A Penrose limit for type IIB $AdS_6$ solutions

In this paper a Penrose limit is constructed for type IIB $AdS_6\times S^2\times Σ$ supergravity solutions. These solutions are dual to five dimensional SCFTs related to (p,q) five brane webs, which can often be described in terms of long quiver gauge theories. The null geodesic from which the Penrose limit is constructed is localized at a unique point on the two dimensional Riemann surface $Σ$, where the $AdS_6$ and $S^2$ metric factors are extremal. The resulting pp-wave spacetime takes a universal form. The world sheet action of the Green-Schwarz string is quadratic in the light cone gauge and the spectrum of string excitations is obtained.

Janus and RG interfaces in three-dimensional gauged supergravity II: General $α$

In this paper, we continue the study of Janus and RG-flow interfaces in three dimensional supergravity continuing the work presented in [1]. We consider ${\cal N}=8$ gauged supergravity theories which have a ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ $AdS_3$ vacuum with $D^1(2,1;α) \times D^1(2,1;α)$ symmetry for general $α$. We derive the BPS flow equations and find numerical solutions. Some holographic quantities such as the entanglement entropy are calculated.

Janus and RG-flow interfaces in three-dimensional gauged supergravity

In this paper, we construct Janus-type solutions of three-dimensional gauged supergravity with sixteen supersymmetries. We find solutions which correspond to interfaces between the same CFT on both sides, as well as RG-flow interfaces between CFTs with different numbers of supersymmetries and central charges. The solutions are obtained by solving the flow equations derived from the supersymmetry variations, and they preserve some fraction of the supersymmetries of the $\AdS_3$ vacua.

Holographic Line Defects in $D=4$, $N=2$ Gauged Supergravity

We construct solutions of four-dimensional $N=2$ gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets which are holographically dual to superconformal line defects. For the gauged STU and the $SU(1,n)/U(1)\times SU(n)$ coset models, we use the solutions to calculate holographic observables such as the expectation value of the defect and one-point functions in the presence of the defect.

Janus on the Brane

We present a non-supersymmetric deformation of probe branes describing conformal defects of codimension two in AdS/CFT. The worldvolume of the probe branes is deformed from $AdS_{p}\times S^1$ embedded in an $AdS_{p+2} \times \mathcal M^{D-p-2}$ background to an embedding of Janus form, which uses an $AdS_{p-1}$ slicing of $AdS_p$ and in which the brane bends along the slicing coordinate. In field theory terms this realizes conformal interfaces on codimension-two defects. We discuss these "Janus on the brane" solutions for $AdS_3\times S^1$ D3-branes in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ solution of Type IIB, realizing interfaces on surface defects in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM, and show that similar solutions exist for probe branes in $AdS_{p+2}\times S^{9-p}$ vacua of M-theory and in the $AdS_6\times S^4$ solution of massive Type IIA.

Holographic Surface Defects in $D=5$, $N=4$ Gauged Supergravity

Solutions describing holographic surface defects in $D=5,N=4$ gauged supergravity theories are constructed. It is shown that a surface defect solution in pure Romans' gauged supergravity is singular. Adding a single vector multiplet allows for the construction of a non-singular solution. The on-shell action and one point functions of operators in the presence of the defect are computed using holographic renormalization.

A note on entanglement entropy for topological interfaces in RCFTs

In this paper we calculate the entanglement entropy for topological interfaces in rational conformal field theories for the case where the interface lies at the boundary of the entangling interval and for the case where it is located in the center of the entangling interval. We compare the results to each other and also to the recently calculated left/right entropy of a related BCFT. We also comment of the entanglement entropies for topological interfaces for a free compactified boson and Liouville theory.

