts to considering tree-level and one-loop order diagrams. The chiral expansion of the form factors at zero momentum transfer as well as of the slope parameters is worked out. Also, the long-range behaviour of the energy and internal force distributions is obtained and analysed.

Finite volume corrections to forward Compton scattering off the nucleon

We calculate the spin-averaged amplitude for doubly virtual forward Compton scattering off nucleons in the framework of manifestly Lorentz invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at complete one-loop order $O(p^4)$. The calculations are carried out both in the infinite and in a finite volume. The obtained results allow for a detailed estimation the finite-volume corrections to the amplitude which can be extracted on the lattice using the background field technique.

Hyperon-nucleon interaction within chiral effective field theory revisited

The $ΛN$ and $ΣN$ interactions are considered at next-to-leading order in SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Different options for the low-energy constants that determine the strength of the contact interactions are explored. Two variants are analysed in detail which yield equivalent results for $ΛN$ and $ΣN$ scattering observables but differ in the strength of the $ΛN \to ΣN$ transition potential. The influence of this difference on predictions for light hypernuclei and on the properties of the $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons in nuclear matter is investigated and discussed. The effect of the variation in the potential strength of the $ΛN$-$ΣN$ coupling (also called $Λ-Σ$ conversion) is found to be moderate for the considered $^3_Λ\rm H$ and $^4_Λ\rm He$ hypernuclei but sizable in case of the matter properties. Further, the size of three-body forces and their relation to different approaches to hypernuclear interactions is discussed.

Investigation of $J/ψ\to γ\, π^0 η(π^+π^-, π^0π^0)$ radiative decays including final-state interactions

We revisit the coupled channel $K\bar{K}$ interactions and dynamically generate the resonances $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ within both the isospin and the physical bases. The $f_0(980)-a_0(980)$ mixing effects are generated in the scattering amplitudes of the coupled channels with the physical basis, which exploits the important role of the $K\bar{K}$ channel in the dynamical nature of these resonances. With the scattering amplitudes obtained, we investigate the $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ contributions to the $J/ψ\to γηπ^0$, $J/ψ\to γπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\to γπ^0π^0$ radiative decays through the final-state interactions. We obtain the corresponding branching fractions $Br(J/ψ\to γa_0(980) \to γηπ^0) = (0.47\pm0.05) \times 10^{-7}$, $Br(J/ψ\to γf_0(980) \to γπ^+π^-) = 0.37 \times 10^{-7} - 1.98 \times 10^{-6}$, $Br(J/ψ\to γf_0(980) \to γπ^0π^0) = 0.18 \times 10^{-7} - 9.92 \times 10^{-7}$, and predict $Br(J/ψ\to γa_0(980)) = 1.72 \times 10^{-8} - 3.07\times 10^{-7}$ and $Br(J/ψ\to γf_0(980)) = 1.86 \times 10^{-8} - 1.89\times 10^{-5}$. These fractions are within the upper limits of the experimental measurements.

Towards high-order calculations of three-nucleon scattering in chiral effective field theory

We discuss the current status of chiral effective field theory in the three-nucleon sector and present selected results for nucleon-deuteron scattering observables based on semilocal momentum-space-regularized chiral two-nucleon potentials together with consistently regularized three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order. Using a Bayesian model for estimating truncation errors, the obtained results are found to provide a good description of the experimental data. We confirm our earlier findings that a high-precision description of nucleon-deuteron scattering data below pion production threshold will require the theory to be pushed to fifth chiral order. This conclusion is substantiated by an exploratory study of selected short-range contributions to the three-nucleon force at that order, which, as expected, are found to have significant effects on polarization observables at intermediate and high energies. We also outline the challenges that will need to be addressed in order to push the chiral expansion of three-nucleon scattering observables to higher orders.

On the pi pi continuum in the nucleon form factors and the proton radius puzzle

We present an improved determination of the $ππ$ continuum contribution to the isovector spectral functions of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. Our analysis includes the most up-to-date results for the $ππ\to\bar N N$ partial waves extracted from Roy-Steiner equations, consistent input for the pion vector form factor, and a thorough discussion of isospin-violating effects and uncertainty estimates. As an application, we consider the $ππ$ contribution to the isovector electric and magnetic radii by means of sum rules, which, in combination with the accurately known neutron electric radius, are found to slightly prefer a small proton charge radius.

Role of the total isospin 3/2 component in three-nucleon reactions

We discuss the role of the three-nucleon isospin T=3/2 amplitude in elastic neutron-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reaction. The contribution of this amplitude originates from charge-independence breaking of the nucleon-nucleon potential and is driven by the difference between neutron-neutron (proton-proton) and neutron-proton forces. We study the magnitude of that contribution to the elastic scattering and breakup observables, taking the locally regularized chiral N4LO nucleon-nucleon potential supplemented by the chiral N2LO three-nucleon force. For comparison we employ also the Av18 nucleon-nucleon potential combined with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. We find that the isospin T=3/2 component is important for the breakup reaction and the proper treatment of charge-independence breaking in this case requires the inclusion of the 1S0 state with isospin T=3/2. For neutron-deuteron elastic scattering the T=3/2 contributions are insignificant and charge-independence breaking can be accounted for by using the effective t-matrix generated with the so-called "2/3-1/3" rule.

