Generating Functions for Lacunary Legendre and Legendre-like Polynomials

The use of operational methods of different nature is shown to be a fairly powerful tool to study different problems regarding the theory of Legendre and Legendre-like polynomials. We show how the use of the well known integral representations linking Hermite and Legendre like polynomials and of operational technique allow the derivation of new properties regarding the generating functions, repeated derivatives of irrational functions and so on. We finally extend the method of the integral transform to functions with more than one variable and derive new expansion criteria of a given function in terms of Legendre polynomials.

Deep Saturated Free Electron Laser Oscillators and Frozen Spikes

We analyze the behavior of Free Electron Laser (FEL) oscillators operating in the deep saturated regime and point out the formation of sub-peaks of the optical pulse. They are very stable configurations, having a width corresponding to a coherence length. We speculate on the physical mechanisms underlying their growth and attempt an identification with FEL mode locked structures associated with Super Modes. Their impact on the intra-cavity nonlinear harmonic generation is also discussed along with the possibility of exploiting them as cavity out-coupler.

Laser Heater and seeded Free Electron Laser

In this paper we consider the effect of laser heater on a seeded Free Electron Laser. We develop a model embedding the effect of the energy modulation induced by the heater with those due to the seeding. The present analysis is compatible with the experimental results obtained at FERMI displaying secondary maxima with increasing heater intensity. The treatment developed in the paper confirms and extends previous analyses and put in evidence further effects which can be tested in future experiments.

Relativistic Wave Equations: An Operational Approach

The use of operator methods of algebraic nature is shown to be a very powerful tool to deal with different forms of relativistic wave equations. The methods provide either exact or approximate solutions for various forms of differential equations, such as relativistic Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon and Dirac. We discuss the free particle hypotheses and those relevant to particles subject to non-trivial potentials. In the latter case we will show how the proposed method leads to easily implementable numerical algorithms.

Capillary Network, Cancer and Kleiber Law

We develop a heuristic model embedding Kleiber and Murray laws to describe mass growth, metastasis and vascularization in cancer. We analyze the relevant dynamics using different evolution equations (Verhulst, Gompertz and others). Their extension to reaction diffusion equation of the Fisher type is then used to describe the relevant metastatic spreading in space. Regarding this last point, we suggest that cancer diffusion may be regulated by Levy flights mechanisms and discuss the possibility that the associated reaction diffusion equations are of the fractional type, with the fractional coefficient being determined by the fractal nature of the capillary evolution.

Photoluminescence decay of silicon nanocrystals and Lévy stable distributions

Recent experiments have shown that photoluminescence decay of silicon nanocrystals can be described by the stretched exponential function. We show here that the associated decay probability rate is the one-sided Levy stable distribution which describes well the experimental data. The relevance of these conclusions to the underlying stochastic processes is discussed in terms of Levy processes.

Bunching coefficients in Echo-Enabled Harmonic Generation

Coulombian diffusion determines a dilution of bunching coefficients in Free Electron Laser seeded devices. From the mathematical point of view the effect can be modeled through a heat type equation, which can be merged with the ordinary Liouville equation, ruling the evolution of the longitudinal phase space beam distribution. We will show that the use of analytical tools like the Generalized Bessel Functions and algebraic techniques for the solution of evolution problems may provide a useful method of analysis and shine further light on the physical aspects of the underlying mechanisms.

IRIDE White Book, An Interdisciplinary Research Infrastructure based on Dual Electron linacs&lasers

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. IRIDE is also intended to be realized in subsequent stages of development depending on the assigned priorities.

Symbolic methods for the evaluation of sum rules of Bessel functions

The use of the umbral formalism allows a significant simplification of the derivation of sum rules involving products of special functions and polynomials. We rederive in this way known sum rules and addition theorems for Bessel functions. Furthermore, we obtain a set of new closed form sum rules involving various special polynomials and Bessel functions. The examples we consider are relevant for applications ranging from plasma physics to quantum optics.

The Higher-Order Heat-Type Equations via signed Lévy stable and generalized Airy functions

We study the higher-order heat-type equation with first time and M-th spatial partial derivatives, M = 2, 3, ... . We demonstrate that its exact solutions for M even can be constructed with the help of signed Levy stable functions. For M odd the same role is played by a special generalization of Airy Ai function that we introduce and study. This permits one to generate the exact and explicit heat kernels pertaining to these equations. We examine analytically and graphically the spacial and temporary evolution of particular solutions for simple initial conditions.

Chebyshev polynomials and generalized complex numbers

The generalized complex numbers can be realized in terms of $2\times2$ or higher-order matrices and can be exploited to get different ways of looking at the trigonometric functions. Since Chebyshev polynomials are linked to the power of matrices and to trigonometric functions, we take the quite natural step to discuss them in the context of the theory of generalized complex numbers. We also briefly discuss the two-variable Chebyshev polynomials and their link with the third-order Hermite polynomials.

preprint2012arXiv

Dirac factorization and fractional calculus

We show that the Dirac factorization method can be successfully employed to treat problems involving operators raised to a fractional power. The technique we adopt is based on an extension of the Pauli matrices and the properties of the roots of unity. We also comment about the possibility of using the method to linearize evolution equations containing the $n$-th root of differential operators and make a comparison with other techniques involving suitable transforms.

