Towards Implicit Aggregation: Robust Image Representation for Place Recognition in the Transformer Era

Visual place recognition (VPR) is typically regarded as a specific image retrieval task, whose core lies in representing images as global descriptors. Over the past decade, dominant VPR methods (e.g., NetVLAD) have followed a paradigm that first extracts the patch features/tokens of the input image using a backbone, and then aggregates these patch features into a global descriptor via an aggregator. This backbone-plus-aggregator paradigm has achieved overwhelming dominance in the CNN era and remains widely used in transformer-based models. In this paper, however, we argue that a dedicated aggregator is not necessary in the transformer era, that is, we can obtain robust global descriptors only with the backbone. Specifically, we introduce some learnable aggregation tokens, which are prepended to the patch tokens before a particular transformer block. All these tokens will be jointly processed and interact globally via the intrinsic self-attention mechanism, implicitly aggregating useful information within the patch tokens to the aggregation tokens. Finally, we only take these aggregation tokens from the last output tokens and concatenate them as the global representation. Although implicit aggregation can provide robust global descriptors in an extremely simple manner, where and how to insert additional tokens, as well as the initialization of tokens, remains an open issue worthy of further exploration. To this end, we also propose the optimal token insertion strategy and token initialization method derived from empirical studies. Experimental results show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods on several VPR datasets with higher efficiency and ranks 1st on the MSLS challenge leaderboard. Assessment of Deep Learning-based Heart Rate Estimation using Remote Photoplethysmography under Different Illuminations

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) monitors heart rate without requiring physical contact, which allows for a wide variety of applications. Deep learning-based rPPG have demonstrated superior performance over the traditional approaches in controlled context. However, the lighting situation in indoor space is typically complex, with uneven light distribution and frequent variations in illumination. It lacks a fair comparison of different methods under different illuminations using the same dataset. In this paper, we present a public dataset, namely the BH-rPPG dataset, which contains data from thirty five subjects under three illuminations: low, medium, and high illumination. We also provide the ground truth heart rate measured by an oximeter. We evaluate the performance of three deep learning-based methods (Deepphys, rPPGNet, and Physnet) to that of four traditional methods (CHROM, GREEN, ICA, and POS) using two public datasets: the UBFC-rPPG dataset and the BH-rPPG dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that traditional methods are generally more resistant to fluctuating illuminations. We found that the Physnet achieves lowest mean absolute error (MAE) among deep learning-based method under medium illumination, whereas the CHROM achieves 1.04 beats per minute (BPM), outperforming the Physnet by 80$\%$. Additionally, we investigate potential methods for improving performance of deep learning-based methods. We find that brightness augmentation make model more robust to variation illumination. These findings suggest that while developing deep learning-based heart rate estimation algorithms, illumination variation should be taken into account. This work serves as a benchmark for rPPG performance evaluation and it opens a pathway for future investigation into deep learning-based rPPG under illumination variations.

Gaze-Vergence-Controlled See-Through Vision in Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) see-through vision is an interesting research topic since it enables users to see through a wall and see the occluded objects. Most existing research focuses on the visual effects of see-through vision, while the interaction method is less studied. However, we argue that using common interaction modalities, e.g., midair click and speech, may not be the optimal way to control see-through vision. This is because when we want to see through something, it is physically related to our gaze depth/vergence and thus should be naturally controlled by the eyes. Following this idea, this paper proposes a novel gaze-vergence-controlled (GVC) see-through vision technique in AR. Since gaze depth is needed, we build a gaze tracking module with two infrared cameras and the corresponding algorithm and assemble it into the Microsoft HoloLens 2 to achieve gaze depth estimation. We then propose two different GVC modes for see-through vision to fit different scenarios. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our gaze depth estimation is efficient and accurate. By comparing with conventional interaction modalities, our GVC techniques are also shown to be superior in terms of efficiency and more preferred by users. Finally, we present four example applications of gaze-vergence-controlled see-through vision.

GazeOnce: Real-Time Multi-Person Gaze Estimation

Appearance-based gaze estimation aims to predict the 3D eye gaze direction from a single image. While recent deep learning-based approaches have demonstrated excellent performance, they usually assume one calibrated face in each input image and cannot output multi-person gaze in real time. However, simultaneous gaze estimation for multiple people in the wild is necessary for real-world applications. In this paper, we propose the first one-stage end-to-end gaze estimation method, GazeOnce, which is capable of simultaneously predicting gaze directions for multiple faces (>10) in an image. In addition, we design a sophisticated data generation pipeline and propose a new dataset, MPSGaze, which contains full images of multiple people with 3D gaze ground truth. Experimental results demonstrate that our unified framework not only offers a faster speed, but also provides a lower gaze estimation error compared with state-of-the-art methods. This technique can be useful in real-time applications with multiple users.

