Asymptotic Long-Distance Expansion of Euclidean Correlators in Lattice Parton Applications

Bilinear Euclidean quark and gluon correlators with Wilson links have been used widely for applications of large-momentum effective field theories to computing non-perturbative collinear and soft parton physics. Due to color confinement, these correlators decay exponentially at large spatial distances, a behavior crucial for computing momentum-space Fourier transformations with controlled errors from lattice QCD data. Using heavy-quark effective theory reduction, dispersive analysis, Lorentz symmetry, and heavy-flavor spectra, we determine the leading and next-to-leading asymptotic behaviors and relate the expansion parameters to binding energies of heavy-flavor hadrons. We demonstrate the results through two-loop calculations in $ϕ^3$ theory and from the perspective of locality and analyticity. We also study the impact of the asymptotic analysis on realistic lattice QCD data and demonstrate reliable error estimates.

GPS-Synchronized Monitoring of Core-collapse Supernova Bursts with PandaX-4T via Coherent Elastic Neutrino Nuclear Scattering

The landmark detection of neutrinos from SN1987A marked the dawn of neutrino astrophysics. The neutrino burst provided essential insights into fundamental properties of neutrinos, and served as key probes of stellar evolution and supernova dynamics. The recent advancement in coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering enables the detection of core-collapse supernova burst neutrinos using tonne-scale liquid xenon detectors originally designed for dark matter direct detection. Leveraging this capability, we developed and deployed an online supernova monitoring system for the PandaX-4T experiment. This system features a GPS module with millisecond-level timing precision, a low false-alarm rate, and high sensitivity to galactic core-collapse supernova explosion events. The methodology is robust, directly scalable, and planned for implementation in the next-generation PandaX-20T experiment.

Total Gluon Helicity Contribution to the Proton Spin from Lattice QCD

We report a state-of-the-art lattice QCD calculation of the total gluon helicity contribution to the proton spin, $ΔG$. The calculation is done on ensembles with three different lattice spacings $a=\{0.08, 0.09, 0.11\}$ fm. By employing distillation and momentum smearing for proton external states, we extract the bare matrix elements of the topological current $K^μ$ using 5-HYP smeared Coulomb gauge fixing configurations. Furthermore, we apply a non-perturbative $\mathrm{RI/MOM}$ renormalization scheme augmented by the Cluster Decomposition Error Reduction (CDER) technique to determine the renormalization constants of $K^μ$. The results obtained from different components $K^{t,i}$ (with $i$ being the direction of proton momentum or polarization) are consistent with Lorentz covariance within uncertainties. After extrapolating to the continuum limit, $ΔG$ is found to be $ΔG = 0.231(17)^{\mathrm{sta.}}(44)^{\mathrm{sym.}}$ at the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scale $μ^2=10\ \mathrm{GeV}^2$, which constitutes approximately $46(9)\%$ of the proton spin.

Proton's gluon GPDs at large skewness and gravitational form factors from near threshold heavy quarkonium photo-production

We study the exclusive near-threshold photo-production of heavy quarkonium in the framework of the generalized parton distribution (GPD) factorization, taking the $J/ψ$ production as an example. Due to the threshold kinematics, the Compton-like amplitudes are related to gluon GPDs at large skewness $ξ$, distinct from the common kinematics in asymptotic high energy where the skewness is typically small. We discuss the nature of large-$ξ$ expansion of these amplitudes in terms of the moments of gluon GPDs in the large-$ξ$ limit. Based on that, we propose several ways to extract the first few moments of the gluon GPDs from these amplitudes, with the leading ones corresponding to the gluonic gravitational or energy-momentum tensor form factors (GFFs). We apply these methods to analyze the recent near-threshold $J/ψ$ production measurements by the $J/ψ$ 007 experiment and GlueX collaboration, and find that the $ξ$-scaling of the measured differential cross sections is consistent with the asymptotic behavior. However, the current data are not accurate enough yet for a complete determination of the gluonic GFFs, and therefore we consider some prospects for better extractions in the future.

A First Search for Solar $^8$B Neutrino in the PandaX-4T Experiment using Neutrino-Nucleus Coherent Scattering

A search for interactions from solar $^8$B neutrinos elastically scattering off xenon nuclei using PandaX-4T commissioning data is reported. The energy threshold of this search is further lowered compared with the previous search for dark matter, with various techniques utilized to suppress the background that emerges from data with the lowered threshold. A blind analysis is performed on the data with an effective exposure of 0.48 tonne$\cdot$year, and no significant excess of events is observed. Among results obtained using the neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering, our results give the best constraint on the solar $^8$B neutrino flux. We further provide a more stringent limit on the cross section between dark matter and nucleon in the mass range from 3 to 9 GeV/c$^2$.

$\rm ^{83}Rb$/$\rm ^{83m}Kr$ production and cross-section measurement with 3.4 MeV and 20 MeV proton beams

$\rm ^{83m}Kr$, with a short lifetime, is an ideal calibration source for liquid xenon or liquid argon detectors. The $\rm ^{83m}Kr$ isomer can be generated through the decay of $\rm ^{83} Rb$ isotope which is usually produced by proton beams bombarding natural krypton atoms. In this paper, we report a successful production of $\rm ^{83}Rb/^{83m}Kr$ with a proton beam energy of 3.4 MeV, and the first measurement of the production rate with such low energy proton beams. Another production attempt is performed using the newly available 20 MeV proton beam in China, and the measured production rate is consistent with previous measurements. The produced $\rm ^{83m}Kr$ source has been successfully injected into the PandaX-II liquid xenon detector, yielding enough statistics for detector calibration.

