Fermi-surface-sheet dependent electron-phonon coupling in a borocarbide superconductor YNi2_2B2_2C

We performed de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements and band-structure calculations for YNi2_2B2_2C. Our improved band structure successfully explained the origins of the large dHvA frequencies ββ and ζζ, which were inexplicable in previous works. By comparing experimental effective masses with band masses, we determined the electron-phonon coupling for each orbit. The results showed a clear Fermi-surface-sheet dependence of the electron-phonon coupling strength, especially highlighting that the coupling for the band-28 sheet is very weak, almost absent for the orbit with B∥cB \parallel c. This finding is consistent with previous observations of dHvA oscillations from this orbit in the mixed state down to very low fields. Amidst growing interest in high-temperature superconductivity driven by electron-phonon coupling in hydrides under high pressure, this study provides foundational data pivotal to precisely understanding electron-phonon coupling.

Anomalous High-Field Magnetotransport in CaFeAsF due to the Quantum Hall Effect

CaFeAsF is an iron-based superconductor parent compound whose Fermi surface is quasi-two dimensional, composed of Dirac-electron and Schrödinger-hole cylinders elongated along the cc axis. We measured the longitudinal and Hall resistivities in CaFeAsF with the electrical current in the abab plane in magnetic fields up to 45 T applied along the cc axis and obtained the corresponding conductivities via tensor inversion. We found that both the longitudinal and Hall conductivities approached zero above ∼\sim40 T as the temperature was lowered to 0.4 K. Our analysis indicates that the Landau-level filling factor is νν = 2 for both electrons and holes at these high field strengths, resulting in a total filling factor νν = νhole−νelectronν_{hole} - ν_{electron} = 0. We therefore argue that the νν = 0 quantum Hall state emerges under these conditions.

Topological frequency shift of quantum oscillation in CaFeAsF

Guo, Alexandradinata, \textit{et al.} have recently proposed that quantum-oscillation frequencies from Dirac/Weyl fermions exhibit a negative shift proportional to T2T^2 because of the energy dependence of the effective mass peculiar to a linear band-dispersion. We have measured Shubnikov--de Haas oscillation in CaFeAsF up to TT = 9 K. The frequency of the αα Dirac electron exhibits a negative shift with increasing TT, while that of the ββ Schrödinger hole does not. For T⩾5T \geqslant 5 K where ββ is negligible, the αα-frequency shift is proportional to T2T^2 and its rate agrees with the theoretical prediction within experimental accuracy. At lower temperatures, the shifts of αα and ββ deviate from theoretical expectations, which we ascribe to the inaccuracy in the frequency determination due to unfavorable interference between frequencies. Our results confirm that the topological frequency shift can be utilized to identify Dirac/Weyl fermions when quantum-oscillation frequencies can be determined accurately.

Elastoresistance measurements on CaKFe4_4As4_4 and KCa2_2Fe4_4As4_4F2_2 with the Fe site of C2vC_{2v} symmetry

We report resistance and elastoresistance measurements on (Ba0.5_{0.5}K0.5_{0.5})Fe2_2As2_2, CaKFe4_4As4_4, and KCa2_2Fe4_4As4_4F2_2. The Fe-site symmetry is D2dD_{2d} in the first compound but C2vC_{2v} in the latter two, which lifts the degeneracy of the Fe dxzd_{xz} and dyzd_{yz} orbitals. The temperature dependence of the resistance and elastoresistance is similar between the three compounds. Especially, the [110] elastoresistance is enhanced with decreasing temperature irrespective of the Fe-site symmetry. This appears to be in conflict with recent Raman scattering studies on CaKFe4_4As4_4, which suggest the absence of nematic fluctuations. We consider possible ways of reconciliation and suggest that the present result is important in elucidating the origin of in-plane resistivity anisotropy in iron-based superconductors.

