Hidden Structural and Superconducting Phase Induced in Antiperovskite Arsenide SrPd$_{3}$As

Enriching the material variation often contributes to the progress of materials science. We have discovered for the first time antiperovskite arsenide SrPd$_{3}$As and revealed a hidden structural and superconducting phase in Sr(Pd$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{3}$As. The Pd-rich samples (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.2) had the same non-centrosymmetric (NCS) tetragonal structure (a space group of $I41md$) as SrPd$_{3}$P. For the samples with 0.3 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7, a centrosymmetric (CS) tetragonal structure ($P4/nmm$) identical to that of SrPt$_{3}$P was found to appear, accompanied by superconductivity at a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) up to 3.7 K. In the samples synthesized with Pt-rich nominal compositions (0.8 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.0), Sr$_{2}$(Pd,Pt)$_{8-y}$As$_{1+y}$ with an intergrowth structure (CS-orthorhombic with Cmcm) was crystallized. The phase diagram obtained for Sr(Pd,Pt)$_{3}$As was analogous to that of (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P in that superconductivity ($T_\mathrm{c}$ $\geq$ 2 K) occurred in the CS phases induced by substitutions to the NCS phases. This study indicates the potential for further material variation expansion and the importance of elemental substitutions to reveal hidden phases in related antiperovskites.

High-pressure synthesis and superconductivity of the novel Laves phase BaIr2

Superconductors comprising 5d transition metals of Ir and Pt have been widely explored because they have the potential of unique superconductivity caused by the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI). We successfully synthesized BaIr2, the last Laves phase remaining unsynthesized in the MgCu2-type AM2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; M = Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt). BaIr2 was crystallized at 925 C under a pressure of 3.3 GPa via a solid-state reaction between Ba and Ir powders; it was found to have the longest a-lattice constant of 8.038(1) A among AM2. BaIr2 exhibited bulk superconductivity at a transition temperature (Tc) of 2.7 K. BaIr2 was found to have a type-II superconductor with an upper critical field of 67.7 kOe, which was above the Pauli paramagnetic limit (50 kOe). The electron-phonon coupling constant and normalized specific heat jump were measured to be 0.63 and 1.2, respectively, indicating that BaIr2 is a weak-coupling superconductor. The electronic-structure calculations for BaIr2 revealed that the Ir-5d states are dominant at the Fermi energy (EF) and the density of states at the EF is strongly affected by SOI as in the case of CaIr2 and SrIr2.

Elastoresistance measurements on CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ and KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with the Fe site of $C_{2v}$ symmetry

We report resistance and elastoresistance measurements on (Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, and KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$. The Fe-site symmetry is $D_{2d}$ in the first compound but $C_{2v}$ in the latter two, which lifts the degeneracy of the Fe $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. The temperature dependence of the resistance and elastoresistance is similar between the three compounds. Especially, the [110] elastoresistance is enhanced with decreasing temperature irrespective of the Fe-site symmetry. This appears to be in conflict with recent Raman scattering studies on CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, which suggest the absence of nematic fluctuations. We consider possible ways of reconciliation and suggest that the present result is important in elucidating the origin of in-plane resistivity anisotropy in iron-based superconductors.

Experimental and Computational Determination of Optimal Boron Content in Layered Superconductor Sc$_{20}$C$_{8-x}$B$_x$C$_{20}$

It is generally difficult to quantify the amounts of light elements in materials because of their low X-ray-scattering power, as this means that they cannot be easily estimated via X-ray analyses. Meanwhile, the recently reported layered superconductor, Sc$_{20}$C$_{8-x}$B$_x$C$_{20}$, requires a small amount of boron, which is a light element, for its structural stability. In this context, here, we quantitatively evaluate the optimal $x$ value using both the experimental and computational approaches. Using the high-pressure synthesis approach that can maintain the starting composition even after sintering, we obtain the Sc$_{20}$(C,B)$_{8}$C$_{20}$ phase by the reaction of the previously reported Sc$_{15}$C$_{19}$ and B (Sc$_{15}$B$_y$C$_{19}$). Our experiments demonstrate that an increase in $y$ values promotes the phase formation of the Sc$_{20}$(C,B)$_{8}$C$_{20}$ structure; however, there appears to be an upper limit to the nominal $y$ value to form this phase. The maximum $T_\mathrm{c}$ $(=7.6\text{ K})$ is found to correspond with the actual $x$ value of $x \sim 5$ under the assumption that the sample with the same $T_\mathrm{c}$ as the reported value $(=7.7\text{ K})$ possesses the optimal $x$ amount. Moreover, we construct the energy convex hull diagram by calculating the formation enthalpy based on first principles. Our computational results indicate that the composition of Sc$_{20}$C$_4$B$_4$C$_{20}$ $(x=4)$ is the most thermodynamically stable, which is reasonably consistent with the experimentally obtained value.

