Generalized Poincaré inequality for quantum Markov semigroups

We prove a noncommutative $(p,p)$-Poincaré inequality for trace-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on tracial von Neumann algebras, assuming only the existence of a spectral gap. Extending semi-commutative results of Huang and Tropp, our argument uses Markov dilations to obtain chain-rule estimates for Dirichlet forms and employs amalgamated free products to define an appropriate noncommutative derivation. We further generalize the argument to non-tracial $σ$-finite von Neumann algebras under the weaker assumption of GNS-detailed balance, using Haagerup's reduction and Kosaki's interpolation theorem. As applications, we recover noncommutative Khintchine and sub-exponential concentration inequalities.

Resource-Dependent Complexity of Quantum Channels

We introduce a new framework for quantifying the complexity of quantum channels, grounded in a suitably chosen resource set. This class of convex functions is designed to analyze the complexity of both open and closed quantum systems. By leveraging Lipschitz norms inspired by quantum optimal transport theory, we rigorously establish the fundamental properties of this complexity measure. The flexibility in selecting the resource set allows us to derive effective lower bounds for gate complexities and simulation costs of both Hamiltonian simulations and dynamics of open quantum systems. Additionally, we demonstrate that this complexity measure exhibits linear growth for random quantum circuits and finite-dimensional quantum simulations, up to the Brown-Susskind threshold.

Entropy Uncertainty Relations and Strong Sub-additivity of Quantum Channels

We prove an entropic uncertainty relation for two quantum channels, extending the work of Frank and Lieb for quantum measurements. This is obtained via a generalized strong super-additivity (SSA) of quantum entropy. Motivated by Petz's algebraic SSA inequality, we also obtain a generalized SSA for quantum relative entropy. As a special case, it gives an improved data processing inequality.

Geometry of Banach spaces: a new route towards Position Based Cryptography

In this work we initiate the study of Position Based Quantum Cryptography (PBQC) from the perspective of geometric functional analysis and its connections with quantum games. The main question we are interested in asks for the optimal amount of entanglement that a coalition of attackers have to share in order to compromise the security of any PBQC protocol. Known upper bounds for that quantity are exponential in the size of the quantum systems manipulated in the honest implementation of the protocol. However, known lower bounds are only linear. In order to deepen the understanding of this question, here we propose a Position Verification (PV) protocol and find lower bounds on the resources needed to break it. The main idea behind the proof of these bounds is the understanding of cheating strategies as vector valued assignments on the Boolean hypercube. Then, the bounds follow from the understanding of some geometric properties of particular Banach spaces, their type constants. Under some regularity assumptions on the former assignment, these bounds lead to exponential lower bounds on the quantum resources employed, clarifying the question in this restricted case. Known attacks indeed satisfy the assumption we make, although we do not know how universal this feature is. Furthermore, we show that the understanding of the type properties of some more involved Banach spaces would allow to drop out the assumptions and lead to unconditional lower bounds on the resources used to attack our protocol. Unfortunately, we were not able to estimate the relevant type constant. Despite that, we conjecture an upper bound for this quantity and show some evidence supporting it. A positive solution of the conjecture would lead to stronger security guarantees for the proposed PV protocol providing a better understanding of the question asked above.

Geometric Approach Towards Complete Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities

In this paper, we use the Carnot-Caratheodory distance from sub-Riemanian geometry to prove entropy decay estimates for all finite dimensional symmetric quantum Markov semigroups. This estimate is independent of the environment size and hence stable under tensorization. Our approach relies on the transference principle, the existence of $t$-designs, and the sub-Riemannian diameter of compact Lie groups and implies estimates for the spectral gap.

BMO-estimates for non-commutative vector valued Lipschitz functions

We construct Markov semi-groups $\mathcal{T}$ and associated BMO-spaces on a finite von Neumann algebra $(\mathcal{M}, τ)$ and obtain results for perturbations of commutators and non-commutative Lipschitz estimates. In particular, we prove that for any $A \in \mathcal{M}$ self-adjoint and $f: \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ Lipschitz there is a Markov semi-group $\mathcal{T}$ such that for $x \in \mathcal{M}$, \[ \Vert [f(A), x] \Vert_{{\rm BMO}(\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{T})} \leq c_{abs} \Vert f' \Vert_\infty \Vert [A, x] \Vert_\infty. \] We obtain an analogue of this result for more general von Neumann valued-functions $f: \mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathcal{N}$ by imposing Hörmander-Mikhlin type assumptions on $f$. In establishing these result we show that Markov dilations of Markov semi-groups have certain automatic continuity properties. We also show that Markov semi-groups of double operator integrals admit (standard and reversed) Markov dilations.

