Anomalous High-Field Magnetotransport in CaFeAsF due to the Quantum Hall Effect

CaFeAsF is an iron-based superconductor parent compound whose Fermi surface is quasi-two dimensional, composed of Dirac-electron and Schrödinger-hole cylinders elongated along the $c$ axis. We measured the longitudinal and Hall resistivities in CaFeAsF with the electrical current in the $ab$ plane in magnetic fields up to 45 T applied along the $c$ axis and obtained the corresponding conductivities via tensor inversion. We found that both the longitudinal and Hall conductivities approached zero above $\sim$40 T as the temperature was lowered to 0.4 K. Our analysis indicates that the Landau-level filling factor is $ν$ = 2 for both electrons and holes at these high field strengths, resulting in a total filling factor $ν$ = $ν_{hole} - ν_{electron}$ = 0. We therefore argue that the $ν$ = 0 quantum Hall state emerges under these conditions.

Charge and spin interplay in a molecular-dimer-based organic Mott insulator

Triangular lattice quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulators based on BEDT-TTF molecule and its analogies present a possibility to produce exotic phases by coupling charge and spin degrees of freedom. In this work we discuss magnetic properties of one of such materials, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl, which is found at the border of the phase transition between a Mott insulator into a charge ordered state. Our magnetic susceptibility and cantilever magnetisation measurements demonstrate how the charge degree of freedom defines magnetic properties for few different charge phases observed in this material as a function of temperature. Between $T_{CO}=30~K$ and $T_S=24~K$ we observe charge and spin separation due to one-dimensional charge stripes formed in this material below $T_{CO}=30~K$. Below $T_S=24~K$ charge and spin degrees of freedom demonstrate coupling. Spin singlet correlations develop below 24~K, however melting of charge order below 15~K prevents the spin singlet state formation, leaving the system in the inhomogeneous state with charge ordered spin singlet domains and charge and spin fluctuating ones.

Topological frequency shift of quantum oscillation in CaFeAsF

Guo, Alexandradinata, \textit{et al.} have recently proposed that quantum-oscillation frequencies from Dirac/Weyl fermions exhibit a negative shift proportional to $T^2$ because of the energy dependence of the effective mass peculiar to a linear band-dispersion. We have measured Shubnikov--de Haas oscillation in CaFeAsF up to $T$ = 9 K. The frequency of the $α$ Dirac electron exhibits a negative shift with increasing $T$, while that of the $β$ Schrödinger hole does not. For $T \geqslant 5$ K where $β$ is negligible, the $α$-frequency shift is proportional to $T^2$ and its rate agrees with the theoretical prediction within experimental accuracy. At lower temperatures, the shifts of $α$ and $β$ deviate from theoretical expectations, which we ascribe to the inaccuracy in the frequency determination due to unfavorable interference between frequencies. Our results confirm that the topological frequency shift can be utilized to identify Dirac/Weyl fermions when quantum-oscillation frequencies can be determined accurately.

Elastoresistance measurements on CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ and KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with the Fe site of $C_{2v}$ symmetry

We report resistance and elastoresistance measurements on (Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, and KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$. The Fe-site symmetry is $D_{2d}$ in the first compound but $C_{2v}$ in the latter two, which lifts the degeneracy of the Fe $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. The temperature dependence of the resistance and elastoresistance is similar between the three compounds. Especially, the [110] elastoresistance is enhanced with decreasing temperature irrespective of the Fe-site symmetry. This appears to be in conflict with recent Raman scattering studies on CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, which suggest the absence of nematic fluctuations. We consider possible ways of reconciliation and suggest that the present result is important in elucidating the origin of in-plane resistivity anisotropy in iron-based superconductors.

Real spin and pseudospin topologies in the noncentrosymmetric topological nodal-line semimetal CaAgAs

We present the topology of spin-split Fermi surface of CaAgAs as determined by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements combined with ab initio calculations. We have determined the torus-shaped nodal-line Fermi surface from the dHvA oscillations of $β$ and $γ$ orbits. The former orbit encircles the nodal-line, while the latter does not. Nevertheless, a nontrivial Berry phase is found for both orbits. The nontrivial phase of $β$ arises from the orbital characters, which can be expressed as a pseudospin rotating around the nodal-line. On the other hand, the phase of $γ$ is attributed to the vortex of real spin texture induced by an antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction. Our result demonstrates that both the real- and pseudo-spin textures are indispensable in interpreting the electronic topology in noncentrosymmetric nodal-line semimetals.

