Exploring interpolating momentum schemes

We compute the renormalisation factors of the quark mass and wave function using IMOM (Interpolating MOMenta) schemes. The framework is the Rome-Southampton non-renormalisation method, but the momentum transfer in the quark bilinears is not restricted to zero or to the symmetric point. We study the scale dependence, infrared contamination and lattice artefacts for different values of this momentum transfer and for two different kinds of projectors. For the numerical simulations, we use data generated by the RBC-UKQCD collaborations, with $N_f = 2+1$ flavours of Domain-Wall fermions, and inverse lattice spacing of $1.79 $ and $2.38$ GeV.

Tensor current renormalization in the RI' scheme at four loops

To assist the matching of lattice field theory results to the high energy continuum limit we evaluate the Green's function where the tensor quark bilinear operator is inserted at zero momentum in a quark $2$-point function for an arbitrary covariant gauge. This is carried out in both the MSbar and RI' schemes to four loops. The tensor current anomalous dimension is also calculated to four loops in both schemes for an arbitrary colour group.

Five loop renormalization of the Wess-Zumino model

We renormalize the Wess-Zumino model at five loops in both the minimal subtraction (MSbar) and momentum subtraction (MOM) schemes. The calculation is carried out automatically using a routine that performs the D-algebra. Generalizations of the model to include $O(N)$ symmetry as well as the case with real and complex tensor couplings are also considered. We confirm that the emergent SU(3) symmetry of six dimensional O(N) phi^3 theory is also a property of the tensor O(N) model. With the new loop order precision we compute critical exponents in the epsilon expansion for several of these generalizations as well as the XYZ model in order to compare with conformal bootstrap estimates in three dimensions. For example at five loops our estimate for the correction to scaling exponent is in very good agreement for the Wess-Zumino model which equates to the emergent supersymmetric fixed point of the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model. We also compute the rational number that is part of the six loop MSbar beta-function.

Asymptotic freedom from the two loop term of the $β$-function in a cubic theory

We renormalize a six dimensional cubic theory to four loops in the MSbar scheme where the scalar is in a bi-adjoint representation. The underlying model was originally derived in a problem relating to gravity being a double copy of Yang-Mills theory. As a field theory in its own right we find that it has a curious property in that while unexpectedly there is no one loop contribution to the $β$-function the two loop coefficient is negative. It therefore represents an example where asymptotic freedom is determined by the two loop term of the $β$-function. We also examine a multi-adjoint cubic theory in order to see whether this is a more universal property of these models.

Six dimensional ultraviolet completion of the $CP(N)$ $σ$ model at two loops

We extend the recent one loop analysis of the ultraviolet completion of the $CP(N)$ nonlinear $σ$ model in six dimensions to two loop order in the MSbar scheme for an arbitrary covariant gauge. In particular we compute the anomalous dimensions of the fields and $β$-functions of the four coupling constants. We note that like Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in four dimensions the matter field anomalous dimension only depends on the gauge parameter at one loop. As a non-trivial check we verify that the critical exponents derived from these renormalization group functions at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point are consistent with the $ε$ expansion of the respective large $N$ exponents of the underlying universal theory. Using the Ward-Takahashi identity we deduce the three loop MSbar renormalization group functions for the six dimensional ultraviolet completeness of scalar QED.

Symmetric point flavour singlet axial vector current renormalization at two loops

We calculate the two loop correction to the quark 2-point function with the non-zero momentum insertion of the flavour singlet axial vector current at the fully symmetric subtraction point for massless quarks in the modified minimal subtraction (MSbar) scheme. The Larin method is used to handle $γ^5$ within dimensional regularization at this loop order ensuring that the effect of the chiral anomaly is properly included within the construction.

Theory for the FCC-ee : Report on the 11th FCC-ee Workshop

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The reports of 2018 and 2019 serve as white papers of the workshop results and subsequent developments.

beta-functions in higher dimensional field theories

We review recent activity in the construction of the renormalization group functions for O(N) scalar and gauge theories in six and higher dimensions. The theories lie in their respective universality classes at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point. The critical exponents at this fixed point in the various dimensions are all in agreement with the known exponents determined in the large Nexpansion.

