Critical Field Theories with OSp$(1|2M)$ Symmetry

In the paper [L. Fei et al., JHEP 09 (2015) 076] a cubic field theory of a scalar field $σ$ and two anticommuting scalar fields, $θ$ and $\bar θ$, was formulated. In $6-ε$ dimensions it has a weakly coupled fixed point with imaginary cubic couplings where the symmetry is enhanced to the supergroup OSp$(1|2)$. This theory may be viewed as a "UV completion" in $2<d<6$ of the non-linear sigma model with hyperbolic target space H$^{0|2}$ described by a pair of intrinsic anticommuting coordinates. It also describes the $q\rightarrow 0$ limit of the critical $q$-state Potts model, which is equivalent to the statistical mechanics of spanning forests on a graph. In this letter we generalize these results to a class of OSp$(1|2M)$ symmetric field theories whose upper critical dimensions are $d_c(M) = 2 \frac{2M+1}{2M-1}$. They contain $2M$ anticommuting scalar fields, $θ^i, \bar θ^i$, and one commuting one, with interaction $g\left (σ^2+ 2θ^i \bar θ^i \right )^{(2M+1)/2}$. In $d_c(M)-ε$ dimensions, we find a weakly coupled IR fixed point at an imaginary value of $g$. We propose that these critical theories are the UV completions of the sigma models with fermionic hyperbolic target spaces H$^{0|2M}$. Of particular interest is the quintic field theory with OSp$(1|4)$ symmetry, whose upper critical dimension is $10/3$. Using this theory, we make a prediction for the critical behavior of the OSp$(1|4)$ lattice system in three dimensions.

Hagedorn Temperature in Large $N$ Majorana Quantum Mechanics

We discuss two types of quantum mechanical models that couple large numbers of Majorana fermions and have orthogonal symmetry groups. In models of vector type, only one of the symmetry groups has a large rank. The large $N$ limit is taken keeping $gN=λ$ fixed, where $g$ multiplies the quartic Hamiltonian. We introduce a simple model with $O(N)\times SO(4)$ symmetry, whose energies are expressed in terms of the quadratic Casimirs of the symmetry groups. This model may be deformed so that the symmetry is $O(N)\times O(2)^2$, and the Hamiltonian reduces to that studied in arXiv:1802.10263. We find analytic expressions for the large $N$ density of states and free energy. In both vector models, the large $N$ density of states varies approximately as $e^{-|E|/λ}$ for a wide range of energies. This gives rise to critical behavior as the temperature approaches the Hagedorn temperature $T_{\rm H} = λ$. In the formal large $N$ limit, the specific heat blows up as $(T_H- T)^{-2}$, which implies that $T_H$ is the limiting temperature. However, at any finite $N$, it is possible to reach arbitrarily large temperatures. Thus, the finite $N$ effects smooth out the Hagedorn transition. We also study models of matrix type, which have two $O(N)$ symmetry groups with large rank. An example is provided by the Majorana matrix model with $O(N)^2\times O(2)$ symmetry, which was studied in arXiv:1802.10263. In contrast with the vector models, the density of states is smooth and nearly Gaussian near the middle of the spectrum.

The $O(N)$ Model in $4<d<6$: Instantons and Complex CFTs

We revisit the scalar $O(N)$ model in the dimension range $4<d<6$ and study the effects caused by its metastability. As shown in previous work, this model formally possesses a fixed point where, perturbatively in the $1/N$ expansion, the operator scaling dimensions are real and above the unitarity bound. Here, we further show that these scaling dimensions do acquire small imaginary parts due to the instanton effects. In $d$ dimensions and for large $N$, we find that they are of order $e^{-N f(d)}$, where, remarkably, the function $f(d)$ equals the sphere free energy of a conformal scalar in $d-2$ dimensions. The non-perturbatively small imaginary parts also appear in other observables, such as the sphere free energy and two and three-point function coefficients, and we present some of their calculations. Therefore, at sufficiently large $N$, the $O(N)$ models in $4<d<6$ may be thought of as complex CFTs. When $N$ is large enough for the imaginary parts to be numerically negligible, the five-dimensional $O(N)$ models may be studied using the techniques of numerical bootstrap.

On $C_{J}$ and $C_{T}$ in Conformal QED

QED with a large number $N$ of massless fermionic degrees of freedom has a conformal phase in a range of space-time dimensions. We use a large $N$ diagrammatic approach to calculate the leading corrections to $C_T$, the coefficient of the two-point function of the stress-energy tensor, and $C_J$, the coefficient of the two-point function of the global symmetry current. We present explicit formulae as a function of $d$ and check them versus the expectations in 2 and $4-ε$ dimensions. Using our results in higher even dimensions we find a concise formula for $C_T$ of the conformal Maxwell theory with higher derivative action $F_{μν} (-\nabla^2)^{\frac{d}{2}-2} F^{μν}$. In $d=3$, QED has a topological symmetry current, and we calculate the correction to its two-point function coefficient, $C^{\textrm{top}}_{J}$. We also show that some RG flows involving QED in $d=3$ obey $C_T^{\rm UV} > C_T^{\rm IR}$ and discuss possible implications of this inequality for the symmetry breaking at small values of $N$.

On $C_J$ and $C_T$ in the Gross-Neveu and $O(N)$ Models

We apply large $N$ diagrammatic techniques for theories with double-trace interactions to the leading corrections to $C_J$, the coefficient of a conserved current two-point function, and $C_T$, the coefficient of the stress-energy tensor two-point function. We study in detail two famous conformal field theories in continuous dimensions, the scalar $O(N)$ model and the Gross-Neveu model. For the $O(N)$ model, where the answers for the leading large $N$ corrections to $C_J$ and $C_T$ were derived long ago using analytic bootstrap, we show that the diagrammatic approach reproduces them correctly. We also carry out a new perturbative test of these results using the $O(N)$ symmetric cubic scalar theory in $6-ε$ dimensions. We go on to apply the diagrammatic method to the Gross-Neveu model, finding explicit formulae for the leading corrections to $C_J$ and $C_T$ as a function of dimension. We check these large $N$ results using regular perturbation theory for the Gross-Neveu model in $2+ε$ dimensions and the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model in $4-ε$ dimensions. For small values of $N$, we use Pade approximants based on the $4-ε$ and $2+ε$ expansions to estimate the values of $C_J$ and $C_T$ in $d=3$. For the $O(N)$ model our estimates are close to those found using the conformal bootstrap. For the GN model, our estimates suggest that, even when $N$ is small, $C_T$ differs by no more than $2\%$ from that in the theory of free fermions. We find that the inequality $C_T^{\textrm{UV}} > C_T^{\textrm{IR}}$ applies both to the GN and the scalar $O(N)$ models in $d=3$.