Anisotropic magnetoresistance of charge-density wave in $o$-TaS$_3$

We report the magnetoresistance of a charge-density wave (CDW) in $o$-TaS$_3$ whiskers at 4.2 K under a magnetic field up to 5.2 T. An anisotropic negative magnetoresistance is found in the nonlinear regime of current-voltage characteristics. The angle dependence of the magnetoresistance, studied by rotating the magnetic field upon the $c$-axis, exhibited a two-fold symmetry. The magnetoresistance amplitude exhibits maxima when the field is parallel to the $a$-axis, whereas it vanishes to the $b$-axis. The observed anisotropy may come from difference in interchain coupling of adjacent CDWs along the $a$- and $b$-axes. Comparison of the anisotropy to the scanning tunneling microscope image of CDWs allows us to provide a simple picture to explain the magnetoresistance in terms of delocalization of quantum interference of CDWs extending over the $b$-$c$ plane.

Fermi surface reconstruction in FeSe under high pressure

We report Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation measurements on FeSe under high pressure up to $P$ = 16.1 kbar. We find a sudden change in SdH oscillations at the onset of the pressure-induced antiferromagnetism at $P$ $\sim$ 8 kbar. We argue that this change can be attributed to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by the antiferromagnetic order. The negative d$T_c$/d$P$ observed in a range between $P$ $\sim$ 8 and 12 kbar may be explained by the reduction in the density of states due to the reconstruction. The ratio of the transition temperature to the effective Fermi energy remains high under high pressure: $k_BT_c/E_F$ $\sim$ 0.1 even at $P$ = 16.1 kbar.

Magnetotransport study of the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic phase in FeSe

The resistivity $ρ$ and Hall resistivity $ρ_H$ are measured on FeSe at pressures up to $P$ = 28.3 kbar in magnetic fields up to $B$ = 14.5 T. The $ρ(B)$ and $ρ_H(B)$ curves are analyzed with multicarrier models to estimate the carrier density and mobility as a function of $P$ and temperature ($ T\leqslant$ 110 K). It is shown that the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition is accompanied by an abrupt reduction of the carrier density and scattering. This indicates that the electronic structure is reconstructed significantly by the antiferromagnetic order.

Upper critical field and quantum oscillations in tetragonal superconducting FeS

The magnetoresistance and magnetic torque of FeS are measured in magnetic fields $B$ of up to 18 T down to a temperature of 0.03 K. The superconducting transition temperature is found to be $T_c$ = 4.1 K, and the anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ at $T_c$ is estimated from the initial slopes to be $Γ(T_c)$ = 6.9. $B_{c2}(0)$ is estimated to be 2.2 and 0.36 T for $B \parallel ab$ and $c$, respectively. Quantum oscillations are observed in both the resistance and torque. Two frequencies $F$ = 0.15 and 0.20 kT are resolved and assigned to a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface cylinder. The carrier density and Sommerfeld coefficient associated with this cylinder are estimated to be 5.8 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ carriers/Fe and 0.48 mJ/(K$^2$mol), respectively. Other Fermi surface pockets still remain to be found. Band-structure calculations are performed and compared to the experimental results.

Pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition and phase diagram in FeSe

We report measurements of resistance and ac magnetic susceptibility on FeSe single crystals under high pressure up to 27.2 kbar. The structural phase transition is quickly suppressed with pressure, and the associated anomaly is not seen above $\sim$18 kbar. The superconducting transition temperature evolves nonmonotonically with pressure, showing a minimum at $\sim12$ kbar. We find another anomaly at 21.2 K at 11.6 kbar. This anomaly most likely corresponds to the antiferromagnetic phase transition found in $μ$SR measurements [M. Bendele \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 087003 (2010)]. The antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition temperatures both increase with pressure up to $\sim25$ kbar and then level off. The width of the superconducting transition anomalously broadens in the pressure range where the antiferromagnetism coexists.