Complete Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities via Ricci curvature bounded below

We prove that for a symmetric Markov semigroup, Ricci curvature bounded from below by a non-positive constant combined with a finite $L_\infty$-mixing time implies the modified log-Sobolev inequality. Such $L_\infty$-mixing time estimates always hold for Markov semigroups that have spectral gap and finite Varopoulos dimension. Our results apply to non-ergodic quantum Markov semigroups with noncommutative Ricci curvature bounds recently introduced by Carlen and Maas. As an application, we prove that the heat semigroup on a compact Riemannian manifold admits a uniform modified log-Sobolev inequality for all its matrix-valued extensions.

Complete Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities via Ricci Curvature Bounded Below II

Using a non-negative curvature condition, we prove the complete version of modified log-Sobolev inequalities for central Markov semigroups on various compact quantum groups, including group von Neumann algebras, free orthogonal group and quantum automorphism groups. We also prove that the "geometric Ricci curvature lower bound" introduced by Junge-Li-LaRacuente is stable under tensor products and amalgamated free products. As an application, we obtain the geometric Ricci curvature lower bound and complete modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality for word-length semigroups on free group factors and amalgamated free product algebras.

Graph Hörmander Systems

This paper extends the Bakry-Émery theorem connecting the Ricci curvature and log-Sobolev inequalities to the matrix-valued setting. Using tools from noncommuative geometry, it is shown that for a right invariant second order differential operator on a compact Lie group, a lower bound for a matrix-valued modified log-Sobolev inequality is equivalent to a uniform lower bound for all finite dimensional representations. Using combinatorial tools, we obtain computable lower bounds for matrix-valued log-Sobolev inequalities of graph-Hörmander systems using combinatorial methods.

Asymmetric Doob inequalities in continuous time

The present paper is devoted to the second part of our project on asymmetric maximal inequalities, where we consider martingales in continuous time. Let $(\mathcal M,τ)$ be a noncommutative probability space equipped with a continuous filtration of von Neumann subalgebras $(\mathcal M_t)_{0\leq t\leq1}$ whose union is weak-$*$ dense in $\mathcal{M}$. Let $\mathcal E_t$ denote the corresponding family of conditional expectations. As for discrete filtrations, we shall prove that for $1 < p < 2$ and $x \in L_p(\mathcal M,τ)$ one can find $a, b \in L_p(\mathcal M,τ)$ and contractions $u_t, v_t \in \mathcal M$ such that $$\mathcal E_t(x) = a u_t + v_t b \quad \mbox{and} \quad \max \big\{ \|a\|_p, \|b\|_p \big\} \le c_p \|x\|_p.$$ Moreover, $a u_t$ and $v_t b$ converge in the row/column Hardy spaces $\mathcal H_p^r(\mathcal M)$ and $\mathcal H_p^c(\mathcal M)$ respectively. We also confirm in the continuous setting the validity of related asymmetric maximal inequalities which we recently found for discrete filtrations, including $p=1$. As for other results in noncommutative martingale theory, the passage from discrete to continuous index is quite technical and requires genuinely new methods. Our approach towards asymmetric maximal inequalities is based on certain construction of conditional expectations for a sequence of projective systems of $L_p$-modules. The convergence in $\mathcal H_p^r(\mathcal M)$ and $\mathcal H_p^c(\mathcal M)$ also imposes new algebraic atomic decompositions.

Reducing the number of inputs in nonlocal games

In this work we show how a vector-valued version of Schechtman's empirical method can be used to reduce the number of inputs in a nonlocal game $G$ while preserving the quotient $β^*(G)/β(G)$ of the quantum over the classical bias. We apply our method to the Khot-Vishnoi game, with exponentially many questions per player, to produce another game with polynomially many ($N\approx n^8$) questions so that the quantum over the classical bias is $Ω(n/\log^2 n)$.

