EOS -- A Software for Flavor Physics Phenomenology

EOS is an open-source software for a variety of computational tasks in flavor physics. Its use cases include theory predictions within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, Bayesian inference of theory parameters from experimental and theoretical likelihoods, and simulation of pseudo events for a number of signal processes. EOS ensures high-performance computations through a C++ back-end and ease of usability through a Python front-end. To achieve this flexibility, EOS enables the user to select from a variety of implementations of the relevant decay processes and hadronic matrix elements at run time. In this article, we describe the general structure of the software framework and provide basic examples. Further details and in-depth interactive examples are provided as part of the EOS online documentation.

$B\to P$ and $B\to V$ Form Factors from $B$-Meson Light-Cone Sum Rules beyond Leading Twist

We provide results for the full set of form factors describing semileptonic $B$-meson transitions to pseudoscalar mesons $π$, $K$, $\bar{D}$ and vector mesons $ρ$, $K^*$, $\bar{D}^*$. Our results are obtained within the framework of QCD Light-Cone Sum Rules with $B$-meson distribution amplitudes. We recalculate and confirm the results for the leading-twist two-particle contributions in the literature. Furthermore, we calculate and provide new expressions for the two-particle contributions up to twist four. Following new developments for the three-particle distribution amplitudes, we calculate and provide new results for the complete set of three-particle contributions up to twist four. The form factors are computed numerically at several phase space points using up-to-date input parameters, including correlations across phase space points and form factors. We use a model ansatz for all contributing $B$-meson distribution amplitudes that is self-consistent up to twist-four accuracy. We find that the higher-twist two-particle contributions have a substantial impact on the results, and dominate over the three-particle contributions. Our numerical results, including correlations, are provided as machine-readable ancillary files. We discuss the qualitative phenomenological impact of our results on the present $b$ anomalies.

Heavy-Quark Expansion for $\bar{B}_s\to D^{(*)}_s$ Form Factors and Unitarity Bounds beyond the $SU(3)_F$ Limit

We carry out a comprehensive analysis of the full set of $\bar{B}_q \to D_q^{(*)}$ form factors for spectator quarks $q=u,d,s$ within the framework of the Heavy-Quark Expansion (HQE) to order $\mathcal{O}(α_s, 1/m_b, 1/m_c^2)$. In addition to the available lattice QCD calculations we make use of two new sets of theoretical constraints: we produce for the first time numerical predictions for the full set of $\bar{B}_s \to D_s^{(*)}$ form factors using Light-Cone Sum Rules with $B_s$-meson distribution amplitudes. Furthermore, we reassess the QCD three-point sum rule results for the Isgur-Wise functions entering all our form factors for both $q=u,d$ and $q=s$ spectator quarks. These additional constraints allow us to go beyond the commonly used assumption of $SU(3)_F$ symmetry for the $\bar B_s\to D_s^{(*)}$ form factors, especially in the unitarity constraints which we impose throughout our analysis. We find the coefficients of the IW functions emerging at $\mathcal{O}(1/m_c^2)$ to be consistent with the naive $\mathcal{O}(1)$ expectation, indicating a good convergence of the HQE. While we do not find significant $SU(3)$ breaking, the explicit treatment of $q=s$ as compared to a simple symmetry assumption renders the unitarity constraints more effective. We find that the (pseudo)scalar bounds are saturated to a large degree, which affects our theory predictions. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of our improved form factors by extracting $|V_{cb}|$ from $\bar B\to D^{(*)}\ellν$ decays and producing theoretical predictions for the lepton-flavour universality ratios $R(D)$, $R(D^*)$, $R(D_s)$ and $R(D_s^*)$, as well as the $τ$- and $D_q^*$ polarization fractions for the $\bar B_q\to D_q^{(*)}τν$ modes.

