Cat states and violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality in relativistic Quantum Field Theory

A cat state localized in the right Rindler wedge is employed to study the violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality in a relativistic scalar free Quantum Field Theory. By means of the bounded Hermitian operator $sign(φ(f))$, where $φ(f)$ stands for the smeared scalar field, it turns out that the Bell-CHSH correlator can be evaluated in closed analytic form in terms of the imaginary error function. Being the superposition of two coherent states, cat states allow for the existence of interference terms which give rise to a violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality. As such, the present setup can be considered as an explicit realization of the results obtained by Summers-Werner.

Study of the renormalization of BRST invariant local composite operators in the $U(1)$ Higgs model

The renormalization properties of two local BRST invariant composite operators, $(O,V_μ)$, corresponding respectively to the gauge invariant description of the Higgs particle and of the massive gauge vector boson, are scrutinized in the $U(1)$ Higgs model by means of the algebraic renormalization setup. Their renormalization $Z$'s factors are explicitly evaluated at one-loop order in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme by taking into due account the mixing with other gauge invariant operators. In particular, it turns out that the operator $V_μ$ mixes with the gauge invariant quantity $\partial_νF_{μν}$, which has the same quantum numbers, giving rise to a $2 \times 2$ mixing matrix. Moreover, two additional powerful Ward identities exist which enable us to determine the whole set of $Z$'s factors entering the $2 \times 2$ mixing matrix as well as the $Z$ factor of the operator $O$ in a purely algebraic way. An explicit check of these Ward identities is provided. The final setup obtained allows for computing perturbatively the full renormalized result for any $n$-point correlation function of the scalar and vector composite operators.

A local and BRST-invariant Yang-Mills theory within the Gribov horizon

We present a local setup for the recently introduced BRST-invariant formulation of Yang-Mills theories for linear covariant gauges that takes into account the existence of gauge copies à la Gribov and Zwanziger. Through the convenient use of auxiliary fields, including one of the Stueckelberg type, it is shown that both the action and the associated nilpotent BRST operator can be put in local form. Direct consequences of this fully local and BRST-symmetric framework are drawn from its Ward identities: (i) an exact prediction for the longitudinal part of the gluon propagator in linear covariant gauges that is compatible with recent lattice results and (ii) a proof of the gauge-parameter independence of all correlation functions of local BRST-invariant operators.

A local and renormalizable framework for the gauge-invariant operator $A^2_{\min}$ in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in linear covariant gauges

We address the issue of the renormalizability of the gauge-invariant non-local dimension-two operator $A^2_{\rm min}$, whose minimization is defined along the gauge orbit. Despite its non-local character, we show that the operator $A^2_{\rm min}$ can be cast in local form through the introduction of an auxiliary Stueckelberg field. The localization procedure gives rise to an unconventional kind of Stueckelberg-type action which turns out to be renormalizable to all orders of perturbation theory. In particular, as a consequence of its gauge invariance, the anomalous dimension of the operator $A^2_{\rm min}$ turns out to be independent from the gauge parameter $α$ entering the gauge-fixing condition, being thus given by the anomalous dimension of the operator $A^2$ in the Landau gauge.

Confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in a non-perturbative renormalizable quark model

Inspired by the construction of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge, we introduce a quark model exhibiting both confinement and chiral symmetry aspects. An important feature is the incorporation of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in a renormalizable fashion. The quark propagator in the condensed vacuum turns out to be of a confining type. Besides a real pole, it exhibits complex conjugate poles. The resulting spectral form is explicitly shown to violate positivity, indicative of its unphysical character. Moreover, the ensuing quark mass function fits well to existing lattice data. To further validate the physical nature of the model, we identify a massless pseudoscalar (i.e. a pion) in the chiral limit and present estimates for the rho meson mass and decay constant.

More on the non-perturbative Gribov-Zwanziger quantization of linear covariant gauges

In this paper, we discuss the gluon propagator in the linear covariant gauges in $D=2,3,4$ Euclidean dimensions. Non-perturbative effects are taken into account via the so-called Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework. We point out that, as in the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges, for $D=3,4$, the gluon propagator displays a massive (decoupling) behaviour, while for $D=2$, a scaling one emerges. All results are discussed in a setup that respects the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry, through a recently introduced non-perturbative BRST transformation. We also propose a minimizing functional that could be used to construct a lattice version of our non-perturbative definition of the linear covariant gauge.

