When Rules Fall Short: Agent-Driven Discovery of Emerging Content Issues in Short Video Platforms

Trends on short-video platforms evolve at a rapid pace, with new content issues emerging every day that fall outside the coverage of existing annotation policies. However, traditional human-driven discovery of emerging issues is too slow, which leads to delayed updates of annotation policies and poses a major challenge for effective content governance. In this work, we propose an automatic issue discovery method based on multimodal LLM agents. Our approach automatically recalls short videos containing potential new issues and applies a two-stage clustering strategy to group them, with each cluster corresponding to a newly discovered issue. The agent then generates updated annotation policies from these clusters, thereby extending coverage to these emerging issues. Our agent has been deployed in the real system. Both offline and online experiments demonstrate that this agent-based method significantly improves the effectiveness of emerging-issue discovery (with an F1 score improvement of over 20%) and enhances the performance of subsequent issue governance (reducing the view count of problematic videos by approximately 15%). More importantly, compared to manual issue discovery, it greatly reduces time costs and substantially accelerates the iteration of annotation policies.

Convert widespread paraelectric perovskite to ferroelectrics

While nature provides a plethora of perovskite materials, only a few exhibits large ferroelectricity and possibly multiferroicity. The majority of perovskite materials have the non-polar CaTiO$_3$(CTO)structure, limiting the scope of their applications. Based on effective Hamiltonian model as well as first-principles calculations, we propose a general thin-film design method to stabilize the functional BiFeO$_3$(BFO)-type structure, which is a common metastable structure in widespread CaTiO$_3$-type perovskite oxides. It is found that the improper antiferroelectricity in CTO-type perovskite and ferroelectricity in BFO-type perovskite have distinct dependences on mechanical and electric boundary conditions, both of which involve oxygen octahedral rotation and tilt. The above difference can be used to stabilize the highly polar BFO-type structure in many CTO-type perovskite materials.

Schema-Guided Event Graph Completion

We tackle a new task, event graph completion, which aims to predict missing event nodes for event graphs. Existing link prediction or graph completion methods have difficulty dealing with event graphs because they are usually designed for a single large graph such as a social network or a knowledge graph, rather than multiple small dynamic event graphs. Moreover, they can only predict missing edges rather than missing nodes. In this work, we propose to utilize event schema, a template that describes the stereotypical structure of event graphs, to address the above issues. Our schema-guided event graph completion approach first maps an instance event graph to a subgraph of the schema graph by a heuristic subgraph matching algorithm. Then it predicts whether a candidate event node in the schema graph should be added to the instantiated schema subgraph by characterizing two types of local topology of the schema graph: neighbors of the candidate node and the subgraph, and paths that connect the candidate node and the subgraph. These two modules are later combined together for the final prediction. We also propose a self-supervised strategy to construct training samples, as well as an inference algorithm that is specifically designed to complete event graphs. Extensive experimental results on four datasets demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance, with 4.3% to 19.4% absolute F1 gains over the best baseline method on the four datasets.

Spatial Channel Covariance Estimation and Two-Timescale Beamforming for IRS-Assisted Millimeter Wave Systems

We consider the problem of spatial channel covariance matrix (CCM) estimation for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems. Spatial CCM is essential for two-timescale beamforming in IRS-assisted systems; however, estimating the spatial CCM is challenging due to the passive nature of reflecting elements and the large size of the CCM resulting from massive reflecting elements of the IRS. In this paper, we propose a CCM estimation method by exploiting the low-rankness as well as the positive semi-definite (PSD) 3-level Toeplitz structure of the CCM. Estimation of the CCM is formulated as a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem and an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is developed. Our analysis shows that the proposed method is theoretically guaranteed to attain a reliable CCM estimate with a sample complexity much smaller than the dimension of the CCM. Thus the proposed method can help achieve a significant training overhead reduction. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method and the performance of two-timescale beamforming scheme based on the estimated CCM.