Holographic entanglement entropy of surface defects

We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy in type IIB supergravity solutions that are dual to half-BPS disorder-type surface defects in ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory. The entanglement entropy is calculated for a ball-shaped region bisected by a surface defect. Using the bubbling supergravity solutions we also compute the expectation value of the defect operator. Combining our result with the previously-calculated one-point function of the stress tensor in the presence of the defect, we adapt the calculation of Lewkowycz and Maldacena to obtain a second expression for the entanglement entropy. Our two expressions agree up to an additional term, whose possible origin and significance is discussed

Entanglement entropy of Wilson surfaces from bubbling geometries in M-theory

We consider solutions of eleven-dimensional supergravity constructed in [1,2] that are half-BPS, locally asymptotic to $AdS_7\times S^4$ and are the holographic dual of heavy Wilson surfaces in the six-dimensional $(2,0)$ theory. Using these bubbling solutions we calculate the holographic entanglement entropy for a spherical entangling surface in the presence of a planar Wilson surface. In addition, we calculate the holographic stress tensor and, by evaluating the on-shell supergravity action, the expectation value of the Wilson surface operator.

Higher Spin Lifshitz Theories and the KdV-Hierarchy

In this paper three dimensional higher spin theories in the Chern-Simons formulation with gauge algebra $sl(N,R)$ are investigated which have Lifshitz symmetry with scaling exponent $z$. We show that an explicit map exists for all $z$ and $N$ relating the Lifshitz Chern-Simons theory to the $(n,m)$ element of the KdV hierarchy. Furthermore we show that the map and hence the conserved charges are independent of $z$. We derive these result from the Drinfeld-Sokolov formalism of integrable systems.

Entanglement entropy of Wilson loops: Holography and matrix models

A half-BPS circular Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in an arbitrary representation is described by a Gaussian matrix model with a particular insertion. The additional entanglement entropy of a spherical region in the presence of such a loop was recently computed by Lewkowycz and Maldacena using exact matrix model results. In this note we utilize the supergravity solutions that are dual to such Wilson loops in a representation with order $N^2$ boxes to calculate this entropy holographically. Employing the matrix model results of Gomis, Matsuura, Okuda and Trancanelli we express this holographic entanglement entropy in a form that can be compared with the calculation of Lewkowycz and Maldacena. We find complete agreement between the matrix model and holographic calculations.

Holographic Entropy and Calabi's Diastasis

The entanglement entropy for interfaces and junctions of two-dimensional CFTs is evaluated on holographically dual half-BPS solutions to six-dimensional Type 4b supergravity with m anti-symmetric tensor supermultiplets. It is shown that the moduli space for an N-junction solution projects to N points in the Kaehler manifold SO(2,m)/( SO(2) x SO(m)). For N=2 the interface entropy is expressed in terms of the central charge and Calabi's diastasis function on SO(2,m)/(SO(2) x SO(m)), thereby lending support from holography to a proposal of Bachas, Brunner, Douglas, and Rastelli. For N=3, the entanglement entropy for a 3-junction decomposes into a sum of diastasis functions between pairs, weighed by combinations of the three central charges, provided the flux charges are all parallel to one another or, more generally, provided the space of flux charges is orthogonal to the space of unattracted scalars. Under similar assumptions for N>3, the entanglement entropy for the N-junction solves a variational problem whose data consist of the N central charges, and the diastasis function evaluated between pairs of N asymptotic AdS_3 x S^3 regions.

A note on interface solutions in higher-spin gravity

In this paper we construct holographic interface solutions in the Chern-Simons formulation of higher-spin gravity. It is shown that the global regularity of the gauge connection imposes conditions on the conserved currents consistent with interface being totally transmissive or topological. An interface solution connecting the $W_3$ and $W_3^{(2)}$ vacuum is constructed in the $SL(3,R)$ higher spin gravity. An interface solution corresponding to turning on relevant deformations in higher spin $SL(4,R)$ gravity is presented.

