The $\mathcal{N} = 2$ Prepotential and the Sphere Free Energy

We study the mass-deformed sphere free energy of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal field theories with holographic duals. Building on previous observations, we conjecture a proportionality relation between the sphere free energy on the boundary and the prepotential of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supergravity theory in the bulk. We verify this formula by explicit computation in several examples of supergravity theories with vector multiplets and hypermultiplets.

The Holographic Contributions to the Sphere Free Energy

We study which bulk couplings contribute to the $S^3$ free energy $F(\mathfrak{m})$ of three-dimensional ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal field theories with holographic duals, potentially deformed by boundary real-mass parameters $\mathfrak{m}$. In particular, we show that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ is independent of a large class of bulk couplings that include non-chiral F-terms and all D-terms. On the other hand, in general, $F(\mathfrak{m})$ does depend non-trivially on bulk chiral F-terms, such as prepotential interactions, and on bulk real-mass terms. These conclusions can be reached solely from properties of the AdS super-algebra, $\mathfrak{osp}(2|4)$. We also consider massive vector multiplets in AdS, which in the dual field theory correspond to long single-trace superconformal multiplets of spin zero. We provide evidence that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ is insensitive to the vector multiplet mass and to the interaction couplings between the massive vector multiplet and massless ones. In particular, this implies that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ does not contain information about scaling dimensions or OPE coefficients of single-trace long scalar ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal multiplets.

A Bispinor Formalism for Spinning Witten Diagrams

We develop a new embedding-space formalism for AdS$_4$ and CFT$_3$ that is useful for evaluating Witten diagrams for operators with spin. The basic variables are Killing spinors for the bulk AdS$_4$ and conformal Killing spinors for the boundary CFT$_3$. The more conventional embedding space coordinates $X^I$ for the bulk and $P^I$ for the boundary are bilinears in these new variables. We write a simple compact form for the general bulk-boundary propagator, and, for boundary operators of spin $\ell \geq 1$, we determine its conservation properties at the unitarity bound. In our CFT$_3$ formalism, we identify an $\mathfrak{so}(5,5)$ Lie algebra of differential operators that includes the basic weight-shifting operators. These operators, together with a set of differential operators in AdS$_4$, can be used to relate Witten diagrams with spinning external legs to Witten diagrams with only scalar external legs. We provide several applications that include Compton scattering and the evaluation of an $R^4$ contact interaction in AdS$_4$. Finally, we derive bispinor formulas for the bulk-to-bulk propagators of massive spinor and vector gauge fields and evaluate a diagram with spinor exchange.

Far Beyond the Planar Limit in Strongly-Coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

When the $SU(N)$ ${\cal N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory with complexified gauge coupling $τ$ is placed on a round four-sphere and deformed by an ${\cal N} = 2$-preserving mass parameter $m$, its free energy $F(m, τ, \bar τ)$ can be computed exactly using supersymmetric localization. In this work, we derive a new exact relation between the fourth derivative $\partial_m^4 F(m, τ, \bar τ) \big|_{m=0}$ of the sphere free energy and the integrated stress-tensor multiplet four-point function in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. We then apply this exact relation, along with various other constraints derived in previous work (coming from analytic bootstrap, the mixed derivative $\partial_τ\partial_{\bar τ} \partial_m^2 F(m, τ, \bar τ) \big|_{m=0}$, and type IIB superstring theory scattering amplitudes) to determine various perturbative terms in the large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling $λ$ expansion of the ${\cal N} = 4$ SYM correlator at separated points. In particular, we determine the leading large-$λ$ term in the ${\cal N} = 4$ SYM correlation function at order $1/N^8$. This is three orders beyond the planar limit.

The $O(N)$ Model in $4<d<6$: Instantons and Complex CFTs

We revisit the scalar $O(N)$ model in the dimension range $4<d<6$ and study the effects caused by its metastability. As shown in previous work, this model formally possesses a fixed point where, perturbatively in the $1/N$ expansion, the operator scaling dimensions are real and above the unitarity bound. Here, we further show that these scaling dimensions do acquire small imaginary parts due to the instanton effects. In $d$ dimensions and for large $N$, we find that they are of order $e^{-N f(d)}$, where, remarkably, the function $f(d)$ equals the sphere free energy of a conformal scalar in $d-2$ dimensions. The non-perturbatively small imaginary parts also appear in other observables, such as the sphere free energy and two and three-point function coefficients, and we present some of their calculations. Therefore, at sufficiently large $N$, the $O(N)$ models in $4<d<6$ may be thought of as complex CFTs. When $N$ is large enough for the imaginary parts to be numerically negligible, the five-dimensional $O(N)$ models may be studied using the techniques of numerical bootstrap.