Real spin and pseudospin topologies in the noncentrosymmetric topological nodal-line semimetal CaAgAs

We present the topology of spin-split Fermi surface of CaAgAs as determined by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements combined with ab initio calculations. We have determined the torus-shaped nodal-line Fermi surface from the dHvA oscillations of ββ and γγ orbits. The former orbit encircles the nodal-line, while the latter does not. Nevertheless, a nontrivial Berry phase is found for both orbits. The nontrivial phase of ββ arises from the orbital characters, which can be expressed as a pseudospin rotating around the nodal-line. On the other hand, the phase of γγ is attributed to the vortex of real spin texture induced by an antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction. Our result demonstrates that both the real- and pseudo-spin textures are indispensable in interpreting the electronic topology in noncentrosymmetric nodal-line semimetals.

Structural phase transitions and superconductivity induced in antiperovskite phosphide CaPd3_3P

In this study, we succeeded in synthesizing new antiperovskite phosphides MMPd3_3P (MM = Ca, Sr, Ba) and discovered the appearance of a superconducting phase (0.17 ≤\leq xx ≤\leq 0.55) in a solid solution (Ca1−x_{1-x}Srx_x)Pd3_3P. Three perovskite-related crystal structures were identified in (Ca1−x_{1-x}Srx_x)Pd3_3P and a phase diagram was built on the basis of experimental results. The first phase transition from centrosymmetric (PnmaPnma) to non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic (AbaAba2) occurred in CaPd3_3P near room temperature. The phase transition temperature decreased as Ca2+^{2+} was replaced with a larger-sized isovalent Sr2+^{2+}. Bulk superconductivity at a critical temperature (TTc_c) of approximately 3.5 K was observed in a range of xx = 0.17 - 0.55; this was associated with the centrosymmetric orthorhombic phase. Thereafter, a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal phase (II41mdmd) remained stable for 0.6 ≤\leq xx ≤\leq 1.0, and superconductivity was significantly suppressed as samples with xx = 0.75 and 1.0 showed (TTc_c) values as low as 0.32 K and 57 mK, respectively. For further substitution with a larger-sized isovalent Ba2+^{2+}, namely (Sr1−y_{1-y}Bay_y)Pd3_3P, the tetragonal phase continued throughout the composition range. BaPd3_3P no longer showed superconductivity down to 20 mK. Since the inversion symmetry of structure and superconductivity can be precisely controlled in (Ca1−x_{1-x}Srx_x)Pd3_3P, this material may offer a unique opportunity to study the relationship between inversion symmetry and superconductivity.

Fermi surface reconstruction in FeSe under high pressure

We report Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation measurements on FeSe under high pressure up to PP = 16.1 kbar. We find a sudden change in SdH oscillations at the onset of the pressure-induced antiferromagnetism at PP ∼\sim 8 kbar. We argue that this change can be attributed to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by the antiferromagnetic order. The negative dTcT_c/dPP observed in a range between PP ∼\sim 8 and 12 kbar may be explained by the reduction in the density of states due to the reconstruction. The ratio of the transition temperature to the effective Fermi energy remains high under high pressure: kBTc/EFk_BT_c/E_F ∼\sim 0.1 even at PP = 16.1 kbar.

Magnetotransport study of the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic phase in FeSe

The resistivity ρρ and Hall resistivity ρHρ_H are measured on FeSe at pressures up to PP = 28.3 kbar in magnetic fields up to BB = 14.5 T. The ρ(B)ρ(B) and ρH(B)ρ_H(B) curves are analyzed with multicarrier models to estimate the carrier density and mobility as a function of PP and temperature (T⩽ T\leqslant 110 K). It is shown that the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition is accompanied by an abrupt reduction of the carrier density and scattering. This indicates that the electronic structure is reconstructed significantly by the antiferromagnetic order.

