Critical Sets of Elliptic Equations with Rapidly Oscillating Coefficients in Two Dimensions

In this paper we continue the study of critical sets of solutions $u_\e$ of second-order elliptic equations in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. In \cite{Lin-Shen-3d}, by controling the "turning" of approximate tangent planes, we show that the $(d-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the critical sets are bounded uniformly with respect to the period $\e$, provided that doubling indices for solutions are bounded. In this paper we use a different approach, based on the reduction of the doubling indices of $u_\e$, to study the two-dimensional case. The proof relies on the fact that the critical set of a homogeneous harmonic polynomial of degree two or higher in dimension two contains only one point.

Sharp Convergence Rates for Darcy's Law

This paper is concerned with Darcy's law for an incompressible viscous fluid flowing in a porous medium. We establish the sharp $O(\sqrt{\e})$ convergence rate in a periodically perforated and bounded domain in $R^d$ for $d\ge 2$, where $\e$ represents the size of solid obstacles. This is achieved by constructing two boundary correctors to control the boundary layers created by the incompressibility condition and the discrepancy of boundary values between the solution and the leading term in its asymptotic expansion. One of the correctors deals with the tangential boundary data, while the other handles the normal boundary data.

Uniform $W^{1, p}$ Estimates and Large-Scale Regularity for Dirichlet Problems in Perforated Domains

In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem for Laplace's equation in a domain $ω_{ε, η}$ perforated periodically with small holes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $ε$ represents the scale of the minimal distances between holes and $η$ the ratio between the scale of sizes of holes and $ε$. We establish $W^{1, p}$ estimates for solutions with bounding constants depending explicitly on $ε$ and $η$. The proof relies on a large-scale Lipschitz estimate for harmonic functions in perforated domains. The results are optimal for $d\ge 2$.

Uniform Boundary Controllability and Homogenization of Wave Equations

We obtain sharp convergence rates, using Dirichlet correctors, for solutions of wave equations in a bounded domain with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. The results are used to prove the exact boundary controllability that is uniform in $ε$ - the scale of the microstructure, for the projection of solutions to the subspace generated by the eigenfunctions with eigenvalues less that $Cε^{-1/2}$.

Uniform Estimates for Dirichlet Problems in Perforated Domains

This paper studies the Dirichlet problem for Laplace's equation in a domain $Ω_{\varepsilon, η}$ perforated with small holes, where $\varepsilon$ represents the scale of the minimal distances between holes and $η$ the ratio between the scale of sizes of holes and $\varepsilon$. We establish $W^{1, p}$ estimates for solutions with bounding constants depending explicitly on the small parameters $\varepsilon$ and $η$. We also show that these estimates are either optimal or near optimal.

Quasi-stationary distributions of multi-dimensional diffusion processes

The present paper is devoted to the investigation of the long term behavior of a class of singular multi-dimensional diffusion processes that get absorbed in finite time with probability one. Our focus is on the analysis of quasi-stationary distributions (QSDs), which describe the long term behavior of the system conditioned on not being absorbed. Under natural Lyapunov conditions, we construct a QSD and prove the sharp exponential convergence to this QSD for compactly supported initial distributions. Under stronger Lyapunov conditions ensuring that the diffusion process comes down from infinity, we show the uniqueness of a QSD and the exponential convergence to the QSD for all initial distributions. Our results can be seen as the multi-dimensional generalization of Cattiaux et al (Ann. Prob. 2009) as well as the complement to Hening and Nguyen (Ann. Appl. Prob. 2018) which looks at the long term behavior of multi-dimensional diffusions that can only become extinct asymptotically. The centerpiece of our approach concerns a uniformly elliptic operator that we relate to the generator, or the Fokker-Planck operator, associated to the diffusion process. This operator only has singular coefficients in its zeroth-order terms and can be handled more easily than the generator. For this operator, we establish the discreteness of its spectrum, its principal spectral theory, the stochastic representation of the semigroup generated by it, and the global regularity for the associated parabolic equation. We show how our results can be applied to most ecological models, among which cooperative, competitive, and predator-prey Lotka-Volterra systems.

