Partial regularity of the heat flow of half-harmonic maps and applications to harmonic maps with free boundary

We introduce a heat flow associated to half-harmonic maps, which have been introduced by Da Lio and Rivière. Those maps exhibit integrability by compensation in one space dimension and are related to harmonic maps with free boundary. We consider a new flow associated to these harmonic maps with free boundary which is actually motivated by a rather unusual heat flow for half-harmonic maps. We construct then weak solutions and prove their partial regularity in space and time via a Ginzburg-Landau approximation. The present paper complements the study initiated by Struwe and Chen-Lin.

The Aronsson Equation for Absolute Minimizers of Supremal Functionals in Carnot-Carathéodory Spaces

Given a $C^2$ family of vector fields $X_1,...,X_m$ which induces a continuous Carnot-Carathéodory distance, we show that any absolute minimizer of a supremal functional defined by a $C^2$ quasiconvex Hamiltonian $f(x, z, p)$, allowing $z$-variable dependence, is a viscosity solution to the Aronsson equation $-\langle X(f(x, u(x), Xu(x))), D_p f(x, u(x), Xu(x))\rangle = 0.$

On static and hydrodynamic biaxial nematic liquid crystals

In the first part of this paper, we will consider minimizing configurations of the Oseen-Frank energy functional $E(n, m)$ for a biaxial nematics $(n, m):Ω\to \mathbb S^2\times \mathbb S^2$ with $n\cdot m=0$ in dimension three, and establish that it is smooth off a closed set of $1$-dimension Hausdorff measure zero. In the second part, we will consider a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system for biaxial nematics $(n, m)$ in a two dimensional domain and establish the existence of a unique global weak solution $(u, n, m)$ that is smooth off at most finitely many singular times for any initial and boundary data of finite energy. They extend to biaxial nematics of earlier results corresponding to minimizing uniaxial nematics by Hardt-Kindelerherer-Lin \cite{HKL} and a simplified hydrodynamics of uniaxial liquid crystal by Lin-Lin-Wang \cite{LLW10} respectively.

Weak compactness of simplified nematic liquid flows in 2D

For any bounded, smooth domain $Ω\subset \R^2$, %(or $Ω=\R^2$), we will establish the weak compactness property of solutions to the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system for both uniaxial and biaxial nematics, and the convergence of weak solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau type nematic liquid crystal flow to a weak solution of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system as the parameter tends to zero. This is based on the compensated compactness property of the Ericksen stress tensors, which is obtained by the $L^p$-estimate of the Hopf differential for the Ericksen-Leslie system and the Pohozaev type argument for the Ginzburg-Landau type nematic liquid crystal flow.

Weak solutions of non-isothermal nematic liquid crystal flow in dimension three

For any smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$, we establish the existence of a global weak solution $(\mathbf{u},\mathbf{d}, θ)$ to the simplified, non-isothermal Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the hydrodynamic motion of nematic liquid crystals with variable temperature for any initial and boundary data $(\mathbf{u}_0, \mathbf{d}_0, θ_0)\in\mathbf{H}\times H^1(Ω, \mathbb{S}^2)\times L^1(Ω)$, with $ \mathbf{d}_0(Ω)\subset\mathbb{S}_+^2$ (the upper half sphere) and $\displaystyle\inf_Ωθ_0>0$.

Regularity of weak solution of variational problems modeling the Cosserat micropolar elasticity

In this paper, we consider weak solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equation to a variational energy functional modeling the geometrically nonlinear Cosserat micropolar elasticity of continua in dimension three, which is a system coupling between the Poisson equation and the equation of $p$-harmonic maps ($2\le p\le 3$). We show that if a weak solutions is stationary, then its singular set is discrete for $2<p<3$ and has zero $1$-dimensional Hausdorff measure for $p=2$. If, in addition, it is a stable-stationary weak solution, then it is regular everywhere when $p\in [2, \frac{32}{15}]$.

Suitable weak solutions for the co-rotational Beris-Edwards system in dimension three

In this paper, we establish the global existence of a suitable weak solution to the co-rotational Beris-Edwards $Q$-tensor system modeling the hydrodynamic motion of nematic liquid crystals with either Landau-De Gennes bulk potential in $\mathbb R^3$ or Ball-Majumdar bulk potential in $\mathbb{T}^3$, a system coupling the forced incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with a dissipative, parabolic system of Q-tensor $Q$ in $\mathbb R^3$, which is shown to be smooth away from a closed set $Σ$ whose $1$-dimensional parabolic Hausdorff measure is zero.