Upper critical field and quantum oscillations in tetragonal superconducting FeS

The magnetoresistance and magnetic torque of FeS are measured in magnetic fields BB of up to 18 T down to a temperature of 0.03 K. The superconducting transition temperature is found to be TcT_c = 4.1 K, and the anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field Bc2B_{c2} at TcT_c is estimated from the initial slopes to be Γ(Tc)Γ(T_c) = 6.9. Bc2(0)B_{c2}(0) is estimated to be 2.2 and 0.36 T for B∥abB \parallel ab and cc, respectively. Quantum oscillations are observed in both the resistance and torque. Two frequencies FF = 0.15 and 0.20 kT are resolved and assigned to a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface cylinder. The carrier density and Sommerfeld coefficient associated with this cylinder are estimated to be 5.8 ×\times 10−3^{-3} carriers/Fe and 0.48 mJ/(K2^2mol), respectively. Other Fermi surface pockets still remain to be found. Band-structure calculations are performed and compared to the experimental results.

Pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition and phase diagram in FeSe

We report measurements of resistance and ac magnetic susceptibility on FeSe single crystals under high pressure up to 27.2 kbar. The structural phase transition is quickly suppressed with pressure, and the associated anomaly is not seen above ∼\sim18 kbar. The superconducting transition temperature evolves nonmonotonically with pressure, showing a minimum at ∼12\sim12 kbar. We find another anomaly at 21.2 K at 11.6 kbar. This anomaly most likely corresponds to the antiferromagnetic phase transition found in μμSR measurements [M. Bendele \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 087003 (2010)]. The antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition temperatures both increase with pressure up to ∼25\sim25 kbar and then level off. The width of the superconducting transition anomalously broadens in the pressure range where the antiferromagnetism coexists.

Anomalous Fermi surface in FeSe seen by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation measurements

We have observed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in FeSe. The Fermi surface deviates significantly from predictions of band-structure calculations and most likely consists of one electron and one hole thin cylinder. The carrier density is in the order of 0.01 carriers/ Fe, an order-of-magnitude smaller than predicted. Effective Fermi energies as small as 3.6 meV are estimated. These findings call for elaborate theoretical investigations incorporating both electronic correlations and orbital ordering.

Fermi Surface Properties, Metamgnetic Transition and Quantum Phase Transition of CeRu2_2Si2_2 and Its Alloys Probed by the dHvA Effect--Fermi Surface Studies on the Itinerant and Localized Dichotomy of ff Electron Nature

This article describes the Fermi surface properties of CeRu2_2Si2_2 and its alloy systems CeRu2_2(Six_xGe1−x_{1-x})2_2 and Cex_xLa1−x_{1-x}Ru2_2Si2_2 studied by the de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) effect. We pay particular attention to how the Fermi surface properties and the f electron state change with magnetic properties, in particular how they change associated with metamagnetic transition and quantum phase transition. After summarizing the important physical properties of CeRu2_2Si2_2, we present the magnetic phase diagrams of CeRu2_2(Six_xGe1−x_{1-x})2_2 and Cex_xLa1−x_{1-x}Ru2_2Si2_2 as a function of temperature, magnetic field and concentration xx. From the characteristic features of the magnetic phase diagram, we argue that the ferromagnetic interaction in addition to the anitferromagnetic interaction and the Kondo effect is responsible for the magnetic properties and that the metamagnetic transitions in these systems are relevant to the ferromagnetic interaction. We summarize the Fermi surface properties of CeRu2_2Si2_2 in fields below the metamagnetic transition where the f electron state is now well understood theoretically as well as experimentally. We present experimental results in fields above the metamagnetic transitions in CeRu2_2(Six_xGe1−x_{1-x})2_2 and Cex_xLa1−x_{1-x}Ru2_2Si2_2 as well as CeRu2_2Si2_2 to show that the Fermi surface properties above the metamagnetic transitions are significantly different from those below in many important aspects. We argue that the Fermi surface properties above the metamagnetic transitions are not appropriately described in terms of either itinerant or localized f electron. The experimental results in fields below the metamagnetic transitions in CeRu2_2(Six_xGe1−x_{1-x})2_2 and Cex_xLa1−x_{1-x}Ru2_2Si2_2 are presented to discuss the f electron state in the ground state. Superconductivity in 122-type antimonide BaPt2_2Sb2_2