Layout-Bridging Text-to-Image Synthesis

The crux of text-to-image synthesis stems from the difficulty of preserving the cross-modality semantic consistency between the input text and the synthesized image. Typical methods, which seek to model the text-to-image mapping directly, could only capture keywords in the text that indicates common objects or actions but fail to learn their spatial distribution patterns. An effective way to circumvent this limitation is to generate an image layout as guidance, which is attempted by a few methods. Nevertheless, these methods fail to generate practically effective layouts due to the diversity of input text and object location. In this paper we push for effective modeling in both text-to-layout generation and layout-to-image synthesis. Specifically, we formulate the text-to-layout generation as a sequence-to-sequence modeling task, and build our model upon Transformer to learn the spatial relationships between objects by modeling the sequential dependencies between them. In the stage of layout-to-image synthesis, we focus on learning the textual-visual semantic alignment per object in the layout to precisely incorporate the input text into the layout-to-image synthesizing process. To evaluate the quality of generated layout, we design a new metric specifically, dubbed Layout Quality Score, which considers both the absolute distribution errors of bounding boxes in the layout and the mutual spatial relationships between them. Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our method over state-of-the-art methods on both predicting the layout and synthesizing the image from the given text.

Polarization Guided Specular Reflection Separation

Since specular reflection often exists in the real captured images and causes deviation between the recorded color and intrinsic color, specular reflection separation can bring advantages to multiple applications that require consistent object surface appearance. However, due to the color of an object is significantly influenced by the color of the illumination, the existing researches still suffer from the near-duplicate challenge, that is, the separation becomes unstable when the illumination color is close to the surface color. In this paper, we derive a polarization guided model to incorporate the polarization information into a designed iteration optimization separation strategy to separate the specular reflection. Based on the analysis of polarization, we propose a polarization guided model to generate a polarization chromaticity image, which is able to reveal the geometrical profile of the input image in complex scenarios, such as diversity of illumination. The polarization chromaticity image can accurately cluster the pixels with similar diffuse color. We further use the specular separation of all these clusters as an implicit prior to ensure that the diffuse components will not be mistakenly separated as the specular components. With the polarization guided model, we reformulate the specular reflection separation into a unified optimization function which can be solved by the ADMM strategy. The specular reflection will be detected and separated jointly by RGB and polarimetric information. Both qualitative and quantitative experimental results have shown that our method can faithfully separate the specular reflection, especially in some challenging scenarios.

Semantic Guided Single Image Reflection Removal

Reflection is common in images capturing scenes behind a glass window, which is not only a disturbance visually but also influence the performance of other computer vision algorithms. Single image reflection removal is an ill-posed problem because the color at each pixel needs to be separated into two values, i.e., the desired clear background and the reflection. To solve it, existing methods propose priors such as smoothness, color consistency. However, the low-level priors are not reliable in complex scenes, for instance, when capturing a real outdoor scene through a window, both the foreground and background contain both smooth and sharp area and a variety of color. In this paper, inspired by the fact that human can separate the two layers easily by recognizing the objects, we use the object semantic as guidance to force the same semantic object belong to the same layer. Extensive experiments on different datasets show that adding the semantic information offers a significant improvement to reflection separation. We also demonstrate the applications of the proposed method to other computer vision tasks.

Explainable Diabetic Retinopathy Detection and Retinal Image Generation

Though deep learning has shown successful performance in classifying the label and severity stage of certain diseases, most of them give few explanations on how to make predictions. Inspired by Koch's Postulates, the foundation in evidence-based medicine (EBM) to identify the pathogen, we propose to exploit the interpretability of deep learning application in medical diagnosis. By determining and isolating the neuron activation patterns on which diabetic retinopathy (DR) detector relies to make decisions, we demonstrate the direct relation between the isolated neuron activation and lesions for a pathological explanation. To be specific, we first define novel pathological descriptors using activated neurons of the DR detector to encode both spatial and appearance information of lesions. Then, to visualize the symptom encoded in the descriptor, we propose Patho-GAN, a new network to synthesize medically plausible retinal images. By manipulating these descriptors, we could even arbitrarily control the position, quantity, and categories of generated lesions. We also show that our synthesized images carry the symptoms directly related to diabetic retinopathy diagnosis. Our generated images are both qualitatively and quantitatively superior to the ones by previous methods. Besides, compared to existing methods that take hours to generate an image, our second level speed endows the potential to be an effective solution for data augmentation.

