Electric dipole moments of baryons with bottom quarks

Triggered by experimental prospects to measure electromagnetic dipole moments of baryons containing a bottom quark, we calculate the CP-odd electric dipole moments (EDMs) of spin-1/2 single-bottom baryons. We consider CP-violating dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory that involve bottom quarks, and apply heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to compute the EDMs of several baryons. We discuss the expected size of the EDMs for beyond-the-Standard Model physics appearing at the TeV scale.

Insights into $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ from dipion transitions from $Υ(10860)$

The dipion transitions $Υ(10860)\toπ^+π^-Υ(nS)$ ($n=1,2,3$) are studied in the framework of a unitary and analytic coupled-channel formalism previously developed for analysing experimental data on the bottomoniumlike states $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ [Phys. Rev. D 98, 074023 (2018)] and predicting the properties of their spin partners [Phys. Rev. D 99, 094013 (2019)]. In this work we use a relatively simple but realistic version of this approach, where the scattering and production amplitudes are constructed employing only short-ranged interactions between the open- and hidden-flavour channels consistent with the constraints from heavy quark spin symmetry, for an extended analysis of the experimental line shapes. In particular, the transitions from the $Υ(10860)$ to the final states $ππh_b(mP)$ ($m=1,2$) and $πB^{(*)}\bar B^* $ already studied before, are now augmented by the $Υ(10860)\toπ^+π^-Υ(nS)$ final states ($n=1,2,3$). This is achieved by employing dispersion theory to account for the final state interaction of the $ππ$ subsystem including its coupling to the $K\bar K$ channel. Fits to the two-dimensional Dalitz plots for the $π^+π^-Υ$ final states were performed. Two real subtraction constants are adjusted to achieve the best description of the Dalitz plot for each $Υ(nS)$ $(n=1,2,3)$ while all the parameters related to the properties of the $Z_b$'s are kept fixed from the previous study. A good overall description of the data for all $Υ(10860)\toπ^+π^-Υ(nS)$ channels achieved in this work provides additional strong support for the molecular interpretation of the $Z_b$ states.

Is $Z_{cs}(3982)$ a molecular partner of $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4020)$ states?

We perform an effective-field-theory-based coupled-channel analysis of the recent BES III data on the $e^+e^-$ annihilation into the final state $K^+(D_s^-D^{*0}+D_s^{*-}D^0)$ in a wide energy range and extract the poles responsible for the formation of the $Z_{cs}(3982)$. We identify two scenarios which provide a similar description of the experimental mass distributions but result in utterly different predictions for the spin partners of the $Z_{cs}(3982)$: although both scenarios are consistent with the $Z_{cs}$ as a $SU(3)$ partner of the $Z_c(3900)$, the $Z_c(4020)$ appears naturally as a spin partner of these states only in one of them (fit 1) while in the other (fit 2) its nature has to be different. Also, the $Z_{cs}(3982)$ has a $J^{P}=1^+$ spin partner near the $\bar D_s^* D^*$ threshold in fit 1, while no such state exists in fit 2. We predict the $\bar{D}_s^*D^*$ invariant mass distribution in the $J^{P}=1^+$ channel for the reaction $e^+e^-\to K^+D_s^{*-}D^{*0}$ and argue that this line shape can be used to distinguish between the two scenarios once data in this channel are available.

A model-independent analysis of final-state interactions in \bar B_{d/s}^0 --> J/psi pi pi

Exploiting $B$-meson decays for Standard Model tests and beyond requires a precise understanding of the strong final-state interactions that can be provided model-independently by means of dispersion theory. This formalism allows one to deduce the universal pion-pion final-state interactions from the accurately known $ππ$ phase shifts and, in the scalar sector, a coupled-channel treatment with the kaon-antikaon system. In this work an analysis of the decays $\bar B_d^0 \to J/ψπ^+π^-$ and $\bar B_s^0 \to J/ψπ^+π^-$ is presented. We find very good agreement with the data up to 1.05 GeV with a number of parameters reduced significantly compared to a phenomenological analysis. In addition, the phases of the amplitudes are correct by construction, a crucial feature when it comes to studies of $CP$ violation in heavy-meson decays.

Heavy-quark spin symmetry partners of the $X(3872)$ revisited

We revisit the consequences of the heavy-quark spin symmetry for the possible spin partners of the $X(3872)$. We confirm that, if the $X(3872)$ were a $D\bar{D}^*$ molecular state with the quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{++}$, then in the strict heavy-quark limit there should exist three more hadronic molecules degenerate with the $X(3872)$, with the quantum numbers $0^{++}$, $1^{+-}$, and $2^{++}$ in line with previous results reported in the literature. We demonstrate that this result is robust with respect to the inclusion of the one-pion exchange interaction between the $D$ mesons. However, this is true only if all relevant partial waves as well as particle channels which are coupled via the pion-exchange potential are taken into account. Otherwise, the heavy-quark symmetry is destroyed even in the heavy-quark limit. Finally, we solve the coupled-channel problem in the $2^{++}$ channel with nonperturbative pions beyond the heavy-quark limit and, contrary to the findings of previous calculations with perturbative pions, find for the spin-2 partner of the $X(3872)$ a significant shift of the mass as well as a width of the order of 50 MeV.

Interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in near-threshold states: A practical parametrisation for line shapes

We propose a practical parametrisation for the line shapes of near-threshold states compatible with all requirements of unitarity and analyticity. The coupled-channel system underlying the proposed parametrisation includes bare poles and an arbitrary number of elastic and inelastic channels treated fully nonperturbatively. The resulting formulae are general enough to be used for a simultaneous analysis of the data in all available production and decay channels of the (system of) state(s) under consideration for a quite wide class of reactions. As an example, we fit the experimental data currently available for several decay channels for the charged $Z_b^{(\prime)}$ states in the spectrum of bottomonia and find a good overall description of the data. We find the present data to be consistent with the $Z_b(10610)$ as a virtual state and with the $Z_b(10650)$ as a resonance, both residing very close to the $B\bar{B}^*$ and $B^*\bar{B}^*$ threshold, respectively.

Remarks on meson loop effects on quark models

We investigate the effect of meson loops on the spectrum of quark states. We demonstrate that in general quark states do not tend to get very broad if their coupling to the continuum increases, but instead they decouple from the latter in the large coupling limit. We ascribe this effect to the essentially nonperturbative unitarization procedure involved. In the meantime, some quark resonances behave very differently and demonstrate collectivity in the sense that their pole trajectories span a wide, as compared to the level spacing, region therefore acquiring contributions from multiple bare poles rather than from the closest neighbors. While the actual calculations are done within particular, very simplified models, it is argued that the findings might well be general.

Threshold pion production in proton-proton collisions at NNLO in chiral EFT

The reaction $NN \to NN π$ offers a good testing ground for chiral effective field theory at intermediate energies. It challenges our understanding of the first inelastic channel in nucleon-nucleon scattering and of the charge-symmetry breaking pattern in hadronic reactions. In our previous studies, we presented a complete calculation of the pion-production operator for s-wave pions up-to-and-including next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the formulation of chiral effective field theory, which includes pions, nucleons and $Δ(1232)$ degrees of freedom. In this paper we calculate the near threshold cross section for the $pp \to d π^{+}$ reaction by performing the convolution of the obtained operators with nuclear wave functions based on modern phenomenological and chiral potentials. The available chiral $NN$ wave functions are constructed with a cutoff comparable with the momentum transfer scale inherent in pion production reactions. Hence, a significant portion of the dynamical intermediate-range physics is thereby cut off by them. On the other hand, the NNLO amplitudes evaluated with phenomenological wave functions appear to be largely independent of the $NN$ model used and give corrections to the dominant leading order contributions as expected from dimensional analysis. The result gives support to the counting scheme used to classify the pion production operators, which is a precondition for a reliable investigation of the chirally suppressed neutral pion production. The explicit inclusion of the $Δ(1232)$ is found to be important but smaller than expected due to cancellations.

A practical parametrization for line shapes of near-threshold states

Numerous quarkonium(like) states lying near $S$-wave thresholds are observed experimentally. We propose a self-consistent approach to these near-threshold states compatible with unitarity and analyticity. The underlying coupled-channel system includes a bare pole and an arbitrary number of elastic and inelastic channels treated fully nonperturbatively. The resulting analytical parametrization is ideally suited for a combined analysis of the data available in various channels that is exemplified by an excellent overall description of the data for the charged $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ states.

Analysis Tools for Next-Generation Hadron Spectroscopy Experiments

The series of workshops on New Partial-Wave Analysis Tools for Next-Generation Hadron Spectroscopy Experiments was initiated with the ATHOS 2012 meeting, which took place in Camogli, Italy, June 20-22, 2012. It was followed by ATHOS 2013 in Kloster Seeon near Munich, Germany, May 21-24, 2013. The third, ATHOS3, meeting is planned for April 13-17, 2015 at The George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus, USA. The workshops focus on the development of amplitude analysis tools for meson and baryon spectroscopy, and complement other programs in hadron spectroscopy organized in the recent past including the INT-JLab Workshop on Hadron Spectroscopy in Seattle in 2009, the International Workshop on Amplitude Analysis in Hadron Spectroscopy at the ECT*-Trento in 2011, the School on Amplitude Analysis in Modern Physics in Bad Honnef in 2011, the Jefferson Lab Advanced Study Institute Summer School in 2012, and the School on Concepts of Modern Amplitude Analysis Techniques in Flecken-Zechlin near Berlin in September 2013. The aim of this document is to summarize the discussions that took place at the ATHOS 2012 and ATHOS 2013 meetings. We do not attempt a comprehensive review of the field of amplitude analysis, but offer a collection of thoughts that we hope may lay the ground for such a document.

Nuclear Electric Dipole Moments in Chiral Effective Field Theory

We provide a consistent and complete calculation of the electric dipole moments of the deuteron, helion, and triton in the framework of chiral effective field theory. The CP-conserving and CP-violating interactions are treated on equal footing and we consider CP-violating one-, two-, and three-nucleon operators up to next-to-leading-order in the chiral power counting. In particular, we calculate for the first time EDM contributions induced by the CP-violating three-pion operator. We find that effects of CP-violating nucleon-nucleon contact interactions are larger than those found in previous studies based on phenomenological models for the CP-conserving nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results which apply to any model of CP violation in the hadronic sector can be used to test various scenarios of CP violation. As examples, we study the implications of our results on the QCD $θ$-term and the minimal left-right symmetric model.

Photocouplings at the Pole from Pion Photoproduction

The reactions $γp\toπ^0 p$ and $γp\toπ^+ n$ are analyzed in a semi-phenomenological approach up to $E\sim2.3$ GeV. Fits to differential cross section and single and double polarization observables are performed. A good overall reproduction of the available photoproduction data is achieved. The Jülich2012 dynamical coupled-channel model -which describes elastic $πN$ scattering and the world data base of the reactions $πN\toηN$, $KΛ$, and $KΣ$ at the same time - is employed as the hadronic interaction in the final state. The framework guarantees analyticity and, thus, allows for a reliable extraction of resonance parameters in terms of poles and residues. In particular, the photocouplings at the pole can be extracted and are presented.

