Trigonometric chaos and $\mathrm{X}_p$ inequalities II -- $\mathrm{X}_p$ inequalities in group von Neumann algebras

In the line of previous work by Naor, we establish new forms of metric $\mathrm{X}_p$ inequalities in group algebras under very general assumptions. Our results' applicability goes beyond the previously known setting in two directions. In first place, we find continuous forms of the $\mathrm{X}_p$ inequality in the $n$-dimensional torus. Second, we consider transferred forms of the sharp scalar valued metric $\mathrm{X}_p$ inequality in the von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(\mathrm{G})$ of a discrete group $\mathrm{G}$. As a byproduct of our results, some metric consequences and their relation with bi-Lipschitz nonembeddability of Banach spaces are explored in the context of noncommutative $L_p$ spaces.

Asymmetric Doob inequalities in continuous time

The present paper is devoted to the second part of our project on asymmetric maximal inequalities, where we consider martingales in continuous time. Let $(\mathcal M,τ)$ be a noncommutative probability space equipped with a continuous filtration of von Neumann subalgebras $(\mathcal M_t)_{0\leq t\leq1}$ whose union is weak-$*$ dense in $\mathcal{M}$. Let $\mathcal E_t$ denote the corresponding family of conditional expectations. As for discrete filtrations, we shall prove that for $1 < p < 2$ and $x \in L_p(\mathcal M,τ)$ one can find $a, b \in L_p(\mathcal M,τ)$ and contractions $u_t, v_t \in \mathcal M$ such that $$\mathcal E_t(x) = a u_t + v_t b \quad \mbox{and} \quad \max \big\{ \|a\|_p, \|b\|_p \big\} \le c_p \|x\|_p.$$ Moreover, $a u_t$ and $v_t b$ converge in the row/column Hardy spaces $\mathcal H_p^r(\mathcal M)$ and $\mathcal H_p^c(\mathcal M)$ respectively. We also confirm in the continuous setting the validity of related asymmetric maximal inequalities which we recently found for discrete filtrations, including $p=1$. As for other results in noncommutative martingale theory, the passage from discrete to continuous index is quite technical and requires genuinely new methods. Our approach towards asymmetric maximal inequalities is based on certain construction of conditional expectations for a sequence of projective systems of $L_p$-modules. The convergence in $\mathcal H_p^r(\mathcal M)$ and $\mathcal H_p^c(\mathcal M)$ also imposes new algebraic atomic decompositions.

Nondoubling Calderón-Zygmund theory -a dyadic approach-

Given a measure $μ$ of polynomial growth, we refine a deep result by David and Mattila to construct an atomic martingale filtration of $\mathrm{supp}(μ)$ which provides the right framework for a dyadic form of nondoubling harmonic analysis. Despite this filtration being highly irregular, its atoms are comparable to balls in the given metric |which in turn are all doubling| and satisfy a weaker but crucial form of regularity. Our dyadic formulation is effective to address three basic questions: i) A dyadic form of Tolsa's RBMO space which contains it. ii) Lerner's domination and $A_2$-type bounds for nondoubling measures. iii) A noncommutative form of nonhomogeneous Calderón-Zygmund theory. Our martingale RBMO space preserves the crucial properties of Tolsa's original definition and reveals its interpolation behavior with the $L_p$ scale in the category of Banach spaces, unknown so far. On the other hand, due to some known obstructions for Haar shifts and related concepts over nondoubling measures, our pointwise domination theorem via sparsity naturally deviates from its doubling analogue. In a different direction, matrix-valued harmonic analysis over noncommutative $L_p$ spaces has recently produced profound applications. Our analogue for nondoubling measures was expected for quite some time. Finally, we also find a dyadic form of the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition which unifies those by Tolsa and López-Sánchez/Martell/Parcet.

