A GOA-Based Fault-Tolerant Trajectory Tracking Control for an Underwater Vehicle of Multi-Thruster System without Actuator Saturation

This paper proposes an intelligent fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy to tackle the trajectory tracking problem of an underwater vehicle (UV) under thruster damage (power loss) cases and meanwhile resolve the actuator saturation brought by the vehicle's physical constraints. In the proposed control strategy, the trajectory tracking component is formed by a refined backstepping algorithm that controls the velocity variation and a sliding mode control deducts the torque/force outputs; the fault-tolerant component is established based on a Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA), which provides fast convergence speed as well as satisfactory accuracy of deducting optimized reallocation of the thruster forces to compensate for the power loss in different fault cases. Simulations with or without environmental perturbations under different fault cases and comparisons to other traditional FTCs are presented, thus verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed GOA-based fault-tolerant trajectory tracking design.

A disorder-sensitive emergent vortex phase identified in high-Tc superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe

The magneto-transport properties are systematically measured under c-direction fields up to 33 T for a series of single-crystal films of intercalated iron-selenide superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe. The film samples with varying degree of disorder are grown hydrothermally. We observe a magnetic-field-enhanced shoulder-like feature in the mixed state of the high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe films with weak disorder, while the feature fades away in the films with enhanced disorder. The irreversibility field is significantly suppressed to lower temperatures with the appearance of the shoulder feature. Based on the experiment and model analysis, we establish a new vortex phase diagram for the weakly disordered high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe, which features an emergent dissipative vortex phase intermediate between the common vortex glass and liquid phases. The reason for the emergence of this intermediate vortex state is further discussed based on related experiments and models.

Acquisition of Channel State Information for mmWave Massive MIMO: Traditional and Machine Learning-based Approaches

The accuracy of channel state information (CSI) acquisition directly affects the performance of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications. In this article, we provide an overview on CSI acquisition, including beam training and channel estimation for mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. The beam training can avoid the estimation of a high-dimension channel matrix while the channel estimation can flexibly exploit advanced signal processing techniques. In addition to introducing the traditional and machine learning-based approaches in this article, we also compare different approaches in terms of spectral efficiency, computational complexity, and overhead.

Epitaxial stabilization of an orthorhombic Mg-Ti-O superconductor

The family of titanium oxide superconductors exhibits many intriguing phenomena comparable to cuprates and iron pnictides/chalcogenides, and thus provides an ideal platform to contrastively study the unconventional pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductors. Here, we successfully deposit superconducting Mg-Ti-O films on MgAl$_2$O$_4$ substrates with three principal orientations by ablating a MgTi$_2$O$_4$ target. Particularly, it is striking to observed that a single-crystalline film of an unintended structure has been grown on the (011)-oriented substrate, with the highest zero resistance transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}0}$) of 5.0 K among them. The film has a highly reduced Mg/Ti ratio and an orthorhombic Ti$_9$O$_{10}$-like structure (denoted as Mg: Ti$_9$O$_{10}$), demonstrated by further characterizations of chemical composition and structure. Such a structure is unstable in bulk but favorable to be epitaxially stabilized on the (011)-surface of MgAl$_2$O$_4$ due to a relatively small strain at the formed interface. An isotropic upper critical field ($B_{\mathrm{c}2}$) up to 13.7 T that breaks the Pauli limit is observed in the Mg: Ti$_9$O$_{10}$ film, analogous to other superconducting titanium oxides. The similarity points to a common origin for the superconductivity in the family, which will provide valuable opinions for the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in transition metal compounds.

Failure behaviors and processing maps with failure domains for hot compression of a powder metallurgy Ni-based superalloy

Processing maps are key to guiding the thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) of superalloys. However, traditional processing maps are incapable of delimiting failure, which is an essential factor to be concerned about during the TMP of superalloys. Employing isothermal hot compression experiments and finite element analysis (FEA), the present study examined the failure behaviors of a powder metallurgy (P/M) Ni-based superalloy and constructed processing maps with failure domains based on the predicted failure threshold. The micromechanical Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) damage model was employed in the FEA to model the cavity-driven intergranular fracture of the superalloy. Deformation temperature and strain rate were considered in the range of 1050 ~ 1150 C and 0.001 ~ 1 s-1, respectively. The FEA results reveal that the maximum tensile stress locates at the outer budging surfaces of the samples, which causes failure initiation and subsequent propagation into longitudinal cracks, being consistent with the experiments. It is further demonstrated that the failure is strain-controlled and the critical failure strain remains nearly insensitive to the range of strain rates considered while increasing with the increase of temperature in a third-order polynomial. Finally, an optimized processing window for hot deformation of the superalloy is formulated to warrant good hot workability while avoiding flow instability and failure. The present study offers direct insights into the failure behaviors of P/M Ni-based superalloys and details a modeling strategy to delineate optimized parametric spaces for the TMP of superalloys.

