Fermi-surface-sheet dependent electron-phonon coupling in a borocarbide superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C

We performed de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements and band-structure calculations for YNi$_2$B$_2$C. Our improved band structure successfully explained the origins of the large dHvA frequencies $β$ and $ζ$, which were inexplicable in previous works. By comparing experimental effective masses with band masses, we determined the electron-phonon coupling for each orbit. The results showed a clear Fermi-surface-sheet dependence of the electron-phonon coupling strength, especially highlighting that the coupling for the band-28 sheet is very weak, almost absent for the orbit with $B \parallel c$. This finding is consistent with previous observations of dHvA oscillations from this orbit in the mixed state down to very low fields. Amidst growing interest in high-temperature superconductivity driven by electron-phonon coupling in hydrides under high pressure, this study provides foundational data pivotal to precisely understanding electron-phonon coupling.

First Observation of de Haas-van Alphen Effect and Fermi Surfaces in Unconventional Superconductor UTe2

We report the first observation of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect in the novel spin-triplet superconductor UTe2 using high quality single crystals with the high residual resistivity ratio (RRR) over 200. The dHvA frequencies, named alpha and beta, are detected for the field directions between c and a-axes. The frequency of branch beta increases rapidly with the field angle tilted from c to a-axis, while branch alpha splits, owing to the maximal and minimal cross-sectional areas from the same Fermi surface. Both dHvA branches, alpha and beta reveal two kinds of cylindrical Fermi surfaces with a strong corrugation at least for branch alpha. The angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies is in very good agreement with that calculated by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) method taking into account the on-site Coulomb repulsion of U = 2 eV, indicating the main Fermi surfaces are experimentally detected. The detected cyclotron effective masses are large in the range from 32 to 57 m0 . They are approximately 10-20 times lager than the corresponding band masses, consistent with the mass enhancement obtained from the Sommerfeld coefficient and the calculated density of states at the Fermi level. The local density approximation (LDA) calculations of ThTe2 assuming U4+ with the 5f^2 localized model are in less agreement with our experimental results, in spite of the prediction for two cylindrical Fermi surfaces, suggesting a mixed valence states of U4+ and U3+ in UTe2.

Unusual Nonmagnetic Ordered State in CeCoSi Revealed by $^{59}$Co-NMR and NQR Measurements

We performed $^{59}$Co nuclear magnetic and quadrupole resonance (NMR and NQR) measurements under pressure on a single-crystalline CeCoSi, which undergoes an unresolved phase transition at $T_0$. The NQR spectra clearly showed that the phase transition at $T_0$ is nonmagnetic, but any symmetry lowering at the Co site was not seen irrespective of the feature of second-order phase transition. By contrast, the NMR spectra were split by the induced magnetic field perpendicular to the external magnetic field. These results show that the phase below $T_0$ is not a simple paramagnetic state but is most likely electric multipolar ordered state of Ce $4f$ electrons. The development of the Kondo effect by applying pressure is thought to be crucial to stabilize this state and to show novel features beyond commonality of tetragonal Ce-based systems.

Regular-Triangle Trimer and Charge Order Preserving the Anderson Condition in the Pyrochlore Structure of CsW$_2$O$_6$

Since the discovery of the Verwey transition in magnetite, transition metal compounds with pyrochlore structures have been intensively studied as a platform for realizing remarkable electronic phase transitions. We report the discovery of a unique phase transition that preserves the cubic symmetry of the beta-pyrochlore oxide CsW$_2$O$_6$, where each of W 5d electrons are confined in regular-triangle W3 trimers. This trimer formation is an unprecedented self-organization of d electrons, which can be resolved into a charge order satisfying the Anderson condition in a nontrivial way, orbital order caused by the distortion of WO6 octahedra, and the formation of a spin-singlet pair in a regular-triangle trimer. Electronic instability due to the unusual three-dimensional nesting of Fermi surfaces and the localized nature of the 5d electrons characteristic of the pyrochlore oxides were found to play important roles in this unique charge-orbital-spin coupled phenomenon.

