Half-integer anomalous currents in 2D materials from a QFT viewpoint

Charge carriers in Dirac/Weyl semi-metals exhibit a relativistic-like behavior. In this work we propose a novel type of intrinsic half-integer Quantum Hall effect in 2D materials, thereby also offering a topological protection mechanism for the current. Its existence is rooted in the 2D parity anomaly, without any need for a perpendicular magnetic field. We conjecture that it may occur in disturbed honeycomb lattices where both spin degeneracy and time reversal symmetry are broken. These configurations harbor two distinct gap-opening mechanisms that, when occurring simultaneously, drive slightly different gaps in each valley, causing a net anomalous conductivity when the chemical potential is tuned to be between the distinct gaps. Some examples of promising material setups that fulfill the prerequisites of our proposal are also listed to motivate looking for the effect at the numerical and experimental level.

Infinitesimal Gribov copies in gauge-fixed topological Yang-Mills theories

We study the Gribov problem in four-dimensional topological Yang-Mills theories following the Baulieu-Singer approach in the (anti-)self-dual Landau gauges. This is a gauge-fixed approach that allows to recover the topological spectrum, as first constructed by Witten, by means of an equivariant (or constrained) BRST cohomology. As standard gauge-fixed Yang-Mills theories suffer from the gauge copy (Gribov) ambiguity, one might wonder if and how this has repercussions for this analysis. The resolution of the small (infinitesimal) gauge copies, in general, affects the dynamics of the underlying theory. In particular, treating the Gribov problem for the standard Landau gauge condition in non-topological Yang-Mills theories strongly affects the dynamics of the theory in the infrared. In the current paper, although the theory is investigated with the same gauge condition, the effects of the copies turn out to be completely different. In other words: in both cases, the copies are there, but the effects are very different. As suggested by the tree-level exactness of the topological model in this gauge choice, the Gribov copies are shown to be inoffensive at the quantum level. To be more precise, following Gribov, we discuss the path integral restriction to the Gribov horizon. The associated gap equation, which fixes the so-called Gribov parameter, is however shown to only possess a trivial solution, making the restriction obsolete. We relate this to the absence of radiative corrections in both gauge and ghost sectors. We give further evidence by employing the renormalization group which shows that, for this kind of topological model, the gap equation indeed forbids the introduction of a massive Gribov parameter.

A local and BRST-invariant Yang-Mills theory within the Gribov horizon

We present a local setup for the recently introduced BRST-invariant formulation of Yang-Mills theories for linear covariant gauges that takes into account the existence of gauge copies à la Gribov and Zwanziger. Through the convenient use of auxiliary fields, including one of the Stueckelberg type, it is shown that both the action and the associated nilpotent BRST operator can be put in local form. Direct consequences of this fully local and BRST-symmetric framework are drawn from its Ward identities: (i) an exact prediction for the longitudinal part of the gluon propagator in linear covariant gauges that is compatible with recent lattice results and (ii) a proof of the gauge-parameter independence of all correlation functions of local BRST-invariant operators.

Confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in a non-perturbative renormalizable quark model

Inspired by the construction of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge, we introduce a quark model exhibiting both confinement and chiral symmetry aspects. An important feature is the incorporation of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in a renormalizable fashion. The quark propagator in the condensed vacuum turns out to be of a confining type. Besides a real pole, it exhibits complex conjugate poles. The resulting spectral form is explicitly shown to violate positivity, indicative of its unphysical character. Moreover, the ensuing quark mass function fits well to existing lattice data. To further validate the physical nature of the model, we identify a massless pseudoscalar (i.e. a pion) in the chiral limit and present estimates for the rho meson mass and decay constant.

More on the non-perturbative Gribov-Zwanziger quantization of linear covariant gauges

In this paper, we discuss the gluon propagator in the linear covariant gauges in $D=2,3,4$ Euclidean dimensions. Non-perturbative effects are taken into account via the so-called Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework. We point out that, as in the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges, for $D=3,4$, the gluon propagator displays a massive (decoupling) behaviour, while for $D=2$, a scaling one emerges. All results are discussed in a setup that respects the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry, through a recently introduced non-perturbative BRST transformation. We also propose a minimizing functional that could be used to construct a lattice version of our non-perturbative definition of the linear covariant gauge.

