Magnetic order and spin liquid behavior in [Mo3+]^{11+} triangular magnets

Molecular magnets based on [Mo$_3$]$^{11+}$ units with one unpaired electron per trimer have attracted recent interest due to the identification of quantum spin liquid candidacy in some family members. Here, we present comprehensive measurements on polycrystalline samples of ZnScMo$_3$O$_8$, MgScMo$_3$O$_8$, and Na$_3$Sc$_2$Mo$_5$O$_{16}$ with the same Mo$_3$O$_{13}$ magnetic building blocks. The crystal structures are characterized with x-ray or neutron powder diffraction and the magnetic ground states are determined by performing ac and dc susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction, and $μ$SR measurements. Our work indicates that ZnScMo$_3$O$_8$ and MgScMo$_3$O$_8$ have ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperatures of 18.5 K and 11.9 K, ordered ground states with net moments (low-moment ferromagnetism or canted antiferromagnetism), and zero field ordering temperatures of $T_c =$ 6 K and $<$ 2 K respectively. On the other hand, Na$_3$Sc$_2$Mo$_5$O$_{16}$ hosts a dynamical magnetic ground state with no evidence for magnetic ordering or spin freezing down to 20 mK despite an antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of -36.2 K, and therefore is a candidate for quantum spin liquid behavior. By comparing the present results to past work on the same family of materials, we construct a phase diagram which illustrates that the magnetic ground states of these Mo-based molecular magnets are very sensitive to small changes in the nearest neighbor Mo-Mo distance.

Low Temperature Domain Wall Freezing and Non-Equilibrium Dynamics in the Transverse-Field Ising Model Material CoNb$_2$O$_6$

CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is a rare realization of the transverse field Ising model (TFIM), making it a useful tool for studying both equilibrium and non-equilibrium many-body quantum physics. Despite a large body of work dedicated to characterizing this material, details of the ordered states in the presence of relatively weak transverse fields have not been discussed in detail. Here, we present a detailed study of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ via ac susceptibility measurements in order to further characterize its low temperature behavior in the presence of a transverse field. Specifically, we call attention to an unconventional freezing transition in zero-field below T$_F$ = 1.2~K, occurring \emph{within} the well-known commensurate antiferromagnetic (CAFM) state that onsets at $T_{N2}$ = 1.9~K. We performed a series of transverse-field quenches into this frozen state, which resulted in a slowly relaxing susceptibility, $χ^{\prime}(t)$, that followed a logarithmic decay within the time range measured. We discuss the frozen state in the context of the freezing of previously discussed "free" chains arising from domain walls between the four degenerate sublattices of the CAFM state. We also attempted to observe Kibble-Zurek scaling by quenching the transverse field into the frozen state at different rates. This produced a null result; the behavior can be fully explained by coarsening of domains over the timescale of the quenches. The absence of a clear Kibble-Zurek scaling is itself surprising, given the proposed ubiquity of the phenomenon for general second order phase transitions.

Absence of long-range order in an $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$

Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.37 K, which is primarily ascribed to the inherent structural disorder. A cluster spin-glass state is proposed in view of the frequency dependence of the peak position in the ac susceptibility. In addition, the temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity indicates rather strong spin fluctuations which is probably due to the phase competition.

Extremely well isolated 2D spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg layers with small exchange coupling in the molecular-based magnet CuPOF

We report on a comprehensive characterization of the newly synthesized Cu$^{2+}$-based molecular magnet [Cu(pz)$_2$(2-HOpy)$_2$](PF$_6$)$_2$ (CuPOF), where pz = C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$ and 2-HOpy = C$_5$H$_4$NHO. From a comparison of theoretical modeling to results of bulk magnetometry, specific heat, $μ^+$SR, ESR, and NMR spectroscopy, this material is determined as an excellent realization of the 2D square-lattice $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a moderate intraplane nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of $J/k_\mathrm{B} = 6.80(5)$ K, and an extremely small interlayer interaction of about 1 mK. At zero field, the bulk magnetometry reveals a temperature-driven crossover of spin correlations from isotropic to $XY$ type, caused by the presence of a weak intrinsic easy-plane anisotropy. A transition to long-range order, driven by the low-temperature $XY$ anisotropy under the influence of the interlayer coupling, occurs at $T_\mathrm{N} = 1.38(2)$ K, as revealed by $μ^+$SR. In applied magnetic fields, our $^1$H-NMR data reveal a strong increase of the magnetic anisotropy, manifested by a pronounced enhancement of the transition temperature to commensurate long-range order at $T_\mathrm{N} =2.8$ K and 7 T.