Study of background from accidental coincidence signals in the PandaX-II experiment

The PandaX-II experiment employed a 580kg liquid xenon detector to search for the interactions between dark matter particles and the target xenon atoms. The accidental coincidences of isolated signals result in a dangerous background which mimic the signature of the dark matter. We performed a detailed study on the accidental coincidence background in PandaX-II, including the possible origin of the isolated signals, the background level and corresponding background suppression method. With a boosted-decision-tree algorithm, the accidental coincidence background is reduced by 70% in the dark matter signal region, thus the sensitivity of dark matter search at PandaX-II is improved.

Internal Calibration of the PandaX-II Detector with Radon Gaseous Sources

We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was negligible, especially in 2018. We also measured the background contribution from $^{214}$Pb for the first time in PandaX-II with the help from a $^{222}$Rn injection. Calibration strategy with $^{220}$Rn and $^{222}$Rn will be implemented in the upcoming PandaX-4T experiment and can be useful for other xenon-based detectors as well.

Results of Dark Matter Search using the Full PandaX-II Exposure

We report the dark matter search results obtained using the full 132 ton$\cdot$day exposure of the PandaX-II experiment, including all data from March 2016 to August 2018. No significant excess of events is identified above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions. The lowest 90% confidence level exclusion on the spin-independent cross section is $2.2\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ at a WIMP mass of 30 GeV/$c^2$.

The action of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the torus on the Kauffman bracket skein module of the 3-twist knot complement

We determine the action of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the torus on the Kauffman bracket skein module of the complement of the 3-twist knot. The point is to study the relationship between knot complements and their boundary tori, an idea that has proved very fruitful in knot theory. We place this idea in the context of Chern-Simons theory, where such actions arose in connection with the computation of the noncommutative version of the A-polynomial that was defined by Frohman, Gelca and Lofaro, but they can also be interpreted as quantum mechanical systems. Our goal is to exhibit a detailed example in a part of Chern-Simons theory where examples are scarce.

Hyperbolicity in 2D transition metal ditellurides induced by electronic bands nesting

Naturally occurring hyperbolic plasmonic media is rare, and was only recently observed in the 1T$'$ phase of WTe$_2$. We elucidate on the physical origin of this strong infrared hyperbolic response, and attribute it to band-nested anisotropic interband transitions. Such phenomenon does not occur in general anisotropic materials, at least not in their pristine state. However, band-nested anisotropic interband transitions can in principle be induced via proper electronic band nesting. We illustrate this principle and demonstrate a topological elliptic-to-hyperbolic transition in MoTe$_2$ via strain engineering, which is otherwise non-hyperbolic.

MAT: Motion-Aware Multi-Object Tracking

Modern multi-object tracking (MOT) systems usually model the trajectories by associating per-frame detections. However, when camera motion, fast motion, and occlusion challenges occur, it is difficult to ensure long-range tracking or even the tracklet purity, especially for small objects. Although re-identification is often employed, due to noisy partial-detections, similar appearance, and lack of temporal-spatial constraints, it is not only unreliable and time-consuming, but still cannot address the false negatives for occluded and blurred objects. In this paper, we propose an enhanced MOT paradigm, namely Motion-Aware Tracker (MAT), focusing more on various motion patterns of different objects. The rigid camera motion and nonrigid pedestrian motion are blended compatibly to form the integrated motion localization module. Meanwhile, we introduce the dynamic reconnection context module, which aims to balance the robustness of long-range motion-based reconnection, and includes the cyclic pseudo-observation updating strategy to smoothly fill in the tracking fragments caused by occlusion or blur. Additionally, the 3D integral image module is presented to efficiently cut useless track-detection association connections with temporal-spatial constraints. Extensive experiments on MOT16 and MOT17 challenging benchmarks demonstrate that our MAT approach can achieve the superior performance by a large margin with high efficiency, in contrast to other state-of-the-art trackers.

