Pólya's conjecture up to $ε$-loss and quantitative estimates for the remainder of Weyl's law

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ be a bounded Lipschitz domain. For any $ε\in (0,1)$ we show that for any Dirichlet eigenvalue $λ_k(Ω)>Λ(ε,Ω)$, it holds \begin{align*} k&\le (1+ε)\frac{|Ω|ω(n)}{(2π)^n}λ_k(Ω)^{n/2}, \end{align*} where $Λ(ε,Ω)$ is given explicitly. This reduces the $ε$-loss version of Pólya's conjecture to a computational problem. This estimate is based on quantitative estimates on the remainder of the Weyl law with explicit constants, which we give a new proof without using Neumann eigenvalues. Our arguments in deriving such uniform estimates yield also, in all dimensions $n\ge 2$, classes of domains that may even have rather irregular shapes or boundaries but satisfy Pólya's conjecture. Another key observation is that on strip-tiling domains (and therefore any triangles for instance) one actually has better eigenvalue estimates than Pólya conjectured.

Critical Sets of Elliptic Equations with Rapidly Oscillating Coefficients in Two Dimensions

In this paper we continue the study of critical sets of solutions $u_\e$ of second-order elliptic equations in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. In \cite{Lin-Shen-3d}, by controling the "turning" of approximate tangent planes, we show that the $(d-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the critical sets are bounded uniformly with respect to the period $\e$, provided that doubling indices for solutions are bounded. In this paper we use a different approach, based on the reduction of the doubling indices of $u_\e$, to study the two-dimensional case. The proof relies on the fact that the critical set of a homogeneous harmonic polynomial of degree two or higher in dimension two contains only one point.

Uniform Boundary Controllability and Homogenization of Wave Equations

We obtain sharp convergence rates, using Dirichlet correctors, for solutions of wave equations in a bounded domain with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. The results are used to prove the exact boundary controllability that is uniform in $ε$ - the scale of the microstructure, for the projection of solutions to the subspace generated by the eigenfunctions with eigenvalues less that $Cε^{-1/2}$.

Two dimensional liquid crystal droplet problem with tangential boundary condition

This paper studies a shape optimization problem which reduces to a nonlocal free boundary problem involving perimeter. It is motivated by a study of liquid crystal droplets with a tangential anchoring boundary condition and a volume constraint. We establish in 2D the existence of an optimal shape that has two cusps on the boundary. We also prove the boundary of the droplet is a chord-arc curve with its normal vector field in the VMO space. In fact, the boundary curves of such droplets belong to the so-called Weil-Petersson class. In addition, the asymptotic behavior of the optimal shape when the volume becomes extremely large or small is also studied.

On the Cauchy problem for two dimensional incompressible viscoelastic flows

We study the large-data Cauchy problem for two dimensional Oldroyd model of incompressible viscoelastic fluids. We prove the global-in-time existence of the Leray-Hopf type weak solutions in the physical energy space. Our method relies on a new $\textit{a priori}$ estimate on the space-time norm in $L^{\f32}_{loc}$ of the Cauchy-Green strain tensor $τ=\F\F^\top$, or equivalently the $L^3_{loc}$ norm of the Jacobian of the flow map $\F$. It allows us to rule out possible concentrations of the energy due to deformations associated with the flow maps. Following the general compactness arguments due to DiPerna and Lions (\cite{DL}, \cite{FNP}, \cite{PL}), and using the so-called \textit{effective viscous flux}, $\mathcal{G}$, which was introduced in our previous work \cite{HL}, we are able to control the possible oscillations of deformation gradients as well.

On the Two-Dimensional Muskat Problem with Monotone Large Initial Data

We consider the evolution of two incompressible, immiscible fluids with different densities in porous media, known as the Muskat problem [21], which in two dimensions is analogous to the Hele-Shaw cell [26]. We establish, for a class of large and monotone initial data, the global existence of weak solutions. The proof is based on a local well-posedness result for the initial data with certain specific asymptotics at spatial infinity and a new maximum principle for the first derivative of the graph function.

Finite time singularity of the nematic liquid crystal flow in dimension three

In this paper, we consider the initial and boundary value problem of a simplified nematic liquid crystal flow in dimension three and construct two examples of finite time singularity. The first example is constructed within the class of axisymmetric solutions, while the second example is constructed for any generic initial data $(u_0,d_0)$ that has sufficiently small energy, and $d_0$ has a nontrivial topology

Global Existence for Two Dimensional Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Flows with Zero Magnetic Diffusivity

The existence of global-in-time classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic flows with zero magnetic diffusivity is considered in two dimensions. The linearization of equations is a degenerated parabolic-hyperbolic system. The solution is constructed as a small perturbation of a constant background in critical spaces. The deformation gradient has been introduced to decouple the subtle coupling between the flow and the magnetic field. The $L^1$ dissipation of the velocity is obtained.

Global existence of weak solutions of the nematic liquid crystal flow in dimensions three

For any bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^3$, we establish the global existence of a weak solution $u:Ω\times (0,+\infty)\to\mathbb R^3\times\mathbb S^2$ of the initial-boundary value (or the Cauchy) problem of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system (1.1) modeling the hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals for any initial and boundary (or Cauchy) data $(u_0. d_0)\in {\bf H}\times H^1(Ω,\mathbb S^2$), with $d_0(Ω)\subset\mathbb S^2_+$ (the upper hemisphere). Furthermore, ($u,d$) satisfies the global energy inequality (1.4).