The electromagnetic form factors of the $Λ$ in the timelike region

The reaction $e^+e^- \to \bar ΛΛ$ is investigated for energies close to the threshold. Specific emphasis is put on the role played by the interaction in the final $\bar ΛΛ$ system which is taken into account rigorously. For that interaction a variety of $\bar ΛΛ$ potential models is employed that have been constructed for the analysis of the reaction $\bar p p \to \bar ΛΛ$ in the past. The enhancement of the effective form factor for energies close to the $\bar ΛΛ$ threshold, seen in pertinent experiments, is reproduced. Predictions for the $Λ$ electromagnetic form factors $G_M$ and $G_E$ in the timelike region and for spin-dependent observables such as spin-correlation parameters are presented.

$J/ψ(η_c) N$ and $Υ(η_b) N$ cross sections

Inspired by the recent findings of the two $P_c^+$ states in the $J/ψp$ mass spectrum at LHCb, we investigate the elastic and inelastic cross sections of the $J/ψN$, $η_c N$, $ΥN$ and $η_b N$ channels within the constraints from heavy quark spin and flavour symmetry. The $\bar{D}^{(*)} Σ_c^{(*)}$ ($B^{(*)} Σ_b^{(*)}$) bound states predicted in earlier works should be accessible in elastic and/or inelastic processes of the $J/ψN$ and/or $η_c N$ ($ΥN$ and/or $η_b N$) interactions.

Eta photoproduction in a combined analysis of pion- and photon-induced reactions

The $ηN$ final state is isospin-selective and thus provides access to the spectrum of excited nucleons without being affected by excited $Δ$ states. To this end, the world database on eta photoproduction off the proton up to a center-of-mass energy of $E\sim 2.3$ GeV is analyzed, including data on differential cross sections, and single and double polarization observables. The resonance spectrum and its properties are determined in a combined analysis of eta and pion photoproduction off the proton together with the reactions $πN\to πN$, $ηN$, $KΛ$ and $KΣ$. For the analysis, the so-called Jülich coupled-channel framework is used, incorporating unitarity, analyticity, and effective three-body channels. Parameters tied to photoproduction and hadronic interactions are varied simultaneously. The influence of recent MAMI $T$ and $F$ asymmetry data on the eta photoproduction amplitude is discussed in detail.

Few-nucleon systems with state-of-the-art chiral nucleon-nucleon forces

We apply improved nucleon-nucleon potentials up to fifth order in chiral effective field theory, along with a new analysis of the theoretical truncation errors, to study nucleon-deuteron (Nd) scattering and selected low-energy observables in 3H, 4He, and 6Li. Calculations beyond second order differ from experiment well outside the range of quantified uncertainties, providing truly unambiguous evidence for missing three-nucleon forces within the employed framework. The sizes of the required three-nucleon force contributions agree well with expectations based on Weinberg's power counting. We identify the energy range in elastic Nd scattering best suited to study three-nucleon force effects and estimate the achievable accuracy of theoretical predictions for various observables.

Jacobi no-core shell model for p-shell nuclei

We introduce an algorithm to obtain coefficients of fractional parentage for light $p$-shell nuclei. The coefficients enable to use Jacobi coordinates in no-core shell model calculations separating off the center-of-mass motion. Fully antisymmetrized basis states are given together with recoupling coefficients that allow one to apply two- and three-nucleon operators. As an example, we study the dependence on the harmonic oscillator frequency of $^3$H, $^4$He, $^6$He, $^6$Li and $^7$Li and extract their binding and excitation energies. The coefficients will be made openly accessible as HDF5 data files.

New structures in the proton-antiproton system

In the most recent measurements of the reaction $e^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p}$ by the BABAR collaboration, new structures have been found with unknown origin. We examine a possible relation of the most distinct peak to the recently observed $Φ(2170)$. Alternatively, we analyse possible explanations due to the nucleon$\,\barΔ$ and $Δ\barΔ$ thresholds. The latter could explain a periodicity found in the data.

Photocouplings at the Pole from Pion Photoproduction

The reactions $γp\toπ^0 p$ and $γp\toπ^+ n$ are analyzed in a semi-phenomenological approach up to $E\sim2.3$ GeV. Fits to differential cross section and single and double polarization observables are performed. A good overall reproduction of the available photoproduction data is achieved. The Jülich2012 dynamical coupled-channel model -which describes elastic $πN$ scattering and the world data base of the reactions $πN\toηN$, $KΛ$, and $KΣ$ at the same time - is employed as the hadronic interaction in the final state. The framework guarantees analyticity and, thus, allows for a reliable extraction of resonance parameters in terms of poles and residues. In particular, the photocouplings at the pole can be extracted and are presented.