Non-perturbative BRST quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in Curci-Ferrari gauges

In this paper we address the issue of the non-perturbative quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the Curci-Ferrari gauge. In particular, we construct a Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action for this gauge which takes into account the presence of gauge copies as well as the dynamical formation of dimension two condensates. This action enjoys a non-perturbative BRST symmetry recently proposed in \cite{Capri:2015ixa}. Finally, we give attention to the gluon propagator in different space-time dimensions.

On the gauge-invariant operator $A^2_{\min}$ in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories

We review our recent work on the gauge-invariant non-local dimension-two operator $A^2_{\rm min}$, whose minimization is defined along the gauge orbit. Albeit non-local, the operator $A^2_{\rm min}$ can be cast in local form through the introduction of an auxiliary Stueckelberg field. The whole procedure results into a local action which turns out to be renormalizable to all orders.

Remarks on the effects of the Gribov copies on the infrared behavior of higher dimensional Yang-Mills theory

In this paper, we discuss non-perturbative infrared features of Yang-Mills theory in Euclidean space-time dimensions greater than four in the Landau gauge and within the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework, which enables us to take into account the existence of gauge copies by restricting the domain of integration in the path integral to the Gribov region. Evidences for a decoupling/massive solution for the gluon propagator in higher dimensions are provided. This behavior is strengthened the bigger the dimension is. Further, we show that, by a dimensional reduction of the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action from five to four dimensions, a non-perturbative coupling between the inverse of the Faddeev-Popov operator and the scalar field corresponding to the fifth component of the gauge field naturally arises, being in agreement with the recently proposed mechanism \cite{Capri:2014bsa} to generalize the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger construction to the matter sector.

Confinement interpretation in a Yang-Mills + Higgs theory when considering Gribov's ambiguity

This work presents concisely the results obtained from the analysis of the two-point function of the gauge field in the $SU(2)$ and $SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge theories, in the Landau gauge, coupled to a scalar Higgs field in the fundamental or adjoint representation. Non-perturbative effects are considered by taking into account the Gribov ambiguity. In general, in both Yang-Mills models the gluon propagator has non-trivial contributions of physical and non-physical modes, which clearly depends on the group representation of the Higgs field. These results were presented during the Fourth Winter Workshop on Non-perturbative Quantum Field Theory, which took place in Sophia-Antipolis - France.

Dimension two condensates in the Gribov-Zwanziger theory in the Coulomb gauge

We investigate the dimension two condensate $< {\bar ϕ}^{ab}_i ϕ^{ab}_i -{\bar ω}^{ab}_i ω^{ab}_i >$ within the Gribov-Zwanziger approach to Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the Coulomb gauge, in both 3 and 4 dimensions. An explicit calculation shows that, at the first order, the condensate $< {\bar ϕ}^{ab}_i ϕ^{ab}_i -{\bar ω}^{ab}_i ω^{ab}_i >$ is plagued by a non-integrable IR divergence in 3D, while in 4D it exhibits a logarithmic UV divergence, being proportional to the Gribov parameter $γ^2$. These results indicate that in 3D the transverse spatial Coulomb gluon two-point correlation function exhibits a scaling behaviour, in agreement with Gribov's expression. In 4D, however, they suggest that, next to the scaling behaviour, a decoupling solution might emerge too.

Gribov horizon and non-perturbative BRST symmetry in the maximal Abelian gauge

The non-perturbative nilpotent exact BRST symmetry of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge constructed in [ arXiv:1506.06995 [hep-th]] is generalized to the case of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. The resulting diagonal gluon propagator is evaluating in dimensions D=4,3,2. In D=4,3 a decoupling type behavior is found in the infrared region, while in D=2 a scaling type behavior emerges.

Non-perturbative treatment of the linear covariant gauges by taking into account the Gribov copies

In this paper, a proposal for the restriction of the Euclidean functional integral to a region free of infinitesimal Gribov copies in linear covariant gauges is discussed. An effective action, akin to the Gribov-Zwanziger action of the Landau gauge, is obtained which implements the aforementioned restriction. Although originally non-local, this action can be cast in local form by introducing auxiliary fields. As in the case of the Landau gauge, dimension two condensates are generated at the quantum level, giving rise to a refinement of the action which is employed to obtain the tree-level gluon propagator in linear covariant gauges. A comparison of our results with those available from numerical lattice simulations is also provided.

