Mamoda2.5: Enhancing Unified Multimodal Model with DiT-MoE

We present Mamoda2.5, a unified AR-Diffusion framework that seamlessly integrates multimodal understanding and generation within a single architecture. To efficiently enhance the model's generation capability, we equip the Diffusion Transformer backbone with a fine-grained Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) design (128 experts, Top-8 routing), yielding a 25B-parameter model that activates only 3B parameters, significantly reducing training costs while scaling up the model capacity. Mamoda2.5 achieves top-tier generation performance on VBench 2.0 and sets a new record in video editing quality, surpassing evaluated open-source models and matching the performance of current top-tier proprietary models, including the Kling O1 on OpenVE-Bench. Furthermore, we introduce a joint few-step distillation and reinforcement learning framework that compresses the 30-step editing model into a 4-step model and greatly accelerates model inference. Compared to open-source baselines, Mamoda2.5 achieves up to $95.9\times$ faster video editing inference. In real-world applications, Mamoda2.5 has been successfully deployed for content moderation and creative restoration tasks in advertising scenarios, achieving a 98% success rate in internal advertising video editing scenario.

CodePAD: Sequence-based Code Generation with Pushdown Automaton

In the process of code generation, it is essential to guarantee the generated code satisfies grammar constraints of programming language (PL). However, neglecting grammar constraints is a fatal drawback of commonly used sequence-based code generation. In this paper, we devise a pushdown automaton (PDA)-based methodology to address this problem, exploiting the principle that PL is a subset of PDA recognizable language and code accepted by PDA is grammatical. Specifically, we construct a PDA module and design an algorithm to constrain the generation of sequence-based models to ensure grammatical correctness. Guided by this methodology, we further propose CodePAD, a sequence-based code generation framework equipped with a PDA module, to integrate the deduction of PDA into deep learning. Additionally, this framework can leverage states of PDA deduction (including state representation, state prediction task, and joint prediction with state) to assist models in learning PDA deduction. To comprehensively evaluate CodePAD, we construct a PDA for Python and conduct extensive experiments on four public benchmark datasets. CodePAD can leverage existing sequence-based models, and we show that it can achieve 100\% grammatical correctness percentage on these benchmark datasets. Thus, it relatively improve 17\% CodeBLEU on CONALA, 8\% EM on DJANGO, and 15\% CodeBLEU on JUICE-10K compared to base models. In addition, our method significantly enhances pre-trained models, e.g., CodeBLEU of CodeGen-350M improvement from 3.21 to 21.54 on MBPP in zero-shot setting.

Learning Program Representations with a Tree-Structured Transformer

Learning vector representations for programs is a critical step in applying deep learning techniques for program understanding tasks. Various neural network models are proposed to learn from tree-structured program representations, e.g., abstract syntax tree (AST) and concrete syntax tree (CST). However, most neural architectures either fail to capture long-range dependencies which are ubiquitous in programs, or cannot learn effective representations for syntax tree nodes, making them incapable of performing the node-level prediction tasks, e.g., bug localization. In this paper, we propose Tree-Transformer, a novel recursive tree-structured neural network to learn the vector representations for source codes. We propose a multi-head attention mechanism to model the dependency between siblings and parent-children node pairs. Moreover, we propose a bi-directional propagation strategy to allow node information passing in two directions, bottom-up and top-down along trees. In this way, Tree-Transformer can learn the information of the node features as well as the global contextual information. The extensive experimental results show that our Tree-Transformer significantly outperforms the existing tree-based and graph-based program representation learning approaches in both the tree-level and node-level prediction tasks.

Self-Supervised Monocular Depth Estimation: Solving the Edge-Fattening Problem

Self-supervised monocular depth estimation (MDE) models universally suffer from the notorious edge-fattening issue. Triplet loss, as a widespread metric learning strategy, has largely succeeded in many computer vision applications. In this paper, we redesign the patch-based triplet loss in MDE to alleviate the ubiquitous edge-fattening issue. We show two drawbacks of the raw triplet loss in MDE and demonstrate our problem-driven redesigns. First, we present a min. operator based strategy applied to all negative samples, to prevent well-performing negatives sheltering the error of edge-fattening negatives. Second, we split the anchor-positive distance and anchor-negative distance from within the original triplet, which directly optimizes the positives without any mutual effect with the negatives. Extensive experiments show the combination of these two small redesigns can achieve unprecedented results: Our powerful and versatile triplet loss not only makes our model outperform all previous SoTA by a large margin, but also provides substantial performance boosts to a large number of existing models, while introducing no extra inference computation at all.