Improved chiral nucleon-nucleon potential up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order

We present improved nucleon-nucleon potentials derived in chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. We argue that the nonlocal momentum-space regulator employed in the two-nucleon potentials of Refs. [E. Epelbaum, W. Gloeckle, U.-G. Meißner, Nucl. Phys. A747 (2005) 362], [D.R. Entem, R. Machleidt, Phys. Rev. C68 (2003) 041001] is not the most efficient choice, in particular since it affects the long-range part of the interaction. We are able to significantly reduce finite-cutoff artefacts by using an appropriate regularization in coordinate space which maintains the analytic structure of the amplitude. The new potentials do not require the additional spectral function regularization employed in Ref. [E. Epelbaum, W. Gloeckle, U.-G. Meißner, Nucl. Phys. A747 (2005) 362] to cut off the short-range components of the two-pion exchange and make use of the low-energy constants c_i and d_i determined from pion-nucleon scattering without any fine tuning. We discuss in detail the construction of the new potentials and convergence of the chiral expansion for two-nucleon observables. We also introduce a new procedure for estimating the theoretical uncertainty from the truncation of the chiral expansion that replaces previous reliance on cutoff variation.

Precision nucleon-nucleon potential at fifth order in the chiral expansion

We present a nucleon-nucleon potential at fifth order in chiral effective field theory. We find a substantial improvement in the description of nucleon-nucleon phase shifts as compared to the fourth-order results of Ref. [E. Epelbaum, H. Krebs, U.-G. Meißner, arXiv:1412.0142 [nucl-th]]. This provides clear evidence of the corresponding two-pion exchange contributions with all low-energy constants being determined from pion-nucleon scattering. The fifth-order corrections to nucleon-nucleon observables appear to be of a natural size which confirms the good convergence of the chiral expansion for nuclear forces. Furthermore, the obtained results provide strong support for the novel way of quantifying the theoretical uncertainty due to the truncation of the chiral expansion proposed in Ref. [E. Epelbaum, H. Krebs, U.-G. Meißner, arXiv:1412.0142 [nucl-th]]. Our work opens up new perspectives for precision ab initio calculations in few- and many-nucleon systems and is especially relevant for ongoing efforts towards a quantitative understanding the structure of the three-nucleon force in the framework of chiral effective field theory.

Properties of effective massive Yang-Mills theory in the limit of vanishing vector boson mass

Two-loop corrections to the pole mass of the vector boson and the pole masses and the magnetic moments of fermions are calculated in the framework of an effective field theory of massive Yang-Mills fields interacting with fermions. It is shown that the limit of vanishing vector boson mass is finite for all these quantities. Implications of the obtained results are discussed.

The electromagnetic form factors of the proton in the timelike region

The reactions ppbar -> e+e- and e+e- -> ppbar are analyzed in the near-threshold region. Specific emphasis is put on the role played by the interaction in the initial- or final antinucleon-nucleon state which is taken into account rigorously. For that purpose a recently published NNbar potential derived within chiral effective field theory and fitted to results of a new partial-wave analysis of ppbar scattering data is employed. Our results provide strong support for the conjecture that the pronounced energy dependence of the e+e- <-> ppbar cross section, seen in pertinent experiments, is primarily due to the ppbar interaction. Predictions for the proton electromagnetic form factors G_E and G_M in the timelike region, close to the NNbar threshold, and for spin-dependent observables are presented. The steep rise of the effective form factor for energies close to the ppbar threshold is explained solely in terms of the ppbar interaction. The corresponding experimental information is quantitatively described by our calculation.

Coupled-channel dynamics in the reactions piN --> piN, etaN, KLambda, KSigma

Elastic piN scattering and the world data of the family of reactions pi^- p --> eta n, K^0 Lambda$, K^0 Sigma^0, K^+ Sigma^-, and pi^+ p --> K^+ Sigma^+ are described simultaneously in an analytic, unitary, coupled-channel approach. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate both the t- and the u- channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. Partial-wave amplitudes are determined and the resonance content is extracted from the analytic continuation, including resonance positions and branching ratios, and possible sources of uncertainties are discussed. The results provide the final-state interactions for the ongoing analysis of photo- and electroproduction data.

Dispersive analysis for $η\to γγ^*$

A dispersion integral is derived that connects data on $η\to π^+π^-γ$ to the $η\to γγ^*$ transition form factor. A detailed analysis of the uncertainties is provided. We find for the slope of the $η$ transition form factor at the origin $b_η= (2.05 {}^{+0.22}_{-0.10})\, {\rm GeV}^{-2}$. Using an additional, plausible assumption, one finds for the corresponding slope of the $η'$ transition form factor, $b_{η'} = (1.58 {}^{+0.15}_{-0.08})\, {\rm GeV}^{-2}$. Both values are consistent with all recent data, but differ from some previous theoretical analyses.