Remarks on the study of the X(3872) from Effective Field Theory with Pion-Exchange Interaction

In a recent paper Phys.Rev.Lett. 111, 042002 (2013) (arXiv:1304.0846), the charmonium state X(3872) is studied in the framework of an effective field theory. In that work it is claimed that (i) the one-pion exchange (OPE) alone provides sufficient binding to produce the X as a shallow bound state at the $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}$ threshold, (ii) short-range dynamics (described by a contact interaction) provides only moderate corrections to the OPE, and (iii) the X-pole disappears as the pion mass is increased slightly and therefore the X should not be seen on the lattice, away from the pion physical mass point, if it were a molecular state. In this paper we demonstrate that the results of Phys.Rev.Lett. 111, 042002 (2013) (arXiv:1304.0846) suffer from technical as well as conceptual problems and therefore do not support the conclusions drawn by the authors.

Charge Symmetry Breaking in dd->4Heπ0 with WASA-at-COSY

Charge symmetry breaking (CSB) observables are a suitable experimental tool to examine effects induced by quark masses on the nuclear level. Previous high precision data from TRIUMF and IUCF are currently used to develop a consistent description of CSB within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. In this work the experimental studies on the reaction dd->4Heπ0 have been extended towards higher excess energies in order to provide information on the contribution of p-waves in the final state. For this, an exclusive measurement has been carried out at a beam momentum of p=1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section amounts to sigma(tot) = (118 +- 18(stat) +- 13(sys) +- 8(ext)) pb and first data on the differential cross section are consistent with s-wave pion production.

Direct X(3872) production in e+e- collisions

Direct production of the charmonium-like state $X(3872)$ in $e^+e^-$ collisions is considered in the framework of the vector meson dominance model. An order-of-magnitude estimate for the width $Γ(X\to e^+e^-)$ is found to be $\gtrsim$0.03 eV. The same approach applied to the $χ_{c1}$ charmonium decay predicts the corresponding width of the order 0.1 eV in agreement with earlier estimates. Experimental perspectives for the direct production of the $1^{++}$ charmonia in $e^+e^-$ collisions are briefly discussed.

Investigation of the dd -> 3He n π0 reaction with the FZ Jülich WASA-at-COSY facility

An exclusive measurement of the dd -> 3He n π0 reaction was carried at a beam momentum of p = 1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. For the first time data on the total cross section as well as differential distributions were obtained. The data are described with a phenomenological approach based on a combination of a quasi-free model and a partial wave expansion for three-body reaction. The total cross section is found to be σ(tot) = (2.89 +- 0.01(stat) +- 0.06(sys) +- 0.29(norm)) μb. The contribution of the quasi-free processes (with the neutron being target or beam spectator) accounts for 38% of the total cross section and dominates the differential distributions in specific regions of the phase space. The remaining part of the cross section can be described within a partial wave decomposition indicating the significance of p-wave contributions in the final state.

Remarks on pole trajectories for resonances

We discuss in general terms pole trajectories of resonances coupling to a continuum channel as some strength parameter is varied. It is demonstrated that, regardless the underlying dynamics, the trajectories of poles that couple to the continuum in a partial wave higher than s-wave are qualitatively the same, while in case of s-waves the pole trajectory can reveal important information on the internal structure of the resonance. In addition we show that only molecular (or extraordinary) states appear near thresholds naturally, while more compact structures need a significant fine tuning in the parameters. This study is of current relevance especially in strong interaction physics, since lattice QCD may be employed to deduce the pole trajectories for hadronic resonances as a function of the quark mass thus providing additional, new access to the structure of s-wave resonances.

Unraveling models of CP violation through electric dipole moments of light nuclei

We show that the proposed measurements of the electric dipole moments of light nuclei in storage rings would put strong constraints on models of flavor-diagonal CP violation. Our analysis is exemplified by a comparison of the Standard Model including the QCD theta term, the minimal left-right symmetric model, a specific version of the so-called aligned two-Higgs doublet model, and briefly the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. By using effective field theory techniques we demonstrate to what extend measurements of the electric dipole moments of the nucleons, the deuteron, and helion could discriminate between these scenarios. We discuss how measurements of electric dipole moments of other systems relate to the light-nuclear measurements.

Coupled-channel dynamics in the reactions piN --> piN, etaN, KLambda, KSigma

Elastic piN scattering and the world data of the family of reactions pi^- p --> eta n, K^0 Lambda$, K^0 Sigma^0, K^+ Sigma^-, and pi^+ p --> K^+ Sigma^+ are described simultaneously in an analytic, unitary, coupled-channel approach. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate both the t- and the u- channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. Partial-wave amplitudes are determined and the resonance content is extracted from the analytic continuation, including resonance positions and branching ratios, and possible sources of uncertainties are discussed. The results provide the final-state interactions for the ongoing analysis of photo- and electroproduction data.

Dispersive analysis for $η\to γγ^*$

A dispersion integral is derived that connects data on $η\to π^+π^-γ$ to the $η\to γγ^*$ transition form factor. A detailed analysis of the uncertainties is provided. We find for the slope of the $η$ transition form factor at the origin $b_η= (2.05 {}^{+0.22}_{-0.10})\, {\rm GeV}^{-2}$. Using an additional, plausible assumption, one finds for the corresponding slope of the $η'$ transition form factor, $b_{η'} = (1.58 {}^{+0.15}_{-0.08})\, {\rm GeV}^{-2}$. Both values are consistent with all recent data, but differ from some previous theoretical analyses.