A Search for the Cosmic Ray Boosted Sub-GeV Dark Matter at the PandaX-II Experiment

We report a novel search for the cosmic ray boosted dark matter using the 100~tonne$\cdot$day full data set of the PandaX-II detector located at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. With the extra energy gained from the cosmic rays, sub-GeV dark matter particles can produce visible recoil signals in the detector. The diurnal modulations in rate and energy spectrum are utilized to further enhance the signal sensitivity. Our result excludes the dark matter-nucleon elastic scattering cross section between 10$^{-31}$cm$^{2}$ and 10$^{-28}$cm$^{2}$ for a dark matter masses from 0.1 MeV/$c^2$ to 0.1 GeV/$c^2$, with a large parameter space previously unexplored by experimental collaborations.

A search for two-component Majorana dark matter in a simplified model using the full exposure data of PandaX-II experiment

In the two-component Majorana dark matter model, one dark matter particle can scatter off the target nuclei, and turn into a slightly heavier component. In the framework of a simplified model with a vector boson mediator, both the tree-level and loop-level processes contribute to the signal in direct detection experiment. In this paper, we report the search results for such dark matter from PandaX-II experiment, using total data of the full 100.7 tonne$\cdot$day exposure. No significant excess is observed, so strong constraints on the combined parameter space of mediator mass and dark matter mass are derived. With the complementary search results from collider experiments, a large range of parameter space can be excluded.

Lattice QCD Calculations of Parton Physics

In this document, we summarize the status and challenges of calculating parton physics in lattice QCD for the US Particle Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. "Snowmass"). While PDF-moments calculations have been very successful and been continuously improved, new methods have been developed to calculate distributions directly in $x$-space. Many recent lattice studies have been focused on calculating isovector PDFs of the pion and nucleon, learning to control systematics associated with excited-state contamination, renormalization and continuum extrapolations, pion-mass and finite-volume effects, etc. Although in some cases, the lattice results are already competitive with experimental data, to reach the level of precision in a wide range of $x$ for unpolarized nucleon PDFs impactful for future collider physics remains a challenge, and may require exascale supercomputing power. The new theoretical methods open the door for calculating other partonic observables which will be the focus of the experimental program in nuclear physics, including generalized parton distributions and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. A fruitful interplay between experimental data and lattice-QCD calculations will usher in a new era for parton physics and hadron structure.

Low Radioactive Material Screening and Background Control for the PandaX-4T Experiment

PandaX-4T is a ton-scale dark matter direct detection experiment using a dual-phase TPC technique at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Various ultra-low background technologies have been developed and applied to material screening for PandaX-4T, including HPGe gamma spectroscopy, ICP-MS, NAA, radon emanation measurement system, krypton assay station, and alpha detection system. Low background materials were selected to assemble the detector. Surface treatment procedures were investigated to further suppress radioactive background. Combining measured results and Monte Carlo simulation, the total material background rates of PandaX-4T in the energy region of 1-25 keV$\rm{}_{ee}$ are estimated to be (9.9 $\pm$ 1.9) $\times \ 10^{-3}$ mDRU for electron recoil and (2.8 $\pm$ 0.6) $\times \ 10^{-4}$ mDRU for nuclear recoil. In addition, $^{nat}$Kr in the detector is estimated to be <8 ppt.

Measurement of high-pressure xenon gas absorption in acrylic

Acrylic is a popular structural material in experiments requiring low background because of its radio-purity, machinability, and mechanical strength. However, its porosity may cause significant gas absorption and influence the detector stability in the long term. The interaction between acrylic and other detector materials becomes one of the key concerns in the detector design. In this paper, we carry out an experiment to measure quantitatively the absorption process of high-pressure xenon gas into acrylic. A specific setup is designed for the measurement, and systematic measurements are done to obtain a result of the absorption amount: 0.98 g xenon into 332 g of acrylic.

Momentum-Current Gravitational Multipoles of Hadrons

We study multipole expansion of the momentum currents in hadrons, with three series $S^{(J)}$, $\tilde T^{(J)}$, and $T^{(J)}$, in connection with the gravitational fields generated nearby. The momentum currents are related to their energy-momentum form factors, which in principle can be probed through processes like deeply-virtual Compton scattering currently studied at JLab 12 GeV facility and future Electron Ion Collider. We define the leading momentum-current multipoles, tensor monopole $τ$ ($T0$) and scalar quadrupole $\hat σ^{ij}$ ($S2$) moments, relating the former to the so-called $D$-term in the literature. We calculate the momentum current distribution in hydrogen atom and its monopole moment in the basic unit of $τ_0 =\hbar^2/4M$, showing that the sign of $D$-term has little to do with mechanical stability. The momentum current distribution also strongly modifies the static gravitational field inside hadrons.

Neutron-induced nuclear recoil background in the PandaX-4T experiment

Neutron-induced nuclear recoil background is critical to the dark matter searches in the PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. This paper studies the feature of neutron background in liquid xenon and evaluates their contribution in the single scattering nuclear recoil events through three methods. The first method is fully Monte Carlo simulation based. The last two are data-driven methods that also use the multiple scattering signals and high energy signals in the data, respectively. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data with an exposure of 0.63 tonne-year, all these methods give a consistent result that there are $1.15\pm0.57$ neutron-induced background in dark matter signal region within an approximated nuclear recoil energy window between 5 and 100 keV.

Nonperturbative Determination of Collins-Soper Kernel from Quasi Transverse-Momentum Dependent Wave Functions

In the framework of large-momentum effective theory at one-loop matching accuracy, we perform a lattice calculation of the Collins-Soper kernel which governs the rapidity evolution of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) distributions. We first obtain the quasi TMD wave functions at three different meson momenta on a lattice with valence clover quarks on a dynamical HISQ sea and lattice spacing $a=0.12$~fm from MILC, and renormalize the pertinent linear divergences using Wilson loops. Through one-loop matching to the light-cone wave functions, we determine the Collins-Soper kernel with transverse separation up to 0.6~fm. We study the systematic uncertainties from operator mixing and scale dependence, as well as the impact from higher power corrections. Our results potentially allow for a determination of the soft function and other transverse-momentum dependent quantities at one-loop accuracy.