Angular Analysis of \boldmath $Λ_b\to Λ_c (\to Λπ)\ell\barν$

We revisit the decay $Λ_b^0\to Λ_c^+ \ell^-\barν$ ($\ell = e,μ,τ$) with a subsequent two-body decay $Λ_c^+ \to Λ^0 π^+$ in the Standard Model and in generic New Physics models. The decay's joint four-differential angular distribution can be expressed in terms of ten angular observables, assuming negligible polarization of the initial $Λ_b$ state. We present compact analytical results for all angular observables, which enables us to discuss their possible New Physics reach. We find that the decay at hand probes more and complementary independent combinations of Wilson coefficients compared to its mesonic counter parts $\bar{B}\to D^{(*)}\ell^-\barν$. Our result for the angular distribution is at variance with some of the results on scalar-vector interference terms in the literature. We provide numerical estimates for all angular observables based on lattice-QCD results for the $Λ_b \to Λ_c$ form factors and account for a recent measurement of the parity-violating parameter in $Λ_c^+\to Λ^0π^+$ decays by BESIII. A numerical implementation of our results is made publicly available as part of the EOS software.

Bayesian analysis of $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ Wilson coefficients using the full angular distribution of $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p\, π^-)μ^+μ^-$ decays

Following updated and extended measurements of the full angular distribution of the decay $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p\,π^-)μ^+μ^-$ by the LHCb collaborations, as well as a new measurement of the $Λ\to p π^-$ decay asymmetry parameter by the BESIII collaboration, we study the impact of these results on searches for non-standard effects in exclusive $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays. To this end, we constrain the Wilson coefficients $\mathcal{C}_{9}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{10}$ of the numerically leading dimension-six operators in the weak effective Hamiltonian, in addition to the relevant nuisance parameters. In stark contrast to previous analyses of this decay mode, the changes in the updated experimental results lead us to find very good compatibility with both the Standard Model and with the $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ anomalies observed in rare $B$-meson decays. We provide a detailed analysis of the impact of the partial angular distribution, the full angular distribution, and the $Λ_b\to Λμ^+μ^-$ branching fraction on the Wilson coefficients. In this process, we are also able to constrain the size of the production polarization of the $Λ_b$ baryon at LHCb.

Theory determination of $\bar{B}\to D^{(*)}\ell^-\barν$ form factors at $\mathcal{O}(1/m_c^2)$

We carry out an analysis of the full set of ten $\bar{B}\to D^{(*)}$ form factors within the framework of the Heavy-Quark Expansion (HQE) to order $\mathcal{O}(α_s,\,1/m_b,\,1/m_c^2)$, both with and without the use of experimental data. This becomes possible due to a recent calculation of these form factors at and beyond the maximal physical recoil using QCD light-cone sum rules, in combination with constraints from lattice QCD, QCD three-point sum rules and unitarity. We find good agreement amongst the various theoretical results, as well as between the theoretical results and the kinematical distributions in $\bar{B}\to D^{(*)}\lbrace e^-,μ^-\rbrace\barν$ measurements. The coefficients entering at the $1/m_c^2$ level are found to be of $\mathcal{O}(1)$, indicating convergence of the HQE. The phenomenological implications of our study include an updated exclusive determination of $|V_{cb}|$ in the HQE, which is compatible with both the exclusive determination using the BGL parametrization and with the inclusive determination. We also revisit predictions for the lepton-flavour universality ratios $R_{D^{(*)}}$, the $τ$ polarization observables $P_τ^{D^{(*)}}$, and the longitudinal polarization fraction $F_L$. Posterior samples for the HQE parameters are provided as ancillary files, allowing for their use in subsequent studies.

Prospects for disentangling long- and short-distance effects in the decays $B\to K^* μ^+μ^-$

Theory uncertainties on non-local hadronic effects limit the New Physics discovery potential of the rare decays $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-$. We investigate prospects to disentangle New Physics effects in the short-distance coefficients from these effects. Our approach makes use of an event-by-event amplitude analysis, and relies on the state of the art parametrisation of the non-local contributions. We find that non-standard effects in the short-distance coefficients can be successfully disentangled from non-local hadronic effects. The impact of the truncation on the parametrisation of non-local contributions to the Wilson coefficients are for the first time systematically examined and prospects for its precise determination are discussed. We find that physical observables are unaffected by these uncertainties. Compared to other methods, our approach provides for a more precise extraction of the angular observables from data.