Final-State Interactions in the Process pp -> pKLambda

The possibility to determine the pLambda scattering length from the final-state interaction in the reaction pp->pKLambda is investigated experimentally. From a transversely polarized measurement, the K analyzing power (A_N) which, in principle, allows one to extract the spin triplet scattering length is studied. An unexpected energy dependence of the forward/backward symmetric part of A_N is found. The influence of N*-resonances on the pLambda invariant mass spectrum is investigated by exploiting the large acceptance for the process pp->pKLambda->pKppi and is found to be the main source of uncertainty for determining the pLambda scattering length.

On the SigmaN cusp in the pp -> pK+Lambda reaction

Measurements of the $pp \to pK^+Λ$ reaction at $T_p$ = 2.28 GeV have been carried out at COSY-TOF. In addition to the $Λp$ FSI and $N^*$ resonance excitation effects a pronounced narrow structure is observed in the Dalitz plot and in its projection on the $pΛ$-invariant mass. The structure appears at the $pp \to $N$K^+Σ$ threshold and is interpreted as $Σ$N cusp effect. The observed width of 20 MeV/$c^2$ is substantially broader than anticipated from previous inclusive measurements. Angular distributions of this cusp structure are shown to be dissimilar to those in the residual $pK^+Λ$ channel, but similar to those observed in the $pK^+Σ^0$ channel.

Pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions in chiral effective field theory with Delta(1232)-degrees of freedom

A calculation of the pion-production operator up to next-to-next-to-leading order for s-wave pions is performed within chiral effective field theory. In the previous study [Phys. Rev. C 85, 054001 (2012)] we discussed the contribution of the pion-nucleon loops at the same order. Here we extend that study to include explicit Delta degrees of freedom and the 1/m_N^2 corrections to the pion-production amplitude. Using the power counting scheme where the Delta-nucleon mass difference is of the order of the characteristic momentum scale in the production process, we calculate all tree-level and loop diagrams involving Delta up to next-to-next-to-leading order. The long-range part of the Delta loop contributions is found to be of similar size to that from the pion-nucleon loops which supports the counting scheme. The net effect of pion-nucleon and Delta loops is expected to play a crucial role in understanding of the neutral pion production data.

Quark mass dependence of the X(3872) binding energy

We explore the quark-mass dependence of the pole position of the X(3872) state within the molecular picture. The calculations are performed within the framework of a nonrelativistic Faddeev-type three-body equation for the $D\bar{D}π$ system in the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ channel. The $πD$ interaction is parametrised via a $D^*$ pole, and a three-body force is included to render the equations well defined. Its strength is adjusted such that the X(3872) appears as a $D\bar{D}^*$ bound state 0.5 MeV below the neutral threshold. We find that the trajectory of the X(3872) depends strongly on the assumed quark-mass dependence of the short-range interactions which can be determined in future lattice QCD calculations. At the same time we are able to provide nontrivial information on the chiral extrapolation in the $X$ channel.

Varying the light quark mass: impact on the nuclear force and Big Bang nucleosynthesis

The quark mass dependences of light element binding energies and nuclear scattering lengths are derived using chiral perturbation theory in combination with non-perturbative methods. In particular, we present new, improved values for the quark mass dependence of meson resonances that enter the nuclear force. A detailed analysis of the theoretical uncertainties arising in this determination is presented. As an application we derive from a comparison of observed and calculated primordial deuterium and helium abundances a stringent limit on the variation of the light quark mass, $δm_q/m_q = 0.02 \pm 0.04$. Inclusion of the neutron lifetime modification under the assumption of a variation of the Higgs vacuum expectation value that translates into changing quark, electron, and weak gauge boson masses, leads to a stronger limit, $|δm_q/m_q| < 0.009$.

Improving the Hadron Physics of Non-Standard-Model Decays: Example Bounds on R-parity Violation

Using the example of selected decays driven by R-parity-violating supersymmetric operators, we demonstrate how strong final-state interactions can be controlled quantitatively with high precision, thus allowing for a more accurate extraction of effective parameters from data. In our examples we focus on the lepton-flavor-violating decays tau --> mu pi+ pi-. In R-parity violation these can arise due to the product of two couplings. We find bounds that are an order of magnitude stronger than previous ones.

Pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions in chiral effective field theory: next-to-next-to-leading order contributions

A complete calculation of the pion-nucleon loops that contribute to the transition operator for $NN\to NNπ$ up-to-and-including next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO) in chiral effective field theory near threshold is presented. The evaluation is based on the so-called momentum counting scheme, which takes into account the relatively large momentum of the initial nucleons inherent in pion-production reactions. We show that the significant cancellations between the loops found at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the earlier studies are also operative at N$^2$LO. In particular, the $1/m_N$ corrections (with $m_N$ being the nucleon mass) to loop diagrams cancel at N$^2$LO, as do the contributions of the pion loops involving the low-energy constants $c_i$, i=1...4. In contrast to the NLO calculation however, the cancellation of loops at N$^2$LO is incomplete, yielding a non-vanishing contribution to the transition amplitude. Together with the one-pion exchange tree-level operators, the loop contributions provide the long-range part of the production operator. Finally, we discuss the phenomenological implications of these findings. In particular, we find that the amplitudes generated by the N$^2$LO pion loops yield contributions comparable in size with the most important phenomenological heavy-meson exchange amplitudes.