No inverse magnetic catalysis in the QCD hard and soft wall models

In this paper, we study the influence of an external magnetic field in holographic QCD models where the backreaction is modeled in via an appropriate choice of the background metric. We add a phenomenological soft wall dilaton to incorporate better IR behavior (confinement). Elaborating on previous studies conducted by [JHEP 1505 (2015) 121], we first discuss the Hawking-Page transition, the dual of the deconfinement transition, as a function of the magnetic field. We confirm that the critical deconfinement temperature can drop with the magnetic field. Secondly, we study the quark condensate holographically as a function of the applied magnetic field and demonstrate that this model does not exhibit inverse magnetic catalysis at the level of the chiral transition. The quest for a holographic QCD model that qualitatively describes the inverse magnetic catalysis at finite temperature is thus still open. Throughout this work, we pay special attention to the different holographic parameters and we attempt to fix them by making the link to genuine QCD as close as possible. This leads to several unanticipated and so far overlooked complications (such as the relevance of an additional length scale in the confined geometry) that we discuss in detail.

Confinement interpretation in a Yang-Mills + Higgs theory when considering Gribov's ambiguity

This work presents concisely the results obtained from the analysis of the two-point function of the gauge field in the $SU(2)$ and $SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge theories, in the Landau gauge, coupled to a scalar Higgs field in the fundamental or adjoint representation. Non-perturbative effects are considered by taking into account the Gribov ambiguity. In general, in both Yang-Mills models the gluon propagator has non-trivial contributions of physical and non-physical modes, which clearly depends on the group representation of the Higgs field. These results were presented during the Fourth Winter Workshop on Non-perturbative Quantum Field Theory, which took place in Sophia-Antipolis - France.

Effect of the Gribov horizon on the Polyakov loop and vice versa

We consider finite temperature SU(2) gauge theory in the continuum formulation, which necessitates the choice of a gauge fixing. Choosing the Landau gauge, the existing gauge copies are taken into account by means of the Gribov-Zwanziger (GZ) quantization scheme, which entails the introduction of a dynamical mass scale (Gribov mass) directly influencing the Green functions of the theory. Here, we determine simultaneously the Polyakov loop (vacuum expectation value) and Gribov mass in terms of temperature, by minimizing the vacuum energy w.r.t. the Polyakov loop parameter and solving the Gribov gap equation. Inspired by the Casimir energy-style of computation, we illustrate the usage of Zeta function regularization in finite temperature calculations. Our main result is that the Gribov mass directly feels the deconfinement transition, visible from a cusp occurring at the same temperature where the Polyakov loop becomes nonzero. In this exploratory work we mainly restrict ourselves to the original Gribov-Zwanziger quantization procedure in order to illustrate the approach and the potential direct link between the vacuum structure of the theory (dynamical mass scales) and (de)confinement. We also present a first look at the critical temperature obtained from the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger approach. Finally, a particular problem for the pressure at low temperatures is reported.

On bounds and boundary conditions in the continuum Landau gauge

In this note, we consider the Landau gauge in the continuum formulation. Our purposes are twofold. Firstly, we try to work out the consequences of the recently derived Cucchieri-Mendes bounds on the inverse Faddeev-Popov operator at the level of the path integral quantization. Secondly, we give an explicit renormalizable prescription to implement the so-called Landau B-gauges as introduced by Maas.

The Veneziano ghost, glost and gauge copies in QCD

In this short note, we come back to the recent proposal put forward by Kharzeev and Levin [PRL 114 (2015) 24, 242001], in which they phenomenologically couple the non-perturbative Veneziano ghost to the perturbative gluon, leading to a modified gluon propagator (the "glost") of the Gribov type, with complex poles. As such, a possible link was made between the QCD topological θ-vacuum (Veneziano ghost) and color confinement (no physically observable gluons). We discuss some subtleties concerning gauge (BRST) invariance of this proposal, related to the choice of Feynman gauge. We furthermore provide an example in the Landau gauge of a similar phenomenological vertex that also describes the necessary Veneziano ghost but does not affect the Landau gauge gluon propagator.