Electromagnetic Structure of the Z_c(3900)

The observation of the exotic quarkonium state Z_c(3900) by the BESIII and Belle collaborations supports the concept of hadronic molecules. Charmonium states interpreted as such molecules would be bound states of heavy particles with small binding energies. This motivates their description using an effective theory with contact interactions. In particular, we focus on the electromagnetic structure of the charged state Z_c(3900). Using first experimental results concerning spin and parity, we interpret it as an S-wave molecule and calculate the form factors as well as charge and magnetic radii up to next-to-leading order. We also present first numerical estimations of some of these observables at leading order.

Hyperon-nucleon interaction at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory

Results for the Lambda N and Sigma N interactions obtained at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory are reported. At the order considered there are contributions from one- and two-pseudoscalar-meson exchange diagrams and from four-baryon contact terms without and with two derivatives. SU(3) flavor symmetry is imposed for constructing the hyperon-nucleon interaction while the explicit SU(3) symmetry breaking by the physical masses of the pseudoscalar mesons (pi, K, eta) is taken into account. An excellent description of the hyperon-nucleon system can be achieved at next-to-leading order. It is on the same level of quality as the one obtained by the most advanced phenomenological hyperon-nucleon interaction models.

On the renormalization of the one-pion exchange potential and the consistency of Weinberg's power counting

Nogga, Timmermans and van Kolck recently argued that Weinberg's power counting in the few-nucleon sector is inconsistent and requires modifications. Their argument is based on the observed cutoff dependence of the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude calculated by solving the Lippmann-Schwinger equation with the regularized one-pion exchange potential and the cutoff Lambda varied in the range Lambda = 2...20 fm^(-1). In this paper we discuss the role the cutoff plays in the application of chiral effective field theory to the two-nucleon system and study carefully the cutoff-dependence of phase shifts and observables based on the one-pion exchange potential. We show that (i) there is no need to use the momentum-space cutoff larger than Lambda ~ 3 fm^(-1); (ii) the neutron-proton low-energy data show no evidence for an inconsistency of Weinberg's power counting if one uses Lambda ~ 3 fm^{-1}.

Quark mass dependence of the X(3872) binding energy

We explore the quark-mass dependence of the pole position of the X(3872) state within the molecular picture. The calculations are performed within the framework of a nonrelativistic Faddeev-type three-body equation for the $D\bar{D}π$ system in the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ channel. The $πD$ interaction is parametrised via a $D^*$ pole, and a three-body force is included to render the equations well defined. Its strength is adjusted such that the X(3872) appears as a $D\bar{D}^*$ bound state 0.5 MeV below the neutral threshold. We find that the trajectory of the X(3872) depends strongly on the assumed quark-mass dependence of the short-range interactions which can be determined in future lattice QCD calculations. At the same time we are able to provide nontrivial information on the chiral extrapolation in the $X$ channel.

Search for a dark photon in the $π^0 \to e^+e^-γ$ decay

The presently world largest data sample of pi0 --> gamma e+e- decays containing nearly 5E5 events was collected using the WASA detector at COSY. A search for a dark photon U produced in the pi0 --> gamma U --> gamma e+e- decay from the pp-->ppπ^0 reaction was carried out. An upper limit on the square of the U-gamma mixing strength parameter epsilon^2 of 5e-6 at 90% CL was obtained for the mass range 20 MeV <M_U< 100 MeV. This result together with other recent experimental limits significantly reduces the M_U vs. ε^2 parameter space preferred by the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

The magnetic moment of the ρ-meson

The magnetic moment of the ρ-meson is calculated in the framework of a low-energy effective field theory of the strong interactions. We find that the complex-valued strong interaction corrections to the gyromagnetic ratio are small leading to a value close to the real leading tree level result, g_ρ= 2. This is in a reasonably good agreement with the available lattice QCD calculations for this quantity.

Varying the light quark mass: impact on the nuclear force and Big Bang nucleosynthesis

The quark mass dependences of light element binding energies and nuclear scattering lengths are derived using chiral perturbation theory in combination with non-perturbative methods. In particular, we present new, improved values for the quark mass dependence of meson resonances that enter the nuclear force. A detailed analysis of the theoretical uncertainties arising in this determination is presented. As an application we derive from a comparison of observed and calculated primordial deuterium and helium abundances a stringent limit on the variation of the light quark mass, $δm_q/m_q = 0.02 \pm 0.04$. Inclusion of the neutron lifetime modification under the assumption of a variation of the Higgs vacuum expectation value that translates into changing quark, electron, and weak gauge boson masses, leads to a stronger limit, $|δm_q/m_q| < 0.009$.