A Coarse-to-Fine Adaptive Network for Appearance-Based Gaze Estimation

Human gaze is essential for various appealing applications. Aiming at more accurate gaze estimation, a series of recent works propose to utilize face and eye images simultaneously. Nevertheless, face and eye images only serve as independent or parallel feature sources in those works, the intrinsic correlation between their features is overlooked. In this paper we make the following contributions: 1) We propose a coarse-to-fine strategy which estimates a basic gaze direction from face image and refines it with corresponding residual predicted from eye images. 2) Guided by the proposed strategy, we design a framework which introduces a bi-gram model to bridge gaze residual and basic gaze direction, and an attention component to adaptively acquire suitable fine-grained feature. 3) Integrating the above innovations, we construct a coarse-to-fine adaptive network named CA-Net and achieve state-of-the-art performances on MPIIGaze and EyeDiap.

An Integrated Enhancement Solution for 24-hour Colorful Imaging

The current industry practice for 24-hour outdoor imaging is to use a silicon camera supplemented with near-infrared (NIR) illumination. This will result in color images with poor contrast at daytime and absence of chrominance at nighttime. For this dilemma, all existing solutions try to capture RGB and NIR images separately. However, they need additional hardware support and suffer from various drawbacks, including short service life, high price, specific usage scenario, etc. In this paper, we propose a novel and integrated enhancement solution that produces clear color images, whether at abundant sunlight daytime or extremely low-light nighttime. Our key idea is to separate the VIS and NIR information from mixed signals, and enhance the VIS signal adaptively with the NIR signal as assistance. To this end, we build an optical system to collect a new VIS-NIR-MIX dataset and present a physically meaningful image processing algorithm based on CNN. Extensive experiments show outstanding results, which demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution.

Attention Guided Low-light Image Enhancement with a Large Scale Low-light Simulation Dataset

Low-light image enhancement is challenging in that it needs to consider not only brightness recovery but also complex issues like color distortion and noise, which usually hide in the dark. Simply adjusting the brightness of a low-light image will inevitably amplify those artifacts. To address this difficult problem, this paper proposes a novel end-to-end attention-guided method based on multi-branch convolutional neural network. To this end, we first construct a synthetic dataset with carefully designed low-light simulation strategies. The dataset is much larger and more diverse than existing ones. With the new dataset for training, our method learns two attention maps to guide the brightness enhancement and denoising tasks respectively. The first attention map distinguishes underexposed regions from well lit regions, and the second attention map distinguishes noises from real textures. With their guidance, the proposed multi-branch decomposition-and-fusion enhancement network works in an input adaptive way. Moreover, a reinforcement-net further enhances color and contrast of the output image. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that our method can produce high fidelity enhancement results for low-light images and outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods by a large margin both quantitatively and visually.

Beyond Optimizing for Clicks: Incorporating Editorial Values in News Recommendation

With the uptake of algorithmic personalization in the news domain, news organizations increasingly trust automated systems with previously considered editorial responsibilities, e.g., prioritizing news to readers. In this paper we study an automated news recommender system in the context of a news organization's editorial values. We conduct and present two online studies with a news recommender system, which span one and a half months and involve over 1,200 users. In our first study we explore how our news recommender steers reading behavior in the context of editorial values such as serendipity, dynamism, diversity, and coverage. Next, we present an intervention study where we extend our news recommender to steer our readers to more dynamic reading behavior. We find that (i) our recommender system yields more diverse reading behavior and yields a higher coverage of articles compared to non-personalized editorial rankings, and (ii) we can successfully incorporate dynamism in our recommender system as a re-ranking method, effectively steering our readers to more dynamic articles without hurting our recommender system's accuracy.