Global Small Solutions to a Complex Fluid Model in 3D

In this paper, we provide a much simplified proof of the main result in [Lin and Zhang, Comm. Pure Appl. Math.,67(2014), 531--580] concerning the global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for a 3D incompressible complex fluid model under the assumption that the initial data are close to some equilibrium states. Beside the classical energy method, the interpolating inequalities and the algebraic structure of the equations coming from the incompressibility of the fluid are crucial in our arguments. We combine the energy estimates with the $L^\infty$ estimates for time slices to deduce the key $L^1$ in time estimates. The latter is responsible for the global in time existence.

Nodal Sets of Steklov Eigenfunctions

We study the nodal set of the Steklov eigenfunctions on the boundary of a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ - the eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Under the assumption that the domain $Ω$ is $C^2$, we prove a doubling property for the eigenfunction $u$. We estimate the Hausdorff $\mathcal H^{n-2}$-measure of the nodal set of $u|_{\partial Ω}$ in terms of the eigenvalue $λ$ as $λ$ grows to infinity. In case that the domain $Ω$ is analytic, we prove a polynomial bound O($λ^6$). Our arguments, which make heavy use of Almgren's frequency functions, are built on the previous works [Garofalo and Lin, CPAM 40 (1987), no.3; Lin, CPAM 42(1989), no.6].

Recent developments of analysis for hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals

The study of hydrodynamics of liquid crystal leads to many fasci- nating mathematical problems, which has prompted various interesting works recently. This article reviews the static Oseen-Frank theory and surveys some recent progress on the existence, regularity, uniqueness, and large time asymp- totic of the hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals. We will also propose a few interesting questions for future investigations.

Global small solutions to 2-D incompressible MHD system

In this paper, we consider the global wellposedness of 2-D incompressible magneto-hydrodynamical system with small and smooth initial data. It is a coupled system between the Navier-Stokes equations and a free transport equation with an universal nonlinear coupling structure. The main difficulty of the proof lies in exploring the dissipative mechanism of the system due to the fact that there is a free transport equation in the system. To achieve this and to avoid the difficulty of propagating anisotropic regularity for the free transport equation, we first reformulate our system \eqref{1.1} in the Lagrangian coordinates \eqref{a14}. Then we employ anisotropic Littlewood-Paley analysis to establish the key {\it a priori} $L^1(\R^+; Lip(\R^2))$ estimate to the Lagrangian velocity field $Y_t$. With this estimate, we prove the global wellposedness of \eqref{a14} with smooth and small initial data by using the energy method. We emphasize that the algebraic structure of \eqref{a14} is crucial for the proofs to work. The global wellposedness of the original system \eqref{1.1} then follows by a suitable change of variables.

Global solutions of two dimensional incompressible viscoelastic flows with discontinuous initial data

The global existence of weak solutions of the incompressible viscoelastic flows in two spatial dimensions has been a long standing open problem, and it is studied in this paper. We show the global existence if the initial deformation gradient is close to the identity matrix in $L^2\cap L^\infty$, and the initial velocity is small in $L^2$ and bounded in $L^p$, for some $p>2$. While the assumption on the initial deformation gradient is automatically satisfied for the classical Oldroyd-B model, the additional assumption on the initial velocity being bounded in $L^p$ for some $p>2$ may due to techniques we employed. The smallness assumption on the $L^2$ norm of the initial velocity is, however, natural for the global well-posedness . One of the key observations in the paper is that the velocity and the \textquotedblleft effective viscous flux\textquotedblright $\mathcal{G}$ are sufficiently regular for positive time. The regularity of $\mathcal{G}$ leads to a new approach for the pointwise estimate for the deformation gradient without using $L^\infty$ bounds on the velocity gradients in spatial variables.

Regularity and existence of global solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\mathbb R^2$

In this paper, we first establish the regularity theorem for suitable weak solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in dimensions two. Building on such a regularity, we then establish the existence of a global weak solution to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\mathbb R^2$ for any initial data in the energy space, under the physical constraint conditions on the Leslie coefficients ensuring the dissipation of energy of the system, which is smooth away from at most finitely many times. This extends earlier works by Lin,Lin, and Wang on a simplified nematic liquid crystal flow in dimensions two.

Homogenization of Green and Neumann Functions

For a family of second-order elliptic operators with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we study the asymptotic behavior of the Green and Neumann functions, using Dirichlet and Neumann correctors. As a result we obtain asymptotic expansions of Poisson kernels and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps as well as near optimal convergence rates in $W^{1,p}$ for solutions with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions.

Convergence Rates in L^2 for Elliptic Homogenization Problems

We study rates of convergence of solutions in L^2 and H^{1/2} for a family of elliptic systems {L_ε} with rapidly oscillating oscillating coefficients in Lipschitz domains with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. As a consequence, we obtain convergence rates for Dirichlet, Neumann, and Steklov eigenvalues of {L_ε}. Most of our results, which rely on the recently established uniform estimates for the L^2 Dirichlet and Neumann problems in \cite{12,13}, are new even for smooth domains.

Homogenization of Elliptic Systems with Neumann Boundary Conditions

The main purpose of this work is to study uniform regularity estimates for a family of elliptic operators $\{\mathcal{L}_\varepsilon, \varepsilon>0\}$, arising in the theory of homogenization, with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish sharp $W^{1,p}$ estimates, Lipschitz estimates, and nontangential maximal function estimates, which are uniform in the parameter $\varepsilon$, on solutions with Neumann boundary conditions in $C^{1,α}$ domains.
