Non-Debye relaxations: The ups and downs of the stretched exponential vs Mittag-Leffler's matchings

Experimental data collected to provide us with information on the course of dielectric relaxation phenomena are got according to two distinct schemes: one can measure either the time decay of depolarization current or use methods of the broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Both sets of data are usually fitted by time or frequency dependent elementary functions which in turn may be analytically transformed among themselves using the Laplace transform and compared each other. This leads to the question on comparability of results got using just mentioned experimental procedures. If we would like to do that in the time domain we have to go beyond widely accepted Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts approximation and get acquainted with description using the Mittag-Leffler functions. To convince the reader that the latter is not difficult to understand we propose to look at the problem from the point of view of objects sitting in the heart of stochastic processes approach to relaxation. These are the characteristic exponents which are read out from the standard non-Debye frequency dependent patterns. Characteristic functions appear to be expressed in terms of elementary functions which asymptotic analysis is simple. This opens new possibility to compare behavior of functions used to describe non-Debye relaxations. Results of such done comparison are fully confirmed by calculations which use the powerful apparatus of the Mittag-Leffler functions.

On the properties of Laplace transform originating from one-sided Lévy stable laws

We consider the conventional Laplace transform of $f(x)$, denoted by $\mathcal{L}[f(x); p]~\equiv~F(p)=\int_{0}^{\infty} e^{-p x} f(x) dx$ with ${\rm \mathfrak{Re}}(p) > 0$. For $0 < α< 1$ we furnish the closed form expressions for the inverse Laplace transforms $\mathcal{L}^{-1}[F(p^α); x]$ and $\mathcal{L}^{-1}[p^{α-1}F(p^α); x]$. In both cases they involve definite integration with kernels which are appropriately rescaled one-sided Lévy stable probability distribution functions $g_α(x)$, $0 < α< 1$, $x > 0$. Since $g_α(x)$ are exactly and explicitly known for rational $α$, \textit{i.e.} for $α= l/k$ with $l, k=1, 2, \ldots$, $l < k$, our results extend the known and tabulated case of $α= 1/2$ to any rational $0 < α< 1$. We examine the integral kernels of this procedure as well as the resulting two kinds of Lévy integral transformations.

Relativistic Wave Equations: An Operational Approach

The use of operator methods of algebraic nature is shown to be a very powerful tool to deal with different forms of relativistic wave equations. The methods provide either exact or approximate solutions for various forms of differential equations, such as relativistic Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon and Dirac. We discuss the free particle hypotheses and those relevant to particles subject to non-trivial potentials. In the latter case we will show how the proposed method leads to easily implementable numerical algorithms.

On the Laplace transform of the Fréchet distribution

We calculate exactly the Laplace transform of the Fréchet distribution in the form $γx^{-(1+γ)} \exp(-x^{-γ})$, $γ> 0$, $0 \leq x < \infty$, for arbitrary rational values of the shape parameter $γ$, i.e. for $γ= l/k$ with $l, k = 1,2, \ldots$. The method employs the inverse Mellin transform. The closed form expressions are obtained in terms of Meijer G functions and their graphical illustrations are provided. A rescaled Fréchet distribution serves as a kernel of Fréchet integral transform. It turns out that the Fréchet transform of one-sided Lévy law reproduces the Fréchet distribution.

Photoluminescence decay of silicon nanocrystals and Lévy stable distributions

Recent experiments have shown that photoluminescence decay of silicon nanocrystals can be described by the stretched exponential function. We show here that the associated decay probability rate is the one-sided Levy stable distribution which describes well the experimental data. The relevance of these conclusions to the underlying stochastic processes is discussed in terms of Levy processes.

Exact and explicit evaluation of Brezin-Hikami kernels

We present exact and explicit form of the kernels $hat{K}(x, y)$ appearing in the theory of energy correlations in the ensembles of Hermitian random matrices with Gaussian probability distribution, see E. Brezin and S. Hikami, Phys. Rev. E 57, 4140 and E 58, 7176 (1998). In obtaining this result we have exploited the analogy with the method of producing exact forms of two-sided, symmetric Levy stable laws, presented by us recently. This result is valid for arbitrary values of parameters in question. We furnish analytical and graphical representations of physical quantities calculated from $hat{K}(x, y)$'s.