Renormalization of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution on the lattice

To calculate the transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) from lattice QCD, an important goal yet to be realized, it is crucial to establish a viable non-perturbative renormalization approach for linear divergences in the corresponding Euclidean quasi-TMDPDF correlators in large-momentum effective theory. We perform a first systematic study of the renormalization property of the quasi-TMDPDFs by calculating the relevant matrix elements in a pion state at 5 lattice spacings ranging from 0.03 fm to 0.12 fm. We demonstrate that the square root of the Wilson loop combined with the short distance hadron matrix element provides a successful method to remove all ultraviolet divergences of the quasi-TMD operator, and thus provide the necessary justification to perform a continuum limit calculation of TMDPDFs. In contrast, the popular RI/MOM renormalization scheme fails to eliminate all linear divergences.

Study of background from accidental coincidence signals in the PandaX-II experiment

The PandaX-II experiment employed a 580kg liquid xenon detector to search for the interactions between dark matter particles and the target xenon atoms. The accidental coincidences of isolated signals result in a dangerous background which mimic the signature of the dark matter. We performed a detailed study on the accidental coincidence background in PandaX-II, including the possible origin of the isolated signals, the background level and corresponding background suppression method. With a boosted-decision-tree algorithm, the accidental coincidence background is reduced by 70% in the dark matter signal region, thus the sensitivity of dark matter search at PandaX-II is improved.

Twist-three cross-sections in deeply virtual Compton scattering

We study the deeply virtual Compton scattering process with both twist-two and twist-three Compton form factors and present our cross-sections formulas with all polarization configurations. While the twist-three contributions are generally assumed to be negligible in the literature due to the kinematical suppression, we compare them with the twist-two ones at typical JLab 6 GeV and 12 GeV kinematics as well as EIC kinematics and show their kinematical suppression explicitly, justifying the leading-twist approximation made in the literature. In addition, we also estimate the twist-three Compton form factors using Wandzura-Wilczek relations and inputs of twist-two generalized parton distributions based on a reggeized spectator model. With those estimated Compton form factors, we analyze the kinematical behavior of twist-two and twist-three cross-sections in a wide range of kinematics, and discuss the optimal regions for separating the leading-twist effects from the higher-twist ones.

A Hybrid Renormalization Scheme for Quasi Light-Front Correlations in Large-Momentum Effective Theory

In large-momentum effective theory (LaMET), calculating parton physics starts from calculating coordinate-space-$z$ correlation functions $\tilde h(z, a,P^z)$ in a hadron of momentum $P^z$ in lattice QCD. Such correlation functions involve both linear and logarithmic divergences in lattice spacing $a$, and thus need to be properly renormalized. We introduce a hybrid renormalization procedure to match these lattice correlations to those in the continuum $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme, without introducing extra non-perturbative effects at large $z$. We analyze the effect of ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ ambiguity in the Wilson line self-energy subtraction involved in this hybrid scheme. To obtain the momentum-space distributions, we recommend to extrapolate the lattice data to the asymptotic $z$-region using the generic properties of the coordinate space correlations at moderate and large $P^z$, respectively.

Computing Light-Front Wave Functions Without Light-Front Quantization: A Large-Momentum Effective Theory Approach

Light-front wave functions play a fundamental role in the light-front quantization approach to QCD and hadron structure. However, a naive implementation of the light-front quantization suffers from various subtleties including the well-known zero-mode problem, the associated rapidity divergences which mixes ultra-violet divergences with infrared physics, as well as breaking of spatial rotational symmetry. We advocate that the light-front quantization should be viewed as an effective theory in which small $k^+$ modes have been effectively ``integrated out'', with an infinite number of renormalization constants. Instead of solving light-front quantized field theories directly, we make the large momentum expansion of the equal-time Euclidean correlation functions in instant quantization as an effective way to systematically calculate light-front correlations, including the light-front wave function amplitudes. This large-momentum effective theory accomplishes an effective light-front quantization through lattice QCD calculations. We demonstrate our approach using an example of a pseudo-scalar meson wave function.

Experimental Analysis of PandaX-4T Cryogenic Distillation System for Removing Krypton from Xenon

An efficient cryogenic distillation system was designed and constructed for PandaX-4T dark matter detector based on the McCabe-Thiele (M-T) method and the conservation of mass and energy. This distillation system is designed to reduce the concentration of krypton in commercial xenon from 5X$10^{-7}$ mol/mol to $10^{-14}$ mol/mol with 99% xenon collection efficiency at a maximum flow rate of 10 kg/h. The offline distillation operation has been completed and 5.75 tons of ultra-high purity xenon was produced, which is used as the detection medium in PandaX-4T detector. The krypton concentration of the product xenon is measured with an upper limit of 8.0 ppt. The stability and purification performance of the cryogenic distillation system are studied by analyzing the experimental data, which is important for theoretical research and distillation operation optimization.

Higher-Order Kinematical Effects in Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

We study the deeply virtual Compton scattering cross-section in twist-two generalized parton distribution (GPD) approximation, and show that different choices of light-cone vectors and gauges for the final photon polarization will lead to different higher-order kinematical corrections to the cross-section formula. The choice of light-cone vectors affects kinematic corrections at the twist-three level, accounting for the differences between the cross-section formulas in the literature. On the other hand, kinematical corrections from higher-twist GPDs should eliminate the light-cone dependence at twist three. Those light-cone dependencies are studied systematically at JLab 12 GeV and future EIC kinematics. They serve as the intrinsic systematic uncertainties in extracting the Compton form factors through the cross-section formula. More importantly, they are also necessary for understanding cross-section measurements with higher-twist precision and to reconstruct higher-order Compton form factors.