Lifshitz black holes in higher spin gravity

We study asymptotically Lifshitz solutions to three dimensional higher spin gravity in the SL(3,R)xSL(3,R) Chern-Simons formulation. We begin by specifying the most general connections satisfying Lifshitz boundary conditions, and we verify that their algebra of symmetries contains a Lifshitz sub-algebra. We then exhibit connections that can be viewed as higher spin Lifshitz black holes. We show that when suitable holonomy conditions are imposed, these black holes obey sensible thermodynamics and possess a gauge in which the corresponding metric exhibits a regular horizon.

A supersymmetric holographic dual of a fractional topological insulator

We construct a supersymmetric generalization of the holographic dual of a fractional topological insulator found in \cite{HoyosBadajoz:2010ac}. This is accomplished by introducing a nontrivial gauge field on the world volume of the probe D7 brane. The BPS equations are derived from the $κ$-symmetry transformation of the probe brane. The BPS equations are shown to reduce to two first oder nonlinear partial differential equations. Solutions of the BPS equations correspond to a probe brane configuration which preserves four of the thirty-two supersymmetries of the $AdS_5\times S^5$ background. Solutions of the BPS equations which correspond to a holographic fractional topological insulator are obtained numerically.

Black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity: A review

We review recent progress in the construction of black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity theories. Starting from spin-3 gravity and working our way toward the theory of an infinite tower of higher spins coupled to matter, we show how to harness higher spin gauge invariance to consistently generalize familiar notions of black holes. We review the construction of black holes with conserved higher spin charges and the computation of their partition functions to leading asymptotic order. In view of the AdS/CFT correspondence as applied to certain vector-like conformal field theories with extended conformal symmetry, we successfully compare to CFT calculations in a generalized Cardy regime. A brief recollection of pertinent aspects of ordinary gravity is also given.

Holographic RG-flows and Boundary CFTs

Solutions of $(d+1)$-dimensional gravity coupled to a scalar field are obtained, which holographically realize interface and boundary CFTs. The solution utilizes a Janus-like $\mathrm{AdS}_d$ slicing ansatz and corresponds to a deformation of the CFT by a spatially-dependent coupling of a relevant operator. The BCFT solutions are singular in the bulk, but physical quantities such as the holographic entanglement entropy can be calculated.

Conical Defects in Higher Spin Theories

We study conical defect geometries in the SL(N) Chern-Simons formulation of higher spin gauge theories in AdS_3. We argue that (for N\geq 4) there are special values of the deficit angle for which these geometries are actually smooth configurations of the underlying theory. We also exhibit a gauge in which these geometries can be viewed as wormholes interpolating between two distinct asymptotically AdS_3 spacetimes. Remarkably, the spectrum of smooth SL(N,C) solutions, after an appropriate analytic continuation, exactly matches that of the so-called "light primaries" in the minimal model W_N CFTs at finite N. This gives a candidate bulk interpretation of the latter states in the holographic duality proposed in [1].

Exact half-BPS string-junction solutions in six-dimensional supergravity

We construct SO(2,1) x SO(3)-invariant half-BPS solutions in six-dimensional (0,4) supergravity with m tensor multiplets. The space-time manifold of each one of these solutions consists of an AdS_2 x S^2 warped over a Riemann surface Sigma with boundary. The most general local solution is parametrized by one real harmonic function, and m+2 holomorphic functions which are subject to a quadratic constraint and a hermitian inequality, both of which are manifestly SO(2,m) invariant. Imposing suitable conditions on these harmonic and holomorphic functions, we construct globally regular supergravity solutions with N distinct AdS_3 x S^3 asymptotic regions and contractible Sigma. These solutions have an intricate moduli space, whose dimension equals 2(m+1)N -m-2 and matches the counting of three-form charge vectors and un-attracted scalars of the tensor multiplet. Exact explicit formulas for all supergravity fields are obtained in terms of the moduli. Our solutions give the near-horizon geometries for junctions of N self-dual strings in six dimensions, and are holographic duals to CFTs defined on N half-planes which share a common interface line. For m=5, the solutions lift to quarter-BPS solutions for six-dimensional (4,4) supergravity.

