New opportunities for rare charm from $Z\to c\bar{c}$ decays

We analyze the potential of rare charm decays as probes of new physics at a high-luminosity flavor facility operating at the $Z$ pole, such as the FCC-ee or CEPC. In particular, we identify clean null-test observables in $D^0 \to π^+ π^- ν\barν$ and in polarized $Λ_c^+ \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays with $\ell=e, μ$. Complementarity with the LHC and HL-LHC flavor programs arises from the characteristic features of a Tera-$Z$ environment: the capability to study missing-energy modes and charm production with significant polarization. We improve the theoretical description of $D^0 \to π^+ π^- ν\barν$ decays and work out the phenomenology of polarization-induced null-test observables in $Λ_c^+ \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays. In regions of dilepton mass near the $ϕ$ resonance, polarization asymmetries can reach $O(5 \%)$ for muons and $O(14 \%)$ for electrons times the $Λ_c^+$ polarization. We also point out synergies between the dineutrino and the dilepton modes using the SMEFT framework of heavy new physics. Using the IDEA detector concept at FCC-ee, we find in simulation studies that dineutrino branching fractions as low as $\sim 2 \times 10^{-7}$ can be probed, which reaches well into the parameter space of new physics, and also allows for discrimination of lepton flavor structures. Furthermore, the measurement of asymmetries in $Λ_c^+ \to p μ^+ μ^-$ at $O(1 \%)$ will be possible. Similar sensitivities are expected for dielectron final states, although robust predictions will require further dedicated studies.

B-Anomalies from flavorful U(1)' extensions, safely

$U(1)^\prime$ extensions of the standard model with generation-dependent couplings to quarks and leptons are investigated as an explanation of anomalies in rare $B$-decays, with an emphasis on stability and predictivity up to the Planck scale. To these ends, we introduce three generations of vector-like standard model singlet fermions, an enlarged, flavorful scalar sector, and, possibly, right-handed neutrinos, all suitably charged under the $U(1)^\prime$ gauge interaction. We identify several gauge-anomaly free benchmarks consistent with $B_s$-mixing constraints, with hints for electron-muon universality violation, and the global $b \to s$ fit. We further investigate the complete two-loop running of gauge, Yukawa and quartic couplings up to the Planck scale to constrain low-energy parameters and enhance the predictive power. A characteristic of models is that the $Z^\prime$ with TeV-ish mass predominantly decays to invisibles, i.e. new fermions or neutrinos. $Z^\prime$-production can be studied at a future muon collider. While benchmarks feature predominantly left-handed couplings $C_9^μ$ and $C_{10}^μ$, right-handed ones can be accommodated as well.

Lepton universality and lepton flavor conservation tests with dineutrino modes

$SU(2)_L$-invariance links charged dilepton and dineutrino couplings. Phenomenological implications are worked out for flavor changing neutral currents involving strange, charm, beauty and top quark transitions in a model-independent way. We put forward novel tests of lepton universality and lepton flavor conservation in $|Δc|= |Δu|=1$ and $|Δb|= |Δq|=1$, $q=d,s$, transitions suitable for the experiments Belle II and BES III. Single top production plus dileptons uniquely probes semileptonic four-fermion $|Δt|= |Δq'|=1$, $q'=u,c$, couplings and further study at the LHC is encouraged. Tests with single top production associated with dileptons and missing energy are suitable for study at future $e^+ e^-$ or muon colliders.

Null test BSM searches with rare charm baryon decays

Rare $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu \vert=1$ processes uniquely probe flavor in the Standard Model and beyond from the up-type quark sector. Opportunities to search for BSM physics in charm arise from the severe GIM suppression which kills SM contributions to leptonic axial-vector contributions and suppresses CP violation. Semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons offer a variety of clean null test observables, featuring new physics effects which are even enhanced by resonance contributions. In particular, angular observables in three- and self-analyzing four-body baryon decays, such as $Λ_c\to p \ell^+\ell^-$ and $Ξ_c^+\toΣ^+(\to pπ^0)\ell^+\ell^-$, $Ξ_c^0\toΛ^0\,(\to p π^-)\ell^+\ell^-$ and $Ω_c^0\toΞ^0\,(\to Λ^{0} π^0)\ell^+\ell^-$ disentangle possible new physics effects in electromagnetic dipole couplings $C_7^{(\prime)}$ and (axial-)vector 4-fermion ones $C^{(\prime)}_{9\,(10)}$. There is sensitivity to BSM couplings as small as $\sim 0.01$.

Pinning down $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ couplings with rare charm baryon decays

We study the full angular distribution of semileptonic rare charm baryon decays in which the secondary baryon undergoes weak decay with sizable polarization parameter, $Ξ_c^+\toΣ^+\,(\to pπ^0)\ell^+\ell^-$, $Ξ_c^0\toΛ^0\,(\to p π^-)\ell^+\ell^-$ and $Ω_c^0\toΞ^0\,(\to Λ^{0} π^0)\ell^+\ell^-$. Such self-analyzing decay chains allow for seven additional observables compared to three-body decays such as $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, with different sensitivities to the $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ weak couplings. Opportunities to test the standard model in $c \to u$ transitions with standard model null tests and other angular observables are worked out. We show that a joint model-independent analysis of the leptonic $A_{\text{FB}}^\ell$, hadronic $A_{\text{FB}}^{\text{H}}$, and combined forward-backward asymmetry $A_{\text{FB}}^{\ell\text{H}}$ together with the fraction of longitudinally produced leptons, $F_L$, is able to pin down the dipole couplings $C_{7},C^\prime_{7}$ and the semileptonic (axial-) vector ones $C_{10},C^\prime_{9},C^\prime_{10}$. $A_{\text{FB}}^{\text{H}}$ is also accessible with dineutrino $c \to u ν\bar ν$ modes and probes right-handed currents.