Bilinear quark operator renormalization at generalized symmetric point

We compute Green's functions with a bilinear quark operator inserted at non-zero momentum for a generalized momentum configuration to two loops. These are required to assist lattice gauge theory measurements of the same quantity in matching to the high energy behaviour. The flavour non-singlet operators considered are the scalar, vector and tensor currents as well as the second moment of the twist-2 Wilson operator used in deep inelastic scattering for the measurement of nucleon structure functions.

Banks-Zaks fixed point analysis in momentum subtraction schemes

We analyse the critical exponents relating to the quark mass anomalous dimension and beta-function at the Banks-Zaks fixed point in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in a variety of representations for the quark in the momentum subtraction (MOM) schemes of Celmaster and Gonsalves. For a specific range of values of the number of quark flavours, estimates of the exponents appear to be scheme independent. Using the recent five loop modified minimal subtraction (MSbar) scheme quark mass anomalous dimension and estimates of the fixed point location we estimate the associated exponent as 0.263-0.268 for the SU(3) colour group and 12 flavours when the quarks are in the fundamental representation.

Four loop renormalization of phi^3 theory in six dimensions

We renormalize six dimensional phi^3 theory in the modified minimal subtraction (MSbar) scheme at four loops. From the resulting beta-function, anomalous dimension and mass anomalous dimension we compute four loop critical exponents relevant to the Lee-Yang edge singularity and percolation problems. Using resummation methods and information on the exponents of the relevant two dimensional conformal field theory we obtain estimates for exponents in dimensions 3, 4 and 5 which are in reasonable agreement with other techniques for these two problems. The renormalization group functions for the more general theory with an O(N) symmetry are also computed in order to obtain estimates of exponents at various fixed points in five dimensions. Included in this O(N) analysis is the full evaluation of the mass operator mixing matrix of anomalous dimensions at four loops. We show that its eigen-exponents are in agreement with the mass exponents computed at O(1/N^2) in the non-perturbative large N expansion.

Maximal abelian and Curci-Ferrari gauges in momentum subtraction at three loops

The vertex structure of QCD fixed in the maximal abelian gauge (MAG) and Curci-Ferrari gauge is analysed at two loops at the fully symmetric point for the 3-point functions corresponding to the three momentum subtraction (MOM) renormalization schemes. Consequently the three loop renormalization group functions are determined for each of these three schemes in each gauge using properties of the renormalization group equation.

preprint2015arXiv

Six dimensional QCD at two loops

We construct the six dimensional Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) Lagrangian in a linear covariant gauge and subsequently renormalize it at two loops in the MSbar scheme. The coupling constant corresponding to the gauge interaction is asymptotically free for all numbers of quark fields, Nf. Analysing the beta-functions yields a rich spectrum of fixed points. For instance, the conformal window in the six dimensional theory is at Nf = 16 for the SU(3) colour group. The critical theory structure is similar to that of an O(N) scalar theory in eight dimensions. Using the large N expansion the latter is shown to be in the same universality class as the Heisenberg ferromagnet. Similarly using the large Nf expansion, six dimensional QCD is shown to be in the same class as the two dimensional non-abelian Thirring model and four dimensional QCD. Abelian gauge theories are also renormalized at high loops in six and eight dimensions. It is shown that the gauge parameter only appears in the electron anomalous dimension at one loop, similar to four dimensions.

Conformal methods for massless Feynman integrals and large N_f methods

We review the large N method of calculating high order information on the renormalization group functions in a quantum field theory which is based on conformal integration methods. As an example these techniques are applied to a typical graph contributing to the beta-function of O(N) phi^4 theory at O(1/N^2). The possible future directions for the large N methods are discussed in light of the development of more recent techniques such as the Laporta algorithm.

MOM renormalization group functions in the maximal abelian gauge

The one loop 3-point vertex functions of QCD in the maximal abelian gauge (MAG) are evaluated at the fully symmetric point at one loop. As a consequence the theory is renormalized in the various momentum (MOM) schemes which are defined by the trivalent vertices, as well as in the MSbar scheme. From these the two loop renormalization group functions in the MOM schemes are derived using the one loop conversion functions. In parallel we repeat the analysis for the Curci-Ferrari gauge which corresponds to the MAG in a specific limit. The relation between the Lambda parameters in different schemes is also provided.