Higher Spin Black Holes

We study classical solutions of three dimensional higher spin gravity in the Chern-Simons formulation. We find solutions that generalize the BTZ black hole and carry spin-3 charge. The black hole entropy formula yields a result for the asymptotic growth of the partition function at finite spin-3 chemical potential. Along the way, we develop technology for computing AdS/CFT correlation functions involving higher spin operators.

Janus Black Holes

In this paper Janus black holes in AdS3 are considered. These are static solutions of an Einstein-scalar system with broken translation symmetry along the horizon. These solutions are dual to interface conformal field theories at finite temperature. An approximate solution is first constructed using perturbation theory around a planar BTZ black hole. Numerical and exact solutions valid for all sets of parameters are then found and compared. Using the exact solution the thermodynamics of the system is analyzed. The entropy associated with the Janus black hole is calculated and it is found that the entropy of the black Janus is the sum of the undeformed black hole entropy and the entanglement entropy associated with the defect.

Simple holographic duals to boundary CFTs

By relaxing the regularity conditions imposed in arXiv:1107.1722 on half-BPS solutions to six-dimensional Type~4b supergravity, we enlarge the space of solutions to include two new half-BPS configurations, which we refer to as the \kap\ and the \funnel. We give evidence that the \kap\ and \funnel\ can be interpreted as fully back-reacted brane solutions with respectively $AdS_2$ and $AdS_2\times S^2$ world volumes. \kap\ and \funnel\ solutions with a single asymptotic $AdS_3 \times S^3$ region are constructed analytically. We argue that \kap\ solutions provide simple examples of holographic duals to boundary CFTs in two dimensions and present calculations of their holographic boundary entropy to support the BCFT dual picture.

Spacetime Geometry in Higher Spin Gravity

Higher spin gravity is an interesting toy model of stringy geometry. Particularly intriguing is the presence of higher spin gauge transformations that redefine notions of invariance in gravity: the existence of event horizons and singularities in the metric become gauge dependent. In previous work, solutions of spin-3 gravity in the SL(3,R) x SL(3,R) Chern-Simons formulation were found, and were proposed to play the role of black holes. However, in the gauge employed there, the spacetime metric describes a traversable wormhole connecting two asymptotic regions, rather than a black hole. In this paper, we show explicitly that under a higher spin gauge transformation these solutions can be transformed to describe black holes with manifestly smooth event horizons, thereby changing the spacetime causal structure. A related aspect is that the Chern-Simons theory admits two distinct AdS_3 vacua with different asymptotic W-algebra symmetries and central charges. We show that these vacua are connected by an explicit, Lorentz symmetry-breaking RG flow, of which our solutions represent finite temperature generalizations. These features will be present in any SL(N,R) x SL(N,R) Chern-Simons theory of higher spins.

Boundary entropy of supersymmetric Janus solutions

In this paper we compute the holographic boundary entropy for half-BPS Janus deformations of the $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ vacuum of type IIB supergravity. Previous work \cite{Chiodaroli:2009yw} has shown that there are two independent deformations of this sort. In one case, the six-dimensional dilaton jumps across the interface, while the other case displays a jump of axion and four-form potential. In case of a jump of the six-dimensional dilaton, it is possible to compare the holographic result with the weak-coupling result for a two-dimensional interface CFT where the radii of the compactified bosons jump across the interface. We find exact agreement between holographic and CFT results. This is to be contrasted with the holographic calculation for the non-supersymmetric Janus solution, which agrees with the CFT result only at the leading order in the jump parameter. We also examine the implications of the holographic calculation in case of a solution with a jump in the axion, which can be associated with a deformation of the CFT by the $Z_2$-orbifold twist operator.