Observation of the in-plane magnetic field-induced phase transitions in FeSe

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of FeSe under the in-plane magnetic fields using torque magnetometry, specific heat, magnetocaloric measurements. Below the upper critical field Hc2, we observed the field-induced anomalies at H1 ~ 15 T and H2 ~ 22 T near H//ab and below a characteristic temperature T* ~ 2 K. The transition magnetic fields H1 and H2 exhibit negligible dependence on both temperature and field orientation. This contrasts with the strong temperature and angle dependence of Hc2, suggesting that these anomalies are attributed to the field-induced phase transitions, originating from the inherent spin-density-wave instability of quasiparticles near the superconducting gap minima or possible Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the highly spin-polarized Fermi surfaces. Our observations imply that FeSe, an atypical multiband superconductor with extremely small Fermi energies, represents a unique model system for stabilizing unusual superconducting orders beyond the Pauli limit.

Possible itinerant excitations and quantum spin state transitions in the effective spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$

The most fascinating feature of certain two-dimensional (2D) gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) is that their spinon excitations behave like the fermionic carriers of a paramagnetic metal. The spinon Fermi surface is then expected to produce a linear increase of the thermal conductivity with temperature that should manifest via a residual value ($κ_0/T$) in the zero-temperature limit. However, this linear in T behavior has been reported for very few QSL candidates. Here, we studied the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity of an effective spin-1/2 triangular QSL candidate Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, which has an antiferromagnetic order at very low temperature ($T_N \sim$ 148 mK), and observed a finite $κ_0/T$ extrapolated from the data above $T_N$. Moreover, while approaching zero temperature, it exhibits series of quantum spin state transitions with applied field along the $c$ axis. These observations indicate that Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ possibly behaves as a gapless QSL with itinerant spin excitations above $T_N$ and its strong quantum spin fluctuations persist below $T_N$.

Canted Magnetic Ground State of Quarter-Doped Manganites $R_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er)

Polycrystalline samples of the quarter-doped manganites $R_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) were studied by X-ray diffraction and AC/DC susceptibility measurements. All five samples are orthorhombic and exhibit similar magnetic properties: enhanced ferromagnetism below $T_1$ ($\sim80$ K) and a spin glass (SG) state below $T_{SG}$ ($\sim30$ K). With increasing $R^{3+}$ ionic size, both $T_1$ and $T_{SG}$ generally increase. The single crystal neutron diffraction results on Tb$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ revealed that the SG state is mainly composed of a short-range ordered version of a novel canted (i.e. noncollinear) antiferromagnetic spin state. Furthermore, calculations based on the double exchange model for quarter-doped manganites reveal that this new magnetic phase provides a transition state between the ferromagnetic state and the theoretically predicted spin-orthogonal stripe phase.

Electronic Griffiths Phase in the Te - Doped Semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$

We report on the emergence of an Electronic Griffiths Phase (EGP) in the doped semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$, predicted for disordered insulators with random localized moments in the vicinity of a metal-insulator transition (MIT). Magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic measurements of Fe(Sb$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$)$_{2}$ single crystals show signatures of disorder-induced non-Fermi liquid behavior and a Wilson ratio expected for strong electronic correlations. The EGP states are found on the metallic boundary, between the insulating state ($x = 0$) and a long-range albeit weak magnetic order ($x \geq 0.075$).

Inter-planar coupling dependent magnetoresistivity in high purity layered metals

The magnetic field-induced changes in the conductivity of metals are the subject of intense interest, both for revealing new phenomena and as a valuable tool for determining their Fermi surface. Here, we report a hitherto unobserved magnetoresistive effect in ultra-clean layered metals, namely a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance that is capable of overcoming their very pronounced orbital one. This effect is correlated with the inter-layer coupling disappearing for fields applied along the so-called Yamaji angles where the inter-layer coupling vanishes. Therefore, it is intrinsically associated with the Fermi points in the field-induced quasi-one-dimensional electronic dispersion, implying that it results from the axial anomaly among these Fermi points. In its original formulation, the anomaly is predicted to violate separate number conservation laws for left- and right-handed chiral- (e.g. Weyl) fermions. Its observation in PdCoO$_2$, PtCoO$_2$ and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ suggests that the anomaly affects the transport of clean conductors, particularly near the quantum limit.