$\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills Correlators at Strong Coupling from String Theory and Localization

We compute $1/λ$ corrections to the four-point functions of half-BPS operators in $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling $λ=g_\text{YM}^2 N$ using two methods. Firstly, we relate integrals of these correlators to derivatives of the mass deformed $S^4$ free energy, which was computed at leading order in large $N$ and to all orders in $1/λ$ using supersymmetric localization. Secondly, we use AdS/CFT to relate these $1/λ$ corrections to higher derivative corrections to supergravity for scattering amplitudes of Kaluza-Klein scalars in IIB string theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$, which in the flat space limit are known from worldsheet calculations. These two methods match at the order corresponding to the tree level $R^4$ interaction in string theory, which provides a precise check of AdS/CFT beyond supergravity, and allow us to derive the holographic correlators to tree level $D^4R^4$ order. Combined with constraints from arXiv:1809.10670, our results can be used to derive CFT data to one-loop $D^4R^4$ order. Finally, we use AdS/CFT to fix these correlators in the limit where $N$ is taken to be large while $g_{\rm YM}$ is kept fixed. In this limit, we present a conjecture for the small mass limit of the $S^4$ partition function that includes all instanton corrections and is written in terms of the same Eisenstein series that appear in the study of string theory scattering amplitudes.

AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ from Weak to Strong String Coupling

We consider the four-point function of operators in the stress tensor multiplet of the $U(N)_k\times U(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory, in the limit where $N$ is taken to infinity while $N/k^{5}$ is held fixed. In this limit, ABJM theory is holographically dual to type IIA string theory on $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$ at finite string coupling $g_s \sim (N/k^5)^{1/4}$. While at leading order in $1/N$, the stress tensor multiplet four-point function can be computed from type IIA supergravity, in this work we focus on the first subleading correction, which comes from tree level Witten diagrams with an $R^4$ interaction vertex. Using superconformal Ward identities, bulk locality, and the mass deformed sphere free energy previously computed to all orders in $1/N$ from supersymmetric localization, we determine this $R^4$ correction as a function of $N/k^5$. Taking its flat space limit, we recover the known $R^4$ contribution to the type IIA S-matrix and reproduce the fact that it only receives perturbative contributions in $g_s$ from genus zero and genus one string worldsheets. This is the first check of AdS/CFT at finite $g_s$ for local operators. Our result for the four-point correlator interpolates between the large $N$, large 't Hooft coupling limit and the large $N$ finite $k$ limit. From the bulk perspective, this is an interpolation between type IIA string theory on $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$ at small string coupling and M-theory on $AdS_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$.

An exact quantization of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

We propose an exact quantization of two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity by formulating the JT gravity theory as a 2D gauge theory placed in the presence of a loop defect. The gauge group is a certain central extension of $PSL(2, \mathbb{R})$ by $\mathbb{R}$. We find that the exact partition function of our theory when placed on a Euclidean disk matches precisely the finite temperature partition function of the Schwarzian theory. We show that observables on both sides are also precisely matched: correlation functions of boundary-anchored Wilson lines in the bulk are given by those of bi-local operators in the Schwarzian theory. In the gravitational context, the Wilson lines are shown to be equivalent to the world-lines of massive particles in the metric formulation of JT gravity.

The M-theory Archipelago

We combine supersymmetric localization results and the numerical conformal bootstrap technique to study the 3d maximally supersymmetric (${\cal N} = 8$) CFT on $N$ coincident M2-branes (the $U(N)_k \times U(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory at Chern-Simons level $k=1$). In particular, we perform a mixed correlator bootstrap study of the superconformal primaries of the stress tensor multiplet and of the next possible lowest-dimension half-BPS multiplet that is allowed by 3d ${\cal N} = 8$ superconformal symmetry. Of all known 3d ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFTs, the $k=1$ ABJM theory is the only one that contains both types of multiplets in its operator spectrum. By imposing the values of the short OPE coefficients that can be computed exactly using supersymmetric localization, we are able to derive precise islands in the space of semi-short OPE coefficients for an infinite number of such coefficients. We find that these islands decrease in size with increasing $N$. More generally, we also analyze 3d ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFT that contain both aforementioned multiplets in their operator spectra without inputing any additional information that is specific to ABJM theory. For such theories, we compute upper and lower bounds on the semi-short OPE coefficients as well as upper bounds on the scaling dimension of the lowest unprotected scalar operator. These latter bounds are more constraining than the analogous bounds previously derived from a single correlator bootstrap of the stress tensor multiplet. This leads us to conjecture that the $U(N)_2 \times U(N+1)_{-2}$ ABJ theory, and not the $k=1$ ABJM theory, saturates the single correlator bounds.

Anomalous dimensions of scalar operators in $QED_3$

The infrared dynamics of $2+1$ dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with a large number $N$ of fermion flavors is governed by an interacting CFT that can be studied in the $1/N$ expansion. We use the $1/N$ expansion to calculate the scaling dimensions of all the lowest three scalar operators that transform under the $SU(N)$ flavor symmetry as a Young diagram with two columns of not necessarily equal heights and that have vanishing topological charge. In the case of $SU(N)$ singlets, we study the mixing of $(\bar ψ_i ψ^i)(\bar ψ_j ψ^j)$ and $F_{μν} F^{μν}$, which are the lowest dimension parity-even singlets. Our results suggest that these operators are irrelevant for all $N>1$.