Probing for New Physics with Rare Charm Baryon ($Λ_c$, $Ξ_c$, $Ω_c$) Decays

We analyze rare charm baryon decays within the standard model and beyond. We identify all null test observables in unpolarized $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e, μ$ decays, and study the new physics sensitivities. We find that the longitudinal dilepton polarization fraction $F_L$ is sensitive to electromagnetic dipole couplings $C_{7}^{(\prime)}$, and to the right-handed 4-fermion vector coupling $C_{9}^\prime$. The forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{\rm FB}$, due to the GIM-suppression a standard model null test already, probes the left-handed axialvector 4-fermion coupling $C_{10}$; its CP-asymmetry, $A_{\rm FB}^{\rm CP}$, probes CP-violating phases in $C_{10}$. Physics beyond the standard model can induce branching ratios of dineutrino modes $Λ_c \to p ν\bar ν$ up to a few times $10^{-5}$, and one order of magnitude smaller if lepton flavor universality is assumed, while standard model rates are negligible. Charged lepton flavor violation allows for striking signals into $e^\pm μ^\mp$ final states, up to $10^{-6}$ branching ratios model-independently, and up to order $10^{-8}$ in leptoquark models. Related three-body baryon decays $Ξ_c \to Σ\ell \ell$, $Ξ_c \to Λ\ell \ell$ and $Ω_c \to Ξ\ell \ell$ offer similar opportunities to test the standard model with $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ transitions.

Rare radiative decays of charm baryons

We study weak radiative $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ decays of the charmed anti-triplett ($Λ_c$, $Ξ_c^{+}$, $Ξ_c^{0}$) and sextet ($Σ_c^{++}$, $Σ_c^+$, $Σ_c^0$, $Ξ_c^{\prime +}$, $Ξ_c^{\prime 0}$, $Ω_c$) baryons in the standard model (SM) and beyond. We work out $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)_F$-symmetry relations. We propose to study self-analyzing decay chains such as $Ξ_c^+ \to Σ^+ (\to p π^0) γ$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to Λ(\to p π^-) γ$, which enable new physics sensitive polarization studies. SM contributions can be controlled by corresponding analysis of the Cabibbo-favored decays $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ (\to p π^0) γ$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^0 (\to Λπ^0) γ$. Further tests of the SM are available with initially polarized baryons including $Λ_c \to p γ$ together with $Λ_c \to Σ^+ γ$ decays, or $Ω_c \to Ξ^0 γ$ together with $Ω_c \to (Λ,Σ^0) γ$. In addition, CP-violating new physics contributions to dipole operators can enhance CP-asymmetries up to few percent.

Radiative three-body D-meson decays in and beyond the standard model

We study radiative charm decays $D \to P_1 P_2 γ$, $P_{1,2}=π,K$ in QCD factorization at leading order and within heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. Branching ratios including resonance contributions are around $\sim 10^{-3}$ for the Cabibbo-favored modes into $K πγ$ and $\sim 10^{-5}$ for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed modes into $π^+ π^- γ, K^+ K^- γ$, and thus in reach of the flavor factories BES III and Belle II. Dalitz plots and forward-backward asymmetries reveal significant differences between the two QCD frameworks; such observables are therefore ideally suited for a data-driven identification of relevant decay mechanisms in the standard-model dominated $D \to K πγ$ decays. This increases the potential to probe new physics with the $D \to π^+ π^- γ$ and $D \to K^+ K^- γ$ decays, which are sensitive to enhanced dipole operators. CP asymmetries are useful to test the SM and look for new physics in neutral $|ΔC|=1$ transitions. Cuts in the Dalitz plot enhance the sensitivity to new physics due to the presence of both $s$- and $t,u$-channel intermediate resonances.

Rare charm $\boldsymbol{c\to u\,ν\barν}$ dineutrino null tests for $\boldsymbol{e^+e^-}$-machines

Rare $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ transitions into dineutrinos are strongly GIM-suppressed and constitute excellent null tests of the standard model. While branching ratios of $D \to P \,ν\bar ν$, $D \to P^+ P^- \, ν\bar ν$, $P=π, K$, baryonic $Λ_c^+ \to p \,ν\bar ν$, and $Ξ_c^+ \to Σ^+ \, ν\bar ν$ and inclusive $D \to X ν\bar ν$ decays are experimentally unconstrained, signals of new physics can be just around the corner. We provide model-independent upper limits on branching ratios reaching few $\times 10^{-5}$ in the most general case of arbitrary lepton flavor structure, $\sim 10^{-5}$ for scenarios with charged lepton conservation and few $\times 10^{-6}$ assuming lepton universality. We also give upper limits in $Z^\prime$ and leptoquark models. The presence of light right-handed neutrinos can affect these limits, a possibility that can occur for lepton number violation at a TeV, and that can be excluded with an improved bound on $\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to \text{invisibles})$ at the level of $\sim 10^{-6}$, about two orders of magnitude better than the present one. Signatures of $c \to u ν\bar ν$ modes contain missing energy and are suited for experimental searches at $e^+ e^-$-facilities, such as BES III, Belle II and future $e^+ e^-$-colliders, such as the FCC-ee running at the $Z$.