Angular Analysis of the Decay $Λ_b \to Λ(\to N π) \ell^+\ell^-$

We study the differential decay rate for the rare $Λ_b \to Λ(\to N π)\ell^+\ell^-$ transition, including a determination of the complete angular distribution, assuming unpolarized $Λ_b$ baryons. On the basis of a properly chosen parametrization of the various helicity amplitudes, we provide expressions for the angular observables within the Standard Model and a subset of new physics models with chirality-flipped operators. Hadronic effects at low recoil are estimated by combining information from lattice QCD with (improved) form-factor relations in Heavy Quark Effective Theory. Our estimates for large hadronic recoil -- at this stage -- are still rather uncertain because the baryonic input functions are not so well known, and non-factorizable spectator effects have not been worked out systematically so far. Still, our phenomenological analysis of decay asymmetries and angular observables for $Λ_b \to Λ(\to N π)\ell^+\ell^-$ reveals that this decay mode can provide new and complementary constraints on the Wilson coefficients in radiative and semileptonic $b \to s$ transitions compared to the corresponding mesonic modes.

General Analysis of B -> K^(*) l^+ l^- Decays at Low Recoil

We analyze the angular distributions of B -> K^* (-> K pi) l^+ l^- and B -> K l^+ l^- decays in the region of low hadronic recoil in a model-independent way by taking into account the complete set of dimension-six operators [sbar Gamma b][lbar Gamma' l]. We obtain several novel low-recoil observables with high sensitivity to non-standard-model Dirac structures, including CP-asymmetries which do not require flavor tagging. The transversity observables H_T^(1,3,4,5) are found to be insensitive to hadronic matrix elements and their uncertainties even when considering the complete set of operators. In the most general scenario we show that the low recoil operator product expansion can be probed at the few-percent level using the angular observable J_7. Higher sensitivities are possible assuming no tensor contributions, specifically by testing the low-recoil relation |H_T^(1)|=1. We explicitly demonstrate the gain in reach of the low-recoil observables in accessing the ratio |C_9/C_10| compared to the forward-backward asymmetry, and probing CP-violating right-handed currents Im C_10'. We give updated Standard Model predictions for key observables in B -> K^(*) l^+ l^- decays.

Impact of leptonic $τ$ decays on the distribution of $B \to P μ\barν$ decays

We calculate the fully-differential rate of the decays $B\to Pτ(\to μ\barνν)\barν$ where $P = D,π$, which is a background to the semimuonic decays $B\to Pμ\barν$. The decays with a $3ν$ final state can have a sizeable impact on the experimental analyses of the ratios $R_D$ and $R_π$, depending on the event selection in the analysis. We outline a strategy which permits the extraction of $R_P \mathcal{B}(τ\to μ\barνν)$ from the neutrino-inclusive rate. Our analytic results can also be used to test both existing and upcoming experimental analyses. We further provide Monte Carlo samples of the 5D rate of the neutrino-inclusive decays $B\to PμX_{\barν}$.

Using $Λ_b\to Λμ^+μ^-$ data within a Bayesian analysis of $|ΔB| = |ΔS| = 1$ decays

We study the impact of including the baryonic decay $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p π^-)μ^+μ^-$ in a Bayesian analysis of $|ΔB | = |ΔS| = 1$ transitions. We perform fits of the Wilson coefficients $C_{9}$, $C_{9'}$, $C_{10}$ and $C_{10'}$, in addition to the relevant nuisance parameters. Our analysis combines data for the differential branching fraction and three angular observables of $Λ_b\to Λ(\to p π^-)μ^+μ^-$ with data for the branching ratios of $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$ and inclusive $b \to s\ell^+\ell^-$ decays. Newly available precise lattice QCD results for the full set of $Λ_b \to Λ$ form factors are used to evaluate the observables of the baryonic decay. Our fits prefer shifts to $C_{9}$ that are opposite in sign compared to those found in global fits of only mesonic decays, and the posterior odds show no evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. We investigate a possible hadronic origin of the observed tensions between theory and experiment.

$1/m$ Corrections for Orbitally Excited Heavy Mesons and the $1/2$ - $3/2$ Puzzle

We re-investigate the effects of the $1/m_c$ corrections on the spectrum of the lowest orbitally excited $D$-meson states. We argue that one should expect the $1/m_c$ corrections to induce a significant mixing between the two lowest lying $1^+$ states. We discuss the implications of this mixing and compute its effect on the semileptonic decays $B \to D^{**} \ell \barν$ and the strong $D^{**}$ decays.