Framework on Deep Learning Based Joint Hybrid Processing for mmWave Massive MIMO Systems

For millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, hybrid processing architecture is essential to significantly reduce the complexity and cost but is quite challenging to be jointly optimized over the transmitter and receiver. In this paper, deep learning (DL) is applied to design a novel joint hybrid processing framework (JHPF) that allows end-to-end optimization by using back propagation. The proposed framework includes three parts: hybrid processing designer, signal flow simulator, and signal demodulator, which outputs the hybrid processing matrices for the transceiver by using neural networks (NNs), simulates the signal transmission over the air, and maps the detected symbols to the original bits by using the NN, respectively. By minimizing the cross-entropy loss between the recovered and original bits, the proposed framework optimizes the analog and digital processing matrices at the transceiver jointly and implicitly instead of approximating pre-designed label matrices, and its trainability is proved theoretically. It can be also directly applied to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems by simply modifying the structure of the training data. Simulation results show the proposed DL-JHPF outperforms the existing hybrid processing schemes and is robust to the mismatched channel state information and channel scenarios with the significantly reduced runtime.

Optimal Passenger-Seeking Policies on E-hailing Platforms Using Markov Decision Process and Imitation Learning

Vacant taxi drivers' passenger seeking process in a road network generates additional vehicle miles traveled, adding congestion and pollution into the road network and the environment. This paper aims to employ a Markov Decision Process (MDP) to model idle e-hailing drivers' optimal sequential decisions in passenger-seeking. Transportation network companies (TNC) or e-hailing (e.g., Didi, Uber) drivers exhibit different behaviors from traditional taxi drivers because e-hailing drivers do not need to actually search for passengers. Instead, they reposition themselves so that the matching platform can match a passenger. Accordingly, we incorporate e-hailing drivers' new features into our MDP model. The reward function used in the MDP model is uncovered by leveraging an inverse reinforcement learning technique. We then use 44,160 Didi drivers' 3-day trajectories to train the model. To validate the effectiveness of the model, a Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to simulate the performance of drivers under the guidance of the optimal policy, which is then compared with the performance of drivers following one baseline heuristic, namely, the local hotspot strategy. The results show that our model is able to achieve a 17.5% improvement over the local hotspot strategy in terms of the rate of return. The proposed MDP model captures the supply-demand ratio considering the fact that the number of drivers in this study is sufficiently large and thus the number of unmatched orders is assumed to be negligible. To better incorporate the competition among multiple drivers into the model, we have also devised and calibrated a dynamic adjustment strategy of the order matching probability.

Planck scale, Dirac delta function and ultraviolet divergence

The Planck length is the minimum length which physical law do not fail. The Dirac delta function was created to deal with continuous range issue, and it is zero except for one point. Thus contradict the Planck length. Renormalization method is the usual way to deal with divergence difficulties. The authors proposed a new way to solve the problem of ultraviolet divergence and this method is self-consistent with the Planck length. For this purpose a redefine function $δ_P$ in position representation was introduced to handle with the canonical quantization. The function $δ_P$ tends to the Dirac delta function if the Planck length goes to zero. By logical deduction the authors obtains new commutation/anticommutation relations and new Feynman propagators which are convergent. This article will deduce the new Feynman propagators for the Klein-Gordon field, the Dirac field and the Maxwell field. Through the new Feynman propagators, we can eliminate ultraviolet divergence.

Spatially Correlated Massive MIMO Relay Systems with Low-Resolution ADCs

In this paper, we investigate the massive MIMO relay system, where the relay station (RS) forwards the signals from multiple remote users to the base station (BS). Large-scale antenna arrays in conjunction with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are equipped at the RS and the BS to guarantee the high spectral efficiency with low cost. Considering the ever-present spatial correlation at both the RS and the BS, we first study the canonical channel estimation process, from which a tractable equivalent form of the channel estimate is extracted for further analysis. Under these transmission impairments along with the ADC quantization imperfection, we derive the closed-form approximation of the achievable rate. Then the impacts of power scaling, spatial correlation level, and ADC resolution bits are revealed comprehensively to guide the practical system deployment and implementation. Numerical results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis in a straightforward way.

