Lamperti Operators, Dilation Theory, and Applications in Noncommutative Ergodic Theory

In this paper, we develop a novel framework for quantitative mean ergodic theorems in the noncommutative setting, with a focus on actions of amenable groups and semigroups. We prove square function inequalities for ergodic averages arising from actions of groups of polynomial volume growth on a fixed noncommutative $L_p$-space for $1<p<\8$. To achieve this, we establish two endpoint estimates for a noncommutative square function on non-homogeneous space. Our approach relies on semi-commutative non-homogeneous harmonic analysis, including the non-doubling Calderón-Zygmund arguments for non-smooth kernels and $\mathrm{BMO}$ space theory, operator-valued inequalities related to balls and cubes in groups equipped with non-doubling measures, and a noncommutative generalization of the classical transference method for amenable group actions. As an application, we establish a quantitative ergodic theorem for the ergodic averages associated with the positive power of modulus representation arising from a Lamperti representation on noncommutative $L_p$-spaces, extending some results in \cite{Templeman2015}. To obtain quantitative ergodic theorem for semigroups of operators, in this paper, we address the open question of extending dilation theorem of Fackler-Glück from single operators to commuting tuples on Banach spaces including noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. Indeed our approach provides genuine joint $N$-dilations for commuting families, unifying and extending the classical dilation theorems of Sz.-Nagy--Foiaş and Akçoglu--Sucheston for a natural class of commuting tuple of contractions extending the abstract dilation theorem of of Fackler-Glück for commuting tuple of contractions. This enables us to obtain a quantitative ergodic theorem for a large class of semigroups of operators on $\mathbb{R}^d_{+}$.

Pointwise convergence of noncommutative Fourier series

This paper is devoted to the study of pointwise convergence of Fourier series for group von Neumann algebras and quantum groups. It is well-known that a number of approximation properties of groups can be interpreted as summation methods and mean convergence of the associated noncommutative Fourier series. Based on this framework, this paper studies the refined counterpart of pointwise convergence of these Fourier series. As a key ingredient, we develop a noncommutative bootstrap method and establish a general criterion of maximal inequalities for approximate identities of noncommutative Fourier multipliers. Based on this criterion, we prove that for any countable discrete amenable group, there exists a sequence of finitely supported positive definite functions tending to $1$ pointwise, so that the associated Fourier multipliers on noncommutative $L_p$-spaces satisfy the pointwise convergence for all $p>1$. In a similar fashion, we also obtain results for a large subclass of groups (as well as quantum groups) with the Haagerup property and the weak amenability. We also consider the analogues of Fejér and Bochner-Riesz means in the noncommutative setting. Our approach heavily relies on the noncommutative ergodic theory in conjunction with abstract constructions of Markov semigroups, inspired by quantum probability and geometric group theory. Finally, we also obtain as a byproduct the dimension free bounds of the noncommutative Hardy-Littlewood maximal inequalities associated with convex bodies.

Quantitative ergodic theorems for actions of groups of polynomial growth

We strengthen the maximal ergodic theorem for actions of groups of polynomial growth to a form involving jump quantity, which is the sharpest result among the family of variational or maximal ergodic theorems. As a consequence, we deduce in this setting the quantitative ergodic theorem, in particular, the upcrossing inequalities with exponential decay. The ideas or techniques involve probability theory, non-doubling Calderón-Zygmund theory, almost orthogonality argument and some delicate geometric argument involving the balls and the cubes on the group equipped with a not necessarily doubling measure.

Noncommutative weak $(1,1)$ type estimate for a square function from ergodic theory

In this paper, we investigate the boundedness of a square function from ergodic theory on noncommutative $L_{p}$-spaces. The main result is a weak $(1,1)$ type estimate of this square function. We also show the $(L_{\infty},\mathrm{BMO})$ estimate, and thus strong $(L_{p},L_{p})$ estimate by interpolation. The main novel difficulty lies in the fact that the kernel of this square function does not enjoy any regularity, which is crucial in showing such endpoint estimates for standard noncommutative Calderón-Zygmund singular integral operators.