Heat flow of extrinsic biharmonic maps from a four dimensional manifold with boundary

Let $(M,g)$ be a four dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and $(N,h)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. We show the existence of a unique, global weak solution of the heat flow of extrinsic biharmonic maps from $M$ to $N$ under the Dirichlet boundary condition, which is regular with the exception of at most finitely many time slices. We also discuss the behavior of solution near the singular times. As an immediate application, we prove the existence of a smooth extrinsic biharmonic map from $M$ to $N$ under any Dirichlet boundary condition.

Heat flow of Yang-Mills-Higgs functionals in dimension two

We consider the heat flow of Yang-Mills-Higgs functional where the base manifold is a Riemannian surface and the fiber is a compact symplectic manifold. We show that the corresponding Cauchy problem admits a global weak solution for any $H^1$-initial data. Moreover, the solution is smooth except finitely many singularities. We prove an energy identity at finite time singularities and give a description of the asymptotic behavior at time infinity.

Remarks on approximate harmonic maps in dimension two

For the class of approximate harmonic maps $u\in W^{1,2}(Σ,N)$ from a closed Riemmanian surface $(Σ,g)$ to a compact Riemannian manifold $(N, h)$, we show that (i) the so-called energy identity holds for weakly convergent approximate harmonic maps $\{u_n\}:Σ\to N$, with tension fields $τ(u_n)$ bounded in the Morrey space $M^{1,δ}(Σ)$ for some $0\leδ<2$; and (ii) if an approximate harmonic map $u$ has tension field $τ(u)\in L\log L(Σ)\cap M^{1,δ}(Σ)$ for some $0\leδ<2$, then $u\in W^{2,1}(Σ, N)$. Based on these estimates, we further establish the bubble tree convergence, referring to energy identity both $L^{2,1}$ of gradients and $L^1$-norm of hessians and the oscillation convergence, for a weakly convergent sequence of approximate harmonic maps $\{u_n\}$, with tension fields $τ(u_n)$ uniformly bounded in $M^{1,δ}(Σ)$ for some $0\leδ<2$ and uniformly integrable in $L\log L(Σ)$.

Finite time singularity of the nematic liquid crystal flow in dimension three

In this paper, we consider the initial and boundary value problem of a simplified nematic liquid crystal flow in dimension three and construct two examples of finite time singularity. The first example is constructed within the class of axisymmetric solutions, while the second example is constructed for any generic initial data $(u_0,d_0)$ that has sufficiently small energy, and $d_0$ has a nontrivial topology

Uniqueness of absolute minimizers for $L^\fz$-functionals involving Hamiltonians $H(x,p)$

For a bounded domain $U\subset\rn$, consider the $L^\fz$-functional involving a nonnegative Hamilton function $H:\overline U\times\rn\to [0,\fz)$. In this paper, we will establish the uniqueness of absolute minimizers $u\in W^{1,\fz}_\loc(U)\cap C(\overline U)$ for $H$, under the Dirichlet boundary value $g\in C(\partial U)$, provided \noindent (A1) $H$ is lower semicontinuous in $\overline U\times\rn$, and $H(x,\cdot)$ is convex for any $x\in\overline U$. \noindent (A2) $\displaystyle H(x,0)=\min_{p\in \rn}H(x,p)=0$ for any $ x\in \overline U$, and $\displaystyle\bigcup_{x\in \overline U}\big\{p: H(x,p)=0\big\}$ is contained in a hyperplane of $\rn$. \noindent (A3) For any $\lz>0$, there exist $\displaystyle 0<r_\lz\le R_\lz<\fz$, with $\displaystyle\lim_{\lz\to\fz}r_\lz=\fz$,such that $$B(0,r_\lz)\subset \Big\{p\in\rn\ |\ H(x,p)< \lz\Big\}\subset B(0,R_\lz)\ \forall\ \lz> 0\ \mbox{and}\ x\in \overline U.$$ This generalizes the uniqueness theorem by \cite{j93, jwy, acjs} and \cite{ksz} to a large class of Hamiltonian functions $H(x,p)$ with $x$-dependence. As a corollary, we confirm an open question on the uniqueness of absolute minimizers posed by {\cite{jwy}}. The proofs rely on geometric structure of the action function $\mathcal L_t(x,y)$ induced by $H$, and the identification of the absolute subminimality of $u$ with convexity of the Hamilton-Jacobi flow $t\mapsto T^tu(x)$

Everywhere differentiability of viscosity solutions to a class of Aronsson's equations

For any open set $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$ and $n\ge 2$, we establish everywhere differentiability of viscosity solutions to the Aronsson equation $$ <D_x(H(x, Du)), D_p H(x, Du)>=0 \quad \rm in\ \ Ω, $$ where $H$ is given by $$H(x,\,p)=<A(x)p,p>=\sum_{i,\,j=1}^na^{ij}(x)p_i p_j,\ x\inΩ, \ p\in\mathbb R^n, $$ and $A=(a^{ij}(x))\in C^{1,1}(\barΩ,\mathbb R^{n\times n})$ is uniformly elliptic. This extends an earlier theorem by Evans and Smart \cite{es11a} on infinity harmonic functions.