Algebraic Davis decomposition and asymmetric Doob inequalities

In this paper we investigate asymmetric forms of Doob maximal inequality. The asymmetry is imposed by noncommutativity. Let $(\M,τ)$ be a noncommutative probability space equipped with a weak-$*$ dense filtration of von Neumann subalgebras $(\M_n)_{n \ge 1}$. Let $\E_n$ denote the corresponding family of conditional expectations. As an illustration for an asymmetric result, we prove that for $1 < p < 2$ and $x \in L_p(\M,τ)$ one can find $a, b \in L_p(\M,τ)$ and contractions $u_n, v_n \in \M$ such that $$\E_n(x) = a u_n + v_n b \quad \mbox{and} \quad \max \big\{ \|a\|_p, \|b\|_p \big\} \le c_p \|x\|_p.$$ Moreover, it turns out that $a u_n$ and $v_n b$ converge in the row/column Hardy spaces $\H_p^r(\M)$ and $\H_p^c(\M)$ respectively. In particular, this solves a problem posed by Defant and Junge in 2004. In the case $p=1$, our results establish a noncommutative form of Davis celebrated theorem on the relation between martingale maximal and square functions in $L_1$, whose noncommutative form has remained open for quite some time. Given $1 \le p \le 2$, we also provide new weak type maximal estimates, which imply in turn left/right almost uniform convergence of $\E_n(x)$ in row/column Hardy spaces. This improves the bilateral convergence known so far. Our approach is based on new forms of Davis martingale decomposition which are of independent interest, and an algebraic atomic description for the involved Hardy spaces. The latter results are new even for commutative von Neumann algebras.

Blind Recovery of Sparse Signals from Subsampled Convolution

Subsampled blind deconvolution is the recovery of two unknown signals from samples of their convolution. To overcome the ill-posedness of this problem, solutions based on priors tailored to specific application have been developed in practical applications. In particular, sparsity models have provided promising priors. However, in spite of empirical success of these methods in many applications, existing analyses are rather limited in two main ways: by disparity between the theoretical assumptions on the signal and/or measurement model versus practical setups; or by failure to provide a performance guarantee for parameter values within the optimal regime defined by the information theoretic limits. In particular, it has been shown that a naive sparsity model is not a strong enough prior for identifiability in the blind deconvolution problem. Instead, in addition to sparsity, we adopt a conic constraint, which enforces spectral flatness of the signals. Under this prior, we provide an iterative algorithm that achieves guaranteed performance in blind deconvolution at near optimal sample complexity. Numerical results show the empirical performance of the iterative algorithm agrees with the performance guarantee.

RIP-like Properties in Subsampled Blind Deconvolution

We derive near optimal performance guarantees for subsampled blind deconvolution. Blind deconvolution is an ill-posed bilinear inverse problem and additional subsampling makes the problem even more challenging. Sparsity and spectral flatness priors on unknown signals are introduced to overcome these difficulties. While being crucial for deriving desired near optimal performance guarantees, unlike the sparsity prior with a nice union-of-subspaces structure, the spectral flatness prior corresponds to a nonconvex cone structure, which is not preserved by elementary set operations. This prohibits the operator arising in subsampled blind deconvolution from satisfying the standard restricted isometry property (RIP) at near optimal sample complexity, which motivated us to study other RIP-like properties. Combined with the performance guarantees derived using these RIP-like properties in a companion paper, we show that subsampled blind deconvolution is provably solved at near optimal sample complexity by a practical algorithm.

Smooth Fourier multipliers in group algebras via Sobolev dimension

We investigate Fourier multipliers with smooth symbols defined over locally compact Hausdorff groups. Our main results in this paper establish new Hörmander-Mikhlin criteria for spectral and non-spectral multipliers. The key novelties which shape our approach are three. First, we control a broad class of Fourier multipliers by certain maximal operators in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. This general principle ---exploited in Euclidean harmonic analysis during the last 40 years--- is of independent interest and might admit further applications. Second, we replace the formerly used cocycle dimension by the Sobolev dimension. This is based on a noncommutative form of the Sobolev embedding theory for Markov semigroups initiated by Varopoulos, and yields more flexibility to measure the smoothness of the symbol. Third, we introduce a dual notion of polynomial growth to further exploit our maximal principle for non-spectral Fourier multipliers. The combination of these ingredients yields new $L_p$ estimates for smooth Fourier multipliers in group algebras.