Outlier-robust Kalman filters with mixture correntropy

We consider the robust filtering problem for a nonlinear state-space model with outliers in measurements. To improve the robustness of the traditional Kalman filtering algorithm, we propose in this work two robust filters based on mixture correntropy, especially the double-Gaussian mixture correntropy and Laplace-Gaussian mixture correntropy. We have formulated the robust filtering problem by adopting the mixture correntropy induced cost to replace the quadratic one in the conventional Kalman filter for measurement fitting errors. In addition, a tradeoff weight coefficient is introduced to make sure the proposed approaches can provide reasonable state estimates in scenarios where measurement fitting errors are small. The formulated robust filtering problems are iteratively solved by utilizing the cubature Kalman filtering framework with a reweighted measurement covariance. Numerical results show that the proposed methods can achieve a performance improvement over existing robust solutions.

Refinements in Motion and Appearance for Online Multi-Object Tracking

Modern multi-object tracking (MOT) system usually involves separated modules, such as motion model for location and appearance model for data association. However, the compatible problems within both motion and appearance models are always ignored. In this paper, a general architecture named as MIF is presented by seamlessly blending the Motion integration, three-dimensional(3D) Integral image and adaptive appearance feature Fusion. Since the uncertain pedestrian and camera motions are usually handled separately, the integrated motion model is designed using our defined intension of camera motion. Specifically, a 3D integral image based spatial blocking method is presented to efficiently cut useless connections between trajectories and candidates with spatial constraints. Then the appearance model and visibility prediction are jointly built. Considering scale, pose and visibility, the appearance features are adaptively fused to overcome the feature misalignment problem. Our MIF based tracker (MIFT) achieves the state-of-the-art accuracy with 60.1 MOTA on both MOT16&17 challenges.

Unifying Graph Convolutional Neural Networks and Label Propagation

Label Propagation (LPA) and Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCN) are both message passing algorithms on graphs. Both solve the task of node classification but LPA propagates node label information across the edges of the graph, while GCN propagates and transforms node feature information. However, while conceptually similar, theoretical relation between LPA and GCN has not yet been investigated. Here we study the relationship between LPA and GCN in terms of two aspects: (1) feature/label smoothing where we analyze how the feature/label of one node is spread over its neighbors; And, (2) feature/label influence of how much the initial feature/label of one node influences the final feature/label of another node. Based on our theoretical analysis, we propose an end-to-end model that unifies GCN and LPA for node classification. In our unified model, edge weights are learnable, and the LPA serves as regularization to assist the GCN in learning proper edge weights that lead to improved classification performance. Our model can also be seen as learning attention weights based on node labels, which is more task-oriented than existing feature-based attention models. In a number of experiments on real-world graphs, our model shows superiority over state-of-the-art GCN-based methods in terms of node classification accuracy.

Searching for Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay of $^{136}$Xe with PandaX-II Liquid Xenon Detector

We report the Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) search results from PandaX-II dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber. The total live time used in this analysis is 403.1 days from June 2016 to August 2018. With NLDBD-optimized event selection criteria, we obtain a fiducial mass of 219 kg of natural xenon. The accumulated xenon exposure is 242 kg$\cdot$yr, or equivalently 22.2 kg$\cdot$yr of $^{136}$Xe exposure. At the region around $^{136}$Xe decay Q-value of 2458 keV, the energy resolution of PandaX-II is 4.2%. We find no evidence of NLDBD in PandaX-II and establish a lower limit for decay half-life of 2.4 $ \times 10^{23} $ yr at the 90% confidence level, which corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ββ} < (1.3 - 3.5)$ eV. This is the first NLDBD result reported from a dual-phase xenon experiment.

We report the WIMP dark matter search results using the first physics-run data of the PandaX-II 500 kg liquid xenon dual-phase time-projection chamber, operating at the China JinPing Underground Laboratory. No dark matter candidate is identified above background. In combination with the data set during the commissioning run, with a total exposure of 3.3$\times10^4$ kg-day,the most stringent limit to the spin-independent interaction between the ordinary and WIMP dark matter is set for a range of dark matter mass between 3.5 and 1000 GeV/c$^2$. The best upper limit on the scattering cross section is found $2.5\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ for the WIMP mass 40 GeV/c$^2$ at 90% confidence level.