Multidimensional Catalan and related numbers as Hausdorff moments

We study integral representation of so-called $d$-dimensional Catalan numbers $C_{d}(n)$, defined by $[\prod_{p=0}^{d-1} \frac{p!}{(n+p)!}] (d n)!$, $d = 2, 3, ...$, $n=0, 1, ...$. We prove that the $C_{d}(n)$'s are the $n$th Hausdorff power moments of positive functions $W_{d}(x)$ defined on $x\in[0, d^d]$. We construct exact and explicit forms of $W_{d}(x)$ and demonstrate that they can be expressed as combinations of $d-1$ hypergeometric functions of type $_{d-1}F_{d-2}$ of argument $x/d^d$. These solutions are unique. We analyse them analytically and graphically. A combinatorially relevant, specific extension of $C_{d}(n)$ for $d$ even in the form $D_{d}(n)=[\prod_{p = 0}^{d-1} \frac{p!}{(n+p)!}] [\prod_{q = 0}^{d/2 - 1} \frac{(2 n + 2 q)!}{(2 q)!}]$ is analyzed along the same lines.

Symbolic methods for the evaluation of sum rules of Bessel functions

The use of the umbral formalism allows a significant simplification of the derivation of sum rules involving products of special functions and polynomials. We rederive in this way known sum rules and addition theorems for Bessel functions. Furthermore, we obtain a set of new closed form sum rules involving various special polynomials and Bessel functions. The examples we consider are relevant for applications ranging from plasma physics to quantum optics.

The Higher-Order Heat-Type Equations via signed Lévy stable and generalized Airy functions

We study the higher-order heat-type equation with first time and M-th spatial partial derivatives, M = 2, 3, ... . We demonstrate that its exact solutions for M even can be constructed with the help of signed Levy stable functions. For M odd the same role is played by a special generalization of Airy Ai function that we introduce and study. This permits one to generate the exact and explicit heat kernels pertaining to these equations. We examine analytically and graphically the spacial and temporary evolution of particular solutions for simple initial conditions.

Graph model of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra

We consider an algebraic formulation of Quantum Theory and develop a combinatorial model of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra structure. It is shown that by lifting this structure to the richer algebra of graph operator calculus, we gain a simple interpretation involving, for example, the natural composition of graphs. This provides a deeper insight into the algebraic structure of Quantum Theory and sheds light on the intrinsic combinatorial underpinning of its abstract formalism.

Levy stable distributions via associated integral transform

We present a method of generation of exact and explicit forms of one-sided, heavy-tailed Levy stable probability distributions g_α(x), 0 \leq x < \infty, 0 < α< 1. We demonstrate that the knowledge of one such a distribution g_α(x) suffices to obtain exactly g_{α^{p}}(x), p=2, 3,... Similarly, from known g_α(x) and g_β(x), 0 < α, β< 1, we obtain g_{αβ}(x). The method is based on the construction of the integral operator, called Levy transform, which implements the above operations. For αrational, α= l/k with l < k, we reproduce in this manner many of the recently obtained exact results for g_{l/k}(x). This approach can be also recast as an application of the Efros theorem for generalized Laplace convolutions. It relies solely on efficient definite integration.

Operator solutions for fractional Fokker-Planck equations

We obtain exact results for fractional equations of Fokker-Planck type using evolution operator method. We employ exact forms of one-sided Levy stable distributions to generate a set of self-reproducing solutions. Explicit cases are reported and studied for various fractional order of derivatives, different initial conditions, and for different versions of Fokker-Planck operators.

The spherical Bessel and Struve functions and operational methods

We review some aspects of the theory of spherical Bessel functions and Struve functions by means of an operational procedure essentially of umbral nature, capable of providing the straightforward evaluation of their definite integrals and of successive derivatives. The method we propose allows indeed the formal reduction of these family of functions to elementary ones of Gaussian type. We study the problem in general terms and present a formalism capable of providing a unifying point of view including Anger and Weber functions too. The link to the multi-index Bessel functions is also briefly discussed.

Exact and explicit probability densities for one-sided Levy stable distributions

We study functions g_α(x) which are one-sided, heavy-tailed Levy stable probability distributions of index α, 0< α<1, of fundamental importance in random systems, for anomalous diffusion and fractional kinetics. We furnish exact and explicit expression for g_α(x), 0 \leq x < \infty, satisfying \int_{0}^{\infty} exp(-p x) g_α(x) dx = exp(-p^α), p>0, for all α= l/k < 1, with k and l positive integers. We reproduce all the known results given by k\leq 4 and present many new exact solutions for k > 4, all expressed in terms of known functions. This will allow a 'fine-tuning' of αin order to adapt g_α(x) to a given experimental situation.