Finite volume effects in pion-kaon scattering and reconstruction of the kappa(800) resonance

Simulating the kappa(800) on the lattice is a challenging task that starts to become feasible due to the rapid progress in recent-years lattice QCD calculations. As the resonance is broad, special attention to finite-volume effects has to be paid, because no sharp resonance signal as from avoided level crossing can be expected. In the present article, we investigate the finite volume effects in the framework of unitarized chiral perturbation theory using next-to-leading order terms. After a fit to meson-meson partial wave data, lattice levels for piK scattering are predicted. In addition, levels are shown for the quantum numbers in which the sigma(600), f_0(980), a_0(980), phi(1020), K*(892), and rho(770) appear, as well as the repulsive channels. Methods to extract the kappa(800) signal from the lattice spectrum are presented. Using pseudo-data, we estimate the precision that lattice data should have to allow for a clear-cut extraction of this resonance. To put the results into context, in particular the required high precision on the lattice data, the sigma(600), the P-wave resonances K*(892) and rho(770), and the repulsive piK, pipi phases are analyzed as well.

Improving the Hadron Physics of Non-Standard-Model Decays: Example Bounds on R-parity Violation

Using the example of selected decays driven by R-parity-violating supersymmetric operators, we demonstrate how strong final-state interactions can be controlled quantitatively with high precision, thus allowing for a more accurate extraction of effective parameters from data. In our examples we focus on the lepton-flavor-violating decays tau --> mu pi+ pi-. In R-parity violation these can arise due to the product of two couplings. We find bounds that are an order of magnitude stronger than previous ones.

New insights into the spin structure of the nucleon

We analyze the low-energy spin structure of the nucleon in a covariant effective field theory with explicit spin-3/2 degrees of freedom to third order in the small scale expansion. Using the available data on the strong and electromagnetic width of the Delta-resonance, we give parameter-free predictions for various spin-polarizabilities and moments of spin structure functions. We find an improved description of the nucleon spin structure at finite photon virtualities for some observables and point out the necessity of a fourth order calculation.

Scalar mesons moving in a finite volume and the role of partial wave mixing

Phase shifts and resonance parameters can be obtained from finite-volume lattice spectra for interacting pairs of particles, moving with nonzero total momentum. We present a simple derivation of the method that is subsequently applied to obtain the pi pi and pi K phase shifts in the sectors with total isospin I=0 and I=1/2, respectively. Considering different total momenta, one obtains extra data points for a given volume that allow for a very efficient extraction of the resonance parameters in the infinite-volume limit. Corrections due to the mixing of partial waves are provided. We expect that our results will help to optimize the strategies in lattice simulations, which aim at an accurate determination of the scattering and resonance properties.

The electric dipole moment of the deuteron from the QCD $θ$-term

The two-nucleon contributions to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron, induced by the QCD $θ$-term, are calculated in the framework of effective field theory up-to-and-including next-to-next-to-leading order. In particular we find for the difference of the deuteron EDM and the sum of proton and neutron EDM induced by the QCD $θ$-term a value of $(-5.4\pm 3.9)\,\barθ\times 10^{-4}\, e$ fm. The by far dominant uncertainty comes from the CP- and isospin-violating $πNN$ coupling constant.

Dynamical coupled-channel approaches on a momentum lattice

Dynamical coupled-channel approaches are a widely used tool in hadronic physics that allow to analyze different reactions and partial waves in a consistent way. In such approaches the basic interactions are derived within an effective Lagrangian framework and the resulting pseudo-potentials are then unitarized in a coupled-channel scattering equation. We propose a scheme that allows for a solution of the arising integral equation in discretized momentum space for periodic as well as twisted boundary conditions. This permits to study finite size effects as they appear in lattice QCD simulations. The new formalism, at this stage with a restriction to S-waves, is applied to coupled-channel models for the sigma(600), f0(980), and a0(980) mesons, and also for the Lambda(1405) baryon. Lattice spectra are predicted.

Dynamical coupled-channels model study of pion photoproduction

The photoproduction of pion off nucleon is investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels approach based on the Juelich pi-N model, which has been quite successful in the description of pi-N to pi-N scattering for center-of-mass energies up to 1.9 GeV. The full pion photoproduction amplitude is constructed to satisfy the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity and hence, it is fully gauge invariant. The calculated differential cross sections and photon spin asymmetries up to 1.65 GeV center-of-mass energy for the reactions gamma p to pi^+ n, gamma p to pi^0 p and gamma n to pi^- p are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Exclusive Measurement of the eta --> pi+ pi- gamma Decay

An exclusive measurement of the decay eta --> pi+ pi- gamma has been performed at the WASA facility at COSY. The eta mesons were produced in the fusion reaction pd --> 3He X at a proton beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c. Efficiency corrected differential distributions have been extracted based on 13340\pm140 events after background subtraction. The measured pion angular distribution is consistent with a relative p-wave of the two-pion system, whereas the measured photon energy spectrum was found at variance with the simplest gauge invariant matrix element of eta --> pi+ pi- gamma. Exotic bound states of two baryons in light of chiral effective field theory