The New Physics Reach of Null Tests with $D \to π\ell \ell$ and $D_s \to K \ell \ell $ Decays

$|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ processes are unique probes of flavor physics in the up-sector within and beyond the Standard Model (SM). SM tests with rare semileptonic charm meson decays are based on an approximate CP--symmetry, a superior GIM--mechanism, angular distributions, lepton-universality and lepton flavor conservation. We analyze the complete set of null test observables in $D \to π\ell \ell^{(\prime)}$ and $D_s \to K \ell \ell^{(\prime)}$ decays, $\ell^{(\prime)}=e, μ$, and find large room for new physics safely above the SM contribution. We identify signatures of supersymmetry, leptoquarks and anomaly-free $U(1)^\prime$-models with generation-dependent charges, for which we provide explicit examples. $Z^\prime$-effects in $c \to u \ell \ell^{(\prime)}$ transitions can be sizable if both left-handed and right-handed couplings to quarks are present.

Constraining top-quark couplings combining top-quark and $\boldsymbol{B}$ decay observables

We present a first, consistent combination of measurements from top-quark and $B$ physics to constrain top-quark properties within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of this approach and detail the ingredients required for a proper combination of observables from different energy scales. Specifically, we employ measurements of the $t\bar tγ$ cross section together with measurements of the $\bar B\rightarrow X_sγ$ branching fraction to test the Standard Model and look for new physics contributions to the couplings of the top quark to the gauge bosons within SMEFT. We perform fits of three Wilson coefficients of dimension-six operators considering only the individual observables as well as their combination to demonstrate how the complementarity between top-quark and $B$ physics observables allows to resolve ambiguities and significantly improves the constraints on the Wilson coefficients. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is found with present data.

Correlating uncertainties in global analyses within SMEFT matters

We investigate the impact of correlations between (theoretical and experimental) uncertainties on multi-experiment, multi-observable analyses within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). To do so, we perform a model-independent analysis of $t$-channel single top-quark production and top-quark decay data from ATLAS, CMS, CDF and D0. We show quantitatively how the fit changes when different experimental or theoretical correlations are assumed. Scaling down statistical uncertainties according to the luminosities of future colliders with $300 \, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ and higher, we find that this effect becomes a matter of life and death: assuming no correlations returns a fit in agreement with the Standard Model while a 'best guess'-ansatz taking into account correlations would observe new physics. At the same time, modelling the impact of higher order SMEFT-corrections the latter turn out to be a subleading source of uncertainty only.

Exploiting CP-asymmetries in rare charm decays

We analyze patterns from CP-violating new physics (NP) in hadronic and semileptonic rare charm $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu\vert=1$ transitions. Observation of direct CP-violation in hadronic decays, as in $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$, provides opportunities for $c \to u \,\ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e,μ$ transitions, and vice versa. For the concrete case of flavorful, anomaly-free $Z^\prime$-models a NP-interpretation of $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$ suggests measurable CP-asymmetries in semileptonic decays such as $D \to π\, \ell^+ \ell^-$ or $D \to ππ\, \ell^+ \ell^-$. Conversely, an observation of CP-violation in $c \to u\, e^+ e^-$ or $c \to u\, μ^+ μ^-$ decays supports a NP--interpretation of $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$. Flavorful $U(1)^\prime$-extensions provide explicit U--spin and isospin breaking which can be probed in patterns of hadronic decays of charm mesons. We work out signatures for CP-asymmetries in $D^0 \to π^+ π^-$, $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^0 π^0$, $D^+ \to π^+ π^0$ decays, which can be probed in the future at LHCb and Belle II and provide further informative cross checks.

Multi-lepton signatures of vector-like leptons with flavor

We investigate collider signatures of standard model extensions featuring vector-like leptons and a flavorful scalar sector. Such a framework arises naturally within asymptotically safe model building, which tames the UV behavior of the standard model towards the Planck scale and beyond. We focus on values of Yukawa couplings and masses which allow to explain the present data on the muon and electron anomalous magnetic moments. Using a CMS search based on $77.4 \, \rm{fb}^{-1}$ at the $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV LHC we find that flavorful vector-like leptons are excluded for masses below around $300$ GeV if they are singlets under $SU(2)_L$, and around $800$ GeV if they are doublets. Exploiting the flavor-violating-like decays of the scalars, we design novel null test observables based on opposite sign opposite flavor invariant masses. These multi-lepton distributions allow to signal new physics and to extract mass hierarchies in reach of near-future searches at the LHC and the HL-LHC.

$B \to K^* \ell \ell$ Standard Model contributions -- Zooming in on high $q^2$

To further precision studies with $B \to K^{(*)} \ell \ell$ decays in the high-$q^2$ window uncertainties related to the operator product expansion (OPE) need to be scrutinized. How well can the OPE describe $B \to K^* (\to K π) \ell \ell$ angular distributions for a given binning in view of the local charm resonance structure? We present a data-driven method to access this quantitatively. Our analysis suggests that the bins which are near the kinematic endpoint are best described by the OPE and should be pursued for precision studies. At the same time measurements with finer binning help controlling the uncertainties.