A Mid-infrared Study of Superluminous Supernovae

We present the mid-infrared (MIR) light curves (LC) of 10 superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) at $z<0.12$ based on WISE data at 3.4 and 4.6 $μ$m. Three of them, including PS15br, SN 2017ens, and SN 2017err show rebrightening which started at 200--400 days and ended at 600--1000 days, indicating the presence of dust. In four of the left seven SLSNe, dust emission was detected with monochromatic luminosities of $10^7\sim10^8\ L_\odot$ at epochs of 100--500 days based on MIR colors $W1-W2\sim1$. Among the three SLSNe which show rebrightening, we further analysed PS15br and SN 2017ens. We modeled the SEDs at 500--700 days, which gives dust temperatures of 600--1100 K, dust masses of $\gtrsim 10^{-2}\ M_\odot$, and luminosities of $10^8\sim10^9$ $L_\odot$. Considering the time delay and the huge amount of energy released, the emitting dust can hardly be pre-existing dust heated whether collisionally by shocks or radiatively by peak SLSN luminosity or shock emission. Instead, it can be newly formed dust additionally heated by the interaction of circum-stellar medium, indicated by features in their spectra and slowly declining bolometric LCs. The dust masses appear to be ten times greater than those formed in normal core-collapse supernovae at similar epochs. Combining with the analysis of SN 2018bsz by Chen et al. (2022), we suggest that SLSNe have higher dust formation efficiency, although future observations are required to reach a final conclusion.

Consistent Quality Oriented Rate Control in HEVC via Balancing Intra and Inter Frame Coding

Consistent quality oriented rate control in video coding has attracted much more attention. However, the existing efforts only focus on decreasing variations between every two adjacent frames, but neglect coding trade-off problem between intra and inter frames. In this paper, we deal with it from a new perspective, where intra frame quantization parameter (IQP) and rate control are optimized for balanced coding. First, due to the importance of intra frames, a new framework is proposed for consistent quality oriented IQP prediction, and then we remove unqualified IQP candidates using the proposed penalty term. Second, we extensively evaluate possible features, and select target bits per pixel for all remaining frames, average and standard variance of frame QPs, where equivalent acquisition methods for QP features are given. Third, predicted IQPs are clipped effectively according to bandwidth and previous information for better bit rate accuracy. Compared with High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) reference baseline, experiments demonstrate that our method reduces quality fluctuation greatly by 37.2% on frame-level standard variance of peak-signal-noise-ratio (PSNR) and 45.1% on that of structural similarity (SSIM). Moreover, it also can have satisfactory results on Rate-Distortion (R-D) performance, bit accuracy and buffer control.

Deep Geometry Post-Processing for Decompressed Point Clouds

Point cloud compression plays a crucial role in reducing the huge cost of data storage and transmission. However, distortions can be introduced into the decompressed point clouds due to quantization. In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based post-processing method to enhance the decompressed point clouds. Specifically, a voxelized point cloud is first divided into small cubes. Then, a 3D convolutional network is proposed to predict the occupancy probability for each location of a cube. We leverage both local and global contexts by generating multi-scale probabilities. These probabilities are progressively summed to predict the results in a coarse-to-fine manner. Finally, we obtain the geometry-refined point clouds based on the predicted probabilities. Different from previous methods, we deal with decompressed point clouds with huge variety of distortions using a single model. Experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly improve the quality of the decompressed point clouds, achieving 9.30dB BDPSNR gain on three representative datasets on average.

Exploiting Robust Unsupervised Video Person Re-identification

Unsupervised video person re-identification (reID) methods usually depend on global-level features. And many supervised reID methods employed local-level features and achieved significant performance improvements. However, applying local-level features to unsupervised methods may introduce an unstable performance. To improve the performance stability for unsupervised video reID, this paper introduces a general scheme fusing part models and unsupervised learning. In this scheme, the global-level feature is divided into equal local-level feature. A local-aware module is employed to explore the poentials of local-level feature for unsupervised learning. A global-aware module is proposed to overcome the disadvantages of local-level features. Features from these two modules are fused to form a robust feature representation for each input image. This feature representation has the advantages of local-level feature without suffering from its disadvantages. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on three benchmarks, including PRID2011, iLIDS-VID, and DukeMTMC-VideoReID, and the results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance. Extensive ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of proposed scheme, local-aware module and global-aware module. Feeding the Accretion Disk from the Dusty Torus in a Reddened Quasar

