From exponential counting to pair correlations

We prove an abstract result on the correlations of pairs of elements in an exponentially growing discrete subset $\mathcal E$ of $[0,+\infty[\,$ endowed with a weight function. Assume that there exist $α\in\mathbb R$, $c,δ>0$ such that, as $t\to+\infty$, the weighted number $\widetildeω(t)$ of elements of $\mathcal E$ that are not greater than $t$ is equivalent to $c\,t^αe^{δt}$. We prove that the distribution function of the unscaled differences of elements of $\mathcal E$ is $t\mapsto\fracδ2\,e^{-|t|}$, and that, under an error term assumption on $\widetildeω(t)$, the pair correlation with a scaling with polynomial growth exhibits a Poissonian behaviour. We apply this result to answer a question of Pollicott and Sharp on the pair correlations of closed geodesics and common perpendiculars in negatively curved manifolds and metric graphs.

A classification of $\mathbb C$-Fuchsian subgroups of Picard modular groups

Given an imaginary quadratic extension $K$ of $\mathbb Q$, we give a classification of the maximal nonelementary subgroups of the Picard modular group $\operatorname{PSU}_{1,2}(\mathcal O_K)$ preserving a complex geodesic in the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2_\mathbb C$. Complementing work of Holzapfel, Chinburg-Stover and Möller-Toledo, we show that these maximal $\mathbb C$-Fuchsian subgroups are arithmetic, arising from a quaternion algebra $\Big(\!\begin{array}{c} D\,,D_K\\\hline\mathbb QQ\end{array} \!\Big)$ for some explicit $D\in\mathbb N-\{0\}$ and $D_K$ the discriminant of $K$. We thus prove the existence of infinitely many orbits of $K$-arithmetic chains in the hypersphere of $\mathbb P_2(\mathbb C)$.

Counting and equidistribution in Heisenberg groups

We strongly develop the relationship between complex hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on complex hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension $2$. We prove a Mertens' formula for the integer points over a quadratic imaginary number fields $K$ in the light cone of Hermitian forms, as well as an equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over $K$ in Heisenberg groups. We give a counting formula for the cubic points over $K$ in the complex projective plane whose Galois conjugates are orthogonal and isotropic for a given Hermitian form over $K$, and a counting and equidistribution result for arithmetic chains in the Heisenberg group when their Cygan diameter tends to $0$.

Counting common perpendicular arcs in negative curvature

Let $D^-$ and $D^+$ be properly immersed closed locally convex subsets of a Riemannian manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature. Using mixing properties of the geodesic flow, we give an asymptotic formula as $t\to+\infty$ for the number of common perpendiculars of length at most $t$ from $D^-$ to $D^+$, counted with multiplicities, and we prove the equidistribution in the outer and inner unit normal bundles of $D^-$ and $D^+$ of the tangent vectors at the endpoints of the common perpendiculars. When the manifold is compact with exponential decay of correlations or arithmetic with finite volume, we give an error term for the asymptotic. As an application, we give an asymptotic formula for the number of connected components of the domain of discontinuity of Kleinian groups as their diameter goes to $0$.

Logarithm laws for equilibrium states in negative curvature

Let $M$ be a pinched negatively curved Riemannian manifold, whose unit tangent bundle is endowed with a Gibbs measure $m_F$ associated to a potential $F$. We compute the Hausdorff dimension of the conditional measures of $m_F$. We study the $m_F$-almost sure asymptotic penetration behaviour of locally geodesic lines of $M$ into small neighbourhoods of closed geodesics, and of other compact (locally) convex subsets of $M$. We prove Khintchine-type and logarithm law-type results for the spiraling of geodesic lines around these objects. As an arithmetic consequence, we give almost sure Diophantine approximation results of real numbers by quadratic irrationals with respect to general Hölder quasi-invariant measures.

Counting arcs in negative curvature

Let M be a complete Riemannian manifold with negative curvature, and let C_-, C_+ be two properly immersed closed convex subsets of M. We survey the asymptotic behaviour of the number of common perpendiculars of length at most s from C_- to C_+, giving error terms and counting with weights, starting from the work of Huber, Herrmann, Margulis and ending with the works of the authors. We describe the relationship with counting problems in circle packings of Kontorovich, Oh, Shah. We survey the tools used to obtain the precise asymptotics (Bowen-Margulis and Gibbs measures, skinning measures). We describe several arithmetic applications, in particular the ones by the authors on the asymptotics of the number of representations of integers by binary quadratic, Hermitian or Hamiltonian forms.

Counting orbits of integral points in families of affine homogeneous varieties and diagonal flows

In this paper, we study the distribution of integral points on parametric families of affine homogeneous varieties. By the work of Borel and Harish-Chandra, the set of integral points on each such variety consists of finitely many orbits of arithmetic groups, and we establish an asymptotic formula (on average) for the number of the orbits indexed by their Siegel weights. In particular, we deduce asymptotic formulas for the number of inequivalent integral representations by decomposable forms and by norm forms in division algebras, and for the weighted number of equivalence classes of integral points on sections of quadratic surfaces. Our arguments use the exponential mixing property of diagonal flows on homogeneous spaces.

Equilibrium states in negative curvature

With their origin in thermodynamics and symbolic dynamics, Gibbs measures are crucial tools to study the ergodic theory of the geodesic flow on negatively curved manifolds. We develop a framework (through Patterson-Sullivan densities) allowing us to get rid of compactness assumptions on the manifold, and prove many existence, uniqueness and finiteness results of Gibbs measures. We give many applications, to the Variational Principle, the counting and equidistribution of orbit points and periods, the unique ergodicity of the strong unstable foliation and the classification of Gibbs densities on some Riemannian covers.