Extended First-Principles Molecular Dynamics Method From Cold Materials to Hot Dense Plasmas

An extended first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) method based on Kohn-Sham scheme is proposed to elevate the temperature limit of the FPMD method in the calculation of dense plasmas. The extended method treats the wave functions of high energy electrons as plane waves analytically, and thus expands the application of the FPMD method to the region of hot dense plasmas without suffering from the formidable computational costs. In addition, the extended method inherits the high accuracy of the Kohn-Sham scheme and keeps the information of elec- tronic structures. This gives an edge to the extended method in the calculation of the lowering of ionization potential, X-ray absorption/emission spectra, opacity, and high-Z dense plasmas, which are of particular interest to astrophysics, inertial confinement fusion engineering, and laboratory astrophysics.

Material Screening with HPGe Counting Station for PandaX Experiment

A gamma counting station based on high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector was set up for the material screening of the PandaX dark matter experiments in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Low background gamma rate of 2.6 counts/min within the energy range of 20 to 2700 keV is achieved due to the well-designed passive shield. The sentivities of the HPGe detetector reach mBq/kg level for isotopes like K, U, Th, and even better for Co and Cs, resulted from the low-background rate and the high relative detection efficiency of 175%. The structure and performance of the counting station are described in this article. Detailed counting results for the radioactivity in materials used by the PandaX dark-matter experiment are presented. The upgrading plan of the counting station is also discussed.

Stabilization of highly polar BiFeO$_3$-like structure: a new interface design route for enhanced ferroelectricity in artificial perovskite superlattices

In ABO3 perovskites, oxygen octahedron rotations are common structural distortions that can promote large ferroelectricity in BiFeO3 with an R3c structure [1], but suppress ferroelectricity in CaTiO3 with a Pbnm symmetry [2]. For many CaTiO3-like perovskites, the BiFeO3 structure is a metastable phase. Here, we report the stabilization of the highly-polar BiFeO3-like phase of CaTiO3 in a BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattice grown on a SrTiO3 substrate. The stabilization is realized by a reconstruction of oxygen octahedron rotations at the interface from the pattern of nonpolar bulk CaTiO3 to a different pattern that is characteristic of a BiFeO3 phase. The reconstruction is interpreted through a combination of amplitude-contrast sub 0.1nm high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and first-principles theories of the structure, energetics, and polarization of the superlattice and its constituents. We further predict a number of new artificial ferroelectric materials demonstrating that nonpolar perovskites can be turned into ferroelectrics via this interface mechanism. Therefore, a large number of perovskites with the CaTiO3 structure type, which include many magnetic representatives, are now good candidates as novel highly-polar multiferroic materials [3].

Surface- and strain-tuning of the optical dielectric function in epitaxially grown CaMnO3

We report a strong thickness dependence of the complex frequency-dependent optical dielectric function in epitaxial CaMnO3(001) thin films on SrTiO3(001), LaAlO3(001), and SrLaAlO4(001) substrates. A doubling of the peak value of the imaginary part of the dielectric function and spectral shifts of 0.5 eV for a given magnitude of absorption are observed. On the basis of the experimental data and first-principles density functional theory calculations of the dielectric function, its evolution with thickness from 4 to 63 nm has several regimes. In the thinnest, strain-coherent films, the response is characterized by a significant contribution from the free surface that dominates strain effects. However, at intermediate and larger thicknesses approaching the bulk-like film, strain coherence and partial strain relaxation persist and in influence the dielectric function.