Structural phase transitions and superconductivity induced in antiperovskite phosphide CaPd$_3$P

In this study, we succeeded in synthesizing new antiperovskite phosphides $M$Pd$_3$P ($M$ = Ca, Sr, Ba) and discovered the appearance of a superconducting phase (0.17 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.55) in a solid solution (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P. Three perovskite-related crystal structures were identified in (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P and a phase diagram was built on the basis of experimental results. The first phase transition from centrosymmetric ($Pnma$) to non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic ($Aba$2) occurred in CaPd$_3$P near room temperature. The phase transition temperature decreased as Ca$^{2+}$ was replaced with a larger-sized isovalent Sr$^{2+}$. Bulk superconductivity at a critical temperature ($T$$_c$) of approximately 3.5 K was observed in a range of $x$ = 0.17 - 0.55; this was associated with the centrosymmetric orthorhombic phase. Thereafter, a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal phase ($I$41$md$) remained stable for 0.6 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 1.0, and superconductivity was significantly suppressed as samples with $x$ = 0.75 and 1.0 showed ($T$$_c$) values as low as 0.32 K and 57 mK, respectively. For further substitution with a larger-sized isovalent Ba$^{2+}$, namely (Sr$_{1-y}$Ba$_y$)Pd$_3$P, the tetragonal phase continued throughout the composition range. BaPd$_3$P no longer showed superconductivity down to 20 mK. Since the inversion symmetry of structure and superconductivity can be precisely controlled in (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P, this material may offer a unique opportunity to study the relationship between inversion symmetry and superconductivity.

Novel Interplay between High-Tc Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism in Tl-based Six-CuO2-Layered Cuprates : 205 Tl and 63 Cu-NMR Probes

We report $^{63}$Cu- and $^{205}$Tl-NMR studies on six-layered ($n$=6) high-$T_c$ superconducting (SC) cuprate TlBa$_2$Ca$_5$Cu$_6$O$_{14+δ}$ (Tl1256) with $T_c\sim$100 K, which reveal that antiferromagnetic (AFM) order takes place below $T_{\rm N}\sim$170 K. In this compound, four underdoped inner CuO$_2$ planes ($n$(IP)=4) sandwiched by two outer planes (OPs) are responsible for the onset of AFM order, whereas the nearly optimally-doped OPs responsible for the onset of bulk SC. It is pointed out that an increase in the out-of-plane magnetic interaction within an intra-unit-cell causes $T_{\rm N}\sim$ 45 K for Tl1245 with $n$(IP)=3 to increase to $\sim$170 K for Tl1256 with $n$(IP)=4. It is remarkable that the marked increase in $T_{\rm N}$ and the AFM moments for the IPs does not bring about any reduction in $T_c$, since $T_c\sim 100$ K is maintained for both compounds with nearly optimally doped OP. We highlight the fact that the SC order for $n\ge5$ is mostly dominated by the long-range in-plane SC correlation even in the multilayered structure, which is insensitive to the magnitude of $T_{\rm N}$ and the AFM moments at the IPs or the AFM interaction among the IPs. These results demonstrate a novel interplay between the SC and AFM orders when the charge imbalance between the IPs and OP is significantly large.

Co-co-doping effect for (Ca,RE)FeAs2 sintered bulk

Superconducting properties of Co-co-doped (Ca,RE)FeAs2 ((Ca,RE)112: RE = La, Pr) were investigated. Co-co-doping increased Tc of (Ca,Pr)112 while Mn-co-doping suppressed superconductivity of (Ca,RE)112. Co-co-doped (Ca,La)112 showed large diamagnetic screening and sharper superconducting transition than Co-free (Ca,La)112. Tczero observed in resistivity measurements increased from 14 K to 30 K by Co-co-doping, while Tconset was not increased. The critical current density (Jc) of Co-co-doped (Ca,La)112 were approximately 2.1 x 104 Acm-2 and 3.2 x 103 Acm-2 at 2 K and 25 K, respectively, near zero field. These relatively high Jcs and large diamagnetic screening observed in susceptibility measurement as for polycrystalline bulks suggest bulk superconductivity of Co-co-doped (Ca,RE)112 compounds.