The ABC of Higher-Spin AdS/CFT

In recent literature one-loop tests of the higher-spin AdS$_{d+1}$/CFT$_d$ correspondences were carried out. Here we extend these results to a more general set of theories in $d>2$. First, we consider the Type B higher spin theories, which have been conjectured to be dual to CFTs consisting of the singlet sector of $N$ free fermion fields. In addition to the case of $N$ Dirac fermions, we carefully study the projections to Weyl, Majorana, symplectic, and Majorana-Weyl fermions in the dimensions where they exist. Second, we explore theories involving elements of both Type A and Type B theories, which we call Type AB. Their spectrum includes fields of every half-integer spin, and they are expected to be related to the $U(N)/O(N)$ singlet sector of the CFT of $N$ free complex/real scalar and fermionic fields. Finally, we explore the Type C theories, which have been conjectured to be dual to the CFTs of $p$-form gauge fields, where $p=\frac d 2 -1$. In most cases we find that the free energies at $O(N^0)$ either vanish or give contributions proportional to the free-energy of a single free field in the conjectured dual CFT. Interpreting these non-vanishing values as shifts of the bulk coupling constant $G_N\sim 1/(N-k)$, we find the values $k=-1, -1/2, 0, 1/2, 1, 2$. Exceptions to this rule are the Type B and AB theories in odd $d$; for them we find a mismatch between the bulk and boundary free energies that has a simple structure, but does not follow from a simple shift of the bulk coupling constant.

Accidental Symmetries and the Conformal Bootstrap

We study an ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric generalization of the three-dimensional critical $O(N)$ vector model that is described by $N+1$ chiral superfields with superpotential $W = g_1 X \sum_i Z_i^2 + g_2 X^3$. By combining the tools of the conformal bootstrap with results obtained through supersymmetric localization, we argue that this model exhibits a symmetry enhancement at the infrared superconformal fixed point due to $g_2$ flowing to zero. This example is special in that the existence of an infrared fixed point with $g_1,g_2\neq 0$, which does not exhibit symmetry enhancement, does not generally lead to any obvious unitarity violations or other inconsistencies. We do show, however, that the $F$-theorem excludes the models with $g_1,g_2\neq 0$ for $N>5$. The conformal bootstrap provides a stronger constraint and excludes such models for $N>2$. We provide evidence that the $g_2=0$ models, which have the enhanced $O(N)\times U(1)$ symmetry, come close to saturating the bootstrap bounds. We extend our analysis to fractional dimensions where we can motivate the nonexistence of the $g_1,g_2\neq 0$ models by studying them perturbatively in the $4-ε$ expansion.

Conformal QED$_d$, $F$-Theorem and the $ε$ Expansion

We calculate the free energies $F$ for $U(1)$ gauge theories on the $d$ dimensional sphere of radius $R$. For the theory with free Maxwell action we find the exact result as a function of $d$; it contains the term $\frac{d-4}{2} \log R$ consistent with the lack of conformal invariance in dimensions other than 4. When the $U(1)$ gauge theory is coupled to a sufficient number $N_f$ of massless 4 component fermions, it acquires an interacting conformal phase, which in $d<4$ describes the long distance behavior of the model. The conformal phase can be studied using large $N_f$ methods. Generalizing the $d=3$ calculation in arXiv:1112.5342, we compute its sphere free energy as a function of $d$, ignoring the terms of order $1/N_f$ and higher. For finite $N_f$, following arXiv:1409.1937 and arXiv:1507.01960, we develop the $4-ε$ expansion for the sphere free energy of conformal QED$_d$. Its extrapolation to $d=3$ shows very good agreement with the large $N_f$ approximation for $N_f>3$. For $N_f$ at or below some critical value $N_{\rm crit}$, the $SU(2N_f)$ symmetric conformal phase of QED$_3$ is expected to disappear or become unstable. By using the $F$-theorem and comparing the sphere free energies in the conformal and broken symmetry phases, we show that $N_{\rm crit}\leq 4$. As another application of our results, we calculate the one loop beta function in conformal QED$_6$, where the gauge field has a 4-derivative kinetic term. We show that this theory coupled to $N_f$ massless fermions is asymptotically free.

Critical $Sp(N)$ Models in $6-ε$ Dimensions and Higher Spin dS/CFT

Theories of anti-commuting scalar fields are non-unitary, but they are of interest both in statistical mechanics and in studies of the higher spin de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory correspondence. We consider an $Sp(N)$ invariant theory of $N$ anti-commuting scalars and one commuting scalar, which has cubic interactions and is renormalizable in 6 dimensions. For any even $N$ we find an IR stable fixed point in $6-ε$ dimensions at imaginary values of coupling constants. Using calculations up to three loop order, we develop $ε$ expansions for several operator dimensions and for the sphere free energy $F$. The conjectured $F$-theorem is obeyed in spite of the non-unitarity of the theory. The $1/N$ expansion in the $Sp(N)$ theory is related to that in the corresponding $O(N)$ symmetric theory by the change of sign of $N$. Our results point to the existence of interacting non-unitary 5-dimensional CFTs with $Sp(N)$ symmetry, where operator dimensions are real. We conjecture that these CFTs are dual to the minimal higher spin theory in 6-dimensional de Sitter space with Neumann future boundary conditions on the scalar field. For $N=2$ we show that the IR fixed point possesses an enhanced global symmetry given by the supergroup $OSp(1|2)$. This suggests the existence of $OSp(1|2)$ symmetric CFTs in dimensions smaller than 6. We show that the $6-ε$ expansions of the scaling dimensions and sphere free energy in our $OSp(1|2)$ model are the same as in the $q \rightarrow 0$ limit of the $q$-state Potts model.

Generalized $F$-Theorem and the $ε$ Expansion

Some known constraints on Renormalization Group flow take the form of inequalities: in even dimensions they refer to the coefficient $a$ of the Weyl anomaly, while in odd dimensions to the sphere free energy $F$. In recent work arXiv:1409.1937 it was suggested that the $a$- and $F$-theorems may be viewed as special cases of a Generalized $F$-Theorem valid in continuous dimension. This conjecture states that, for any RG flow from one conformal fixed point to another, $\tilde F_{\rm UV} > \tilde F_{\rm IR}$, where $\tilde F=\sin (πd/2)\log Z_{S^d}$. Here we provide additional evidence in favor of the Generalized $F$-Theorem. We show that it holds in conformal perturbation theory, i.e. for RG flows produced by weakly relevant operators. We also study a specific example of the Wilson-Fisher $O(N)$ model and define this CFT on the sphere $S^{4-ε}$, paying careful attention to the beta functions for the coefficients of curvature terms. This allows us to develop the $ε$ expansion of $\tilde F$ up to order $ε^5$. Pade extrapolation of this series to $d=3$ gives results that are around $2-3\%$ below the free field values for small $N$. We also study RG flows which include an anisotropic perturbation breaking the $O(N)$ symmetry; we again find that the results are consistent with $\tilde F_{\rm UV} > \tilde F_{\rm IR}$.