Operator solutions for fractional Fokker-Planck equations

We obtain exact results for fractional equations of Fokker-Planck type using evolution operator method. We employ exact forms of one-sided Levy stable distributions to generate a set of self-reproducing solutions. Explicit cases are reported and studied for various fractional order of derivatives, different initial conditions, and for different versions of Fokker-Planck operators.

Relativistic harmonic oscillator

We consider the relativistic generalization of the harmonic oscillator problem by addressing different questions regarding its classical aspects. We treat the problem using the formalism of Hamiltonian mechanics. A Lie algebraic technique is used to solve the associated Liouville equations, yielding the phase space evolution of an ensemble of relativistic particles, subject to a "harmonic" potential. The non-harmonic distortion of the spatial and momentum distributions due to the intrinsic non-linear nature of the relativistic contributions are discussed. We analyze the relativistic dynamics induced by two types of Hamiltonian, which can ascribed to those of harmonic oscillators type. Finally, we briefly discuss the quantum aspects of the problem by considering possible strategies for the solution of the associated Salpeter equation.

SASE FEL Storage Ring

We explore the possibility of operating a SASE FEL with a Storage Ring. We use a semi-analytical model to obtain the evolution inside the undulator by taking into account the interplay on the laser dynamics due to the induced energy spread and to the radiation damping. We obtain the Renieri's limit for the stationary output power and discuss the possibility of including in our model the effect of the beam instabilities.

preprint2012arXiv

The Dirac factorization method and the harmonic oscillator

We apply the Dirac factorization method to the nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator and, more in general, to Hamiltonians with a generic potential. It is shown that this procedure naturally leads to a supersymmetric formulation of the problems under study. It is also speculated on the physical meaning underlying this method and it is suggested that the vacuum field fluctuations can be viewed as the spontaneous emission of the associated two-level system, whose quantization is due to the noncommuting nature of the harmonic oscillator canonical variables.

The Humbert-Bessel functions, Stirling numbers and probability distributions in coincidence problems

The Humbert-Bessel are multi-index functions with various applications in electromagnetism. New families of functions sharing some similarities with Bessel functions are often introduced in the mathematical literature, but at a closer analysis they are not new, in the strict sense of the word, and are shown to be expressible in terms of already discussed forms. This is indeed the case of the re-modified Bessel functions, whose properties have been analyzed within the context of coincidence problems in probability theory. In this paper we show that these functions are particular cases of the Humbert-Bessel ones.

The spherical Bessel and Struve functions and operational methods

We review some aspects of the theory of spherical Bessel functions and Struve functions by means of an operational procedure essentially of umbral nature, capable of providing the straightforward evaluation of their definite integrals and of successive derivatives. The method we propose allows indeed the formal reduction of these family of functions to elementary ones of Gaussian type. We study the problem in general terms and present a formalism capable of providing a unifying point of view including Anger and Weber functions too. The link to the multi-index Bessel functions is also briefly discussed.

Fel Oscillators with Tapered Undulators: Inclusion of Harmonic Generation and Pulse Propagation

We review the theory of FEL oscillators operating with tapered undulators. We consider the case of a uniform tapering and introduce a parameter which characterizes the effect of the tapering on the gain and on the saturation intensity. We analyze the effect of the tapering on the FEL dynamics by including the pulse propagation effects too. We analyze the importance of tapering as a tool to model the optical pulse shapes and to control the higher harmonic intensities.

Relativistic equations with fractional and pseudo-differential operators

In this paper we use different techniques from the fractional and pseudo-operators calculus to solve partial differential equations involving operators with non integer exponents. We apply the method to equations resembling generalizations of the heat equations and discuss the possibility of extending the procedure to the relativistic Schrödinger and Dirac equations.

Repeated derivatives of composite functions and generalizations of the Leibniz rule

We use the properties of Hermite and Kampé de Fériet polynomials to get closed forms for the repeated derivatives of functions whose argument is a quadratic or higher-order polynomial. The results we obtain are extended to product of functions of the above argument, thus giving rise to expressions which can formally be interpreted as generalizations of the familiar Leibniz rule. Finally, examples of practical interest are discussed.

Slices and Ellipse Geometry

We discuss the new problems emerging in charged beam transport for SASE FEL dynamics. The optimization of the magnetic transport system for future devices requires new concepts associated with the slice emittance and the slice phase space distribution. We study the problem of electron beam slice matching and guiding in transport devices for SASE FEL emission discussing matching criteria and how the associated design of the electron transport line may affect the FEL output performances. We analyze different matching strategies by studying the relevant effect on the FEL output characteristics.