Dependences on RE of Superconducting Properties of Transition Metal co-doped (Ca,RE)FeAs2 with RE = La-Gd

Dependence of superconducting properties of (Ca,RE)(Fe,TM)As2 [(Ca,RE)112, TM: Co, Ni)] on RE elements (RE = La-Gd) was systematically investigated. Improvement of superconducting properties by Co or Ni co-doping was observed for all (Ca,RE)112, which is similar to Co-co-doped (Ca,La)112 or (Ca,Pr)112. Tc of Co-co-doped samples decreased from 38 K for RE = La to 29 K for RE = Gd with decreasing ionic radii of RE3+. However, Co-co-doped (Ca,Eu)112 showed exceptionally low Tc = 21 K probably due to the co-existence of Eu3+ and Eu2+ suggested by longer interlayer distance dFe-Fe of (Ca,Eu)112 than other (Ca,RE)112.

Pressure Effects on Superconducting Properties of the BiS2-Based Superconductor Bi2(O,F)S2

Pressure effects on a recently discovered BiS2-based superconductor Bi2(O,F)S2 (Tc = 5.1 K) were examined via two different methods; high pressure resistivity measurement and high pressure annealing. The effects of these two methods on the superconducting properties of Bi2(O,F)S2 were significantly different although in both methods hydrostatic pressure is applied to the sample by the cubic-anvil-type apparatus. In high pressure resistivity measurement, Tc linearly decreased at the rate of -1.2 K GPa-1. In contrast, the Tc of 5.1 K is maintained after high pressure annealing under 2 GPa and 470°C of optimally doped sample despite significant change of lattice parameters. In addition, superconductivity was observed in fluorine-free Bi2OS2 after high pressure annealing. These results suggest that high pressure annealing would cause a unique effect on physical properties of layered compounds.

Identifying the `Fingerprint' of Antiferromagnetic Spin-Fluctuations on Iron-Pnictide Superconductivity

Cooper pairing in the iron-based high-Tc superconductors is often conjectured to involve bosonic fluctuations. Among the candidates are antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations and d-orbital fluctuations amplified by phonons. Any such electron-boson interaction should alter the electron's `self-energy', and then become detectable through consequent modifications in the energy dependence of the electron's momentum and lifetime. Here we introduce a theoretical/experimental approach aimed at identifying the relevant fluctuations of iron-based superconductors by measuring effects of their self-energy. We use quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging techniques in LiFeAs to reveal strongly momentum-space anisotropic self-energy signatures that are focused along the Fe-Fe (interband scattering) direction, where the spin fluctuations of LiFeAs are concentrated. These effects coincide in energy with perturbations to the density-of-states N(ω) usually associated with the Cooper pairing interaction. We show that all the measured phenomena comprise the predicted QPI `fingerprint' of a self-energy due to antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations, thereby distinguishing them as the predominant electron-boson interaction.

Synthesis and physical properties of Ca1-xRExFeAs2 with RE = La ~ Gd

Synthesis of a series of layered iron arsenides Ca1-xRExFeAs2 (112) was attempted by heating at 1000 C under a high-pressure of 2 GPa. The 112 phase successfully forms with RE = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd, while Tb, Dy and Ho substituted and RE free samples does not contain the 112 phase. The Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd doped Ca1-xRExFeAs2 are new compounds. All of them exhibit superconducting transition except for the Ce doped sample. The behaviour of the critical temperature, with the RE ionic radii have been investigated.

Two distinct superconducting states in KFe$_2$As$_2$ under high pressure

We report measurements of ac magnetic susceptibility $χ_{ac}$ and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in KFe$_2$As$_2$ under high pressure up to 24.7 kbar. The pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ changes from negative to positive across $P_c \sim 18$ kbar as previously reported. The ratio of the upper critical field to $T_c$, i.e, $B_{c2} / T_c$, is enhanced above $P_c$, and the shape of $χ_{ac}$ vs field curves qualitatively changes across $P_c$. DHvA oscillations smoothly evolve across $P_c$ and indicate no drastic change in the Fermi surface up to 24.7 kbar. Three dimensionality increases with pressure, while effective masses show decreasing trends. We suggest a crossover from a nodal to a full-gap $s$ wave as a possible explanation.