CPGAN: Full-Spectrum Content-Parsing Generative Adversarial Networks for Text-to-Image Synthesis

Typical methods for text-to-image synthesis seek to design effective generative architecture to model the text-to-image mapping directly. It is fairly arduous due to the cross-modality translation. In this paper we circumvent this problem by focusing on parsing the content of both the input text and the synthesized image thoroughly to model the text-to-image consistency in the semantic level. Particularly, we design a memory structure to parse the textual content by exploring semantic correspondence between each word in the vocabulary to its various visual contexts across relevant images during text encoding. Meanwhile, the synthesized image is parsed to learn its semantics in an object-aware manner. Moreover, we customize a conditional discriminator to model the fine-grained correlations between words and image sub-regions to push for the text-image semantic alignment. Extensive experiments on COCO dataset manifest that our model advances the state-of-the-art performance significantly (from 35.69 to 52.73 in Inception Score).

Fast Enhancement for Non-Uniform Illumination Images using Light-weight CNNs

This paper proposes a new light-weight convolutional neural network (5k parameters) for non-uniform illumination image enhancement to handle color, exposure, contrast, noise and artifacts, etc., simultaneously and effectively. More concretely, the input image is first enhanced using Retinex model from dual different aspects (enhancing under-exposure and suppressing over-exposure), respectively. Then, these two enhanced results and the original image are fused to obtain an image with satisfactory brightness, contrast and details. Finally, the extra noise and compression artifacts are removed to get the final result. To train this network, we propose a semi-supervised retouching solution and construct a new dataset (82k images) contains various scenes and light conditions. Our model can enhance 0.5 mega-pixel (like 600*800) images in real time (50 fps), which is faster than existing enhancement methods. Extensive experiments show that our solution is fast and effective to deal with non-uniform illumination images.

Reflection Backdoor: A Natural Backdoor Attack on Deep Neural Networks

Recent studies have shown that DNNs can be compromised by backdoor attacks crafted at training time. A backdoor attack installs a backdoor into the victim model by injecting a backdoor pattern into a small proportion of the training data. At test time, the victim model behaves normally on clean test data, yet consistently predicts a specific (likely incorrect) target class whenever the backdoor pattern is present in a test example. While existing backdoor attacks are effective, they are not stealthy. The modifications made on training data or labels are often suspicious and can be easily detected by simple data filtering or human inspection. In this paper, we present a new type of backdoor attack inspired by an important natural phenomenon: reflection. Using mathematical modeling of physical reflection models, we propose reflection backdoor (Refool) to plant reflections as backdoor into a victim model. We demonstrate on 3 computer vision tasks and 5 datasets that, Refool can attack state-of-the-art DNNs with high success rate, and is resistant to state-of-the-art backdoor defenses.

Unsupervised Learning for Intrinsic Image Decomposition from a Single Image

Intrinsic image decomposition, which is an essential task in computer vision, aims to infer the reflectance and shading of the scene. It is challenging since it needs to separate one image into two components. To tackle this, conventional methods introduce various priors to constrain the solution, yet with limited performance. Meanwhile, the problem is typically solved by supervised learning methods, which is actually not an ideal solution since obtaining ground truth reflectance and shading for massive general natural scenes is challenging and even impossible. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised intrinsic image decomposition framework, which relies on neither labeled training data nor hand-crafted priors. Instead, it directly learns the latent feature of reflectance and shading from unsupervised and uncorrelated data. To enable this, we explore the independence between reflectance and shading, the domain invariant content constraint and the physical constraint. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real image datasets demonstrate consistently superior performance of the proposed method.

Varied fusion reaction probability induced by ion stopping modification in laser-driven plasma with different temperature

The dynamics of nuclear reaction in plasma is a fundamental issue in many high energy density researches, such as the astrophysical reactions and the inertial confinement fusion. The effective reaction cross-sections and ion stopping power in plasma need to be taken into account to analyze the reactivity. In this research, we have experimentally investigated the from D-D reactions from interactions between deuteron beams and deuterated polystyrene (CD) plasma, driven by two laser pulses respectively. The neutron yields, plasma density and deuteron energy loss in plasma have been measured, and the plasma temperature and deuteron stopping power have been analyzed from simulations. It is shown that, compared with a cold target, the reaction probability in plasma conditions can be enhanced or suppressed, which is ascribed to the deuteron stopping power modifications in plasma. In hotter CD plasma, the energy loss of moderate energetic deuterons reduces, which leads to higher D-D reaction probability, while the contrary happens in colder plasma. This work provides new understanding of fusion reactions in plasma environment.