Interpolating between $a$ and $F$

We study the dimensional continuation of the sphere free energy in conformal field theories. In continuous dimension $d$ we define the quantity $\tilde F=\sin (πd/2)\log Z$, where $Z$ is the path integral of the Euclidean CFT on the $d$-dimensional round sphere. $\tilde F$ smoothly interpolates between $(-1)^{d/2}π/2$ times the $a$-anomaly coefficient in even $d$, and $(-1)^{(d+1)/2}$ times the sphere free energy $F$ in odd $d$. We calculate $\tilde F$ in various examples of unitary CFT that can be continued to non-integer dimensions, including free theories, double-trace deformations at large $N$, and perturbative fixed points in the $ε$ expansion. For all these examples $\tilde F$ is positive, and it decreases under RG flow. Using perturbation theory in the coupling, we calculate $\tilde F$ in the Wilson-Fisher fixed point of the $O(N)$ vector model in $d=4-ε$ to order $ε^4$. We use this result to estimate the value of $F$ in the 3-dimensional Ising model, and find that it is only a few percent below $F$ of the free conformally coupled scalar field. We use similar methods to estimate the $F$ values for the $U(N)$ Gross-Neveu model in $d=3$ and the $O(N)$ model in $d=5$. Finally, we carry out the dimensional continuation of interacting theories with 4 supercharges, for which we suggest that $\tilde F$ may be calculated exactly using an appropriate version of localization on $S^d$. Our approach provides an interpolation between the $a$-maximization in $d=4$ and the $F$-maximization in $d=3$.

Critical $O(N)$ Models in $6-ε$ Dimensions

We revisit the classic $O(N)$ symmetric scalar field theories in $d$ dimensions with interaction $(ϕ^i ϕ^i)^2$. For $2<d<4$ these theories flow to the Wilson-Fisher fixed points for any $N$. A standard large $N$ Hubbard-Stratonovich approach also indicates that, for $4<d<6$, these theories possess unitary UV fixed points. We propose their alternate description in terms of a theory of $N+1$ massless scalars with the cubic interactions $σϕ^i ϕ^i$ and $σ^3$. Our one-loop calculation in $6-ε$ dimensions shows that this theory has an IR stable fixed point at real values of the coupling constants for $N>1038$. We show that the $1/N$ expansions of various operator scaling dimensions match the known results for the critical $O(N)$ theory continued to $d=6-ε$. These results suggest that, for sufficiently large $N$, there are 5-dimensional unitary $O(N)$ symmetric interacting CFT's; they should be dual to the Vasiliev higher-spin theory in AdS$_6$ with alternate boundary conditions for the bulk scalar. Using these CFT's we provide a new test of the 5-dimensional $F$-theorem, and also find a new counterexample for the $C_T$ theorem.

Higher Spin AdS$_{d+1}$/CFT$_d$ at One Loop

Following arXiv:1308.2337, we carry out one loop tests of higher spin AdS$_{d+1}$/CFT$_d$ correspondences for $d\geq 2$. The Vasiliev theories in AdS$_{d+1}$, which contain each integer spin once, are related to the $U(N)$ singlet sector of the $d$-dimensional CFT of $N$ free complex scalar fields; the minimal theories containing each even spin once -- to the $O(N)$ singlet sector of the CFT of $N$ free real scalar fields. Using analytic continuation of higher spin zeta functions, which naturally regulate the spin sums, we calculate one loop vacuum energies in Euclidean AdS$_{d+1}$. In even $d$ we compare the result with the $O(N^0)$ correction to the $a$-coefficient of the Weyl anomaly; in odd $d$ -- with the $O(N^0)$ correction to the free energy $F$ on the $d$-dimensional sphere. For the theories of integer spins, the correction vanishes in agreement with the CFT of $N$ free complex scalars. For the minimal theories, the correction always equals the contribution of one real conformal scalar field in $d$ dimensions. As explained in arXiv:1308.2337, this result may agree with the $O(N)$ singlet sector of the theory of $N$ real scalar fields, provided the coupling constant in the higher spin theory is identified as $G_N\sim 1/(N-1)$. Our calculations in even $d$ are closely related to finding the regularized $a$-anomalies of conformal higher spin theories. In each even $d$ we identify two such theories with vanishing $a$-anomaly: a theory of all integer spins, and a theory of all even spins coupled to a complex conformal scalar. We also discuss an interacting UV fixed point in $d=5$ obtained from the free scalar theory via an irrelevant double-trace quartic interaction. This interacting large $N$ theory is dual to the Vasiliev theory in AdS$_6$ where the bulk scalar is quantized with the alternate boundary condition.

Partition Functions and Casimir Energies in Higher Spin AdS_{d+1}/CFT_d

Recently, the one-loop free energy of higher spin (HS) theories in Euclidean AdS_{d+1} was calculated and matched with the order N^0 term in the free energy of the large N "vectorial" scalar CFT on the S^d boundary. Here we extend this matching to the boundary theory defined on S^1 x S^{d-1}, where the length of S^1 may be interpreted as the inverse temperature. It has been shown that the large N limit of the partition function on S^1 x S^2 in the U(N) singlet sector of the CFT of N free complex scalars matches the one-loop thermal partition function of the Vasiliev theory in AdS_4, while in the O(N) singlet sector of the CFT of N real scalars it matches the minimal theory containing even spins only. We extend this matching to all dimensions d. We also calculate partition functions for the singlet sectors of free fermion CFT's in various dimensions and match them with appropriately defined higher spin theories, which for d>3 contain massless gauge fields with mixed symmetry. In the zero-temperature case R x S^{d-1} we calculate the Casimir energy in the scalar or fermionic CFT and match it with the one-loop correction in the global AdS_{d+1}. For any odd-dimensional CFT the Casimir energy must vanish on general grounds, and we show that the HS duals obey this. In the U(N) symmetric case, we exhibit the vanishing of the regularized 1-loop Casimir energy of the dual HS theory in AdS_{d+1}. In the minimal HS theory the vacuum energy vanishes for odd d while for even d it is equal to the Casimir energy of a single conformal scalar in R x S^{d-1} which is again consistent with AdS/CFT, provided the minimal HS coupling constant is ~ 1/(N-1). We demonstrate analogous results for singlet sectors of theories of N Dirac or Majorana fermions. We also discuss extensions to CFT's containing N_f flavors in the fundamental representation of U(N) or O(N).

Three Loop Analysis of the Critical $O(N)$ Models in $6-ε$ Dimensions

We continue the study, initiated in arXiv:1404.1094, of the $O(N)$ symmetric theory of $N+1$ massless scalar fields in $6-ε$ dimensions. This theory has cubic interaction terms $\frac{1}{2}g_1 σ(ϕ^i)^2 + \frac{1}{6}g_2 σ^3$. We calculate the 3-loop beta functions for the two couplings and use them to determine certain operator scaling dimensions at the IR stable fixed point up to order $ε^3$. We also use the beta functions to determine the corrections to the critical value of $N$ below which there is no fixed point at real couplings. The result suggests a very significant reduction in the critical value as the dimension is decreased to $5$. We also study the theory with $N=1$, which has a $Z_2$ symmetry under $ϕ\rightarrow -ϕ$. We show that it possesses an IR stable fixed point at imaginary couplings which can be reached by flow from a nearby fixed point describing a pair of $N=0$ theories. We calculate certain operator scaling dimensions at the IR fixed point of the $N=1$ theory and suggest that, upon continuation to two dimensions, it describes a non-unitary conformal minimal model.