Flavor & new physics opportunities with rare charm decays into leptons

Updated standard model predictions for $D_{(s)} \to P l^+ l^-$, $l=e,μ$, $P=π,K$ and inclusive decays are presented. Model-independent constraints on $|ΔC|=|ΔU|=1$ Wilson coefficients are worked out. New physics (NP) opportunities arise in semileptonic branching ratios for very large couplings only, however, are not excluded outside the resonance regions yet. The NP potential of resonance-assisted CP asymmetries and angular observables is worked out. Predictions are given for leptoquark models, and include lepton flavor violating and dineutrino decays. Whether NP can be seen depends on flavor patterns, and vice versa.

General Analysis of B -> K^(*) l^+ l^- Decays at Low Recoil

We analyze the angular distributions of B -> K^* (-> K pi) l^+ l^- and B -> K l^+ l^- decays in the region of low hadronic recoil in a model-independent way by taking into account the complete set of dimension-six operators [sbar Gamma b][lbar Gamma' l]. We obtain several novel low-recoil observables with high sensitivity to non-standard-model Dirac structures, including CP-asymmetries which do not require flavor tagging. The transversity observables H_T^(1,3,4,5) are found to be insensitive to hadronic matrix elements and their uncertainties even when considering the complete set of operators. In the most general scenario we show that the low recoil operator product expansion can be probed at the few-percent level using the angular observable J_7. Higher sensitivities are possible assuming no tensor contributions, specifically by testing the low-recoil relation |H_T^(1)|=1. We explicitly demonstrate the gain in reach of the low-recoil observables in accessing the ratio |C_9/C_10| compared to the forward-backward asymmetry, and probing CP-violating right-handed currents Im C_10'. We give updated Standard Model predictions for key observables in B -> K^(*) l^+ l^- decays.

Leptoquark Flavor Patterns & B Decay Anomalies

Flavor symmetries that explain masses and mixings of the standard model fermions dictate flavor patterns for the couplings of scalar and vector leptoquarks to the standard model fermions. A generic feature is that couplings to $SU(2)$-doublet leptons are suppressed at least by one spurion of the discrete non-abelian symmetry breaking, responsible for neutrino mixing, while couplings to charged lepton singlets can be order one. We obtain testable patterns including those that predominantly couple to a single lepton flavor, or two, or in a skewed way. They induce lepton non-universality, which we contrast to current anomalies in $B$-decays. We find maximal effects in $R_{D}$ and $R_{D^*}$ at the level of $\sim$10 percent and few percent, respectively, while leptoquark effects in $R_{K^{(*)}}$ can reach order few$\times 10$ percent. Predictions for charm and kaon decays and $μ-e$ conversion are worked out.

B->Kπll in and outside the K* window

We study the impact of B->Kpill decays on B->K*(->Kpi)ll, taking into account the K* at finite width. Interference effects can generically be sizable, up to O(10%), but are reduced in several ratios of observables of the angular distribution. Information on strong phases is central to control interference effects, which cannot be removed by sideband subtractions. We point out ways to probe the strong phases; only a single one is required to describe leading effects in the region of low hadronic recoil. We find that recent LHCb data on the B0->K*0mumu angular observables at low recoil are in good agreement with the standard model.

Clues for flavor from rare lepton and quark decays

Flavor symmetries successfully explain lepton and quark masses and mixings yet it is usually hard to distinguish different models that predict the same mixing angles. Further experimental input could be available, if the agents of flavor breaking are sufficiently low in mass and detectable or if new physics with non-trivial flavor charges is sufficiently low in mass and detectable. The recent hint for lepton-nonuniversality in the ratio of branching fractions $B \to K μμ$ over $B \to K e e$, $R_K$, suggests the latter, at least for indirect detection via rare decays. We demonstrate the discriminating power of the rare decay data on flavor model building taking into account viable leptonic mixings and show how correlations with other observables exist in leptoquark models. We give expectations for branching ratios $B \to K \ell \ell^\prime, B_{(s)} \to \ell \ell^\prime$ and $\ell \to \ell^\prime γ$, and Higgs decays $h \to \ell \ell^\prime$.

Diagnosing lepton-nonuniversality in $b \to s \ell \ell$

Ratios of branching fractions of semileptonic B decays, $(B \to H μμ)$ over $(B \to H ee)$ with $H=K, K^*,X_s, K_0(1430), ϕ, \ldots$ are sensitive probes of lepton universality. In the Standard Model, the underlying flavor changing neutral current process $b\rightarrow s \ell \ell$ is lepton flavor universal. However models with new flavor violating physics above the weak scale can give substantial non-universal contributions. The leading contributions from such new physics can be parametrized by effective dimension six operators involving left- or right-handed quarks. We show that in the double ratios $R_{X_s}/R_K$, $R_{K^*}/R_K$ and $R_ϕ/R_K$ the dependence on new physics coupling to left-handed quarks cancels out. Thus a measurement of any of these double ratios is a clean probe of flavor nonuniversal physics coupling to right-handed quarks. We also point out that the observables $R_{X_s}$, $R_{K^*}$, $R_{K_0(1430)}$ and $R_ϕ$ depend on the same combination of Wilson coefficients and therefore satisfy simple consistency relations.