Open Worldsheets for Holographic Interfaces

Type IIB supergravity admits Janus and multi-Janus solutions with eight unbroken supersymmetries that are locally asymptotic to AdS_3 x S^3 x M_4 (where M_4 is either T^4 or K_3). These solutions are dual to two or more CFTs defined on half-planes which share a common line interface. Their geometry consists of an AdS_2 x S^2 x M_4 fibration over a simply connected Riemann surface Sigma with boundary. In the present paper, we show that regular exact solutions exist also for surfaces Sigma which are not simply connected. Specifically, we construct in detail solutions for which Sigma has the topology of an annulus. This construction is generalized to produce solutions for any surface Sigma with the topology of an open string worldsheet with g holes.

String Junctions and Holographic Interfaces

In this paper we study half-BPS type IIB supergravity solutions with multiple $AdS_3\times S^3\times M_4$ asymptotic regions, where $M_4$ is either $T^4$ or $K_3$. These solutions were first constructed in [1] and have geometries given by the warped product of $AdS_2 \times S^2 \times M_4 $ over $Σ$, where $Σ$ is a Riemann surface. We show that the holographic boundary has the structure of a star graph, i.e. $n$ half-lines joined at a point. The attractor mechanism and the relation of the solutions to junctions of self-dual strings in six-dimensional supergravity are discussed. The solutions of [1] are constructed introducing two meromorphic and two harmonic functions defined on $Σ$. We focus our analysis on solutions corresponding to junctions of three different conformal field theories and show that the conditions for having a solution charged only under Ramond-Ramond three-form fields reduce to relations involving the positions of the poles and the residues of the relevant harmonic and meromorphic functions. The degeneration limit in which some of the poles collide is analyzed in detail. Finally, we calculate the holographic boundary entropy for a junction of three CFTs and obtain a simple expression in terms of poles and residues.

Half-BPS Solutions locally asymptotic to AdS_3 x S^3 and interface conformal field theories

Type IIB superstring theory has AdS_3 x S^3 x M_4 (where the manifold M_4 is either K_3 or T^4) solutions which preserve sixteen supersymmetries. In this paper we consider half-BPS solutions which are locally asymptotic to AdS_3 x S^3 x M_4 and preserve eight of the sixteen supersymmetries. We reduce the BPS equations and the Bianchi identity for the self-dual five-form field to a set of four differential equations. The complete local solution can be parameterized in terms of two harmonic and two holomorphic functions and all bosonic fields have explicit expressions in terms of these functions. We analyze the conditions for global regularity and construct new half-BPS Janus-solutions which have two asymptotic AdS_3 regions. In addition, our analysis proves the global regularity of a class of solutions with more than two asymptotic AdS_3 regions. Finally, we discuss the dual interpretation as a supersymmetric interface theory for the half-BPS Janus solutions carrying only Ramond-Ramond three-form charge.

Janus solutions in M-theory

We present a one-parameter deformation of the AdS_{4} x S^{7} vacuum, which is a regular solution in M-theory, invariant under SO(2,2) x SO(4) x SO(4), and which preserves 16 supersymmetries. The solution corresponds to a holographic realization of a Janus-like interface/defect theory, despite the absence of a dilaton in M-theory. The 2+1-dimensional CFT dual results from the maximally symmetric CFT through the insertion of a dimension 2 operator which is localized along a 1+1-dimensional linear interface/defect, thereby partially breaking the superconformal symmetry. The solution admits a regular ABJM reduction to a quotient solution which is invariant under SO(2,2) x SO(4) x U(1)^2, preserves 12 supersymmetries, and provides a Janus-like interface/defect solution in ABJM theory.