CB-norm estimates for maps between noncommutative $L_p$-spaces and quantum channel theory

In the first part of this work we show how certain techniques from quantum information theory can be used in order to obtain very sharp embeddings between noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. Then, we use these estimates to study the classical capacity with restricted assisted entanglement of the quantum erasure channel and the quantum depolarizing channel. In particular, we exactly compute the capacity of the first one and we show that certain nonmultiplicative results hold for the second one.

Channel capacities via $p$-summing norms

In this paper we show how \emph{the metric theory of tensor products} developed by Grothendieck perfectly fits in the study of channel capacities, a central topic in \emph{Shannon's information theory}. Furthermore, in the last years Shannon's theory has been generalized to the quantum setting to let the \emph{quantum information theory} step in. In this paper we consider the classical capacity of quantum channels with restricted assisted entanglement. In particular these capacities include the classical capacity and the unlimited entanglement-assisted classical capacity of a quantum channel. To deal with the quantum case we will use the noncommutative version of $p$-summing maps. More precisely, we prove that the (product state) classical capacity of a quantum channel with restricted assisted entanglement can be expressed as the derivative of a completely $p$-summing norm.

Noncommutative Riesz transforms -- Dimension free bounds and Fourier multipliers

We obtain dimension free estimates for noncommutative Riesz transforms associated to conditionally negative length functions on group von Neumann algebras. This includes Poisson semigroups, beyond Bakry's results in the commutative setting. Our proof is inspired by Pisier's method and a new Khintchine inequality for crossed products. New estimates include Riesz transforms associated to fractional laplacians in $\mathbb{R}^n$ (where Meyer's conjecture fails) or to the word length of free groups. Lust-Piquard's work for discrete laplacians on LCA groups is also generalized in several ways. In the context of Fourier multipliers, we will prove that Hörmander-Mihlin multipliers are Littlewood-Paley averages of our Riesz transforms. This is highly surprising in the Euclidean and (most notably) noncommutative settings. As application we provide new Sobolev/Besov type smoothness conditions. The Sobolev type condition we give refines the classical one and yields dimension free constants. Our results hold for arbitrary unimodular groups.

Smooth Fourier multipliers on group von Neumann algebras

We investigate Fourier multipliers on the compact dual of arbitrary discrete groups. Our main result is a Hörmander-Mihlin multiplier theorem for finite-dimensional cocycles with optimal smoothness condition. We also find Littlewood-Paley type inequalities in group von Neumann algebras, prove $L_p$ estimates for noncommutative Riesz transforms and characterize $L_\infty \to \mathrm{BMO}$ boundedness for radial Fourier multipliers. The key novelties of our approach are to exploit group cocycles and cross products in Fourier multiplier theory in conjunction with BMO spaces associated to semigroups of operators and a noncommutative generalization of Calderón-Zygmund theory.

Some classification results for generalized q-gaussian algebras

To any trace preserving action $σ: G \curvearrowright A$ of a countable discrete group on a finite von Neumann algebra $A$ and any orthogonal representation $π:G \to \mathcal O(\ell^2_{\mathbb{R}}(G))$, we associate the generalized q-gaussian von Neumann algebra $A \rtimes_σ Γ_q^π(G,K)$, where $K$ is an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space. Specializing to the cases of $π$ being trivial or given by conjugation, we then prove that if $G \curvearrowright A = L^{\infty}(X)$, $G' \curvearrowright B = L^{\infty}(Y)$ are p.m.p. free ergodic rigid actions, the commutator subgroups $[G,G]$, $[G',G']$ are ICC, and $G, G'$ belong to a fairly large class of groups (including all non-amenable groups having the Haagerup property), then $A \rtimes Γ_q(G,K) = B \rtimes Γ_q(G',K')$ implies that $\mathcal R(G \curvearrowright A)$ is stably isomorphic to $\mathcal R(G' \curvearrowright B)$, where $\mathcal R(G \curvearrowright A), \mathcal R(G' \curvearrowright B)$ are the countable, p.m.p. equivalence relations implemented by the actions of $G$ and $G'$ on $A$ and $B$, respectively. Using results of D. Gaboriau and S. Popa we construct continuously many pair-wise non-isomorphic von Neumann algebras of the form $L^{\infty}(X) \rtimes Γ_q(\mathbb{F}_n,K)$, for suitable free ergodic rigid p.m.p. actions $\mathbb{F}_n \curvearrowright X$.