Algebraic Davis decomposition and asymmetric Doob inequalities

In this paper we investigate asymmetric forms of Doob maximal inequality. The asymmetry is imposed by noncommutativity. Let $(\M,τ)$ be a noncommutative probability space equipped with a weak-$*$ dense filtration of von Neumann subalgebras $(\M_n)_{n \ge 1}$. Let $\E_n$ denote the corresponding family of conditional expectations. As an illustration for an asymmetric result, we prove that for $1 < p < 2$ and $x \in L_p(\M,τ)$ one can find $a, b \in L_p(\M,τ)$ and contractions $u_n, v_n \in \M$ such that $$\E_n(x) = a u_n + v_n b \quad \mbox{and} \quad \max \big\{ \|a\|_p, \|b\|_p \big\} \le c_p \|x\|_p.$$ Moreover, it turns out that $a u_n$ and $v_n b$ converge in the row/column Hardy spaces $\H_p^r(\M)$ and $\H_p^c(\M)$ respectively. In particular, this solves a problem posed by Defant and Junge in 2004. In the case $p=1$, our results establish a noncommutative form of Davis celebrated theorem on the relation between martingale maximal and square functions in $L_1$, whose noncommutative form has remained open for quite some time. Given $1 \le p \le 2$, we also provide new weak type maximal estimates, which imply in turn left/right almost uniform convergence of $\E_n(x)$ in row/column Hardy spaces. This improves the bilateral convergence known so far. Our approach is based on new forms of Davis martingale decomposition which are of independent interest, and an algebraic atomic description for the involved Hardy spaces. The latter results are new even for commutative von Neumann algebras.

On directional maximal operators in higher dimensions

We introduce a notion of (finite order) lacunarity in higher dimensions for which we can bound the associated directional maximal operators in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$, with $p>1$. In particular, we are able to treat the classes previously considered by Nagel--Stein--Wainger, Sjögren--Sjölin and Carbery. Closely related to this, we find a characterisation of the sets of directions which give rise to bounded maximal operators. The bounds enable Lebesgue type differentiation of integrals in $L_{\text{loc}}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$, replacing balls by tubes which point in these directions.

Smooth Fourier multipliers in group algebras via Sobolev dimension

We investigate Fourier multipliers with smooth symbols defined over locally compact Hausdorff groups. Our main results in this paper establish new Hörmander-Mikhlin criteria for spectral and non-spectral multipliers. The key novelties which shape our approach are three. First, we control a broad class of Fourier multipliers by certain maximal operators in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. This general principle ---exploited in Euclidean harmonic analysis during the last 40 years--- is of independent interest and might admit further applications. Second, we replace the formerly used cocycle dimension by the Sobolev dimension. This is based on a noncommutative form of the Sobolev embedding theory for Markov semigroups initiated by Varopoulos, and yields more flexibility to measure the smoothness of the symbol. Third, we introduce a dual notion of polynomial growth to further exploit our maximal principle for non-spectral Fourier multipliers. The combination of these ingredients yields new $L_p$ estimates for smooth Fourier multipliers in group algebras.

Atomic blocks for noncommutative martingales

Given a probability space $(Ω,Σ,μ)$, the Hardy space $\mathrm{H}_1(Ω)$ which is associated to the martingale square function does not admit a classical atomic decomposition when the underlying filtration is not regular. In this paper we construct a decomposition of $\mathrm{H}_1(Ω)$ into "atomic blocks"${}$ in the spirit of Tolsa, which we will introduce for martingales. We provide three proofs of this result. Only the first one also applies to noncommutative martingales, the main target of this paper. The other proofs emphasize alternative approaches for commutative martingales. One might be well-known to experts, using a weaker notion of atom and approximation by atomic filtrations. The last one adapts Tolsa's argument replacing medians by conditional medians.