Dark Matter Results from First 98.7-day Data of PandaX-II Experiment

We report the WIMP dark matter search results using the first physics-run data of the PandaX-II 500 kg liquid xenon dual-phase time-projection chamber, operating at the China JinPing Underground Laboratory. No dark matter candidate is identified above background. In combination with the data set during the commissioning run, with a total exposure of 3.3$\times10^4$ kg-day,the most stringent limit to the spin-independent interaction between the ordinary and WIMP dark matter is set for a range of dark matter mass between 3.5 and 1000 GeV/c$^2$. The best upper limit on the scattering cross section is found $2.5\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ for the WIMP mass 40 GeV/c$^2$ at 90% confidence level.

Performance of a Free Space Optical Relay-Assisted Hybrid RF/FSO System in Generalized M-Distributed Channels

This paper investigates the average symbol error rate (ASER) performance of a dual-hop hybrid relaying system relying on both radio frequency (RF) and free space optical (FSO) links. Specifically, the RF link is used for supporting mobile communication, while the FSO link is adopted as the backhaul of the cellular infrastructure. Considering non-line-of-sight (NLoS) RF transmissions and a generalized atmospheric turbulence (AT) channel, the associated statistical features constituted of both the exact and the asymptotic moment generating functions (MGF) are derived in closed form. They are then used for calculating the ASER of M-ary phase shift keying (PSK), differentially encoded non-coherent PSK (DPSK) and non-coherent frequency-shift keying (FSK). A range of additional asymptotic expressions are also derived for all the modulation schemes under high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). It is observed from the asymptotic analysis that the ASERs of all the modulation schemes are dominated by the average SNR of the RF link in the hybrid relaying system using a fixed relay gain, while in the relaying system using a dynamic channel dependent relay gain, the ASERs of all the modulation schemes depend both on the average SNR and on the AT condition of the FSO path. We also find that the fixed-gain relaying strategy achieves twice the diversity order of the channel-dependent relaying strategy albeit at the cost of requiring a high power amplifier (PA) dynamic range at the relay node. Furthermore, by comparing the asymptotic ASERs, we calculate the SNR differences between the different modulation schemes in both the fixed-gain and the channel-dependent relaying system. Finally, simulation results are presented for confirming the accuracy of our expressions and observations.

Robust scatter correction method for cone-beam CT using an interlacing-slit plate

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been widely used in medical imaging and industrial nondestructive testing, but the presence of scattered radiation will cause significant reduction of image quality. In this article, a robust scatter correction method for CBCT using an interlacing-slit plate (ISP) is carried out for convenient practice. Firstly, a Gaussian filtering method is proposed to compensate the missing data of the inner scatter image, and simultaneously avoid too-large values of calculated inner scatter and smooth the inner scatter field. Secondly, an interlacing-slit scan without detector gain correction is carried out to enhance the practicality and convenience of the scatter correction method. Finally, a denoising step for scatter-corrected projection images is added in the process flow to control the noise amplification. The experimental results show that the improved method can not only make the scatter correction more robust and convenient, but also achieve a good quality of scatter-corrected slice images.

A Universal, Rapid Method for Clean Transfer of Nanostructures onto Various Substrates

Transfer and integration of nanostructures onto target substrates is the prerequisite for their fundamental studies and practical applications. Conventional transfer techniques that involve stamping, lift-off and/or striping suffer from the process-specific drawbacks, such as the requirement for chemical etchant or high-temperature annealing and the introduction of surface discontinuities and/or contaminations that can greatly hinder the properties and functions of the transferred materials. Herein, we report a universal and rapid transfer method implementable at mild conditions. Nanostructures with various dimensionalities (i.e. nanoparticles, nanowires and nanosheets) and surface properties (i.e. hydrophilic and hydrophobic) can be facilely transferred to diverse substrates including hydrophilic, hydrophobic and flexible surfaces with good fidelity. Importantly, our method ensures the rapid and clean transfer of two-dimensional (2D) materials, and allows for the facile fabrication of vertical heterostructures with various compositions used for electronic devices. We believe that our method can facilitate the development of nano-electronics by accelerating the clean transfer and integration of low-dimensional materials into multidimensional structures.