Bootstrapping 3D Fermions

We study the conformal bootstrap for a 4-point function of fermions $\langleψψψψ\rangle$ in 3D. We first introduce an embedding formalism for 3D spinors and compute the conformal blocks appearing in fermion 4-point functions. Using these results, we find general bounds on the dimensions of operators appearing in the $ψ\times ψ$ OPE, and also on the central charge $C_T$. We observe features in our bounds that coincide with scaling dimensions in the Gross-Neveu models at large $N$. We also speculate that other features could coincide with a fermionic CFT containing no relevant scalar operators.

Fermion-Scalar Conformal Blocks

We compute the conformal blocks associated with scalar-scalar-fermion-fermion 4-point functions in 3D CFTs. Together with the known scalar conformal blocks, our result completes the task of determining the so-called `seed blocks' in three dimensions. Conformal blocks associated with 4-point functions of operators with arbitrary spins can now be determined from these seed blocks by using known differential operators.

Holography for $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ on $S^4$

We construct the five-dimensional supergravity dual of the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ mass deformation of the $\mathcal{N} =4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^4$ and use it to calculate the universal contribution to the corresponding $S^4$ free energy at large 't Hooft coupling in the planar limit. The holographic RG flow solutions are smooth and preserve four supercharges. As a novel feature compared to the holographic duals of $\mathcal{N} = 1^*$ on $\mathbb{R}^4$, in our backgrounds the five-dimensional dilaton has a non-trivial profile, and the gaugino condensate is fixed in terms of the mass-deformation parameters. Important aspects of the analysis involve characterizing the ambiguities in the partition function of non-conformal $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theories on $S^4$ as well as the action of S-duality on the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theory.

Monopole operators from the $4-ε$ expansion

Three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with $N$ charged fermions contains monopole operators that have been studied perturbatively at large $N$. Here, we initiate the study of these monopole operators in the $4-ε$ expansion by generalizing them to codimension-3 defect operators in $d = 4-ε$ spacetime dimensions. Assuming the infrared dynamics is described by an interacting CFT, we define the "conformal weight" of these operators in terms of the free energy density on $S^2 \times \mathbb{H}^{2-ε}$ in the presence of magnetic flux through the $S^2$, and calculate this quantity to next-to-leading order in $ε$. Extrapolating the conformal weight to $ε= 1$ gives an estimate of the scaling dimension of the monopole operators in $d=3$ that does not rely on the $1/N$ expansion. We also perform the computation of the conformal weight in the large $N$ expansion for any $d$ and find agreement between the large $N$ and the small $ε$ expansions in their overlapping regime of validity.

Scaling dimensions of monopole operators in the $\mathbb{CP}^{N_b - 1}$ theory in $2+1$ dimensions

We study monopole operators at the conformal critical point of the $\mathbb{CP}^{N_b - 1}$ theory in $2+1$ spacetime dimensions. Using the state-operator correspondence and a saddle point approximation, we compute the scaling dimensions of these operators to next-to-leading order in $1/N_b$. We find remarkable agreement between our results and numerical studies of quantum antiferromagnets on two-dimensional lattices with SU($N_b$) global symmetry, using the mapping of the monopole operators to valence bond solid order parameters of the lattice antiferromagnet.

Towards Bootstrapping QED$_3$

We initiate the conformal bootstrap study of Quantum Electrodynamics in $2+1$ space-time dimensions (QED$_{3}$) with $N$ flavors of charged fermions by focusing on the 4-point function of four monopole operators with the lowest unit of topological charge. We obtain upper bounds on the scaling dimension of the doubly-charged monopole operator, with and without assuming other gaps in the operator spectrum. Intriguingly, we find a (gap-dependent) kink in these bounds that comes reasonably close to the large $N$ extrapolation of the scaling dimensions of the singly-charged and doubly-charged monopole operators down to $N=4$ and $N=6$.

Accidental Symmetries and the Conformal Bootstrap

We study an ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric generalization of the three-dimensional critical $O(N)$ vector model that is described by $N+1$ chiral superfields with superpotential $W = g_1 X \sum_i Z_i^2 + g_2 X^3$. By combining the tools of the conformal bootstrap with results obtained through supersymmetric localization, we argue that this model exhibits a symmetry enhancement at the infrared superconformal fixed point due to $g_2$ flowing to zero. This example is special in that the existence of an infrared fixed point with $g_1,g_2\neq 0$, which does not exhibit symmetry enhancement, does not generally lead to any obvious unitarity violations or other inconsistencies. We do show, however, that the $F$-theorem excludes the models with $g_1,g_2\neq 0$ for $N>5$. The conformal bootstrap provides a stronger constraint and excludes such models for $N>2$. We provide evidence that the $g_2=0$ models, which have the enhanced $O(N)\times U(1)$ symmetry, come close to saturating the bootstrap bounds. We extend our analysis to fractional dimensions where we can motivate the nonexistence of the $g_1,g_2\neq 0$ models by studying them perturbatively in the $4-ε$ expansion.