Anomalous Fermi surface in FeSe seen by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation measurements

We have observed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in FeSe. The Fermi surface deviates significantly from predictions of band-structure calculations and most likely consists of one electron and one hole thin cylinder. The carrier density is in the order of 0.01 carriers/ Fe, an order-of-magnitude smaller than predicted. Effective Fermi energies as small as 3.6 meV are estimated. These findings call for elaborate theoretical investigations incorporating both electronic correlations and orbital ordering.

Superconductivity in 122-type antimonide BaPt$_2$Sb$_2$

The crystal structure, superconducting properties, and electronic structure of a novel superconducting 122-type antimonide, BaPt$_2$Sb$_2$, have been investigated by measurements of powder X-ray diffraction patterns, electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility, specific heat as well as ab-initio calculations. This material crystallizes in a new-type of monoclinic variant of the CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type structure, in which Pt$_2$Sb$_2$ layers consisting of PtSb$_4$ tetrahedra and Sb$_2$Pt$_2$ layers consisting of SbPt$_4$ tetrahedra are stacked alternatively and Ba atoms are located between the layers. Measurements of electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility and specific heat revealed that BaPt$_2$Sb$_2$ is a superconducting material with a $T_{\rm c}$ of 1.8 K. The electronic heat capacity coefficient $γ_{\rm n}$ and Debye temperature $θ_{\rm D}$ were 8.6(2) mJ/mol K$^2$ and 146(4) K, where the figures in parentheses represent the standard deviation. The upper critical field $μ_{\rm 0}H_{\rm c2}(0)$ and the Ginzburg-Landau coherent length $ξ(0)$ were determined to be 0.27 T and 35 nm. Calculations showed that it has two three-dimensional Fermi surfaces (FSs) and two two-dimensional FSs, leading to anisotropic transport properties. The d-states of the Pt atoms in the Pt2Sb2 layers mainly contribute to $N(E_{\rm F})$. A comparison between experimental and calculated results indicates that BaPt$_2$Sb$_2$ is a superconducting material with moderate coupling.

Two distinct superconducting states in KFe$_2$As$_2$ under high pressure

We report measurements of ac magnetic susceptibility $χ_{ac}$ and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in KFe$_2$As$_2$ under high pressure up to 24.7 kbar. The pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ changes from negative to positive across $P_c \sim 18$ kbar as previously reported. The ratio of the upper critical field to $T_c$, i.e, $B_{c2} / T_c$, is enhanced above $P_c$, and the shape of $χ_{ac}$ vs field curves qualitatively changes across $P_c$. DHvA oscillations smoothly evolve across $P_c$ and indicate no drastic change in the Fermi surface up to 24.7 kbar. Three dimensionality increases with pressure, while effective masses show decreasing trends. We suggest a crossover from a nodal to a full-gap $s$ wave as a possible explanation.

Fermi surface in KFe2As2 determined via de Haas-van Alphen oscillation measurements

We have completely determined the Fermi surface in KFe$_2$As$_2$ via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements. Fundamental frequencies $ε$, $α$, $ζ$, and $β$ are observed in KFe$_2$As$_2$. The first one is attributed to a hole cylinder near the X point of the Brillouin zone, while the others to hole cylinders at the $Γ$ point. We also observe magnetic breakdown frequencies between $α$ and $ζ$ and suggest a plausible explanation for them. The experimental frequencies show deviations from frequencies predicted by band structure calculations. Large effective masses up to 19 $m_e$ for $B \parallel c$ have been found, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. The carrier number and Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat are estimated to be 1.01 -- 1.03 holes per formula unit and 82 -- 94 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$, respectively, which are consistent with the chemical stoichiometry and a direct measure of 93 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ [H. Fukazawa \textit{et al}., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{80SA}, SA118 (2011)]. The Sommerfeld coefficient is about 9 times enhanced over a band value, suggesting the importance of low-energy spin and/or orbital fluctuations, and places KFe$_2$As$_2$ among strongly correlated metals. We have also performed dHvA measurements on Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and have observed the $α$ and $β$ frequencies.