The crystal structure, superconducting properties, and electronic structure of a novel superconducting 122-type antimonide, BaPt2_2Sb2_2, have been investigated by measurements of powder X-ray diffraction patterns, electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility, specific heat as well as ab-initio calculations. This material crystallizes in a new-type of monoclinic variant of the CaBe2_2Ge2_2-type structure, in which Pt2_2Sb2_2 layers consisting of PtSb4_4 tetrahedra and Sb2_2Pt2_2 layers consisting of SbPt4_4 tetrahedra are stacked alternatively and Ba atoms are located between the layers. Measurements of electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility and specific heat revealed that BaPt2_2Sb2_2 is a superconducting material with a TcT_{\rm c} of 1.8 K. The electronic heat capacity coefficient γnγ_{\rm n} and Debye temperature θDθ_{\rm D} were 8.6(2) mJ/mol K2^2 and 146(4) K, where the figures in parentheses represent the standard deviation. The upper critical field μ0Hc2(0)μ_{\rm 0}H_{\rm c2}(0) and the Ginzburg-Landau coherent length ξ(0)ξ(0) were determined to be 0.27 T and 35 nm. Calculations showed that it has two three-dimensional Fermi surfaces (FSs) and two two-dimensional FSs, leading to anisotropic transport properties. The d-states of the Pt atoms in the Pt2Sb2 layers mainly contribute to N(EF)N(E_{\rm F}). A comparison between experimental and calculated results indicates that BaPt2_2Sb2_2 is a superconducting material with moderate coupling.

Two distinct superconducting states in KFe2_2As2_2 under high pressure

We report measurements of ac magnetic susceptibility χacχ_{ac} and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in KFe2_2As2_2 under high pressure up to 24.7 kbar. The pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature TcT_c changes from negative to positive across Pc∼18P_c \sim 18 kbar as previously reported. The ratio of the upper critical field to TcT_c, i.e, Bc2/TcB_{c2} / T_c, is enhanced above PcP_c, and the shape of χacχ_{ac} vs field curves qualitatively changes across PcP_c. DHvA oscillations smoothly evolve across PcP_c and indicate no drastic change in the Fermi surface up to 24.7 kbar. Three dimensionality increases with pressure, while effective masses show decreasing trends. We suggest a crossover from a nodal to a full-gap ss wave as a possible explanation.

Fermi surface in KFe2As2 determined via de Haas-van Alphen oscillation measurements

We have completely determined the Fermi surface in KFe2_2As2_2 via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements. Fundamental frequencies εε, αα, ζζ, and ββ are observed in KFe2_2As2_2. The first one is attributed to a hole cylinder near the X point of the Brillouin zone, while the others to hole cylinders at the ΓΓ point. We also observe magnetic breakdown frequencies between αα and ζζ and suggest a plausible explanation for them. The experimental frequencies show deviations from frequencies predicted by band structure calculations. Large effective masses up to 19 mem_e for B∥cB \parallel c have been found, mem_e being the free electron mass. The carrier number and Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat are estimated to be 1.01 -- 1.03 holes per formula unit and 82 -- 94 mJmol−1^{-1}K−2^{-2}, respectively, which are consistent with the chemical stoichiometry and a direct measure of 93 mJmol−1^{-1}K−2^{-2} [H. Fukazawa \textit{et al}., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{80SA}, SA118 (2011)]. The Sommerfeld coefficient is about 9 times enhanced over a band value, suggesting the importance of low-energy spin and/or orbital fluctuations, and places KFe2_2As2_2 among strongly correlated metals. We have also performed dHvA measurements on Ba0.07_{0.07}K0.93_{0.93}Fe2_2As2_2 and have observed the αα and ββ frequencies.