On bounds and boundary conditions in the continuum Landau gauge

In this note, we consider the Landau gauge in the continuum formulation. Our purposes are twofold. Firstly, we try to work out the consequences of the recently derived Cucchieri-Mendes bounds on the inverse Faddeev-Popov operator at the level of the path integral quantization. Secondly, we give an explicit renormalizable prescription to implement the so-called Landau B-gauges as introduced by Maas.

On general ultraviolet properties of a class of confining propagators

We study the ultraviolet properties of theories whose fundamental fields display a confining, Gribov-type, propagator. These are propagators that exhibit complex poles and violate positivity, thus precluding a physical propagating particle interpretation. We show that the properties of this type of confining propagators do not change the ultraviolet behavior of the theory, in the sense that no new ultraviolet primitive divergences are generated, thus securing the renormalizability of these confining theories. We illustrate these properties by studying a variety of models, including bosonic and fermionic confined degrees of freedom. The more intricate case of Super Yang-Mills with ${\cal N} =1$ supersymmetries in the Wess-Zumino gauge is taken as example in order to prove these statements to all orders by means of the algebraic renormalization set up.

Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge in presence of scalar matter fields

We address the issue of the all order multiplicative renormalizability of SU(2) Yang-Mills theories quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge in presence of scalar matter fields. The non-linear character of the maximal Abelian gauge requires the introduction of quartic interaction terms in the Faddeev-Popov ghosts, a well known feature of this gauge. We show that, when scalar matter fields are introduced, a second quartic interaction term between scalar fields and Faddeev-Popov ghosts naturally arises. A BRST invariant action accounting for those quartic interaction terms is identified and proven to be multiplicative renormalizable to all orders by means of the algebraic renormalization procedure.

Implementing the Gribov-Zwanziger framework in N=1 Super Yang-Mills in the Landau gauge

The Gribov-Zwanziger framework accounting for the existence of Gribov copies is extended to N=1 Super Yang--Mills theories quantized in the Landau gauge. We show that the restriction of the domain of integration in the Euclidean functional integral to the first Gribov horizon can be implemented in a way to recover non-perturbative features of N=1 Super Yang--Mills theories, namely: the existence of the gluino condensate as well as the vanishing of the vacuum energy.

On the irrelevance of the Gribov issue in N=4 Super Yang-Mills in the Landau gauge

The issue of the Gribov copies is discussed in Euclidean N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory quantized in the Landau gauge. As a consequence of the absence of a renormalization group invariant scale, it turns out that it is not possible to attach a dynamical meaning to the Gribov parameter. This implies that, in N=4 Super Yang-Mills, there is no need for the restriction of the domain of integration in the functional integral to the Gribov region, and no non-perturbative dynamical scale is generated. This result is in agreement with the absence of a confining phase observed from the Coulomb behaviour of the Wilson loop evaluated through the AdS/CFT correspondence. The non-renormalization theorem of the gluon-ghost-antighost vertex of the Landau gauge is also explicitly checked till three loops.

Padé approximation and glueball mass estimates in 3d and 4d with N_c = 2,3 colors

A Padé approximation approach, rooted in an infrared moment technique, is employed to provide mass estimates for various glueball states in pure gauge theories. The main input in this analysis are theoretically well-motivated fits to lattice gluon propagator data, which are by now available for both SU(2) and SU(3) in 3 and 4 space-time dimensions. We construct appropriate gauge invariant and Lorentz covariant operators in the (pseudo)scalar and (pseudo)tensor sector. Our estimates compare reasonably well with a variety of lattice sources directly aimed at extracting glueball masses.

Properties of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the Landau gauge, matter confinement and soft BRST breaking

In light of the development of the Gribov issue for pure Euclidean gauge theories and of the recent lattice measurement of soft breaking of the BRST invariance in Yang-Mills theories in the Landau gauge, we consider non-perturbative features in the gauge-interacting matter sector and their relation with general properties of the Faddeev-Popov operator. A signature for BRST breaking in the matter sector is proposed and a local and renormalizable framework is constructed, accommodating this signature and predicting non-perturbative matter propagators that are consistent with available lattice data for adjoint scalars and quarks.