Bootstrapping $O(N)$ Vector Models in $4<d<6$

We use the conformal bootstrap to study conformal field theories with $O(N)$ global symmetry in $d=5$ and $d=5.95$ spacetime dimensions that have a scalar operator $ϕ_i$ transforming as an $O(N)$ vector. The crossing symmetry of the four-point function of this $O(N)$ vector operator, along with unitarity assumptions, determine constraints on the scaling dimensions of conformal primary operators in the $ϕ_i \times ϕ_j$ OPE. Imposing a lower bound on the second smallest scaling dimension of such an $O(N)$-singlet conformal primary, and varying the scaling dimension of the lowest one, we obtain an allowed region that exhibits a kink located very close to the interacting $O(N)$-symmetric CFT conjectured to exist recently by Fei, Giombi, and Klebanov. Under reasonable assumptions on the dimension of the second lowest $O(N)$ singlet in the $ϕ_i \times ϕ_j$ OPE, we observe that this kink disappears in $d =5$ for small enough $N$, suggesting that in this case an interacting $O(N)$ CFT may cease to exist for $N$ below a certain critical value.

Bootstrapping $O(N)$ Vector Models with Four Supercharges in $3 \leq d \leq4$

We analyze the conformal bootstrap constraints in theories with four supercharges and a global $O(N) \times U(1)$ flavor symmetry in $3 \leq d \leq 4$ dimensions. In particular, we consider the 4-point function of $O(N)$-fundamental chiral operators $Z_i$ that have no chiral primary in the $O(N)$-singlet sector of their OPE. We find features in our numerical bounds that nearly coincide with the theory of $N+1$ chiral super-fields with superpotential $W = X \sum_{i=1}^N Z_i^2$, as well as general bounds on SCFTs where $\sum_{i=1}^N Z_i^2$ vanishes in the chiral ring.

Three-sphere free energy for classical gauge groups

In this note, we calculate the $S^3$ free energy $F$ of 3-d ${\cal N}\geq 4$ supersymmetric gauge theories with $U(N)$, $O(N)$, and $USp(2N)$ gauge groups and matter hypermultiplets in the fundamental and two-index tensor representations. Supersymmetric localization reduces the computation of $F$ to a matrix model that we solve in the large $N$ limit using two different methods. The first method is a saddle point approximation first introduced in arXiv:1011.5487, which we extend to next-to-leading order in $1/N$. The second method generalizes the Fermi gas approach of arXiv:1110.4066 to theories with symplectic and orthogonal gauge groups, and yields an expression for $F$ valid to all orders in $1/N$. In developing the second method, we use a non-trivial generalization of the Cauchy determinant formula.

Anomalous dimensions of monopole operators in three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics

The space of local operators in three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics contains monopole operators that create $n$ units of gauge flux emanating from the insertion point. This paper uses the state-operator correspondence to calculate the anomalous dimensions of these monopole operators perturbatively to next-to-leading order in the $1/N_f$ expansion, thus improving on the existing leading order results in the literature. Here, $N_f$ is the number of two-component complex fermion flavors. The scaling dimension of the $n=1$ monopole operator is $0.265 N_f - 0.0383 + O(1/N_f)$ at the infrared conformal fixed point.

Exact Correlators of BPS Operators from the 3d Superconformal Bootstrap

We use the superconformal bootstrap to derive exact relations between OPE coefficients in three-dimensional superconformal field theories with ${\cal N} \geq 4$ supersymmetry. These relations follow from a consistent truncation of the crossing symmetry equations that is associated with the cohomology of a certain supercharge. In ${\cal N} = 4$ SCFTs, the non-trivial cohomology classes are in one-to-one correspondence with certain half-BPS operators, provided that these operators are restricted to lie on a line. The relations we find are powerful enough to allow us to determine an infinite number of OPE coefficients in the interacting SCFT ($U(2)_2 \times U(1)_{-2}$ ABJ theory) that constitutes the IR limit of $O(3)$ ${\cal N} = 8$ super-Yang-Mills theory. More generally, in ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFTs with a unique stress tensor, we are led to conjecture that many superconformal multiplets allowed by group theory must actually be absent from the spectrum, and we test this conjecture in known ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFTs using the superconformal index. For generic ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFTs, we also improve on numerical bootstrap bounds on OPE coefficients of short and semi-short multiplets and discuss their relation to the exact relations between OPE coefficients we derived. In particular, we show that the kink previously observed in these bounds arises from the disappearance of a certain quarter-BPS multiplet, and that the location of the kink is likely tied to the existence of the $U(2)_2 \times U(1)_{-2}$ ABJ theory, which can be argued to not possess this multiplet.

Exact results for five-dimensional superconformal field theories with gravity duals

We apply the technique of supersymmetric localization to exactly compute the $S^5$ partition function of several large $N$ superconformal field theories in five dimensions that have $AdS_6$ duals in massive type IIA supergravity. The localization computations are performed in the non-renormalizable effective field theories obtained through relevant deformations of the UV superconformal field theories. We compare the $S^5$ free energy to a holographic computation of entanglement entropy in the $AdS_6$ duals and find perfect agreement. In particular, we reproduce the $N^{5/2}$ scaling of the $S^5$ free energy that was expected from supergravity.