On the arithmetic and geometry of binary Hamiltonian forms

Given an indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian form $f$ with coefficients in a maximal order of a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb Q$, we give a precise asymptotic equivalent to the number of nonequivalent representations, satisfying some congruence properties, of the rational integers with absolute value at most $s$ by $f$, as $s$ tends to $+\infty$. We compute the volumes of hyperbolic 5-manifolds constructed by quaternions using Eisenstein series. In the Appendix, V. Emery computes these volumes using Prasad's general formula. We use hyperbolic geometry in dimension 5 to describe the reduction theory of both definite and indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian forms.

On the arithmetic of crossratios and generalised Mertens' formulas

We develop the relation between hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic equidistribution problems that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on real hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension up to 5. We prove generalisations of Mertens' formula for quadratic imaginary number fields and definite quaternion algebras over the rational numbers, counting results of quadratic irrationals with respect to two different natural complexities, and counting results of representations of (algebraic) integers by binary quadratic, Hermitian and Hamiltonian forms with error bounds. For each such statement, we prove an equidistribution result of the corresponding arithmetically defined points. Furthermore, we study the asymptotic properties of crossratios of such points, and expand Pollicott's recent results on the Schottky-Klein prime functions.

Logarithm laws for strong unstable foliations in negative curvature and non-Archimedian Diophantine approximation

Given for instance a finite volume negatively curved Riemannian manifold $M$, we give a precise relation between the logarithmic growth rates of the excursions into cusps neighborhoods of the strong unstable leaves of negatively recurrent unit vectors of $M$ and their linear divergence rates under the geodesic flow. As an application to non-Archimedian Diophantine approximation in positive characteristic, we relate the growth of the orbits of lattices under one-parameter unipotent subgroups of $\GL_2(\wh K)$ with approximation exponents and continued fraction expansions of elements of the field $\wh K$ of formal Laurent series over a finite field.

Sur les Automorphismes de Groupes Libres et de Groupes de Surface

The special linear groups, the mapping class groups of surfaces, the outer autormorphism groups of free groups appear in numerous domains. Their analogies, developped in particular in K. Vogtmann's work, have been written about a lot. In this report, we concentrate on the contractible spaces on which these groups act in an analogous way, on the common properties of their subgroups, and on the similar (or conjecturally similar) properties of their asymptotic geometry.

Spiraling spectra of geodesic lines in negatively curved manifolds

Given a negatively curved geodesic metric space M, we study the asymptotic penetration behaviour of geodesic lines of M in small neighbourhoods of closed geodesics and of other compact convex subsets of M. We define a spiraling spectrum which gives precise information on the asymptotic spiraling lengths of geodesic lines around these objects. We prove analogs of the theorems of Dirichlet, Hall and Cusick in this context. As a consequence, we obtain Diophantine approximation results of real numbers, complex numbers, or elements of the Heisenberg group by irrational quadratic ones.

On the almost sure spiraling of geodesics in negatively curved manifolds

Given a negatively curved geodesic metric space $M$, we study the statistical asymptotic penetration behavior of (locally) geodesic lines of $M$ in small neighborhoods of points, of closed geodesics, and of other compact (locally) convex subsets of $M$. We prove Khintchine-type and logarithme law-type results for the spiraling of geodesic lines around these objets. As a consequence in the tree setting, we obtain Diophantine approximation results of elements of non-archimedian local fields by quadratic irrational ones.

Prescribing the behaviour of geodesics in negative curvature

Given a family of (almost) disjoint strictly convex subsets of a complete negatively curved Riemannian manifold M, such as balls, horoballs, tubular neighborhoods of totally geodesic submanifolds, etc, the aim of this paper is to construct geodesic rays or lines in M which have exactly once an exactly prescribed (big enough) penetration in one of them, and otherwise avoid (or do not enter too much in) them. Several applications are given, including a definite improvement of the unclouding problem of [PP1], the prescription of heights of geodesic lines in a finite volume such M, or of spiraling times around a closed geodesic in a closed such M. We also prove that the Hall ray phenomenon described by Hall in special arithmetic situations and by Schmidt-Sheingorn for hyperbolic surfaces is in fact only a negative curvature property.

Dynamique sur le rayon modulaire et fractions continues en caractéristique $p$

Let $\wh K$ be the field of formal Laurent series in $X^{-1}$ over the finite field $k$, and let $A$ be the ring of polynomials in $X$ over $k$. One of the main results of the paper is to give a particularly nice coding of the geodesic flow on the quotient of the Bruhat-Tits tree $\TT$ of ${\rm PGL}\_2(\wh K)$ by ${\rm PGL}\_2(A)$, by using the continued fraction expansion of the endpoints of the geodesic lines in $\TT$ (the space of ends of $\TT$ identifies with $\PP\_1(\wh K)$). This allows in particular to prove in a dynamical way the invariance of the Haar measure by the Artin map.

Sur le codage du flot géodésique dans un arbre

Given a tree $T$ and a group $\Ga$ of automorphisms of $T$, we study the markovian properties of the geodesic flow on the quotient by $\Ga$ of the space of geodesics of $T$. For instance, when $T$ is the Bruhat-Tits tree of a semi-simple connected algebraic group $\underline{G}$ of rank one over a non archimedian local field $\wh K$, and $\Ga$ is a (possibly non uniform) lattice in $\underline{G}(\wh K)$, we prove that the type preserving geodesic flow is Bernoulli with finite entropy. Under some mild assumptions, we prove that if the quotient geodesic flow is mixing for a probability Patterson-Sullivan-Bowen-Margulis measure, then it is loosely Bernoulli.