Renormalization aspects of N=1 Super Yang-Mills theory in the Wess-Zumino gauge

The renormalization of N=1 Super Yang-Mills theory is analysed in the Wess-Zumino gauge, employing the Landau condition. An all orders proof of the renormalizability of the theory is given by means of the Algebraic Renormalization procedure. Only three renormalization constants are needed, which can be identified with the coupling constant, gauge field and gluino renormalization. The non-renormalization theorem of the gluon-ghost-antighost vertex in the Landau gauge is shown to remain valid in N=1 Super Yang-Mills. Moreover, due to the non-linear realization of the supersymmetry in the Wess-Zumino gauge, the renormalization factor of the gauge field turns out to be different from that of the gluino. These features are explicitly checked through a three loop calculation.

The (IR-)relevance of the Gribov ambiguity in SU(2) x U(1) gauge theories with fundamental Higgs matter

It is well accepted that dealing with the Gribov ambiguity has a major impact on correlation functions in gauge-fixed Yang-Mills theories, in particular in the low momentum regime where standard perturbation theory based on the Faddeev-Popov approach fails. Recent results, derived from functional tools (Dyson-Schwinger equations or exact RG) or the effective Gribov-Zwanziger action method, pointed towards e.g. gauge boson correlation functions that are not compatible with the properties of observable degrees of freedom. Although such an observation is a welcome feature for gauge theories exhibiting confinement, it would be a discomfort for gauge theories supplemented with Higgs fields, cfr. the experimental success of the electroweak model based on a SU(2) x U(1) gauge group. The purpose of this short note is to assure that the effective action resolution to the Gribov ambiguity reduces to the standard Faddeev-Popov method in the perturbative regime of sufficiently small coupling/large Higgs condensate, thereby not compromising the physical particle spectrum of massive gauge bosons and a massless photon for the SU(2) x U(1) gauge-Higgs model. The closer the theory gets to the limit of vanishing Higgs condensate, the more the Gribov problem resurfaces with all its consequences. We give some speculations w.r.t. the Fradkin-Shenker insights about the phase diagram.

A study of the Higgs and confining phases in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theories in 3d by taking into account the Gribov horizon

We study SU(2) three-dimensional Yang-Mills theories in presence of Higgs fields in the light of the Gribov phenomenon. By restricting the domain of integration in the functional integral to the first Gribov horizon, we are able to discuss a kind of transition between the Higgs and the confining phase in a semi-classical approximation. Both adjoint and fundamental representation for the Higgs field are considered, leading to a different phase structure.

An all-order proof of the equivalence between Gribov's no-pole and Zwanziger's horizon conditions

The quantization of non-Abelian gauge theories is known to be plagued by Gribov copies. Typical examples are the copies related to zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator, which give rise to singularities in the ghost propagator. In this work we present an exact and compact expression for the ghost propagator as a function of external gauge fields, in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge. It is shown, to all orders, that the condition for the ghost propagator not to have a pole, the so-called Gribov's no-pole condition, can be implemented by demanding a nonvanishing expectation value for a functional of the gauge fields that turns out to be Zwanziger's horizon function. The action allowing to implement this condition is the Gribov-Zwanziger action. This establishes in a precise way the equivalence between Gribov's no-pole condition and Zwanziger's horizon condition.

Physical spectrum from confined excitations in a Yang-Mills-inspired toy model

We study a toy model for an interacting scalar field theory in which the fundamental excitations are confined in the sense of having unphysical, positivity-violating propagators, a fact tracing back to a decomposition of these in propagators with complex conjugate mass poles (the so-called $i$-particles). Similar two-point functions show up in certain approaches to gluon or quark propagators in Yang-Mills gauge theories. We investigate the spectrum of our model and show that suitable composite operators may be constructed having a well-defined Källén-Lehmann spectral representation, thus allowing for a particle interpretation. These physical excitations would correspond to the "mesons" of the model, the latter being bound states of two unphysical $i$-particles. The meson mass is explicitly estimated from the pole emerging in a resummed class of diagrams. The main purpose of this paper is thus to explicitly verify how a real mass pole can and does emerge out of constituent $i$-particles that have complex masses.