Asymmetric Doob inequalities in continuous time

The present paper is devoted to the second part of our project on asymmetric maximal inequalities, where we consider martingales in continuous time. Let $(\mathcal M,τ)$ be a noncommutative probability space equipped with a continuous filtration of von Neumann subalgebras $(\mathcal M_t)_{0\leq t\leq1}$ whose union is weak-$*$ dense in $\mathcal{M}$. Let $\mathcal E_t$ denote the corresponding family of conditional expectations. As for discrete filtrations, we shall prove that for $1 < p < 2$ and $x \in L_p(\mathcal M,τ)$ one can find $a, b \in L_p(\mathcal M,τ)$ and contractions $u_t, v_t \in \mathcal M$ such that $$\mathcal E_t(x) = a u_t + v_t b \quad \mbox{and} \quad \max \big\{ \|a\|_p, \|b\|_p \big\} \le c_p \|x\|_p.$$ Moreover, $a u_t$ and $v_t b$ converge in the row/column Hardy spaces $\mathcal H_p^r(\mathcal M)$ and $\mathcal H_p^c(\mathcal M)$ respectively. We also confirm in the continuous setting the validity of related asymmetric maximal inequalities which we recently found for discrete filtrations, including $p=1$. As for other results in noncommutative martingale theory, the passage from discrete to continuous index is quite technical and requires genuinely new methods. Our approach towards asymmetric maximal inequalities is based on certain construction of conditional expectations for a sequence of projective systems of $L_p$-modules. The convergence in $\mathcal H_p^r(\mathcal M)$ and $\mathcal H_p^c(\mathcal M)$ also imposes new algebraic atomic decompositions.

Noncommutative maximal ergodic theorems for spherical means on the Heisenberg group

We prove maximal ergodic theorems for spherical averages on the Heisenberg groups acting on $L_p$ spaces over measure spaces not necessarily commutative, that is, on noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. The scale of $p$ is optimal in the reduced Heisenberg group case. We also obtain the corresponding individual ergodic theorems and differential theorems in the noncommutative setting. The results can be regarded as noncommutative analogues of Nevo-Thangavelu's ergodic theorems. The approach of proof involves recent developments in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces and in noncommutative harmonic analysis, in addition to the spectral theory used in the commutative setting.

Noncommutative multi-parameter Wiener-Wintner type ergodic theorem

In this paper, we establish a multi-parameter version of Bellow and Losert's Wiener-Wintner type ergodic theorem for dynamical systems not necessarily being commutative. More precisely, we introduce a weight class $\mathcal{D}$, which is shown to strictly include the multi-parameter bounded Besicovitch weight class, thus including the set $$Λ_d=\left\{\{λ^{k_1}_1\dotsmλ^{k_d}_d\}_{(k_1,\dots,k_d)\in \mathbb{N}^d}:\quad (λ_1,\dots,λ_d) \in \mathbb{T}^d\right\};$$ then prove a multi-parameter Bellow and Losert's Wiener-Wintner type ergodic theorem for the class $\mathcal{D}$ and for noncommutative trace preserving dynamical system $(\mathcal{M},τ,\mathbf{T})$. Restricted to consider the set $Λ_d$, we also prove a noncommutative multi-parameter analogue of Bourgain's uniform Wiener-Wintner ergodic theorem. The noncommutativity and the multi-parameter induce some difficulties in the proof. For instance, our arguments in proving the uniform convergence for a dense subset turn out to be quite different since the "pointwise" argument does not work in the noncommutative setting; to obtain the uniform convergence in the largest spaces, we show maximal inequality between the Orlicz spaces, which can not be deduced easily using classical extrapolation argument. Junge and Xu's noncommutative maximal inequalities with optimal order, together with the atomic decomposition of Orlicz spaces, play an essential role in overcoming the second difficulty.