The electric dipole moment of the deuteron from the QCD $θ$-term

The two-nucleon contributions to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron, induced by the QCD $θ$-term, are calculated in the framework of effective field theory up-to-and-including next-to-next-to-leading order. In particular we find for the difference of the deuteron EDM and the sum of proton and neutron EDM induced by the QCD $θ$-term a value of $(-5.4\pm 3.9)\,\barθ\times 10^{-4}\, e$ fm. The by far dominant uncertainty comes from the CP- and isospin-violating $πNN$ coupling constant.

The multiple-scattering series in pion-deuteron scattering and the nucleon-nucleon potential: perspectives from effective field theory

Important contributions to meson-nucleus scattering are produced by terms in the multiple-scattering series, which is defined as the sum of all diagrams where the meson scatters back and forth between a pair of static nucleons before leaving the nucleus. In particular, the sum of this series is needed for an accurate description of kaon-deuteron scattering, and appears as part of the nucleon-nucleon potential. In this article we present some effective-field-theory (EFT)-based insights into this series in the case of two-nucleon systems. In particular, we discuss the fact that, if meson-nucleon scattering is approximated by the scattering-length term, individual terms of the series are divergent, and enhanced with respect to the straightforward expectation from chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). This apparently indicates the presence of similarly enhanced counterterms. However, we show that when the series is resummed the divergences cancel, such that no additional information on short-range interactions is needed to obtain predictions for observables after resummation. We discuss the conditions under which this resummation is justified. We show that the same issues arise in the $NN$ potential, where the resummed series produces poles whose appearance indicates the breakdown scale of the $χ$PT expansion for that quantity. This demonstrates unequivocally that $χ$PT cannot be applied to compute $V(r)$ for distances smaller than $r \sim 1$ fm at least in the theory without explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom. We briefly discuss whether this bound can be lowered if the Delta resonance is included in the EFT as an explicit degree of freedom.

Two- and three-body structure of the Y(4660)

We study general features of three-meson bound states using the Y(4660) as an example. Here the Y(4660) is assumed to be either a two-body bound state of the f_0(980), itself a bound state of K and Kbar, and the psi'= psi(2s), or a three-body bound state of psi', K, and Kbar. In particular, we investigate in detail the interplay of the various scales inherent in the problem, namely the f_0 binding energy, the Y binding energy, and the K-psi' scattering length. This allows us to understand under which circumstances the substructure of the f_0(980) can be neglected in the description of the Y(4660).

ABC Effect in Basic Double-Pionic Fusion --- Observation of a new resonance?

We report on a high-statistics measurement of the basic double pionic fusion reaction $pn \to dπ^0π^0$ over the energy region of the so-called ABC effect, a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the $ππ$-invariant mass spectrum. The measurements were performed with the WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal the ABC effect to be associated with a Lorentzian shaped energy dependence in the integral cross section. The observables are consistent with a resonance with $I(J^P) =0(3^+)$ in both $pn$ and $ΔΔ$ systems. Necessary further tests of the resonance interpretation are discussed.

Differential cross section and analysing power of the pp -> {pp\}_s pi0 reaction at 353 MeV

In order to establish links between p-wave pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions and low energy three-nucleon scattering, an extensive programme of experiments on pion production is currently underway at COSY-ANKE. The final proton pair is detected at very low excitation energy, leading to an S-wave diproton, denoted here as {pp}_s. We now report on measurements of the differential cross section and analysing power of the pol{p}p->{pp}_s pi^0$ reaction at 353 MeV. Both observables can be described in terms of s- and d-wave pion production and, by using the phase information from elastic pp scattering, unique solutions can be obtained for the corresponding amplitudes. This information is vital for the partial wave decomposition of the corresponding pn->{pp}_s pi^- reaction and hence for the extraction of the p-wave terms.

Dynamical coupled-channels model study of pion photoproduction

The photoproduction of pion off nucleon is investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels approach based on the Juelich pi-N model, which has been quite successful in the description of pi-N to pi-N scattering for center-of-mass energies up to 1.9 GeV. The full pion photoproduction amplitude is constructed to satisfy the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity and hence, it is fully gauge invariant. The calculated differential cross sections and photon spin asymmetries up to 1.65 GeV center-of-mass energy for the reactions gamma p to pi^+ n, gamma p to pi^0 p and gamma n to pi^- p are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Exclusive Measurement of the eta --> pi+ pi- gamma Decay

An exclusive measurement of the decay eta --> pi+ pi- gamma has been performed at the WASA facility at COSY. The eta mesons were produced in the fusion reaction pd --> 3He X at a proton beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c. Efficiency corrected differential distributions have been extracted based on 13340\pm140 events after background subtraction. The measured pion angular distribution is consistent with a relative p-wave of the two-pion system, whereas the measured photon energy spectrum was found at variance with the simplest gauge invariant matrix element of eta --> pi+ pi- gamma. A parameterization of the data can be achieved by the additional inclusion of the empirical pion vector form factor multiplied by a first-order polynomial in the squared invariant mass of the pi+ pi- system.