The ${\cal N} = 8$ Superconformal Bootstrap in Three Dimensions

We analyze the constraints imposed by unitarity and crossing symmetry on the four-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet of ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories in three dimensions. We first derive the superconformal blocks by analyzing the superconformal Ward identity. Our results imply that the OPE of the primary operator of the stress-tensor multiplet with itself must have parity symmetry. We then analyze the relations between the crossing equations, and we find that these equations are mostly redundant. We implement the independent crossing constraints numerically and find bounds on OPE coefficients and operator dimensions as a function of the stress-tensor central charge. To make contact with known ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories, we compute this central charge in a few particular cases using supersymmetric localization. For limiting values of the central charge, our numerical bounds are nearly saturated by the large $N$ limit of ABJM theory and also by the free $U(1)\times U(1)$ ABJM theory.

The Holography of F-maximization

We find new supersymmetric backgrounds of ${\cal N} = 8$ gauged supergravity in four Euclidean dimensions that are dual to deformations of ABJM theory on $S^3$. The deformations encode the most general choice of $U(1)_R$ symmetry used to define the theory on $S^3$. We work within an ${\cal N} = 2$ truncation of the ${\cal N} = 8$ supergravity theory obtained via a group theory argument. We find perfect agreement between the $S^3$ free energy computed from our supergravity backgrounds and the previous field theory computations of the same quantity based on supersymmetric localization and matrix model techniques.

AdS Description of Induced Higher-Spin Gauge Theory

We study deformations of three-dimensional large N CFTs by double-trace operators constructed from spin s single-trace operators of dimension Δ. These theories possess UV fixed points, and we calculate the change of the 3-sphere free energy δF= F_{UV}- F_{IR}. To describe the UV fixed point using the dual AdS_4 space we modify the boundary conditions on the spin s field in the bulk; this approach produces δF in agreement with the field theory calculations. If the spin s operator is a conserved current, then the fixed point is described by an induced parity invariant conformal spin s gauge theory. The low spin examples are QED_3 (s=1) and the 3-d induced conformal gravity (s=2). When the original CFT is that of N conformal complex scalar or fermion fields, the U(N) singlet sector of the induced 3-d gauge theory is dual to Vasiliev's theory in AdS_4 with alternate boundary conditions on the spin s massless gauge field. We test this correspondence by calculating the leading term in δF for large N. We show that the coefficient of (1/2)\log N in δF is equal to the number of spin s-1 gauge parameters that act trivially on the spin s gauge field. We discuss generalizations of these results to 3-d gauge theories including Chern-Simons terms and to theories where s is half-integer. We also argue that the Weyl anomaly a-coefficients of conformal spin s theories in even dimensions d, such as that of the Weyl-squared gravity in d=4, can be efficiently calculated using massless spin s fields in AdS_{d+1} with alternate boundary conditions. Using this method we derive a simple formula for the Weyl anomaly a-coefficients of the d=4 Fradkin-Tseytlin conformal higher-spin gauge fields. Similarly, using alternate boundary conditions in AdS_3 we reproduce the well-known central charge c=-26 of the bc ghosts in 2-d gravity, as well as its higher-spin generalizations.

Holography for ${\cal N}=2^*$ on $S^4$

We find the gravity dual of $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ super-Yang-Mills theory on $S^4$ and use holography to calculate the universal contribution to the corresponding $S^4$ free energy at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling. Monopole Taxonomy in Three-Dimensional Conformal Field Theories

We study monopole operators at the infrared fixed points of Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories with N_f fermion flavors in three dimensions. At large N_f, independent monopole operators can be defined via the state-operator correspondence only for stable monopole backgrounds. In Abelian theories, every monopole background is stable. In the non-Abelian case, we find that many (but not all) backgrounds are stable in each topological class. We calculate the infrared scaling dimensions of the corresponding operators through next-to-leading order in 1/N_f. In the case of U(N_c) QCD with N_f fundamental fermions (and in particular in the QED case, N_c =1), we find that the monopole operators transform as non-trivial irreducible representations of the SU(N_f) flavor symmetry group.

In 2+1-dimensional conformal field theories with a global U(1) symmetry, monopoles can be introduced through a background gauge field that couples to the U(1) conserved current. We use the state-operator correspondence to calculate scaling dimensions of such monopoles. We obtain the next-to-leading term in the 1/N_b expansion of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in the theory of N_b complex bosons.

Entanglement Entropy of 3-d Conformal Gauge Theories with Many Flavors

Three-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) of deconfined gauge fields coupled to gapless flavors of fermionic and bosonic matter describe quantum critical points of condensed matter systems in two spatial dimensions. An important characteristic of these CFTs is the finite part of the entanglement entropy across a circle. The negative of this quantity is equal to the finite part of the free energy of the Euclidean CFT on the three-sphere, and it has been proposed to satisfy the so called F-theorem, which states that it decreases under RG flow and is stationary at RG fixed points. We calculate the three-sphere free energy of non-supersymmetric gauge theory with a large number N_F of bosonic and/or fermionic flavors to the first subleading order in 1/N_F. We also calculate the exact free energies of the analogous chiral and non-chiral {\cal N} = 2 supersymmetric theories using localization, and find agreement with the 1/N_F expansion. We analyze some RG flows of supersymmetric theories, providing further evidence for the F-theorem.