Combined Effects of Homogenization and Singular Perturbations: Quantitative Estimates

We investigate quantitative estimates in periodic homogenization of second-order elliptic systems of elasticity with singular fourth-order perturbations. The convergence rates, which depend on the scale $κ$ that represents the strength of the singular perturbation and on the length scale $ε$ of the heterogeneities, are established. We also obtain the large-scale Lipschitz estimate, down to the scale $ε$ and independent of $κ$. This large-scale estimate, when combined with small-scale estimates, yields the classical Lipschitz estimate that is uniform in both $ε$ and $κ$.

Large-Scale Lipschitz Estimates for Elliptic Systems with Periodic High-Contrast Coefficients

This paper is concerned with the large-scale regularity in the homogenization of elliptic systems of elasticity with periodic high-contrast coefficients. We obtain the large-scale Lipschitz estimate that is uniform with respect to the contrast ratio $δ^2$ for $0<δ<\infty$. Our study also covers the case of soft inclusions ($δ=0$) as well as the case of stiff inclusions ($δ=\infty$). The large-scale Lipschitz estimate, together with classical local estimates, allows us to establish explicit bounds for the matrix of fundamental solutions and its derivatives.

Weighted $L^2$ Estimates for Elliptic Homogenization in Lipschitz Domains

We develop a new real-variable method for weighted $L^p$ estimates. The method is applied to the study of weighted $W^{1, 2}$ estimates in Lipschitz domains for weak solutions of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. It produces a necessary and sufficient condition, which depends on the weight function, for the weighted $W^{1,2}$ estimate to hold in a fixed Lipschitz domain with a given weight. Using this condition, for elliptic systems in Lipschitz domains with rapidly oscillating, periodic and VMO coefficients, we reduce the problem of weighted estimates to the case of constant coefficients.

Homogenization of Parabolic Equations with Non-self-similar Scales

This paper is concerned with quantitative homogenization of second-order parabolic systems with periodic coefficients varying rapidly in space and time, in different scales. We obtain large-scale interior and boundary Lipschitz estimates as well as interior $C^{1, α}$ and $C^{2, α}$ estimates by utilizing higher-order correctors. We also investigate the problem of convergence rates for initial-boundary value problems.

Approximate Correctors and Convergence Rates in Almost-Periodic Homogenization

We carry out a comprehensive study of quantitative homogenization of second-order elliptic systems with bounded measurable coefficients that are almost-periodic in the sense of H. Weyl. We obtain uniform local $L^2$ estimates for the approximate correctors in terms of a function that quantifies the almost-periodicity of the coefficient matrix. We give a condition that implies the existence of (true) correctors. These estimates as well as similar estimates for the dual approximate correctors yield optimal or near optimal convergence rates in $H^1$ and $L^2$.The $L^2$-based Hölder and Lipschitz estimates at large scale are also established.

Boundary Layers in Periodic Homogenization of Neumann Problems

This paper is concerned with a family of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We initiate the study of homogenization and boundary layers for Neumann problems with first-order oscillating boundary data. We identify the homogenized system and establish the sharp rate of convergence in $L^2$ in dimension three or higher. Sharp regularity estimates are also obtained for the homogenized boundary data in both Dirichlet and Neumann problems. The results are used to obtain a higher-order convergence rate for Neumann problems with non-oscillating data.

Boundary Estimates in Elliptic Homogenization

For a family of systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we establish sharp boundary estimates with either Dirichlet or Neumann conditions, uniform down to the microscopic scale, without smoothness assumptions on the coefficients. Under additional smoothness conditions, these estimates, combined with the corresponding local estimates, lead to the full Rellich type estimates in Lipschitz domains and Lipschitz estimates in $C^{1, α}$ domains. The $C^α$, $W^{1,p}$, and $L^p$ estimates in $C^1$ domains for systems with VMO coefficients are also studied. The approach is based on certain estimates on convergence rates. As a bi-product, we obtain sharp $O(\varepsilon)$ error estimates in $L^q(Ω)$ for $q=\frac{2d}{d-1}$ and a Lipschitz domain $Ω$, with no smoothness assumption on the coefficients.

Convergence Rates and Hölder Estimates in Almost-Periodic Homogenization of Elliptic Systems

For a family of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating almost-periodic coefficients, we obtain estimates for approximate correctors in terms of a function that quantifies the almost periodicity of the coefficients. The results are used to investigate the problem of convergence rates. We also establish uniform Hölder estimates for the Dirichlet problem in a bounded $C^{1, α}$ domain.