Padé approximation and glueball mass estimates in 3d and 4d with N_c = 2,3 colors

A Padé approximation approach, rooted in an infrared moment technique, is employed to provide mass estimates for various glueball states in pure gauge theories. The main input in this analysis are theoretically well-motivated fits to lattice gluon propagator data, which are by now available for both SU(2) and SU(3) in 3 and 4 space-time dimensions. We construct appropriate gauge invariant and Lorentz covariant operators in the (pseudo)scalar and (pseudo)tensor sector. Our estimates compare reasonably well with a variety of lattice sources directly aimed at extracting glueball masses.

The (IR-)relevance of the Gribov ambiguity in SU(2) x U(1) gauge theories with fundamental Higgs matter

It is well accepted that dealing with the Gribov ambiguity has a major impact on correlation functions in gauge-fixed Yang-Mills theories, in particular in the low momentum regime where standard perturbation theory based on the Faddeev-Popov approach fails. Recent results, derived from functional tools (Dyson-Schwinger equations or exact RG) or the effective Gribov-Zwanziger action method, pointed towards e.g. gauge boson correlation functions that are not compatible with the properties of observable degrees of freedom. Although such an observation is a welcome feature for gauge theories exhibiting confinement, it would be a discomfort for gauge theories supplemented with Higgs fields, cfr. the experimental success of the electroweak model based on a SU(2) x U(1) gauge group. The purpose of this short note is to assure that the effective action resolution to the Gribov ambiguity reduces to the standard Faddeev-Popov method in the perturbative regime of sufficiently small coupling/large Higgs condensate, thereby not compromising the physical particle spectrum of massive gauge bosons and a massless photon for the SU(2) x U(1) gauge-Higgs model. The closer the theory gets to the limit of vanishing Higgs condensate, the more the Gribov problem resurfaces with all its consequences. We give some speculations w.r.t. the Fradkin-Shenker insights about the phase diagram.

A study of the Higgs and confining phases in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theories in 3d by taking into account the Gribov horizon

We study SU(2) three-dimensional Yang-Mills theories in presence of Higgs fields in the light of the Gribov phenomenon. By restricting the domain of integration in the functional integral to the first Gribov horizon, we are able to discuss a kind of transition between the Higgs and the confining phase in a semi-classical approximation. Both adjoint and fundamental representation for the Higgs field are considered, leading to a different phase structure.

An all-order proof of the equivalence between Gribov's no-pole and Zwanziger's horizon conditions

The quantization of non-Abelian gauge theories is known to be plagued by Gribov copies. Typical examples are the copies related to zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator, which give rise to singularities in the ghost propagator. In this work we present an exact and compact expression for the ghost propagator as a function of external gauge fields, in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge. It is shown, to all orders, that the condition for the ghost propagator not to have a pole, the so-called Gribov's no-pole condition, can be implemented by demanding a nonvanishing expectation value for a functional of the gauge fields that turns out to be Zwanziger's horizon function. The action allowing to implement this condition is the Gribov-Zwanziger action. This establishes in a precise way the equivalence between Gribov's no-pole condition and Zwanziger's horizon condition.

Holographic rho mesons in an external magnetic field

We study the rho meson in a uniform magnetic field eB using a holographic QCD-model, more specifically a D4/D8/Dbar8 brane setup in the confinement phase at zero temperature with two quenched flavours. The parameters of the model are fixed by matching to corresponding dual field theory parameters at zero magnetic field. We show that the up- and down-flavour branes respond differently to the presence of the magnetic field in the dual QCD-like theory, as expected because of the different electromagnetic charge carried by up- and down-quark. We discuss how to recover the Landau levels, indicating an instability of the QCD vacuum at eB = m_rho^2 towards a phase where charged rho mesons are condensed, as predicted by Chernodub using effective QCD-models. We improve on these existing effective QCD-model analyses by also taking into account the chiral magnetic catalysis effect, which tells us that the constituent quark masses rise with eB. This turns out to increase the value of the critical magnetic field for the onset of rho meson condensation to eB = 1.1 m_rho^2 = 0.67 GeV^2. We briefly discuss the influence of pions, which turn out to be irrelevant for the condensation in the approximation made.