Is Renormalized Entanglement Entropy Stationary at RG Fixed Points?

The renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) across a circle of radius R has been proposed as a c-function in Poincaré invariant (2+1)-dimensional field theory. A proof has been presented of its monotonic behavior as a function of R, based on the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy. However, this proof does not directly establish stationarity of REE at conformal fixed points of the renormalization group. In this note we study the REE for the free massive scalar field theory near the UV fixed point described by a massless scalar. Our numerical calculation indicates that the REE is not stationary at the UV fixed point.

On Shape Dependence and RG Flow of Entanglement Entropy

We use a mix of field theoretic and holographic techniques to elucidate various properties of quantum entanglement entropy. In (3+1)-dimensional conformal field theory we study the divergent terms in the entropy when the entangling surface has a conical or a wedge singularity. In (2+1)-dimensional field theory with a mass gap we calculate, for an arbitrary smooth entanglement contour, the expansion of the entropy in inverse odd powers of the mass. We show that the shape-dependent coefficients that arise are even powers of the extrinsic curvature and its derivatives. A useful dual construction of a (2+1)-dimensional theory, which allows us to exhibit these properties, is provided by the CGLP background. This smooth warped throat solution of 11-dimensional supergravity describes renormalization group flow from a conformal field theory in the UV to a gapped one in the IR. For this flow we calculate the recently introduced renormalized entanglement entropy and confirm that it is a monotonic function.

Renyi Entropies for Free Field Theories

Renyi entropies S_q are useful measures of quantum entanglement; they can be calculated from traces of the reduced density matrix raised to power q, with q>=0. For (d+1)-dimensional conformal field theories, the Renyi entropies across S^{d-1} may be extracted from the thermal partition functions of these theories on either (d+1)-dimensional de Sitter space or R x H^d, where H^d is the d-dimensional hyperbolic space. These thermal partition functions can in turn be expressed as path integrals on branched coverings of the (d+1)-dimensional sphere and S^1 x H^d, respectively. We calculate the Renyi entropies of free massless scalars and fermions in d=2, and show how using zeta-function regularization one finds agreement between the calculations on the branched coverings of S^3 and on S^1 x H^2. Analogous calculations for massive free fields provide monotonic interpolating functions between the Renyi entropies at the Gaussian and the trivial fixed points. Finally, we discuss similar Renyi entropy calculations in d>2.

F-Theorem without Supersymmetry

The conjectured F-theorem for three-dimensional field theories states that the finite part of the free energy on S^3 decreases along RG trajectories and is stationary at the fixed points. In previous work various successful tests of this proposal were carried out for theories with {\cal N}=2 supersymmetry. In this paper we perform more general tests that do not rely on supersymmetry. We study perturbatively the RG flows produced by weakly relevant operators and show that the free energy decreases monotonically. We also consider large N field theories perturbed by relevant double trace operators, free massive field theories, and some Chern-Simons gauge theories. In all cases the free energy in the IR is smaller than in the UV, consistent with the F-theorem. We discuss other odd-dimensional Euclidean theories on S^d and provide evidence that (-1)^{(d-1)/2} \log |Z| decreases along RG flow; in the particular case d=1 this is the well-known g-theorem.

From Necklace Quivers to the F-theorem, Operator Counting, and T(U(N))

The matrix model of Kapustin, Willett, and Yaakov is a powerful tool for exploring the properties of strongly interacting superconformal Chern-Simons theories in 2+1 dimensions. In this paper, we use this matrix model to study necklace quiver gauge theories with {\cal N}=3 supersymmetry and U(N)^d gauge groups in the limit of large N. In its simplest application, the matrix model computes the free energy of the gauge theory on S^3. The conjectured F-theorem states that this quantity should decrease under renormalization group flow. We show that for a simple class of such flows, the F-theorem holds for our necklace theories. We also provide a relationship between matrix model eigenvalue distributions and numbers of chiral operators that we conjecture holds more generally. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, there is therefore a natural dual geometric interpretation of the matrix model saddle point in terms of volumes of 7-d tri-Sasaki Einstein spaces and some of their 5-d submanifolds. As a final bonus, our analysis gives us the partition function of the T(U(N)) theory on S^3.