Semiclassical analysis of the phases of 4d SU(2) Higgs gauge systems with cutoff at the Gribov horizon

We present an analytical study of continuum 4d SU(2) gauge Higgs models with a single Higgs field with fixed length in either the fundamental or adjoint representation. We aim at analytically probing the renowned predictions of Fradkin & Shenker on the phase diagram in terms of confinement versus Higgs behaviour, obtained for the lattice version of the model. We work in the Landau version of the 't Hooft R_ξgauges in which case we can access potential nonperturbative physics related to the existence of the Gribov copies. In the fundamental case, we clearly show that in the perturbative regime of small gauge coupling constant g and large Higgs vacuum expectation value v, there is a Higgs phase with Yukawa gauge boson propagators without Gribov effects. For a small value of the Higgs vev v and/or large g, we enter a region with Gribov type propagators that have no physical particle interpretation: the gauge bosons are as such confined. The transition between both behaviours is found to be continuous. In the adjoint case, we find evidence of a more drastic transition between the different behaviours for the propagator of the off-diagonal gauge bosons, whereas the "photon", i.e. the diagonal component of the gauge field, displays a propagator of the Gribov type. In the limit of infinite Higgs condensate, we show that a massless photon is recovered. We compare our findings with those of Fradkin & Shenker as well as with more recent numerical lattice simulations of the fundamental Higgs model. We also carefully discuss in which region of the parameter space (v,g) our approximations are trustworthy.

Study of the zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the maximal Abelian gauge

A study of the zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the maximal Abelian gauge is presented in the case of the gauge group SU(2) and for different Euclidean space-time dimensions. Explicit examples of classes of normalizable zero modes and corresponding gauge field configurations are constructed by taking into account two boundary conditions, namely: i) the finite Euclidean Yang-Mills action, ii) the finite Hilbert norm.

SU(2) x U(1) Yang-Mills theories in 3d with Higgs field and Gribov ambiguity

We study the structure of the gauge propagators of a 3d version of the electroweak interaction in terms of the Higgs vacuum expectation value nu, of the non-Abelian gauge coupling g, and of the Abelian gauge coupling g', when nonperturbative effects related to the non-Abelian gauge fixing are introduced by means of an adapted path integral measure. In the perturbative regime of small non-Abelian coupling g and sufficiently large nu, the well-known standard Z and W propagators are recovered, together with a massless photon. In general, depending on the relative magnitudes of g, g' and nu, we uncover a quite different propagator structure. In a later stage of research, the results here derived can be used to study the associated phase diagram in more depth.

A study of the lightest glueball states in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge

A qualitative study of the lightest glueball states in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge is presented. The analysis is done by generalizing to the maximal Abelian gauge the so-called replica model, already successfully introduced in the Landau gauge. As it will be shown, the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from the replica model are of the same type of those already introduced in Phys. Rev. D77, 105023 (2008) [arXiv:0801.0566], whose behavior turns out to be in agreement with that available from the lattice data on the maximal Abelian gauge. The model turns out to be renormalizable to all orders, while enabling us to introduce gauge invariant composite operators for the study of the lightest glueballs $J^{PC}=0^{++}$, $2^{++}$ and $0^{-+}$. The spectral representation for the correlation functions of these operators are evaluated to the first order, and the corresponding spectral densities are shown to be positive. Under the assumption of Abelian dominance, it turns out that the hierarchy for the masses of the lightest glueballs in the maximal Abelian gauge is in agreement with that already obtained in the Landau gauge, a feature which provides evidence for the gauge independence of the spectrum of the theory.

A few remarks on the zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges

The construction outlined by Henyey is employed to provide examples of normalizable zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in d=3 dimensions. The corresponding gauge configurations have all finite norm ||A||^2 < \infty. In particular, in the case of the Landau gauge, the explicit construction of an infinite class of normalizable zero modes with finite norm ||A||^2 is provided.

Glueball masses from an infrared moment problem and nonperturbative Landau gauge

We set up an infrared-based moment problem to obtain estimates of the masses of the scalar, pseudoscalar and tensor glueballs in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories using the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) version of the Landau gauge, which takes into account nonperturbative physics related to gauge copies. Employing lattice input for the mass scales of the RGZ gluon propagator, the lowest order moment problem approximation gives the values m_{0++}\approx 1.96 GeV, m_{2++} \approx 2.04 GeV and m_{0-+}\approx 2.19 GeV in the SU(3) case, all within a 20% range of the corresponding lattice values. We also recover the mass hierarchy m_{0++}<m_{2++}<m_{0-+}.