A Crack in the Conformal Window

In {\cal N} = 2 superconformal three-dimensional field theory the R-symmetry is determined by locally maximizing the free energy F on the three-sphere. Using F-maximization, we study the {\cal N} = 2 supersymmetric U(N_c) gauge theory coupled to N_f pairs of fundamental and anti-fundamental superfields in the Veneziano large N_c limit, where x = N_f / N_c is kept fixed. This theory has a superconformal window 1 \leq x \leq \infty, while for x < 1 supersymmetry is broken. As we reduce x we find "a crack in the superconformal window" - a critical value x_c \approx 1.45 where the monopole operators reach the unitarity bound. To continue the theory to x < x_c we assume that the monopoles become free fields, leading to an accidental global symmetry. Using the Aharony dual description of the theory for x < x_c allows us to determine the R-charges and F for 1 \leq x < x_c. Adding a Chern-Simons term removes the transition at x_c. In these more general theories we study the scaling dimensions of meson operators as functions of x and κ= |k| / N_c. We find that there is an interesting transition in behavior at κ= 1.

AdS Description of Induced Higher-Spin Gauge Theory

We study deformations of three-dimensional large N CFTs by double-trace operators constructed from spin s single-trace operators of dimension Δ. These theories possess UV fixed points, and we calculate the change of the 3-sphere free energy δF= F_{UV}- F_{IR}. To describe the UV fixed point using the dual AdS_4 space we modify the boundary conditions on the spin s field in the bulk; this approach produces δF in agreement with the field theory calculations. If the spin s operator is a conserved current, then the fixed point is described by an induced parity invariant conformal spin s gauge theory. The low spin examples are QED_3 (s=1) and the 3-d induced conformal gravity (s=2). When the original CFT is that of N conformal complex scalar or fermion fields, the U(N) singlet sector of the induced 3-d gauge theory is dual to Vasiliev's theory in AdS_4 with alternate boundary conditions on the spin s massless gauge field. We test this correspondence by calculating the leading term in δF for large N. We show that the coefficient of (1/2)\log N in δF is equal to the number of spin s-1 gauge parameters that act trivially on the spin s gauge field. We discuss generalizations of these results to 3-d gauge theories including Chern-Simons terms and to theories where s is half-integer. We also argue that the Weyl anomaly a-coefficients of conformal spin s theories in even dimensions d, such as that of the Weyl-squared gravity in d=4, can be efficiently calculated using massless spin s fields in AdS_{d+1} with alternate boundary conditions. Using this method we derive a simple formula for the Weyl anomaly a-coefficients of the d=4 Fradkin-Tseytlin conformal higher-spin gauge fields. Similarly, using alternate boundary conditions in AdS_3 we reproduce the well-known central charge c=-26 of the bc ghosts in 2-d gravity, as well as its higher-spin generalizations.

One Loop Tests of Higher Spin AdS/CFT

Vasiliev's type A higher spin theories in AdS4 have been conjectured to be dual to the U(N) or O(N) singlet sectors in 3-d conformal field theories with N-component scalar fields. We compare the O(N^0) correction to the 3-sphere free energy F in the CFTs with corresponding calculations in the higher spin theories. This requires evaluating a regularized sum over one loop vacuum energies of an infinite set of massless higher spin gauge fields in Euclidean AdS4. For the Vasiliev theory including fields of all integer spin and a scalar with Delta=1 boundary condition, we show that the regularized sum vanishes. This is in perfect agreement with the vanishing of subleading corrections to F in the U(N) singlet sector of the theory of N free complex scalar fields. For the minimal Vasiliev theory including fields of only even spin, the regularized sum remarkably equals the value of F for one free real scalar field. This result may agree with the O(N) singlet sector of the theory of N real scalar fields, provided the coupling constant in the Vasiliev theory is identified as G_N ~ 1/(N-1). Similarly, consideration of the USp(N) singlet sector for N complex scalar fields, which we conjecture to be dual to the husp(2;0|4) Vasiliev theory, requires G_N ~ 1/(N+1). We also test the higher spin AdS3/CFT2 conjectures by calculating the regularized sum over one loop vacuum energies of higher spin fields in AdS3. We match the result with the O(N^0) term in the central charge of the W_N minimal models; this requires a certain truncation of the CFT operator spectrum so that the bulk theory contains two real scalar fields with the same boundary conditions.

Entanglement Entropy of 3-d Conformal Gauge Theories with Many Flavors

Three-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) of deconfined gauge fields coupled to gapless flavors of fermionic and bosonic matter describe quantum critical points of condensed matter systems in two spatial dimensions. An important characteristic of these CFTs is the finite part of the entanglement entropy across a circle. The negative of this quantity is equal to the finite part of the free energy of the Euclidean CFT on the three-sphere, and it has been proposed to satisfy the so called F-theorem, which states that it decreases under RG flow and is stationary at RG fixed points. We calculate the three-sphere free energy of non-supersymmetric gauge theory with a large number N_F of bosonic and/or fermionic flavors to the first subleading order in 1/N_F. We also calculate the exact free energies of the analogous chiral and non-chiral {\cal N} = 2 supersymmetric theories using localization, and find agreement with the 1/N_F expansion. We analyze some RG flows of supersymmetric theories, providing further evidence for the F-theorem.

Is Renormalized Entanglement Entropy Stationary at RG Fixed Points?

The renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) across a circle of radius R has been proposed as a c-function in Poincaré invariant (2+1)-dimensional field theory. A proof has been presented of its monotonic behavior as a function of R, based on the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy. However, this proof does not directly establish stationarity of REE at conformal fixed points of the renormalization group. In this note we study the REE for the free massive scalar field theory near the UV fixed point described by a massless scalar. Our numerical calculation indicates that the REE is not stationary at the UV fixed point.

On Shape Dependence and RG Flow of Entanglement Entropy

We use a mix of field theoretic and holographic techniques to elucidate various properties of quantum entanglement entropy. In (3+1)-dimensional conformal field theory we study the divergent terms in the entropy when the entangling surface has a conical or a wedge singularity. In (2+1)-dimensional field theory with a mass gap we calculate, for an arbitrary smooth entanglement contour, the expansion of the entropy in inverse odd powers of the mass. We show that the shape-dependent coefficients that arise are even powers of the extrinsic curvature and its derivatives. A useful dual construction of a (2+1)-dimensional theory, which allows us to exhibit these properties, is provided by the CGLP background. This smooth warped throat solution of 11-dimensional supergravity describes renormalization group flow from a conformal field theory in the UV to a gapped one in the IR. For this flow we calculate the recently introduced renormalized entanglement entropy and confirm that it is a monotonic function.

Renyi Entropies for Free Field Theories

Renyi entropies S_q are useful measures of quantum entanglement; they can be calculated from traces of the reduced density matrix raised to power q, with q>=0. For (d+1)-dimensional conformal field theories, the Renyi entropies across S^{d-1} may be extracted from the thermal partition functions of these theories on either (d+1)-dimensional de Sitter space or R x H^d, where H^d is the d-dimensional hyperbolic space. These thermal partition functions can in turn be expressed as path integrals on branched coverings of the (d+1)-dimensional sphere and S^1 x H^d, respectively. We calculate the Renyi entropies of free massless scalars and fermions in d=2, and show how using zeta-function regularization one finds agreement between the calculations on the branched coverings of S^3 and on S^1 x H^2. Analogous calculations for massive free fields provide monotonic interpolating functions between the Renyi entropies at the Gaussian and the trivial fixed points. Finally, we discuss similar Renyi entropy calculations in d>2.

