Deep Depth Completion from Extremely Sparse Data: A Survey

Depth completion aims at predicting dense pixel-wise depth from an extremely sparse map captured from a depth sensor, e.g., LiDARs. It plays an essential role in various applications such as autonomous driving, 3D reconstruction, augmented reality, and robot navigation. Recent successes on the task have been demonstrated and dominated by deep learning based solutions. In this article, for the first time, we provide a comprehensive literature review that helps readers better grasp the research trends and clearly understand the current advances. We investigate the related studies from the design aspects of network architectures, loss functions, benchmark datasets, and learning strategies with a proposal of a novel taxonomy that categorizes existing methods. Besides, we present a quantitative comparison of model performance on three widely used benchmarks, including indoor and outdoor datasets. Finally, we discuss the challenges of prior works and provide readers with some insights for future research directions.

Jump and variational inequalities for rough operators

In this paper, we systematically study jump and variational inequalities for rough operators, whose research have been initiated by Jones {\it et al}. More precisely, we show some jump and variational inequalities for the families $\mathcal T:=\{T_\varepsilon\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ of truncated singular integrals and $\mathcal M:=\{M_t\}_{t>0}$ of averaging operators with rough kernels, which are defined respectively by $$ T_\varepsilon f(x)=\int_{|y|>\varepsilon}\frac{Ω(y')}{|y|^n}f(x-y)dy $$ and $$M_t f(x)=\frac1{t^n}\int_{|y|<t}Ω(y')f(x-y)dy, $$ where the kernel $Ω$ belongs to $L\log^+\!\!L(\mathbf S^{n-1})$ or $H^1(\mathbf S^{n-1})$ or $\mathcal{G}_α(\mathbf S^{n-1})$ (the condition introduced by Grafakos and Stefanov). Some of our results are sharp in the sense that the underlying assumptions are the best known conditions for the boundedness of corresponding maximal operators.

Vector-valued Hilbert transforms along curves

In this paper, we show that Hilbert transforms along some curves are bounded on $L^p({\mathbb R}^n;X)$ for some $1<p<\infty$ and some UMD spaces $X$. In particular, we prove that the Hilbert transform along some curves are completely $L^p$-bounded in the terminology from operator space theory. Moreover, we obtain the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n;X)$-boundedness of anisotropic singular integrals by using the "method of rotations" of Calderón-Zygmund. All these results extend the existing related ones.

Ship Detection and Segmentation using Image Correlation

There have been intensive research interests in ship detection and segmentation due to high demands on a wide range of civil applications in the last two decades. However, existing approaches, which are mainly based on statistical properties of images, fail to detect smaller ships and boats. Specifically, known techniques are not robust enough in view of inevitable small geometric and photometric changes in images consisting of ships. In this paper a novel approach for ship detection is proposed based on correlation of maritime images. The idea comes from the observation that a fine pattern of the sea surface changes considerably from time to time whereas the ship appearance basically keeps unchanged. We want to examine whether the images have a common unaltered part, a ship in this case. To this end, we developed a method - Focused Correlation (FC) to achieve robustness to geometric distortions of the image content. Various experiments have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The Volume Rule in the Random Packing Ratio

The study on the relationship between the spheres and voids in packing system suggests that the edge effect at the interface between the container and the particles is an important factor lowering the packing ratio. To pack spheres in a container with high packing ratio, an optimized sphere size and an optimized sequence of sphere sizes exist for the packing of single-sized and multi-sized spheres, respectively. We suggest that the concepts of volume and contact should be clearly defined for the packing problem in specific scale.