The parabolic trigonometric functions and the Chebyshev radicals

The parabolic trigonometric functions have recently been introduced as an intermediate step between circular and hyperbolic functions. They have been shown to be expressible in terms of irrational functions, linked to the solution of third degree algebraic equations. We show the link of the parabolic trigonometric functions with the Chebyshev radicals and also prove that further generalized forms of trigonometric functions, providing the natural solutions of the quintic algebraic equation, can be defined. We also discuss the link of this family of functions with the modular elliptic functions. 1

The Ramanujan master theorem and its implications for special functions

We study a number of possible extensions of the Ramanujan master theorem, which is formulated here by using methods of Umbral nature. We discuss the implications of the procedure for the theory of special functions, like the derivation of formulae concerning the integrals of products of families of Bessel functions and the successive derivatives of Bessel type functions. We stress also that the procedure we propose allows a unified treatment of many problems appearing in applications, which can formally be reduced to the evaluation of exponential- or Gaussian-like integrals.

Energy Phase Correlation and Pulse Dynamics in Short Bunch High Gain FELs

We analyze the dynamics of Free Electron Laser (FEL) devices, operating with a bunched beam exhibiting a longitudinal phase space correlation. We show that the presence of an energy-position correlation term is responsible for very interesting effects like an enhancement of the peak output power, a shortening of the laser pulses and an increase of the non linearly generated harmonic intensities. We conjecture that the mechanism is due to a kind of energy tapering effect associated with the correlation. We discuss the difference of the dynamics with respect to an ordinary undulator tapering and the relative advantages.

Introduction to the Physics of Free Electron Laser and Comparison with Conventional Laser Sources

This report is a primer introduction on the sources of coherent syncrotron radiation from FELs compared to conventional lasers. Even though the underlying mechanisms are different, FELs can be considered a laser source to all effects. In fact FEL is based on the stimulated emission of virtual photons by a relativistic electron beam, passing through an undulator/wiggler, much like conventional lasers exploit the stimulated emission by an atomic/molecular system on which a population inversion has been realized. FEL operation is illustrated by means of the usual set of parameters (gain, saturation intensity...) used to describe the functioning of conventional lasers.

Linear Potentials, Airy Wave Packets and Airy Transform

The solution of the Schrodinger equation with a linear potential is considered. We use algebraic methods to obtain the explicit form of the solution for the explicitly time dependent Hamiltonian and discuss the general conditions which allow us to get solutions in terms of the Airy functions, yelding non spreading wave packets. We analyze the relevant physical meaning of these solutions and give examples of their applications. We discuss the analogy between Airy and Gauss-Weirestrass transform.

Operational methods and Lorentz-type equations of motion

We propose an operational method for the solution of differential equations involving vector products. The technique we propose is based on the use of the evolution operator, defined in such a way that the wealth of techniques developed within the context of quantum mechanics can also be exploited for classical problems. We discuss the application of the method to the solution of the Lorentz-type equations.

Slice emittance, projected emittance and properties of the FEL SASE radiation

The existence of a characteristic coherence length in FEL SASE Physics determines the independent lasing of different portions, namely the slices, of the electron bunch. Each slice may be characterized by different phase space properties (not necessarily equal emittances and Twiss coefficients). This fact opens new questions on the concept of beam matching and how the various portions of the beam contribute to the performances of the output radiation, including those associated with the transverse coherence.

The Euler Legacy to Modern Physics

Particular families of special functions, conceived as purely mathematical devices between the end of XVIII and the beginning of XIX centuries, have played a crucial role in the development of many aspects of modern Physics. This is indeed the case of the Euler gamma function, which has been one of the key elements paving the way to string theories, furthermore the Euler-Riemann Zeta function has played a decisive role in the development of renormalization theories. The ideas of Euler and later those of Riemann, Ramanujan and of other, less popular, mathematicians have therefore provided the mathematical apparatus ideally suited to explore, and eventually solve, problems of fundamental importance in modern Physics. The mathematical foundations of the theory of renormalization trace back to the work on divergent series by Euler and by mathematicians of two centuries ago. Feynman, Dyson, Schwinger... rediscovered most of these mathematical "curiosities" and were able to develop a new and powerful way of looking at physical phenomena.

The FEL SASE operation, bunch compression and the beam heater

We discuss the conditions required for an optimal SASE FEL operation when bunch compression techniques are exploited to enhance the bunch peak current. We discuss the case of velocity bunching and magnetic bunch compression. With the reference to the latter technique we provide a quantitative estimate of the amount of laser heater power necessary to suppress the micro-bunching instability without creating any problem to the SASE dynamics

Touchard like polynomials and generalized Stirling numbers

The theory of Touchard polynomials is generalized using a method based on the definition of exponential operators, which extend the notion of the shift operator. The proposed technique, along with the use of the relevant operational formalism, allows the straightforward derivation of properties of this family of polynomials and their relationship to different forms of Stirling numbers.
