Four-point function of the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model at finite chemical potential

It is known that, for a range of chemical potentials, the infrared behavior of the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (cSYK) model is governed by a 1D Nearly Conformal Field Theory (NCFT$_{1}$), thereby realizing a continuous line of NCFTs. A finite chemical potential $μ$ introduces an asymmetry parameter $\mathscr{E}$ into the cSYK fermion two-point function in the conformal limit. In this work, we compute the cSYK four-point function in the conformal limit for an arbitrary value of $\mathscr{E}$ at leading order in $1/N$. We show that the result is fully consistent with the NCFT$_{1}$ structure of the cSYK model and use it to extract the structure constants for correlation functions of two complex fermions with bilinear operators.

Excitation spectra of quantum matter without quasiparticles I: Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

We study the low frequency spectra of complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models at general densities. The analysis applies also to SU($M$) magnets with random exchange at large $M$. The spectral densities are computed by numerical analysis of the saddle point equations on the real frequency ($ω$) axis at zero temperature ($T$). The asymptotic low $ω$ behaviors are found to be in excellent agreement with the scaling dimensions of irrelevant operators which perturb the conformally invariant critical states. Of possible experimental interest is our computation of the universal spin spectral weight of the SU($M$) magnets at low $ω$ and $T$: this includes a contribution from the time reparameterization mode, which is the boundary graviton of the holographic dual. This analysis is extended to a random $t$-$J$ model in a companion paper.

Deconfined critical point in a doped random quantum Heisenberg magnet

We describe the phase diagram of electrons on a fully connected lattice with random hopping, subject to a random Heisenberg spin exchange interactions between any pair of sites and a constraint of no double occupancy. A perturbative renormalization group analysis yields a critical point with fractionalized excitations at a non-zero critical value $p_c$ of the hole doping $p$ away from the half-filled insulator. We compute the renormalization group to two loops, but some exponents are obtained to all loop order. We argue that the critical point $p_c$ is flanked by confining phases: a disordered Fermi liquid with carrier density $1+p$ for $p>p_c$, and a metallic spin glass with carrier density $p$ for $p<p_c$. Additional evidence for the critical behavior is obtained from a large $M$ analysis of a model which extends the SU(2) spin symmetry to SU($M$). We discuss the relationship of the vicinity of this deconfined quantum critical point to key aspects of cuprate phenomenology.

Excitation spectra of quantum matter without quasiparticles II: random $t$-$J$ models

We present numerical solutions of the spectral functions of $t$-$J$ models with random and all-to-all exchange and global SU($M$) spin rotation symmetry. The solutions are obtained from the saddle-point equations of the large volume limit, followed by the large $M$ limit. These saddle point equations involve Green's functions for fractionalized spinons and holons carrying emergent U(1) gauge charges, obeying relations similar to those of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models. The low frequency spectral functions are compared with an analytic analysis of the operator scaling dimensions, with good agreement. We also compute the low frequency and temperature behavior of gauge-invariant observables: the electron Green's function, the local spin susceptibility and the optical conductivity; along with the temperature dependence of the d.c. resistivity. The time reparameterization soft mode (equivalent to the boundary graviton in holographically dual models of two-dimensional quantum gravity) makes important contributions to all observables, and provides a linear-in-temperature contribution to the d.c. resistivity.

Fractional Chern Insulator States in Twisted Bilayer Graphene: An Analytical Approach

Recent experiments on bilayer graphene twisted near the magic angle have observed spontaneous integer quantum Hall states in the presence of an aligned hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate. These states arise from valley ferromagnetism, and the complete filling of Chern bands. A natural question is whether fractional filling of the same bands would lead to fractional quantum Hall states, i.e. to fractional Chern insulators (FCIs). Here, we argue that the magic angle graphene bands have favorable quantum geometry for realizing FCI phases. We show that in the tractable `chiral' limit, the flat bands wavefunctions are an analytic function of the crystal momentum. This remarkable property fixes the quantum metric up to an overall momentum dependent scale factor, the local Berry curvature, whose variation is itself small. Thus the three conditions associated with FCI stability (i) narrow bands (ii) quantum metric satisfying the isotropic ideal droplet condition and (iii) relatively uniform Berry curvature are all satisfied. Our work emphasizes continuum real space approaches to FCIs in contrast to earlier works which mostly focused on tight binding models. This enables us to construct a Laughlin wavefunction on a real-space torus that is a zero energy ground state of pseudopotential-like interactions. The latter can be realized for Coulomb interaction in the limit of very short screening length. We also map the problem onto an equivalent one of Dirac particles in an inhomogeneous but periodic magnetic field and no crystal potential. Finally we discuss evolution of the band geometry on tuning away from the chiral limit and show numerically that some of the desirable properties continue to hold at a quantitative level for realistic parameter values.