On the transition temperature(s) of magnetized two-flavour holographic QCD

During heavy ion collisions, high temperatures and strong magnetic fields are generated. We employ the gauge-gravity duality to study the N_f=2 QCD phase diagram under these extreme conditions in the quenched approximation, in particular we use the non-antipodal Sakai-Sugimoto model (SSM). We take the different coupling of up and down flavours to the magnetic field into account geometrically, resulting in a split of the chiral phase transition according to flavour. We discuss the influence of the magnetic field on the chiral temperatures -in physical GeV units- in terms of the choice of the confinement scale in the model, extending hereby our elsewhere presented discussion of fixing the non-antipodal SSM parameters to the deconfinement phase. The flavour-dependent (T,L,eB) phase diagram, with variable asymptotic brane-antibrane separation L, is also presented, as a direct generalization of the known (T,L) phase diagram of the non-antipodal SSM at zero magnetic field. In particular, for sufficiently small L we are probing a NJL-like boundary field theory in which case we do find results very reminiscent of the predictions in NJL models.

Physical spectrum from confined excitations in a Yang-Mills-inspired toy model

We study a toy model for an interacting scalar field theory in which the fundamental excitations are confined in the sense of having unphysical, positivity-violating propagators, a fact tracing back to a decomposition of these in propagators with complex conjugate mass poles (the so-called $i$-particles). Similar two-point functions show up in certain approaches to gluon or quark propagators in Yang-Mills gauge theories. We investigate the spectrum of our model and show that suitable composite operators may be constructed having a well-defined Källén-Lehmann spectral representation, thus allowing for a particle interpretation. These physical excitations would correspond to the "mesons" of the model, the latter being bound states of two unphysical $i$-particles. The meson mass is explicitly estimated from the pole emerging in a resummed class of diagrams. The main purpose of this paper is thus to explicitly verify how a real mass pole can and does emerge out of constituent $i$-particles that have complex masses.

Semiclassical analysis of the phases of 4d SU(2) Higgs gauge systems with cutoff at the Gribov horizon

We present an analytical study of continuum 4d SU(2) gauge Higgs models with a single Higgs field with fixed length in either the fundamental or adjoint representation. We aim at analytically probing the renowned predictions of Fradkin & Shenker on the phase diagram in terms of confinement versus Higgs behaviour, obtained for the lattice version of the model. We work in the Landau version of the 't Hooft R_ξgauges in which case we can access potential nonperturbative physics related to the existence of the Gribov copies. In the fundamental case, we clearly show that in the perturbative regime of small gauge coupling constant g and large Higgs vacuum expectation value v, there is a Higgs phase with Yukawa gauge boson propagators without Gribov effects. For a small value of the Higgs vev v and/or large g, we enter a region with Gribov type propagators that have no physical particle interpretation: the gauge bosons are as such confined. The transition between both behaviours is found to be continuous. In the adjoint case, we find evidence of a more drastic transition between the different behaviours for the propagator of the off-diagonal gauge bosons, whereas the "photon", i.e. the diagonal component of the gauge field, displays a propagator of the Gribov type. In the limit of infinite Higgs condensate, we show that a massless photon is recovered. We compare our findings with those of Fradkin & Shenker as well as with more recent numerical lattice simulations of the fundamental Higgs model. We also carefully discuss in which region of the parameter space (v,g) our approximations are trustworthy.

SU(2) x U(1) Yang-Mills theories in 3d with Higgs field and Gribov ambiguity

We study the structure of the gauge propagators of a 3d version of the electroweak interaction in terms of the Higgs vacuum expectation value nu, of the non-Abelian gauge coupling g, and of the Abelian gauge coupling g', when nonperturbative effects related to the non-Abelian gauge fixing are introduced by means of an adapted path integral measure. In the perturbative regime of small non-Abelian coupling g and sufficiently large nu, the well-known standard Z and W propagators are recovered, together with a massless photon. In general, depending on the relative magnitudes of g, g' and nu, we uncover a quite different propagator structure. In a later stage of research, the results here derived can be used to study the associated phase diagram in more depth.