Heavy quarkonium: progress, puzzles, and opportunities

A golden age for heavy quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and provided specific recommendations for further progress. However, the broad spectrum of subsequent breakthroughs, surprises, and continuing puzzles could only be partially anticipated. Since the release of the YR, the BESII program concluded only to give birth to BESIII; the $B$-factories and CLEO-c flourished; quarkonium production and polarization measurements at HERA and the Tevatron matured; and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC have opened a window on the deconfinement regime. All these experiments leave legacies of quality, precision, and unsolved mysteries for quarkonium physics, and therefore beg for continuing investigations. The plethora of newly-found quarkonium-like states unleashed a flood of theoretical investigations into new forms of matter such as quark-gluon hybrids, mesonic molecules, and tetraquarks. Measurements of the spectroscopy, decays, production, and in-medium behavior of c\bar{c}, b\bar{b}, and b\bar{c} bound states have been shown to validate some theoretical approaches to QCD and highlight lack of quantitative success for others. The intriguing details of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions that have emerged from RHIC have elevated the importance of separating hot- and cold-nuclear-matter effects in quark-gluon plasma studies. This review systematically addresses all these matters and concludes by prioritizing directions for ongoing and future efforts.

Interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in a near-threshold resonance: multi-channel case

We investigate the interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in a physical state representing a near-threshold resonance for the case of multiple continuum channels. The aim is to demonstrate the full complexity of near-threshold phenomena. It turns out that those are especially rich, if both quark and meson dynamics generate simultaneously weakly coupled near-threshold poles in the S-matrix. We study the properties of this scenario in detail, such as t-matrix and production amplitude zeros, as well as various effects of the continuum channels interplay.

Model-independent approach to eta -> pi+ pi- gamma and eta' -> pi+ pi- gamma

We present a new, model-independent method to analyze radiative decays of mesons to a vector, isovector pair of pions of invariant mass square below the first significant pion-pion threshold in the vector channel. It is based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and dispersion theory. This allows for a controlled inclusion of resonance physics without the necessity to involve vector meson dominance explicitly. As an example, the method is applied to an analysis of the reactions eta -> pi+ pi- gamma and eta'->pi+ pi- gamma.

N_c and m_pi dependence of rho and sigma mesons from unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

We review our work on the rho and sigma resonances derived from the Inverse Amplitude Method. In particular, we study the leading 1/N_c behavior of the resonances masses and widths and their evolution with changing m_pi. The 1/N_c expansion gives a clear definition of quark-antiquark states, which is neatly satisfied by the rho but not by the sigma, showing that its dominant component is not quark-antiquark. The m_pi dependence of the resonance properties is relevant to connect with lattice studies. We show that our predictions compare well with some lattice results and we find that the rho-pi-pi coupling constant is m_pi independent, in contrast with the sigma-pi-pi coupling, that shows a strong m_pi dependence.

Pion photoproduction in a dynamical coupled-channels model

The charged and neutral pion photoproduction reactions are investigated in a dynamical coupled-channels approach based on the formulation of Haberzettl, Huang, and Nakayama [Phys. Rev. C 83, 065502 (2011)]. The hadronic final-state interaction is provided by the Juelich pi-N model, which includes the channels pi-N and eta-N comprising stable hadrons as well as the effective pi-pi-N channels pi-Delta, sigma-N, and rho-N. This hadronic model has been quite successful in describing pi-N to pi-N scattering for center-of-mass energies up to 1.9 GeV. By construction, the full pion photoproduction current satisfies the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity and thus is gauge invariant as a matter of course. The calculated differential cross sections and photon spin asymmetries up to 1.65 GeV center-of-mass energy for the reactions gamma p to pi+ n, gamma p to pi0 p, gamma n to pi- p and gamma n to pi0 n are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Precision calculation of threshold pi^- d scattering, pi N scattering lengths, and the GMO sum rule

We use chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) to calculate the $π^- d$ scattering length with an accuracy of a few percent, including isospin-violating corrections both in the two- and three-body sector. In particular, we provide the technical details of a recent letter, where we used data on pionic deuterium and pionic hydrogen atoms to extract the isoscalar and isovector pion-nucleon scattering lengths $a^+$ and $a^-$. We study isospin-breaking contributions to the three-body part of $a_{π^-d}$ due to mass differences, isospin violation in the $πN$ scattering lengths, and virtual photons. This last class of effects is ostensibly infrared enhanced due to the smallness of the deuteron binding energy. However, we show that the leading virtual-photon effects that might undergo such enhancement cancel, and hence the standard ChPT counting provides a reliable estimate of isospin violation in $a_{π^- d}$ due to virtual photons. Finally, we discuss the validity of the Goldberger-Miyazawa-Oehme sum rule in the presence of isospin violation, and use it to determine the charged-pion-nucleon coupling constant.

Relevance of complex branch points for partial wave analysis

A central issue in hadron spectroscopy is to deduce --- and interpret --- resonance parameters, namely pole positions and residues, from experimental data, for those are the quantities to be compared to lattice QCD or model calculations. However, not every structure in the observables derives from a resonance pole: the origin might as well be branch points, either located on the real axis (when a new channel comprised of stable particles opens) or in the complex plane (when at least one of the intermediate particles is unstable). In this paper we demonstrate first the existence of such branch points in the complex plane and then show on the example of the piN P11 partial wave that it is not possible to distinguish the structures induced by the latter from a true pole signal based on elastic data alone.

Scattering lengths of strangeness S=-2 baryon-baryon interactions

We reconsider a method based on dispersion theory, that allows one to extract the scattering length of any two-baryon system from corresponding final-state interactions in production reactions. The application of the method to baryon-baryon systems with strangeness S=-2 and S=-3 systems is discussed. Theoretical uncertainties due to the presence of inelastic channels with near-by thresholds are examined for the specific situation of the reaction K^- d -> K^0 Lambda Lambda and the coupling of Lambda Lambda to the Xi N channel. The possibility to disentangle spin-triplet and spin-singlet scattering lengths by means of various polarization measurements is demonstrated for several production reactions in K^- d and gamma d scattering. Employing the method to available data on the Lambda Lambda invariant mass from the reaction ^{12}C(K^-,K^+ Lambda Lambda X), a 1S0 scattering length of a(Lambda Lambda)=-1.2\pm 0.6 fm is deduced.