Spin-Triplet Superconductivity in UTe2 and Ferromagnetic Superconductors

The spin-triplet state is most likely realized in uranium ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe, UCoGe. The microscopic coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity means that the Cooper pair should be realized under the strong internal field due the ferromagnetism, leading to the spin-triplet state with equal spin pairing. The field-reinforced superconductivity, which is observed in all three materials when the ferromagnetic fluctuations are enhanced, is one of the strong evidences for the spin-triplet superconductivity. We present here the results of a newly discovered spin-triplet superconductor, UTe2, and compare those with the results of ferromagnetic superconductors. Although no magnetic order is found in UTe2, there are similarities between UTe2 and ferromagnetic superconductors. For example, the huge upper critical field exceeding the Pauli limit and the field-reentrant superconductivity for H || b-axis are observed in UTe2, URhGe and UCoGe. We also show the specific heat results on UTe2 in different quality samples, focusing on the residual density of states in the superconducting phase.

73Ge-NMR/NQR Investigation of Magnetic Properties of URhGe

We report 73Ge-NMR and NQR results for ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor URhGe. The magnitude and direction of the internal field, H_int, and parameters of the electric field gradient at the Ge site were determined experimentally. Using powdered polycrystalline samples oriented by different methods, the field dependences of NMR shift and nuclear spin relaxation rates for H_0 // c (easy axis) and H_0 // b were obtained. From the NMR shifts for H_0 // b, we confirmed a gradual suppression of the Curie temperature and observed a phase separation near the spin reorientation. The observation of the phase separation gives microscopic evidence that the spin reorientation under H_0 // b is of first order at low temperatures. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 indicates that the magnetic fluctuations are suppressed for H_0 // c, whereas the fluctuations remain strongly for H_0 // b. The enhancements of both 1/T_1T and the nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate 1/T_2 for H_0 // b toward the spin reorientation field suggest that the field-induced superconductivity in URhGe emerges under the magnetic fluctuations along the b axis and the c axis.

Detection of an Unconventional Superconducting Phase in the Vicinity of the Strong First-Order Magnetic Transition in CrAs Using ^75As-Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance

Pressure-induced superconductivity was recently discovered in the binary helimagnet CrAs. We report the results of measurements of nuclear quadrupole resonance for CrAs under pressure. In the vicinity of the critical pressure P_c between the helimagnetic (HM) and paramagnetic (PM) phases, a phase separation is observed. The large internal field remaining in the phase-separated HM state indicates that the HM phase disappears through a strong first-order transition. This indicates the absence of a quantum critical point in CrAs; however, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 reveals that substantial magnetic fluctuations are present in the PM state. The absence of a coherence effect in 1/T_1 in the superconducting state provides evidence that CrAs is the first Cr-based unconventional superconductor.

153Eu and 69,71Ga Zero-Field NMR Study of Antiferromagnetic State in EuGa4

We report $^{153}$Eu and $^{69,71}$Ga NMR under a zero magnetic field on the antiferromagnetic state of EuGa$_{4}$ with $T_{\rm{N}}\approx 16$ K. We have successfully observed a $^{153}$Eu zero-field NMR signal with well-resolved nuclear quadrupole splitting in the antiferromagnetic state of EuGa$_{4}$. $^{69,71}$Ga zero-field NMR spectra were also observed below $T_{\rm{N}}$. The internal field and nuclear quadrupole frequency are estimated from a simulation of the spectra by the exact diagonalization of the nuclear spin Hamiltonian matrix. The asymmetrically split zero-field NMR spectra were explained by considering a configuration of the magnetic moments of Eu$^{2+}$ lying in the basal $ab$-plane. The temperature dependence of the internal field, which is proportional to the sublattice magnetization, can be explained by the Brillouin function with $J=S=7/2$

Fermi surface in KFe2As2 determined via de Haas-van Alphen oscillation measurements

We have completely determined the Fermi surface in KFe$_2$As$_2$ via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements. Fundamental frequencies $ε$, $α$, $ζ$, and $β$ are observed in KFe$_2$As$_2$. The first one is attributed to a hole cylinder near the X point of the Brillouin zone, while the others to hole cylinders at the $Γ$ point. We also observe magnetic breakdown frequencies between $α$ and $ζ$ and suggest a plausible explanation for them. The experimental frequencies show deviations from frequencies predicted by band structure calculations. Large effective masses up to 19 $m_e$ for $B \parallel c$ have been found, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. The carrier number and Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat are estimated to be 1.01 -- 1.03 holes per formula unit and 82 -- 94 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$, respectively, which are consistent with the chemical stoichiometry and a direct measure of 93 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ [H. Fukazawa \textit{et al}., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{80SA}, SA118 (2011)]. The Sommerfeld coefficient is about 9 times enhanced over a band value, suggesting the importance of low-energy spin and/or orbital fluctuations, and places KFe$_2$As$_2$ among strongly correlated metals. We have also performed dHvA measurements on Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and have observed the $α$ and $β$ frequencies.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in Mineral Calaverite AuTe2