Statics and dynamics of the highly correlated spin ice Ho2Ge2O7

The pyrochlore Ho2Ge2O7 is a new highly correlated spin ice material. Physical property measurements including x-ray diffraction, dc susceptibility and ac susceptibility, confirm that it shares the distinctive characteristics of other known spin ices. Polarized neutron scattering measurements on a powder sample, combined with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) refinements, give unique information about the spin ice state in Ho2Ge2O7. RMC refinements are used to fit the powder magnetic diffuse scattering and predict the single crystal magnetic scattering of Ho2Ge2O7, demonstrating consistency with spin ice behavior.

Ground state selection in XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets R$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (R = Er, Yb)

Elastic neutron scattering, ac susceptibility, and specific heat experiments on the pyrochlores Er$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Yb$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ show that both systems are antiferromagnetically ordered in the $Γ_5$ manifold. The ground state is a $ψ_{3}$ phase for the Er sample and a $ψ_{2}$ or $ψ_{3}$ phase for the Yb sample, which suggests "Order by Disorder"(ObD) physics. Furthermore, we unify the various magnetic ground states of all known R$_{2}$B$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (R = Er, Yb, B = Sn, Ti, Ge) compounds through the enlarged XY type exchange interaction $J_{\pm}$ under chemical pressure. The mechanism for this evolution is discussed in terms of the phase diagram proposed in the theoretical study [Wong et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 144402, (2013)].

High pressure floating zone growth and structural properties of ferrimagnetic quantum paraelectric BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$

High quality single crystals of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ were grown using the floating zone technique in flowing oxygen pressurized to 100 atm. Single crystal neutron diffraction was used to determine the nuclear and magnetic structure of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ at 4 K and 295 K. At both temperatures, there exist local electric dipoles formed by the off-mirror-plane displacements of magnetic Fe$^{3+}$ ions at the bipyramidal sites. The displacement at 4 K is about half of that at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the specific heat shows no anomaly associated with long range polar ordering in the temperature range from 1.90-300 K. The inverse dielectric permittivity, $1/\varepsilon$, along the c-axis shows a $T^2$ temperature dependence between 10 K and 20 K, with a significantly reduced temperature dependence displayed below 10 K. Moreover, as the sample is cooled below 1.4 K there is an anomalous sharp upturn in $1/\varepsilon$. These features resemble those of classic quantum paraelectrics such as SrTiO$_3$. The presence of the upturn in $1/\varepsilon$ indicates that BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ is a critical quantum paraelectric system with Fe$^{3+}$ ions involved in both magnetic and electric dipole formation.

Dimerization-Induced Fermi-Surface Reconstruction in IrTe2

We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study on IrTe2 single crystals showing complex dimer formations. By comparing the angle dependence of dHvA oscillations with band structure calculations, we show distinct Fermi surface reconstruction induced by a 1/5-type and a 1/8-type dimerizations. This verifies that an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional conducting plane across the layers is induced by dimerization in both cases. A phase transition to the 1/8 phase with higher dimer density reveals that local instabilities associated with intra- and interdimer couplings are the main driving force for complex dimer formations in IrTe2.

Incipient Ferromagnetism in Tb2Ge2O7: Application of Chemical Pressure to the Enigmatic Spin Liquid, Tb2Ti2O7

The origin of the spin liquid state in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has challenged experimentalists and theorists alike for nearly 20 years. To improve our understanding of the exotic magnetism in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, we have synthesized a chemical pressure analog, Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$. Germanium substitution results in a lattice contraction and enhanced exchange interactions. We have characterized the magnetic ground state of Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ with specific heat, ac and dc magnetic susceptibility, and polarized neutron scattering measurements. Akin to Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, there is no long-range order in Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ down to 20 mK. The Weiss temperature of $-$19.2(1) K, which is more negative than that of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, supports the picture of stronger antiferromagnetic exchange. Polarized neutron scattering of Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ reveals that at 3.5 K liquid-like correlations dominate in this system. However, below 1 K, the liquid-like correlations give way to intense short-range ferromagnetic correlations with a length scale related to the Tb-Tb nearest neighbor distance. Despite stronger antiferromagnetic exchange, the ground state of Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ has ferromagnetic character, in stark contrast to the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic order observed in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