Exact Half-BPS Flux Solutions in M-theory I, Local Solutions

The complete eleven-dimensional supergravity solutions with 16 supersymmetries on manifolds of the form $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times Σ$, with isometry $SO(2,2) \times SO(4) \times SO(4)$, and with either $AdS_4 \times S^7$ or $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior, are obtained in exact form. The two-dimensional parameter space $Σ$ is a Riemann surface with boundary, over which the product space $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3$ is warped. By mapping the reduced BPS equations to an integrable system of the sine-Gordon/Liouville type, and then mapping this integrable system onto a linear equation, the general local solutions are constructed explicitly in terms of one harmonic function on $Σ$, and an integral transform of two further harmonic functions on $Σ$. The solutions to the BPS equations are shown to automatically solve the Bianchi identities and field equations for the 4-form field, as well as Einstein's equations. The solutions we obtain have non-vanishing 4-form field strength on each of the three factors of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3$, and include fully back-reacted M2-branes in $AdS_7 \times S^4$ and M5-branes in $AdS_4 \times S^7$. No interpolating solutions exist with mixed $AdS_4 \times S^7$ and $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior. Global regularity of these local solutions, as well as the existence of further solutions with neither $AdS_4 \times S^7$ nor $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior will be studied elsewhere.

Time dependent black holes and thermal equilibration

We study aspects of a recently proposed exact time dependent black hole solution of IIB string theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The dual field theory is a thermal system in which initially a vacuum density for a non-conserved operator is turned on. We can see that in agreement with general thermal field theory expectation the system equilibrates: the expectation value of the non-conserved operator goes to zero exponentially and the entropy increases. In the field theory the process can be described quantitatively in terms of a thermofield state and exact agreement with the gravity answers is found.

From p-branes to fluxbranes and back

In this note we study aspects of the interplay between fluxbranes and p-branes. We describe how a fluxbrane can be physically realized as a limit of a brane-antibrane configuration, in a manner similar to the way a uniform electric field appears in between the plates of a capacitor. We also study the evolution of a fluxbrane after nucleation of p-branes. We find that Kaluza-Klein fluxbranes do relax by forming brane-antibrane pairs or spherical branes, but we also find that for fluxtubes with dilaton coupling in a different range, the field strength does not relax, instead it becomes stronger after each nucleation bounce. We speculate on a possible runaway instability of such fluxtubes an an eventual breakdown of their classical description.

D-instanton induced interactions on a D3-brane

Non-perturbative features of the derivative expansion of the effective action of a single D3-brane are obtained by considering scattering amplitudes of open and closed strings. This motivates expressions for the coupling constant dependence of world-volume interactions of the form $(\partial F)^4$ (where F is the Born-Infeld field strength), $(\partial^2ϕ)^4$ (where $ϕ$ are the normal coordinates of the D3-brane) and other interactions related by $\calN=4$ supersymmetry. These include terms that transform with non-trivial modular weight under Montonen-Olive duality. The leading D-instanton contributions that enter into these effective interactions are also shown to follow from an explicit stringy construction of the moduli space action for the D-instanton/D3-brane system in the presence of D3-brane open-string sources (but in the absence of a background antisymmetric tensor potential). Extending this action to include closed-string sources leads to a unified description of non-perturbative terms in the effective action of the form (embedding curvature)$^2$ together with open-string interactions that describe contributions of the second fundamental form.

Non-BPS D-branes and enhanced symmetry in an asymmetric orbifold

In this paper properties of D branes in a nine dimensional asymmetric orbifold are discussed, using a $(-1)^{F_L}σ_{1/2}$ projection, where $F_L$ is the leftmoving space-time fermion number and $σ_{1/2}$ is a freely acting shift of order two. There are two types of non BPS D branes, which are stable at $R>2$ and $R<2$ respectively. At R=2 there is a perturbative enhancement of gauge symmetry and the two types of branes are related by a global bulk symmetry transformation. At this point in the moduli space the associated boundary states are constructed using a free fermion representation of the theory. Some aspects of the enhancement of gauge symmetry in the S-dual type $\tilde I$ theory are discussed.