First dark matter search results from the PandaX-I experiment

We report on the first dark-matter (DM) search results from PandaX-I, a low threshold dual-phase xenon experiment operating at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. In the 37-kg liquid xenon target with 17.4 live-days of exposure, no DM particle candidate event was found. This result sets a stringent limit for low-mass DM particles and disfavors the interpretation of previously-reported positive experimental results. The minimum upper limit, $3.7\times10^{-44}$\,cm$^2$, for the spin-independent isoscalar DM-particle-nucleon scattering cross section is obtained at a DM-particle mass of 49\,GeV/c$^2$ at 90\% confidence level.

Localization of Wiener Functionals of Fractional Regularity and Applications

In this paper we localize some of Watanabe's results on fractional Wiener functionals, and use them to give a precise estimate of the difference between two Donsker's delta functionals even with fractional differentiability. Point spread function modeling and images restoration for cone-beam CT

X-ray cone-beam computed tomography (CT) has the notable features such as high efficiency and precision, and is widely used in the fields of medical imaging and industrial non-destructive testing, but the inherent imaging degradation reduces the quality of CT images. Aimed at the problems of projection images degradation and restoration in cone-beam CT, a point spread function (PSF) modeling method is proposed firstly. The general PSF model of cone-beam CT is established, and based on it, the PSF under arbitrary scanning conditions can be calculated directly for projection images restoration without the additional measurement, which greatly improved the application convenience of cone-beam CT. Secondly, a projection images restoration algorithm based on pre-filtering and pre-segmentation is proposed, which can make the edge contours in projection images and slice images clearer after restoration, and control the noise in the equivalent level to the original images. Finally, the experiments verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Cryptanalysis and improvement of two certificateless three-party authenticated key agreement protocols

Recently, two certificateless three-party authenticated key agreement protocols were proposed, and both protocols were claimed they can meet the desirable security properties including forward security, key compromise impersonation resistance and so on. Through cryptanalysis, we show that one neither meets forward security and key compromise impersonation resistance nor resists an attack by an adversary who knows all users' secret values, and the other cannot resist key compromise impersonation attack. Finally, we propose improved protocols to make up two original protocols' security weaknesses, respectively. Further security analysis shows that our improved protocols can remove such security weaknesses.

Interlayer breathing and shear modes in few-trilayer MoS2 and WSe2

Two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently attracted tremendous interest as potential valleytronic and nano-electronic materials, in addition to being well-known as excellent lubricants in the bulk. The interlayer van der Waals (vdW) coupling and low frequency phonon modes, and how they evolve with the number of layers, are important for both the mechanical and electrical properties of 2D TMDs. Here we uncover the ultra-low frequency interlayer breathing and shear modes in few-layer MoS2 and WSe2, prototypical layered TMDs, using both Raman spectroscopy and first principles calculations. Remarkably, the frequencies of these modes can be perfectly described using a simple linear chain model with only nearest-neighbour interactions. We show that the derived in-plane (shear) and out-of-plane (breathing) force constants from experiment remain the same from two-layer 2D crystals to the bulk materials, suggesting that the nanoscale interlayer frictional characteristics of these excellent lubricants should be independent of the number of layers.

Investigation of MoS2 and Graphene Nanosheets by Magnetic Force Microscopy

For the first time, the magnetic force microscopy (MFM) is used to characterize the mechanically-exfoliated single- and few-layer MoS2 and graphene nanosheets. By analysis of the phase and amplitude shifts, the magnetic response of MoS2 and graphene nanosheets exhibits the dependence on their layer number. However, the solution-processed single-layer MoS2 nanosheet shows the reverse magnetic signal to the mechanically-exfoliated one, and the graphene oxide nanosheet has not shown any detectable magnetic signal. Importantly, graphene and MoS2 flakes become nonmagnetic when they exceed a certain thickness.