Theory of H_p-spaces for continuous filtrations in von Neumann algebras

We introduce Hardy spaces for martingales with respect to continuous filtration for von Neumann algebras. In particular we prove the analogues of the Burkholder/Gundy and Burkholder/Rosenthal inequalities in this setting. The usual arguments using stopping times in the commutative case are replaced by tools from noncommutative function theory and allow us to obtain the analogue of the Feffermann-Stein duality and prove a noncommutative Davis decomposition.

An invitation to harmonic analysis associated with semigroups of operators

This article is an introduction to our recent work in harmonic analysis associated with semigroups of operators, in the effort of finding a noncommutative Calderón-Zygmund theory for von Neumann algebras. The classical CZ theory has been traditionally developed on metric measure spaces satisfying additional regularity properties. In the lack of such metrics -or with very little information on the metric- Markov semigroups of operators appear to be the right substitutes of classical metric/geometric tools in harmonic analysis. Our approach is particularly useful in the noncommutative setting but it is also valid in classical/commutative frameworks.

Hypercontractivity for free products

In this paper, we obtain optimal time hypercontractivity bounds for the free product extension of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup acting on the Clifford algebra. Our approach is based on a central limit theorem for free products of spin matrix algebras with mixed commutation/anticommutation relations. With another use of Speicher's central limit theorem, we may also obtain the same bounds for free products of q-deformed von Neumann algebras interpolating between the fermonic and bosonic frameworks. This generalizes the work of Nelson, Gross, Carlen/Lieb and Biane. Our main application yields hypercontractivity bounds for the free Poisson semigroup acting on the group algebra of the free group Fn, uniformly in the number of generators.

Hypercontractivity in group von Neumann algebras

In this paper, we provide a combinatorial/numerical method to establish new hypercontractivity estimates in group von Neumann algebras. We will illustrate our method with free groups, triangular groups and finite cyclic groups, for which we shall obtain optimal time hypercontractive $L_2 \to L_q$ inequalities with respect to the Markov process given by the word length and with $q$ an even integer. Interpolation and differentiation also yield general $L_p \to L_q$ hypercontrativity for $1 < p \le q < \infty$ via logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. Our method admits further applications to other discrete groups without small loops as far as the numerical part ---which varies from one group to another--- is implemented and tested in a computer. We also develop another combinatorial method which does not rely on computational estimates and provides (non-optimal) $L_p \to L_q$ hypercontractive inequalities for a larger class of groups/lengths, including any finitely generated group equipped with a conditionally negative word length, like infinite Coxeter groups. Our second method also yields hypercontractivity bounds for groups admitting a finite dimensional proper cocycle. Hypercontractivity fails for conditionally negative lengths in groups satisfying Kazhdan property (T).

Noncommutative Bennett and Rosenthal inequalities

In this paper we extend the Bernstein, Prohorov and Bennett inequalities to the noncommutative setting. In addition we provide an improved version of the noncommutative Rosenthal inequality, essentially due to Nagaev, Pinelis and Pinelis, Utev for commutative random variables. We also present new best constants in Rosenthal's inequality. Applying these results to random Fourier projections, we recover and elaborate on fundamental results from compressed sensing, due to Candes, Romberg and Tao.

Noncommutative martingale deviation and Poincaré type inequalities with applications

We prove a deviation inequality for noncommutative martingales by extending Oliveira's argument for random matrices. By integration we obtain a Burkholder type inequality with satisfactory constant. Using continuous time, we establish noncommutative Poincaré type inequalities for "nice" semigroups with a positive curvature condition. These results allow us to prove a general deviation inequality and a noncommutative transportation inequality due to Bobkov and Götze in the commutative case. To demonstrate our setting is general enough, we give various examples, including certain group von Neumann algebras, random matrices and classical diffusion processes, among others.

