Simulation of a Xe-based X-ray Polarimeter at 10-30 keV

Polarization detection of X-rays is a non-negligible topic to astrophysical observation. Many polarization detection methods have been well developed for X-rays in the energy range below 10~keV, while the detection at 10-30~keV is rarely discussed. This paper presents a simulation study of a Xe-based gas pixel detector, which can achieve the polarization detection of X-rays at 10-30~keV. To verify the emission angle distribution of photoelectrons, different electromagnetic models in Geant4 were investigated. After a necessary modification by considering the missing factor when sampling the emission angle, a good agreement can be achieved. Moreover, the detection capability of 20~keV polarized photons was discussed and the modulation factor could be 43\%.

Magnetar as Central Engine of Gamma-Ray Bursts: Quasi-Universal Jet, Event Rate and X-ray Luminosity Function of Dipole Radiations

Early shallow-decaying X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) may be attributed to the dipole radiations of newly-born magnetars. Assuming that the GRB jets powered by magnetars are quasi-universal, we find that the jet structure can be parameterized as a uniform jet with a luminosity of $\log L_{\rm j}/{\rm erg\ s^{-1}}=52.68^{+0.76}_{-0.33}$ (1$σ$) and an opening angle $θ_{\rm j}=2.10_{-1.28}^{+1.90}$ (50\% confidence level), surrounding by a power-law decay component with an index of ${-4.00^{+0.27}_{-0.37}}$ (1$σ$). The inferred local GRB rate is $ρ=9.6$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ by including both the typical GRBs and LL-GRBs as the same population. The typical viewing angle is $3.3^{o}$, and may be $20^{o}\sim30^{o}$ for LL-GRBs. The X-ray luminosity function of the dipole radiation wind can be empirically described by a broken power-law function with indices $β_1=0.78^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ and $β_2>1.6$ broken at $\log L_{b, w}/{\rm erg\ s^{-1}}=48.51^{+0.53}_{-0.65}$. In case of that the wind outflow is collimated and co-axial with the GRB jet, we find that the wind structure is similar to the GRB jet, i.e., $\log L_{\rm c, w}/{\rm erg\ s^{-1}}=48.38^{+0.30}_{-0.48}$, $θ_{\rm c, w}={2.65^{o}}_{-1.19^{o}}^{+0.1.73^{o}}$, and $k_{\rm w}=4.57^{+1.21}_{-0.75}$. The observed correlation between the prompt gamma-ray luminosity and X-ray luminosity of the wind may be resulted from the viewing angle effect in such a jet-wind system. Discussion on survey with the X-ray instruments on board the {\em Einstein\ Probe} mission in the soft X-ray band for the jet and wind emission is also presented.

Study of a sealed high gas pressure THGEM detector and response of Alpha particle spectra

A sealed high gas pressure detector working in pure argon is assembled. It consists of a 5 cm $\times$ 5 cm PCB THGEM (THick Gaseous Electron Multipliers). The detector structure and experimental setup are described. The performances under high pressure of 2 atm mainly consist in selecting optimal voltages for ionization region and induction region. The dependence of the shape of Alpha particle spectra measured with relative gas gain on gas pressure (1.3 $\sim$ 2.0 atm) has been studied. The 8 groups of relative gas gain versus working voltage of THGEM expressed by weighting filed $E/P$ are normalized, being consistent with theory. The results show that the air tightness of the chamber is good measured by a sensitive barometer and checked with gas gain. The experimental results are compared with Monte Carlo simulation on energy deposition without gas gain involved.

A Novel Method of Encoded Multiplexing Readout for Micro-pattern Gas Detectors

The requirement of a large number of electronic channels poses a big challenge for Micro-pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) to achieve good spatial resolution. By using the redundancy that at least two neighboring strips record the signal of a particle, a novel method of encoded multiplexing readout for MPGDs is presented in this paper. The method offers a feasible and easily-extensible way of encoding and decoding, and can significantly reduce the number of readout channels. A verification test was carried out on a 5*5 cm2 Thick Gas Electron Multiplier (THGEM) detector using a 8 keV Cu X-ray source with 100um slit, where 166 strips are read out by 21 encoded readout channels. The test results show a good linearity in its position response, and the spatial resolution root-mean-square (RMS) of the test system is about 260 μm. This method has an attractive potential to build large area detectors and can be easily adapted to other detectors like MPGDs.

Experimental studies of THGEM in different Ar/CO2 mixtures

In this paper, the performances of a type of the domestic THGEM (THick Gaseous Electron Multiplier) working in the Ar/CO2 mixtures are reported in details. This kind of single THGEM can provide the gain range from 100 to 1000, which is very suitable for the application in the neutron detection. In order to study its basic characteristics as the references for the development of THGEM based neutron detector, the counting rate plateau, the energy resolution and the gain of the THGEM have been measured in the different Ar/CO2 mixtures with the change of the electrical fields. For the Ar/CO2(90%/10%) gas mixture, a wide counting rate plateau is got from 720V to 770V with the plateau slope of 2.4% / 100 V and the excellent energy resolution about 22% is obtained at the 5.9keV full energy peak of the 55Fe X-ray source.

Experimental study of THGEM detector with mini-rim

The gas gain and energy resolution of single and double THGEM detectors (5{\times}5cm2 effective area) with mini-rims (rim is less than 10μm) were studied. The maximum gain can reach 5{\times}103 and 2{\times}105 for single and double THGEM respectively, while the energy resolution of 5.9 keV X-ray varied from 18% to 28% for both single and double THGEM detectors of different hole sizes and thicknesses. All the experiments were investigated in mixture of noble gases(argon, neon) and small content of other gases(iso-butane,methane) at atmospheric pressure.