Internal Calibration of the PandaX-II Detector with Radon Gaseous Sources

We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was negligible, especially in 2018. We also measured the background contribution from $^{214}$Pb for the first time in PandaX-II with the help from a $^{222}$Rn injection. Calibration strategy with $^{220}$Rn and $^{222}$Rn will be implemented in the upcoming PandaX-4T experiment and can be useful for other xenon-based detectors as well.

Light yield and field dependence measurement in PandaX-II dual-phase xenon detector

The dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC) is one of the most sensitive detector technology for dark matter direct search, where the energy deposition of incoming particle can be converted into photons and electrons through xenon excitation and ionization. The detector response to signal energy deposition varies significantly with the electric field in liquid xenon. We study the detector's light yield and its dependence on the electric field in the PandaX-II dual-phase detector containing 580~kg liquid xenon in the sensitive volume. From our measurements, the light yield at electric fields from 0~V/cm to 317~V/cm is obtained for energy depositions up to 236~keV.

On Extraction of Twist-Two Compton Form Factors from DVCS Observables Through Harmonic Analysis

We investigate the exercise of locally extracting the real and imaginary parts of the four twist-2 Compton form factors (CFFs) $\{\mathcal{H},\mathcal{E},\widetilde{\mathcal{H}},\widetilde{\mathcal{E}}\}$ which arise in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process $e + p \rightarrow e + p + γ$. Neglecting dynamical higher-twist contributions, we find that there are a sufficient number of DVCS observables and degrees of freedom to extract all 8 leading quantities model-independently, exploiting the azimuthal dependence of the absolute cross sections across all possible beam and target polarizations at a common kinematical point in $\{Q,t,x_B,y\}$. As an example, for typical JLab lab-frame kinematics, we simplify the reduced DVCS observables to their dominant terms, providing a sufficient number of equations for local determination of the twist-2 CFFs. We demonstrate the feasibility using harmonic fitting to both cross sections and beam spin asymmetries with both real and pseudo-data.

Proton mass decomposition: naturalness and interpretations

I discuss the scope and naturalness of the proton mass decomposition (or sum rule) published in PRL74, 1071 (1995) and answer a few criticisms that appeared recently in the literature, focusing particularly on its interpretation and the quantum anomalous energy contribution. I comment on the so-called frame-independent or invariant-mass decomposition from the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. I stress the importance of measuring the quantum anomalous energy through experiments. Finally, I point out a large discrepancy in the scalar radius of the nucleon extracted from vector-meson productions and lattice QCD calculations.

Quantum Anomalous Energy Effects on the Nucleon Mass

Apart from the quark and gluon kinetic and potential energies, the nucleon mass includes a novel energy of pure quantum origin resulting from anomalous breaking of scale symmetry. We demonstrate the effects of this quantum anomalous energy (QAE) in QED, as well as in a toy 1+1 dimensional non-linear sigma model where it contributes non-perturbatively, in a way resembling the Higgs mechanism for the masses of matter particles in electro-weak theory. The QAE contribution to the nucleon mass can be explained using a similar mechanism, in terms of a dynamical response of the gluonic scalar field through Higgs-like couplings between the nucleon and scalar resonances. In addition, the QAE sets the scale for other energies in the nucleon through a relativistic virial theorem, and contributes a negative pressure to confine the colored quarks.

Proton spin after 30 years: what we know and what we don't?

More than three decades has passed since the European Muon Collaboration published the first surprising result on the spin structure of the proton. Much theoretical and experimental progress has been made in understanding the origins of the proton spin. In this review, we will discuss what we have learned so far, what are still missing, and what we shall expect to learn from the upcoming experiments including JLab 12 GeV and Electron-Ion Collider. In particular, we focus on first principles calculations and experimental measurements of the total gluon helicity $ΔG$, and quark and gluon orbital angular momenta.

TMD Soft Function from Large-Momentum Effective Theory

We study Euclidean formulations of the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) soft function, which is a cross section for soft gluon radiations involving color charges moving in two conjugate lightcone directions in quantum chromodynamics. We show it is related to a special form factor of a pair of color sources traveling with nearly-lightlike velocities, which can be matched to TMD physical observables in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan process in the framework of large momentum effective theory. It can also be extracted by combining a large-momentum form factor of light meson and its leading TMD wave function. These formulations are useful for initiating nonperturbative calculations of this useful quantity.

Transverse spin sum rule of the proton

The transversely-polarized state of a proton with arbitrary momentum is not an eigenstate of transverse angular momentum operator. The latter does not commute with the QCD Hamiltonian. However, the expectation value of the transverse angular momentum in the state is well-defined and grows proportionally to the energy of the particle. The transverse spin content of the proton is analyzed in terms of the QCD angular momentum structure. In particular, we reconfirm that the generalized parton distributions $H+E$ provide transverse orbital angular momentum densities of quarks and gluons in the infinite momentum frame.

Why is LaMET an effective field theory for partonic structure?

Partons are effective degrees of freedom describing the structure of hadrons involved in high-energy collisions. Familiar theories of partons are QCD light-front quantization and soft-collinear effective theory, both of which are intrinsically Minkowskian and appear unsuitable for classical Monte Carlo simulations. A ``new'' form of the parton theory has been formulated in term of the old-fashioned, Feynman's infinite momentum frame, in which the parton degrees of freedom are filtered through infinite-momentum external states. The partonic structure of hadrons is then related to the matrix elements of static (equal-time) correlators in the state $|P^z=\infty\rangle$. This representation lays the foundation of large-momentum effective theory (LaMET) which approximates parton physics through a systematic $M/P^z$ expansion of the lattice QCD matrix elements at a finite but large momentum $P^z$, and removes the residual logarithmic-$P^z$ dependence by the standard effective-field-theory matching and running.