M-Branes and Metastable States

We study a supersymmetry breaking deformation of the M-theory background found in arXiv:hep-th/0012011. The supersymmetric solution is a warped product of R^{2,1} and the 8-dimensional Stenzel space, which is a higher dimensional generalization of the deformed conifold. At the bottom of the warped throat there is a 4-sphere threaded by \tilde{M} units of 4-form flux. The dual (2+1)-dimensional theory has a discrete spectrum of bound states. We add p anti-M2 branes at a point on the 4-sphere, and show that they blow up into an M5-brane wrapping a 3-sphere at a fixed azimuthal angle on the 4-sphere. This supersymmetry breaking state turns out to be metastable for p / \tilde{M} < 0.054. We find a smooth O(3)-symmetric Euclidean bounce solution in the M5-brane world volume theory that describes the decay of the false vacuum. Calculation of the Euclidean action shows that the metastable state is extremely long-lived. We also describe the corresponding metastable states and their decay in the type IIA background obtained by reduction along one of the spatial directions of R^{2,1}.

Multi-Matrix Models and Tri-Sasaki Einstein Spaces

Localization methods reduce the path integrals in {\cal N} >= 2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons gauge theories on S^3 to multi-matrix integrals. A recent evaluation of such a two-matrix integral for the {\cal N}=6 superconformal U(N) x U(N) ABJM theory produced detailed agreement with the AdS/CFT correspondence, explaining, in particular the N^{3/2} scaling of the free energy. We study a class of p-matrix integrals describing {\cal N}=3 superconformal U(N)^p Chern-Simons gauge theories. We present a simple method that allows us to evaluate the eigenvalue densities and the free energies in the large N limit keeping the Chern-Simons levels k_i fixed. The dual M-theory backgrounds are AdS_4 x Y, where Y are seven-dimensional tri-Sasaki Einstein spaces specified by the k_i. The gravitational free energy scales inversely with the square root of the volume of Y. We find a general formula for the p-matrix free energies that agrees with the available results for volumes of the tri-Sasaki Einstein spaces Y, thus providing a thorough test of the corresponding AdS_4/CFT_3 dualities. This formula is consistent with the Seiberg duality conjectured for Chern-Simons gauge theories.

Operator Counting and Eigenvalue Distributions for 3D Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We give further support for our conjecture relating eigenvalue distributions of the Kapustin-Willett-Yaakov matrix model in the large N limit to numbers of operators in the chiral ring of the corresponding supersymmetric three-dimensional gauge theory. We show that the relation holds for non-critical R-charges and for examples with {\mathcal N}=2 instead of {\mathcal N}=3 supersymmetry where the bifundamental matter fields are nonchiral. We prove that, for non-critical R-charges, the conjecture is equivalent to a relation between the free energy of the gauge theory on a three sphere and the volume of a Sasaki manifold that is part of the moduli space of the gauge theory. We also investigate the consequences of our conjecture for chiral theories where the matrix model is not well understood.

Towards the F-Theorem: N=2 Field Theories on the Three-Sphere

For 3-dimensional field theories with {\cal N}=2 supersymmetry the Euclidean path integrals on the three-sphere can be calculated using the method of localization; they reduce to certain matrix integrals that depend on the R-charges of the matter fields. We solve a number of such large N matrix models and calculate the free energy F as a function of the trial R-charges consistent with the marginality of the superpotential. In all our {\cal N}=2 superconformal examples, the local maximization of F yields answers that scale as N^{3/2} and agree with the dual M-theory backgrounds AdS_4 x Y, where Y are 7-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein spaces. We also find in toric examples that local F-maximization is equivalent to the minimization of the volume of Y over the space of Sasakian metrics, a procedure also referred to as Z-minimization. Moreover, we find that the functions F and Z are related for any trial R-charges. In the models we study F is positive and decreases along RG flows. We therefore propose the "F-theorem" that we hope applies to all 3-d field theories: the finite part of the free energy on the three-sphere decreases along RG trajectories and is stationary at RG fixed points. We also show that in an infinite class of Chern-Simons-matter gauge theories where the Chern-Simons levels do not sum to zero, the free energy grows as N^{5/3} at large N. This non-trivial scaling matches that of the free energy of the gravity duals in type IIA string theory with Romans mass.

Emergent Quantum Near-Criticality from Baryonic Black Branes

We find new black 3-brane solutions describing the "conifold gauge theory" at nonzero temperature and baryonic chemical potential. Of particular interest is the low-temperature limit where we find a new kind of weakly curved near-horizon geometry; it is a warped product AdS_2 x R^3 x T^{1,1} with warp factors that are powers of the logarithm of the AdS radius. Thus, our solution encodes a new type of emergent quantum near-criticality. We carry out some stability checks for our solutions. We also set up a consistent ansatz for baryonic black 2-branes of M-theory that are asymptotic to AdS_4 x Q^{1,1,1}.

Green's Functions and Non-Singlet Glueballs on Deformed Conifolds

We study the Laplacian on Stenzel spaces (generalized deformed conifolds), which are tangent bundles of spheres endowed with Ricci flat metrics. The (2d-2)-dimensional Stenzel space has SO(d) symmetry and can be embedded in C^d through the equation \sum_{i = 1}^d {z_i^2} = ε^2. We discuss the Green's function with a source at a point on the S^{d-1} zero section of TS^{d-1}. Its calculation is complicated by mixing between different harmonics with the same SO(d) quantum numbers due to the explicit breaking by the ε-deformation of the U(1) symmetry that rotates z_i by a phase. A similar mixing affects the spectrum of normal modes of warped deformed conifolds that appear in gauge/gravity duality. We solve the mixing problem numerically to determine certain bound state spectra in various representations of SO(d) for the d=4 and d=5 examples.