TOF spectroscopy measurement using waveform digitizer

The photoneutron source (PNS, phase 1), an electron linear accelerator (linac)-based pulsed neutron facility that uses the time-of-flight (TOF) technique, was constructed for the acquisition of nuclear data from the thorium molten salt reactor(TMSR) at the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP). The neutron detector signal, with the information on the pulse arrival time, pulse shape, and pulse height, was recorded by using a waveform digitizer (WFD). By using the pulse height and pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) analysis to identify neutrons and $γ$-rays, the neutron TOF spectrum was obtained by employing a simple electronic design, and a new WFD-based DAQ system was developed and tested in this commissioning experiment. The developed DAQ system is characterized by a very high efficiency with respect to millisecond neutron TOF spectroscopy

Low-mass dark matter search results from full exposure of PandaX-I experiment

We report the results of a weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter search using the full 80.1\;live-day exposure of the first stage of the PandaX experiment (PandaX-I) located in the China Jin-Ping Underground Laboratory. The PandaX-I detector has been optimized for detecting low-mass WIMPs, achieving a photon detection efficiency of 9.6\%. With a fiducial liquid xenon target mass of 54.0\,kg, no significant excess event were found above the expected background. A profile likelihood analysis confirms our earlier finding that the PandaX-I data disfavor all positive low-mass WIMP signals reported in the literature under standard assumptions. A stringent bound on the low mass WIMP is set at WIMP mass below 10\,GeV/c$^2$, demonstrating that liquid xenon detectors can be competitive for low-mass WIMP searches.

Scintillation and Ionization Responses of Liquid Xenon to Low Energy Electronic and Nuclear Recoils at Drift Fields from 236 V/cm to 3.93 kV/cm

We present new measurements of the scintillation and ionization yields in liquid xenon for low energy electronic (about 3--7 keV$_{ee}$) and nuclear recoils (about 8--20 keV$_{nr}$) at different drift fields from 236 V/cm to 3.93 kV/cm, using a three-dimensional sensitive liquid xenon time projection chamber with high energy and position resolutions. Our measurement of signal responses to nuclear recoils agrees with predictions from the NEST model. However, our measured ionization (scintillation) yields for electronic recoils are consistently higher (lower) than those from the NEST model by about 5 e$^-$/keV$_{ee}$ (ph/keV$_{ee}$) at all scanned drift fields. New recombination parameters based on the Thomas-Imel box model are derived from our data. Given the lack of precise measurement of scintillation and ionization yields for low energy electronic recoils in liquid xenon previously, our new measurement provides so far the best available data covering low energy region at different drift fields for liquid xenon detectors relevant to dark matter searches.

First dark matter search results from the PandaX-I experiment

We report on the first dark-matter (DM) search results from PandaX-I, a low threshold dual-phase xenon experiment operating at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. In the 37-kg liquid xenon target with 17.4 live-days of exposure, no DM particle candidate event was found. This result sets a stringent limit for low-mass DM particles and disfavors the interpretation of previously-reported positive experimental results. The minimum upper limit, $3.7\times10^{-44}$\,cm$^2$, for the spin-independent isoscalar DM-particle-nucleon scattering cross section is obtained at a DM-particle mass of 49\,GeV/c$^2$ at 90\% confidence level.

Structural and electronic origin of the magnetic structures in hexagonal LuFeO$_3$

Using combined theoretical and experimental approaches, we studied the structural and electronic origin of the magnetic structure in hexagonal LuFeO$_3$. Besides showing the strong exchange coupling that is consistent with the high magnetic ordering temperature, the previously observed spin reorientation transition is explained by the theoretically calculated magnetic phase diagram. The structural origin of this spin reorientation that is responsible for the appearance of spontaneous magnetization, is identified by theory and verified by x-ray diffraction and absorption experiments.