Levy stable two-sided distributions: exact and explicit densities for asymmetric case

We study the one-dimensional Levy stable density distributions g(alpha, beta; x) for -infty < x < infty, for rational values of index alpha and the asymmetry parameter beta: alpha = l/k and beta = (l - 2r)/k, where l, k and r are positive integers such that 0 < l/k < 1 for 0 <= r <= l and 1 < l/k <= 2 for l-k <= r <= k. We treat both symmetric (beta = 0) and asymmetric (beta neq 0) cases. We furnish exact and explicit forms of g(alpha, beta; x) in terms of known functions for any admissible values of alpha and beta specified by a triple of integers k, l and r. We reproduce all the previously known exact results and we study analytically and graphically many new examples. We point out instances of experimental and statistical data that could be described by our solutions.

Quasiclassical Asymptotics and Coherent States for Bounded Discrete Spectra

We consider discrete spectra of bound states for non-relativistic motion in attractive potentials V_σ(x) = -|V_{0}| |x|^{-σ}, 0 < σ\leq 2. For these potentials the quasiclassical approximation for n -> \infty predicts quantized energy levels e_σ(n) of a bounded spectrum varying as e_σ(n) ~ -n^{-2σ/(2-σ)}. We construct collective quantum states using the set of wavefunctions of the discrete spectrum taking into account this asymptotic behaviour. We give examples of states that are normalizable and satisfy the resolution of unity, using explicit positive functions. These are coherent states in the sense of Klauder and their completeness is achieved via exact solutions of Hausdorff moment problems, obtained by combining Laplace and Mellin transform methods. For σin the range 0<σ\leq 2/3 we present exact implementations of such states for the parametrization σ= 2(k-l)/(3k-l), with k and l positive integers satisfying k>l.

Repeated derivatives of composite functions and generalizations of the Leibniz rule

We use the properties of Hermite and Kampé de Fériet polynomials to get closed forms for the repeated derivatives of functions whose argument is a quadratic or higher-order polynomial. The results we obtain are extended to product of functions of the above argument, thus giving rise to expressions which can formally be interpreted as generalizations of the familiar Leibniz rule. Finally, examples of practical interest are discussed.

The Ramanujan master theorem and its implications for special functions

We study a number of possible extensions of the Ramanujan master theorem, which is formulated here by using methods of Umbral nature. We discuss the implications of the procedure for the theory of special functions, like the derivation of formulae concerning the integrals of products of families of Bessel functions and the successive derivatives of Bessel type functions. We stress also that the procedure we propose allows a unified treatment of many problems appearing in applications, which can formally be reduced to the evaluation of exponential- or Gaussian-like integrals.

Combinatorial Algebra for second-quantized Quantum Theory

We describe an algebra G of diagrams which faithfully gives a diagrammatic representation of the structures of both the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra H - the associative algebra of the creation and annihilation operators of quantum mechanics - and U(L_H), the enveloping algebra of the Heisenberg Lie algebra L_H. We show explicitly how G may be endowed with the structure of a Hopf algebra, which is also mirrored in the structure of U(L_H). While both H and U(L_H) are images of G, the algebra G has a richer structure and therefore embodies a finer combinatorial realization of the creation-annihilation system, of which it provides a concrete model.

Combinatorial Deformations of Algebras: Twisting and Perturbations

The framework used to prove the multiplicative law deformation of the algebra of Feynman-Bender diagrams is a \textit{twisted shifted dual law} (in fact, twice). We give here a clear interpretation of its two parameters. The crossing parameter is a deformation of the tensor structure whereas the superposition parameters is a perturbation of the shuffle coproduct of Hoffman type which, in turn, can be interpreted as the diagonal restriction of a superproduct. Here, we systematically detail these constructions.