Large BMO spaces vs interpolation

In this paper we introduce a class of BMO spaces which interpolate with $L_p$ and are sufficiently large to serve as endpoints for new singular integral operators. More precisely, let $(Ω, Σ, μ)$ be a $σ$-finite measure space. Consider two filtrations of $Σ$ by successive refinement of two atomic $σ$-algebras $Σ_\mathrm{a}, Σ_\mathrm{b}$ having trivial intersection. Construct the corresponding truncated martingale BMO spaces. Then, the intersection seminorm only leaves out constants and we provide a quite flexible condition on $(Σ_\mathrm{a}, Σ_\mathrm{b})$ so that the resulting space interpolates with $L_p$ in the expected way. In the presence of a metric $d$, we obtain endpoint estimates for Calderón-Zygmund operators on $(Ω,μ, d)$ under additional conditions on $(Σ_\mathrm{a}, Σ_\mathrm{b})$. These are weak forms of the \lq isoperimetric\rq${}$ and the \lq locally doubling\rq${}$ properties of Carbonaro/Mauceri/Meda which admit less concentration at the boundary. Examples of particular interest include densities of the form $e^{\pm |x|^α}$ for any $α> 0$ or $(1 + |x|^β)^{-1}$ for any $β\gtrsim n^{3/2}$. A (limited) comparison with Tolsa's RBMO is also possible. On the other hand, a more intrinsic formulation yields a Calderón-Zygmund theory adapted to regular filtrations over $(Σ_\mathrm{a}, Σ_\mathrm{b})$ without using a metric. This generalizes well-known estimates for perfect dyadic and Haar shift operators. In contrast to previous approaches, ours extends to matrix-valued functions (via recent results from noncommutative martingale theory) for which only limited results are known and no satisfactory nondoubling theory exists so far.

Noncommutative de Leeuw theorems

Let H be a subgroup of some locally compact group G. Assume H is approximable by discrete subgroups and G admits neighborhood bases which are "almost-invariant" under conjugation by finite subsets of H. Let $m: G \to \mathbb{C}$ be a bounded continuous symbol giving rise to an Lp-bounded Fourier multiplier (not necessarily cb-bounded) on the group von Neumann algebra of G for some $1 \le p \le \infty$. Then, $m_{\mid_H}$ yields an Lp-bounded Fourier multiplier on the group von Neumann algebra of H provided the modular function $Δ_H$ coincides with $Δ_G$ over H. This is a noncommutative form of de Leeuw's restriction theorem for a large class of pairs (G,H), our assumptions on H are quite natural and recover the classical result. The main difference with de Leeuw's original proof is that we replace dilations of gaussians by other approximations of the identity for which certain new estimates on almost multiplicative maps are crucial. Compactification via lattice approximation and periodization theorems are also investigated.

Noncommutative Riesz transforms -- Dimension free bounds and Fourier multipliers

We obtain dimension free estimates for noncommutative Riesz transforms associated to conditionally negative length functions on group von Neumann algebras. This includes Poisson semigroups, beyond Bakry's results in the commutative setting. Our proof is inspired by Pisier's method and a new Khintchine inequality for crossed products. New estimates include Riesz transforms associated to fractional laplacians in $\mathbb{R}^n$ (where Meyer's conjecture fails) or to the word length of free groups. Lust-Piquard's work for discrete laplacians on LCA groups is also generalized in several ways. In the context of Fourier multipliers, we will prove that Hörmander-Mihlin multipliers are Littlewood-Paley averages of our Riesz transforms. This is highly surprising in the Euclidean and (most notably) noncommutative settings. As application we provide new Sobolev/Besov type smoothness conditions. The Sobolev type condition we give refines the classical one and yields dimension free constants. Our results hold for arbitrary unimodular groups.

Riesz and frame systems generated by unitary actions of discrete groups

We characterize orthonormal bases, Riesz bases and frames which arise from the action of a countable discrete group $Γ$ on a single element $ψ$ of a given Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. As $Γ$ might not be abelian, this is done in terms of a bracket map taking values in the $L^1$-space associated to the group von Neumann algebra of $Γ$. Our result generalizes recent work for LCA groups. In many cases, the bracket map can be computed in terms of a noncommutative form of the Zak transform.

Smooth Fourier multipliers on group von Neumann algebras

We investigate Fourier multipliers on the compact dual of arbitrary discrete groups. Our main result is a Hörmander-Mihlin multiplier theorem for finite-dimensional cocycles with optimal smoothness condition. We also find Littlewood-Paley type inequalities in group von Neumann algebras, prove $L_p$ estimates for noncommutative Riesz transforms and characterize $L_\infty \to \mathrm{BMO}$ boundedness for radial Fourier multipliers. The key novelties of our approach are to exploit group cocycles and cross products in Fourier multiplier theory in conjunction with BMO spaces associated to semigroups of operators and a noncommutative generalization of Calderón-Zygmund theory.