Finite-State Markov Modeling of Leaky Waveguide Channels in Communication-based Train Control (CBTC) Systems

Leaky waveguide has been adopted in communication based train control (CBTC) systems, as it can significantly enhance railway network efficiency, safety and capacity. Since CBTC systems have high requirements for the train ground communications, modeling the leaky waveguide channels is very important to design the wireless networks and evaluate the performance of CBTC systems. In the letter, we develop a finite-state Markov channel (FSMC) model for leaky waveguide channels in CBTC systems based on real field channel measurements obtained from a business operating subway line. The proposed FSMC channel model takes train locations into account to have a more accurate channel model. The overall leaky waveguide is divided into intervals, and an FSMC model is applied in each interval. The accuracy of the proposed FSMC model is illustrated by the simulation results generated from the model and the real field measurement results.

Finite-State Markov Modeling of Tunnel Channels in Communication-based Train Control (CBTC) Systems

Communication-based train control (CBTC) is gradually adopted in urban rail transit systems, as it can significantly enhance railway network efficiency, safety and capacity. Since CBTC systems are mostly deployed in underground tunnels and trains move in high speed, building a train-ground wireless communication system for CBTC is a challenging task. Modeling the tunnel channels is very important to design and evaluate the performance of CBTC systems. Most of existing works on channel modeling do not consider the unique characteristics in CBTC systems, such as high mobility speed, deterministic moving direction, and accurate train location information. In this paper, we develop a finite state Markov channel (FSMC) model for tunnel channels in CBTC systems. The proposed FSMC model is based on real field CBTC channel measurements obtained from a business operating subway line. Unlike most existing channel models, which are not related to specific locations, the proposed FSMC channel model takes train locations into account to have a more accurate channel model. The distance between the transmitter and the receiver is divided into intervals, and an FSMC model is applied in each interval. The accuracy of the proposed FSMC model is illustrated by the simulation results generated from the model and the real field measurement results.

Room temperature multiferroism in CaTcO$_3$ by interface engineering

The structural instabilities of ATcO$_3$(A= Ca, Sr, Ba) are investigated by first-principles calculations. In addiction to the large octahedral rotation instability, a weak ferroelectric tendency is identified in CaTcO$_3$. We show that the ferroelectricity in CaTcO$_3$ can be recovered by interface engineering based on CaTcO$_3$/BaTcO$_3$ superlattices, where the octahedral rotation is largely suppressed. The N{é}el temperature is found to be $\sim$ 816 K, indicating that CaTcO$_3$ can be engineered into a new room temperature multiferroic material.

Cyrstal field splitting and optical band gap of hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ films

Hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ films have been studied using x-ray absorption and optical spectroscopy. The crystal splittings of Fe$^{3+}$ are extracted as $E_{e'}-E_{e"}$=0.7 eV and $E_{a_1'}-E_{e'}$=0.9 eV and a 2.0 eV optical band gap is determined assuming a direct gap. First-principles calculations confirm the experiments that the relative energies of crystal field splitting states do follow $E_{a_1'}>E_{e'}>E_{e"}$ with slightly underestimated values and a band gap of 1.35 eV.

Interface induced giant magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic superlattices

The electric and magnetic properties of (BaTiO$_3$)$_n$/(CaMnO$_3$)$_n$ short-period superlattices are studied by the first-principles calculations. The local electric polarizations in the CaMnO$_3$ layers are significant, comparable to that in the BaTiO$_3$ layers. Remarkably, the electric polarization is almost doubled when the spin configuration changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic in the superlattices, indicating a giant magnetoelectric coupling. This enhancement of the magnetoelectric coupling is due to the suppression of the antiferrodistortive mode in the CaMnO$_3$ layers at the interfaces.

Global solutions for the generalized Boussinesq equation in low-order Sobolev spaces

We show that the Cauchy problem for the defocusing generalized Boussinesq equation $u_{tt}-u_{xx}+u_{xxxx}-(|u|^{2k}u)_{xx}=0$, $k\geq1$, on the real line is globally well-posed in $H^{s}(\R)$ for $s>1-({1}/{3k})$. We use the "$I$-method" to define a modification of the energy functional that is "almost conserved" in time. Our result extends the previous one obtained by Farah and Linares (2010 \textit{J.