Metal-insulator transition in a random Hubbard model

We examine the metal-insulator transition in a half-filled Hubbard model of electrons with random and all-to-all hopping and exchange, and an on-site non-random repulsion, the Hubbard $U$. We argue that recent numerical results of Cha et al. (arXiv:2002.07181) can be understood in terms of a deconfined critical point between a disordered Fermi liquid and an insulating spin glass. We find a deconfined critical point in a previously proposed large $M$ theory which generalizes the SU(2) spin symmetry to SU($M$), and obtain exponents for the electron and spin correlators which agree with those of Cha et al. We also present a renormalization group analysis, and argue for the presence of an additional metallic spin glass phase at half-filling and small $U$.

The $O(N)$ Model in $4<d<6$: Instantons and Complex CFTs

We revisit the scalar $O(N)$ model in the dimension range $4<d<6$ and study the effects caused by its metastability. As shown in previous work, this model formally possesses a fixed point where, perturbatively in the $1/N$ expansion, the operator scaling dimensions are real and above the unitarity bound. Here, we further show that these scaling dimensions do acquire small imaginary parts due to the instanton effects. In $d$ dimensions and for large $N$, we find that they are of order $e^{-N f(d)}$, where, remarkably, the function $f(d)$ equals the sphere free energy of a conformal scalar in $d-2$ dimensions. The non-perturbatively small imaginary parts also appear in other observables, such as the sphere free energy and two and three-point function coefficients, and we present some of their calculations. Therefore, at sufficiently large $N$, the $O(N)$ models in $4<d<6$ may be thought of as complex CFTs. When $N$ is large enough for the imaginary parts to be numerically negligible, the five-dimensional $O(N)$ models may be studied using the techniques of numerical bootstrap.

On $C_{J}$ and $C_{T}$ in Conformal QED

QED with a large number $N$ of massless fermionic degrees of freedom has a conformal phase in a range of space-time dimensions. We use a large $N$ diagrammatic approach to calculate the leading corrections to $C_T$, the coefficient of the two-point function of the stress-energy tensor, and $C_J$, the coefficient of the two-point function of the global symmetry current. We present explicit formulae as a function of $d$ and check them versus the expectations in 2 and $4-ε$ dimensions. Using our results in higher even dimensions we find a concise formula for $C_T$ of the conformal Maxwell theory with higher derivative action $F_{μν} (-\nabla^2)^{\frac{d}{2}-2} F^{μν}$. In $d=3$, QED has a topological symmetry current, and we calculate the correction to its two-point function coefficient, $C^{\textrm{top}}_{J}$. We also show that some RG flows involving QED in $d=3$ obey $C_T^{\rm UV} > C_T^{\rm IR}$ and discuss possible implications of this inequality for the symmetry breaking at small values of $N$.