Effect of doping on the magnetostructural ordered phase of iron arsenides: A comparative study of the resistivity anisotropy in the doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ with doping into three different sites

In order to unravel a role of doping in the iron-based superconductors, we investigated the in-plane resistivity for BaFe$_2$As$_2$ doped at either of the three different lattice sites, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, and Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, focusing on the doping effect in the low-temperature antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic (AFO) phase. A major role of doping in the high-temperature paramagnetic/tetragonal (PT) phase is known to change the Fermi surface by supplying charge carriers or by exerting chemical pressure. In the AFO phase, we found a clear correlation between the magnitude of residual resistivity and resistivity anisotropy. This indicates that the resistivity anisotropy originates from the anisotropic impurity scattering from dopant atoms. The magnitude of residual resistivity is also found to be a parameter controlling the suppression rate of AFO ordering temperature $T_s$. Therefore, the dominant role of doping in the AFO phase is to introduce disorder to the system, distinct from that in the PT phase.

Fermi surface in KFe2As2 determined via de Haas-van Alphen oscillation measurements

We have completely determined the Fermi surface in KFe$_2$As$_2$ via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements. Fundamental frequencies $ε$, $α$, $ζ$, and $β$ are observed in KFe$_2$As$_2$. The first one is attributed to a hole cylinder near the X point of the Brillouin zone, while the others to hole cylinders at the $Γ$ point. We also observe magnetic breakdown frequencies between $α$ and $ζ$ and suggest a plausible explanation for them. The experimental frequencies show deviations from frequencies predicted by band structure calculations. Large effective masses up to 19 $m_e$ for $B \parallel c$ have been found, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. The carrier number and Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat are estimated to be 1.01 -- 1.03 holes per formula unit and 82 -- 94 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$, respectively, which are consistent with the chemical stoichiometry and a direct measure of 93 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ [H. Fukazawa \textit{et al}., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{80SA}, SA118 (2011)]. The Sommerfeld coefficient is about 9 times enhanced over a band value, suggesting the importance of low-energy spin and/or orbital fluctuations, and places KFe$_2$As$_2$ among strongly correlated metals. We have also performed dHvA measurements on Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and have observed the $α$ and $β$ frequencies.

Hysteretic superconducting resistive transition in Ba0.07K0.93Fe2As2

We have observed hysteresis in superconducting resistive transition curves of Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c\sim$8 K) below about 1 K for in-plane fields. The hysteresis is not observed as the field is tilted away from the $ab$ plane by 20$^{\circ}$ or more. The temperature and angle dependences of the upper critical field indicate a strong paramagnetic effect for in-plane fields. We suggest that the hysteresis can be attributed to a first-order superconducting transition due to the paramagnetic effect. Magnetic torque data are also shown.

Understanding the re-entrant superconducting phase diagram of an iron-pnictide Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

Recently, a very rich phase diagram has been obtained for an iron-based superconductor Ca4Al2O6Fe2(As1-xPx)2. It has been revealed that nodeless (x=0) and nodal (x = 1) superconductivity are separated by an antiferromagnetic phase. Here we study the origin of this peculiar phase diagram using a five orbital model constructed from first principles band calculation, and applying the fluctuation exchange approximation assuming spin fluctuation mediated pairing. Based on the calculation results, we propose a scenario where the frustration in momentum space degrades superconductivity in the intermediate x regime, while antiferromangetism takes place due to a very good nesting. In order to see whether the present theoretical scenario is consistent with the actual nature of the competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism, we also perform hydrostatic pressure experiment for Ca4Al2O6Fe2(As1-xPx)2. In the intermediate x regime where antiferromagnetism occurs at ambient pressure, applying hydrostatic pressure smears out the antiferromagnetic transition, but superconductivity does not take place. This supports our scenario that superconductivity is suppressed by the momentum space frustration in the intermediate x regime, apart from the presence of the antiferromangnetism.