Searching for Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay of $^{136}$Xe with PandaX-II Liquid Xenon Detector

We report the Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) search results from PandaX-II dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber. The total live time used in this analysis is 403.1 days from June 2016 to August 2018. With NLDBD-optimized event selection criteria, we obtain a fiducial mass of 219 kg of natural xenon. The accumulated xenon exposure is 242 kg$\cdot$yr, or equivalently 22.2 kg$\cdot$yr of $^{136}$Xe exposure. At the region around $^{136}$Xe decay Q-value of 2458 keV, the energy resolution of PandaX-II is 4.2%. We find no evidence of NLDBD in PandaX-II and establish a lower limit for decay half-life of 2.4 $ \times 10^{23} $ yr at the 90% confidence level, which corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ββ} < (1.3 - 3.5)$ eV. Improved quasi parton distribution through Wilson line renormalization

Recent developments showed that hadron light-cone parton distributions could be directly extracted from spacelike correlators, known as quasi parton distributions, in the large hadron momentum limit. Unlike the normal light-cone parton distribution, a quasi parton distribution contains ultraviolet (UV) power divergence associated with the Wilson line self energy. We show that to all orders in the coupling expansion, the power divergence can be removed by a "mass" counterterm in the auxiliary $z$-field formalism, in the same way as the renormalization of power divergence for an open Wilson line. After adding this counterterm, the quasi quark distribution is improved such that it contains at most logarithmic divergences. Based on a simple version of discretized gauge action, we present the one-loop matching kernel between the improved non-singlet quasi quark distribution with a lattice regulator and the corresponding quark distribution in dimensional regularization.

Material Screening with HPGe Counting Station for PandaX Experiment

We present the first lattice-QCD calculation of the isovector polarized parton distribution functions (both helicity and transversity) using the large-momentum effective field theory (LaMET) approach for direct Bjorken-$x$ dependence. We first review the detailed steps of the procedure in the unpolarized case, then generalize to the helicity and transversity cases. We also derive a new mass-correction formulation for all three cases. We then compare the effects of each finite-momentum correction using lattice data calculated at $M_π\approx 310$ MeV. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results for the poorly known antiquark structure and predict the sea-flavor asymmetry in the transversely polarized nucleon.

PandaX-III: Searching for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with High Pressure $^{136}$Xe Gas Time Projection Chambers

Searching for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) is now regarded as the topmost promising technique to explore the nature of neutrinos after the discovery of neutrino masses in oscillation experiments. PandaX-III (Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III) will search for the NLDBD of $^{136}$Xe at the China Jin Ping underground Laboratory (CJPL). In the first phase of the experiment, a high pressure gas Time Projection Chamber (TPC) will contain 200 kg, 90% $^{136}$Xe enriched gas operated at 10 bar. Fine pitch micro-pattern gas detector (Microbulk Micromegas) will be used at both ends of the TPC for the charge readout with a cathode in the middle. Charge signals can be used to reconstruct tracks of NLDBD events and provide good energy and spatial resolution. The detector will be immersed in a large water tank to ensure $\sim$5 m of water shielding in all directions. The second phase, a ton-scale experiment, will consist of five TPCs in the same water tank, with improved energy resolution and better control over backgrounds.

Flavor Structure of the Nucleon Sea from Lattice QCD

We present the first direct lattice calculation of the isovector sea-quark parton distributions using the formalism developed recently by one of the authors. We use $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ lattice gauge ensembles (generated by MILC Collaboration) and clover valence fermions with pion mass 310 MeV. We are able to obtain the qualitative features of the nucleon sea flavor structure even at this large pion mass: We observe violation of the Gottfried sum rule, indicating $\overline{d}(x) > \overline{u}(x)$; the helicity distribution obeys $Δ\overline{u}(x) > Δ\overline{d}(x)$, which is consistent with the STAR data at large and small leptonic pseudorapidity.

Justifying the Naive Partonic Sum Rule for Proton Spin

We provide a theoretical basis for understanding the spin structure of the proton in terms of the spin and orbital angular momenta of free quarks and gluons in Feynman's parton picture. We show that each term in the Jaffe-Manohar spin sum rule can be related to the matrix element of a gauge-invariant, but frame-dependent operator through a matching formula in large-momentum effective field theory. We present all the matching conditions for the spin content at one-loop order in perturbation theory, which provide a basis to calculate parton orbital angular momentum in lattice QCD at leading logarithmic accuracy.

Low-mass dark matter search results from full exposure of PandaX-I experiment

We report the results of a weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter search using the full 80.1\;live-day exposure of the first stage of the PandaX experiment (PandaX-I) located in the China Jin-Ping Underground Laboratory. The PandaX-I detector has been optimized for detecting low-mass WIMPs, achieving a photon detection efficiency of 9.6\%. With a fiducial liquid xenon target mass of 54.0\,kg, no significant excess event were found above the expected background. A profile likelihood analysis confirms our earlier finding that the PandaX-I data disfavor all positive low-mass WIMP signals reported in the literature under standard assumptions. A stringent bound on the low mass WIMP is set at WIMP mass below 10\,GeV/c$^2$, demonstrating that liquid xenon detectors can be competitive for low-mass WIMP searches.

Neutrino Physics with JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\barν$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest to understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the building blocks of our Universe.