Renormalizability of the linearly broken formulation of the BRST symmetry in presence of the Gribov horizon in Landau gauge Euclidean Yang-Mills theories

In previous work arXiv:1009.4135 we have shown that the soft breaking of the BRST symmetry arising within the Gribov-Zwanziger framework can be converted into a linear breaking, while preserving the nilpotency of the BRST operator. Due to its compatibility with the Quantum Action Principle, the linearly broken BRST symmetry directly translates into a set of Slavnov-Taylor identities. We show that these identities guarantee the multiplicative renormalizability of both Gribov-Zwanziger and Refined Gribov-Zwanziger theories to all orders. The known property that only two renormalization factors are needed is recovered. The non-renormalization theorem of the gluon-ghost-antighost vertex as well as the renormalization factor of the Gribov parameter are derived within the linearly broken formulation.

The dynamical origin of the refinement of the Gribov-Zwanziger theory

In recent years, the Gribov-Zwanziger action was refined by taking into account certain dimension 2 condensates. In this fashion, one succeeded in bringing the gluon and the ghost propagator obtained from the GZ model in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the lattice data. In this paper, we shall elaborate further on this aspect. First, we shall show that more dimension 2 condensates can be taken into account than considered so far and, in addition, we shall give firm evidence that these condensates are in fact present by discussing the effective potential. It follows thus that the Gribov-Zwanziger action dynamically transforms itself into the refined version, thereby showing that the continuum nonperturbative Landau gauge fixing, as implemented by the Gribov-Zwanziger approach, is consistent with lattice simulations.

A remark on the BRST symmetry in the Gribov-Zwanziger theory

We show that the soft breaking of the BRST symmetry arising in the Gribov-Zwanziger theory can be converted into a linear breaking upon introduction of a set of BRST quartets of auxiliary fields. Due to its compatibility with the Quantum Action Principle, the linearly broken BRST symmetry can be directly converted into a suitable set of useful Slavnov-Taylor identities. As a consequence, it turns out that the renormalization aspects of the Gribov-Zwanziger theory can be addressed by means of the cohomology of a nilpotent local operator

Constructing local composite operators for glueball states from a confining Gribov propagator

The construction of BRST invariant local operators with the quantum numbers of the lightest glueball states, $J^{PC}= 0^{++}, 2^{++}, 0^{-+}$, is worked out by making use of an Euclidean confining renormalizable gauge theory. The correlation functions of these operators are evaluated by employing a confining gluon propagator of the Gribov type and shown to display a spectral representation with positive spectral densities. An attempt to provide a first qualitative analysis of the ratios of the masses of the lightest glueballs is also discussed

From propagators to glueballs in the Gribov-Zwanziger framework

Over the last years, lattice calculations in pure Yang-Mills gauge theory seem to have come more or less to a consensus. The ghost propagator is not enhanced and the gluon propagator is positivity violating, infrared suppressed and non-vanishing at zero momentum. From an analytical point of view, several groups are agreeing with these results. Among them, the refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) framework also accommodates for these results. The question which rises next is, if our models hold the right form for the propagators, how to extract information on the real physical observables, i.e. the glueballs? How do the operators which represent glueballs look like? We review the current status of this matter within the RGZ framework.

From unphysical gluon and ghost propagators to physical glueball propagators (in the Gribov-Zwanziger picture): a not so trivial task?

During recent years, a good agreement was found between the analytical derivation and the numerical simulation of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators. We mention the Schwinger-Dyson and Gribov-Zwanziger formalism for the analytical work. Although the agreement between several approaches is nice, these propagators do not correspond to the relevant physical degrees of freedom. In the case of pure gauge theories, one should start to study the glueball correlators. We shall try to explain why it looks like a hard challenge to go from the unphysical to the physical propagators in the case of the Gribov-Zwanziger theory (but similar conclusions might hold for other approaches giving similar propagators).

Gribov horizon and BRST symmetry: a pathway to confinement

We summarize the construction of the Gribov-Zwanziger action and how it leads to a scenario which explains the confinement of gluons, in the sense that the elementary gluon excitations violate positivity. Then we address the question of how one can construct operators within this picture whose one-loop correlation functions have the correct analytic properties in order to correspond to physical excitations. For this we introduce the concept of i-particles.

Gribov horizon and i-particles: about a toy model and the construction of physical operators

Restricting the functional integral to the Gribov region $Ω$ leads to a deep modification of the behavior of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the infrared region. For example, a gluon propagator of the Gribov type, $\frac{k^2}{k^4+{\hat γ}^4}$, can be viewed as a propagating pair of unphysical modes, called here $i$-particles, with complex masses $\pm i{\hat γ}^2$. From this viewpoint, gluons are unphysical and one can see them as being confined. We introduce a simple toy model describing how a suitable set of composite operators can be constructed out of $i$-particles whose correlation functions exhibit only real branch cuts, with associated positive spectral density. These composite operators can thus be called physical and are the toy analogy of glueballs in the Gribov-Zwanziger theory.