Joint system quantum descriptions arising from local quantumness

Bipartite correlations generated by non-signalling physical systems that admit a finite-dimensional local quantum description cannot exceed the quantum limits, i.e., they can always be interpreted as distant measurements of a bipartite quantum state. Here we consider the effect of dropping the assumption of finite dimensionality. Remarkably, we find that the same result holds provided that we relax the tensor structure of space-like separated measurements to mere commutativity. We argue why an extension of this result to tensor representations seems unlikely.

Oblique Pursuits for Compressed Sensing

Compressed sensing is a new data acquisition paradigm enabling universal, simple, and reduced-cost acquisition, by exploiting a sparse signal model. Most notably, recovery of the signal by computationally efficient algorithms is guaranteed for certain randomized acquisition systems. However, there is a discrepancy between the theoretical guarantees and practical applications. In applications, including Fourier imaging in various modalities, the measurements are acquired by inner products with vectors selected randomly (sampled) from a frame. Currently available guarantees are derived using a so-called restricted isometry property (RIP), which has only been shown to hold under ideal assumptions. For example, the sampling from the frame needs to be independent and identically distributed with the uniform distribution, and the frame must be tight. In practice though, one or more of the ideal assumptions is typically violated and none of the existing guarantees applies. Motivated by this discrepancy, we propose two related changes in the existing framework: (i) a generalized RIP called the restricted biorthogonality property (RBOP); and (ii) correspondingly modified versions of existing greedy pursuit algorithms, which we call oblique pursuits. Oblique pursuits are guaranteed using the RBOP without requiring ideal assumptions; hence, the guarantees apply to practical acquisition schemes. Numerical results show that oblique pursuits also perform competitively with, or sometimes better than their conventional counterparts.

Subspace Methods for Joint Sparse Recovery

We propose robust and efficient algorithms for the joint sparse recovery problem in compressed sensing, which simultaneously recover the supports of jointly sparse signals from their multiple measurement vectors obtained through a common sensing matrix. In a favorable situation, the unknown matrix, which consists of the jointly sparse signals, has linearly independent nonzero rows. In this case, the MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) algorithm, originally proposed by Schmidt for the direction of arrival problem in sensor array processing and later proposed and analyzed for joint sparse recovery by Feng and Bresler, provides a guarantee with the minimum number of measurements. We focus instead on the unfavorable but practically significant case of rank-defect or ill-conditioning. This situation arises with limited number of measurement vectors, or with highly correlated signal components. In this case MUSIC fails, and in practice none of the existing methods can consistently approach the fundamental limit. We propose subspace-augmented MUSIC (SA-MUSIC), which improves on MUSIC so that the support is reliably recovered under such unfavorable conditions. Combined with subspace-based greedy algorithms also proposed and analyzed in this paper, SA-MUSIC provides a computationally efficient algorithm with a performance guarantee. The performance guarantees are given in terms of a version of restricted isometry property. In particular, we also present a non-asymptotic perturbation analysis of the signal subspace estimation that has been missing in the previous study of MUSIC.

A transference method in quantum probability

Working with a rather general notion of independence, we provide a transference method which allows to compare the p-norm of sums of independent copies with the p-norm of sums of free copies. Our main technique is to construct explicit operator space Lp embeddings preserving independence to reduce the problem to L1, where some recent results by the first-named author can be used. We find applications for noncommutative Khincthine/Rosenthal type inequalities and for noncommutative Lp embedding theory.

Large violation of Bell inequalities with low entanglement

In this paper we obtain violations of general bipartite Bell inequalities of order $\frac{\sqrt{n}}{\log n}$ with $n$ inputs, $n$ outputs and $n$-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Moreover, we construct explicitly, up to a random choice of signs, all the elements involved in such violations: the coefficients of the Bell inequalities, POVMs measurements and quantum states. Analyzing this construction we find that, even though entanglement is necessary to obtain violation of Bell inequalities, the Entropy of entanglement of the underlying state is essentially irrelevant in obtaining large violation. We also indicate why the maximally entangled state is a rather poor candidate in producing large violations with arbitrary coefficients. However, we also show that for Bell inequalities with positive coefficients (in particular, games) the maximally entangled state achieves the largest violation up to a logarithmic factor.