Magnetoelectric coupling tuned by competing anisotropies in Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$TiO$_3$

A flop of electric polarization from $P$$\parallel$$c$ ($P_c$) to $P$$\parallel$$a$ ($P_a$) is observed in MnTiO$_3$ as a spin flop transition is triggered by a $c$-axis magnetic field, $H_{\|c}$=7 T. The critical magnetic field $H_{\|c}$ for $P_a$ is significantly reduced in Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$TiO$_3$ (x=0.33). $P_a$ and $P_c$ have been observed with both $H_{\|c}$ and $H_{\|a}$. Neutron diffraction measurements revealed similar magnetic arrangements for the two compositions where the ordered spins couple antiferromagnetically with their nearest intra- and inter-planar neighbors. In the x=0.33 system, the uniaxial and planar anisotropies of Mn$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ compete and give rise to a spin reorientation transition at $T_R$. A magnetic field, $H_{\|c}$, aligns the spins along $c$ for $T_R$$<$$T$$<$$T_N$. The rotation of the collinear spins away from the $c$-axis for $T$$<$$T_R$ alters the magnetic point symmetry and gives rise to a new ME susceptibility tensor form. Such linear ME response provides satisfactory explanation for the behavior of the field-induced electric polarization in both compositions. As the Ni content increases to x=0.5 and 0.68, the ME effect disappears as a new magnetic phase emerges.

Successive spin-flop transitions of Neel-type antiferromagnet Li$_2$MnO$_3$ single crystal with honeycomb-lattice

We have carried out high magnetic field studies of single-crystalline Li$_2$MnO$_3$, a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet. Its magnetic phase diagram was mapped out using magnetization measurements at applied fields up to 35 T. Our results show that it undergoes two successive meta-magnetic transitions around 9 T fields applied perpendicular to the ab-plane (along the c*-axis). These phase transitions are completely absent in the magnetization measured with field applied along the ab-plane. In order to understand this magnetic phase diagram, we developed a mean-field model starting from the correct Neel-type magnetic structure, consistent with our single crystal neutron diffraction data at zero field. Our model calculations succeeded in explaining the two meta-magnetic transitions that arise when Li$_2$MnO$_3$ enters two different spin-flop phases from the zero field Neel phase.

Quantum Oscillations of the Metallic Triangular-lattice Antiferromagnet PdCrO2

We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations and first-principle calculations for triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO2 showing unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The dHvA oscillations in PdCrO2 reveal presence of several 2 dimensional Fermi surfaces of smaller size than found in nonmagnetic PdCoO2. This evidences Fermi surface reconstruction due to the non-collinear 120 antiferromagnetic ordering of the localized Cr, consistent with the first principle calculations. The temperature dependence of dHvA oscillations shows no signature of additional modification of Cr spin structure below TN. Considering that the 120 helical ordering of Cr spins has a zero scalar spin chirality, our results suggest that PdCrO2 is a rare example of the metallic triangular antiferromagnets whose unconventional AHE can not be understood in terms of the spin chirality mechanism.

Spin-Chiral Bulk Fermi Surfaces of BiTeI Proven by Quantum Oscillations

We present the Fermi-surface map of the spin-chiral bulk states for the non-centrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI using de Haas-van Alphen and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. We identify two distinct Fermi surfaces with a unique spindle-torus-type topology and the non-trivial Berry phases, confirming the spin chirality with oppositely circulating spin-texture. Near the quantum limit at high magnetic fields, we find a substantial Zeeman effect with an effective g-factor of ~ 60 for the Rashba-split Fermi surfaces. These findings provide clear evidence of strong Rashba and Zeeman coupling in the bulk states of BiTeI, suggesting that BiTeI is a good platform hosting the spin-polarized chiral states.