High-Tc superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in multilayer cuprates: 63Cu- and 19F-NMR on five-layer Ba2Ca4Cu5O10(F,O)2

We report systematic Cu- and F-NMR measurements of five-layered high-Tc cuprates Ba2Ca4Cu5O10(F,O)2. It is revealed that antiferromagnetism (AFM) uniformly coexists with superconductivity (SC) in underdoped regions, and that the critical hole density pc for AFM is ~ 0.11 in the five-layered compound. We present the layer-number dependence of AFM and SC phase diagrams in hole-doped cuprates, where pc for n-layered compounds, pc(n), increases from pc(1) ~ 0.02 in LSCO or pc(2) ~ 0.05 in YBCO to pc(5) ~ 0.11. The variation of pc(n) is attributed to interlayer magnetic coupling, which becomes stronger with increasing n. In addition, we focus on the ground-state phase diagram of CuO2 planes, where AFM metallic states in slightly doped Mott insulators change into the uniformly mixed phase of AFM and SC and into simple d-wave SC states. The maximum Tc exists just outside the quantum critical hole density, at which AFM moments on a CuO2 plane collapse at the ground state, indicating an intimate relationship between AFM and SC. These characteristics of the ground state are accounted for by the Mott physics based on the t-J model; the attractive interaction of high-Tc SC, which raises Tc as high as 160 K, is an in-plane superexchange interaction Jin (~ 0.12 eV), and the large Jin binds electrons of opposite spins between neighboring sites. It is the Coulomb repulsive interaction U ~ (> 6 eV) between Cu-3d electrons that plays a central role in the physics behind high-Tc phenomena.

Potential antiferromagnetic fluctuations in hole-doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ba_{1-x}K_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} studied by ^{75}As nuclear magnetic

We have performed ^{75}As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) on single crystalline Ba_{1-x}K_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} for x = 0.27-1. ^{75}As nuclear quadruple resonance frequency (ν_{Q}) increases linearly with increasing x. The Knight shift K in normal state shows Pauli paramagnetic behavior with slight temperature T dependence. The value of K increases gradually with increasing x. By contrast, nuclear spin- lattice relaxation rate 1/T_{1} in normal state has a large T-dependence, which indicates existence of large antiferomagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations for all x. The T-dependence of 1/T_{1} shows a gap-like behavior below approximately 100 K for 0.6 < x < 0.9. These behaviors are well explained by the change of band structure with expansion of hole Fermi surfaces and shrink and disappearance of electron Fermi surfaces at Brillouin zone (BZ) with increasing x. The anisotropy of 1/T_{1}, represented by a ratio of 1/T_{1ab} to 1/T_{1c}, is always larger than 1 for all x, which indicates that the stripe-type AF fluctuations is dominant in this system. The K in superconducting (SC) state decreases, which corresponds to appearance of spin-singlet superconductivity. The T dependence of 1/T_{1} in SC state indicates multiple-SC-gap feature. A simple two gap model analysis shows that the larger superconducting gap gradually decreases with increasing x from 0.27 to 1 and smaller gap decreases rapidly and nearly vanishes for x > 0.6 where the electron pockets in BZ disappear.

Antiferromagnetism, superconductivity, and pseudogap in three-layered high-T_c cuprates Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_6(F,O)_2 probed by Cu-NMR

We report on the phase diagram of antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC) in three-layered Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_6(F,O)_2 by means of Cu-NMR measurements. It is demonstrated that AFM and SC uniformly coexist in three-layered compounds as well as in four- and five-layered ones. The critical hole density p_c for the long range AFM order is determined as p_c ~ 0.075, which is larger than p_c ~ 0.02 and 0.055 in single- and bi-layered compounds, and smaller than p_c ~ 0.08-0.09 and 0.10-0.11 in four- and five-layered compounds, respectively. This variation of p_c is attributed to the magnetic interlayer coupling which becomes stronger as the stacking number of CuO_2 layers increases; that is, the uniform coexistence of AFM and SC is a universal phenomenon in underdoped regions when a magnetic interlayer coupling is strong enough to stabilize an AFM ordering. In addition, we highlight an unusual pseudogap behavior in three-layered compounds -- the gap behavior in low-energy magnetic excitations collapses in an underdoped region where the ground state is the AFM-SC mixed phase.

Complete Fermi surface in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ observed via Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation measurements on detwinned single crystals

We show that the Fermi surface (FS) in the antiferromagnetic phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is composed of one hole and two electron pockets, all of which are three dimensional and closed, in sharp contrast to the FS observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Considerations on the carrier compensation and Sommerfeld coefficient rule out existence of unobserved FS pockets of significant sizes. A standard band structure calculation reasonably accounts for the observed FS, despite the overestimated ordered moment. The mass enhancement, the ratio of the effective mass to the band mass, is 2--3.