Homogenization of Stokes Systems and Uniform Regularity Estimates

This paper is concerned with uniform regularity estimates for a family of Stokes systems with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish interior Lipschitz estimates for the velocity and $L^\infty$ estimates for the pressure as well as a Liouville property for solutions in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also obtain the boundary $W^{1,p}$ estimates in a bounded $C^1$ domain for any $1<p<\infty$.

Regularity and stability of transition fronts in nonlocal equations with time heterogeneous ignition nonlinearity

The present paper is devoted to the investigation of various properties of transition fronts in nonlocal equations in heterogeneous media of ignition type, whose existence has been established by the authors of the present paper in a previous work. It is first shown that the transition front is continuously differentiable in space with uniformly bounded and uniformly Lipschitz continuous space partial derivative. This is the first time that regularity of transition fronts in nonlocal equations is ever studied. It is then shown that the transition front is uniformly steep. Finally, asymptotic stability, in the sense of exponentially attracting front like initial data, of the transition front is studied.

Regularity of transition fronts in nonlocal dispersal evolution equations

It is known that solutions of nonlocal dispersal evolution equations do not become smoother in space as time elapses. This lack of space regularity would cause a lot of difficulties in studying transition fronts in nonlocal equations. In the present paper, we establish some general criteria concerning space regularity of transition fronts in nonlocal dispersal evolution equations with a large class of nonlinearities, which allows the applicability of various techniques for reaction-diffusion equations to nonlocal equation, and hence serves as an initial and fundamental step for further studying various qualitative properties of transition fronts such as stability and uniqueness. We also prove the existence of continuously differentiable and increasing interface location functions, which give a better characterization of the propagation of transition fronts and are of great technical importance.

Stability, Uniqueness and Recurrence of Generalized Traveling Waves in Time Heterogeneous Media of Ignition Type

The present paper is devoted to the study of stability, uniqueness and recurrence of generalized traveling waves of reaction-diffusion equations in time heterogeneous media of ignition type, whose existence has been proven by the authors of the present paper in a previous work. It is first shown that generalized traveling waves exponentially attract wave-like initial data. Next, properties of generalized traveling waves, such as space monotonicity and exponential decay ahead of interface, are obtained. Uniqueness up to space translations of generalized traveling waves is then proven. Finally, it is shown that the wave profile of the unique generalized traveling wave is of the same recurrence as the media. In particular, if the media is time almost periodic, then so is the wave profile of the unique generalized traveling wave.

Transition fronts in nonlocal equations with time heterogeneous ignition nonlinearity

The present paper is devoted to the study of transition fronts in nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations with time heterogeneous nonlinearity of ignition type. It is proven that such an equation admits space monotone transition fronts with finite speed and space regularity in the sense of uniform Lipschitz continuity. Our approach is first constructing a sequence of approximating front-like solutions and then proving that the approximating solutions converge to a transition front. We take advantage of the idea of modified interface location, which allows us to characterize the finite speed of approximating solutions in the absence of space regularity, and leads directly to uniform exponential decaying estimates.

Transition fronts in nonlocal Fisher-KPP equations in time heterogeneous media

The present paper is devoted to the study of transition fronts of nonlocal Fisher-KPP equations in time heterogeneous media. We first construct transition fronts with prescribed interface location functions, which are natural generalizations of front location functions in homogeneous media. It it shown that these transition fronts have exact decaying rates as the space variable tends to infinity. Then, by the general results on space regularity of transition fronts of nonlocal evolution equations proven in the authors' earlier work (\cite{ShSh14-4}), these transition fronts are continuously differentiable in space. We show that their space partial derivatives have exact decaying rates as the space variable tends to infinity. Finally, we study the asymptotic stability of transition fronts. It is shown that transition fronts attract those solutions whose initial data decays as fast as transition fronts near infinity and essentially above zero near negative infinity.