Strange Metals in One Spatial Dimension

We consider 1+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to a multiplet of massive Dirac fermions transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The only global symmetry of this theory is a U(1) associated with the conserved Dirac fermion number, and we study the theory at variable, non-zero densities. The high density limit is characterized by a deconfined Fermi surface state with Fermi wavevector equal to that of free gauge-charged fermions. Its low energy fluctuations are described by a coset conformal field theory with central charge c=(N^2-1)/3 and an emergent N=(2,2) supersymmetry: the U(1) fermion number symmetry becomes an R-symmetry. We determine the exact scaling dimensions of the operators associated with Friedel oscillations and pairing correlations. For N>2, we find that the symmetries allow relevant perturbations to this state. We discuss aspects of the N->infty limit, and its possible dual description in AdS3 involving string theory or higher-spin gauge theory. We also discuss the low density limit of the theory by computing the low lying bound state spectrum of the large N gauge theory numerically at zero density, using discretized light cone quantization.

F-Theorem without Supersymmetry

The conjectured F-theorem for three-dimensional field theories states that the finite part of the free energy on S^3 decreases along RG trajectories and is stationary at the fixed points. In previous work various successful tests of this proposal were carried out for theories with {\cal N}=2 supersymmetry. In this paper we perform more general tests that do not rely on supersymmetry. We study perturbatively the RG flows produced by weakly relevant operators and show that the free energy decreases monotonically. We also consider large N field theories perturbed by relevant double trace operators, free massive field theories, and some Chern-Simons gauge theories. In all cases the free energy in the IR is smaller than in the UV, consistent with the F-theorem. We discuss other odd-dimensional Euclidean theories on S^d and provide evidence that (-1)^{(d-1)/2} \log |Z| decreases along RG flow; in the particular case d=1 this is the well-known g-theorem.

M-Branes and Metastable States

We study a supersymmetry breaking deformation of the M-theory background found in arXiv:hep-th/0012011. The supersymmetric solution is a warped product of R^{2,1} and the 8-dimensional Stenzel space, which is a higher dimensional generalization of the deformed conifold. At the bottom of the warped throat there is a 4-sphere threaded by \tilde{M} units of 4-form flux. The dual (2+1)-dimensional theory has a discrete spectrum of bound states. We add p anti-M2 branes at a point on the 4-sphere, and show that they blow up into an M5-brane wrapping a 3-sphere at a fixed azimuthal angle on the 4-sphere. This supersymmetry breaking state turns out to be metastable for p / \tilde{M} < 0.054. We find a smooth O(3)-symmetric Euclidean bounce solution in the M5-brane world volume theory that describes the decay of the false vacuum. Calculation of the Euclidean action shows that the metastable state is extremely long-lived. We also describe the corresponding metastable states and their decay in the type IIA background obtained by reduction along one of the spatial directions of R^{2,1}.

Multi-Matrix Models and Tri-Sasaki Einstein Spaces

Localization methods reduce the path integrals in {\cal N} >= 2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons gauge theories on S^3 to multi-matrix integrals. A recent evaluation of such a two-matrix integral for the {\cal N}=6 superconformal U(N) x U(N) ABJM theory produced detailed agreement with the AdS/CFT correspondence, explaining, in particular the N^{3/2} scaling of the free energy. We study a class of p-matrix integrals describing {\cal N}=3 superconformal U(N)^p Chern-Simons gauge theories. We present a simple method that allows us to evaluate the eigenvalue densities and the free energies in the large N limit keeping the Chern-Simons levels k_i fixed. The dual M-theory backgrounds are AdS_4 x Y, where Y are seven-dimensional tri-Sasaki Einstein spaces specified by the k_i. The gravitational free energy scales inversely with the square root of the volume of Y. We find a general formula for the p-matrix free energies that agrees with the available results for volumes of the tri-Sasaki Einstein spaces Y, thus providing a thorough test of the corresponding AdS_4/CFT_3 dualities. This formula is consistent with the Seiberg duality conjectured for Chern-Simons gauge theories.

Towards the F-Theorem: N=2 Field Theories on the Three-Sphere

For 3-dimensional field theories with {\cal N}=2 supersymmetry the Euclidean path integrals on the three-sphere can be calculated using the method of localization; they reduce to certain matrix integrals that depend on the R-charges of the matter fields. We solve a number of such large N matrix models and calculate the free energy F as a function of the trial R-charges consistent with the marginality of the superpotential. In all our {\cal N}=2 superconformal examples, the local maximization of F yields answers that scale as N^{3/2} and agree with the dual M-theory backgrounds AdS_4 x Y, where Y are 7-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein spaces. We also find in toric examples that local F-maximization is equivalent to the minimization of the volume of Y over the space of Sasakian metrics, a procedure also referred to as Z-minimization. Moreover, we find that the functions F and Z are related for any trial R-charges. In the models we study F is positive and decreases along RG flows. We therefore propose the "F-theorem" that we hope applies to all 3-d field theories: the finite part of the free energy on the three-sphere decreases along RG trajectories and is stationary at RG fixed points. We also show that in an infinite class of Chern-Simons-matter gauge theories where the Chern-Simons levels do not sum to zero, the free energy grows as N^{5/3} at large N. This non-trivial scaling matches that of the free energy of the gravity duals in type IIA string theory with Romans mass.

Compactification Effects in D-brane Inflation

We determine the scalar potential for a D3-brane in a warped conifold background subject to general ultraviolet perturbations. Incorporating the effects of imaginary anti-self-dual (IASD) fluxes and four-dimensional curvature at the nonlinear level, we compute the leading terms in the D3-brane potential. We then provide strong cross-checks of our results by reproducing them in the dual gauge theory. Finally, we observe that the D3-brane potential induced by nonperturbative effects on D7-branes can be represented by a ten-dimensional supergravity solution containing suitable IASD fluxes. Our method allows for the systematic inclusion of compactification effects and serves to constrain the D3-brane effective action in a large class of stabilized compactifications.

D3-brane Potentials from Fluxes in AdS/CFT

We give a comprehensive treatment of the scalar potential for a D3-brane in a warped conifold region of a compactification with stabilized moduli. By studying general ultraviolet perturbations in supergravity, we systematically incorporate `compactification effects' sourced by supersymmetry breaking in the compact space. Significant contributions to the D3-brane potential, including the leading term in the infrared, arise from imaginary anti-self-dual (IASD) fluxes. For an arbitrary Calabi-Yau cone, we determine the most general IASD fluxes in terms of scalar harmonics, then compute the resulting D3-brane potential. Specializing to the conifold, we identify the operator dual to each mode of flux, and for chiral operators we confirm that the potential computed in the gauge theory matches the gravity result. The effects of four-dimensional curvature, including the leading D3-brane mass term, arise directly from the ten-dimensional equations of motion. Furthermore, we show that gaugino condensation on D7-branes provides a local source for IASD flux. This flux precisely encodes the nonperturbative contributions to the D3-brane potential, yielding a promising ten-dimensional representation of four-dimensional nonperturbative effects. Our result encompasses all significant contributions to the D3-brane potential discussed in the literature, and does so in the single coherent framework of ten-dimensional supergravity. Moreover, we identify new terms with irrational scaling dimensions that were inaccessible in prior works. By decoupling gravity in a noncompact configuration, then systematically reincorporating compactification effects as ultraviolet perturbations, we have provided an approach in which Planck-suppressed contributions to the D3-brane effective action can be computed.

