On the asymptotic support of Plancherel measures for homogeneous spaces

Let $G$ be a real linear reductive group and let $H$ be a unimodular, locally algebraic subgroup. Let $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ be the set of irreducible unitary representations of $G$ contributing to the decomposition of $L^2(G/H)$, namely the support of the Plancherel measure. In this paper, we will relate $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ with the image of moment map from the cotangent bundle $T^*(G/H)\to \mathfrak{g}^*$. For the homogeneous space $X=G/H$, we attach a complex Levi subgroup $L_X$ of the complexification of $G$ and we show that in some sense "most" of representations in $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ are obtained as quantizations of coadjoint orbits $\mathcal{O}$ such that $\mathcal{O}\simeq G/L$ and that the complexification of $L$ is conjugate to $L_X$. Moreover, the union of such coadjoint orbits $\mathcal{O}$ coincides asymptotically with the moment map image. As a corollary, we show that $L^2(G/H)$ has a discrete series if the moment map image contains a nonempty subset of elliptic elements.

Irreducible Characters and Semisimple Coadjoint Orbits

When $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is a real, linear algebraic group, the orbit method predicts that nearly all of the unitary dual of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ consists of representations naturally associated to orbital parameters $(\mathcal{O},Γ)$. If $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is a real, reductive group and $\mathcal{O}$ is a semisimple coadjoint orbit, the corresponding unitary representation $π(\mathcal{O},Γ)$ may be constructed utilizing Vogan and Zuckerman's cohomological induction together with Mackey's real parabolic induction. In this article, we give a geometric character formula for such representations $π(\mathcal{O},Γ)$. Special cases of this formula were previously obtained by Harish-Chandra and Kirillov when $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is compact and by Rossmann and Duflo when $π(\mathcal{O},Γ)$ is tempered.

Wave Front Sets of Reductive Lie Group Representations

If $G$ is a Lie group, $H\subset G$ is a closed subgroup, and $τ$ is a unitary representation of $H$, then the authors give a sufficient condition on $ξ\in i\mathfrak{g}^*$ to be in the wave front set of $\operatorname{Ind}_H^Gτ$. In the special case where $τ$ is the trivial representation, this result was conjectured by Howe. If $G$ is a real, reductive algebraic group and $π$ is a unitary representation of $G$ that is weakly contained in the regular representation, then the authors give a geometric description of $\operatorname{WF}(π)$ in terms of the direct integral decomposition of $π$ into irreducibles. Special cases of this result were previously obtained by Kashiwara-Vergne, Howe, and Rossmann. The authors give applications to harmonic analysis problems and branching problems.

The Continuous Spectrum in Discrete Series Branching Laws

If $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, $H$ is a symmetric subgroup, and $π$ is a discrete series representation of $G$, the authors give a condition on the pair $(G,H)$ which guarantees that the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ contains each irreducible representation of $H$ with finite multiplicity. In addition, if $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, and $H\subset G$ is a closed, reductive subgroup of Harish-Chandra class, the authors show that the multiplicity function in the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ is constant along `continuous parameters'. In obtaining these results, the authors develop a new technique for studying multiplicities in the restriction $π|_H$ via convolution with Harish-Chandra characters. This technique has the advantage of being useful for studying the continuous spectrum as well as the discrete spectrum.
