Renormalizability of a first principles Yang-Mills center-vortex ensemble

Recently, a new procedure to quantize the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in the nonperturbative regime was proposed. The idea is to divide the configuration space $\{A_μ\}$ into sectors labeled by different topological degrees of freedom and fix the gauge separately on each one of them. As Singer's theorem on gauge copies only refers to gauge fixing conditions that are global in $\{A_μ\}$, this construction might avoid the Gribov problem. In this work, we present a proof of the renormalizability in the center-vortex sectors, thus establishing the calculability of the Yang-Mills center-vortex ensemble.

Infinitesimal Gribov copies in gauge-fixed topological Yang-Mills theories

We study the Gribov problem in four-dimensional topological Yang-Mills theories following the Baulieu-Singer approach in the (anti-)self-dual Landau gauges. This is a gauge-fixed approach that allows to recover the topological spectrum, as first constructed by Witten, by means of an equivariant (or constrained) BRST cohomology. As standard gauge-fixed Yang-Mills theories suffer from the gauge copy (Gribov) ambiguity, one might wonder if and how this has repercussions for this analysis. The resolution of the small (infinitesimal) gauge copies, in general, affects the dynamics of the underlying theory. In particular, treating the Gribov problem for the standard Landau gauge condition in non-topological Yang-Mills theories strongly affects the dynamics of the theory in the infrared. In the current paper, although the theory is investigated with the same gauge condition, the effects of the copies turn out to be completely different. In other words: in both cases, the copies are there, but the effects are very different. As suggested by the tree-level exactness of the topological model in this gauge choice, the Gribov copies are shown to be inoffensive at the quantum level. To be more precise, following Gribov, we discuss the path integral restriction to the Gribov horizon. The associated gap equation, which fixes the so-called Gribov parameter, is however shown to only possess a trivial solution, making the restriction obsolete. We relate this to the absence of radiative corrections in both gauge and ghost sectors. We give further evidence by employing the renormalization group which shows that, for this kind of topological model, the gap equation indeed forbids the introduction of a massive Gribov parameter.

Renormalizability of the center-vortex free sector of Yang-Mills theory

In this work, we analyzed a recent proposal to detect $SU(N)$ continuum Yang-Mills sectors labeled by center vortices, inspired by Laplacian-type center gauges in the lattice. Initially, after the introduction of appropriate external sources, we obtained a rich set of sector-dependent Ward identities, which can be used to control the form of the divergences. Next, we were able to show the all-order multiplicative renormalizability of the center-vortex free sector. These are important steps towards the establishment of a first principles, well-defined, and calculable Yang-Mills ensemble.

A local and BRST-invariant Yang-Mills theory within the Gribov horizon

We present a local setup for the recently introduced BRST-invariant formulation of Yang-Mills theories for linear covariant gauges that takes into account the existence of gauge copies à la Gribov and Zwanziger. Through the convenient use of auxiliary fields, including one of the Stueckelberg type, it is shown that both the action and the associated nilpotent BRST operator can be put in local form. Direct consequences of this fully local and BRST-symmetric framework are drawn from its Ward identities: (i) an exact prediction for the longitudinal part of the gluon propagator in linear covariant gauges that is compatible with recent lattice results and (ii) a proof of the gauge-parameter independence of all correlation functions of local BRST-invariant operators.

Gauge field spectrum in massive Yang-Mills theory with Lorentz violation

The spectrum of the massive CPT-odd Yang-Mills propagator with Lorentz violation is performed at tree-level. The modification is due to mass terms generated by the exigence of multiplicative renormalizability of Yang-Mills theory with Lorentz violation. The causality analysis is performed from group and front velocities for both, spacelike and timelike background tensors. It is show that, by demanding causality, it is always possible to define a physical sector for the gauge propagator. Hence, it is expected that the model is also unitary, if one takes the Faddeev-Popov ghost into account.

More on the non-perturbative Gribov-Zwanziger quantization of linear covariant gauges

In this paper, we discuss the gluon propagator in the linear covariant gauges in $D=2,3,4$ Euclidean dimensions. Non-perturbative effects are taken into account via the so-called Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework. We point out that, as in the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges, for $D=3,4$, the gluon propagator displays a massive (decoupling) behaviour, while for $D=2$, a scaling one emerges. All results are discussed in a setup that respects the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry, through a recently introduced non-perturbative BRST transformation. We also propose a minimizing functional that could be used to construct a lattice version of our non-perturbative definition of the linear covariant gauge.