Magnetic transitions and magnetodielectric effect in the antiferromagnet SrNdFeO$_4$

We investigated the magnetic phase diagram of single crystals of SrNdFeO$_{4}$ by measuring the magnetic properties, the specific heat and the dielectric permittivity. The system has two magnetically active ions, Fe$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$. The Fe$^{3+}$ spins are antiferromagnetically ordered below 360 K with the moments lying in the ab-plane, and undergo a reorientation transition at about 35-37 K to an antiferromagnetic order with the moments along the c-axis. A short-range, antiferromagnetic ordering of Nd$^{3+}$ along the c-axis was attributed to the reorientation of Fe$^{3+}$ followed by a long-range ordering at lower temperature [S. Oyama {\it et al.} J. Phys.: Condens. Matter. {\bf 16}, 1823 (2004)]. At low temperatures and magnetic fields above 8 T, the Nd$^{3+}$ moments are completely spin-polarized. The dielectric permittivity also shows anomalies associated with spin configuration changes, indicating that this compound has considerable coupling between spin and lattice. A possible magnetic structure is proposed to explain the results.

Magneto-electric effect in NdCrTiO5

We have measured the dielectric constant and the pyroelectric current of orthorhombic (space group $Pbam$) NdCrTiO$_5$ polycrystalline samples. The dielectric constant and the pyroelectric current show features associated with ferroelectric transitions at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_{\text{N}}$ = 21 K). The effect of magnetic fields is to enhance the features almost linearly up to the maximum measured field (7 T) with a spontaneous polarization value of $\sim 3.5 μ$C/m$^2$. Two possible scenarios, the linear magnetoelectric effect and multiferroicity (antiferromagnetism + ferroelectricity), are discussed as possible explanations for the observations.

Multiband effects on beta-FeSe single crystals

We present the upper critical fields Hc2(T) and Hall effect in beta-FeSe single crystals. The Hc2(T) increases as the temperature is lowered for field applied parallel and perpendicular to (101), the natural growth facet of the crystal. The Hc2(T) for both field directions and the anisotropy at low temperature increase under pressure. Hole carriers are dominant at high magnetic fields. However, the contribution of electron-type carriers is significant at low fields and low temperature. Our results show that multiband effects dominate Hc2(T) and electronic transport in the normal state.

Angular dependent magnetothermopower of alpha-(ET)2KHg(SCN)4

The magnetic field and angular dependencies of the thermopower and Nernst effect of the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor alpha-(ET)2KHg(SCN)4 are experimentally measured at temperatures below (4 K) and above (9 K) the transition temperature to fields of In addition, a theoretical model which involves a magnetic breakdown effect between the q1D and q2D bands is proposed in order to simulate the data. Analysis of the background components of the thermopower and Nernst effect imply that at low temperatures, in the CDW state, the properties of alpha-(ET)2KHg(SCN)4 are determined mostly by the orbits on the new open Fermi sheets. Quantum oscillations observed in the both thermoelectric effects, at fields above 8 T, originate only from the alpha orbit.

Determination of the Upper Critical Field of a Single Crystal LiFeAs: The Magnetic Torque Study up to 35 Tesla

We report on the upper critical field B_c2 of a superconducting LiFeAs single crystal with T_c~16 K, determined from magnetic torque measurements in dc-magnetic fields up to 35 T and at temperatures down to 0.3 K. B_c2 at 0.3 K is obtained to be 26.4 T and 15.5 T for the applied field B_a||ab and B_a||c, respectively. The anisotropy parameter $Γ$=$B_c2^ab / B_c2^c$ is ~ 3 at T_c and decreases to 1.7 as $T \rightarrow 0$, showing rather isotropic superconductivity. While B_c2 is orbitally-limited for B_a||c, the spin-paramagnetic effect is evident in the temperature dependence of B_c2 for B_a||ab

Effects of excess Fe on upper critical field and magnetotransport in Fe1+y(Te1-xSx)z

We have investigated the upper critical field anisotropy and magnetotransport properties of Fe1.14(1)Te0.91(2)S0.09(2) single crystals in stable magnetic fields up to 35 T. The results show that u0Hc2(T) along the c axis and in the ab-plane exhibit saturation at low temperatures. The anisotropy of u0Hc2(T) decreases with decreasing temperature, becoming nearly isotropic for T->0. Our analysis indicates that the spin-paramagnetic pair-breaking with spin-orbital scattering is responsible for the behavior of u0Hc2(T). Furthermore, from analysis of the normal state properties, we show evidence that the excess Fe acting as Kondo-type impurities is a key factor determining the normal and superconducting state physical properties.