We present here a detailed analysis of an unusual absorption line system in the quasar SDSS J122826.79+100532.2. The absorption lines in the system have a common redshifted velocity structure starting from $v\sim0$ and extending to $\sim1,000\ \mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$, and are clearly detected in hydrogen Balmer series up to H$ι$, in metastable neutral helium triplet, and in optical lines of excited states of single ionized iron. We estimated that the absorber has a density $n_{\mathrm{H}}\approx10^{8.4}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and an ionization parameter $U\approx10^{-1.2}$, thereupon located it at $r_{\mathrm{abs}}\approx1.5$ pc from the central supermassive black hole. The inferred distance is remarkably similar to the evaporation radius for dust grains $r_{\mathrm{evap}}\approx1$ pc in the quasar. Thus the absorber may be a probe of an inflow starting from the dusty torus and feeding the accretion disk. Both the featureless continuum and the broad emission lines are heavily reddened with $E(B-V)\approx0.66$, in contrast to the narrow emission lines whose reddening is negligible. The dusty medium could be located in between the broad and narrow emission line regions, and possibly be associated with a &#39;cold&#39; narrow absorption line system detected in \ion{Ca}{2} and \ion{Na}{1} doublets nearly unshifted from the quasar systemic velocity. SDSS J122826.79+100532.2 might represent such a rare case that both the inflow and the torus could be tracked by absorption lines.

Incorporating Domain Knowledge through Task Augmentation for Front-End JavaScript Code Generation

Code generation aims to generate a code snippet automatically from natural language descriptions. Generally, the mainstream code generation methods rely on a large amount of paired training data, including both the natural language description and the code. However, in some domain-specific scenarios, building such a large paired corpus for code generation is difficult because there is no directly available pairing data, and a lot of effort is required to manually write the code descriptions to construct a high-quality training dataset. Due to the limited training data, the generation model cannot be well trained and is likely to be overfitting, making the model&#39;s performance unsatisfactory for real-world use. To this end, in this paper, we propose a task augmentation method that incorporates domain knowledge into code generation models through auxiliary tasks and a Subtoken-TranX model by extending the original TranX model to support subtoken-level code generation. To verify our proposed approach, we collect a real-world code generation dataset and conduct experiments on it. Our experimental results demonstrate that the subtoken-level TranX model outperforms the original TranX model and the Transformer model on our dataset, and the exact match accuracy of Subtoken-TranX improves significantly by 12.75% with the help of our task augmentation method. The model performance on several code categories has satisfied the requirements for application in industrial systems. Our proposed approach has been adopted by Alibaba&#39;s BizCook platform. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first domain code generation system adopted in industrial development environments.

Learning to Disentangle Scenes for Person Re-identification

There are many challenging problems in the person re-identification (ReID) task, such as the occlusion and scale variation. Existing works usually tried to solve them by employing a one-branch network. This one-branch network needs to be robust to various challenging problems, which makes this network overburdened. This paper proposes to divide-and-conquer the ReID task. For this purpose, we employ several self-supervision operations to simulate different challenging problems and handle each challenging problem using different networks. Concretely, we use the random erasing operation and propose a novel random scaling operation to generate new images with controllable characteristics. A general multi-branch network, including one master branch and two servant branches, is introduced to handle different scenes. These branches learn collaboratively and achieve different perceptive abilities. In this way, the complex scenes in the ReID task are effectively disentangled, and the burden of each branch is relieved. The results from extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performances on three ReID benchmarks and two occluded ReID benchmarks. Ablation study also shows that the proposed scheme and operations significantly improve the performance in various scenes. The code is available at https://git.openi.org.cn/zangxh/LDS.git.

Learning to Recommend Method Names with Global Context

In programming, the names for the program entities, especially for the methods, are the intuitive characteristic for understanding the functionality of the code. To ensure the readability and maintainability of the programs, method names should be named properly. Specifically, the names should be meaningful and consistent with other names used in related contexts in their codebase. In recent years, many automated approaches are proposed to suggest consistent names for methods, among which neural machine translation (NMT) based models are widely used and have achieved state-of-the-art results. However, these NMT-based models mainly focus on extracting the code-specific features from the method body or the surrounding methods, the project-specific context and documentation of the target method are ignored. We conduct a statistical analysis to explore the relationship between the method names and their contexts. Based on the statistical results, we propose GTNM, a Global Transformer-based Neural Model for method name suggestion, which considers the local context, the project-specific context, and the documentation of the method simultaneously. Experimental results on java methods show that our model can outperform the state-of-the-art results by a large margin on method name suggestion, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed model.

Learning to Represent Programs with Heterogeneous Graphs

Program source code contains complex structure information, which can be represented in structured data forms like trees or graphs. To acquire the structural information in source code, most existing researches use abstract syntax trees (AST). A group of works add additional edges to ASTs to convert source code into graphs and use graph neural networks to learn representations for program graphs. Although these works provide additional control or data flow information to ASTs for downstream tasks, they neglect an important aspect of structure information in AST itself: the different types of nodes and edges. In ASTs, different nodes contain different kinds of information like variables or control flow, and the relation between a node and all its children can also be different. To address the information of node and edge types, we bring the idea of heterogeneous graphs to learning on source code and present a new formula of building heterogeneous program graphs from ASTs with additional type information for nodes and edges. We use the ASDL grammar of programming language to define the node and edge types of program graphs. Then we use heterogeneous graph neural networks to learn on these graphs. We evaluate our approach on two tasks: code comment generation and method naming. Both tasks require reasoning on the semantics of complete code snippets. Experiment results show that our approach outperforms baseline models, including homogeneous graph-based models, showing that leveraging the type information of nodes and edges in program graphs can help in learning program semantics.