Baryon-baryon bound states in the strangeness S=-2, S=-3, and S=-4 sectors are considered. In particular, the dependence of the corresponding binding energies on the quark mass (or equivalently the pion mass) is explored in the framework of chiral effective field theory, in order to connect with current lattice QCD calculations. For a bound state in the Xi-Xi 1S0 channel, predicted by our leading-order effective field theory interaction, binding energies are inferred that are roughly in line with a recent lattice QCD result at meson and baryon masses that correspond to those in the lattice simulation. With regard to the so-called H-dibaryon it is shown that the SU(3) breaking effects induced by the differences of the pertinent two-baryon thresholds (Lambda-Lambda, Xi-N, Sigma-Sigma) have a very pronounced impact on its binding energy. A bound H-dibaryon as found in two lattice calculations could be shifted above the Lambda-Lambda or even above the Xi-N threshold for physical masses of the involved baryons.

Based on data from KN scattering only, we predict the kaon-deuteron scattering length A_Kd= (-1.46 + i 1.08) fm, with an estimated uncertainty of about 25% in both the real and the imaginary part.

Model-independent approach to eta -> pi+ pi- gamma and eta' -> pi+ pi- gamma

We present a new, model-independent method to analyze radiative decays of mesons to a vector, isovector pair of pions of invariant mass square below the first significant pion-pion threshold in the vector channel. It is based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and dispersion theory. This allows for a controlled inclusion of resonance physics without the necessity to involve vector meson dominance explicitly. As an example, the method is applied to an analysis of the reactions eta -> pi+ pi- gamma and eta'->pi+ pi- gamma.

Pion photoproduction in a dynamical coupled-channels model

The charged and neutral pion photoproduction reactions are investigated in a dynamical coupled-channels approach based on the formulation of Haberzettl, Huang, and Nakayama [Phys. Rev. C 83, 065502 (2011)]. The hadronic final-state interaction is provided by the Juelich pi-N model, which includes the channels pi-N and eta-N comprising stable hadrons as well as the effective pi-pi-N channels pi-Delta, sigma-N, and rho-N. This hadronic model has been quite successful in describing pi-N to pi-N scattering for center-of-mass energies up to 1.9 GeV. By construction, the full pion photoproduction current satisfies the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity and thus is gauge invariant as a matter of course. The calculated differential cross sections and photon spin asymmetries up to 1.65 GeV center-of-mass energy for the reactions gamma p to pi+ n, gamma p to pi0 p, gamma n to pi- p and gamma n to pi0 n are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Relevance of complex branch points for partial wave analysis

A central issue in hadron spectroscopy is to deduce --- and interpret --- resonance parameters, namely pole positions and residues, from experimental data, for those are the quantities to be compared to lattice QCD or model calculations. However, not every structure in the observables derives from a resonance pole: the origin might as well be branch points, either located on the real axis (when a new channel comprised of stable particles opens) or in the complex plane (when at least one of the intermediate particles is unstable). In this paper we demonstrate first the existence of such branch points in the complex plane and then show on the example of the piN P11 partial wave that it is not possible to distinguish the structures induced by the latter from a true pole signal based on elastic data alone.

Two-nucleon electromagnetic current in chiral effective field theory: one-pion exchange and short-range contributions

We derive the leading one-loop contribution to the one-pion exchange and short-range two-nucleon electromagnetic current operator in the framework of chiral effective field theory. The derivation is carried out using the method of unitary transformation. Explicit results for the current and charge densities are given in momentum and coordinate space.

Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory in a finite volume: scalar meson sector

We develop a scheme for the extraction of the properties of the scalar mesons f0(600), f0(980), and a0(980) from lattice QCD data. This scheme is based on a two-channel chiral unitary approach with fully relativistic propagators in a finite volume. In order to discuss the feasibility of finding the mass and width of the scalar resonances, we analyze synthetic lattice data with a fixed error assigned, and show that the framework can be indeed used for an accurate determination of resonance pole positions in the multi-channel scattering.

When hadrons become unstable: a novel type of non-analyticity in chiral extrapolations

Hadron masses show a specific dependence on the quark masses. Therefore, the variation of these masses can cause a resonance in a hadronic scattering amplitude to become a bound state. Consequently, the amplitude exhibits a non-analytic behavior at this transition. Crossed amplitudes, where the resonance can be exchanged in the t-channel, can be shown to exhibit the same phenomenon by s-->t analytic continuation. This entails possible kinks in lattice quark mass extrapolations needed to compute hadronic observables.

Analysis of recent eta photoproduction data

Recent data on eta-meson photoproduction off a proton target in the energy range 2 < sqrt{s} < 3 GeV are analyzed with regard to their overall consistency. Results from the ELSA and CLAS measurements are compared with predictions of a Regge model whose reaction amplitude was fixed via a global fit to pre-2000 measurements of differential cross sections and polarization observables for gamma p -> eta p at higher energies. We find that all recent experimental results on differential cross sections for eta-meson photoproduction are in good agreement with each other, except for the CLAS data from 2009. However, the latter can be made consistent with the other data at the expense of introducing an energy-dependent renormalization factor. We point out that there indications in the data for a possible excitation of baryon resonances with masses around 2.1 and 2.4 GeV.