Glueball spectral densities from the lattice

The propagator of a physical degree of freedom ought to obey a Källén-Lehmann spectral representation, with positive spectral density. The latter quantity is directly related to a cross section based on the optical theorem. The spectral density is a crucial ingredient of a quantum field theory with elementary and bound states, with a direct experimental connection as the masses of the excitations reflect themselves into (continuum) $δ$-singularities. In usual lattice simulational approaches to the QCD spectrum the spectral density itself is not accessed. The (bound state) masses are extracted from the asymptotic exponential decay of the two-point function. Given the importance of the spectral density, each nonperturbative continuum approach to QCD should be able to adequately describe it or to take into proper account. In this work, we wish to present a first trial in extracting an estimate for the scalar glueball spectral density in SU(3) gluodynamics using lattice gauge theory.

Nontrivial ghost-gluon vertex and the match of RGZ, DSE and lattice Yang-Mills propagators

Either by solving the ghost propagator DSE or through a one-loop computation in the RGZ (Refined Gribov-Zwanziger) formalism, we show that a non-trivial ghost-gluon vertex is anyhow required to obtain a ghost propagator prediction compatible with the available corresponding lattice data in the SU(3) case. For the necessary gluon propagator input, we present RGZ tree level fits which account well for the gluon lattice data. Interestingly, this propagator can be rewritten in terms of a running gluon mass. A comparison of both DSE and RGZ results for the ghost propagator is furthermore provided. We also briefly discuss the connection between the RGZ and the OPE $d=2$ gluon condensate.

On the leading OPE corrections to the ghost-gluon vertex and the Taylor theorem

This brief note is devoted to a study of genuine non-perturbative corrections to the Landau gauge ghost-gluon vertex in terms of the non-vanishing dimension-two gluon condensate. We pay special attention to the kinematical limit which the bare vertex takes for its tree-level expression at any perturbative order, according to the well-known Taylor theorem. Based on our OPE analysis, we also present a simple model for the vertex, in acceptable agreement with lattice data.

From Running Gluon Mass to Chiral Symmetry Breaking

The gluon propagator is one of the fundamental Green's functions of QCD. It is an essential ingredient in, for example, the modeling of the Schwinger-Dyson equation used to describe hadronic phenomenology. From the Landau gauge gluon propagator, computed with lattice QCD methods, we discuss its interpretation as a massive propagator and measure the gluon mass as a function of the momenta. Special attention is given to the mass at infrared scales. In the last part of the talk, the gluon mass and chiral symmetry breaking are related via an effective model for QCD.

Glueball masses from an infrared moment problem and nonperturbative Landau gauge

We set up an infrared-based moment problem to obtain estimates of the masses of the scalar, pseudoscalar and tensor glueballs in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories using the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) version of the Landau gauge, which takes into account nonperturbative physics related to gauge copies. Employing lattice input for the mass scales of the RGZ gluon propagator, the lowest order moment problem approximation gives the values m_{0++}\approx 1.96 GeV, m_{2++} \approx 2.04 GeV and m_{0-+}\approx 2.19 GeV in the SU(3) case, all within a 20% range of the corresponding lattice values. We also recover the mass hierarchy m_{0++}<m_{2++}<m_{0-+}.

On the reanimation of a local BRST invariance in the (Refined) Gribov-Zwanziger formalism

We localize a previously established nonlocal BRST invariance of the Gribov-Zwanziger (GZ) action by the introduction of additional fields. We obtain a modified GZ action with a corresponding local BRST invariance. We show that correlation functions of the original elementary GZ fields do not change upon evaluation with the modified partition function. We discuss that for vanishing Gribov mass, we are brought back to the original Yang-Mills theory with standard BRST invariance.

The dynamical origin of the refinement of the Gribov-Zwanziger theory

In recent years, the Gribov-Zwanziger action was refined by taking into account certain dimension 2 condensates. In this fashion, one succeeded in bringing the gluon and the ghost propagator obtained from the GZ model in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the lattice data. In this paper, we shall elaborate further on this aspect. First, we shall show that more dimension 2 condensates can be taken into account than considered so far and, in addition, we shall give firm evidence that these condensates are in fact present by discussing the effective potential. It follows thus that the Gribov-Zwanziger action dynamically transforms itself into the refined version, thereby showing that the continuum nonperturbative Landau gauge fixing, as implemented by the Gribov-Zwanziger approach, is consistent with lattice simulations.