Global existence of weak solutions of the nematic liquid crystal flow in dimensions three

For any bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^3$, we establish the global existence of a weak solution $u:Ω\times (0,+\infty)\to\mathbb R^3\times\mathbb S^2$ of the initial-boundary value (or the Cauchy) problem of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system (1.1) modeling the hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals for any initial and boundary (or Cauchy) data $(u_0. d_0)\in {\bf H}\times H^1(Ω,\mathbb S^2$), with $d_0(Ω)\subset\mathbb S^2_+$ (the upper hemisphere). Furthermore, ($u,d$) satisfies the global energy inequality (1.4).

Recent developments of analysis for hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals

The study of hydrodynamics of liquid crystal leads to many fasci- nating mathematical problems, which has prompted various interesting works recently. This article reviews the static Oseen-Frank theory and surveys some recent progress on the existence, regularity, uniqueness, and large time asymp- totic of the hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals. We will also propose a few interesting questions for future investigations.

Global Well-Posedness of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for initial data in Morrey space

We establish the global well-posedness of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in $\mathbb R^n$ for any initial data ${\bf m}_0\in H^1_*(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb S^2)$ whose gradient belongs to the Morrey space $M^{2,2}(\mathbb R^n)$ with small norm $\displaystyle\|\nabla {\bf m}_0\|_{M^{2,2}(\mathbb R^n)}$. The method is based on priori estimates of a dissipative Schrödinger equation of Ginzburg-Landau types obtained from the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation by the moving frame technique.

On the rigidity of nematic liquid crystal flow on $S^2$

In this paper we establish the uniformity property of a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system modelling the hydrodynamics of nematic liquid crystals on the two dimensional unit sphere $S^2$, namely the uniform convergence in $L^2$ to a steady state exponentially as t tends to infinity. The main assumption, similar to Topping [15], concerns the equation of liquid crystal director $d$ and states that at infinity time, a weak limit $d_\infty$ and any bubble $ω_i$($1\le i\le l$) share a common orientation. As consequences, the uniformity property holds under various types of small initial data.

Regularity and existence of global solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\mathbb R^2$

In this paper, we first establish the regularity theorem for suitable weak solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in dimensions two. Building on such a regularity, we then establish the existence of a global weak solution to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\mathbb R^2$ for any initial data in the energy space, under the physical constraint conditions on the Leslie coefficients ensuring the dissipation of energy of the system, which is smooth away from at most finitely many times. This extends earlier works by Lin,Lin, and Wang on a simplified nematic liquid crystal flow in dimensions two.

On uniqueness of heat flow of harmonic maps

In this paper, we establish the uniqueness of heat flow of harmonic maps into (N, h) that have sufficiently small renormalized energies, provided that N is either a unit sphere $S^{k-1}$ or a compact Riemannian homogeneous manifold without boundary. For such a class of solutions, we also establish the convexity property of the Dirichlet energy for $t\ge t_0>0$ and the unique limit property at time infinity. As a corollary, the uniqueness is shown for heat flow of harmonic maps into any compact Riemannian manifold N without boundary whose gradients belong to $L^q_t L^l_x$ for $q>2$ and $l>n$ satisfying the Serrin's condition.

Well-Posedness of Nematic Liquid Crystal Flow in $L^3_{\hbox{uloc}}(\R^3)$

In this paper, we establish the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the simplified version of hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals (\ref{LLF}) in $\mathbb R^3$ for any initial data $(u_0,d_0)$ having small $L^3_{\hbox{uloc}}$-norm of $(u_0,\nabla d_0)$. Here $L^3_{\hbox{uloc}}(\mathbb R^3)$ is the space of uniformly locally $L^3$-integrable functions. For any initial data $(u_0, d_0)$ with small $\displaystyle |(u_0,\nabla d_0)|_{L^3(\mathbb R^3)}$, we show that there exists a unique, global solution to (\ref{LLF}) which is smooth for $t>0$ and has monotone deceasing $L^3$-energy for $t\ge 0$.

Blow up criterion for compressible nematic liquid crystal flows in dimension three

In this paper, we consider the short time strong solution to a simplified hydrodynamic flow modeling the compressible, nematic liquid crystal materials in dimension three. We establish a criterion for possible breakdown of such solutions at finite time in terms of the temporal integral of both the maximum norm of the deformation tensor of velocity gradient and the square of maximum norm of gradient of liquid crystal director field.