Hysteretic superconducting resistive transition in Ba0.07K0.93Fe2As2

We have observed hysteresis in superconducting resistive transition curves of Ba0.07_{0.07}K0.93_{0.93}Fe2_2As2_2 (Tc∼T_c\sim8 K) below about 1 K for in-plane fields. The hysteresis is not observed as the field is tilted away from the abab plane by 20∘^{\circ} or more. The temperature and angle dependences of the upper critical field indicate a strong paramagnetic effect for in-plane fields. We suggest that the hysteresis can be attributed to a first-order superconducting transition due to the paramagnetic effect. Magnetic torque data are also shown.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in EuFe2As2 without a quantum critical point: magnetotransport and upper critical field measurements under high pressure

Resistivity and Hall effect measurements of EuFe2_2As2_2 up to 3.2\,GPa indicate no divergence of quasiparticle effective mass at the pressure PcP_\mathrm{c} where the magnetic and structural transition disappears. This is corroborated by analysis of the temperature (TT) dependence of the upper critical field. TT-linear resistivity is observed at pressures slightly above PcP_\mathrm{c}. The scattering rates for both electrons and holes are shown to be approximately TT-linear. When a field is applied, a T2T^2 dependence is recovered, indicating that the origin of the TT-linear dependence is spin fluctuations.

Large and homogeneous mass enhancement in the rattling-induced superconductor KOs2_2O6_6

We have determined the Fermi surface in KOs2_2O6_6 (TcT_c = 9.6 K and Bc2∼B_{c2} \sim 32 T) via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements and a band structure calculation. We find effective masses up to 26(1) mem_e (mem_e is the free electron mass), which are unusually heavy for compounds where the mass enhancement is mostly due to electron-phonon interactions. Orbit-resolved mass enhancement parameters λdHvAλ_{dHvA} are large but fairly homogeneous, concentrated in the range 5 -- 8. We discuss origins of the large homogeneous mass enhancement in terms of rattling motion of the K ions.

Complete Fermi surface in BaFe2_2As2_2 observed via Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation measurements on detwinned single crystals

We show that the Fermi surface (FS) in the antiferromagnetic phase of BaFe2_2As2_2 is composed of one hole and two electron pockets, all of which are three dimensional and closed, in sharp contrast to the FS observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Considerations on the carrier compensation and Sommerfeld coefficient rule out existence of unobserved FS pockets of significant sizes. A standard band structure calculation reasonably accounts for the observed FS, despite the overestimated ordered moment. The mass enhancement, the ratio of the effective mass to the band mass, is 2--3.

Cyclotron resonance and mass enhancement by electron correlation in KFe2_2As2_2

Cyclotron resonance (CR) measurements for the Fe-based superconductor KFe2_2As2_2 are performed. One signal for CR is observed, and is attributed to the two-dimensional αα Fermi surface at the ΓΓ point. We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4±\pm0.05)mem_e (mem_e is the free electron mass)] and de-Haas van Alphen (dHvA) results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and dHvA results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe2_2As2_2.

Phase Diagram of Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in EuFe2As2 Probed by High-Pressure Resistivity up to 3.2 GPa

We have constructed a pressure−-temperature (P−TP-T) phase diagram of PP-induced superconductivity in EuFe2_2As2_2 single crystals, via resistivity (ρρ) measurements up to 3.2 GPa. As hydrostatic pressure is applied, an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition attributed to the FeAs layers at T0T_\mathrm{0} shifts to lower temperatures, and the corresponding resistive anomaly becomes undetectable for PP ≥\ge 2.5 GPa. This suggests that the critical pressure PcP_\mathrm{c} where T0T_\mathrm{0} becomes zero is about 2.5 GPa. We have found that the AF order of the Eu2+^{2+} moments survives up to 3.2 GPa without significant changes in the AF ordering temperature TNT_\mathrm{N}. The superconducting (SC) ground state with a sharp transition to zero resistivity at TcT_\mathrm{c} ∼\sim 30 K, indicative of bulk superconductivity, emerges in a pressure range from PcP_\mathrm{c} ∼\sim 2.5 GPa to ∼\sim 3.0 GPa. At pressures close to but outside the SC phase, the ρ(T)ρ(T) curve shows a partial SC transition (i.e., zero resistivity is not attained) followed by a reentrant-like hump at approximately TNT_\mathrm{N} with decreasing temperature. When nonhydrostatic pressure with a uniaxial-like strain component is applied using a solid pressure medium, the partial superconductivity is continuously observed in a wide pressure range from 1.1 GPa to 3.2 GPa.