Algebraic Davis decomposition and asymmetric Doob inequalities

In this paper we investigate asymmetric forms of Doob maximal inequality. The asymmetry is imposed by noncommutativity. Let $(\M,τ)$ be a noncommutative probability space equipped with a weak-$*$ dense filtration of von Neumann subalgebras $(\M_n)_{n \ge 1}$. Let $\E_n$ denote the corresponding family of conditional expectations. As an illustration for an asymmetric result, we prove that for $1 < p < 2$ and $x \in L_p(\M,τ)$ one can find $a, b \in L_p(\M,τ)$ and contractions $u_n, v_n \in \M$ such that $$\E_n(x) = a u_n + v_n b \quad \mbox{and} \quad \max \big\{ \|a\|_p, \|b\|_p \big\} \le c_p \|x\|_p.$$ Moreover, it turns out that $a u_n$ and $v_n b$ converge in the row/column Hardy spaces $\H_p^r(\M)$ and $\H_p^c(\M)$ respectively. In particular, this solves a problem posed by Defant and Junge in 2004. In the case $p=1$, our results establish a noncommutative form of Davis celebrated theorem on the relation between martingale maximal and square functions in $L_1$, whose noncommutative form has remained open for quite some time. Given $1 \le p \le 2$, we also provide new weak type maximal estimates, which imply in turn left/right almost uniform convergence of $\E_n(x)$ in row/column Hardy spaces. This improves the bilateral convergence known so far. Our approach is based on new forms of Davis martingale decomposition which are of independent interest, and an algebraic atomic description for the involved Hardy spaces. The latter results are new even for commutative von Neumann algebras.

Jump and variational inequalities for rough operators

In this paper, we systematically study jump and variational inequalities for rough operators, whose research have been initiated by Jones {\it et al}. More precisely, we show some jump and variational inequalities for the families $\mathcal T:=\{T_\varepsilon\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ of truncated singular integrals and $\mathcal M:=\{M_t\}_{t>0}$ of averaging operators with rough kernels, which are defined respectively by $$ T_\varepsilon f(x)=\int_{|y|>\varepsilon}\frac{Ω(y')}{|y|^n}f(x-y)dy $$ and $$M_t f(x)=\frac1{t^n}\int_{|y|<t}Ω(y')f(x-y)dy, $$ where the kernel $Ω$ belongs to $L\log^+\!\!L(\mathbf S^{n-1})$ or $H^1(\mathbf S^{n-1})$ or $\mathcal{G}_α(\mathbf S^{n-1})$ (the condition introduced by Grafakos and Stefanov). Some of our results are sharp in the sense that the underlying assumptions are the best known conditions for the boundedness of corresponding maximal operators.

Vector-valued Hilbert transforms along curves

In this paper, we show that Hilbert transforms along some curves are bounded on $L^p({\mathbb R}^n;X)$ for some $1<p<\infty$ and some UMD spaces $X$. In particular, we prove that the Hilbert transform along some curves are completely $L^p$-bounded in the terminology from operator space theory. Moreover, we obtain the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n;X)$-boundedness of anisotropic singular integrals by using the "method of rotations" of Calderón-Zygmund. All these results extend the existing related ones.

Banach lattice-valued $q$-variation and convexity

In this paper, we show that the $q$-variation for differential operator is not bounded in $L^p(\mathbb{R};L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}))$ for any $1<p<\infty$. As a consequence, the $q$-variation operator can not be used to characterize the Hardy-Littlewood property of the underlying Banach lattice. Moreover, for Köthe function spaces $X$ with $X^*$ norming such that $X$ is $r$-convex for some large $r$, and $X$ is not $s$-convex for any $s$, $r<s<\infty$, we obtain lower bounds of the $(L^p(\mathbb{R};X),L^p(\mathbb{R};X)$-bounds of the $q$-variation operator, which tends to $\infty$, as $r$ tends to $\infty$.

The behavior of the bounds of matrix-valued maximal inequality in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for large $n$

In this paper, we study the behavior of the bounds of matrix-valued maximal inequality in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for large $n$. The main result of this paper is that the $L_p$-bounds ($p>1$) can be taken to be independent of $n$, which is a generalization of Stein and Strömberg's resut in the scalar-valued case. We also show that the weak type $(1,1)$ bound has similar behavior as Stein and Stömberg's.