Generation of coherent states of photon-added type via pathway of eigenfunctions

We obtain and investigate the regular eigenfunctions of simple differential operators x^r d^{r+1}/dx^{r+1}, r=1, 2, ... with the eigenvalues equal to one. With the help of these eigenfunctions we construct a non-unitary analogue of boson displacement operator which will be acting on the vacuum. In this way we generate collective quantum states of the Fock space which are normalized and equipped with the resolution of unity with the positive weight functions that we obtain explicitly. These states are thus coherent states in the sense of Klauder. They span the truncated Fock space without first r lowest-lying basis states: |0>, |1>, ..., |r-1>. These states are squeezed, are sub-Poissonian in nature and are reminiscent of photon-added states at Agarwal et al.

Statistics on Graphs, Exponential Formula and Combinatorial Physics

The concern of this paper is a famous combinatorial formula known under the name "exponential formula". It occurs quite naturally in many contexts (physics, mathematics, computer science). Roughly speaking, it expresses that the exponential generating function of a whole structure is equal to the exponential of those of connected substructures. Keeping this descriptive statement as a guideline, we develop a general framework to handle many different situations in which the exponential formula can be applied.

Laguerre-type derivatives: Dobinski relations and combinatorial identities

We consider properties of the operators D(r,M)=a^r(a^†a)^M (which we call generalized Laguerre-type derivatives), with r=1,2,..., M=0,1,..., where a and a^†are boson annihilation and creation operators respectively, satisfying [a,a^†]=1. We obtain explicit formulas for the normally ordered form of arbitrary Taylor-expandable functions of D(r,M) with the help of an operator relation which generalizes the Dobinski formula. Coherent state expectation values of certain operator functions of D(r,M) turn out to be generating functions of combinatorial numbers. In many cases the corresponding combinatorial structures can be explicitly identified.

On certain non-unique solutions of the Stieltjes moment problem

We construct explicit solutions of a number of Stieltjes moment problems based on moments of the form $ρ_{1}^{(r)}(n)=(2rn)!$ and $ρ_{2}^{(r)}(n)=[(rn)!]^{2}$, $r=1,2,...$, $n=0,1,2,...$, \textit{i.e.} we find functions $W^{(r)}_{1,2}(x)>0$ satisfying $\int_{0}^{\infty}x^{n}W^{(r)}_{1,2}(x)dx = ρ_{1,2}^{(r)}(n)$. It is shown using criteria for uniqueness and non-uniqueness (Carleman, Krein, Berg, Pakes, Stoyanov) that for $r>1$ both $ρ_{1,2}^{(r)}(n)$ give rise to non-unique solutions. Examples of such solutions are constructed using the technique of the inverse Mellin transform supplemented by a Mellin convolution. We outline a general method of generating non-unique solutions for moment problems generalizing $ρ_{1,2}^{(r)}(n)$, such as the product $ρ_{1}^{(r)}(n)\cdotρ_{2}^{(r)}(n)$ and $[(rn)!]^{p}$, $p=3,4,...$.

Some useful combinatorial formulae for bosonic operators

We give a general expression for the normally ordered form of a function F(w(a,a*)) where w is a function of boson annihilation and creation operators satisfying [a,a*]=1. The expectation value of this expression in a coherent state becomes an exact generating function of Feynman-type graphs associated with the zero-dimensional Quantum Field Theory defined by F(w). This enables one to enumerate explicitly the graphs of given order in the realm of combinatorially defined sequences. We give several examples of the use of this technique, including the applications to Kerr-type and superfluidity-type hamiltonians.

Exponential Operators, Dobinski Relations and Summability

We investigate properties of exponential operators preserving the particle number using combinatorial methods developed in order to solve the boson normal ordering problem. In particular, we apply generalized Dobinski relations and methods of multivariate Bell polynomials which enable us to understand the meaning of perturbation-like expansions of exponential operators. Such expansions, obtained as formal power series, are everywhere divergent but the Pade summation method is shown to give results which very well agree with exact solutions got for simplified quantum models of the one mode bosonic systems.

Temporally stable coherent states for infinite well and Pöschl-Teller potentials

This paper is a direct illustration of a construction of coherent states which has been recently proposed by two of us (JPG and JK). We have chosen the example of a particle trapped in an infinite square-well and also in Pöschl-Teller potentials of the trigonometric type. In the construction of the corresponding coherent states, we take advantage of the simplicity of the solutions, which ultimately stems from the fact they share a common SU(1,1) symmetry à la Barut--Girardello. Many properties of these states are then studied, both from mathematical and from physical points of view.
