Singular limits of a coupled elasto-plastic damage system as viscosity and hardening vanish

The paper studies the asymptotic analysis of a model coupling elastoplasticity and damage depending on three parameters -- governing viscosity, plastic hardening, and convergence rate of plastic strain and displacement to equilibrium -- as they vanish in different orders. The notion of limit evolution obtained is proven to coincide in any case with a notion introduced by Crismale and Rossi in 2019; moreover, such solutions are closely related to those obtained in the vanishing-viscosity limit by Crismale and Lazzaroni in 2016, for the analogous model where only the viscosity parameter was present.

Visco-energetic solutions for a model of crack growth in brittle materials

Visco-energetic solutions have been recently advanced as a new solution concept for rate-independent systems, alternative to energetic solutions/quasistatic evolutions and balanced viscosity solutions. In the spirit of this novel concept, we revisit the analysis of the variational model proposed by Francfort and Marigo for the quasi-static crack growth in brittle materials, in the case of antiplane shear. In this context, visco-energetic solutions can be constructed by perturbing the time incremental scheme for quasistatic evolutions by means of a viscous correction inspired by the term introduced by Almgren, Taylor, and Wang in the study of mean curvature flows. With our main result we prove the existence of a visco-energetic solution with a given initial crack. We also show that, if the cracks have a finite number of tips evolving smoothly on a given time interval, visco-energetic solutions comply with Griffith's criterion.

Jump processes as Generalized Gradient Flows

We have created a functional framework for a class of non-metric gradient systems. The state space is a space of nonnegative measures, and the class of systems includes the Forward Kolmogorov equations for the laws of Markov jump processes on Polish spaces. This framework comprises a definition of a notion of solutions, a method to prove existence, and an archetype uniqueness result. We do this by using only the structure that is provided directly by the dissipation functional, which need not be homogeneous, and we do not appeal to any metric structure.

Existence results for a coupled viscoplastic-damage model in thermoviscoelasticity

In this paper we address a model coupling viscoplasticity with damage in thermoviscoelasticity. The associated PDE system consists of the momentum balance with viscosity and inertia for the displacement variable, at small strains, of the plastic and damage flow rules, and of the heat equation. It has a strongly nonlinear character and in particular features quadratic terms on the right-hand side of the heat equation and of the damage flow rule, which have to be handled carefully. We propose two weak solution concepts for the related initial-boundary value problem, namely `entropic' and `weak energy' solutions. Accordingly, we prove two existence results by passing to the limit in a carefully devised time discretization scheme. Finally, in the case of a prescribed temperature profile, and under a strongly simplifying condition, we provide a continuous dependence result, yielding uniqueness of weak energy solutions.

From Adhesive to Brittle Delamination in Visco-Elastodynamics

In this paper we analyze a system for brittle delamination between two visco-elastic bodies, also subject to inertia, which can be interpreted as a model for dynamic fracture. The rate-independent flow rule for the delamination parameter is coupled with the momentum balance for the displacement, including inertia. This model features a nonsmooth constraint ensuring the continuity of the displacements outside the crack set, which is marked by the support of the delamination parameter. A weak solvability concept, generalizing the notion of energetic solution for rate-independent systems to the present mixed rate-dependent/rate-independent frame, is proposed. Via refined variational convergence techniques, existence of solutions is proved by passing to the limit in approximating systems which regularize the nonsmooth constraint by conditions for adhesive contact. The presence of the inertial term requires the design of suitable recovery spaces small enough to provide compactness but large enough to recover the information on the crack set in the limit.

Singular vanishing-viscosity limits of gradient flows: the finite-dimensional case

In this note we study the singular vanishing-viscosity limit of a gradient flow set in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and driven by a smooth, but possibly non convex, time-dependent energy functional. We resort to ideas and techniques from the variational approach to gradient flows and rate-independent evolution to show that, under suitable assumptions, the solutions to the singularly perturbed problem converge to a curve of stationary points of the energy, whose behavior at jump points is characterized in terms of the notion of Dissipative Viscosity solution. We also provide sufficient conditions under which Dissipative Viscosity solutions enjoy better properties, which turn them into Balanced Viscosity solutions. Finally, we discuss the generic character of our assumptions.