Representation of certain homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces and applications

Following Grothendieck's characterization of Hilbert spaces we consider operator spaces $F$ such that both $F$ and $F^*$ completely embed into the dual of a C*-algebra. Due to Haagerup/Musat's improved version of Pisier/Shlyakhtenko's Grothendieck inequality for operator spaces, these spaces are quotients of subspaces of the direct sum $C\oplus R$ of the column and row spaces (the corresponding class being denoted by $QS(C\oplus R)$). We first prove a representation theorem for homogeneous $F\in QS(C\oplus R)$ starting from the fundamental sequences defined by column and row norms of unit vectors. Under a mild regularity assumption on these sequences we show that they completely determine the operator space structure of $F$ and find a canonical representation of this important class of homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces in terms of weighted row and column spaces. This canonical representation allows us to get an explicit formula for the exactness constant of an $n$-dimensional subspace $F_n$ of $F$ involving the fundamental sequences. Similarly, we have formulas for the the projection (=injectivity) constant of $F_n$. They also permit us to determine the completely 1-summing maps in Effros and Ruan's sense between two homogeneous spaces $E$ and $F$ in $QS(C\oplus R)$.

Orlicz property of operator spaces and eigenvalue estimates

As is well known absolute convergence and unconditional convergence for series are equivalent only in finite dimensional Banach spaces. Replacing the classical notion of absolutely summing operators by the notion of 1 summing operators \[ \summ_k || Tx_k || \leq c || \summ_k e_k \otimes x_k ||_{\ell_1\otimes_{min}E}\] in the category of operator spaces, it turns out that there are quite different interesting examples of 1 summing operator spaces. Moreover, the eigenvalues of a composition $TS$ decreases of order $n^{\frac{1}{q}}$ for all operators $S$ factorizing completely through a commutative $C^*$-algebra if and only if the 1 summing norm of the operator $T$ restricted to a $n$-dimensional subspace is not larger than $c n^{1-\frac{1}{q}}$, provided $q>2$. This notion of 1 summing operators is closely connected to the notion of minimal and maximal operator spaces.

Type and cotype with respect to arbitrary orthonormal systems

Let $\on_{k \in \nz}$ be an orthonormal system on some $σ$-finite measure space $(\Om,p)$. We study the notion of cotype with respect to $Φ$ for an operator $T$ between two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, defined by $\fco T := \inf$ $c$ such that \[ \Tfmm \pl \le \pl c \pll \gmm \hspace{.7cm}\mbox{for all}\hspace{.7cm} (x_k)\subset X \pl,\] where $(g_k)_{k\in \nz}$ is a sequence of independent and normalized gaussian variables. It is shown that this $Φ$-cotype coincides with the usual notion of cotype $2$ iff \linebreak $\fco {I_{\lin}} \sim \sqrt{\frac{n}{\log (n+1)}}$ uniformly in $n$ iff there is a positive $η>0$ such that for all $n \in \nz$ one can find an orthonormal $Ψ= (ψ_l)_1^n \subset {\rm span}\{ ϕ_k \p|\p k \in \nz\}$ and a sequence of disjoint measurable sets $(A_l)_1^n \subset \Om$ with \[ \int\limits_{A_l} \bet ψ_l\rag^2 d p \pl \ge \pl η\quad \mbox{for all}\quad l=1,...,n \pl. \] A similar result holds for the type situation. The study of type and cotype with respect to orthonormal systems of a given length provides the appropriate approach to this result. We intend to give a quite complete picture for orthonormal systems in measure space with few atoms.

Bilinear forms on exact operator spaces and B(H)\otimes B(H)

Let $E,F$ be exact operators (For example subspaces of the $C^*$-algebra $K(H)$ of all the compact operators on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space $H$). We study a class of bounded linear maps $u\colon E\to F^*$ which we call tracially bounded. In particular, we prove that every completely bounded (in short $c.b.$) map $u\colon E\to F^*$ factors boundedly through a Hilbert space. This is used to show that the set $OS_n$ of all $n$-dimensional operator spaces equipped with the $c.b.$ version of the Banach Mazur distance is not separable if $n>2$. As an application we show that there is more than one $C^*$-norm on $B(H)\otimes B(H)$, or equivalently that $$B(H)\otimes_{\min}B(H)\not=B(H)\otimes_{\max}B(H),$$ which answers a long standing open question. Finally we show that every ``maximal" operator space (in the sense of Paulsen) is not exact in the infinite dimensional case, and in the finite dimensional case, we give a lower bound for the ``exactness constant".