(A)symmetries of weak decays at and near the kinematic endpoint

At the kinematic endpoint of zero recoil physical momenta are parallel which leads to symmetries in the decay distributions. We implement this observation for decays of the type $A \to (B_1 B_2) C$ by extending the helicity formalism to include an unphysical timelike polarisation. The symmetries of the helicity amplitudes are worked out for a generic dimension six Hamiltonian for a $B \to V \ell \ell$ decay type. We obtain \emph{exact} predictions for angular observables, e.g.,for the fraction of longitudinally polarized vector mesons, $F_L = 1/3$, which may be used to guide experimental analyses. We investigate the vicinity of the endpoint through an expansion in the three momentum of the vector meson. New physics can be searched for in the slope of the observables near the endpoint. Current experimental data on $B \to K^* \ell \ell$ decays are found to be in agreement with our predictions within uncertainties. Application to other semileptonic $B$ and $D$ decays, including $B \to V \ell^+ \ell^-$, $V=K^*,ϕ, ρ$ and $B \to V \ell ν$, $V=ρ,D^*$ is straightforward. For hadronic modes of the types $B \to V p \bar p, V Λ\bar Λ, ..$ and $B \to V ππ, V πK, .. $ endpoint relations apply as long as they are not overwhelmed by sizeable final state interactions between the $V$ and the hadron pair.

$R_K$ and future $b \to s \ell \ell$ BSM opportunities

Flavor changing neutral current $|ΔB|=|ΔS|=1$ processes are sensitive to possible new physics at the electroweak scale and beyond, providing detailed information about flavor, chirality and Lorentz structure. Recently the LHCb collaboration announced a $2.6 σ$ deviation in the measurement of $R_K={\cal{B}}(\bar B \to \bar K μμ)/{\cal{B}}(\bar B \to \bar K ee)$ from the standard model's prediction of lepton universality. We identify dimension six operators which could explain this deviation and study constraints from other measurements. Vector and axial-vector four-fermion operators with flavor structure $\bar s b \bar \ell \ell$ can provide a good description of the data. Tensor operators cannot describe the data. Pseudo-scalar and scalar operators only fit the data with some fine-tuning; they can be further probed with the $\bar B \to \bar K ee$ angular distribution. The data appears to point towards $C_9^{\rm NP μ} = -C_{10}^{\rm NP μ}<0$, an $SU(2)_{L}$ invariant direction in parameter space supported by $R_K$, the $\bar B \to \bar K^* μμ$ forward-backward asymmetry and the $\bar B_s \to μμ$ branching ratio, which is currently allowed to be smaller than the standard model prediction. We present two leptoquark models which can explain the FCNC data and give predictions for the LHC and rare decays.

B -> K^* Form Factors from Flavor Data to QCD and Back

Sufficient control of transition form factors is a vital ingredient for the precision flavor programs including the nearer term searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the forthcoming Belle II experiment. We improve on existing methods to extract B -> K^* form factor ratios at low hadronic recoil from B -> K^* l^+ l^- data on the angular observables F_L, A_T^(2) and P'_4 by adding heavy quark symmetry-based constraints and by investigating the cross talk between low and large recoil. The data-extracted form factor ratios i) provide benchmarks for the lattice and light cone sum rule predictions, the latter of which have been updated including improved uncertainty estimations and ii) allow to improve the predictions for benchmark observables. We find that present data on the forward-backward asymmetry A_FB and the angular observable P'_5 at low recoil are in good agreement with the Standard Model.

The $\bar B \to \bar K π\ell \ell$ and $\bar B_s \to \bar K K \ell \ell$ distributions at low hadronic recoil

The rare multi-body decays B->K pi ll and B_s->K K ll are both important as backgrounds to precision analyses in the benchmark modes B->K* ll and B_s->phi ll as well as sensitive probes of flavor physics in and beyond the standard model. We work out non-resonant contributions to B->K pi ll and B_s->K K ll amplitudes, where l=e,mu, at low hadronic recoil in a model-independent way. Using the operator product expansion in 1/m_b, we present expressions for the full angular distribution. The latter allows to probe new combinations of |Delta B|=|Delta S|=1 couplings and gives access to strong phases between non-resonant and resonant contributions. Exact endpoint relations between transversity amplitudes based on Lorentz invariance are obtained. Several phenomenological distributions including those from the angular projections to the S-, P-, D-waves are given. Standard model branching ratios for non-resonant B->K pi ll and B_s->K K ll decays are found to be in the few 10^{-8} region, but drop significantly if cuts around the K* or phi mass are employed. Nevertheless, the non-resonant contributions to B->K pi ll provide the dominant background in the B->K* ll signal region with respect to the low mass scalars. In B_s->K K ll, the narrowness of the phi allows for more efficient background control. We briefly discuss lepton-flavor non-universal effects, also in view of the recent data on R_K.

B -> K(*) l+ l- @ Low Recoil and Physics Implications

This talk covers recent theoretical progress in exclusive semileptonic rare B-decays at low hadronic recoil. The efficient parametric suppression of the 1/mb corrections in this region provides opportunities to probe the Standard Model and beyond at precision level. Notably, angular analysis allows to simultaneously access electroweak flavor physics and hadronic matrix elements, the latter of which constitute the leading source of theoretical uncertainty. Ratios of B ->K* form factors can already be extracted from present data. A comparison with existing theoretical determinations by lattice QCD and light cone sum rules gives a consistent picture over the whole kinematic range. In the future improved analyses will advance our understanding of non-perturbative methods for QCD and of |Delta B|=1 transitions.