Non-perturbative BRST quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in Curci-Ferrari gauges

In this paper we address the issue of the non-perturbative quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the Curci-Ferrari gauge. In particular, we construct a Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action for this gauge which takes into account the presence of gauge copies as well as the dynamical formation of dimension two condensates. This action enjoys a non-perturbative BRST symmetry recently proposed in \cite{Capri:2015ixa}. Finally, we give attention to the gluon propagator in different space-time dimensions.

Non-perturbative treatment of the linear covariant gauges by taking into account the Gribov copies

In this paper, a proposal for the restriction of the Euclidean functional integral to a region free of infinitesimal Gribov copies in linear covariant gauges is discussed. An effective action, akin to the Gribov-Zwanziger action of the Landau gauge, is obtained which implements the aforementioned restriction. Although originally non-local, this action can be cast in local form by introducing auxiliary fields. As in the case of the Landau gauge, dimension two condensates are generated at the quantum level, giving rise to a refinement of the action which is employed to obtain the tree-level gluon propagator in linear covariant gauges. A comparison of our results with those available from numerical lattice simulations is also provided.

Gribov ambiguities at the Landau -- maximal Abelian interpolating gauge

In a previous work, we presented a new method to account for the Gribov ambiguities in non-Abelian gauge theories. The method consists on the introduction of an extra constraint which directly eliminates the infinitesimal Gribov copies without the usual geometric approach. Such strategy allows to treat gauges with non-hermitian Faddeev-Popov operator. In this work, we apply this method to a gauge which interpolates among the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges. The result is a local and power counting renormalizable action, free of infinitesimal Gribov copies. Moreover, the interpolating tree-level gluon propagator is derived.

Renormalizability of Yang-Mills theory with Lorentz violation and gluon mass generation

We show that pure Yang-Mills theories with Lorentz violation are renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory. To do this, we employ the algebraic renormalization technique. Specifically, we control the breaking terms with a suitable set of external sources which, eventually, attain certain physical values. The Abelian case is also analyzed as a starting point. The main result is that the renormalizability of the usual Maxwell and Yang-Mills sectores are both left unchanged. Furthermore, in contrast to Lorentz violating QED, the odd CPT violation sector of Yang-Mills theories renormalizes independently. Moreover, the method induces, in a natural way, mass terms for the gauge field while the photon remains massless (at least n the sense of a Proca-like term). The entire analysis is carried out at the Landau gauge.

Induced gravity from gauge theories

We discuss the possibility of a class of gauge theories, in four Euclidean dimensions, to describe gravity at quantum level. The requirement is that, at low energies, these theories can be identified with gravity as a geometrodynamical theory. Specifically, we deal with de Sitter-type groups and show that a Riemann-Cartan first order gravity emerges. An analogy with quantum chromodynamics is also formulated. Under this analogy it is possible to associate a soft BRST breaking to a continuous deformation between both sectors of the theory, namely, ultraviolet and infrared. Moreover, instead of hadrons and glueballs, the physical observables are identified with the geometric properties of spacetime. Furthermore, Newton and cosmological constants can be determined from the dynamical content of the theory.

On the elimination of infinitesimal Gribov ambiguities in non-Abelian gauge theories

An alternative method to account for the Gribov ambiguities in gauge theories is presented. It is shown that, to eliminate Gribov ambiguities, at infinitesimal level, it is required to break the BRST symmetry in a soft manner. This can be done by introducing a suitable extra constraint that eliminates the infinitesimal Gribov copies. It is shown that the present approach is consistent with the well established known cases in the literature, i.e., the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges. The method is valid for gauges depending exclusively on the gauge field and is restricted to classical level. However, occasionally, we deal with quantum aspects of the technique, which are used to improve the results.

de Sitter gauge theories and induced gravities

Pure de Sitter, anti de Sitter, and orthogonal gauge theories in four-dimensional Euclidean spacetime are studied. It is shown that, if the theory is asymptotically free and a dynamical mass is generated, then an effective geometry may be induced and a gravity theory emerges. The asymptotic freedom and the running of the mass might account for an Inönü-Wigner contraction which induces a breaking of the gauge group to the Lorentz group, while the mass itself is responsible for the coset sector of the gauge field to be identified with the effective vierbein. Furthermore, the resulting local isometries are Lorentzian for the anti de Sitter group and Euclidean for the de Sitter and orthogonal groups.