More on the renormalization of the horizon function of the Gribov-Zwanziger action and the Kugo-Ojima Green function(s)

In this paper we provide strong evidence that there is no ambiguity in the choice of the horizon function underlying the Gribov-Zwanziger action. We show that there is only one correct possibility which is determined by the requirement of multiplicative renormalizability. As a consequence, this means that relations derived from other horizon functions cannot be given a consistent interpretation in terms of a local and renormalizable quantum field theory. In addition, we also discuss that the Kugo-Ojima functions $u(p^2)$ and $w(p^2)$ can only be defined after renormalization of the underlying Green function(s).

Study of the properties of the Gribov region in SU(N) Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the maximal Abelian gauge

In this paper we address the issue of the Gribov copies in SU(N), N>2, Euclidean Yang-Mills theories quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. A few properties of the Gribov region in this gauge are established. Similarly to the case of SU(2), the Gribov region turns out to be convex, bounded along the off-diagonals directions in field space, and unbounded along the diagonal ones. The implementation of the restriction to the Gribov region in the functional integral is discussed through the introduction of the horizon function, whose construction will be outlined in detail. The influence of this restriction on the behavior of the gluon and ghost propagators of the theory is also investigated together with a set of dimension two condensates.

A candidate for the scalar glueball operator within the Gribov-Zwanziger framework

This proceeding gives an overview of the renormalization of $F^2_{μν}$ using the Faddeev-Popov action and the more complicate Gribov-Zwanziger action, which deals with Gribov copies. We show that using the Faddeev-Popov action, $F^2_{μν}$ mixes with other $d=4$ operators. However, due to the BRST invariance of the action, this mixing is not relevant at the level of the correlator, $\Braket {F^2_{μν}(x) F^2_{αβ}(y)}$. In contrast, when turning to the Gribov-Zwanziger action, the mixing of $F^2_{μν}$ with other $d=4$ operator does have consequences at the level of the correlator. This is due to the breaking of the BRST. We then present a possible candidate for a physical operator in the Gribov-Zwanziger framework.

Aspects of the Gribov-Zwanziger framework

The existence of gauge (Gribov) copies disturbs the usual Faddeev-Popov quantization procedure in the Landau gauge. It is a very hard job to treat these in the continuum, even in a partial manner. A decent way to do so was worked out by Gribov, and later on by Zwanziger. The final point was a renormalizable action (the Gribov-Zwanziger action), implementing the restriction of the path integration to the so-called Gribov region, which is free of a subset of gauge copies, but not of all copies. Till recently, everybody agreed upon the fact that the restriction to the Gribov region implied a infrared enhanced ghost, and vanishing zero momentum gluon propagator. We discuss how the Gribov-Zwanziger action naturally leads to the existence of vacuum condensates of dimension two. As it is very common, such condensates can seriously alter the dynamics. In particular, the Gribov-Zwanziger condensates give rise to a gluon propagator with a finite but nonvanishing zero momentum limit, and reconstitute a nonenhanced ghost. We call this the refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework. The predictions are in qualitative agreement with most recent lattice simulations, and certain solutions of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. A crucial feature of the Gribov-Zwanziger framework is the soft (controllable) breaking of the BRST symmetry. We also point out that imposing the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion on the Faddeev-Popov theory as a boundary condition from the beginning leads to the same partition function as of Gribov-Zwanziger, with associated BRST symmetry breaking. This clouds the interpretation of the Kugo-Ojima criterion in se.

Gribov ambiguities in the maximal Abelian gauge

The effects of the Gribov copies on the gluon and ghost propagators are investigated in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. By following Gribov's original approach, extended to the maximal Abelian gauge, we are able to show that the diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the characteristic Gribov type behavior. The off-diagonal component is found to be of the Yukawa type, with a dynamical mass originating from the dimension two gluon condensate, which is also taken into account. Furthermore, the off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits infrared enhancement. Finally, we make a comparison with available lattice data.

Remarks on the dynamical mass generation in confining Yang-Mills theories

The dynamical mass generation for gluons is discussed in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories supplemented with a renormalizable mass term. The mass parameter is not free, being determined in a self-consistent way through a gap equation which obeys the renormalization group. The example of the Landau gauge is worked out explicitly at one loop order. A few remarks on the issue of the unitarity are provided.