From propagators to glueballs in the Gribov-Zwanziger framework

Over the last years, lattice calculations in pure Yang-Mills gauge theory seem to have come more or less to a consensus. The ghost propagator is not enhanced and the gluon propagator is positivity violating, infrared suppressed and non-vanishing at zero momentum. From an analytical point of view, several groups are agreeing with these results. Among them, the refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) framework also accommodates for these results. The question which rises next is, if our models hold the right form for the propagators, how to extract information on the real physical observables, i.e. the glueballs? How do the operators which represent glueballs look like? We review the current status of this matter within the RGZ framework.

From unphysical gluon and ghost propagators to physical glueball propagators (in the Gribov-Zwanziger picture): a not so trivial task?

During recent years, a good agreement was found between the analytical derivation and the numerical simulation of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators. We mention the Schwinger-Dyson and Gribov-Zwanziger formalism for the analytical work. Although the agreement between several approaches is nice, these propagators do not correspond to the relevant physical degrees of freedom. In the case of pure gauge theories, one should start to study the glueball correlators. We shall try to explain why it looks like a hard challenge to go from the unphysical to the physical propagators in the case of the Gribov-Zwanziger theory (but similar conclusions might hold for other approaches giving similar propagators).

Gribov horizon and BRST symmetry: a pathway to confinement

We summarize the construction of the Gribov-Zwanziger action and how it leads to a scenario which explains the confinement of gluons, in the sense that the elementary gluon excitations violate positivity. Then we address the question of how one can construct operators within this picture whose one-loop correlation functions have the correct analytic properties in order to correspond to physical excitations. For this we introduce the concept of i-particles.

Gribov horizon and i-particles: about a toy model and the construction of physical operators

Restricting the functional integral to the Gribov region $Ω$ leads to a deep modification of the behavior of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the infrared region. For example, a gluon propagator of the Gribov type, $\frac{k^2}{k^4+{\hat γ}^4}$, can be viewed as a propagating pair of unphysical modes, called here $i$-particles, with complex masses $\pm i{\hat γ}^2$. From this viewpoint, gluons are unphysical and one can see them as being confined. We introduce a simple toy model describing how a suitable set of composite operators can be constructed out of $i$-particles whose correlation functions exhibit only real branch cuts, with associated positive spectral density. These composite operators can thus be called physical and are the toy analogy of glueballs in the Gribov-Zwanziger theory.

Indirect lattice evidence for the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger formalism and the gluon condensate $\braket{A^2}$ in the Landau gauge

We consider the gluon propagator $D(p^2)$ at various lattice sizes and spacings in the case of pure SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theories using the Landau gauge fixing. We discuss a class of fits in the infrared region in order to (in)validate the tree level analytical prediction in terms of the (Refined) Gribov-Zwanziger framework. It turns out that an important role is played by the presence of the widely studied dimension two gluon condensate $\braket{A^2}$. Including this effect allows to obtain an acceptable fit up to 1 á 1.5 GeV, while corroborating the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger prediction for the gluon propagator. We also discuss the infinite volume extrapolation, leading to the estimate $D(0)=8.3\pm0.5\text{GeV}^{-2}$. As a byproduct, we can also provide the prediction $\braket{g^2 A^2}\approx 3\text{GeV}^2$ obtained at the renormalization scale $μ=10\text{GeV}$.

More on the renormalization of the horizon function of the Gribov-Zwanziger action and the Kugo-Ojima Green function(s)

In this paper we provide strong evidence that there is no ambiguity in the choice of the horizon function underlying the Gribov-Zwanziger action. We show that there is only one correct possibility which is determined by the requirement of multiplicative renormalizability. As a consequence, this means that relations derived from other horizon functions cannot be given a consistent interpretation in terms of a local and renormalizable quantum field theory. In addition, we also discuss that the Kugo-Ojima functions $u(p^2)$ and $w(p^2)$ can only be defined after renormalization of the underlying Green function(s).