Emergent Quantum Near-Criticality from Baryonic Black Branes

We find new black 3-brane solutions describing the "conifold gauge theory" at nonzero temperature and baryonic chemical potential. Of particular interest is the low-temperature limit where we find a new kind of weakly curved near-horizon geometry; it is a warped product AdS_2 x R^3 x T^{1,1} with warp factors that are powers of the logarithm of the AdS radius. Thus, our solution encodes a new type of emergent quantum near-criticality. We carry out some stability checks for our solutions. We also set up a consistent ansatz for baryonic black 2-branes of M-theory that are asymptotic to AdS_4 x Q^{1,1,1}.

Green's Functions and Non-Singlet Glueballs on Deformed Conifolds

We study the Laplacian on Stenzel spaces (generalized deformed conifolds), which are tangent bundles of spheres endowed with Ricci flat metrics. The (2d-2)-dimensional Stenzel space has SO(d) symmetry and can be embedded in C^d through the equation \sum_{i = 1}^d {z_i^2} = ε^2. We discuss the Green's function with a source at a point on the S^{d-1} zero section of TS^{d-1}. Its calculation is complicated by mixing between different harmonics with the same SO(d) quantum numbers due to the explicit breaking by the ε-deformation of the U(1) symmetry that rotates z_i by a phase. A similar mixing affects the spectrum of normal modes of warped deformed conifolds that appear in gauge/gravity duality. We solve the mixing problem numerically to determine certain bound state spectra in various representations of SO(d) for the d=4 and d=5 examples.

Membranes with Topological Charge and AdS4/CFT3 Correspondence

If the second Betti number b_2 of a Sasaki-Einstein manifold Y^7 does not vanish, then M-theory on AdS_4 x Y^7 possesses "topological" U(1)^{b_2} gauge symmetry. The corresponding Abelian gauge fields come from three-form fluctuations with one index in AdS_4 and the other two in Y^7. We find black membrane solutions carrying one of these U(1) charges. In the zero temperature limit, our solutions interpolate between AdS_4 x Y^7 in the UV and AdS_2 x R^2 x squashed Y^7 in the IR. In fact, the AdS_2 x R^2 x squashed Y^7 background is by itself a solution of the supergravity equations of motion. These solutions do not appear to preserve any supersymmetry. We search for their possible instabilities and do not find any. We also discuss the meaning of our charged membrane backgrounds in a dual quiver Chern-Simons gauge theory with a global U(1) charge density. Finally, we present a simple analytic solution which has the same IR but different UV behavior. We reduce this solution to type IIA string theory, and perform T-duality to type IIB. The type IIB metric turns out to be a product of the squashed Y^7 and the extremal BTZ black hole. We discuss an interpretation of this type IIB background in terms of the (1+1)-dimensional CFT on D3-branes partially wrapped over the squashed Y^7.

Charges of Monopole Operators in Chern-Simons Yang-Mills Theory

We calculate the non-abelian R-charges of BPS monopole operators in three-dimensional gauge theories with N=3 supersymmetry. This class of models includes ABJM theory, the proposed gauge theory dual of M-theory on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k, as a special case. In the UV limit of the N=3 theories the Yang-Mills coupling becomes weak and the monopole operators are described by classical backgrounds. This allows us to find their SU(2)_R charges in a one-loop computation which by virtue of the non-renormalization of non-abelian R-charges yields the exact result for any value of the coupling. The spectrum of SU(2)_R charges is found by quantizing the SU(2)/U(1) collective coordinate of the BPS background, whose dynamics is that of a charged particle on a sphere with a Wess-Zumino term representing a magnetic monopole at its center. If the Wess-Zumino coefficient is h, then the smallest possible SU(2)_R representation for BPS monopole operators has spin |h|/2. We find, in agreement with earlier proposals, that h is proportional to the sum of the U(1)_R charges of all the fermion fields weighted by the effective monopole charges determined by their gauge representations. The field content of ABJM theory is such that h=0. This proves for any Chern-Simons level k the existence of monopole operators which are singlets under all global symmetries and have vanishing scaling dimensions. These operators are essential for matching the spectrum of the ABJM theory with supergravity and for the supersymmetry enhancement to N=8.

The Squashed, Stretched, and Warped Gets Perturbed

We use direct Kaluza-Klein reduction to calculate the spectrum of spin-2 modes around a warped product of AdS_4 and a certain squashed and stretched 7-sphere. The modes turn out to be polynomials in the four complex variables parameterizing the sphere, and their complex conjugates. The background, which possesses U(1)_R x SU(3) symmetry, has been conjectured to be dual to a U(N) x U(N) N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons theory with a sextic superpotential. We find that the U(1)_R x SU(3) quantum numbers of spin-2 modes are in agreement with those determined in arXiv:0809.3773 through a group theoretic method, and with the spectrum of spin-2 gauge invariant operators in the Chern-Simons gauge theory. The mass-squared in AdS_4 is found to be quadratic in these quantum numbers and the Kaluza-Klein excitation number. Most of the spin-2 operators belong to long multiplets, and we determine their dimensions via the AdS/CFT correspondence.

On Normal Modes of a Warped Throat

As shown in arXiv:hep-th/0405282, the warped deformed conifold has two bosonic massless modes, a pseudoscalar and a scalar, that are dual to the phase and the modulus of the baryonic condensates in the cascading gauge theory. We reconsider the scalar mode sector, mixing fluctuations of the NS-NS 2-form and the metric, and include non-zero 4-d momentum $k_μ$. The resulting pair of coupled equations produce a discrete spectrum of $m_4^2=- k_μ^2$ which is interpreted as the spectrum of $J^{PC}= 0^{+-}$ glueballs in the gauge theory. Similarly, we derive the spectrum of certain pseudoscalar glueballs with $J^{PC}= 0^{--}$, which originate from the decoupled fluctuations of the RR 2-form. We argue that each of the massive scalar or pseudoscalar modes we find belongs to a 4-d massive axial vector or vector supermultiplet. We also discuss our results in the context of a finite length throat embedded into a type IIB flux compactification.

Towards an Explicit Model of D-brane Inflation

We present a detailed analysis of an explicit model of warped D-brane inflation, incorporating the effects of moduli stabilization. We consider the potential for D3-brane motion in a warped conifold background that includes fluxes and holomorphically-embedded D7-branes involved in moduli stabilization. Although the D7-branes significantly modify the inflaton potential, they do not correct the quadratic term in the potential, and hence do not cause a uniform change in the slow-roll parameter eta. Nevertheless, we present a simple example based on the Kuperstein embedding of D7-branes, z_1=constant, in which the potential can be fine-tuned to be sufficiently flat for inflation. To derive this result, it is essential to incorporate the fact that the compactification volume changes slightly as the D3-brane moves. We stress that the compactification geometry dictates certain relationships among the parameters in the inflaton Lagrangian, and these microscopic constraints impose severe restrictions on the space of possible models. We note that the shape of the final inflaton potential differs from projections given in earlier studies: in configurations where inflation occurs, it does so near an inflection point. Finally, we comment on the difficulty of making precise cosmological predictions in this scenario. This is the companion paper to arXiv:0705.3837.