Blow up criterion for nematic liquid crystal flows

In this paper, we establish a blow up criterion for the short time classical solution of the nematic liquid crystal ow, a simplified version of Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the hydrodynamic evolution of nematic liquid crystals, in dimensions two and three. More precisely, $0<T_*<+\infty$ is the maximal time interval iff (i) for $n=3$, $|ω|+|\nabla d|^2\notin L^1_tL^\infty_x(\mathbb R^3\times [0,T_*])$, and (ii) for $n=2$, $|\nabla|^2\notin L^1_tL^\infty_x(\mathbb R^2\times [0,T_*])$.

Boundary regularity of stationary biharmonic maps

We consider the Dirichlet problem for stationary biharmonic maps $u$ from a bounded, smooth domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$ ($n\ge 5$) to a compact, smooth Riemannian manifold $N\subset\mathbb R^l$ without boundary. For any smooth boundary data, we show that if, in addition, $u$ satisfies a certain boundary monotonicity inequality, then there exists a closed subset $Σ\subset\barΩ$, with $H^{n-4}(Σ)=0$, such that $u\in C^\infty(\barΩ\setminusΣ, N)$.

Energy identity of approximate biharmonic maps to Riemannian manifolds and its application

We consider in dimension four weakly convergent sequences of approximate biharmonic maps to a Riemannian manifold with bi-tension fields bounded in $L^p$ for $p>\frac43$. We prove an energy identity that accounts for the loss of hessian energies by the sum of hessian energies over finitely many nontrivial biharmonic maps on $\mathbb R^4$. As a corollary, we obtain an energy identity for the heat flow of biharmonic maps at time infinity.

Harmonic maps on domains with piecewise Lipschitz continuous metrics

For a bounded domain equipped with a piecewise Lipschitz continuous Riemannian metric g, we consider harmonic map from $(Ω, g)$ to a compact Riemannian manifold $(N,h)\subset\mathbb R^k$ without boundary. We generalize the notion of stationary harmonic map and prove the partial regularity. We also discuss the global Lipschitz and piecewise $C^{1,α}$-regularity of harmonic maps from $(Ω, g)$ manifolds that support convex distance functions.

Strong solutions of the compressible nematic liquid crystal flow

We study strong solutions of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system modeling compressible nematic liquid crystal flows in a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^3$. We first prove the local existence of unique strong solutions provided that the initial data $ρ_0, u_0, d_0$are sufficiently regular and satisfy a natural compatibility condition. The initial density function $ρ_0$ may vanish on an open subset (i.e., an initial vacuum may exist). We then prove a criterion for possible breakdown of such a local strong solution at finite time in terms of blow up of the quantities $\|ρ\|_{L^\infty_tL^\infty_x}$ and $\|\nabla d\|_{L^3_tL^\infty_x}$.

Regularity of Dirac-harmonic maps

For any $n$-dimensional compact spin Riemannian manifold $M$ with a given spin structure and a spinor bundle $ΣM$, and any compact Riemannian manifold $N$, we show an $ε$-regularity theorem for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps . As a consequence, any weakly Dirac-harmonic map is proven to be smooth when n = 2. A weak convergence theorem for approximate Dirac-harmonic maps is established when $n = 2$. For $n \ge 3$, we introduce the notation of stationary Dirac-harmonic maps and obtain a Liouville theorem for stationary Dirac-harmonic maps in $R^n$. If, additions, $ψ\in W^{1,p}$ for some $p>2n/3$, then we obtain an energy monotonicity formula and prove a partial regularity theorem for any such a stationary Dirac-harmonic map.

A compactness theorem of $n$-harmonic maps

For $n\ge 3$, let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $R^n$ and $N$ be a compact Riemannian manifold in $R^L$ without boundary. Suppose that $u_n\in W^{1,n}(Ω,N)$ are the Palais-Smale sequences of the Dirichlet $n$-energy functional and $u_n$ converges weakly in $W^{1,n}$ to a map $u\in W^{1,n}(Ω,N)$. Then $u$ is a $n$-harmonic map. In particular, the space of $n$-harmonic maps is sequentially compact for the weak $W^{1,n}$-topology.

Regularity and relaxed problems of minimizing biharmonic maps into spheres

For $n\ge 5$ and $k\ge 4$, we show that any minimizing biharmonic map from $Ω\subset R^n$ to $S^k$ is smooth off a closed set whose Hausdorff dimension is at most $n-5$. When $n=5$ and $k=4$, for a parameter $λ\in [0,1]$ we introduce a $λ$-relaxed energy $\H_λ$ for the Hessian energy for maps in $W^{2,2}(Ω,S^4)$ so that each minimizer $u_λ$ of $\H_λ$ is also a biharmonic map. We also estabilish the existence and partial regularity of a minimizer of $\H_λ$ for $λ\in [0,1)$.