SU(3)-Flavor Anatomy of Non-Leptonic Charm Decays

We perform a comprehensive SU(3)-flavor analysis of charmed mesons decaying to two pseudoscalar SU(3)-octet mesons. Taking into account SU(3)-breaking effects induced by the splitting of the quark masses, m_s != m_{u,d}, we find that existing data can be described by SU(3)-breaking of the order 30%. The requisite penguin enhancement to accomodate all data on CP violation tends to be even larger than the one extracted from Delta a_{CP}^{dir}(K^+K^-,pi^+pi^-) alone, strengthening explanations beyond the standard model. Despite the large number of matrix elements, correlations between CP asymmetries allow potentially to differentiate between different scenarios for the underlying dynamics, as well as between the standard model and various extensions characterized by SU(3) symmetry and its subgroups. We investigate how improved measurements of the direct CP asymmetries in singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays can further substantiate the interpretation of the data. We show that particularly informative are the asymmetries in D->pi^+pi^- versus D->K^+K^-, D_s->K_S pi^+ versus D^+->K_S K^+, D^+->pi^+ pi^0, D->pi^0pi^0, and D->K_S K_S.

SU(3)F in nonleptonic charm decays

We present updated results of an SU(3)-flavor analysis of D->P P decay data including linear breaking and no further assumptions. The global fit is consistent with nominal (~ 30%) SU(3)F breaking and returns enhanced penguin (triplet) contributions. Their size is driven, in addition to Delta A_{CP}, by the CP asymmetries of D_0->K_S K_S, D_s->K_S pi^+ and D_s->K^+ pi^0 decays. It is therefore especially important to improve these measurements.

Squark Flavor Implications from B --> K(*) l+ l-

Recent experimental and theoretical progress regarding B --> K(*) l+ l- decays led to improved bounds on the Wilson coefficients C_9 and C_10 of four-fermion operators of the |Delta B|=|Delta S|=1 effective Hamiltonian. We analyze the resulting implications on squark flavor violation in the MSSM and obtain new constraints on flavor-changing left-right mixing in the up-squark-sector. We find the dimensionless flavor mixing parameter (delta^u_23)_LR, depending on the flavor-diagonal MSSM masses and couplings, to be as low as \lesssim 0.1. This has implications for models based on radiative flavor violation and leads to BR(B_s --> mu+ mu-) \gtrsim 1 x 10^-9. Rare top decays t --> c gamma, t --> c g, t --> c Z have branching ratios predicted to be below \lesssim few times 10^-8, 10^-6 and 10^-7, respectively.

Supersymmetric ΔA_{CP}

There is experimental evidence for a direct CP asymmetry in singly Cabibbo suppressed D decays, ΔA_{CP} \sim 0.006. Naive expectations are that the Standard Model contribution to ΔA_{CP} is an order of magnitude smaller. We explore the possibility that a major part of the symmetry comes from supersymmetric contributions. The leading candidates are models where the flavor structure of the trilinear scalar couplings is related to the structure of the Yukawa couplings via approximate flavor symmetries, particularly U(1), [U(1)]^2 and U(2). The recent hints for a lightest neutral Higgs boson with mass around 125 GeV support the requisite order one trilinear terms. The typical value of the supersymmetric contribution to the asymmetry is ΔA_{CP}^{SUSY}\sim 0.001, but it could be accidentally enhanced by order one coefficients.

Angular analysis of B --> V (--> P_1 P_2) l^+ l^- decays

The angular analysis of exclusive rare B-meson decays via intermediate vector mesons V into 4-body final states of two pseudo-scalars P_1, P_2 and a pair of light leptons l = e, mu offers a large set of observables. They can be used to test the electroweak short-distance couplings in the Standard Model and to search for New Physics. The two kinematic regions of low and high dilepton mass depend on short-distance physics in complementary ways and can be expanded in powers of Lambda_QCD/m_b. These expansions guide towards suitable combinations of observables allowing to i) reduce the hadronic uncertainties in the extraction of the short-distance couplings or ii) test the lattice QCD (B -> V) form factors in short-distance independent combinations. Several such possibilities of CP-averaged and CP-asymmetric (T-even and T-odd) quantities are presented for B_d^0 --> K^*0 (-> K pi) l^+ l^- and time-integrated CP-asymmetries without tagging for (anti-B_s, B_s) --> phi (--> K^- K^+) l^+ l^- decays in view of the latest B-factory and CDF results and the forthcoming LHCb measurements.

Flavorful hybrid anomaly-gravity mediation

We consider supersymmetric models where anomaly and gravity mediation give comparable contributions to the soft terms and discuss how this can be realized in a five-dimensional brane world. The gaugino mass pattern of anomaly mediation is preserved in such a hybrid setup. The flavorful gravity-mediated contribution cures the tachyonic slepton problem of anomaly mediation. The supersymmetric flavor puzzle is solved by alignment. We explicitly show how a working flavor-tachyon link can be realized with Abelian flavor symmetries and give the characteristic signatures of the framework, including O(1) slepton mass splittings between different generations and between doublets and singlets. This provides opportunities for same flavor dilepton edge measurements with missing energy at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Rare lepton decay rates could be close to their current experimental limit. Compared to pure gravity mediation, the hybrid model is advantageous because it features a heavy gravitino which can avoid the cosmological gravitino problem of gravity-mediated models combined with leptogenesis.