Three-body $D\bar{D}π$ dynamics for the X(3872)

We investigate the role played by the three-body $D\bar{D}π$ dynamics on the near-threshold resonance X(3872) charmonium state, which is assumed to be formed by nonperturbative $D\bar D^*$ dynamics. It is demonstrated that, as compared to the naive static-pions approximation, the imaginary parts that originate from the inclusion of dynamical pions reduce substantially the width from the $D\bar{D}π$ intermediate state. In particular, for a resonance peaked at 0.5 MeV below the $D^0\bar D^{*0}$ threshold, this contribution to the width is reduced by about a factor of 2, and the effect of the pion dynamics on the width grows as long as the resonance is shifted towards the $D^0\bar{D^0}π^0$ threshold. Although the physical width of the $X$ is dominated by inelastic channels, our finding should still be of importance for the $X$ line shapes in the $D\bar{D}π$ channel below $D{\bar D}^*$ threshold. For example, in the scattering length approximation, the imaginary part of the scattering length includes effects of all the pion dynamics and does not only stem from the $D^*$ width. Meanwhile, we find that another important quantity for the $X$ phenomenology, the residue at the $X$ pole, is weakly sensitive to dynamical pions. In particular, we find that the binding energy dependence of this quantity from the full calculation is close to that found from a model with pointlike $D\bar D^*$ interactions only, consistent with earlier claims. Coupled-channel effects (inclusion of the charged $D\bar{D}^*$ channel) turn out to have a moderate impact on the results.

When hadrons become unstable: a novel type of non-analyticity in chiral extrapolations

Hadron masses show a specific dependence on the quark masses. Therefore, the variation of these masses can cause a resonance in a hadronic scattering amplitude to become a bound state. Consequently, the amplitude exhibits a non-analytic behavior at this transition. Crossed amplitudes, where the resonance can be exchanged in the t-channel, can be shown to exhibit the same phenomenon by s-->t analytic continuation. This entails possible kinks in lattice quark mass extrapolations needed to compute hadronic observables.

Interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in a near-threshold resonance

We investigate the interplay of quark and meson degrees of freedom in a physical state representing a near-threshold resonance for the case of a single continuum channel. We demonstrate that such a near-threshold resonance may possess quite peculiar properties if both quark and meson dynamics generate weakly coupled near-threshold poles in the S-matrix. In particular, the scattering t-matrix may possess zeros in this case. We also discuss possible implications for production reactions as well as studies within lattice QCD.

We discuss on very general grounds possible lineshapes of composite particles with one unstable constituent. Expressions are derived in a coupled-channel formalism for constituents interacting in an S-wave with no assumption made on the width of one of them. We show how easy-to-use formulae, already existing in the literature, emerge for narrow constituents and identify the parameter that controls the regime of their applicability.

Precision calculation of the pi^- deuteron scattering length and its impact on threshold pi-N scattering

We present a calculation of the pi^- d scattering length with an accuracy of a few percent using chiral perturbation theory. For the first time isospin-violating corrections are included consistently. Using data on pionic deuterium and pionic hydrogen atoms, we extract the isoscalar and isovector pion-nucleon scattering lengths and obtain a^+=(7.6 +/- 3.1) x 10^{-3} mpi^{-1} and a^-=(86.1 +/- 0.9) x 10^{-3} mpi^{-1}. Via the Goldberger-Miyazawa-Oehme sum rule, this leads to a charged-pion-nucleon coupling constant g_c^2/4 pi = 13.69 +/- 0.20.

QCD tests from pion reactions on few-nucleon systems

We show on two examples, namely a calculation for charge symmetry breaking in pn->d pi^0 that allows one to extract the quark mass difference induced part of the proton--neutron mass difference and a high precision calculation for pion--deuteron scattering and its implications for the value of the charged pion--nucleon coupling constant, how QCD tests can be performed from low energy hadronic observables.

Study of the $f_2(1270)$, $f_2'(1525)$, $f_0(1370)$ and $f_0(1710)$ in the $J/ψ$ radiative decays

In this paper we present an approach to study the radiative decay modes of the $J/ψ$ into a photon and one of the tensor mesons $f_2(1270)$, $f'_2(1525)$, as well as the scalar ones $f_0(1370)$ and $f_0(1710)$. Especially we compare predictions that emerge from a scheme where the states appear dynamically in the solution of vector meson--vector meson scattering amplitudes to those from a (admittedly naive) quark model. We provide evidence that it might be possible to distinguish amongst the two scenarios, once improved data are available.

The reaction pi+ p --> K+ Sigma+ in a unitary coupled-channels model

Elastic pi N scattering and the reaction pi+ p --> K+ Sigma+ are described simultaneously in a unitary coupled-channels approach which respects analyticity. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate the t- and u-channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. The pole structure of the amplitudes is extracted from the analytic continuation.