Rapid and reliable thickness identification of two-dimensional nanosheets using optical microscopy

The physical and electronic properties of ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) layered nanomaterials are highly related to their thickness. Therefore, the rapid and accurate identification of single- and few- to multi-layer nanosheets is essential to their fundamental study and practical applications. Here, a universal optical method has been developed for simple, rapid and reliable identification of single- to quindecuple-layer (1L-15L) 2D nanosheets, including graphene, MoS2, WSe2 and TaS2, on Si substrates coated with 90 nm or 300 nm SiO2. The optical contrast differences between the substrates and 2D nanosheets with different layer numbers were collected and tabulated, serving as a standard reference, from which the layer number of a given nanosheet can be readily and reliably determined without using complex calculation nor expensive instrument. Our general optical identification method will facilitate the thickness-dependent study of various 2D nanomaterials, and expedite their research toward practical applications.

Single-Layer MoS2 Phototransistors

A new phototransistor based on the mechanically-exfoliated single-layer MoS2 nanosheet is fabricated and its light-induced electric properties are investigated in details. Photocurrent generated from the phototransistor is solely determined by the illuminated optical power at a constant drain or gate voltage. The switching behavior of photocurrent generation and annihilation can be completely finished within ca. 50 ms and it shows good stability. Especially, the single-layer MoS2 phototransistor exhibits a better photoresponsivity as compared with the graphene-based device. The unique characteristics of incident-light control, prompt photoswitching and good photoresponsivity from the MoS2 phototransistor pave an avenue to develop the single-layer semiconducting materials for multi-functional optoelectronic device applications in future.

Growth of Large-Area and Highly Crystalline MoS2 Thin Layers on Insulating Substrates

The two-dimensional layer of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has recently attracted much interest due to its direct-gap property and potential applications in optoelectronics and energy harvesting. However, the synthetic approach to obtain high quality and large-area MoS2 atomic thin layers is still rare. Here we report that the high temperature annealing of a thermally decomposed ammonium thiomolybdate layer in the presence of sulfur can produce large-area MoS2 thin layers with superior electrical performance on insulating substrates. Spectroscopic and microscopic results reveal that the synthesized MoS2 sheets are highly crystalline. The electron mobility of the bottom-gate transistor devices made of the synthesized MoS2 layer is comparable with those of the micromechanically exfoliated thin sheets from MoS2 crystals. This synthetic approach is simple, scalable and applicable to other transition metal dichalcogenides. Meanwhile, the obtained MoS2 films are transferable to arbitrary substrates, providing great opportunities to make layered composites by stacking various atomically thin layers.

Analysis and improvement of a strongly secure certificateless key exchange protocol without pairing

Recently, Yang and Tan proposed a certificateless key exchange protocol without pairing, and claimed their scheme satisfies forward secrecy, which means no adversary could derive an already-established session key unless the full user secret keys (including a private key and an ephemeral secret key) of both communication parties are compromised. However, in this paper, we point out their protocol is actually not secure as claimed by presenting an attack launched by an adversary who has learned the private key of one party and the ephemeral secret key of the other, but not the full user secret keys of both parties. Furthermore, to make up this flaw, we also provide an improved protocol in which the private key and the ephemeral secret key are closely intertwined with each other for generating the session key, thus above attack can be efficiently resisted.

Magnetic properties of undoped Cu2O fine powders with magnetic impurities and/or cation vacancies

Fine powders of micron- and submicron-sized particles of undoped Cu2O semiconductor, with three different sizes and morphologies have been synthesized by different chemical processes. These samples include nanospheres 200 nm in diameter, octahedra of size 1 micron, and polyhedra of size 800 nm. They exhibit a wide spectrum of magnetic properties. At low temperature, T = 5 K, the octahedron sample is diamagnetic. The nanosphere is paramagnetic. The other two polyhedron samples synthesized in different runs by the same process are found to show different magnetic properties. One of them exhibits weak ferromagnetism with T_C = 455 K and saturation magnetization, M_S = 0.19 emu/g at T = 5 K, while the other is paramagnetic. The total magnetic moment estimated from the detected impurity concentration of Fe, Co, and Ni, is too small to account for the observed magnetism by one to two orders of magnitude. Calculations by the density functional theory (DFT) reveal that cation vacancies in the Cu2O lattice are one of the possible causes of induced magnetic moments. The results further predict that the defect-induced magnetic moments favour a ferromagnetically coupled ground state if the local concentration of cation vacancies, n_C, exceeds 12.5%. This offers a possible scenario to explain the observed magnetic properties. The limitations of the investigations in the present work, in particular in the theoretical calculations, are discussed and possible areas for further study are suggested.