Pathological Evidence Exploration in Deep Retinal Image Diagnosis

Though deep learning has shown successful performance in classifying the label and severity stage of certain disease, most of them give few evidence on how to make prediction. Here, we propose to exploit the interpretability of deep learning application in medical diagnosis. Inspired by Koch's Postulates, a well-known strategy in medical research to identify the property of pathogen, we define a pathological descriptor that can be extracted from the activated neurons of a diabetic retinopathy detector. To visualize the symptom and feature encoded in this descriptor, we propose a GAN based method to synthesize pathological retinal image given the descriptor and a binary vessel segmentation. Besides, with this descriptor, we can arbitrarily manipulate the position and quantity of lesions. As verified by a panel of 5 licensed ophthalmologists, our synthesized images carry the symptoms that are directly related to diabetic retinopathy diagnosis. The panel survey also shows that our generated images is both qualitatively and quantitatively superior to existing methods.

A Sodium laser guide star coupling efficiency measurement method

Large telescope's adaptive optics (AO) system requires one or several bright artificial laser guide stars to improve its sky coverage. The recent advent of high power sodium laser is perfect for such application. However, besides the output power, other parameters of the laser also have significant impact on the brightness of the generated sodium laser guide star mostly in non-linear relationships. When tuning and optimizing these parameters it is necessary to tune based on a laser guide star generation performance metric. Although return photon flux is widely used, variability of atmosphere and sodium layer make it difficult to compare from site to site even within short time period for the same site. A new metric, coupling efficiency is adopted in our field tests. In this paper, we will introduce our method for measuring the coupling efficiency of a 20W class pulse sodium laser for AO application during field tests that were conducted during 2013-2015.

Teaching Robots to Do Object Assembly using Multi-modal 3D Vision

The motivation of this paper is to develop a smart system using multi-modal vision for next-generation mechanical assembly. It includes two phases where in the first phase human beings teach the assembly structure to a robot and in the second phase the robot finds objects and grasps and assembles them using AI planning. The crucial part of the system is the precision of 3D visual detection and the paper presents multi-modal approaches to meet the requirements: AR markers are used in the teaching phase since human beings can actively control the process. Point cloud matching and geometric constraints are used in the robot execution phase to avoid unexpected noises. Experiments are performed to examine the precision and correctness of the approaches. The study is practical: The developed approaches are integrated with graph model-based motion planning, implemented on an industrial robots and applicable to real-world scenarios.

Experimental Demonstration of Phase Modulation and Motion Sensing Using Graphene-Integrated Metasurfaces

Plasmonic metasurfaces are able to modify the wavefront by altering the light intensity, phase and polarization state. Active plasmonic metasurfaces would allow dynamic modulation of the wavefront which give rise to interesting application such as beam-steering, holograms and tunable waveplates. Graphene is an interesting material with dynamic property which can be controlled by electrical gating at an ultra-fast speed. We use a graphene-integrated metasurface to induce a tunable phase change to the wavefront. The metasurface supports a Fano resonance which produces high-quality resonances around 7.7 microns. The phase change is measured using a Michleson interferometry setup. It is shown that the reflection phase can change up to 55 degrees. In particular the phase can change by 28 degrees while the amplitude is nearly constant. The anisotropic optical response of the metasurface is used to modulate the ellipticity of the reflected wave in response to an incident field at 45 degree. We show a proof of concept application of our system in potentially ultra-fast laser interferometry with sub-micron accuracy.

A further extension to multiple view midpoint triangulation, for both pinhole and affine camera cases, is also presented based on such camera factorizations.

Correlated Topological Insulators with Mixed Valence

We propose the local density approximation (LDA)+Gutzwiller method incorporating Green's function scheme to study the topological physics of correlated materials from the first-principles. Applying this method to typical mixed valence materials SmB6, we found its non-trivial Z2 topology, indicating that SmB6 is a strongly correlated topological insulator (TI). The unique feature of this compound is that its surface states contain three Dirac cones in contrast to most known TIs.

Correlation effects in the electronic structure of the Ni-based superconducting KNi2S2

The LDA plus Gutzwiller variational method is used to investigate the groundstate physical properties of the newly discovered superconducting KNi2S2. Five Ni-3d Wannier-orbital basis are constructed by the density-functional theory, to combine with local Coulomb interaction to describe the normal state electronic structure of Ni-based superconductor. The band structure and the mass enhanced are studied based on a multiorbital Hubbard model by using Gutzwiller approximation method. Our results indicate that the correlation effects lead to the mass enhancement of KNi2S2. Different from the band structure calculated from the LDA results, there are three energy bands across the Fermi level along the X-Z line due to the existence of the correlation effects, which induces a very complicated Fermi surface along the X-Z line. We have also investigated the variation of the quasi-particle weight factor with the hole or electron doping and found that the mass enhancement character has been maintained with the doping.