Transition Fronts in Time Heterogeneous and Random Media of Ignition Type

The current paper is devoted to the investigation of wave propagation phenomenon in reaction-diffusion equations with ignition type nonlinearity in time heterogeneous and random media. It is proven that such equations in time heterogeneous media admit transition fronts or generalized traveling wave solutions with time dependent profiles and that such equations in time random media admit generalized traveling wave solutions with random profiles. Important properties of generalized traveling wave solutions, including the boundedness of propagation speeds and the uniform decaying estimates of the propagation fronts, are also obtained.

Completeness for sparse potential scattering

The current paper is devoted to the scattering theory of a class of continuum Schrödinger operators with deterministic sparse potentials. We first establish the limiting absorption principle for both modified free resolvents and modified perturbed resolvents. This actually is a weak form of the classical limiting absorption principle. We then prove the existence and completeness of local wave operators, which, in particular, imply the existence of wave operators. Under additional assumptions on the sparse potential, we prove the completeness of wave operators. In the context of continuum Schrödinger operators with sparse potentials, this paper gives the first proof of the completeness of wave operators.

Lipschitz estimates in almost-periodic homogenization

We establish uniform Lipschitz estimates for second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating, almost-periodic coefficients. We give interior estimates as well as estimates up to the boundary in bounded $C^{1,α}$ domains with either Dirichlet or Neumann data. The main results extend those in the periodic setting due to Avellaneda and Lin for interior and Dirichlet boundary estimates and later Kenig, Lin, and Shen for the Neumann boundary conditions. In contrast to these papers, our arguments are constructive (and thus the constants are in principle computable) and the results for the Neumann conditions are new even in the periodic setting, since we can treat non-symmetric coefficients. We also obtain uniform $W^{1,p}$ estimates.

One-dimensional random attractor and rotation number of the stochastic damped sine-Gordon equation

This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic dynamics of the stochastic damped sine-Gordon equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. It is shown that for any positive damping and diffusion coefficients, the equation possesses a random attractor, and when the damping and diffusion coefficients are sufficiently large, the random attractor is a one-dimensional random horizontal curve regardless of the strength of noise. Hence its dynamics is not chaotic. It is also shown that the equation has a rotation number provided that the damping and diffusion coefficients are sufficiently large, which implies that the solutions tend to oscillate with the same frequency eventually and the so called frequency locking is successful.

Scattering Theory of Schrödinger Operators with Random Sparse Potentials

In this paper, we study the scattering theory of a class of continuum Schrödinger operators with random sparse potentials. The existence and completeness of wave operators are proven by establishing the uniform boundedness of modified free resolvents and modified perturbed resolvents, and by invoking a previous result on the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum below zero.

Synchronization of coupled stochastic systems with multiplicative noise

We consider the synchronization of solutions to coupled systems of the conjugate random ordinary differential equations (RODEs) for the $N$-Stratronovich stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs) with linear multiplicative noise ($N\in \mathbb{N}$). We consider the synchronization between two solutions and among different components of solutions under one-sided dissipative Lipschitz conditions. We first show that the random dynamical system generated by the solution of the coupled RODEs has a singleton sets random attractor which implies the synchronization of any two solutions. Moreover, the singleton sets random attractor determines a stationary stochastic solution of the equivalently coupled SODEs. Then we show that any solution of the RODEs converge to a solution of the averaged RODE within any finite time interval as the coupled coefficient tends to infinity. Our results generalize the work of two Stratronovich SODEs in \cite{9}.

An Improved Combes-Thomas Estimate of Magnetic Schrödinger Operators

In the present paper, we prove an improved Combes-Thomas estimate, i.e., the Combes-Thomas estimate in trace-class norms, for magnetic Schrödinger operators under general assumptions. In particular, we allow unbounded potentials. We also show that for any function in the Schwartz space on the reals the operator kernel decays, in trace-class norms, faster than any polynomial.