The pressure dependences of resistivity and ac susceptibility have been measured in the mineral calaverite AuTe$_2$. Resistivity clearly shows a first-order phase transition into a high-pressure phase, consistent with the results of a previous structural analysis. We found zero resistivity and a diamagnetic shielding signal at low temperatures in the high-pressure phase, which clearly indicates the appearance of superconductivity. Our experimental results suggest that bulk superconductivity appears only in the high-pressure phase. For AuTe$_2$, the highest superconducting transition temperature under pressure is $T_{\rm c}$ = 2.3 K at 2.34 GPa; it was $T_{\rm c}$ = 4.0 K for Pt-doped (Au$_{0.65}$Pt$_{0.35}$)Te$_2$. The difference in $T_{\rm c}$ between the two systems is discussed on the basis of the results obtained using the band calculations and McMillan's formula.

Band Calculations for Ce Compounds with AuCu$_{3}$-type Crystal Structure on the basis of Dynamical Mean Field Theory II. - CeIn$_{3}$ and CeSn$_{3}$

Band calculations for Ce compounds with the AuCu$_{3}$-type crystal structure were carried out on the basis of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The results of applying the calculation to CeIn$_{3}$ and CeSn$_{3}$ are presented as the second in a series of papers. The Kondo temperature and crystal-field splitting are obtained, respectively, as 190 and 390 K (CeSn$_{3}$), 8 and 160 K (CeIn$_{3}$ under ambient pressure), and 30 and 240 K (CeIn$_{3}$ at a pressure of 2.75 GPa). Experimental results for the photoemission spectrum are reasonably well reproduced. In CeSn$_{3}$, a Fermi surface (FS) structure similar to that obtained by a refined calculation based on the local density approximation (LDA) is obtained. In CeIn$_{3}$, the topology of the FS structure is different from that obtained by the LDA calculation but seems to be consistent with the results of de Haas-van Alphen experiments. Cyclotron mass of the correct magnitude is obtained in both compounds. The experimental result for the angular correlation of the electron-positron annihilation radiation is reasonably well reproduced on the basis of the itinerant 4f picture. A band calculation for CeIn$_{3}$ in the antiferromagnetic state was carried out, and it was shown that the occupied 4f state should have a very shallow level.

Large and homogeneous mass enhancement in the rattling-induced superconductor KOs$_2$O$_6$

We have determined the Fermi surface in KOs$_2$O$_6$ ($T_c$ = 9.6 K and $B_{c2} \sim$ 32 T) via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements and a band structure calculation. We find effective masses up to 26(1) $m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass), which are unusually heavy for compounds where the mass enhancement is mostly due to electron-phonon interactions. Orbit-resolved mass enhancement parameters $λ_{dHvA}$ are large but fairly homogeneous, concentrated in the range 5 -- 8. We discuss origins of the large homogeneous mass enhancement in terms of rattling motion of the K ions.

Rattling and Superconducting Properties of the Cage Compound GaxV2Al20

Low-energy rattling modes and their effects on superconductivity are studied in the cage compound GaxV2Al20. A series of polycrystalline samples of 0 < x =< 0.6 are examined through resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. A weak-coupling BCS superconductivity is observed below Tc = 1.4-1.7 K for all the samples. For small Ga contents below 0.20, approximately 30% of the cages are occupied by rattling Al atoms having an Einstein temperature TE of 23 K, probably with most Ga atoms substituting for the cage-forming Al atoms. For higher Ga contents, approximately 0.05 Ga and 0.25-0.35 Al atoms coexist statistically inside the cages and behave as rattlers with TE ~ 8 and 23 K, respectively. A significant effect of Ga rattling on the superconductivity is clearly evidenced by the observation of a sharp rise in Tc by 8% at x = 0.20 when 0.05 Ga atoms are introduced into the case. Probably, the electron-phonon interaction is significantly enhanced by an additional contribution to the phonon density of states from the extremely low energy rattling modes of Ga atoms. In addition, a large softening of the acoustic modes is observed for x => 0.20, suggesting that the cage itself becomes anomalously soft in the presence of low-energy Ga rattling modes.