On the renormalization of quasi parton distribution

Recent developments showed that light-cone parton distributions can be studied by investigating the large momentum limit of the hadronic matrix elements of spacelike correlators, which are known as quasi parton distributions. Like a light-cone parton distribution, a quasi parton distribution also contains ultraviolet divergences and therefore needs renormalization. The renormalization of non-local operators in general is not well understood. However, in the case of quasi quark distribution, the bilinear quark operator with a straight-line gauge link appears to be multiplicatively renormalizable by the quark wave function renormalization in the axial gauge. We first show that the renormalization of the self energy correction to the quasi quark distribution is equivalent to that of the heavy-light quark vector current in heavy quark effective theory at one-loop order. Assuming this equivalence at two-loop order, we then show that the multiplicative renormalizability of the quasi quark distribution is true at two-loop order.

One-Loop Matching for Generalized Parton Distributions

We present the one-loop matching condition for the unpolarized and polarized generalized quark distributions in the non-singlet case. The matching condition links the quasi distributions defined in terms of spacelike correlators at finite nucleon momentum to the light-cone distributions, and is useful for extracting the latter from the former in a lattice QCD calculation. Our results show that at one-loop and leading power accuracy the matching for the light-cone generalized quark distribution $H$ ($\tilde H$) is non-trivial, whereas no matching is required for $E$ ($\tilde E$). Therefore, $E$ ($\tilde E$) can be smoothly approached by its quasi counterpart in the large momentum limit. We also present the matching for the distribution amplitude of the pion.

Spin Decomposition of Electron in QED

We perform a systematic study on the spin decomposition of an electron in QED at one-loop order. It is found that the electron orbital angular momentum defined in Jaffe-Manohar and Ji spin sum rules agrees with each other, and the so-called potential angular momentum vanishes at this order. The calculations are performed in both dimensional regularization and Pauli-Villars regularization for the ultraviolet divergences, and they lead to consistent results. We further investigate the calculations in terms of light-front wave functions, and find a missing contribution from the instantaneous interaction in light-front quantization. This clarifies the confusing issues raised recently in the literature on the spin decomposition of an electron, and will help to consolidate the spin physics program for nucleons in QCD.

This result sets a stringent limit for low-mass DM particles and disfavors the interpretation of previously-reported positive experimental results. The minimum upper limit, $3.7\times10^{-44}$\,cm$^2$, for the spin-independent isoscalar DM-particle-nucleon scattering cross section is obtained at a DM-particle mass of 49\,GeV/c$^2$ at 90\% confidence level.

Parton Physics from Large-Momentum Effective Field Theory

Parton physics, when formulated as light-front correlations, are difficult to study non-perturbatively, despite the promise of light-front quantization. Recently an alternative approach to partons have been proposed by re-visiting original Feynman picture of a hadron moving at asymptotically large momentum. Here I formulate the approach in the language of an effective field theory for a large hadron momentum $P$ in lattice QCD, LaMET for short. I show that using this new effective theory, parton properties, including light-front parton wave functions, can be extracted from lattice observables in a systematic expansion of $1/P$, much like that the parton distributions can be extracted from the hard scattering data at momentum scales of a few GeV.

Soft Factor Subtraction and Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions on Lattice

We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions in the newly proposed quasi-parton distribution function framework in Euclidean space. A soft factor subtraction is found to be essential to make the TMDs calculable on lattice. We show that the quasi-TMDs with the associated soft factor subtraction can be applied in hard QCD scattering processes such as Drell-Yan lepton pair production in hadronic collisions. This allows future lattice calculations to provide information on the non-perturbative inputs and energy evolutions for the TMDs. Extension to the generalized parton distributions and quantum phase space Wigner distributions will lead to a complete nucleon tomography on lattice.

The second-phase development of the China JinPing underground Laboratory

During 2013-2015 an expansion of the China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL) will be undertaken along a main branch of a bypass tunnel in the JinPing tunnel complex. This second phase of CJPL will increase laboratory space to approximately 96,000 m^3, which can be compared to the existing CJPL-I volume of 4,000 m^3. One design configuration has eight additional hall spaces, each over 60 m long and approximately 12 m in width, with overburdens of about 2.4 km of rock, oriented parallel to and away from the main water transport and auto traffic tunnels. Concurrent with the excavation activities, planning is underway for dark matter and other rare-event detectors, as well as for geophysics/engineering and other coupled multi-disciplinary sensors. In the town meeting on 8 September, 2013 at Asilomar, CA, associated with the 13th International Conference on Topics in Astroparticle and Underground Physics (TAUP), presentations and panel discussions addressed plans for one-ton expansions of the current CJPL germanium detector array of the China Darkmatter EXperiment (CDEX) collaboration and of the duel-phase xenon detector of the Panda-X collaboration, as well as possible new detector initiatives for dark matter studies, low-energy solar neutrino detection, neutrinoless double beta searches, and geoneutrinos. JinPing was also discussed as a site for a low-energy nuclear astrophysics accelerator. Geophysics/engineering opportunities include acoustic and micro-seismic monitoring of rock bursts during and after excavation, coupled-process in situ measurements, local, regional, and global monitoring of seismically induced radon emission, and electromagnetic signals.

A Naturally Light Sterile neutrino in an Asymmetric Dark Matter Model

A recently proposed asymmetric mirror dark matter model where the mirror sector is connected with the visible one by a right handed neutrino portal, is shown to lead naturally to a 3+1 active-sterile neutrino spectrum, if the portal consists only of two right handed neutrinos. At the tree level the model has four massless neutrino states, three active and one sterile. The active neutrinos pick up tiny masses via the minimal radiative inverse seesaw mechanism at the one loop level. The loop effects also generate the large solar and atmospheric mixings, as well as the observed reactor mixing for certain range of parameters of the model. The dominant contribution to the sterile neutrino mass ($\sim$ eV) arises from the gravitationally induced dimension-5 operators. Generating active-sterile mixing requires a two Higgs doublet extension of SM and a small mixing between the ordinary and mirror Higgs fields, which occurs naturally in mirror models.