On D3-brane Potentials in Compactifications with Fluxes and Wrapped D-branes

We study the potential governing D3-brane motion in a warped throat region of a string compactification with internal fluxes and wrapped D-branes. If the Kahler moduli of the compact space are stabilized by nonperturbative effects, a D3-brane experiences a force due to its interaction with D-branes wrapping certain four-cycles. We compute this interaction, as a correction to the warped four-cycle volume, using explicit throat backgrounds in supergravity. This amounts to a closed-string channel computation of the loop corrections to the nonperturbative superpotential that stabilizes the volume. We demonstrate for warped conical spaces that the superpotential correction is given by the embedding equation specifying the wrapped four-cycle, in agreement with the general form proposed by Ganor. Our approach automatically provides a solution to the problem of defining a holomorphic gauge coupling on wrapped D7-branes in a background with D3-branes. Finally, our results have applications to cosmological inflation models in which the inflaton is modeled by a D3-brane moving in a warped throat.

Is Theta+(1540) a Kaon--Skyrmion Resonance?

We reconsider the relationship between the bound state and the SU(3) rigid rotator approaches to strangeness in the Skyrme model. For non-exotic S=-1 baryons the bound state approach matches for small m_K onto the rigid rotator approach, and the bound state mode turns into the rotator zero-mode. However, for small m_K, we find no S=+1 kaon bound states or resonances in the spectrum, confirming previous work. This suggests that, at least for large N and small m_K, the exotic state may be an artifact of the rigid rotator approach to the Skyrme model. An S=+1 near-threshold state comes into existence only for sufficiently large SU(3) breaking. If such a state exists, then it has the expected quantum numbers of Theta+: I=0, J=1/2 and positive parity. Other exotic states with (I=1, J^P=3/2+), (I=1,J^P=1/2+), (I=2, J^P=5/2+) and (I=2,J^P=3/2+) appear as its SU(2) rotator excitations. As a test of our methods, we also identify a D-wave S=-1 near-threshold resonance that, upon SU(2) collective coordinate quantization, reproduces the mass splittings of the observed states Lambda(1520), Sigma(1670) and Sigma(1775) with good accuracy.

Prospects for Pentaquark Production at Meson Factories

Following Rosner [hep-ph/0312269], we consider B-decay production channels for the exotic I=0 and $I=3/2$ pentaquarks that have been recently reported. We also discuss new search channels for isovector pentaquarks, such as the $Θ^{*++} (\bar s duuu)$, that are generically present in chiral soliton models but were not observed in recent experiments. Futhermore, we argue that weak decays of charmed baryons, such as the $Λ_c^+$ and $Ξ_c^0$, provide another clean way of detecting exotic baryons made of light quarks only. We also discuss discovery channels for charmed pentaquarks, such as the isosinglet $Θ_c^0 (\bar c udud)$, in weak decays of bottom mesons and baryons. Finally, we discuss prospects for inclusive production of pentaquarks in $e^+ e^-$ collisions, with associated production of particles carrying the opposite baryon number.

Proton Decay in Intersecting D-brane Models

We analyze proton decay via dimension six operators in certain GUT-like models derived from Type IIA orientifolds with $D6$-branes. The amplitude is parametrically enhanced by a factor of $α_{GUT}^{-1/3}$ relative to the coresponding result in four-dimensional GUT's. Nonetheless, even assuming a plausible enhancement from the threshold corrections, we find little overall enhancement of the proton decay rate from dimension six operators, so that the predicted lifetime from this mechanism remains close to $10^{36}$ years.

A universal result on central charges in the presence of double-trace deformations

We study large N conformal field theories perturbed by relevant double-trace deformations. Using the auxiliary field trick, or Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, we show that in the infrared the theory flows to another CFT. The generating functionals of planar correlators in the ultraviolet and infrared CFT's are shown to be related by a Legendre transform. Our main result is a universal expression for the difference of the scale anomalies between the ultraviolet and infrared fixed points, which is of order 1 in the large N expansion. Our computations are entirely field theoretic, and the results are shown to agree with predictions from AdS/CFT. We also remark that a certain two-point function can be computed for all energy scales on both sides of the duality, with full agreement between the two and no scheme dependence.

1+1 Dimensional NCOS and its U(N) Gauge Theory Dual

We study some aspects of open string theories on D-branes with critical electric fields. We show that the massless open string modes that move in the direction of the electric field decouple. In the 1+1 dimensional case the dual theory is U(N) SYM with electric flux, and the decoupling of massless open strings is dual to the decoupling of the U(1) degrees of freedom. We also show that, if the direction along the electric field is compact, then there are finite energy winding closed string modes. They are dual to Higgs branch excitations of the SYM theory, and their energetics works accordingly. These properties provide new non-trivial evidence for the duality.

Supergravity and a Confining Gauge Theory: Duality Cascades and $χ$SB-Resolution of Naked Singularities

We revisit the singular IIB supergravity solution describing M fractional 3-branes on the conifold [hep-th/0002159]. Its 5-form flux decreases, which we explain by showing that the relevant \NN=1 SUSY SU(N+M)xSU(N) gauge theory undergoes repeated Seiberg-duality transformations in which N -> N-M. Far in the IR the gauge theory confines; its chiral symmetry breaking removes the singularity of hep-th/0002159 by deforming the conifold. We propose a non-singular pure-supergravity background dual to the field theory on all scales, with small curvature everywhere if the `t Hooft coupling g_s M is large. In the UV it approaches that of hep-th/0002159, incorporating the logarithmic flow of couplings. In the IR the deformation of the conifold gives a geometrical realization of chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. We suggest that pure \NN=1 Yang-Mills may be dual to strings propagating at small g_s M on a warped deformed conifold. We note also that the standard model itself may lie at the base of a duality cascade.

The Hagedorn transition in non-commutative open string theory

The Hagedorn transition in non-commutative open string theory (NCOS) is relatively simple because gravity decouples. For NCOS theories in no more than five spacetime dimensions, the Hagedorn transition is second order, and the high temperature phase involves long, nearly straight fundamental strings separating from the D-brane on which the NCOS theory is defined. Above five spacetime dimensions interaction effects become important below the Hagedorn temperature. Although this complicates studies of the transition, we believe that the high temperature phase again involves long strings liberated from the bound state.

AdS/CFT Correspondence and Symmetry Breaking

We study, using the dual AdS description, the vacua of field theories where some of the gauge symmetry is broken by expectation values of scalar fields. In such vacua, operators built out of the scalar fields acquire expectation values, and we show how to calculate them from the behavior of perturbations to the AdS background near the boundary. Specific examples include the ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory, and theories on D3 branes placed on orbifolds and conifolds. We also clarify some subtleties of the AdS/CFT correspondence that arise in this analysis. In particular, we explain how scalar fields in AdS space of sufficiently negative mass-squared can be associated with CFT operators of {\it two} possible dimensions. All dimensions are bounded from below by $(d-2)/2$; this is the unitarity bound for scalar operators in $d$-dimensional field theory. We further argue that the generating functional for correlators in the theory with one choice of operator dimension is a Legendre transform of the generating functional in the theory with the other choice.