Supergravity Instantons and the Universal Hypermultiplet

The effective action of N=2 supersymmetric 5-dimensional supergravity arising from compactifications of M-theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds receives non-perturbative corrections from wrapped Euclidean membranes and fivebranes. These contributions can be interpreted as instanton corrections in the 5 dimensional field theory. Focusing on the universal hypermultiplet, a solution of this type is presented and the instanton action is calculated, generalizing previous results involving membrane instantons. The instanton action is not a sum of membrane and fivebrane contributions: it has the form reminiscent of non-threshold bound states.

D0-branes in Gepner models and N=2 black holes

In this paper D-brane boundary states constructed in Gepner models are used to analyze some aspects of the dynamics of D0-branes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II theories to four dimensions. It is shown that the boundary states correspond to BPS objects carrying dyonic charges. By analyzing the couplings to closed string fields a correspondence between the D0-branes and extremal charged black holes in N=2 supergravity is found.

Heterotic/type I duality, D-instantons and an N=2 AdS/CFT correspondence

D-instanton effects are studied for the IIB orientifold T^2/IΩ(-1)^{F_L} of Sen using type I/heterotic duality. An exact one loop threshold calculation of t_8 \tr F^4 and t_8(\tr F^2)^2 terms for the heterotic string on T^2 with Wilson lines breaking SO(32) to SO(8)^4 is related to D-instanton induced terms in the worldvolume of D7 branes in the orientifold. Introducing D3 branes and using the AdS/CFT correspondence in this case, these terms are used to calculate Yang-Mills instanton contributions to four point functions of the large N_c limit of N=2 USp(2N_c) SYM with four fundamental and one antisymmetric tensor hypermultiplets.

Light-cone Quantum Mechanics of the Eleven-dimensional Superparticle

The linearized interactions of eleven-dimensional supergravity are obtained in a manifestly supersymmetric light-cone gauge formalism. D-branes in Gepner models and supersymmetry

Boundary states corresponding to wrapped D-branes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II strings are discussed using Gepner models. In particular boundary conditions corresponding to D-0 branes and D-instantons in four dimensions are investigated. The boundary states constructed by Recknagel and Schomerus are analyzed in the light-cone gauge and the broken and conserved space-time supersymmetry charges are found. The geometrical interpretation of these algebraically constructed boundary states is clarified in some simple cases. Moreover, the action of mirror symmetry and other discrete symmetries of the Gepner model on the boundary states are discussed. As an application the boundary states are used to calculate instanton induced corrections to metric on the hypermultiplets in the N=2 effective action.

Sixteen-fermion and related terms in M-theory on T**2

Certain one-loop processes in eleven-dimensional supergravity compactified on T**2 determine exact, non-perturbative, terms in the effective action of type II string theories compactified on a circle. One example is the modular invariant U(1)-violating interaction of sixteen complex spin-1/2 fermions of ten-dimensional type IIB theory. This term, together with the (curvature)**4 term, and many other terms of the same dimension are all explicitly related by supersymmetry.

Comments on Three-Branes

The Born--Infeld-like effective world-volume theory of a single 3-brane is deduced from a manifestly space-time supersymmetric description of the corresponding $D$-brane. This is shown to be invariant under $SL(2,R)$ transformations that act on the abelian gauge field as well as the bulk fields. The effective theory of two nearby parallel three-branes involves massive world-volume supermultiplets which transform under $SL(2,Z)$ into the dyonic solitons of four-dimensional $N=4$ spontaneously broken $SU(2)$ Yang--Mills theory.

Multi-boundary effects in Dirichlet String Theory

String amplitudes with an arbitrary number of world-sheet boundaries on which the coordinates satisfy Dirichlet boundary conditions are analyzed in a path integral framework. Special attention is payed to the novel divergences associated with such conditions. Certain helicity amplitudes involving massless closed-string states are free of such divergences to all orders in perturbation theory and their behavior can be analysed unambiguously. The high energy fixed-angle behavior of these amplitudes is discussed in the presence of one or two boundaries and the asymptotic behavior of the amplitudes is shown to be power behaved.