Upper Critical Field of Pressure-Induced Superconductor EuFe2_2As2_2

We have carried out high-field resistivity measurements up to 27\,T in EuFe2_2As2_2 at PP\,=\,2.5\,GPa, a virtually optimal pressure for the PP-induced superconductivity, where TcT_\mathrm{c}\,=\,30\,K. The Bc2−TcB_\mathrm{c2}-T_\mathrm{c} phase diagram has been constructed in a wide temperature range with a minimum temperature of 1.6 K (≈0.05×Tc\approx 0.05 \times T_\mathrm{c}), for both B∥abB \parallel ab (Bc2abB_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{ab}) and B∥cB \parallel c (Bc2cB_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{c}). The upper critical fields Bc2abB_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{ab}(0) and Bc2cB_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{c}(0), determined by the onset of resistive transitions, are 25 T and 22 T, respectively, which are significantly smaller than those of other Fe-based superconductors with similar values of TcT_\mathrm{c}. The small Bc2(0)B_\mathrm{c2}(0) values and the Bc2(T)B_\mathrm{c2}(T) curves with positive curvature around 20 K can be explained by a multiple pair-breaking model that includes the exchange field due to the magnetic Eu2+^{2+} moments. The anisotropy parameter, Γ=Bc2ab/Bc2cΓ=B_\mathrm{c2}^{ab}/B_\mathrm{c2}^{c}, in EuFe2_2As2_2 at low temperatures is comparable to that of other "122" Fe-based systems.

Comment on "Quantum Criticality and Nodal Superconductivity in the FeAs-Based Superconductor KFe2_2As2_2"

In a recent Letter [J. K. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 087005 (2010)], Dong \textit{et al}. have observed a T1.5T^{1.5} dependence of resistivity ρρ in KFe2_2As2_2 at the upper critical field Bc2B_{c2} = 5 T parallel to the c axis and have suggested the existence of a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at Bc2B_{c2}. In this comment, we argue that observation of a T1.5T^{1.5} dependence of ρρ in a sample showing broad resistive transitions does not constitute evidence for a QCP and that recent dHvA results do not support the proposed QCP.

Effective masses of electrons range from 6 to 18mem_e, mem_e being the free electron mass. Magnetotransport studies of EuFe2_2As2_2: the influence of the Eu2+^{2+} magnetic moments

We report resistivity ρρ and Hall effect measurements on EuFe2_2As2_2 at ambient pressure and 28 kbar and magnetization measurements at ambient pressure. We analyze the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of ρρ and the Hall effect using a molecular-field theory for magnetoresistance and an empirical formula for the anomalous Hall effect and find that electron scattering due to the Eu2+^{2+} local moments plays only a minor role in determining electronic transport properties of EuFe2_2As2_2.

Upper critical field and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in KOs2_2O6_6 measured in a hybrid magnet

Magnetic torque measurements have been performed on a KOs2_2O6_6 single crystal in magnetic fields up to 35.3 T and at temperatures down to 0.6 K. The upper critical field is determined to be ∼\sim30 T. De Haas-van Alphen oscillations are observed. A large mass enhancement of (1+λλ) = m∗/mbandm^* / m_{band} = 7.6 is found. It is suggested that, for the large upper critical field to be reconciled with Pauli paramagnetic limiting, the observed mass enhancement must be of electron-phonon origin for the most part.

Pressure-Induced Antiferromagnetic Bulk Superconductor EuFe2_2As2_2

We present the magnetic and superconducting phase diagram of EuFe2_2As2_2 for B∥cB \parallel c and B∥abB \parallel ab. The antiferromagnetic phase of the Eu2+^{2+} moments is completely enclosed in the superconducting phase. The upper critical field vs. temperature curves exhibit strong concave curvatures, which can be explained by the Jaccarino-Peter compensation effect due to the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the Eu2+^{2+} moments and conduction electrons.