Baryons and Domain Walls in an N = 1 Superconformal Gauge Theory

Coincident D3-branes placed at a conical singularity are related to string theory on $AdS_5\times X_5$, for a suitable five-dimensional Einstein manifold $X_5$. For the example of the conifold, which leads to $X_5=T^{1,1}=(SU(2)\times SU(2))/U(1)$, the infrared limit of the theory on $N$ D3-branes was constructed recently. This is ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to four bifundamental chiral superfields and supplemented by a quartic superpotential which becomes marginal in the infrared. In this paper we consider D3-branes wrapped over the 3-cycles of $T^{1,1}$ and identify them with baryon-like chiral operators built out of products of $N$ chiral superfields. The supergravity calculation of the dimensions of such operators agrees with field theory. We also study the D5-brane wrapped over a 2-cycle of $T^{1,1}$, which acts as a domain wall in $AdS_5$. We argue that upon crossing it the gauge group changes to $SU(N)\times SU(N+1)$. This suggests a construction of supergravity duals of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(N_1)\times SU(N_2)$ gauge theories.

Just as parallel threebranes on a smooth manifold are related to string theory on $AdS_5\times {\bf S}^5$, parallel threebranes near a conical singularity are related to string theory on $AdS_5\times X_5$, for a suitable $X_5$. For the example of the conifold singularity, for which $X_5=(SU(2)\times SU(2))/U(1)$, we argue that string theory on $AdS_5\times X_5$ can be described by a certain ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory which we describe in detail.

Absorption by Branes and Schwinger Terms in the World Volume Theory

We study how coincident Dirichlet 3-branes absorb incident gravitons polarized along their world volume. We show that the absorption cross-section is determined by the central term in the correlator of two stress-energy tensors. The existence of a non-renormalization theorem for this central charge in four-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories shows that the leading term at low energies in the absorption cross-section is not renormalized. This guarantees that the agreement of the cross-section with semiclassical supergravity, found in earlier work, survives all loop corrections. The connection between absorption of gravitons polarized along the brane and Schwinger terms in the stress-energy correlators of the world volume theory holds in general. We explore this connection to deduce some properties of the stress-energy tensor OPE's for 2-branes and 5-branes in 11 dimensions, as well as for 5-branes in 10 dimensions.

Black Hole Greybody Factors and Absorption of Scalars by Effective Strings

We compute the greybody factors for classical black holes in a domain where two kinds of charges and their anticharges are excited by the extra energy over extremality. We compare the result to the greybody factors expected from an effective string model which was earlier shown to give the correct entropy. In the regime where the left and right moving temperatures are much smaller than the square root of the effective string tension, we find a non-trivial greybody factor which agrees with the effective string model. However, if the temperatures are comparable with the square root of the effective string tension, the greybody factors agree only at the leading order in energy. Nevertheless, there are several interesting relations between the two results, suggesting that a modification of the effective string model might lead to better agreement.

Testing Effective String Models of Black Holes with Fixed Scalars

We solve the problem of mixing between the fixed scalar and metric fluctuations. First, we derive the decoupled fixed scalar equation for the four-dimensional black hole with two different charges. We proceed to the five-dimensional black hole with different electric (1-brane) and magnetic (5-brane) charges, and derive two decoupled equations satisfied by appropriate mixtures of the original fixed scalar fields. The resulting greybody factors are proportional to those that follow from coupling to dimension (2,2) operators on the effective string. In general, however, the string action also contains couplings to chiral operators of dimension (1,3) and (3,1), which cause disagreements with the semiclassical absorption cross-sections. Implications of this for the effective string models are discussed.

The Spectrum of a Large N Gauge Theory Near Transition from Confinement to Screening

We study the spectrum of 1+1 dimensional large $N$ QCD coupled to an adjoint Majorana fermion of mass $m$. As $m\to 0$ this model makes a transition from confinement to screening. We argue that in this limit the spectrum becomes continuous for mass greater than twice the mass of the lightest bound state. This critical mass is nothing but the threshold for a decay into two lightest states. We present numerical results based on DLCQ that appear to support our claim.

Decay of Excited D-branes

We calculate the leading order interactions of massless D-brane excitations. Their 4-point functions are found to be identical to those found in type I theory. The amplitude for two massless D-brane fluctuations to produce a massless closed string is found to possess interesting new structure. As a function of its single kinematic invariant, it displays an infinite sequence of alternating zeros and poles. At high transverse momenta, this amplitude decays exponentially, indicating a growing effective thickness of the D-brane. This amplitude is the leading process by which non-extremal D-branes produce Hawking radiation.

Emission of charged particles from four- and five-dimensional black holes

Recently Das and Mathur found that the leading order Hawking emission rate of neutral scalars by near-extremal $D=5$ black holes is exactly reproduced by a string theoretic model involving intersecting D-branes. We show that the agreement continues to hold for charged scalar emission. We further show that similar agreement can be obtained for a class of near-extremal $D=4$ black holes using a model inspired by M-theory. In this model, BPS saturated $D=4$ black holes with four charges are realized in M-theory as 5-branes triply intersecting over a string. The low-energy excitations are signals traveling on the intersection string.

Fixed scalar greybody factors in five and four dimensions

We perform the classical gravity calculations of the fixed scalar absorption cross-sections by D=5 black holes with three charges and by D=4 black holes with four charges. We obtain analytic results for the cases where the energy and the left and right moving temperatures are sufficiently low but have arbitrary ratios. In D=5 the greybody factor is in perfect agreement with the recent calculation performed in the context of the effective string model for black holes. In D=4 the formula for the greybody factor in terms of the energy and the temperatures differs from that in D=5 only by the overall normalization. This suggests that the fixed scalar coupling to the effective string in D=4 is identical to that in D=5.

We construct the open string boundary states corresponding to various time-dependent deformations of the D-brane and explore several ways in which they may be used to study stringy soliton collective coordinate quantum dynamics. Among other things, we find that D-strings have exact moduli corresponding to arbitrary chiral excitations of the basic soliton. These are presumably the duals of the BPS-saturated excitations of the fundamental Type IIB string. These first steps in a systematic study of the dynamics and interactions of Dirichlet-brane solitons give further evidence of the consistency of Polchinski's new approach to string soliton physics.

Touching Random Surfaces and Liouville Gravity

Large $N$ matrix models modified by terms of the form $ g(\TrΦ^n)^2$ generate random surfaces which touch at isolated points. Matrix model results indicate that, as $g$ is increased to a special value $g_t$, the string susceptibility exponent suddenly jumps from its conventional value $γ$ to ${γ\overγ-1}$. We study this effect in Ł gravity and attribute it to a change of the interaction term from $O e^{α_+ ϕ}$ for $g<g_t$ to $O e^{α_- ϕ}$ for $g=g_t$ ($α_+$ and $α_-$ are the two roots of the conformal invariance condition for the Ł dressing of a matter operator $O$). Thus, the new critical behavior is explained by the unconventional branch of Ł dressing in the action.