New insights into the neutron electric dipole moment

We analyze the CP-violating electric dipole form factor of the nucleon in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We give a new upper bound on the vacuum angle, |θ_0| \lesssim 2.5 \cdot 10^{-10}. The quark mass dependence of the electric dipole moment is discussed and compared to lattice QCD data. We also perform the matching between its representations in the three- and two-flavor theories.

Non-perturbative methods for a chiral effective field theory of finite density nuclear systems

Recently we have developed a novel chiral power counting scheme for an effective field theory of nuclear matter with nucleons and pions as degrees of freedom [1]. It allows for a systematic expansion taking into account both local as well as pion-mediated multi-nucleon interactions. We apply this power counting in the present study to the evaluation of the pion self-energy and the energy density in nuclear and neutron matter at next-to-leading order. To implement this power counting in actual calculations we develop here a non-perturbative method based on Unitary Chiral Perturbation Theory for performing the required resummations. We show explicitly that the contributions to the pion self-energy with in-medium nucleon-nucleon interactions to this order cancel. The main trends for the energy density of symmetric nuclear and neutron matter are already reproduced at next-to-leading order. In addition, an accurate description of the neutron matter equation of state, as compared with sophisticated many-body calculations, is obtained by varying only slightly a subtraction constant around its expected value. The case of symmetric nuclear matter requires the introduction of an additional fine-tuned subtraction constant, parameterizing the effects from higher order contributions. With that, the empirical saturation point and the nuclear matter incompressiblity are well reproduced while the energy per nucleon as a function of density closely agrees with sophisticated calculations in the literature.

Primakoff effect in eta-photoproduction off protons

We analyse data on forward eta-meson photoproduction off a proton target and extract the eta to gamma gamma decay width utilizing the Primakoff effect. The hadronic amplitude that enters into our analysis is strongly constrained because it is fixed from a global fit to available gamma p to p eta data for differential cross sections and polarizations. We compare our results with present information on the two-photon eta-decay from the literature. We provide predictions for future PrimEx experiments at Jefferson Laboratory in order to motivate further studies.

Proton-proton scattering above 3 GeV/c

A large set of data on proton-proton differential cross sections, analyzing powers and the double polarization parameter A_NN is analyzed employing the Regge formalism. We find that the data available at proton beam momenta from 3 GeV/c to 50 GeV/c exhibit features that are very well in line with the general characteristics of Regge phenomenology and can be described with a model that includes the rho, omega, f_2, and a_2 trajectories and single Pomeron exchange. Additional data, specifically for spin-dependent observables at forward angles, would be very helpful for testing and refining our Regge model.

Saturation of nuclear matter in effective field theory

The two- and three-nucleon interaction derived in chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order is used to obtain the binding energy of nuclear matter. Saturation is found at a binding energy per particle E/A = -16.2 \pm 0.3 MeV and a Fermi momentum k_F = 1.30 \pm 0.03 fm^{-1}, where the uncertainty is due to the cut-off dependence of the two-nucleon interaction. The sensitivity of these values to the three-nucleon force is also studied.

The chiral quark condensate and pion decay constant in nuclear matter at next-to-leading order

Making use of the recently developed chiral power counting for the physics of nuclear matter [1,2], we evaluate the in-medium chiral quark condensate up to next-to-leading order for both symmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter. Our calculation includes the full in-medium iteration of the leading order local and one-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon interactions. Interestingly, we find a cancellation between the contributions stemming from the quark mass dependence of the nucleon mass appearing in the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interactions. Only the contributions originating from the explicit quark mass dependence of the pion mass survive. This cancellation is the reason of previous observations concerning the dominant role of the long-range pion contributions and the suppression of short-range nucleon-nucleon interactions. We find that the linear density contribution to the in-medium chiral quark condensate is only slightly modified for pure neutron matter by the nucleon-nucleon interactions. For symmetric nuclear matter the in-medium corrections are larger, although smaller compared to other approaches due to the full iteration of the lowest order nucleon-nucleon tree-level amplitudes. Our calculation satisfies the Hellmann-Feynman theorem to the order worked out. Also we address the problem of calculating the leading in-medium corrections to the pion decay constant. We find that there are no extra in-medium corrections that violate the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation up to next-to-leading order.

The reaction pi+ p --> K+ Sigma+ in a unitary coupled-channels model

Elastic pi N scattering and the reaction pi+ p --> K+ Sigma+ are described simultaneously in a unitary coupled-channels approach which respects analyticity. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate the t- and u-channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. The pole structure of the amplitudes is extracted from the analytic continuation.