Power corrections to symmetric point vertices in Gribov-Zwanziger theory

The 3-point vertices of QCD are examined at the symmetric subtraction point at one loop in the Landau gauge in the presence of the Gribov mass, gamma. They are expanded in powers of gamma^2 up to dimension four in order to determine the order of the leading correction. As well as analysing the pure Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian, its extensions to include localizing ghost masses are also examined. For comparison a pure gluon mass term is also considered.

Three loop renormalization of 3-quark operators in QCD

We compute the three loop MSbar anomalous dimension for the 3-quark operator corresponding to the proton. This requires the treatment of gamma^5 within dimensional regularization as well as evanescent operators generated through the renormalization. We extend the Larin scheme for gamma^5 to a mixing matrix of finite renormalization constants chosen so that chiral symmetry is manifest in four dimensions. We also provide the finite part of the Green's function at two loops where the operator is inserted at zero momentum in a quark 3-point function in an arbitrary linear covariant gauge in order to assist with the lattice measurement of the same quantity. The renormalization of the generalized 3-quark operators in the scheme devised by Kraenkl and Manashov is extended to three loops and the anomalous dimensions for the (1/2,0), (3/2,0) and (1,1/2) spin operators with various chiralities are also given.

Amplitudes for the n = 3 moment of the Wilson operator at two loops in the RI/'SMOM scheme

The renormalization of the third moment of the twist-2 flavour non-singlet Wilson operator is given to two loops in the RI'/SMOM renormalization scheme. This involves renormalizing the operator itself and the two total derivative operators into which it mixes by inserting it into a quark 2-point function and evaluating the amplitudes at the symmetric subtraction point. The corresponding two loop conversion functions are derived from which the three loop Landau gauge anomalous dimension is deduced. The full set of amplitudes for the two loop Green's function for each of the operators are given in both the MSbar and RI'/SMOM schemes.

preprint2011arXiv

RI'/SMOM scheme amplitudes for quark currents at two loops

We determine the two loop corrections to the Green's function of a quark current inserted in a quark 2-point function at the symmetric subtraction point. The amplitudes for the scalar, vector and tensor currents are presented in both the MSbar and RI'/SMOM renormalization schemes. The RI'/SMOM scheme two loop renormalization for the scalar and tensor cases agree with previous work. The vector current renormalization requires special treatment as it must be consistent with the Slavnov-Taylor identity which we demonstrate. We also discuss the possibility of an alternative definition of the RI'/SMOM scheme in the case of the tensor current.

preprint2011arXiv

Two loop QCD vertices at the symmetric point

We compute the triple gluon, quark-gluon and ghost-gluon vertices of QCD at the symmetric subtraction point at two loops in the MSbar scheme. In addition we renormalize each of the three vertices in their respective momentum subtraction schemes, MOMggg, MOMq and MOMh. The conversion functions of all the wave functions, coupling constant and gauge parameter renormalization constants of each of the schemes relative to MSbar are determined analytically. These are then used to derive the three loop anomalous dimensions of the gluon, quark, Faddeev-Popov ghost and gauge parameter as well as the beta-function in an arbitrary linear covariant gauge for each MOM scheme. There is good agreement of the latter with earlier Landau gauge numerical estimates of Chetyrkin and Seidensticker.

Two loop renormalization of the n = 2 Wilson operator in the RI'/SMOM scheme

We compute the anomalous dimensions of the flavour non-singlet twist-2 Wilson operators in the RI'/SMOM scheme at two loops in an arbitrary linear covariant gauge. In addition we provide the full Green's function for these operators inserted in a quark 2-point function at the symmetric subtraction point. The three loop anomalous dimensions in the Landau gauge are also derived.

Alternative refined Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian

We consider the implications of the condensation of a general local BRST invariant dimension two operator built out of the localizing ghost fields of the Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian which is a localized Lagrangian incorporating the Gribov problem in the Landau gauge. For different colour tensor projections of the general operator, the properties of a frozen gluon propagator and unenhanced Faddeev-Popov ghost propagator, which are observed in lattice computations, can be reproduced. The alternative possibilities are distinguished by the infrared structure of the propagators of the spin-1 fields, other than those of the gluon and Faddeev-Popov ghost, for which there is no numerical simulation data to compare with yet.