Analyzing $b\to u$ transitions in semileptonic $\bar{B}_s \to K^{*+}(\to K π)\ell^-\barν_\ell$ decays

We study the semileptonic decay $\bar{B}_s \to K^{*+} \ell^-\barν_\ell$, which is induced by $b\to u \ell^- \barν_\ell$ transitions at the quark level. We take into account the standard model (SM) operator from $W$-boson exchange as well as possible extensions from physics beyond the SM. The secondary decay $K^{*+}\to Kπ$ can be used to study a number of angular observables, which are worked out in terms of short-distance Wilson coefficients and hadronic form factors. Our analysis allows for an independent extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ and for the determination of certain ratios of $\bar{B}_s\to K^*$ form factors. Moreover, a future precision measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in the $\bar{B}_s \to K^{*+} \ell^-\barν_\ell$ decay can be used to unambiguously verify the left-handed nature of the transition operator as predicted by the SM. We provide numerical estimates for the relevant angular observables and the resulting decay distributions on the basis of available form-factor information from lattice and sum-rule estimates. In addition, we pay particular attention to suitable combinations of angular observables in the decays $\bar{B}_s \to K^{*+}(\to Kπ)\ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $\bar{B} \to K^{*0}(\to Kπ)\ell^+\ell^-$, and find that they provide complementary constraints on the relevant $b\to s$ short-distance coefficients. As a by-product, we perform a SM fit on the basis of selected experimental decay rates and hadronic input functions, which results in $|V_{ub}| = (4.07 \pm 0.20) \cdot 10^{-3}$.

Extracting Angular Observables without a Likelihood and Applications to Rare Decays

Our goal is to obtain a complete set of angular observables arising in a generic multi-body process. We show how this can be achieved without the need to carry out a likelihood fit of the angular distribution to the measured events. Instead, we apply the method of moments that relies both on the orthogonality of angular functions and the estimation of integrals by Monte Carlo techniques. The big advantage of this method is that the joint distribution of all observables can be easily extracted, even for very few events. The method of moments is shown to be robust against mismodeling of the angular distribution. Our main result is an explicit algorithm that accounts for systematic uncertainties from detector-resolution and acceptance effects. Finally, we present the necessary process-dependent formulae needed for direct application of the method to several rare decays of interest.

Extrapolation and unitarity bounds for the $B \to π$ form factor

We address the problem of extrapolating the vector form factor $f_{Bπ}^+$, which is relevant to $B\to π\ell ν_\ell$ decays, from the region of small to the region of large momentum transfer. As input, we use the QCD light-cone sum rule at small momentum transfer. We carry out a comprehensive Bayesian uncertainty analysis and obtain correlated uncertainties for the normalization and shape parameters of the form factor. The $z$-series parametrization for $f_{Bπ}^+$ is employed to extrapolate our results to large momentum transfer, and to compare with the lattice QCD results. To test the validity of our extrapolation we use the upper and lower bounds from the unitarity and positivity of the two-point correlator of heavy-light quark currents. This correlator is updated by including the NNLO perturbative term and the NLO correction to the quark condensate contribution. We demonstrate that an additional input including the form factor, its first and second derivative calculated at one value of momentum transfer from the light-cone sum rules, considerably improves the bounds. This only holds when the correlations between the form factor parameters are taken into account. We further combine our results with the latest experimental measurements of $B\to π\ell ν_\ell$ by the BaBar and Belle collaborations, and obtain $|V_{ub}|= (3.32^{+0.26}_{-0.22}) \cdot 10^{-3}$ from a Bayesian analysis.

Comprehensive Bayesian Analysis of Rare (Semi)leptonic and Radiative B Decays

The available data on $|ΔB| = |ΔS| = 1$ decays are in good agreement with the Standard Model when permitting subleading power corrections of about 15% at large hadronic recoil. Constraining new-physics effects in $\mathcal{C}_7$, $\mathcal{C}_9$, $\mathcal{C}_{10}$, the data still demand the same size of power corrections as in the Standard Model. In the presence of chirality-flipped operators, all but one of the power corrections reduce substantially. The Bayes factors are in favor of the Standard Model. Using new lattice inputs for $B\to K^*$ form factors, the evidence of models with chirality-flipped operators increases, but does not outperform the Standard Model. We use the data to further constrain the hadronic form factors in $B\to K$ and $B\to K^*$ transitions.