Cyclotron resonance and mass enhancement by electron correlation in KFe$_2$As$_2$

Cyclotron resonance (CR) measurements for the Fe-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ are performed. One signal for CR is observed, and is attributed to the two-dimensional $α$ Fermi surface at the $Γ$ point. We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4$\pm$0.05)$m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass)] and de-Haas van Alphen (dHvA) results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and dHvA results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$.

Novel Superconducting Phases in Copper Oxides and Iron-oxypnictides: NMR Studies

We reexamine the novel phase diagrams of antiferromagnetism (AFM) and high-Tc$ superconductivity (HTSC) for a disorder-free CuO$_2$ plane based on an evaluation of local hole density ($p$) by site-selective Cu-NMR studies on multilayered copper oxides. Multilayered systems provide us with the opportunity to research the characteristics of the disorder-free CuO$_2$ plane. The site-selective NMR is the best and the only tool used to extract layer-dependent characteristics. Consequently, we have concluded that the uniform mixing of AFM and SC is a general property inherent to a single CuO$_2$ plane in an underdoped regime of HTSC. The $T$=0 phase diagram of AFM constructed here is in quantitative agreement with the theories in a strong correlation regime which is unchanged even with mobile holes. This {\it Mott physics} plays a vital role for mediating the Cooper pairs to make $T_c$ of HTSC very high. By contrast, we address from extensive NMR studies on electron-doped iron-oxypnictides La1111 compounds that the increase in $T_c$ is not due to the development of AFM spin fluctuations, but because the structural parameters, such as the bond angle $α$ of the FeAs$_4$ tetrahedron and the a-axis length, approach each optimum value. Based on these results, we propose that a stronger correlation in HTSC than in FeAs-based superconductors may make $T_c$ higher significantly.

Planar CuO_2 hole density estimation in multilayered high-T_c cuprates

We report that planar CuO_2 hole densities in high-T_c cuprates are consistently determined by the Cu-NMR Knight shift. In single- and bi-layered cuprates, it is demonstrated that the spin part of the Knight shift K_s(300 K) at room temperature monotonically increases with the hole density $p$ from underdoped to overdoped regions, suggesting that the relationship of K_s(300 K) vs. p is a reliable measure to determine p. The validity of this K_s(300 K)-p relationship is confirmed by the investigation of the p-dependencies of hyperfine magnetic fields and of spin susceptibility for single- and bi-layered cuprates with tetragonal symmetry. Moreover, the analyses are compared with the NMR data on three-layered Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_6(F,O)_2, HgBa_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{8+delta}, and five-layered HgBa_2Ca_4Cu_5O_{12+delta}, which suggests the general applicability of the K_s(300 K)-p relationship to multilayered compounds with more than three CuO_2 planes. We remark that the measurement of K_s(300 K) enables us to separately estimate p for each CuO_2 plane in multilayered compounds, where doped hole carriers are inequivalent between outer CuO_2 planes and inner CuO_2 planes.

Possibility of Horizontal Line Node in KFe$_2$As$_2$ Probed by Muon Spin Rotation

The anisotropy and temperature dependence of the magnetic field penetration depth in the iron-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ have been measured down to 20 mK by means of muon spin rotation. We have observed that the flux-line lattice forms triangular symmetry when we applied the field parallel to c-axis, suggesting the interaction between vortices should be isotropic. The temperature dependence of the penetration depth observd with an applied field parallel and perpendicular to c-axis are different. These results can be accounted for by a superconducting gap function with a horizontal line node in the basal plane.

Reply to "Comment on 'Isotope effect in multi-band and multi-channel attractive systems and inverse isotope effect in iron-based superconductors'"

The Comment insists on the following: in our model it is assumed that the effective interactions have specific energy ranges within the single band with a cutoff at ω_1 for the phononic part and a range from ω_1 to ω_2 in the AF channel. Our reply is that we assume that V_i(k,k')\neq 0 if |ξ_k|<ω_i and |ξ_{k'}|<ω_i, and otherwise V_i(k,k')= 0 (i=1,2), as stated in our paper. This is the model of BCS type with two attractive interactions, and this assumption is the characteristic of the BCS approximation. The claim "the integration limits have been modified such that the AF channel mediated pairing sets in where the ph-channel pairing terminates and is limited at an energy given by ω_j=ω_{AF}" in the Comment is wrong. We describe the model and the method to solve the gap equation in more detail.