Loop calculations in the three dimensional Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian

The three dimensional Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian is analysed at one and two loops. Specifically, the two loop gap equation is evaluated and the Gribov mass is expressed in terms of the coupling constant. The one loop corrections to the propagators of all the fields are determined. It is shown that when the gap equation is satisfied the Faddeev-Popov ghost and both Bose and Grassmann localizing ghosts all enhance in the infrared limit at one loop. This verifies that the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion holds to this order and we also show that both Grassmann ghosts are enhanced at two loops. For the Bose ghost we determine the full form of the propagator in the zero momentum limit for both the transverse and longitudinal pieces and confirm Zwanziger's recent general analysis for the low energy behaviour. We provide an alternative but equivalent version of the horizon condition expressing it as the vacuum expectation value of an operator involving only the localizing Bose ghost field. The one loop static potential is also determined.

preprint2010arXiv

The one loop MSbar static potential in the Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian

We compute the static potential in the Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian as a function of the Gribov mass, gamma, in the MSbar scheme in the Landau gauge at one loop. The usual gauge independent one loop perturbative static potential is recovered in the limit as gamma -> 0. By contrast the Gribov-Zwanziger static potential contains the term gamma^2/(p^2)^2. However, the linearly rising potential in coordinate space as a function of the radial variable r does not emerge due to a compensating behaviour as r -> infty. Though in the short distance limit a dipole behaviour is present. We also demonstrate enhancement in the propagator of the bosonic localizing Zwanziger ghost field when the one loop Gribov gap equation is satisfied. The explicit form of the one loop gap equation for the Gribov mass parameter is also computed in the MOM scheme and the zero momentum value of the renormalization group invariant effective coupling constant is shown to be the same value as that in the MSbar scheme.

preprint2009arXiv

Three loop MSbar operator correlation functions for deep inelastic scattering in the chiral limit

We compute a variety of operator-operator correlation functions to third order in the MSbar scheme in the chiral limit. These include combinations of quark bilinear currents with gauge invariant operators such as moments n = 2 and 3 of the flavour non-singlet Wilson operators of deep inelastic scattering and moment n = 2 of the transversity operator, as well as the correlation functions of the latter operators with themselves. The explicit values of these gauge independent correlation functions are required to assist with non-perturbative matching to lattice regularized calculations of the same quantities. As part of the computation we determine the mixing matrix of renormalization constants of these non-singlet currents with their associated total derivative operators at the same twist to three loops in MSbar. Such operators are crucial in extracting renormalization constants for the operator-operator correlation functions which are consistent with the corresponding renormalization group equation. As a by-product we deduce the R-ratio for the tensor current to third order in the MSbar scheme.

Gribov ambiguities in the maximal Abelian gauge

The effects of the Gribov copies on the gluon and ghost propagators are investigated in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. By following Gribov's original approach, extended to the maximal Abelian gauge, we are able to show that the diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the characteristic Gribov type behavior. The off-diagonal component is found to be of the Yukawa type, with a dynamical mass originating from the dimension two gluon condensate, which is also taken into account. Furthermore, the off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits infrared enhancement. Finally, we make a comparison with available lattice data.

preprint2006arXiv

One loop gluon form factor and freezing of alpha_s in the Gribov-Zwanziger QCD Lagrangian

We use the Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian in QCD to evaluate the one loop correction to the gluon propagator as a function of the Gribov volume and verify that the propagator vanishes in the infrared limit. Using the corresponding correction to the Faddeev-Popov ghost propagator we construct the renormalization group invariant coupling constant, alpha^eff_S(p^2), from the gluon and ghost form factors and verify, using the Gribov mass gap condition, that it freezes out at zero momentum to a non-zero value. This is qualitatively consistent with other approaches. We also show that there is an enhancement of the propagator of one of the Zwanziger ghosts at two loops similar to that which occurs for the Faddeev-Popov ghosts. From the exact evaluation of the form factors we examine power corrections for the gluon propagator and the effective coupling. We find that both have the same qualitative behaviour in that the leading power correction is O(1/p^2) and not O(1/(p^2)^2).

preprint2006arXiv

The infrared behavior of the gluon and ghost propagators in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge

We report on some recent analytical results on the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge (MAG). This gauge is of particular interest for the dual superconductivity picture to explain color confinement. Two kinds of effects are taken into account: those arising from a treatment of Gribov copies in the MAG and those arising from a dynamical mass originating in a dimension two gluon condensate. The diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the typical Gribov-type behaviour, while the off-diagonal component is of the Yukawa type due to the dynamical mass. These results are in qualitative agreement with available lattice data on the gluon propagators. The off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits an infrared enhancement due to the Gribov restriction, while the diagonal one remains unaffected.

preprint2005arXiv

Off-diagonal mass generation for Yang-Mills theories in the maximal Abelian gauge

We investigate a dynamical mass generation mechanism for the off-diagonal gluons and ghosts in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories, quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. Such a mass can be seen as evidence for the Abelian dominance in that gauge. It originates from the condensation of a mixed gluon-ghost operator of mass dimension two, which lowers the vacuum energy. We construct an effective potential for this operator by a combined use of the local composite operators technique with algebraic renormalization and we discuss the gauge parameter independence of the results. We also show that it is possible to connect the vacuum energy, due to the mass dimension two condensate discussed here, with the non-trivial vacuum energy originating from the condensate <A^2>, which has attracted much attention in the Landau gauge.

Two loop correction to the Gribov mass gap equation in Landau gauge QCD

We determine the two loop correction to Gribov's mass gap equation for quantum chromodynamics in the Landau gauge in the MSbar scheme by computing the two loop correction to the horizon condition derived from Zwanziger's local renormalizable Lagrangian which incorporates the Gribov parameter. We verify that with the explicit result, the two loop ghost propagator is enchanced in the infrared.

Four loop wave function renormalization in the non-abelian Thirring model

We compute the anomalous dimension of the fermion field with N_f flavours in the fundamental representation of a general Lie colour group in the non-abelian Thirring model at four loops. The implications on the renormalization of the two point Green's function through the loss of multiplicative renormalizability of the model in dimensional regularization due to the appearance of evanescent four fermi operators are considered at length. We observe the appearance of one new colour group Casimir, d_F^{abcd} d_F^{abcd}, in the final four loop result and discuss its consequences for the relation of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov critical exponents in the Wess Zumino Witten Novikov model to the non-abelian Thirring model. Renormalization scheme changes are also considered to ensure that the underlying Fierz symmetry broken by dimensional regularization is restored.

Two-Loop Neutrino Masses and the Solar Neutrino Problem

The addition of $m$ singlet right-handed neutrinos to the Standard Model leads to radiatively generated mass corrections for the $SU(2)_L $ doublet neutrinos. For those neutrinos which are massless at the tree level after this addition, this implies a small mass generated at the two-loop level via $W^{\pm}$ exchange. We calculate these mass corrections exactly by obtaining an analytic form for the general case of $n$ doublets and $m$ singlets. As a phenomenological application, we consider the $m=1$ case and examine the masses and mixings of the doublet neutrinos which arise as a result of the two-loop correction in the light of experimental data from two sources which may shed light on the question of neutrino masses. These are(a) the neutrino detectors reporting a solar neutrino deficit (and its resolution via Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein matter oscillations), and (b) the COBE satellite data on the non-zero angular variations of the cosmic microwave background temperature (and its possible implications for hot dark matter). Within the framework of the extension considered here, which leaves the gauge group structure of the Standard Model intact, we show that it is possible for neutrinos to acquire small masses naturally, with values which are compatible with current theoretical bias and experimental data.

Algorithm for Computing the $\BETA$-Function of Quantum Electrodynamics in the Large N_f Expansion

By considering corrections to the asymptotic scaling functions of the photon and electron in quantum electrodynamics with $\Nf$ flavours, we solve the skeleton Dyson equations at $O(1/\Nf)$ in the large $\Nf$ expansion at the $d$-dimensional critical point of the theory and deduce the critical exponent $β^\prime(g_c)$, in arbitrary dimensions, and subsequently present a method for computing higher order corrections to $β(g)$.

Gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model at O(1/N) with and without a Chern-Simons Term

We solve the gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at leading order in the large $N$ expansion by computing the anomalous dimensions of all the fields of the model and other gauge independent critical exponents by examining the scaling behaviour of the Schwinger Dyson equation. We then restrict to the three dimensional model and include a Chern Simons term to discover the $θ$-dependence of the same exponents where $θ$ is the Chern Simons coupling.