A candidate for the scalar glueball operator within the Gribov-Zwanziger framework

This proceeding gives an overview of the renormalization of $F^2_{μν}$ using the Faddeev-Popov action and the more complicate Gribov-Zwanziger action, which deals with Gribov copies. We show that using the Faddeev-Popov action, $F^2_{μν}$ mixes with other $d=4$ operators. However, due to the BRST invariance of the action, this mixing is not relevant at the level of the correlator, $\Braket {F^2_{μν}(x) F^2_{αβ}(y)}$. In contrast, when turning to the Gribov-Zwanziger action, the mixing of $F^2_{μν}$ with other $d=4$ operator does have consequences at the level of the correlator. This is due to the breaking of the BRST. We then present a possible candidate for a physical operator in the Gribov-Zwanziger framework.

A potential setup for perturbative confinement

A few years ago, 't Hooft suggested a way to discuss confinement in a perturbative fashion. The original idea was put forward in the Coulomb gauge at tree level. In recent years, the concept of a nonperturbative short distance linear potential also attracted phenomenological attention. Motivated by these observations, we discuss how a perturbative framework, leading to a linear piece in the potential, can be developed in a manifestly gauge and Lorentz invariant manner, which moreover enjoys the property of being renormalizable to all orders. We provide an effective action framework to discuss the dynamical realization of the proposed scenario in Yang-Mills gauge theory.

Aspects of the Gribov-Zwanziger framework

The existence of gauge (Gribov) copies disturbs the usual Faddeev-Popov quantization procedure in the Landau gauge. It is a very hard job to treat these in the continuum, even in a partial manner. A decent way to do so was worked out by Gribov, and later on by Zwanziger. The final point was a renormalizable action (the Gribov-Zwanziger action), implementing the restriction of the path integration to the so-called Gribov region, which is free of a subset of gauge copies, but not of all copies. Till recently, everybody agreed upon the fact that the restriction to the Gribov region implied a infrared enhanced ghost, and vanishing zero momentum gluon propagator. We discuss how the Gribov-Zwanziger action naturally leads to the existence of vacuum condensates of dimension two. As it is very common, such condensates can seriously alter the dynamics. In particular, the Gribov-Zwanziger condensates give rise to a gluon propagator with a finite but nonvanishing zero momentum limit, and reconstitute a nonenhanced ghost. We call this the refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework. The predictions are in qualitative agreement with most recent lattice simulations, and certain solutions of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. A crucial feature of the Gribov-Zwanziger framework is the soft (controllable) breaking of the BRST symmetry. We also point out that imposing the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion on the Faddeev-Popov theory as a boundary condition from the beginning leads to the same partition function as of Gribov-Zwanziger, with associated BRST symmetry breaking. This clouds the interpretation of the Kugo-Ojima criterion in se.

Gribov ambiguities in the maximal Abelian gauge

The effects of the Gribov copies on the gluon and ghost propagators are investigated in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. By following Gribov's original approach, extended to the maximal Abelian gauge, we are able to show that the diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the characteristic Gribov type behavior. The off-diagonal component is found to be of the Yukawa type, with a dynamical mass originating from the dimension two gluon condensate, which is also taken into account. Furthermore, the off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits infrared enhancement. Finally, we make a comparison with available lattice data.

The infrared behavior of the gluon and ghost propagators in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge

We report on some recent analytical results on the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge (MAG). This gauge is of particular interest for the dual superconductivity picture to explain color confinement. Two kinds of effects are taken into account: those arising from a treatment of Gribov copies in the MAG and those arising from a dynamical mass originating in a dimension two gluon condensate. The diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the typical Gribov-type behaviour, while the off-diagonal component is of the Yukawa type due to the dynamical mass. These results are in qualitative agreement with available lattice data on the gluon propagators. The off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits an infrared enhancement due to the Gribov restriction, while the diagonal one remains unaffected.

Off-diagonal mass generation for Yang-Mills theories in the maximal Abelian gauge

We investigate a dynamical mass generation mechanism for the off-diagonal gluons and ghosts in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories, quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. Such a mass can be seen as evidence for the Abelian dominance in that gauge. It originates from the condensation of a mixed gluon-ghost operator of mass dimension two, which lowers the vacuum energy. We construct an effective potential for this operator by a combined use of the local composite operators technique with algebraic renormalization and we discuss the gauge parameter independence of the results. We also show that it is possible to connect the vacuum energy, due to the mass dimension two condensate discussed here, with the non-trivial vacuum energy originating from the condensate <A^2>, which has attracted much attention in the Landau gauge.