Ionization Yield from Nuclear Recoils in Liquid-Xenon Dark Matter Detection

The ionization yield in the two-phase liquid xenon dark-matter detector has been studied in keV nuclear-recoil energy region. The newly-obtained nuclear quenching as well as the recently-measured average energy required to produce an electron-ion pair are used to calculate the total electric charges produced. To estimate the fraction of the electron charges collected, the Thomas-Imel model is generalized to describing the field dependence for nuclear recoils in liquid xenon. With free parameters fitted to experiment measured 56.5 keV nuclear recoils, the energy dependence of ionization yield for nuclear recoils is predicted, which increases with the decreasing of the recoiling energy and reaches the maximum value at 2~3 keV. This prediction agrees well with existing data and may help to lower the energy detection threshold for nuclear recoils to ~1 keV.

Gluon Spin, Canonical Momentum, and Gauge Symmetry

It is well known that in gauge theories, the spin (and orbital angular momentum) of gauge particles is not gauge invariant, although the helicity is; neither are the canonical momentum and canonical angular momentum of charged particles. However, the simple appeal of these concepts has motivated repeated attempts to resurrect them as physical descriptions of gauge systems. In particular, measurability of the gluon-spin-contribution to the proton helicity in polarized proton scattering has generated many theoretical efforts in generalizing it and others as gauge-invariant quantities. In this work, we analyze the constraints of gauge symmetry, the significance of gluon spin in the light-cone gauge, and what is possible and natural in QCD parton physics, emphasizing experimental observability and physical interpretation in the structure of bound states. We also comment on the measurability of the orbital angular momentum of the Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes in optics.

Light dark matter and $Z'$ dark force at colliders

Light Dark Matter, $<10$ GeV, with sizable direct detection rate is an interesting and less explored scenario. Collider searches can be very powerful, such as through the channel in which a pair of dark matter particle are produced in association with a jet. It is a generic possibility that the mediator of the interaction between DM and the nucleus will also be accessible at the Tevatron and the LHC. Therefore, collider search of the mediator can provide a more comprehensive probe of the dark matter and its interactions. In this article, to demonstrate the complementarity of these two approaches, we focus on the possibility of the mediator being a new $U(1)'$ gauge boson, which is probably the simplest model which allows a large direct detection cross section for a light dark matter candidate. We combine searches in the monojet+MET channel and dijet resonance search for the mediator. We find that for the mass of $Z'$ between 250 GeV and 4 TeV, resonance searches at the colliders provide stronger constraints on this model than the monojet+MET searches.

Probing Parton Orbital Angular Momentum in Longitudinally Polarized Nucleon

While the total orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a definite quark flavor in a longitudinally-polarized nucleon can be obtained through a sum rule involving twist-two generalized parton distribution (GPDs), its distribution as a function of parton momentum in light-front coordinates is more complicated to define and measure because it involves intrinsically twist-three effects. In this paper, we consider two different parton OAM distributions. The first is manifestly gauge invariant, and its moments are local operators and calculable in lattice QCD. We show that it can potentially be measured through twist-three GPDs. The second is the much-debated canonical OAM distribution natural in free-field theory and light-cone gauge. We show the latter in light-cone gauge can also be related to twist-three GPDs as well as quantum phase-space Wigner distributions, both being measurable in high-energy experiments.

The Cryogenic System for the Panda-X Dark Matter Search Experiment

Panda-X is a liquid xenon dual-phase detector for the Dark Matter Search. The first modestly-sized module will soon be installed in the China JinPing Deep Underground Laboratory in Sichuan province, P.R. China. The cryogenics system is designed to handle much larger detectors, even the final version in the ton scale. Special attention has been paid to the reliability, serviceability, and adaptability to the requirements of a growing experiment. The system is cooled by a single Iwatani PC150 Pulse Tube Refrigerator. After subtracting all thermal losses, the remaining cooling power is still 82W. The fill speed was 9 SLPM, but could be boosted by LN2 assisted cooling to 40 SLPM. For the continuous recirculation and purification through a hot getter, a heat exchanger was employed to reduce the required cooling power. The recirculation speed is limited to 35 SLPM by the gas pump. At this speed, recirculation only adds 18.5 W to the heat load of the system, corresponding to a 95.2 % efficiency of the heat exchanger.

P-odd and CP-odd Four-Quark Contributions to Neutron EDM

In a class of beyond-standard-model theories, CP-odd observables, such as the neutron electric dipole moment, receive significant contributions from flavor-neutral P-odd and CP-odd four-quark operators. However, considerable uncertainties exist in the hadronic matrix elements of these operators strongly affecting the experimental constraints on CP-violating parameters in the theories. Here we study their hadronic matrix elements in combined chiral perturbation theory and nucleon models. We first classify the operators in chiral representations and present the leading-order QCD evolutions. We then match the four-quark operators to the corresponding ones in chiral hadronic theory, finding symmetry relations among the matrix elements. Although this makes lattice QCD calculations feasible, we choose to estimate the non-perturbative matching coefficients in simple quark models. We finally compare the results for the neutron electric dipole moment and P-odd and CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings with the previous studies using naive factorization and QCD sum rules. Our study shall provide valuable insights on the present hadronic physics uncertainties in these observables.