Membranes with Topological Charge and AdS4/CFT3 Correspondence

If the second Betti number b_2 of a Sasaki-Einstein manifold Y^7 does not vanish, then M-theory on AdS_4 x Y^7 possesses "topological" U(1)^{b_2} gauge symmetry. The corresponding Abelian gauge fields come from three-form fluctuations with one index in AdS_4 and the other two in Y^7. We find black membrane solutions carrying one of these U(1) charges. In the zero temperature limit, our solutions interpolate between AdS_4 x Y^7 in the UV and AdS_2 x R^2 x squashed Y^7 in the IR. In fact, the AdS_2 x R^2 x squashed Y^7 background is by itself a solution of the supergravity equations of motion. These solutions do not appear to preserve any supersymmetry. We search for their possible instabilities and do not find any. We also discuss the meaning of our charged membrane backgrounds in a dual quiver Chern-Simons gauge theory with a global U(1) charge density. Finally, we present a simple analytic solution which has the same IR but different UV behavior. We reduce this solution to type IIA string theory, and perform T-duality to type IIB. The type IIB metric turns out to be a product of the squashed Y^7 and the extremal BTZ black hole. We discuss an interpretation of this type IIB background in terms of the (1+1)-dimensional CFT on D3-branes partially wrapped over the squashed Y^7.

Energy loss in a strongly coupled thermal medium and the gauge-string duality

We review methods developed in the gauge-string duality to treat energy loss by energetic probes of a strongly coupled thermal medium. After introducing the black hole description of the thermal medium, we discuss the trailing string behind a heavy quark and the drag force that it implies. We then explain how to solve the linearized Einstein equations in the presence of the trailing string and extract from the solutions the energy density and the Poynting vector of the dual gauge theory. We summarize some efforts to compare these calculations to heavy ion phenomenology.

Quantum critical superconductors in string theory and M-theory

We construct zero-temperature solutions of supergravity theories in five and four dimensions which interpolate between two copies of anti-de Sitter space, one of which preserves an abelian gauge symmetry while the other breaks it. These domain wall solutions can be lifted to solutions of type IIB string theory and eleven-dimensional supergravity. They describe quantum critical behavior and emergent relativistic conformal symmetry in a superfluid or superconducting state of a strongly coupled dual gauge theory. We include computations of frequency-dependent conductivities which exhibit power law scaling in the infrared, with exponents determined by irrelevant perturbations to the symmetry-breaking anti-de Sitter background.

The Second Sound of SU(2)

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate the transport coefficients of a strongly interacting system with a non-abelian SU(2) global symmetry near a second order phase transition. From the behavior of the poles in the Green's functions near the phase transition, we determine analytically the speed of second sound, the conductivity, and diffusion constants. We discuss similarities and differences between this and other systems with vector order parameters such as p-wave superconductors and liquid helium-3.

The Squashed, Stretched, and Warped Gets Perturbed

We use direct Kaluza-Klein reduction to calculate the spectrum of spin-2 modes around a warped product of AdS_4 and a certain squashed and stretched 7-sphere. The modes turn out to be polynomials in the four complex variables parameterizing the sphere, and their complex conjugates. The background, which possesses U(1)_R x SU(3) symmetry, has been conjectured to be dual to a U(N) x U(N) N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons theory with a sextic superpotential. We find that the U(1)_R x SU(3) quantum numbers of spin-2 modes are in agreement with those determined in arXiv:0809.3773 through a group theoretic method, and with the spectrum of spin-2 gauge invariant operators in the Chern-Simons gauge theory. The mass-squared in AdS_4 is found to be quadratic in these quantum numbers and the Kaluza-Klein excitation number. Most of the spin-2 operators belong to long multiplets, and we determine their dimensions via the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Expanding plasmas and quasinormal modes of anti-de Sitter black holes

We compute the gravitational quasinormal modes of the global AdS_5-Schwarzschild solution. We show how to use the holographic dual of these modes to describe a thermal plasma of finite extent expanding in a slightly anisotropic fashion. We compare these flows with the behavior of quark-gluon plasmas produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions by estimating the elliptic flow coefficient and the thermalization time.

Low-lying gravitational modes in the scalar sector of the global AdS_4 black hole

We compute the quasinormal frequencies corresponding to the scalar sector of gravitational perturbations in the four-dimensional AdS-Schwarzschild black hole by using the master field formalism of hep-th/0305147. We argue that the non-deformation of the boundary metric favors a Robin boundary condition on the master field over the usual Dirichlet boundary condition mostly used in the literature. Using this Robin boundary condition we find a family of low-lying modes, whose frequencies match closely with predictions from linearized hydrodynamics on the boundary. In addition to the low-lying modes, we also see the usual sequence of modes with frequencies almost following an arithmetic progression.