Learning to Share in Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, we study the problem of networked multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), where a number of agents are deployed as a partially connected network and each interacts only with nearby agents. Networked MARL requires all agents to make decisions in a decentralized manner to optimize a global objective with restricted communication between neighbors over the network. Inspired by the fact that sharing plays a key role in human&#39;s learning of cooperation, we propose LToS, a hierarchically decentralized MARL framework that enables agents to learn to dynamically share reward with neighbors so as to encourage agents to cooperate on the global objective through collectives. For each agent, the high-level policy learns how to share reward with neighbors to decompose the global objective, while the low-level policy learns to optimize the local objective induced by the high-level policies in the neighborhood. The two policies form a bi-level optimization and learn alternately. We empirically demonstrate that LToS outperforms existing methods in both social dilemma and networked MARL scenarios across scales.

Leveraging Application Data Constraints to Optimize Database-Backed Web Applications

Exploiting the relationships among data is a classical query optimization technique. As persistent data is increasingly being created and maintained programmatically, prior work that infers data relationships from data statistics misses an important opportunity. We present ConstrOpt, the first tool that identifies data relationships by analyzing database-backed applications. Once identified, ConstrOpt leverages the constraints to optimize the application&#39;s physical design and query execution. Instead of developing a fixed set of predefined rewriting rules, ConstrOpt employs an enumerate-test-verify technique to automatically exploit the discovered data constraints to improve query execution. Each resulting rewrite is provably equivalent to the original query. Using 14 real-world web applications, our experiments show that ConstrOpt can discover numerous data constraints from code analysis and improve real-world application performance significantly.

Multi-direction and Multi-scale Pyramid in Transformer for Video-based Pedestrian Retrieval

In video surveillance, pedestrian retrieval (also called person re-identification) is a critical task. This task aims to retrieve the pedestrian of interest from non-overlapping cameras. Recently, transformer-based models have achieved significant progress for this task. However, these models still suffer from ignoring fine-grained, part-informed information. This paper proposes a multi-direction and multi-scale Pyramid in Transformer (PiT) to solve this problem. In transformer-based architecture, each pedestrian image is split into many patches. Then, these patches are fed to transformer layers to obtain the feature representation of this image. To explore the fine-grained information, this paper proposes to apply vertical division and horizontal division on these patches to generate different-direction human parts. These parts provide more fine-grained information. To fuse multi-scale feature representation, this paper presents a pyramid structure containing global-level information and many pieces of local-level information from different scales. The feature pyramids of all the pedestrian images from the same video are fused to form the final multi-direction and multi-scale feature representation. Experimental results on two challenging video-based benchmarks, MARS and iLIDS-VID, show the proposed PiT achieves state-of-the-art performance. Nebula-I: A General Framework for Collaboratively Training Deep Learning Models on Low-Bandwidth Cloud Clusters

The ever-growing model size and scale of compute have attracted increasing interests in training deep learning models over multiple nodes. However, when it comes to training on cloud clusters, especially across remote clusters, huge challenges are faced. In this work, we introduce a general framework, Nebula-I, for collaboratively training deep learning models over remote heterogeneous clusters, the connections between which are low-bandwidth wide area networks (WANs). We took natural language processing (NLP) as an example to show how Nebula-I works in different training phases that include: a) pre-training a multilingual language model using two remote clusters; and b) fine-tuning a machine translation model using knowledge distilled from pre-trained models, which run through the most popular paradigm of recent deep learning. To balance the accuracy and communication efficiency, in Nebula-I, parameter-efficient training strategies, hybrid parallel computing methods and adaptive communication acceleration techniques are jointly applied. Meanwhile, security strategies are employed to guarantee the safety, reliability and privacy in intra-cluster computation and inter-cluster communication. Nebula-I is implemented with the PaddlePaddle deep learning framework, which can support collaborative training over heterogeneous hardware, e.g. GPU and NPU. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework could substantially maximize the training efficiency while preserving satisfactory NLP performance. By using Nebula-I, users can run large-scale training tasks over cloud clusters with minimum developments, and the utility of existed large pre-trained models could be further promoted. We also introduced new state-of-the-art results on cross-lingual natural language inference tasks, which are generated based upon a novel learning framework and Nebula-I.