Disentangling the Decay Observables in $B^- \to π^+π^-\ell^-\barν_\ell$

We study the semileptonic $b\to u$ transition in the decay mode $B^-\to π^+π^-\ell^-\barν_\ell$. We define $B\to ππ$ form factors in the helicity basis, and study their properties in various kinematic limits, including form factor relations in the heavy-mass and large-energy limits, the decomposition into partial waves of the dipion system, and the resonant contribution of vector and scalar mesons. We show how angular observables in $B^-\to π^+π^-\ell^-\barν_\ell$ can be used to measure dipion form factors or to perform null tests of the Standard Model.

Implications of the experimental results on rare b --> s + (gamma, l^+ l^-) decays

The experimental measurements of flavor-changing neutral-current B-meson decays governed by b --> s + (gamma, l^+ l^-) transitions have entered a new level of precision. Recent results by Belle, CDF, Babar, and LHCb on B -->K^(*) l^+ l^- and B_s --> mu^+ mu^- decays are used in model-(in)dependent analyses to test the Standard Model predictions and to derive stronger constraints on nonstandard contributions. While in agreement with the Standard Model, they still leave sizable room for new physics.

Bayesian Fit of Exclusive $b \to s \bar\ell\ell$ Decays: The Standard Model Operator Basis

We perform a model-independent fit of the short-distance couplings $C_{7,9,10}$ within the Standard Model set of $b\to sγ$ and $b\to s\bar\ell\ell$ operators. Our analysis of $B \to K^* γ$, $B \to K^{(*)} \bar\ell\ell$ and $B_s \to \barμμ$ decays is the first to harness the full power of the Bayesian approach: all major sources of theory uncertainty explicitly enter as nuisance parameters. Exploiting the latest measurements, the fit reveals a flipped-sign solution in addition to a Standard-Model-like solution for the couplings $C_i$. Each solution contains about half of the posterior probability, and both have nearly equal goodness of fit. The Standard Model prediction is close to the best-fit point. No New Physics contributions are necessary to describe the current data. Benefitting from the improved posterior knowledge of the nuisance parameters, we predict ranges for currently unmeasured, optimized observables in the angular distributions of $B\to K^*(\to Kπ)\,\bar\ell\ell$.

Angular analysis of B --> V (--> P_1 P_2) l^+ l^- decays

The angular analysis of exclusive rare B-meson decays via intermediate vector mesons V into 4-body final states of two pseudo-scalars P_1, P_2 and a pair of light leptons l = e, mu offers a large set of observables. They can be used to test the electroweak short-distance couplings in the Standard Model and to search for New Physics. The two kinematic regions of low and high dilepton mass depend on short-distance physics in complementary ways and can be expanded in powers of Lambda_QCD/m_b. These expansions guide towards suitable combinations of observables allowing to i) reduce the hadronic uncertainties in the extraction of the short-distance couplings or ii) test the lattice QCD (B -> V) form factors in short-distance independent combinations. Several such possibilities of CP-averaged and CP-asymmetric (T-even and T-odd) quantities are presented for B_d^0 --> K^*0 (-> K pi) l^+ l^- and time-integrated CP-asymmetries without tagging for (anti-B_s, B_s) --> phi (--> K^- K^+) l^+ l^- decays in view of the latest B-factory and CDF results and the forthcoming LHCb measurements.