Structural Analysis on Iron-Based Superconductor Pr1111 System with Oxygen Deficiency and Flourine Substitution

We have performed structural analyses on iron-based superconductors, PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$ and PrFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, systematically, by means of Rietveld method on neutron powder diffraction data. The shifts of iron ion valence from +2, $δ$, are accurately determined from the occupancies of O and O$_{1-x}$F$_x$ sites obtained by the Rietveld analysis and F-concentration obtained by secondary ion-microprobe mass spectrometry. $T_\textrm{c}$-$δ$ curve of PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$ is different from the curve of PrFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, indicating that $δ$ is not a principal parameter for $T_\textrm{c}$ in so-called 1111 system. Structural parameters of the FeAs layers, for example, As-Fe-As bond angle and As-height from Fe layer, are different between both systems with similar $δ$-values. Their parent compounds are also found to have different structural parameters, possibly due to the different synthetic conditions. These results suggest that the difference of structural parameters of FeAs layer is the origin of the discrepancy of $T_\textrm{c}$-$δ$ curves of both systems and the $T_\textrm{c}$-value in the 1111 system is sensitive to the structural parameters. It may be attribute to an energy balance of the conducting bands contributing to the superconductivity.

Structural quantum criticality and superconductivity in iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We investigated the elastic properties of the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with eight Co concentrations. The elastic constant C66 shows large elastic softening associated with the structural phase transition. The C66 was analyzed base on localized and itinerant pictures of Fe-3d electrons, which shows the strong electron-lattice coupling and a possible mass enhancement in this system. The results resemble those of unconventional superconductors, where the properties of the system are governed by the quantum fluctuations associated with the zero-temperature critical point of the long-range order; namely, the quantum critical point (QCP). In this system, the inverse of C66 behaves just like the magnetic susceptibility in the magnetic QCP systems. While the QCPs of these existing superconductors are all ascribed to antiferromagnetism, our systematic studies on the canonical iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 have revealed that there is a signature of "structural quantum criticality" in this material, which is so far without precedent. The elastic constant anomaly is suggested to concern with the emergence of superconductivity. These results highlight the strong electron-lattice coupling and effect of the band in this system, thus challenging the prevailing scenarios that focus on the role of the iron 3d-orbitals.

Absence of an appreciable iron isotope effect on the transition temperature of the optimally doped SmFeAsO_{1-y} superconductor

We report the iron (Fe) isotope effect on the transition temperature (Tc) in the oxygen-deficient SmFeAsO_{1-y}, a 50 K-class Fe-based superconductor. For the optimally-doped samples with Tc = 54 K, change of the Fe average atomic mass (MFe) causes a negligibly small shift in Tc, with the Fe isotope coefficient (alphaFe) as small as -0.024 \pm 0.015. This result contrasts with the finite, inverse isotope shift observed in optimally-doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2, indicating that the contribution of the electron-phonon interaction markedly differs between these two Fe-based high-Tc superconductors.

Comment on "Quantum Criticality and Nodal Superconductivity in the FeAs-Based Superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$"

In a recent Letter [J. K. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 087005 (2010)], Dong \textit{et al}. have observed a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of resistivity $ρ$ in KFe$_2$As$_2$ at the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ = 5 T parallel to the c axis and have suggested the existence of a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $B_{c2}$. In this comment, we argue that observation of a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of $ρ$ in a sample showing broad resistive transitions does not constitute evidence for a QCP and that recent dHvA results do not support the proposed QCP.

Extremely high sensitivity to uniaxial stress in pressure induced superconductivity of BaFe2As2

We have performed electrical resistivity measurements on single crystal BaFe2As2 under high pressure P up to 16 GPa with a cubic anvil apparatus, and up to 3 GPa with a modified Bridgman anvil cell. The samples were obtained from the same batch, which was grown with a self-flux method. A cubic anvil apparatus provides highly hydrostatic pressure, and a modified Bridgman anvil cell, which contains liquid pressure transmitting medium, provides quasi hydrostatic pressure. For highly hydrostatic pressure, the crystal phase and magnetic transition temperature decreases robustly with P and disappears at around 10 GPa. The superconducting phase appears adjacent to magnetic phase in narrow pressure region between 11 and 14 GPa. The tiny difference of hydrostaticity between the cubic anvil apparatus and modified Bridgman anvil cell induces a drastic effect on the phase diagram of BaFe2As2. This result indicates that small uniaxial stress along c-axis strongly suppresses the structural/antiferromagnetic ordering and stabilizes superconductivity at much lower pressure.