Neural Texture Extraction and Distribution for Controllable Person Image Synthesis

We deal with the controllable person image synthesis task which aims to re-render a human from a reference image with explicit control over body pose and appearance. Observing that person images are highly structured, we propose to generate desired images by extracting and distributing semantic entities of reference images. To achieve this goal, a neural texture extraction and distribution operation based on double attention is described. This operation first extracts semantic neural textures from reference feature maps. Then, it distributes the extracted neural textures according to the spatial distributions learned from target poses. Our model is trained to predict human images in arbitrary poses, which encourages it to extract disentangled and expressive neural textures representing the appearance of different semantic entities. The disentangled representation further enables explicit appearance control. Neural textures of different reference images can be fused to control the appearance of the interested areas. Non-autoregressive Model for Full-line Code Completion

Code completion tools are frequently used by software developers to accelerate software development by suggesting the following code elements. Completing a sequence of code tokens (e.g., a full line of code) has been proved more efficient than predicting a single token at a time. To complete the code sequence, researchers are employing AutoRegressive (AR) decoders to generate tokens in a left-to-right, token-by-token fashion. Consequently, the prediction of the next token depends on all previously generated tokens, which leads to high latency in inference. To improve the efficiency and accuracy of full-line code completion, in this paper, we propose a Non-AutoRegressive (NAR) model for code completion boosted by a syntax-aware sampling strategy. Our experimental results on two widely used datasets suggest that our model outperforms both AR and NAR baselines on full-line code completion, and it is faster than the AR model with up to 9 times speed-up.

OctAttention: Octree-Based Large-Scale Contexts Model for Point Cloud Compression

In point cloud compression, sufficient contexts are significant for modeling the point cloud distribution. However, the contexts gathered by the previous voxel-based methods decrease when handling sparse point clouds. To address this problem, we propose a multiple-contexts deep learning framework called OctAttention employing the octree structure, a memory-efficient representation for point clouds. Our approach encodes octree symbol sequences in a lossless way by gathering the information of sibling and ancestor nodes. Expressly, we first represent point clouds with octree to reduce spatial redundancy, which is robust for point clouds with different resolutions. We then design a conditional entropy model with a large receptive field that models the sibling and ancestor contexts to exploit the strong dependency among the neighboring nodes and employ an attention mechanism to emphasize the correlated nodes in the context. Furthermore, we introduce a mask operation during training and testing to make a trade-off between encoding time and performance. Compared to the previous state-of-the-art works, our approach obtains a 10%-35% BD-Rate gain on the LiDAR benchmark (e.g. SemanticKITTI) and object point cloud dataset (e.g. MPEG 8i, MVUB), and saves 95% coding time compared to the voxel-based baseline. OpenMedIA: Open-Source Medical Image Analysis Toolbox and Benchmark under Heterogeneous AI Computing Platforms

In this paper, we present OpenMedIA, an open-source toolbox library containing a rich set of deep learning methods for medical image analysis under heterogeneous Artificial Intelligence (AI) computing platforms. Various medical image analysis methods, including 2D/3D medical image classification, segmentation, localisation, and detection, have been included in the toolbox with PyTorch and/or MindSpore implementations under heterogeneous NVIDIA and Huawei Ascend computing systems. To our best knowledge, OpenMedIA is the first open-source algorithm library providing compared PyTorch and MindSpore implementations and results on several benchmark datasets. Self-Supervised Arbitrary-Scale Point Clouds Upsampling via Implicit Neural Representation

Point clouds upsampling is a challenging issue to generate dense and uniform point clouds from the given sparse input. Most existing methods either take the end-to-end supervised learning based manner, where large amounts of pairs of sparse input and dense ground-truth are exploited as supervision information; or treat up-scaling of different scale factors as independent tasks, and have to build multiple networks to handle upsampling with varying factors. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that achieves self-supervised and magnification-flexible point clouds upsampling simultaneously. We formulate point clouds upsampling as the task of seeking nearest projection points on the implicit surface for seed points. To this end, we define two implicit neural functions to estimate projection direction and distance respectively, which can be trained by two pretext learning tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that our self-supervised learning based scheme achieves competitive or even better performance than supervised learning based state-of-the-art methods. Specializing Versatile Skill Libraries using Local Mixture of Experts