An invitation to harmonic analysis associated with semigroups of operators

This article is an introduction to our recent work in harmonic analysis associated with semigroups of operators, in the effort of finding a noncommutative Calderón-Zygmund theory for von Neumann algebras. The classical CZ theory has been traditionally developed on metric measure spaces satisfying additional regularity properties. In the lack of such metrics -or with very little information on the metric- Markov semigroups of operators appear to be the right substitutes of classical metric/geometric tools in harmonic analysis. Our approach is particularly useful in the noncommutative setting but it is also valid in classical/commutative frameworks.

Hypercontractivity for free products

In this paper, we obtain optimal time hypercontractivity bounds for the free product extension of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup acting on the Clifford algebra. Our approach is based on a central limit theorem for free products of spin matrix algebras with mixed commutation/anticommutation relations. With another use of Speicher's central limit theorem, we may also obtain the same bounds for free products of q-deformed von Neumann algebras interpolating between the fermonic and bosonic frameworks. This generalizes the work of Nelson, Gross, Carlen/Lieb and Biane. Our main application yields hypercontractivity bounds for the free Poisson semigroup acting on the group algebra of the free group Fn, uniformly in the number of generators.

Hypercontractivity in group von Neumann algebras

In this paper, we provide a combinatorial/numerical method to establish new hypercontractivity estimates in group von Neumann algebras. We will illustrate our method with free groups, triangular groups and finite cyclic groups, for which we shall obtain optimal time hypercontractive $L_2 \to L_q$ inequalities with respect to the Markov process given by the word length and with $q$ an even integer. Interpolation and differentiation also yield general $L_p \to L_q$ hypercontrativity for $1 < p \le q < \infty$ via logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. Our method admits further applications to other discrete groups without small loops as far as the numerical part ---which varies from one group to another--- is implemented and tested in a computer. We also develop another combinatorial method which does not rely on computational estimates and provides (non-optimal) $L_p \to L_q$ hypercontractive inequalities for a larger class of groups/lengths, including any finitely generated group equipped with a conditionally negative word length, like infinite Coxeter groups. Our second method also yields hypercontractivity bounds for groups admitting a finite dimensional proper cocycle. Hypercontractivity fails for conditionally negative lengths in groups satisfying Kazhdan property (T).

Calderón-Zygmund operators associated to matrix-valued kernels

Calderón-Zygmund operators with noncommuting kernels may fail to be Lp-bounded for $p \neq 2$, even for kernels with good size and smoothness properties. Matrix-valued paraproducts, Fourier multipliers on group vNa's or noncommutative martingale transforms are frameworks where we find such difficulties. We obtain weak type estimates for perfect dyadic CZO's and cancellative Haar shifts associated to noncommuting kernels in terms of a row/column decomposition of the function. Arbitrary CZO's satisfy $H_1 \to L_1$ type estimates. In conjunction with $L_\infty \to BMO$, we get certain row/column Lp estimates. Our approach also applies to noncommutative paraproducts or martingale transforms with noncommuting symbols/coefficients. Our results complement recent results of Junge, Mei, Parcet and Randrianantoanina.

Twisted Hilbert transforms vs Kakeya sets of directions

Given a discrete group $\G$ and an orthogonal action $γ: \G \to O(n)$ we study $L_p$ convergence of Fourier integrals which are frequency supported on the semidirect product $\R^n \rtimes_γ\G$. Given a unit $u \in \R^n$ and $1 < p \neq 2 < \infty$, our main result shows that the twisted (directional) Hilbert transform $H_u \rtimes_γid_\G$ is $L_p$-bounded iff the orbit $\mathcal{O}_γ(u)$ is finite. This is in sharp contrast with twisted Riesz transforms $R_u \rtimes_γid_\G$, which are always bounded. Our result characterizes Fourier summability in $L_p$ for this class of groups. We also extend de Leeuw's compactification theorem to this setting and obtain stronger estimates for functions with "lacunary" frequency support.

A transference method in quantum probability

Working with a rather general notion of independence, we provide a transference method which allows to compare the p-norm of sums of independent copies with the p-norm of sums of free copies. Our main technique is to construct explicit operator space Lp embeddings preserving independence to reduce the problem to L1, where some recent results by the first-named author can be used. We find applications for noncommutative Khincthine/Rosenthal type inequalities and for noncommutative Lp embedding theory.