Optical properties and Mechanical properties of C, Si, Ge and 3C-SiC Materials Calculated from First Principles Theory

First-principles calculations based on Density functional theory (DFT) and Heyd, Scuseria and Ernzerhof (HSE) adopt PBE approximation-a new version of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). It has studied lattice parameter, electronic structure, optical properties and mechanical properties of materials, including diamond-C and zinc-blende structure of Si, Ge, 3C-SiC. The result of HSE calculation is obviously superior to DFT calculation and accord well with the existing experimental values. It indicates that they are indirect bandgap materials from the figure of band structure and density of states. The bandgap which it calculated using HSE accords well with the existing experimental values except Ge. In the calculation of optical property, it shows that they correspond with the existing experimental values from the imaginary part of analytical dielectric function to the refractive index and adsorption coefficient. It demonstrates that they exists the corresponding relationship among the peak of the imaginary part of analytical dielectric function, the refractive index and adsorption coefficient. The optical property has a direct relationship with the distribution of crystal bandgap and electronic state density. From the results of mechanical properties it can know that they are brittle materials. Though the hardness and stiffness of 3C-SiC is lower than diamond, it is superior to the materials of Si, Ge as excellent semiconductor materials. In addition, the mechanical anisotropy of four materials is inconspicuous; the anisotropy of Diamond-C is very inconspicuous from anisotropic properties of Young modulus.

Topological Structure of Urban Street Networks from the Perspective of Degree Correlations

Many complex networks demonstrate a phenomenon of striking degree correlations, i.e., a node tends to link to other nodes with similar (or dissimilar) degrees. From the perspective of degree correlations, this paper attempts to characterize topological structures of urban street networks. We adopted six urban street networks (three European and three North American), and converted them into network topologies in which nodes and edges respectively represent individual streets and street intersections, and compared the network topologies to three reference network topologies (biological, technological, and social). The urban street network topologies (with the exception of Manhattan) showed a consistent pattern that distinctly differs from the three reference networks. The topologies of urban street networks lack striking degree correlations in general. Through reshuffling the network topologies towards for example maximum or minimum degree correlations while retaining the initial degree distributions, we found that all the surrogate topologies of the urban street networks, as well as the reference ones, tended to deviate from small world properties. This implies that the initial degree correlations do not have any positive or negative effect on the networks' performance or functions. Transversal Propagation Behaviors of Helical Edge States In a QSH System

The transversal propagation of the edge states in a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system are classified by decay characteristic quantity $λ$. Two different modes of the helical edge states exhibit distinct behaviors. The penetration depth is momentum dependent in normal edge states. The finite size gap decays monotonously with sample width, leading to the normal size effect. In contrast, the penetration depth maintains a uniform minimal value in the special edge states with much shorter length. The finite size gap decays non-monotonously with width, leading to the anomalous finite size effect. Real materials are compared in the phase diagram, which explicitly demonstrates their differences. We also propose an intuitive way to search the special edge states in two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system.

Connectivity of edge and surface states in topological insulators

The edge states of a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator form a one-dimensional helical metal which is responsible for the transport property of the QSH insulator. Conceptually, such a one-dimensional helical metal can be attached to any scattering region as the usual metallic leads. We study the analytical property of the scattering matrix for such a conceptual multiterminal scattering problem in the presence of time reversal invariance. As a result, several theorems on the connectivity property of helical edge states in two-dimensional QSH systems as well as surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators are obtained. Without addressing real model details, these theorems, which are phenomenologically obtained, emphasize the general connectivity property of topological edge/surface states from the mere time reversal symmetry restriction.

Spin waves in the block checkerboard antiferromagnetic phase

Motivated by the discovery of new family 122 iron-based superconductors, we present the theoretical results on the ground state phase diagram, spin wave and dynamic structure factor of the extended $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model. In the reasonable physical parameter region of $K_{2}Fe_{4}Se_{5}$, we fi{}nd the block checkerboard antiferromagnetic order phase is stable. There are two acoustic branches and six optical branches spin wave in the block checkerboard antiferromagnetic phase, which has analytic expression in the high symmetry points. To compare the further neutron scattering experiments, we discuss the saddlepoint structure in the magnetic excitation spectrum and calculate the predicted inelastic neutron scattering pattern based on linear spin wave theory.