A long-cherished vision in robotics is to equip robots with skills that match the versatility and precision of humans. For example, when playing table tennis, a robot should be capable of returning the ball in various ways while precisely placing it at the desired location. A common approach to model such versatile behavior is to use a Mixture of Experts (MoE) model, where each expert is a contextual motion primitive. However, learning such MoEs is challenging as most objectives force the model to cover the entire context space, which prevents specialization of the primitives resulting in rather low-quality components. Starting from maximum entropy reinforcement learning (RL), we decompose the objective into optimizing an individual lower bound per mixture component. Further, we introduce a curriculum by allowing the components to focus on a local context region, enabling the model to learn highly accurate skill representations. To this end, we use local context distributions that are adapted jointly with the expert primitives. Our lower bound advocates an iterative addition of new components, where new components will concentrate on local context regions not covered by the current MoE. This local and incremental learning results in a modular MoE model of high accuracy and versatility, where both properties can be scaled by adding more components on the fly. We demonstrate this by an extensive ablation and on two challenging simulated robot skill learning tasks. We compare our achieved performance to LaDiPS and HiREPS, a known hierarchical policy search method for learning diverse skills.

What does Transformer learn about source code?

In the field of source code processing, the transformer-based representation models have shown great powerfulness and have achieved state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance in many tasks. Although the transformer models process the sequential source code, pieces of evidence show that they may capture the structural information (\eg, in the syntax tree, data flow, control flow, \etc) as well. We propose the aggregated attention score, a method to investigate the structural information learned by the transformer. We also put forward the aggregated attention graph, a new way to extract program graphs from the pre-trained models automatically. We measure our methods from multiple perspectives. Furthermore, based on our empirical findings, we use the automatically extracted graphs to replace those ingenious manual designed graphs in the Variable Misuse task. Experimental results show that the semantic graphs we extracted automatically are greatly meaningful and effective, which provide a new perspective for us to understand and use the information contained in the model.

Winning solutions and post-challenge analyses of the ChaLearn AutoDL challenge 2019

This paper reports the results and post-challenge analyses of ChaLearn&#39;s AutoDL challenge series, which helped sorting out a profusion of AutoML solutions for Deep Learning (DL) that had been introduced in a variety of settings, but lacked fair comparisons. All input data modalities (time series, images, videos, text, tabular) were formatted as tensors and all tasks were multi-label classification problems. Code submissions were executed on hidden tasks, with limited time and computational resources, pushing solutions that get results quickly. In this setting, DL methods dominated, though popular Neural Architecture Search (NAS) was impractical. Solutions relied on fine-tuned pre-trained networks, with architectures matching data modality. Post-challenge tests did not reveal improvements beyond the imposed time limit. While no component is particularly original or novel, a high level modular organization emerged featuring a &#34;meta-learner&#34;, &#34;data ingestor&#34;, &#34;model selector&#34;, &#34;model/learner&#34;, and &#34;evaluator&#34;. This modularity enabled ablation studies, which revealed the importance of (off-platform) meta-learning, ensembling, and efficient data management. Experiments on heterogeneous module combinations further confirm the (local) optimality of the winning solutions. Our challenge legacy includes an ever-lasting benchmark (http://autodl.chalearn.org), the open-sourced code of the winners, and a free &#34;AutoDL self-service&#34;.

A Mid-infrared Flare in the Active Galaxy MCG-02-04-026: Dust Echo of a Nuclear Transient Event

We report the discovery of a mid-infrared (MIR) flare using WISE data in the center of the nearby Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-02-04-026. The MIR flare began in the first half of 2014, peaked around the end of 2015, and faded in 2017. During these years, energy more than $7\times10^{50}$ erg was released in the infrared, and the flare&#39;s MIR color was generally turning red. We detected neither optical nor ultraviolet (UV) variation corresponding to the MIR flare based on available data. We explained the MIR flare using a dust echo model in which the radiative transfer is involved. The MIR flare can be well explained as thermal reradiation from dust heated by UV-optical photons of a primary nuclear transient event. Although the transient event was not seen directly due to dust obscuration, we can infer that it may produce a total energy of at least $\sim10^{51}$ erg, most of which was released in less than $\sim$3 years. The nature of the transient event could be a stellar tidal disruption event by the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), or a sudden enhancement of the existing accretion flow onto the SMBH, or a supernova which was particularly bright.

A Self-Attentional Neural Architecture for Code Completion with Multi-Task Learning

Code completion, one of the most useful features in the Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), can accelerate software development by suggesting the libraries, APIs, and method names in real-time. Recent studies have shown that statistical language models can improve the performance of code completion tools through learning from large-scale software repositories. However, these models suffer from three major drawbacks: a) The hierarchical structural information of the programs is not fully utilized in the program&#39;s representation; b) In programs, the semantic relationships can be very long. Existing recurrent neural networks based language models are not sufficient to model the long-term dependency. c) Existing approaches perform a specific task in one model, which leads to the underuse of the information from related tasks. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a self-attentional neural architecture for code completion with multi-task learning. To utilize the hierarchical structural information of the programs, we present a novel method that considers the path from the predicting node to the root node. To capture the long-term dependency in the input programs, we adopt a self-attentional architecture based network as the base language model. To enable the knowledge sharing between related tasks, we creatively propose a Multi-Task Learning (MTL) framework to learn two related tasks in code completion jointly. Experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