^{59}Co-Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance studies on YCoGe --- Comparison between YCoGe and UCoGe ---

We have performed ^{59}Co-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on YCoGe, which is a reference compound of ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe, in order to investigate the magnetic properties at the Co site. Magnetic and superconducting transitions were not observed down to 0.3 K, but a conventional metallic behavior was found in YCoGe, although its crystal structure is similar to that of UCoGe. From the comparison between experimental results of two compounds, the ferromagnetism and superconductivity observed in UCoGe originate from the U-5f electrons.

Complete Fermi surface in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ observed via Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation measurements on detwinned single crystals

We show that the Fermi surface (FS) in the antiferromagnetic phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is composed of one hole and two electron pockets, all of which are three dimensional and closed, in sharp contrast to the FS observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Considerations on the carrier compensation and Sommerfeld coefficient rule out existence of unobserved FS pockets of significant sizes. A standard band structure calculation reasonably accounts for the observed FS, despite the overestimated ordered moment. The mass enhancement, the ratio of the effective mass to the band mass, is 2--3.

Cyclotron resonance and mass enhancement by electron correlation in KFe$_2$As$_2$

Cyclotron resonance (CR) measurements for the Fe-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ are performed. One signal for CR is observed, and is attributed to the two-dimensional $α$ Fermi surface at the $Γ$ point. We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4$\pm$0.05)$m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass)] and de-Haas van Alphen (dHvA) results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and dHvA results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$.

On the Hidden Order in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ --- Antiferro Hexadecapole Order and its Consequences

An antiferro ordering of an electric hexadecapole moment is discussed as a promising candidate for the long standing mystery of the hidden order phase in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. Based on localized $f$-electron picture, we discuss the rationale of the selected multipole and the consequences of the antiferro hexadecapole order of $xy(x^{2}-y^{2})$ symmetry. The mean-field solutions and the collective excitations from them explain reasonably significant experimental observations: the strong anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility, characteristic behavior of pressure versus magnetic field or temperature phase diagrams, disappearance of inelastic neutron-scattering intensity out of the hidden order phase, and insensitiveness of the NQR frequency at Ru-sites upon ordering. A consistency with the strong anisotropy in the magnetic responses excludes all the multipoles in two-dimensional representations, such as $(O_{yz},O_{zx})$. The expected azimuthal angle dependences of the resonant X-ray scattering amplitude are given. The $(x^{2}-y^{2})$-type antiferro quadrupole should be induced by an in-plane magnetic field along $[110]$, which is reflected in the thermal expansion and the elastic constant of the transverse $(c_{11}-c_{12})/2$ mode. The $(x^{2}-y^{2})$-type [$(xy)$-type] antiferro quadrupole is also induced by applying the uniaxial stress along $[110]$ direction [$[100]$ direction]. A detection of these induced antiferro quadrupoles under the in-plane magnetic field or the uniaxial stress using the resonant X-ray scattering provides a direct redundant test for the proposed order parameter.

Bandstructure and Fermi Surfaces of CeRh3B2

The electronic bandstructure and the Fermi surfaces of ferromagnetic CeRh3B2 are calculated by using FLAPW and LSDA+U method. As assuming several kinds of the ground state to describe the 4f electronic state, we propose a fully orbital- and spin-polarized state |lz=0, sx=1/2> as the ground state, instead of the conventional LS-coupled CEF ground state, generally expected in typical 4f compounds. This is supported by the fact that both the observed magnetic moment and the observed dHvA frequencies are well explained by the calculated electronic structure and the Fermi surfaces. The unconventional ground state is stabilized by the strong 4f-4f direct mixing between the neighbored Ce atoms along the extremely small distance along the c-axis in the hexagonal crystal cell.

Comment on "Quantum Criticality and Nodal Superconductivity in the FeAs-Based Superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$"

In a recent Letter [J. K. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 087005 (2010)], Dong \textit{et al}. have observed a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of resistivity $ρ$ in KFe$_2$As$_2$ at the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ = 5 T parallel to the c axis and have suggested the existence of a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $B_{c2}$. In this comment, we argue that observation of a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of $ρ$ in a sample showing broad resistive transitions does not constitute evidence for a QCP and that recent dHvA results do not support the proposed QCP.

Fermi surface and mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$ from de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements

We report on a band structure calculation and de Haas-van Alphen measurements of KFe$_2$As$_2$. Three cylindrical Fermi surfaces are found. Effective masses of electrons range from 6 to 18$m_e$, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. Remarkable discrepancies between the calculated and observed Fermi surface areas and the large mass enhancement ($\gtrsim 3$) highlight the importance of electronic correlations in determining the electronic structures of iron pnicitide superconductors.