Formal aspects of spin currents in material media

The relativistic generalization of the broken continuity equation that describes spin currents is exploited in general material media. The field theoretical techniques for the usual U(1) gauge theory with fermions in material media is employed. The spin current equations are obtained from the study of the symmetries of electrodynamics in material media. Moreover, we obtain the conditions that constrain the spin current to be conserved. One of the novel results is that the analogue spin current for the photon can be also defined. In the latter case, the conditions are useful constraints on the fields and the properties of the media.

Affine gauge theory of gravity and its reduction to the Riemann-Cartan geometry

We discuss a possible framework for the construction of a quantum gravity theory where the principles of QFT and general relativity can coexist harmonically. Moreover, in order to fix the correct gauge group of the theory we study the most general one, the affine group and its natural reduction to the orthogonal group. The price we pay for simplifying the geometry is the presence of matter fields associated with the nonmetric degrees of freedom of the original setup. The result is independent of the starting theory.

preprint2010arXiv

Aspects of nonmetricity in gravity theories

In this work, we show that a class of metric-affine gravities can be reduced to a Riemann-Cartan one. The reduction is based on the cancelation of the nonmetricity against the symmetric components of the spin connection. A heuristic proof, in the Einstein-Cartan formalism, is performed in the special case of diagonal unitary tangent metric tensor. The result is that the nonmetric degrees of freedom decouple from the geometry. Thus, from the point of view of isometries on the tangent manifold, the equivalence might be viewed as an isometry transition from the affine group to the Lorentz group, $A(d,\mathbb{R})\longmapsto SO(d)$. Furthermore, in this transition, depending on the form of the starting action, the nonmetricity degrees might present a dynamical matter field character, with no geometric interpretation in the Riemann-Cartan geometry.

On the topological reduction from the affine to the orthogonal gauge theory of gravity

Making use of the fibre bundle theory to describe metric-affine gauge theories of gravity we are able to show that metric-affine gauge theory can be reduced to the Riemann-Cartan one. The price we pay for simplifying the geometry is the presence of matter fields associated with the nonmetric degrees of freedom of the original setup. Also, a possible framework for the construction of a quantum gravity theory is developed along the text.

Gribov ambiguities in the maximal Abelian gauge

The effects of the Gribov copies on the gluon and ghost propagators are investigated in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. By following Gribov's original approach, extended to the maximal Abelian gauge, we are able to show that the diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the characteristic Gribov type behavior. The off-diagonal component is found to be of the Yukawa type, with a dynamical mass originating from the dimension two gluon condensate, which is also taken into account. Furthermore, the off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits infrared enhancement. Finally, we make a comparison with available lattice data.

preprint2006arXiv

The infrared behavior of the gluon and ghost propagators in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge

We report on some recent analytical results on the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge (MAG). This gauge is of particular interest for the dual superconductivity picture to explain color confinement. Two kinds of effects are taken into account: those arising from a treatment of Gribov copies in the MAG and those arising from a dynamical mass originating in a dimension two gluon condensate. The diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the typical Gribov-type behaviour, while the off-diagonal component is of the Yukawa type due to the dynamical mass. These results are in qualitative agreement with available lattice data on the gluon propagators. The off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits an infrared enhancement due to the Gribov restriction, while the diagonal one remains unaffected.

preprint2005arXiv

Off-diagonal mass generation for Yang-Mills theories in the maximal Abelian gauge

We investigate a dynamical mass generation mechanism for the off-diagonal gluons and ghosts in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories, quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. Such a mass can be seen as evidence for the Abelian dominance in that gauge. It originates from the condensation of a mixed gluon-ghost operator of mass dimension two, which lowers the vacuum energy. We construct an effective potential for this operator by a combined use of the local composite operators technique with algebraic renormalization and we discuss the gauge parameter independence of the results. We also show that it is possible to connect the vacuum energy, due to the mass dimension two condensate discussed here, with the non-trivial vacuum energy originating from the condensate <A^2>, which has attracted much attention in the Landau gauge.

Bosonization and Duality Aspects in Superfluids and Superconductors

The bosonization and duality rules in three-dimensions are applied to analyze some features of superfluids and superconductors. The energy of an ensemble of vortices in a superfluid is recovered by means of a kind of bound which, to some extent, shares similarity with the Bogomol'nyi bound. In the case of superconductors, after recasting the partition function in the form of a pure effective gauge theory, the existence of finite energy vortex solutions is discussed