A Model With Dynamical R-parity Breaking and Unstable Gravitino Dark Matter

An unstable gravitino with lifetime longer than $10^{26}$ sec or so has been proposed as a possible dark matter candidate in supergravity models with R-parity breaking. We find a natural realization of this idea in the minimal supersymmetric left-right models where left-right symmetry breaking scale in the few TeV range. It is known that in these models, R-parity must break in order to have parity breaking as required by low energy weak interactions. The sub-eV neutrino masses imply that R-parity breaking effects in this model must be highly suppressed. This in turn makes the gravitino LSP long lived enough, so that it becomes the dark matter of the Universe. It also allows detectable displaced vertices at the LHC from NLSP decays. We present a detailed analysis of the model and some aspects of its rich phenomenology.

Matrix elements of spin-dependent twist-four operators are extracted from recent data on the spin-dependent g_1 structure function of the proton and deuteron in the resonance region. We emphasize the need to include the elastic contributions to the first moments of the structure functions at Q^2 < 2 GeV^2. The coefficients of the 1/Q^2 corrections to the Ellis-Jaffe sum rules are found to be 0.04 \pm 0.02 and 0.03 \pm 0.04 GeV^2 for the proton and neutron, respectively.

Chiral Multiplets of Hadron Currents

Using group theoretical methods, we enumerate possible chiral representations in which hadron interpolating currents can be classified. We give simple examples of currents in each representation, some of which are well known. The classification enables one to find relations among current vacuum correlators in a chirally and/or axial U(1) symmetric phase of QCD in a straightforward way. Besides recovering many well-known relations among two-point correlation functions, a number of novel relations are found.

BREAKUP OF HADRON MASSES AND ENERGY-MOMENTUM TENSOR OF QCD

Hadron masses are shown to be separable in QCD into contributions of quark and gluon kinetic and potential energies, quark masses, and the trace anomaly. The separation is based on a study of the structure of the QCD energy-momentum tensor and its matrix elements in hadron states. The paper contains two parts. In the first part, a detailed discussion of the renormalization properties of the energy-momentum tensor is given. In the second part, a mass separation formula is derived and then applied to the nucleon, pion, and the QCD vacuum. Implications of the results on hadron structure and non-perturbative QCD dynamics are discussed.

HADRON SUBSTRUCTURE PROBED WITH HADRON BEAMS

In this talk, I focus on the quark-gluon structure of hadrons probed using high-energy hadron beams. I start with a brief review on recent major achievements in measuring parton distributions of the nucleon, pion, and kaon, with hadron facilities at CERN and FNAL\@. Then I discuss a number of outstanding questions and interesting physics issues in the field, and point out their intellectual impact on nuclear physics as a whole. While advocating a continuing exploitation of hadron beams at CERN and FNAL, I strongly emphasize the role of a polarized RHIC, where a major nuclear physics program on the structure of hadrons can thrive.

Locality of the Strange Sea in the Nucleon

We introduce the concept of ``locality" for the strange sea in the nucleon, which measures proximity of the strange and anti-strange quarks in the momentum and coordinate spaces. The CCFR data for the strange and anti-strange distributions imply a ``local" strange sea in the momentum space, which is unexpected in QCD and is at variance with the simple meson-cloud model where the strangeness is generated from the virtual transition of the nucleon to a hyperon plus a kaon. We present a simple model to interpret the CCFR data and to correlate momentum and coordinate space locality, yielding an upper bound of 0.005 fm$^2$ on the strange radius. We also discuss significances of locality for other charge-conjugation-odd observables.

PHYSICS OF $Q^2$-DEPENDENCE IN THE NUCLEON'S $G_1(x,Q^2)$ STRUCTURE FUNCTION SUM RULE

I discuss in this talk the physics of the $Q^2$ dependence of the $G_1(x,Q^2)$ structure function sum rule. For $Q^2>3$ GeV$^2$, the $Q^2$ variation is controlled by pure QCD radiative corrections. For $0.5<Q^2<3$ GeV$^2$, the twist-four contribution becomes significant, but stays perturbative. For $Q^2$ below $\sim 0.05$, the sum rule is determined by low-energy theorems. The rapid change of the sum rule between 0.05 and 0.5 GeV$^2$ signals the transition between parton and hadron degrees of freedom.

SOFFER'S INEQUALITY

Various issues surrounding a recently proposed inequality among twist-two quark distributions in the nucleon are discussed. We provide a rigorous derivation of the inequality in QCD, including radiative corrections and scale dependence. We also give a more heuristic, but more physical derivation, from which we show that a similar inequality does not exist among twist-three quark distributions. We demonstrate that the inequality does not constrain the nucleon's tensor charge. Finally we explore physical mechanisms for saturating the inequality, arguing it is unlikely to occur in Nature.

Infrared Renormalons and Power Corrections in Deep-Inelastic Sum Rules

Infrared renormalons and $1/Q^2$ power corrections in deep-inelastic sum rules are studied. The renormalization of operators with power divergence are discussed. The higher-twist terms in the operator product expansion are shown to account for the residual soft contributions survived from the Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg type of cancellation in Feynman diagrams. The presence of some degree of arbitrariness in the twist separation allows one to define the most convenient higher-twist operators suitable for a particular non-perturbative method. The discussion is focused on the Bjorken sum rule, for which the $1/Q^2$ corrections are considered on a lattice.

Probing Quark Fragmentation Functions for Spin-1/2 Baryon Production in Unpolarized $e^+e^-$ Annihilation

We study the measurement of the quark fragmentation functions for spin-1/2 baryon production ($Λ$ and $\bar Λ$, in particular) in unpolarized $e^+e^-$ annihilation. The spin-dependent fragmentation functions $\hat g_1(z)$ and $\hat h_1(z)$ can be probed in the process as a result of quark-antiquark spin correlation and the weak decay of the baryons. The relevant cross section is expressed as a product of the two-jet cross-section, the fragmentation functions, and the differential width of the hyperon decay.