Towards a high precision calculation for the pion-nucleus scattering lengths

We calculate the leading isospin conserving few-nucleon contributions to pion scattering on $^2$H, $^3$He, and $^4$He. We demonstrate that the strong contributions to the pion-nucleus scattering lengths can be controlled theoretically to an accuracy of a few percent for isoscalar nuclei and of 10% for isovector nuclei. In particular, we find the $π$-$^3$He scattering length to be $(62 \pm 4\pm 7)\times 10^{-3} m_π^{-1}$ where the uncertainties are due to ambiguities in the $π$-N scattering lengths and few-nucleon effects, respectively. To establish this accuracy we need to identify a suitable power counting for pion-nucleus scattering. For this purpose we study the dependence of the two-nucleon contributions to the scattering length on the binding energy of $^2$H. Furthermore, we investigate the relative size of the leading two-, three-, and four-nucleon contributions. For the numerical evaluation of the pertinent integrals, aMonte Carlo method suitable for momentum space is devised. Our results show that in general the power counting suggested by Weinberg is capable to properly predict the relative importance of $N$-nucleon operators, however, it fails to capture the relative strength of $N$- and $(N+1)$-nucleon operators, where we find a suppression by a factor of 5 compared to the predicted factor of 50. The relevance for the extraction of the isoscalar $π$-N scattering length from pionic $^2$H and $^4$He is discussed. As a side result, we show that beyond the calculation of the $π$-$^2$H scattering length is already beyond the range of applicability of heavy pion effective field theory.

Extraction of the strong neutron-proton mass difference from the charge symmetry breaking in pn-->d pi0

We perform a complete calculation of charge symmetry breaking effects for the reaction pn -> d pi0 at leading order in chiral perturbation theory. A new leading-order operator is included. From our analysis we extract δm_N^{str}, the strong contribution to the neutron-proton mass difference. The value obtained, δm_N^{str} = 1.5 \pm 0.8 (exp.) \pm 0.5 (th.) MeV, is consistent with the result based on the Cottingham sum rule. This agreement provides a non-trivial test of our current understanding of the chiral structure of QCD.

Gauge invariance in the presence of a cutoff

We use the method of gauging equations to construct the electromagnetic current operator for the two-nucleon system in a theory with a finite cutoff. The employed formulation ensures that the two-nucleon T-matrix and corresponding five-point function, in the cutoff theory, are identical to the ones formally defined by a reference theory without a cutoff. A feature of our approach is that it effectively introduces a cutoff into the reference theory in a way that maintains the long-range part of the exchange current operator; for applications to effective field theory (EFT), this property is usually sufficient to guarantee the predictive power of the resulting cutoff theory. In addition, our approach leads to Ward-Takahashi (WT) identities that are linear in the interactions. From the point of view of EFT's where such a WT identity is satisfied in the reference theory, this ensures that gauge invariance in the cutoff theory is maintained order by order in the expansion.

p-Wave pion production from nucleon-nucleon collisions

We investigate p-wave pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. In particular, we show that it is possible to describe simultaneously the p-wave amplitudes in the $pn\to ppπ^-$, $pp\to pnπ^+$, $pp\to dπ^+$ channels by adjusting a single low-energy constant accompanying the short-range operator which is available at this order. This study provides a non-trivial test of the applicability of chiral effective field theory to reactions of the type $NN\to NNπ$.

The effect of isospin violation on scalar meson production

We investigate the isospin-violating mixing of the light scalar mesons a0(980) and f0(980) within the unitarized chiral approach. Isospin-violating effects are considered to leading order in the quark mass difference and electromagnetism. In this approach both resonances are generated through meson-meson dynamics. Our results provide a description of the mixing phenomenon within a framework consistent with chiral symmetry and unitarity, where these resonances are not predominantly quark-antiquark states. We discuss in detail the reactions J/Psi to phi S, where S denotes a suitable pair of pseudo--scalar mesons in the scalar channel, namely pi0 eta, K+K-, and K0 \bar K^0. In this work predictions for the cross section in the kaon channels are given for the first time with isospin violating effects included.

How to measure the parity of the $Θ^+$ in $\vec p\vec p$ collisions

Triggered by a recent paper by Thomas, Hicks and Hosaka, we investigate which observables can be used to determine the parity of the $Θ^+$ from the reaction $\vec p\vec p \to Σ^+Θ^+$ near its production threshold. In particular, we show that the sign of the spin correlation coefficient $A_{xx}$ for small excess energies yields the negative of the parity of the $Θ^+$. The argument relies solely on the Pauli principle and parity conservation and is therefore model--independent.

Meson exchange models for Meson production

The production of mesons in nucleon-nucleon collisions is reviewed from the viewpoint of the meson-exchange picture. In the first part various possible production mechanisms and their relative importance are discussed. In addition, general features of meson production are described. In the second part special emphasis is put on pion production. Implications of chiral perturbation theory are discussed. Results based on a specific meson-exchange model for pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions are presented. The model is utilized to calculate several spin-dependent observables of the reactions $pp \to ppπ^0$ and $pp \to pnπ^+$ such as spin-correlation parameters. This allows us to study the role of the Delta resonance at close to threshold energies. The talk closes with a brief discussion of the production of $ϕ$ mesons as an example for the production of heavier mesons. A strategy is outlined that allows to extract information on the structure of the nucleon from the reaction $NN \to NN ϕ$.

Role of the $Δ$ isobar in the reaction $NN \to NNπ$ near threshold

A model calculation for pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions is presented. Direct production, pion rescattering and contributions from pair diagrams are taken into account. The amplitudes for the elementary processes are based on well established microscopic models of nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon scattering. The $Δ(1232)$ is included explicitly and is found to play an important role even at energies close to production threshold. A good overall agreement with existing data from the pion production threshold up to the Delta resonance region is achieved.