The infrared behavior of the gluon and ghost propagators in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge

We report on some recent analytical results on the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge (MAG). This gauge is of particular interest for the dual superconductivity picture to explain color confinement. Two kinds of effects are taken into account: those arising from a treatment of Gribov copies in the MAG and those arising from a dynamical mass originating in a dimension two gluon condensate. The diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the typical Gribov-type behaviour, while the off-diagonal component is of the Yukawa type due to the dynamical mass. These results are in qualitative agreement with available lattice data on the gluon propagators. The off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits an infrared enhancement due to the Gribov restriction, while the diagonal one remains unaffected.

Off-diagonal mass generation for Yang-Mills theories in the maximal Abelian gauge

We investigate a dynamical mass generation mechanism for the off-diagonal gluons and ghosts in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories, quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. Such a mass can be seen as evidence for the Abelian dominance in that gauge. It originates from the condensation of a mixed gluon-ghost operator of mass dimension two, which lowers the vacuum energy. We construct an effective potential for this operator by a combined use of the local composite operators technique with algebraic renormalization and we discuss the gauge parameter independence of the results. We also show that it is possible to connect the vacuum energy, due to the mass dimension two condensate discussed here, with the non-trivial vacuum energy originating from the condensate <A^2>, which has attracted much attention in the Landau gauge.

Bosonization and Duality Aspects in Superfluids and Superconductors

The bosonization and duality rules in three-dimensions are applied to analyze some features of superfluids and superconductors. The energy of an ensemble of vortices in a superfluid is recovered by means of a kind of bound which, to some extent, shares similarity with the Bogomol'nyi bound. In the case of superconductors, after recasting the partition function in the form of a pure effective gauge theory, the existence of finite energy vortex solutions is discussed

The Diagonal Ghost Equation Ward Identity for Yang-Mills Theories in the Maximal Abelian Gauge

A BRST perturbative analysis of SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in a class of maximal Abelian gauges is presented. We point out the existence of a new nonintegrated renormalizable Ward identity which allows to control the dependence of the theory from the diagonal ghosts. This identity, called the diagonal ghost equation, plays a crucial role for the stability of the model under radiative corrections implying, in particular, the vanishing of the anomalous dimension of the diagonal ghosts. Moreover, the Ward identity corresponding to the Abelian Cartan subgroup is easily derived from the diagonal ghost equation. Finally, a simple proof of the fact that the beta function of the gauge coupling can be obtained from the vacuum polarization tensor with diagonal gauge fields as external legs is given. A possible mechanism for the decoupling of the diagonal ghosts at low energy is also suggested.

Perturbative Beta Function of N=2 Super Yang-Mills Theories

An algebraic proof of the nonrenormalization theorem for the perturbative beta function of the coupling constant of N=2 Super Yang-Mills theory is provided. The proof relies on a fundamental relationship between the N=2 Yang-Mills action and the local gauge invariant polynomial Tr phi^2, phi(x) being the scalar field of the N=2 vector gauge multiplet. The nonrenormalization theorem for the beta function follows from the vanishing of the anomalous dimension of Tr phi^2.

The action of N=4 Super Yang-Mills from a chiral primary operator

Using the Vafa-Witten twisted version of N=4 Super Yang-Mills a subset of the supercharges actually relevant for the nonrenormalization properties of the theory is identified. In particular, a relationship between the gauge-fixed action and the chiral primary operator tr(ϕ)^2 is worked out. This result can be understood as an off-shell extension of the reduction formula introduced by Intriligator.

Algebraic Characterization of Vector Supersymmetry in Topological Field Theories

An algebraic cohomological characterization of a class of linearly broken Ward identities is provided. The examples of the topological vector supersymmetry and of the Landau ghost equation are discussed in detail. The existence of such a linearly broken Ward identities turns out to be related to BRST exact antifield dependent cocycles with negative ghost number.

BRS Cohomology of Zero Curvature Systems I. The Complete Ladder Case

We present here the zero curvature formulation for a wide class of field theory models. This formalism, which relies on the existence of an operator $\d$ which decomposes the exterior space-time derivative as a BRS commutator, turns out to be particularly useful in order to solve the Wess-Zumino consistency condition. The examples of the topological theories and of the $B$-$C$ string ghost system are considered in detail.