Hysteretic superconducting resistive transition in Ba0.07K0.93Fe2As2

We have observed hysteresis in superconducting resistive transition curves of Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c\sim$8 K) below about 1 K for in-plane fields. The hysteresis is not observed as the field is tilted away from the $ab$ plane by 20$^{\circ}$ or more. The temperature and angle dependences of the upper critical field indicate a strong paramagnetic effect for in-plane fields. We suggest that the hysteresis can be attributed to a first-order superconducting transition due to the paramagnetic effect. Magnetic torque data are also shown.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in EuFe2As2 without a quantum critical point: magnetotransport and upper critical field measurements under high pressure

Resistivity and Hall effect measurements of EuFe$_2$As$_2$ up to 3.2\,GPa indicate no divergence of quasiparticle effective mass at the pressure $P_\mathrm{c}$ where the magnetic and structural transition disappears. This is corroborated by analysis of the temperature ($T$) dependence of the upper critical field. $T$-linear resistivity is observed at pressures slightly above $P_\mathrm{c}$. The scattering rates for both electrons and holes are shown to be approximately $T$-linear. When a field is applied, a $T^2$ dependence is recovered, indicating that the origin of the $T$-linear dependence is spin fluctuations.

Large and homogeneous mass enhancement in the rattling-induced superconductor KOs$_2$O$_6$

We have determined the Fermi surface in KOs$_2$O$_6$ ($T_c$ = 9.6 K and $B_{c2} \sim$ 32 T) via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements and a band structure calculation. We find effective masses up to 26(1) $m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass), which are unusually heavy for compounds where the mass enhancement is mostly due to electron-phonon interactions. Orbit-resolved mass enhancement parameters $λ_{dHvA}$ are large but fairly homogeneous, concentrated in the range 5 -- 8. We discuss origins of the large homogeneous mass enhancement in terms of rattling motion of the K ions.

preprint2011arXiv

Complete Fermi surface in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ observed via Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation measurements on detwinned single crystals

We show that the Fermi surface (FS) in the antiferromagnetic phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is composed of one hole and two electron pockets, all of which are three dimensional and closed, in sharp contrast to the FS observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Considerations on the carrier compensation and Sommerfeld coefficient rule out existence of unobserved FS pockets of significant sizes. A standard band structure calculation reasonably accounts for the observed FS, despite the overestimated ordered moment. The mass enhancement, the ratio of the effective mass to the band mass, is 2--3.

Cyclotron resonance and mass enhancement by electron correlation in KFe$_2$As$_2$

Cyclotron resonance (CR) measurements for the Fe-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ are performed. One signal for CR is observed, and is attributed to the two-dimensional $α$ Fermi surface at the $Γ$ point. We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4$\pm$0.05)$m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass)] and de-Haas van Alphen (dHvA) results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and dHvA results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$.

Phase Diagram of Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in EuFe2As2 Probed by High-Pressure Resistivity up to 3.2 GPa

We have constructed a pressure$-$temperature ($P-T$) phase diagram of $P$-induced superconductivity in EuFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals, via resistivity ($ρ$) measurements up to 3.2 GPa. As hydrostatic pressure is applied, an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition attributed to the FeAs layers at $T_\mathrm{0}$ shifts to lower temperatures, and the corresponding resistive anomaly becomes undetectable for $P$ $\ge$ 2.5 GPa. This suggests that the critical pressure $P_\mathrm{c}$ where $T_\mathrm{0}$ becomes zero is about 2.5 GPa. We have found that the AF order of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments survives up to 3.2 GPa without significant changes in the AF ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$. The superconducting (SC) ground state with a sharp transition to zero resistivity at $T_\mathrm{c}$ $\sim$ 30 K, indicative of bulk superconductivity, emerges in a pressure range from $P_\mathrm{c}$ $\sim$ 2.5 GPa to $\sim$ 3.0 GPa. At pressures close to but outside the SC phase, the $ρ(T)$ curve shows a partial SC transition (i.e., zero resistivity is not attained) followed by a reentrant-like hump at approximately $T_\mathrm{N}$ with decreasing temperature. When nonhydrostatic pressure with a uniaxial-like strain component is applied using a solid pressure medium, the partial superconductivity is continuously observed in a wide pressure range from 1.1 GPa to 3.2 GPa.