A rate-independent gradient system in damage coupled with plasticity via structured strains

This contribution deals with a class of models combining isotropic damage with plasticity. We are inspired by It has been inspired by a work by Freddi and Royer-Carfagni, including the case where the inelastic part of the strain only evolves in regions where the material is damaged. The evolution both of the damage and of the plastic variable is assumed to be rate-independent. Existence of solutions is established in the abstract energetic framework elaborated by Mielke and coworkers.

"Entropic" solutions to a thermodynamically consistent PDE system for phase transitions and damage

In this paper we analyze a PDE system modelling (non-isothermal) phase transitions and damage phenomena in thermoviscoelastic materials. The model is thermodynamically consistent: in particular, no {\em small perturbation assumption} is adopted, which results in the presence of quadratic terms on the right-hand side of the temperature equation, only estimated in $L^1$. The whole system has a highly nonlinear character. We address the existence of a weak notion of solution, referred to as "entropic", where the temperature equation is formulated with the aid of an entropy inequality, and of a total energy inequality. This solvability concept reflects the basic principles of thermomechanics as well as the thermodynamical consistency of the model. It allows us to obtain \emph{global-in-time} existence theorems without imposing any restriction on the size of the initial data. We prove our results by passing to the limit in a time discretization scheme, carefully tailored to the nonlinear features of the PDE system (with its "entropic" formulation), and of the a priori estimates performed on it. Our time-discrete analysis could be useful towards the numerical study of this model.

A quasilinear differential inclusion for viscous and rate-independent damage systems in non-smooth domains

This paper focuses on rate-independent damage in elastic bodies. Since the driving energy is nonconvex, solutions may have jumps as a function of time, and in this situation it is known that the classical concept of energetic solutions for rate-independent systems may fail to accurately describe the behavior of the system at jumps. Therefore we resort to the (by now well-established) vanishing viscosity approach to rate-independent modeling, and approximate the model by its viscous regularization. In fact, the analysis of the latter PDE system presents remarkable difficulties, due to its highly nonlinear character. We tackle it by combining a variational approach to a class of abstract doubly nonlinear evolution equations, with careful regularity estimates tailored to this specific system, relying on a q-Laplacian type gradient regularization of the damage variable. Hence for the viscous problem we conclude the existence of weak solutions, satisfying a suitable energy-dissipation inequality that is the starting point for the vanishing viscosity analysis. The latter leads to the notion of (weak) parameterized solution to our rate-independent system, which encompasses the influence of viscosity in the description of the jump regime.

Analysis of a model coupling volume and surface processes in thermoviscoelasticity

We focus on a highly nonlinear evolutionary abstract PDE system describing volume processes coupled with surfaces processes in thermoviscoelasticity, featuring the quasi-static momentum balance, the equation for the unidirectional evolution of an internal variable on the surface, and the equations for the temperature in the bulk domain and the temperature on the surface. A significant example of our system occurs in the modeling for the unidirectional evolution of the adhesion between a body and a rigid support, subject to thermal fluctuations and in contact with friction. We investigate the related initial-boundary value problem, and in particular the issue of existence of global-in-time solutions, on an abstract level. This allows us to highlight the analytical features of the problem and, at the same time, to exploit the tight coupling between the various equations in order to deduce suitable estimates on (an approximation) of the problem. Our existence result is proved by passing to the limit in a carefully tailored approximate problem, and by extending the obtained local-in-time solution by means of a refined prolongation argument.

A degenerating PDE system for phase transitions and damage

In this paper, we analyze a PDE system arising in the modeling of phase transition and damage phenomena in thermoviscoelastic materials. The resulting evolution equations in the unknowns θ(absolute temperature), u (displacement), and χ(phase/damage parameter) are strongly nonlinearly coupled. Moreover, the momentum equation for u contains χ-dependent elliptic operators, which degenerate at the pure phases (corresponding to the values χ=0 and χ=1), making the whole system degenerate. That is why, we have to resort to a suitable weak solvability notion for the analysis of the problem: it consists of the weak formulations of the heat and momentum equation, and, for the phase/damage parameter χ, of a generalization of the principle of virtual powers, partially mutuated from the theory of rate-independent damage processes. To prove an existence result for this weak formulation, an approximating problem is introduced, where the elliptic degeneracy of the displacement equation is ruled out: in the framework of damage models, this corresponds to allowing for partial damage only. For such an approximate system, global-in-time existence and well-posedness results are established in various cases. Then, the passage to the limit to the degenerate system is performed via suitable variational techniques.