A Technical Report for VIPriors Image Classification Challenge

Image classification has always been a hot and challenging task. This paper is a brief report to our submission to the VIPriors Image Classification Challenge. In this challenge, the difficulty is how to train the model from scratch without any pretrained weight. In our method, several strong backbones and multiple loss functions are used to learn more representative features. To improve the models&#39; generalization and robustness, efficient image augmentation strategies are utilized, like autoaugment and cutmix. Finally, ensemble learning is used to increase the performance of the models. The final Top-1 accuracy of our team DeepBlueAI is 0.7015, ranking second in the leaderboard.

C3DVQA: Full-Reference Video Quality Assessment with 3D Convolutional Neural Network

Traditional video quality assessment (VQA) methods evaluate localized picture quality and video score is predicted by temporally aggregating frame scores. However, video quality exhibits different characteristics from static image quality due to the existence of temporal masking effects. In this paper, we present a novel architecture, namely C3DVQA, that uses Convolutional Neural Network with 3D kernels (C3D) for full-reference VQA task. C3DVQA combines feature learning and score pooling into one spatiotemporal feature learning process. We use 2D convolutional layers to extract spatial features and 3D convolutional layers to learn spatiotemporal features. We empirically found that 3D convolutional layers are capable to capture temporal masking effects of videos. We evaluated the proposed method on the LIVE and CSIQ datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Deep Image Spatial Transformation for Person Image Generation

Pose-guided person image generation is to transform a source person image to a target pose. This task requires spatial manipulations of source data. However, Convolutional Neural Networks are limited by the lack of ability to spatially transform the inputs. In this paper, we propose a differentiable global-flow local-attention framework to reassemble the inputs at the feature level. Specifically, our model first calculates the global correlations between sources and targets to predict flow fields. Then, the flowed local patch pairs are extracted from the feature maps to calculate the local attention coefficients. Finally, we warp the source features using a content-aware sampling method with the obtained local attention coefficients. The results of both subjective and objective experiments demonstrate the superiority of our model. Besides, additional results in video animation and view synthesis show that our model is applicable to other tasks requiring spatial transformation. Detecting Code Clones with Graph Neural Networkand Flow-Augmented Abstract Syntax Tree

Code clones are semantically similar code fragments pairs that are syntactically similar or different. Detection of code clones can help to reduce the cost of software maintenance and prevent bugs. Numerous approaches of detecting code clones have been proposed previously, but most of them focus on detecting syntactic clones and do not work well on semantic clones with different syntactic features. To detect semantic clones, researchers have tried to adopt deep learning for code clone detection to automatically learn latent semantic features from data. Especially, to leverage grammar information, several approaches used abstract syntax trees (AST) as input and achieved significant progress on code clone benchmarks in various programming languages. However, these AST-based approaches still can not fully leverage the structural information of code fragments, especially semantic information such as control flow and data flow. To leverage control and data flow information, in this paper, we build a graph representation of programs called flow-augmented abstract syntax tree (FA-AST). We construct FA-AST by augmenting original ASTs with explicit control and data flow edges. Then we apply two different types of graph neural networks (GNN) on FA-AST to measure the similarity of code pairs. As far as we have concerned, we are the first to apply graph neural networks on the domain of code clone detection. We apply our FA-AST and graph neural networks on two Java datasets: Google Code Jam and BigCloneBench. Our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on both Google Code Jam and BigCloneBench tasks.

GID-Net: Detecting Human-Object Interaction with Global and Instance Dependency

Since detecting and recognizing individual human or object are not adequate to understand the visual world, learning how humans interact with surrounding objects becomes a core technology. However, convolution operations are weak in depicting visual interactions between the instances since they only build blocks that process one local neighborhood at a time. To address this problem, we learn from human perception in observing HOIs to introduce a two-stage trainable reasoning mechanism, referred to as GID block. GID block breaks through the local neighborhoods and captures long-range dependency of pixels both in global-level and instance-level from the scene to help detecting interactions between instances. Furthermore, we conduct a multi-stream network called GID-Net, which is a human-object interaction detection framework consisting of a human branch, an object branch and an interaction branch. Semantic information in global-level and local-level are efficiently reasoned and aggregated in each of the branches. We have compared our proposed GID-Net with existing state-of-the-art methods on two public benchmarks, including V-COCO and HICO-DET. The results have showed that GID-Net outperforms the existing best-performing methods on both the above two benchmarks, validating its efficacy in detecting human-object interactions.