Fermi surface and mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$ from de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements

We report on a band structure calculation and de Haas-van Alphen measurements of KFe$_2$As$_2$. Three cylindrical Fermi surfaces are found. Effective masses of electrons range from 6 to 18$m_e$, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. Remarkable discrepancies between the calculated and observed Fermi surface areas and the large mass enhancement ($\gtrsim 3$) highlight the importance of electronic correlations in determining the electronic structures of iron pnicitide superconductors.

No anomalous spin fluctuation in optimally doped and overdoped iron-based oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ probed by muon spin relaxation

Zero field and longitudinal field muon spin relaxation measurements have been performed in optimally doped and overdoped superconductors LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ in order to investigate the magnetic fluctuation over a wide range of temperature and longitudinal field. We have observed no sign of magnetic fluctuation against temperature in the muons' time window (10$^{-5}\sim$ 10$^{-9}$s). Considering the current results and other results, i.e., spin fluctuation observed by neutron scattering, pseudogap-like behaviors by NMR and photoemission spectroscopy, it is suggested that not only the spin fluctuation but also the multiband character with several different orbital contributions at the Fermi surface may play an important role in the superconducting pairing mechanism of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$.

Single Crystal Growth and Characterization of the Iron-Based Superconductor KFe2As2 Synthesized by KAs Flux Method

Centimeter sized platelet single crystals of KFe2As2 were grown using a self-flux method. An encapsulation technique using commercial stainless steel container allowed the stable crystal growth lasting for more than 2 weeks. Ternary K-Fe-As systems with various starting compositions were examined to determine the optimal growth conditions. Employment of KAs flux led to the growth of large single crystals with the typical size of as large as 15 mm x 10 mm x 0.4 mm. The grown crystals exhibit sharp superconducting transition at 3.4 K with the transition width 0.2 K, as well as the very large residual resistivity ratio exceeding 450, evidencing the good sample quality.

Superconductivity at 28.3 and 17.1 K in (Ca4Al2O6-y)(Fe2Pn2) (Pn = As and P)

We have successfully synthesized (Ca4Al2O6-y)(Fe2Pn2) (Pn = As and P) (Al-42622(Pn)) using high-pressure synthesis technique. Al-42622(Pn) exhibit superconductivity for both Pn = As and P with the transition temperatures of 28.3 K and 17.1 K, respectively. The a-lattice parameters of Al-42622(Pn) (a = 3.713 Å and 3.692 Å for Pn = As and P, respectively) are smallest among the iron-pnictide superconductors. Correspondingly, Al-42622(As) has the smallest As-Fe-As bond angle (102.1 °) and the largest As distance from the Fe planes (1.500 Å).

Synthesis of ErFeAsO-based superconductors by hydrogen doping method

Here we demonstrate the technique to stabilize the ErFeAsO-based superconductor with the smallest lattice constants in LnFeAsO1-y (Ln = lanthanide) series using hydrogen doping method. Polycrystalline samples were synthesized by heating pellets with nominal compositions of ErFeAsO1-y (1-y = 0.75 ~ 0.95) sandwiched between pellets of LaFeAsO0.8H0.8 compositions at 1100 °C under a pressure of 5.0 - 5.5 GP. The sample with lattice constants of a = 3.8219 Å and c = 8.2807 Å shows the highest superconducting critical temperatures (Tc) of 44.5 K and 41.0 K determined by onset transitions of resistivity and susceptibility, respectively. We discuss phase diagram of Ln dependence of Tc in LnFeAsO-based superconductors.

Effect of K Doping on Phonons in Ba1-xKxFe2As2

The lattice dynamics of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.00, 0.27) have been studied by inelastic X-ray scattering measurement at room temperature. K doping induces the softening and broadening of phonon modes in the energy range E = 10-15 meV. Analysis with a Born-von Karman force-constant model indicates that the softening results from reduced interatomic force constants around (Ba,K) sites following the displacement of divalent Ba by monovalent K. The phonon broadening may be explained by the local distortions induced by the K substitution. Extra phonon modes are observed around the wave vector q = (0.5,0,0) at E = 16.5 meV for the x = 0.27 sample. These modes may arise either from the local disorder induced by K doping or from electron-phonon coupling.