Upper critical field and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in KOs$_2$O$_6$ measured in a hybrid magnet

Magnetic torque measurements have been performed on a KOs$_2$O$_6$ single crystal in magnetic fields up to 35.3 T and at temperatures down to 0.6 K. The upper critical field is determined to be $\sim$30 T. De Haas-van Alphen oscillations are observed. A large mass enhancement of (1+$λ$) = $m^* / m_{band}$ = 7.6 is found. It is suggested that, for the large upper critical field to be reconciled with Pauli paramagnetic limiting, the observed mass enhancement must be of electron-phonon origin for the most part.

Why the hidden order in URu2Si2 is still hidden - one simple answer

For more than two decades, the nonmagnetic anomaly observed around 17.5 K in URu2Si2, has been investigated intensively. However, any kind of fingerprint for the lattice anomaly has not been observed. Therefore, the order has been called "the hidden order". One simple answer to why the hidden order is still hidden is presented from the space group analysis. The second order phase transition from I4/mmm (No. 139) to P4_2/mnm (No. 136) does not need any kind of lattice distortion in this system, and allows the NQR frequency at Ru-site unchanged. It is compatible with O_{xy}-type anti-ferro quadrupole ordering with Q=(0, 0, 1). The characteristics of the hidden order are discussed based on the local 5f^2 electron picture.

59Co-NMR Probe for Stepwise Magnetization and Magnetotransport in SrCo6O11 with Metallic Kagome Layer and Triangular Lattice with Local Moments

We report on novel magnetic and electronic properties of SrCo6O11 that exhibits a unique stepwise magnetization and its relevant magnetotransport phenomena investigated by the site-selective 59Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at zero and applied magnetic fields. This compound is composed of three Co sites in the unit cell, i.e., Co(1) in the metallic Kagome layer, a Co(2) dimerized pillar between the layers and Co(3) in the triangular lattice. Zero-field NMR spectra have revealed that large local moments at the Co(3) sites are magnetically ordered without any trace of bulk magnetization M at zero field. The field-swept NMR spectra show that the internal hyperfine field at the Co(1) site is derived from fully polarized moments Ms at the Co(3) sites in the "1"-plateau state at fields higher than 2.5 T, whereas it is partially cancelled out in the "1/3"-plateau state in which one-third of Ms is induced at intermediate fields once a small field is applied. It has been clarified from a microscopic point of view that the local moments at Co(3) site undergo a field-induced ferrimagnetic (up-up-down)-to-ferromagnetic (up-up-up) transition, which is consistent with the evidence obtained from the recent neutron diffraction experiment. The Co(1) Kagome layer and the dimerized pillar Co(2) site between the layers are of nonmagnetic origin, suggesting that the nearly quasi-2D metallic conductivity is dominated by nonmagnetic Co(1) and Co(2) sites. Consequently, unique magneto-transport phenomena observed in SrCo6O11 are demonstrated owing to the interaction between the conduction electrons at the Co(1) and Co(2) sites and the local moments at Co(3) sites.

Effective Crystalline Electric Field Potential in a j-j Coupling Scheme

We propose an effective model on the basis of a $j$-$j$ coupling scheme to describe local $f$-electron states for realistic values of Coulomb interaction $U$ and spin-orbit coupling $λ$, for future development of microscopic theory of magnetism and superconductivity in $f^n$-electron systems, where $n$ is the number of local $f$ electrons. The effective model is systematically constructed by including the effect of a crystalline electric field (CEF) potential in the perturbation expansion in terms of $1/λ$. In this paper, we collect all the terms up to the first order of $1/λ$. Solving the effective model, we show the results of the CEF states for each case of $n$=2$\sim$5 with $O_{\rm h}$ symmetry in comparison with those of the Stevens Hamiltonian for the weak CEF. In particular, we carefully discuss the CEF energy levels in an intermediate coupling region with $λ/U$ in the order of 0.1 corresponding to actual $f$-electron materials between the $LS$ and $j$-$j$ coupling schemes. Note that the relevant energy scale of $U$ is the Hund's rule interaction. It is found that the CEF energy levels in the intermediate coupling region can be quantitatively reproduced by our modified $j$-$j$ coupling scheme, when we correctly take into account the corrections in the order of $1/λ$ in addition to the CEF terms and Coulomb interactions which remain in the limit of $λ$=$\infty$. As an application of the modified $j$-$j$ coupling scheme, we discuss the CEF energy levels of filled skutterudites with $T_{\rm h}$ symmetry.