Backward pion photoproduction

We present a systematic analysis of backward pion photoproduction for the reactions gamma p -> pi0 p and gamma p -> pi+ n. Regge phenomenology is applied at invariant collision energies above 3 GeV in order to fix the reaction amplitude. A comparision with older data on pi0- and pi+ photoproduction at theta = 180 degrees indicates that the high-energy limit as given by the Regge calculation could be reached possibly at energies of around sqrt{s} = 3 GeV. In the energy region of sqrt{s} < 2.5 GeV, covered by the new measurements of gamma p -> pi0 p differential cross sections at large angles at ELSA, JLab, and LEPS, we see no clear signal for a convergence towards the Regge results. The baryon trajectories obtained in our analysis are in good agreement with those given by the spectrum of excited baryons.

Extraction of the strong neutron-proton mass difference from the charge symmetry breaking in pn-->d pi0

We perform a complete calculation of charge symmetry breaking effects for the reaction pn -> d pi0 at leading order in chiral perturbation theory. A new leading-order operator is included. From our analysis we extract δm_N^{str}, the strong contribution to the neutron-proton mass difference. The value obtained, δm_N^{str} = 1.5 \pm 0.8 (exp.) \pm 0.5 (th.) MeV, is consistent with the result based on the Cottingham sum rule. This agreement provides a non-trivial test of our current understanding of the chiral structure of QCD.

Predictions for the strangeness S=-3 and -4 baryon-baryon interactions in chiral effective field theory

The leading order strangeness S=-3 and -4 baryon-baryon interactions are analyzed within chiral effective field theory. The chiral potentials consist of contact terms without derivatives and of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges. Assuming SU(3) flavor symmetry those contact terms and the couplings of the pseudoscalar mesons to the baryons are related to the corresponding quantities of the S=-1 hyperon-nucleon channels. Specifically, the values of the pertinent five low-energy constants related to the contact terms are already fixed from our preceeding study of the Lambda-N and Sigma-N systems and thus genuine predictions for the Xi-Lambda, Xi-Sigma, and Xi-Xi interactions can be made. Strong attraction is found in some of the S=-3 and -4 channels, suggesting the possible existence of bound states.

Strangeness S=-2 baryon-baryon interactions using chiral effective field theory

We derive the leading order strangeness S=-2 baryon-baryon interactions in chiral effective field theory. The potential consists of contact terms without derivatives and of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges. The contact terms and the couplings of the pseudoscalar mesons to the baryons are related via SU(3) flavor symmetry to the S=-1 hyperon-nucleon channels. We show that the chiral effective field theory predictions with natural values for the low-energy constants agree with the experimental information in the S=-2 sector.

How to measure the parity of the $Θ^+$ in $\vec p\vec p$ collisions

Triggered by a recent paper by Thomas, Hicks and Hosaka, we investigate which observables can be used to determine the parity of the $Θ^+$ from the reaction $\vec p\vec p \to Σ^+Θ^+$ near its production threshold. In particular, we show that the sign of the spin correlation coefficient $A_{xx}$ for small excess energies yields the negative of the parity of the $Θ^+$. The argument relies solely on the Pauli principle and parity conservation and is therefore model--independent.

On the correlation between the binding energies of the triton and the alpha-particle

We consider the correlation between the binding energies of the triton and the alpha-particle which is empirically observed in calculations employing different phenomenological nucleon-nucleon interactions. Using an effective quantum mechanics approach for short-range interactions with large scattering length |a| >> l, where l is the natural low-energy length scale, we construct the effective interaction potential at leading order in l/|a|. In order to renormalize the four-nucleon system, it is sufficient to include a SU(4)-symmetric one-parameter three-nucleon interaction in addition to the S-wave nucleon-nucleon interactions. The absence of a four-nucleon force at this order explains the empirically observed correlation between the binding energies of the triton and the alpha-particle. We calculate this correlation and obtain a prediction for the alpha-particle binding energy. Corrections to our results are suppressed by l/|a|.

Radiative neutron beta-decay in effective field theory

We consider radiative β--decay of the neutron in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, with an extension including explicit Δdegrees of freedom. We compute the photon energy spectrum as well as the photon polarization; both observables are dominated by the electron bremsstrahlung contribution. Nucleon-structure effects not encoded in the weak coupling constants g_A and g_V are determined at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, and enter at the {\cal O}(0.5%)-level, making a sensitive test of the Dirac structure of the weak currents possible.

Universal Properties of the Four-Boson System in Two Dimensions

We consider the nonrelativistic four-boson system in two dimensions interacting via a short-range attractive potential. For a weakly attractive potential with one shallow two-body bound state with binding energy B_2, the binding energies B_N of shallow N-body bound states are universal and thus do not depend on the details of the interaction potential. We compute the four-body binding energies in an effective quantum mechanics approach. There are exactly two bound states: the ground state with B_4^(0)=197.3(1)B_2 and one excited state with B_4^(1)=25.5(1)B_2. We compare our results to recent predictions for N-body bound states with large N>>1.