More Benefits of Semileptonic Rare B Decays at Low Recoil: CP Violation

We present a systematic analysis of the angular distribution of Bbar -> Kbar^\ast (-> Kbar pi) l^+ l^- decays with l = e, mu in the low recoil region (i.e. at high dilepton invariant masses of the order of the mass of the b-quark) to account model-independently for CP violation beyond the Standard Model, working to next-to-leading order QCD. From the employed heavy quark effective theory framework we identify the key CP observables with reduced hadronic uncertainties. Since some of the CP asymmetries are CP-odd they can be measured without B-flavour tagging. This is particularly beneficial for Bbar_s,B_s -> phi(-> K^+ K^-) l^+ l^- decays, which are not self-tagging, and we work out the corresponding time-integrated CP asymmetries. Presently available experimental constraints allow the proposed CP asymmetries to be sizeable, up to values of the order ~ 0.2, while the corresponding Standard Model values receive a strong parametric suppression at the level of O(10^-4). Furthermore, we work out the allowed ranges of the short-distance (Wilson) coefficients C_9,C_10 in the presence of CP violation beyond the Standard Model but no further Dirac structures. We find the Bbar_s -> mu^+ mu^- branching ratio to be below 9*10^-9 (at 95% CL). Possibilities to check the performance of the theoretical low recoil framework are pointed out.

The Decay B --> K l^+ l^- at Low Hadronic Recoil and Model-Independent Delta B = 1 Constraints

We study the decay B --> K l^+ l^- for l = e,mu,tau with a softly recoiling kaon, that is, for high dilepton invariant masses sqrt{q^2} of the order of the b-quark mass. This kinematic region can be treated within an operator product expansion and simplified using heavy quark symmetry, leading to systematic predictions for heavy-to-light processes such as B --> K^(*) l^+ l^-. We show that the decay rates of both B --> K^* l^+ l^- and B --> K l^+ l^- decays into light leptons depend on a common combination of short-distance coefficients. The corresponding CP-asymmetries are hence identical. Furthermore we present low recoil predictions for B --> K l^+ l^- observables, including the flat term in the angular distribution which becomes sizable for taus. We work out model-independently the constraints on Delta B = 1 operators using the most recent data from the experiments BaBar, Belle, CDF and LHCb. For constructive interference with the standard model, generic new physics is pushed up to scales above 44 TeV at 95% CL. Assuming none or small CP-violation we obtain a lower bound on the position of the zero of the forward-backward asymmetry of B^0 --> K^*0 l^+ l^- decays as q_0^2 > 1.7 GeV^2, which improves to q_0^2 > 2.6 GeV^2 for a standard model-like sign b --> s gamma amplitude.

The Benefits of B ---> K* l+ l- Decays at Low Recoil

Using the heavy quark effective theory framework put forward by Grinstein and Pirjol we work out predictions for B -> K* l+ l-, l = (e, mu), decays for a softly recoiling K*, i.e., for large dilepton masses sqrt{q^2} of the order of the b-quark mass m_b. We work to lowest order in Lambda/Q, where Q = (m_b, sqrt{q^2}) and include the next-to-leading order corrections from the charm quark mass m_c and the strong coupling at O(m_c^2/Q^2, alpha_s). The leading Lambda/m_b corrections are parametrically suppressed. The improved Isgur-Wise form factor relations correlate the B -> K* l+ l- transversity amplitudes, which simplifies the description of the various decay observables and provides opportunities for the extraction of the electroweak short distance couplings. We propose new angular observables which have very small hadronic uncertainties. We exploit existing data on B -> K* l+ l- distributions and show that the low recoil region provides powerful additional information to the large recoil one. We find disjoint best-fit solutions, which include the Standard Model, but also beyond-the-Standard Model ones. This ambiguity can be accessed with future precision measurements.

HONEI: A collection of libraries for numerical computations targeting multiple processor architectures

We present HONEI, an open-source collection of libraries offering a hardware oriented approach to numerical calculations. HONEI abstracts the hardware, and applications written on top of HONEI can be executed on a wide range of computer architectures such as CPUs, GPUs and the Cell processor. We demonstrate the flexibility and performance of our approach with two test applications, a Finite Element multigrid solver for the Poisson problem and a robust and fast simulation of shallow water waves. By linking against HONEI's libraries, we achieve a twofold speedup over straight forward C++ code using HONEI's SSE backend, and additional 3-4 and 4-16 times faster execution on the Cell and a GPU. A second important aspect of our approach is that the full performance capabilities of the hardware under consideration can be exploited by adding optimised application-specific operations to the HONEI libraries. HONEI provides all necessary infrastructure for development and evaluation of such kernels, significantly simplifying their development.