More Benefits of Semileptonic Rare B Decays at Low Recoil: CP Violation

We present a systematic analysis of the angular distribution of Bbar -> Kbar^\ast (-> Kbar pi) l^+ l^- decays with l = e, mu in the low recoil region (i.e. at high dilepton invariant masses of the order of the mass of the b-quark) to account model-independently for CP violation beyond the Standard Model, working to next-to-leading order QCD. From the employed heavy quark effective theory framework we identify the key CP observables with reduced hadronic uncertainties. Since some of the CP asymmetries are CP-odd they can be measured without B-flavour tagging. This is particularly beneficial for Bbar_s,B_s -> phi(-> K^+ K^-) l^+ l^- decays, which are not self-tagging, and we work out the corresponding time-integrated CP asymmetries. Presently available experimental constraints allow the proposed CP asymmetries to be sizeable, up to values of the order ~ 0.2, while the corresponding Standard Model values receive a strong parametric suppression at the level of O(10^-4). Furthermore, we work out the allowed ranges of the short-distance (Wilson) coefficients C_9,C_10 in the presence of CP violation beyond the Standard Model but no further Dirac structures. We find the Bbar_s -> mu^+ mu^- branching ratio to be below 9*10^-9 (at 95% CL). Possibilities to check the performance of the theoretical low recoil framework are pointed out.

Predictions for $B \to K γγ$ decays

We present a phenomenological study of the rare double radiative decay $B\to K γγ$ in the Standard Model (SM) and beyond. Using the operator product expansion (OPE) technique, we estimate the short-distance (SD) contribution to the decay amplitude in a region of the phase space which is around the point where all decay products have energy $\sim m_b/3$ in the rest frame of the $B$-meson. At lowest order in 1/Q, where $Q$ is of order $m_b$, the $B\to K γγ$ matrix element is then expressed in terms of the usual $B\to K$ form factors known from semileptonic rare decays. The integrated SD branching ratio in the SM in the OPE region turns out to be $Δ{\cal{B}}(B \to K γγ)_{SM}^{OPE} \simeq 1 \times 10^{-9}$. We work out the di-photon invariant mass distribution with and without the resonant background through $B\to K \{η_c,χ_{c0}\}\to Kγγ$. In the SM, the resonance contribution is dominant in the region of phase space where the OPE is valid. The present experimental upper limit on $B_s \to τ^+ τ^-$ decays, which constrains the scalar/pseudoscalar Four-Fermi operators with $τ^+ τ^-$, leaves considerable room for new physics in the one-particle-irreducible contribution to $B\to K γγ$ decays. In this case, we find that the SD $B\to K γγ$ branching ratio can be enhanced by one order of magnitude with respect to its SM value and the SD contribution can lie outside of the resonance peaks.

The Decay B --> K l^+ l^- at Low Hadronic Recoil and Model-Independent Delta B = 1 Constraints

We study the decay B --> K l^+ l^- for l = e,mu,tau with a softly recoiling kaon, that is, for high dilepton invariant masses sqrt{q^2} of the order of the b-quark mass. This kinematic region can be treated within an operator product expansion and simplified using heavy quark symmetry, leading to systematic predictions for heavy-to-light processes such as B --> K^(*) l^+ l^-. We show that the decay rates of both B --> K^* l^+ l^- and B --> K l^+ l^- decays into light leptons depend on a common combination of short-distance coefficients. The corresponding CP-asymmetries are hence identical. Furthermore we present low recoil predictions for B --> K l^+ l^- observables, including the flat term in the angular distribution which becomes sizable for taus. We work out model-independently the constraints on Delta B = 1 operators using the most recent data from the experiments BaBar, Belle, CDF and LHCb. For constructive interference with the standard model, generic new physics is pushed up to scales above 44 TeV at 95% CL. Assuming none or small CP-violation we obtain a lower bound on the position of the zero of the forward-backward asymmetry of B^0 --> K^*0 l^+ l^- decays as q_0^2 > 1.7 GeV^2, which improves to q_0^2 > 2.6 GeV^2 for a standard model-like sign b --> s gamma amplitude.

A large Muon Electric Dipole Moment from Flavor?

We study the prospects and opportunities of a large muon electric dipole moment (EDM) of the order (10^{-24} - 10^{-22}) ecm. We investigate how natural such a value is within the general minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with CP violation from lepton flavor violation in view of the experimental constraints. In models with hybrid gauge-gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking a large muon EDM is indicative for the structure of flavor breaking at the Planck scale, and points towards a high messenger scale.

Flavor in Supersymmetry: Anarchy versus Structure

Future high-precision flavor experiments may discover a pattern of deviations from the standard model predictions for flavor-changing neutral current processes. One of the interesting questions that can be answered then will be whether the flavor structure of the new physics is related to that of the standard model or not. We analyze this aspect of flavor physics within a specific framework: supersymmetric models where the soft breaking terms are dominated by gauge-mediation but get non-negligible contributions from gravity-mediation. We compare the possible patterns of non-minimally flavor-violating effects that arise if the gravity-mediated contributions are anarchical vs. the case that they are structured by a Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry. We show that combining information on flavor and CP violation from meson mixing and electric dipole moments is indicative for the flavor structure of gravity-mediation.

The Benefits of B ---> K* l+ l- Decays at Low Recoil

Using the heavy quark effective theory framework put forward by Grinstein and Pirjol we work out predictions for B -> K* l+ l-, l = (e, mu), decays for a softly recoiling K*, i.e., for large dilepton masses sqrt{q^2} of the order of the b-quark mass m_b. We work to lowest order in Lambda/Q, where Q = (m_b, sqrt{q^2}) and include the next-to-leading order corrections from the charm quark mass m_c and the strong coupling at O(m_c^2/Q^2, alpha_s). The leading Lambda/m_b corrections are parametrically suppressed. The improved Isgur-Wise form factor relations correlate the B -> K* l+ l- transversity amplitudes, which simplifies the description of the various decay observables and provides opportunities for the extraction of the electroweak short distance couplings. We propose new angular observables which have very small hadronic uncertainties. We exploit existing data on B -> K* l+ l- distributions and show that the low recoil region provides powerful additional information to the large recoil one. We find disjoint best-fit solutions, which include the Standard Model, but also beyond-the-Standard Model ones. This ambiguity can be accessed with future precision measurements.