Multi-Mapping Image-to-Image Translation with Central Biasing Normalization

Recent advances in image-to-image translation have seen a rise in approaches generating diverse images through a single network. To indicate the target domain for a one-to-many mapping, the latent code is injected into the generator network. However, we found that the injection method leads to mode collapse because of normalization strategies. Existing normalization strategies might either cause the inconsistency of feature distribution or eliminate the effect of the latent code. To solve these problems, we propose the consistency within diversity criteria for designing the multi-mapping model. Based on the criteria, we propose central biasing normalization to inject the latent code information. Experiments show that our method can improve the quality and diversity of existing image-to-image translation models, such as StarGAN, BicycleGAN, and pix2pix.

Multi-task Learning based Pre-trained Language Model for Code Completion

Code completion is one of the most useful features in the Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), which can accelerate software development by suggesting the next probable token based on the contextual code in real-time. Recent studies have shown that statistical language modeling techniques can improve the performance of code completion tools through learning from large-scale software repositories. However, these models suffer from two major drawbacks: a) Existing research uses static embeddings, which map a word to the same vector regardless of its context. The differences in the meaning of a token in varying contexts are lost when each token is associated with a single representation; b) Existing language model based code completion models perform poor on completing identifiers, and the type information of the identifiers is ignored in most of these models. To address these challenges, in this paper, we develop a multi-task learning based pre-trained language model for code understanding and code generation with a Transformer-based neural architecture. We pre-train it with hybrid objective functions that incorporate both code understanding and code generation tasks. Then we fine-tune the pre-trained model on code completion. During the completion, our model does not directly predict the next token. Instead, we adopt multi-task learning to predict the token and its type jointly and utilize the predicted type to assist the token prediction. Experiments results on two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

RoIMix: Proposal-Fusion among Multiple Images for Underwater Object Detection

Generic object detection algorithms have proven their excellent performance in recent years. However, object detection on underwater datasets is still less explored. In contrast to generic datasets, underwater images usually have color shift and low contrast; sediment would cause blurring in underwater images. In addition, underwater creatures often appear closely to each other on images due to their living habits. To address these issues, our work investigates augmentation policies to simulate overlapping, occluded and blurred objects, and we construct a model capable of achieving better generalization. We propose an augmentation method called RoIMix, which characterizes interactions among images. Proposals extracted from different images are mixed together. Previous data augmentation methods operate on a single image while we apply RoIMix to multiple images to create enhanced samples as training data. Experiments show that our proposed method improves the performance of region-based object detectors on both Pascal VOC and URPC datasets.

SingleGAN: Image-to-Image Translation by a Single-Generator Network using Multiple Generative Adversarial Learning

Image translation is a burgeoning field in computer vision where the goal is to learn the mapping between an input image and an output image. However, most recent methods require multiple generators for modeling different domain mappings, which are inefficient and ineffective on some multi-domain image translation tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel method, SingleGAN, to perform multi-domain image-to-image translations with a single generator. We introduce the domain code to explicitly control the different generative tasks and integrate multiple optimization goals to ensure the translation. Experimental results on several unpaired datasets show superior performance of our model in translation between two domains. Besides, we explore variants of SingleGAN for different tasks, including one-to-many domain translation, many-to-many domain translation and one-to-one domain translation with multimodality. The extended experiments show the universality and extensibility of our model.

Toward Zero-Shot Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation

Recent studies have shown remarkable success in unsupervised image-to-image translation. However, if there has no access to enough images in target classes, learning a mapping from source classes to the target classes always suffers from mode collapse, which limits the application of the existing methods. In this work, we propose a zero-shot unsupervised image-to-image translation framework to address this limitation, by associating categories with their side information like attributes. To generalize the translator to previous unseen classes, we introduce two strategies for exploiting the space spanned by the semantic attributes. Specifically, we propose to preserve semantic relations to the visual space and expand attribute space by utilizing attribute vectors of unseen classes, thus encourage the translator to explore the modes of unseen classes. Quantitative and qualitative results on different datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. Moreover, we demonstrate that our framework can be applied to many tasks, such as zero-shot classification and fashion design.

Towards Full-line Code Completion with Neural Language Models

A code completion system suggests future code elements to developers given a partially-complete code snippet. Code completion is one of the most useful features in Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). Currently, most code completion techniques predict a single token at a time. In this paper, we take a further step and discuss the probability of directly completing a whole line of code instead of a single token. We believe suggesting longer code sequences can further improve the efficiency of developers. Recently neural language models have been adopted as a preferred approach for code completion, and we believe these models can still be applied to full-line code completion with a few improvements. We conduct our experiments on two real-world python corpora and evaluate existing neural models based on source code tokens or syntactical actions. The results show that neural language models can achieve acceptable results on our tasks, with significant room for improvements.