On $C_J$ and $C_T$ in the Gross-Neveu and $O(N)$ Models

We apply large $N$ diagrammatic techniques for theories with double-trace interactions to the leading corrections to $C_J$, the coefficient of a conserved current two-point function, and $C_T$, the coefficient of the stress-energy tensor two-point function. We study in detail two famous conformal field theories in continuous dimensions, the scalar $O(N)$ model and the Gross-Neveu model. For the $O(N)$ model, where the answers for the leading large $N$ corrections to $C_J$ and $C_T$ were derived long ago using analytic bootstrap, we show that the diagrammatic approach reproduces them correctly. We also carry out a new perturbative test of these results using the $O(N)$ symmetric cubic scalar theory in $6-ε$ dimensions. We go on to apply the diagrammatic method to the Gross-Neveu model, finding explicit formulae for the leading corrections to $C_J$ and $C_T$ as a function of dimension. We check these large $N$ results using regular perturbation theory for the Gross-Neveu model in $2+ε$ dimensions and the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model in $4-ε$ dimensions. For small values of $N$, we use Pade approximants based on the $4-ε$ and $2+ε$ expansions to estimate the values of $C_J$ and $C_T$ in $d=3$. For the $O(N)$ model our estimates are close to those found using the conformal bootstrap. For the GN model, our estimates suggest that, even when $N$ is small, $C_T$ differs by no more than $2\%$ from that in the theory of free fermions. We find that the inequality $C_T^{\textrm{UV}} > C_T^{\textrm{IR}}$ applies both to the GN and the scalar $O(N)$ models in $d=3$.

Conformal QED$_d$, $F$-Theorem and the $ε$ Expansion

We calculate the free energies $F$ for $U(1)$ gauge theories on the $d$ dimensional sphere of radius $R$. For the theory with free Maxwell action we find the exact result as a function of $d$; it contains the term $\frac{d-4}{2} \log R$ consistent with the lack of conformal invariance in dimensions other than 4. When the $U(1)$ gauge theory is coupled to a sufficient number $N_f$ of massless 4 component fermions, it acquires an interacting conformal phase, which in $d<4$ describes the long distance behavior of the model. The conformal phase can be studied using large $N_f$ methods. Generalizing the $d=3$ calculation in arXiv:1112.5342, we compute its sphere free energy as a function of $d$, ignoring the terms of order $1/N_f$ and higher. For finite $N_f$, following arXiv:1409.1937 and arXiv:1507.01960, we develop the $4-ε$ expansion for the sphere free energy of conformal QED$_d$. Its extrapolation to $d=3$ shows very good agreement with the large $N_f$ approximation for $N_f>3$. For $N_f$ at or below some critical value $N_{\rm crit}$, the $SU(2N_f)$ symmetric conformal phase of QED$_3$ is expected to disappear or become unstable. By using the $F$-theorem and comparing the sphere free energies in the conformal and broken symmetry phases, we show that $N_{\rm crit}\leq 4$. As another application of our results, we calculate the one loop beta function in conformal QED$_6$, where the gauge field has a 4-derivative kinetic term. We show that this theory coupled to $N_f$ massless fermions is asymptotically free.

Critical $Sp(N)$ Models in $6-ε$ Dimensions and Higher Spin dS/CFT

Theories of anti-commuting scalar fields are non-unitary, but they are of interest both in statistical mechanics and in studies of the higher spin de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory correspondence. We consider an $Sp(N)$ invariant theory of $N$ anti-commuting scalars and one commuting scalar, which has cubic interactions and is renormalizable in 6 dimensions. For any even $N$ we find an IR stable fixed point in $6-ε$ dimensions at imaginary values of coupling constants. Using calculations up to three loop order, we develop $ε$ expansions for several operator dimensions and for the sphere free energy $F$. The conjectured $F$-theorem is obeyed in spite of the non-unitarity of the theory. The $1/N$ expansion in the $Sp(N)$ theory is related to that in the corresponding $O(N)$ symmetric theory by the change of sign of $N$. Our results point to the existence of interacting non-unitary 5-dimensional CFTs with $Sp(N)$ symmetry, where operator dimensions are real. We conjecture that these CFTs are dual to the minimal higher spin theory in 6-dimensional de Sitter space with Neumann future boundary conditions on the scalar field. For $N=2$ we show that the IR fixed point possesses an enhanced global symmetry given by the supergroup $OSp(1|2)$. This suggests the existence of $OSp(1|2)$ symmetric CFTs in dimensions smaller than 6. We show that the $6-ε$ expansions of the scaling dimensions and sphere free energy in our $OSp(1|2)$ model are the same as in the $q \rightarrow 0$ limit of the $q$-state Potts model.