Lifshitz Tails for Anderson Models with Sign-Indefinite Single-Site Potentials

We study the spectral minimum and Lifshitz tails for continuum random Schrödinger operators of the form \begin{equation*} H_{\om}=-\De+V_{0}+\sum_{i\in\Z^{d}}\om_{i}u(\cdot-i), \end{equation*} where $V_{0}$ is the periodic potential, $\{\om_{i}\}_{i\in\Z^{d}}$ are i.i.d random variables and $u$ is the sign-indefinite impurity potential. Recently, this model has been proven to exhibit Lifshitz tails near the bottom of the spectrum under the small support assuption of $u$ and the reflection symmetry assumption of $V_{0}$ and $u$. We here drop the reflection symmetry assumption of $V_{0}$ and $u$. We first give characterizations of the bottom of the spectrum. Then, we show the existence of Lifshitz tails in the regime where the characterization of the bottom of the spectrum is explicit. In particular, this regime covers the reflection symmetry case.

We obtain uniform interior $W^{1,p}$, Hölder, and Lipschitz estimates as well as boundary $W^{1,p}$ and Hölder estimates, using compactness methods. As a consequence, we establish uniform $W^{1,p}$ estimates for the initial-Dirichlet problems in $C^{1}$ cylinders.

Asymptotic Dynamics of a Class of Coupled Oscillators Driven by White Noises

This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic dynamics of a class of coupled second order oscillators driven by white noises. It is shown that any system of such coupled oscillators with positive damping and coupling coefficients possesses a global random attractor. Moreover, when the damping and the coupling coefficients are sufficiently large, the global random attractor is a one-dimensional random horizontal curve regardless of the strength of the noises, and the system has a rotation number, which implies that the oscillators in the system tend to oscillate with the same frequency eventually and therefore the so called frequency locking is successful. The results obtained in this paper generalize many existing results on the asymptotic dynamics for a single second order noisy oscillator to systems of coupled second order noisy oscillators. They show that coupled damped second order oscillators with large damping have similar asymptotic dynamics as the limiting coupled first order oscillators as the damping goes to infinite and also that coupled damped second order oscillators have similar asymptotic dynamics as their proper space continuous counterparts, which are of great practical importance.

Existence, Uniqueness and Anisotropic-Decay-Caused Lifshitz Tails of the Integrated Density of Surface States for Random Surface Models

The current paper is devoted to the study of existence, uniqueness and Lifshitz tails of the integrated density of surface states (IDSS) for Schrödinger operators with alloy type random surface potentials. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the IDSS for negative energies, which is defined as the thermodynamic limit of the normalized eigenvalue counting functions of localized operators on strips with sections being special cuboids. Under the additional assumption that the single-site impurity potential decays anisotropically, we also prove that the IDSS for negative energies exhibits Lifshitz tails near the bottom of the almost sure spectrum in the following three regimes: the quantum regime, the quantum-classical/classical-quantum regime and the classical regime. We point out that the quantum-classical/classical-quantum regime is new for random surface models.

Homogenization of Green and Neumann Functions

For a family of second-order elliptic operators with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we study the asymptotic behavior of the Green and Neumann functions, using Dirichlet and Neumann correctors. Resolvent Estimates in L^p for the Stokes Operator in Lipschitz Domains

We establish the $L^p$ resolvent estimates for the Stokes operator in Lipschitz domains in $R^d$, $d\ge 3$ for $|\frac{1}{p}-1/2|< \frac{1}{2d} +ε$. The result, in particular, implies that the Stokes operator in a three-dimensional Lipschitz domain generates a bounded analytic semigroup in $L^p$ for $(3/2)-\varep < p< 3+ε$. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of M. Taylor.

Convergence Rates in L^2 for Elliptic Homogenization Problems

We study rates of convergence of solutions in L^2 and H^{1/2} for a family of elliptic systems {L_ε} with rapidly oscillating oscillating coefficients in Lipschitz domains with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. As a consequence, we obtain convergence rates for Dirichlet, Neumann, and Steklov eigenvalues of {L_ε}. Most of our results, which rely on the recently established uniform estimates for the L^2 Dirichlet and Neumann problems in \cite{12,13}, are new even for smooth domains.

Homogenization of Elliptic Systems with Neumann Boundary Conditions

The main purpose of this work is to study uniform regularity estimates for a family of elliptic operators $\{\mathcal{L}_\varepsilon, \varepsilon>0\}$, arising in the theory of homogenization, with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish sharp $W^{1,p}$ estimates, Lipschitz estimates, and nontangential maximal function estimates, which are uniform in the parameter $\varepsilon$, on solutions with Neumann boundary conditions in $C^{1,α}$ domains.