Fermi Surface of Cr$_{1-x}$V$_x$ across the Quantum Critical Point

We have measured de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of Cr$_{1-x}$V$_x$, $0 \le x \le 0.05$, at high fields for samples on both sides of the quantum critical point at $x_c=0.035$. For all samples we observe only those oscillations associated with a single small hole band with magnetic breakdown orbits of the reconstructed Fermi surface evident for $x<x_c$. The absence of oscillations from Fermi surface sheets most responsible for the spin density wave (SDW) in Cr for $x>x_c$ is further evidence for strong fluctuation scattering of these charge carriers well into the paramagnetic regime. We find no significant mass enhancement of the carriers in the single observed band at any $x$. An anomalous field dependence of the dHvA signal for our $x=0.035$ crystal at particular orientations of the magnetic field is identified as due to magnetic breakdown that we speculate results from a field induced SDW transition at high fields.

Pauli-limited upper critical field in Fe1+yTe1-xSex

In this work we investigated the temperature dependence of the upper critical field u0Hc2(T) of Fe1.02(3)Te0.61(4)Se0.39(4) and Fe1.05(3)Te0.89(2)Se0.11(2) single crystals by measuring the magnetotransport properties in stable dc magnetic fields up to 35 T. Both crystals show that u0Hc2(T) in the ab-plane and along the c-axis exhibit saturation at low temperatures. The anisotropy of u0Hc2(T) decreases with decreasing temperature, becoming nearly isotropic when the temperature T->0. Furthermore, u0Hc2(0) deviates from the conventional Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) theoretical prediction values for both field directions. Our analysis indicates that the spin-paramagnetic pair-breaking effect is responsible for the temperature-dependent behavior of u0Hc2(T) in both field directions.

Thermally activated energy and flux flow Hall effect of Fe1+y(Te1-xSx)z

Thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) and flux flow Hall effect (FFHE) of Fe(Te,S) single crystal in the mixed state are studied in magnetic fields up to 35 T. Thermally activated energy (TAE) is analyzed using conventional Arrhenius relation and modified TAFF theory which is closer to experimental results. The results indicate that there is a crossover from single-vortex pinning region to collective creep pinning region with increasing magnetic field. The temperature dependence of TAE is different for H//ab and H//c. On the other hand, the analysis of FFHE in the mixed state indicates that there is no Hall sign reversal. We also observe scaling behavior |Rhoxy(H)| = A*Rhoxx(H)^beta.

Geometrical and orbital effects in a quasi-one dimensional conductor

The angular dependent magnetoresistance of (Per)2[Au(mnt)2] under pressure has revealed geometrical effects associated with the crystallographic parameters. Pressure suppresses the charge density wave ground state of the material, and in the metallic state both geometrical and orbital quantum interference effects appear. Through magnetic field dependence and orientation, the orbital and geometrical effects are independently identified. We compare the results from (Per)2[Au(mnt)2] with previous studies of the well-known Bechgaard salts.

Orbital-dependent metamagnetic response in Sr4Ru3O10

We show that the metamagnetic transition in Sr$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ bifurcates into two transitions as the field is rotated away from the conducting planes. This two-step process comprises partial or total alignment of moments in ferromagnetic bands followed by an itinerant metamagnetic transition whose critical field increases with rotation. Evidence for itinerant metamagnetism is provided by the Shubnikov-de Hass effect which shows a non-trivial evolution of the geometry of the Fermi surface and an enhancement of the quasiparticles effective-mass across the transition. The metamagnetic response of Sr$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ is orbital-dependent and involves ferromagnetic and metamagnetic bands.

Resonant Nernst effect in the metallic and field-induced spin density wave states of (TMTSF)2ClO4

We examine an unusual phenomenon where, in tilted magnetic fields near magic angles parallel to crystallographic planes, a "giant" resonant Nernst signal has been observed by Wu et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 56601(2003)] in the metallic state of an organic conducting Bechgaard salt. We show that this effect appears to be a general feature of these materials, and is also present in the field induced spin density wave phase with even larger amplitude. Our results place new restrictions on models that treat the metallic state as an unconventional density wave or as a state with finite Cooper pairing.