Generalized $F$-Theorem and the $ε$ Expansion

Some known constraints on Renormalization Group flow take the form of inequalities: in even dimensions they refer to the coefficient $a$ of the Weyl anomaly, while in odd dimensions to the sphere free energy $F$. In recent work arXiv:1409.1937 it was suggested that the $a$- and $F$-theorems may be viewed as special cases of a Generalized $F$-Theorem valid in continuous dimension. This conjecture states that, for any RG flow from one conformal fixed point to another, $\tilde F_{\rm UV} > \tilde F_{\rm IR}$, where $\tilde F=\sin (πd/2)\log Z_{S^d}$. Here we provide additional evidence in favor of the Generalized $F$-Theorem. We show that it holds in conformal perturbation theory, i.e. for RG flows produced by weakly relevant operators. We also study a specific example of the Wilson-Fisher $O(N)$ model and define this CFT on the sphere $S^{4-ε}$, paying careful attention to the beta functions for the coefficients of curvature terms. This allows us to develop the $ε$ expansion of $\tilde F$ up to order $ε^5$. Pade extrapolation of this series to $d=3$ gives results that are around $2-3\%$ below the free field values for small $N$. We also study RG flows which include an anisotropic perturbation breaking the $O(N)$ symmetry; we again find that the results are consistent with $\tilde F_{\rm UV} > \tilde F_{\rm IR}$.

Three Loop Analysis of the Critical $O(N)$ Models in $6-ε$ Dimensions

We continue the study, initiated in arXiv:1404.1094, of the $O(N)$ symmetric theory of $N+1$ massless scalar fields in $6-ε$ dimensions. This theory has cubic interaction terms $\frac{1}{2}g_1 σ(ϕ^i)^2 + \frac{1}{6}g_2 σ^3$. We calculate the 3-loop beta functions for the two couplings and use them to determine certain operator scaling dimensions at the IR stable fixed point up to order $ε^3$. We also use the beta functions to determine the corrections to the critical value of $N$ below which there is no fixed point at real couplings. The result suggests a very significant reduction in the critical value as the dimension is decreased to $5$. We also study the theory with $N=1$, which has a $Z_2$ symmetry under $ϕ\rightarrow -ϕ$. We show that it possesses an IR stable fixed point at imaginary couplings which can be reached by flow from a nearby fixed point describing a pair of $N=0$ theories. We calculate certain operator scaling dimensions at the IR fixed point of the $N=1$ theory and suggest that, upon continuation to two dimensions, it describes a non-unitary conformal minimal model.

AdS Description of Induced Higher-Spin Gauge Theory

We study deformations of three-dimensional large N CFTs by double-trace operators constructed from spin s single-trace operators of dimension Δ. These theories possess UV fixed points, and we calculate the change of the 3-sphere free energy δF= F_{UV}- F_{IR}. To describe the UV fixed point using the dual AdS_4 space we modify the boundary conditions on the spin s field in the bulk; this approach produces δF in agreement with the field theory calculations. If the spin s operator is a conserved current, then the fixed point is described by an induced parity invariant conformal spin s gauge theory. The low spin examples are QED_3 (s=1) and the 3-d induced conformal gravity (s=2). When the original CFT is that of N conformal complex scalar or fermion fields, the U(N) singlet sector of the induced 3-d gauge theory is dual to Vasiliev's theory in AdS_4 with alternate boundary conditions on the spin s massless gauge field. We test this correspondence by calculating the leading term in δF for large N. We show that the coefficient of (1/2)\log N in δF is equal to the number of spin s-1 gauge parameters that act trivially on the spin s gauge field. We discuss generalizations of these results to 3-d gauge theories including Chern-Simons terms and to theories where s is half-integer. We also argue that the Weyl anomaly a-coefficients of conformal spin s theories in even dimensions d, such as that of the Weyl-squared gravity in d=4, can be efficiently calculated using massless spin s fields in AdS_{d+1} with alternate boundary conditions. Using this method we derive a simple formula for the Weyl anomaly a-coefficients of the d=4 Fradkin-Tseytlin conformal higher-spin gauge fields. Similarly, using alternate boundary conditions in AdS_3 we reproduce the well-known central charge c=-26 of the bc ghosts in 2-d gravity, as well as its higher-spin generalizations.