Collider Signatures of Minimal Flavor Mixing from Stop Decay Length Measurements

We investigate the prospects to extract supersymmetric couplings from a decay length measurement at the LHC. Specifically, we exploit the opportunity of a light and long-lived stop which is pair-produced through gluinos in association with like-sign top quarks. Any observed finite value of the stop decay length strongly supports models in which flavor is broken in a minimal way solely by the Standard Model Yukawa couplings. We find that a 1 picosecond stop lifetime, dominated by t~ -> c chi^0 decays, yields macroscopic transverse impact parameters of about 180 microns. If the lightest neutralino is predominantly higgsino or very close in mass to the light stop, the stop lifetime even increases and allows to observe stop tracks and possibly secondary vertices directly. Measuring squark flavor violation with the stop decay length works also with a gravitino LSP if the neutralino is the NLSP. For this case, opportunities from t~ -> c chi^0 -> c gamma G~ decays for very light gravitinos with mass <= keV are pointed out.

Theoretical Status of Rare B Decays with Muons

Rare B decays allow to investigate fundamental interactions regarding their flavor, chiral, Dirac and CP properties. In anticipation of the large data samples of exclusive B decays into muons from the forthcoming LHC experiments, in particular LHCb, as well as possible super flavor factories, we review the theoretical status and outline future opportunities to explore the borders of the Standard Model and beyond.

CP Asymmetries in bar B -> bar K* (-> bar K pi) l+ l- and Untagged bar B_s,B_s -> phi (-> K+ K-) l+ l- Decays at NLO

The decay bar B -> bar K* (-> bar K pi) l+ l- offers great opportunities to explore the physics at and above the electroweak scale by means of an angular analysis. We investigate the physics potential of the seven CP asymmetries plus the asymmetry in the rate, working at low dilepton mass using QCD factorization at next-to leading order (NLO). The b ->s CP asymmetries are doubly Cabibbo-suppressed \lesssim 1 % in the Standard Model and its extensions where the CKM matrix is the only source of CP violation. Three CP asymmetries are T-odd, and can be O(1) in the presence of non-standard CP violation. The T-even asymmetries can reach O(0.1), limited by the small strong phases in the large recoil region. We furthermore point out an easy way to measure CP phases from time-integrated, untagged bar B_d, B_d -> K* (-> K0 pi0) l+ l- and bar B_s,B_s -> phi (-> K+ K-) l+ l- decays. Analyses of these CP asymmetries can rule out, or further support the minimal description of CP violation through the CKM mechanism. Experimental studies are promising for (super) flavor factories and at hadron colliders.

Measuring Flavor Mixing with Minimal Flavor Violation at the LHC

The mixing between third and second (or first) generation squarks is very small in supersymmetric models with minimal flavor violation such as gauge-, anomaly- or gaugino-mediation. An opportunity to measure this mixing will arise if the lightest stop is close enough in mass to the lightest neutralino, so that the decays into third generation quarks are kinematically forbidden. We analyze under which circumstances it might become possible to measure at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) the rate of the flavor changing stop decays.

b-physics signals of the lightest CP-odd Higgs in the NMSSM at large tan beta

We investigate the low energy phenomenology of the lighter pseudoscalar $A_1^0$ in the NMSSM. The $A_1^0$ mass can naturally be small due to a global $U(1)_R$ symmetry of the Higgs potential, which is only broken by trilinear soft terms. The $A_1^0$ mass is further protected from renormalization group effects in the large $\tan β$ limit. We calculate the $b \to s A_1^0$ amplitude at leading order in $\tan β$ and work out the contributions to rare $K$, $B$ and radiative $Υ$-decays and $B -\bar B$ mixing. We obtain constraints on the $A_1^0$ mass and couplings and show that masses down to ${\cal{O}}(10)$ MeV are allowed. The $b$-physics phenomenology of the NMSSM differs from the MSSM in the appearance of sizeable renormalization effects from neutral Higgses to the photon and gluon dipole operators and the breakdown of the MSSM correlation between the $B_s \to μ^+ μ^-$ branching ratio and $B_s - \bar B_s$ mixing. For $A_1^0$ masses above the tau threshold the $A_1^0$ can be searched for in $b \to s τ^+ τ^-$ processes with branching ratios $\lsim 10^{-3}$.

Strong-weak CP hierarchy from non-renormalization theorems

We point out that the hierarchy between the measured values of the CKM phase and the strong CP phase has a natural origin in supersymmetry with spontaneous CP violation and low energy supersymmetry breaking. The underlying reason is simple and elegant: in supersymmetry the strong CP phase is protected by an exact non-renormalization theorem while the CKM phase is not. We present explicit examples of models which exploit this fact and discuss corrections to the non-renormalization theorem in the presence of supersymmetry breaking. This framework for solving the strong CP problem has generic predictions for the superpartner spectrum, for CP and flavor violation, and predicts a preferred range of values for electric dipole moments.