Upper Critical Field of Pressure-Induced Superconductor EuFe$_2$As$_2$

We have carried out high-field resistivity measurements up to 27\,T in EuFe$_2$As$_2$ at $P$\,=\,2.5\,GPa, a virtually optimal pressure for the $P$-induced superconductivity, where $T_\mathrm{c}$\,=\,30\,K. The $B_\mathrm{c2}-T_\mathrm{c}$ phase diagram has been constructed in a wide temperature range with a minimum temperature of 1.6 K ($\approx 0.05 \times T_\mathrm{c}$), for both $B \parallel ab$ ($B_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{ab}$) and $B \parallel c$ ($B_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{c}$). The upper critical fields $B_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{ab}$(0) and $B_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{c}$(0), determined by the onset of resistive transitions, are 25 T and 22 T, respectively, which are significantly smaller than those of other Fe-based superconductors with similar values of $T_\mathrm{c}$. The small $B_\mathrm{c2}(0)$ values and the $B_\mathrm{c2}(T)$ curves with positive curvature around 20 K can be explained by a multiple pair-breaking model that includes the exchange field due to the magnetic Eu$^{2+}$ moments. The anisotropy parameter, $Γ=B_\mathrm{c2}^{ab}/B_\mathrm{c2}^{c}$, in EuFe$_2$As$_2$ at low temperatures is comparable to that of other "122" Fe-based systems.

Comment on "Quantum Criticality and Nodal Superconductivity in the FeAs-Based Superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$"

In a recent Letter [J. K. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 087005 (2010)], Dong \textit{et al}. have observed a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of resistivity $ρ$ in KFe$_2$As$_2$ at the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ = 5 T parallel to the c axis and have suggested the existence of a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $B_{c2}$. In this comment, we argue that observation of a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of $ρ$ in a sample showing broad resistive transitions does not constitute evidence for a QCP and that recent dHvA results do not support the proposed QCP.

Fermi surface and mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$ from de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements

We report on a band structure calculation and de Haas-van Alphen measurements of KFe$_2$As$_2$. Three cylindrical Fermi surfaces are found. Effective masses of electrons range from 6 to 18$m_e$, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. Remarkable discrepancies between the calculated and observed Fermi surface areas and the large mass enhancement ($\gtrsim 3$) highlight the importance of electronic correlations in determining the electronic structures of iron pnicitide superconductors.

Magnetotransport studies of EuFe$_2$As$_2$: the influence of the Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic moments

We report resistivity $ρ$ and Hall effect measurements on EuFe$_2$As$_2$ at ambient pressure and 28 kbar and magnetization measurements at ambient pressure. We analyze the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of $ρ$ and the Hall effect using a molecular-field theory for magnetoresistance and an empirical formula for the anomalous Hall effect and find that electron scattering due to the Eu$^{2+}$ local moments plays only a minor role in determining electronic transport properties of EuFe$_2$As$_2$.

Upper critical field and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in KOs$_2$O$_6$ measured in a hybrid magnet

Magnetic torque measurements have been performed on a KOs$_2$O$_6$ single crystal in magnetic fields up to 35.3 T and at temperatures down to 0.6 K. The upper critical field is determined to be $\sim$30 T. De Haas-van Alphen oscillations are observed. A large mass enhancement of (1+$λ$) = $m^* / m_{band}$ = 7.6 is found. It is suggested that, for the large upper critical field to be reconciled with Pauli paramagnetic limiting, the observed mass enhancement must be of electron-phonon origin for the most part.

Pressure-Induced Antiferromagnetic Bulk Superconductor EuFe$_2$As$_2$

We present the magnetic and superconducting phase diagram of EuFe$_2$As$_2$ for $B \parallel c$ and $B \parallel ab$. The antiferromagnetic phase of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments is completely enclosed in the superconducting phase. The upper critical field vs. temperature curves exhibit strong concave curvatures, which can be explained by the Jaccarino-Peter compensation effect due to the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ moments and conduction electrons.