Comparing gaussian and Rademacher cotype for operators on the space of continous functions

We will prove an abstract comparision principle which translates gaussian cotype in Rademacher cotype conditions and vice versa. More precisely, let $2\!<\!q\!<\!\infty$ and $T:\,C(K)\,\to\,F$ a linear, continous operator. T is of gaussian cotype q if and only if ( \summ_1^n (\frac{|| Tx_k||_F}{\sqrt{\log(k+1)}})^q )^{1/q} \, \le c || \summ_1^n \varepsilon_k x_k ||_{L_2(C(K))} , for all sequences with $(|| Tx_k ||)_1^n$ decreasing. T is of Rademacher cotype q if and only if (\summ_1^n (|| Tx_k||_F \,\sqrt{\log(k+1)})^q )^{1/q} \, \le c || \summ_1^n g_k x_k ||_{L_2(C(K))} , for all sequences with $(||Tx_k ||)_1^n$ decreasing. Our methods allows a restriction to a fixed number of vectors and complements the corresponding results of Talagrand.

Cotype and summing properties in Banach spaces

It is well known in Banach space theory that for a finite dimensional space $E$ there exists a constant $c_E$, such that for all sequences $(x_k)_k \subset E$ one has \[ \summ_k \noo x_k \rrm \kl c_E \pl \sup_{\eps_k \pm 1} \noo \summ_k \eps_k x_k \rrm \pl .\] Moreover, if $E$ is of dimension $n$ the constant $c_E$ ranges between $\sqrt{n}$ and $n$. This implies that absolute convergence and unconditional convergence only coincide in finite dimensional spaces. We will characterize Banach spaces $X$, where the constant $c_E \sim \sqrt{n}$ for all finite dimensional subspaces. More generally, we prove that an estimate $c_E \kll c n^{1-\frac{1}{q}}$holds for all $n \in \nz$ and all $n$-dimensional subspaces $E$ of $X$ if and only if the eigenvalues of every operator factoring through $\ell_{\infty}$ decrease of order $k^{-\frac{1}{q}}$ if and only if $X$ is of weak cotype $q$, introduced by Pisier and Mascioni. We emphasize that in contrast to Talagrand's equivalence theorem on cotype $q$ and absolutely $(q,1)$-summing spaces this extendsto the case $q=2$. If $q>2$ and one of the conditions above is satisfied one has \[ \kla \summ_k \noo x_k \rrm^q \mer^{\frac{1}{q}} \kl C^{1+l}\pl (1+{\rm log}_2)^{(l)}((1 +{\rm log}_2 n)^{\frac{1}{q}}) \pl \ez \noo \summ_k \eps_k x_k \rrm \] for all $n,l \in \nz$ and $(x_k)_k \subset E$, $E$ a $n$ dimensional subspace of $X$. In the case $q=2$ the same holds if we replace the expected value by the supremum.

How many vectors are needed to compute (p,q)-summing norms?

We will show that for $q<p$ there exists an $\al < \infty$ such that \[ π_{pq}(T) \pl \le c_{pq} π_{pq}^{[n^α]}(T) \mbox{for all $T$ of rank $n$.}\] Such a polynomial number is only possible if $q=2$ or $q<p$. Furthermore, the growth rate is linear if $q=2$ or $\frac{1}{q}-\frac{1}{p}>\frac{1}{2}$. Unless $\frac{1}{q}-\frac{1}{p}=\frac{1}{2}$ this is also a necessary condition .

Proportional subspaces of spaces with unconditional basis have good volume properties

A generalization of Lozanovskii's result is proved. Let E be $k$-dimensional subspace of an $n$-dimensional Banach space with unconditional basis. Then there exist $x_1,..,x_k \subset E$ such that $B_E \p \subset \p absconv\{x_1,..,x_k\}$ and \[ \kla \frac{{\rm vol}(absconv\{x_1,..,x_k\})}{{\rm vol}(B_E)} \mer^{\frac{1}{k}} \kl \kla e\p \frac{n}{k} \mer^2 \pl .\] This answers a question of V. Milman which appeared during a GAFA seminar talk about the hyperplane problem. We add logarithmical estimates concerning the hyperplane conjecture for proportional subspaces and quotients of Banach spaces with unconditional basis. File Length:27K