The behaviour of square functions from ergodic theory in $L^{\infty}$

In this paper, we analyze carefully the behaviour in $L^\infty(\mathbb R)$ of the square functions $S$ and $S_\mathcal I$'s, originating from ergodic theory. Firstly, we show that we can find some function $f\in L^\infty(\mathbb{R})$, such that $Sf$ equals infinity on a nonzero measure set. Secondly, we can find compact supported function $f\in L^\infty(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathcal I$ such that $S_\mathcal{I} f$ does not belong to $BMO$ space. Finally, we show that $S$ is bounded from $L^{\infty}_c$ to $BMO$ space. As a consequence, we solve an open question posed by Jones, Kaufman, Rosenblatt and Wierdl in \cite{JKRW98}. That is, $S_\mathcal I$ are uniformly bounded in $L^p(\mathbb R)$ with respect to $\mathcal I$ for $2<p<\infty$.

Vector valued $q$-variation for differential operators and semigroups I

In this paper, we establish $\mathcal B$-valued variational inequalities for differential operators, ergodic averages and symmetric diffusion semigroups under the condition that Banach space $\mathcal B$ has martingale cotype property. These results generalize, on the one hand Pisier and Xu's result on the variational inequalities for $\mathcal B$-valued martingales, on the other hand many classical variational inequalities in harmonic analysis and ergodic theory. Moreover, we show that Rademacher cotype $q$ is necessary for the $\mathcal B$-valued $q$-variational inequalities. As applications of the variational inequalities, we deduce the jump estimates and obtain quantitative information on the rate of convergence. It turns out the rate of convergence depends on the geometric property of the Banach space under consideration, which considerably improve Cowling and Leinert's result where it is shown that the convergence always holds for all Banach spaces.

Vector valued $q$-variation for differential operators and semigroups II

In this paper, we establish UMD lattice-valued variational inequalities for differential operators, ergodic averages and analytic semigroups. These results generalize, on the one hand some scalar-valued variational inequalities in ergodic theory, on the other hand Xu's very recent result on UMD lattice-valued maximal inequality. As a consequence, we deduce the jump estimates and obtain quantitative information on the rate of the pointwise convergence.

Calderón-Zygmund operators associated to matrix-valued kernels

Calderón-Zygmund operators with noncommuting kernels may fail to be Lp-bounded for $p \neq 2$, even for kernels with good size and smoothness properties. Matrix-valued paraproducts, Fourier multipliers on group vNa's or noncommutative martingale transforms are frameworks where we find such difficulties. We obtain weak type estimates for perfect dyadic CZO's and cancellative Haar shifts associated to noncommuting kernels in terms of a row/column decomposition of the function. Arbitrary CZO's satisfy $H_1 \to L_1$ type estimates. In conjunction with $L_\infty \to BMO$, we get certain row/column Lp estimates. Our approach also applies to noncommutative paraproducts or martingale transforms with noncommuting symbols/coefficients. Our results complement recent results of Junge, Mei, Parcet and Randrianantoanina.

John-Nirenberg inequality and atomic decomposition for noncommutative martingales

In this paper, we study the John-Nirenberg inequality for BMO and the atomic decomposition for H1 of noncommutative martingales. We first establish a crude version of the column (resp. row) John-Nirenberg inequality for all 0 < p < \infty. By an extreme point property of Lp -space for 0 < p \leq 1, we then obtain a fine version of this in equality. The latter corresponds exactly to the classical John-Nirenberg inequality and enables us to obtain an exponential integrability inequality like in the classical case. These results extend and improve Junge and Musat's John-Nirenberg inequality. By duality, we obtain the corresponding q-atomic decomposition for different Hardy spaces H1 for all 1<q\leq\infty, which extends the 2-atomic decomposition previously obtained by Bekjan et al. Finally, we give a negative answer to a question posed by Junge and Musat about BMO.

Wavelet approach to operator-valued Hardy spaces

This paper is devoted to the study of operator-valued Hardy spaces via wavelet method. This approach is parallel to that in noncommutative martingale case. We show that our Hardy spaces defined by wavelet coincide with those introduced by Tao Mei via the usual Lusin and Littlewood-Paley square functions. As a consequence, we give an explicit complete unconditional basis of the Hardy space H1(R) when H1(R) is equipped with an appropriate operator space structure.