On the transversality conditions and their genericity

In this note we review some results on the transversality conditions for a smooth Fredholm map $f: X \times (0,T) \to Y$ between two Banach spaces $X,Y$. These conditions are well-known in the realm of bifurcation theory and commonly accepted as "generic". Here we show that under the transversality assumptions the sections $C(t)=\{x:f(x,t)=0\}$ of the zero set of $f$ are discrete for every $t\in (0,T)$ and we discuss a somehow explicit family of perturbations of $f$ along which transversality holds up to a residual set. The application of these results to the case when $f$ is the $X$-differential of a time-dependent energy functional $E:X\times (0,T)\to R$ and $C(t)$ is the set of the critical points of $E$ provides the motivation and the main example of this paper.

Stability results for doubly nonlinear differential inclusions by variational convergence

We present a stability result for a wide class doubly nonlinear equations, featuring general maximal monotone operators, and (possibly) nonconvex and nonsmooth energy functionals. The limit analysis resides on the reformulation of the differential evolution as a scalar energy-conservation equation with the aid of the so-called Fitzpatrick theory for the representation of monotone operators. In particular, our result applies to the vanishing viscosity approximation of rate-independent systems.

Analysis of a temperature-dependent model for adhesive contact with friction

We propose a model for unilateral contact with adhesion between a viscoelastic body and a rigid support, encompassing thermal and frictional effects. Following the approach by M. Fremond, adhesion is described in terms of a surface damage parameter. The main result of the paper states the existence of global solutions to the associated Cauchy problem. It is proved by passing to the limit in a carefully tailored approximate problem, via variational techniques.

Variational convergence of gradient flows and rate-independent evolutions in metric spaces

We study the asymptotic behaviour of families of gradient flows in a general metric setting, when the metric-dissipation potentials degenerate in the limit to a dissipation with linear growth. We present a general variational definition of BV solutions to metric evolutions, showing the different characterization of the solution in the absolutely continuous regime, on the singular Cantor part, and along the jump transitions. By using tools of metric analysis, BV functions and blow-up by time rescaling, we show that this variational notion is stable with respect to a wide class of perturbations involving energies, distances, and dissipation potentials. As a particular application, we show that BV solutions to rate-independent problems arise naturally as a limit of $p$-gradient flows, $p>1$, when the exponents $p$ converge to 1.

Adhesive contact delaminating at mixed mode, its thermodynamics and analysis

An adhesive unilateral contact between visco-elastic heat-conductive bodies in linear Kelvin-Voigt rheology is scrutinised. The flow-rule for debonding the adhesive is considered rate independent, unidirectional, and non-associative due to dependence on the mixity of modes of delamination, namely of Mode I (opening) and of Mode II (shearing). Such mode-mixity dependence of delamination is a very pronounced (and experimentally confirmed) phenomenon typically considered in engineering models. An anisothermal, thermodynamically consistent model is derived, considering a heat-conductive viscoelastic material and the coupling via thermal expansion and adhesion-depending heat transition through the contact surface. We prove the existence of weak solutions by passing to the limit in a carefully designed semi-implicit time-discretization scheme.

Nonsmooth analysis of doubly nonlinear evolution equations

In this paper we analyze a broad class of abstract doubly nonlinear evolution equations in Banach spaces, driven by nonsmooth and nonconvex energies. We provide some general sufficient conditions, on the dissipation potential and the energy functional, for existence of solutions to the related Cauchy problem. We prove our main existence result by passing to the limit in a time-discretization scheme with variational techniques. Finally, we discuss an application to a material model in finite-strain elasticity.

Thermodynamics and analysis of rate-independent adhesive contact at small strains

We address a model for adhesive unilateral frictionless Signorini-type contact between bodies of heat-conductive viscoelastic material, in the linear Kelvin-Voigt rheology, undergoing thermal expansion. The flow-rule for debonding the adhesion is considered rate-independent and unidirectional, and a thermodynamically consistent model is derived and analysed as far as the existence of a weak solution is concerned.

Thermal effects in adhesive contact: modelling and analysis

In this paper, we consider a contact problem with adhesion between a viscoelastic body and a rigid support, taking thermal effects into account. The PDE system we deal with is derived within the modelling approach proposed by M. Fremond and, in particular, includes the entropy balance equations, describing the evolution of the temperatures of the body and of the adhesive material. Our main result consists in showing the existence of global in time solutions (to a suitable variational formulation) of the related initial and boundary value problem.
