Hitting distribution of a correlated planar Brownian motion in a disk

In this paper we study the hitting probability of a circumference $C_R$ for a correlated Brownian motion $\underline{B}(t)=\left(B_1(t), B_2(t)\right)$, $ρ$ being the correlation coefficient. The analysis starts by first mapping the circle $C_R$ into an ellipse $E$ with semiaxes depending on $ρ$ and transforming the differential operator governing the hitting distribution into the classical Laplace operator. By means of two different approaches (one obtained by applying elliptic coordinates) we obtain the desired distribution as a series of Poisson kernels.

Random motions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with orthogonal directions

This paper is devoted to the detailed analysis of three-dimensional motions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with orthogonal directions switching at Poisson times and moving with constant speed $c>0$. The study of the random position at an arbitrary time $t>0$ on the surface of the support, forming an octahedron $S_{ct}$, is completely carried out on the edges $E_{ct}$ and faces $F_{ct}$. In particular, the motion on the faces $F_{ct}$ is analysed by means of a transformation which reduces it to a three-directions planar random motion. This permits us to obtain an integral representation on $F_{ct}$ in terms of integral of products of first order Bessel functions. The investigation of the distribution of the position $p=p(t,x,y,z)$ inside $S_{ct}$ implied the derivation of a sixth-order partial differential equation governing $p$ (expressed in terms of the products of three D'Alembert operators). A number of results, also in explicit form, concern the time spent on each direction and the position reached by each coordinates as the motion devolpes. The analysis is carried out when the incoming direction is orthogonal to the ongoing one and also when all directions can be uniformely choosen at each Poisson event. If the switches are governed by homogeneus Poisson process many explicit results are obtained.

Estimates for distribution of suprema of solutions to higher-order partial differential equations with random initial conditions

In the paper we consider higher-order partial differential equations from the class of linear dispersive equations. We investigate solutions to these equations subject to random initial conditions given by harmonizable $φ$-sub-Gaussian processes. The main results are the bounds for the distributions of the suprema for solutions. We present the examples of processes for which the assumptions of the general result are verified and bounds are written in the explicit form. The main result is also specified for the case of Gaussian initial condition.

On the distribution of the maximum of the telegraph process

In this paper we present the distribution of the maximum of the telegraph process in the cases where the initial velocity is positive or negative with an even and an odd number of velocity reversals. For the telegraph process with positive initial velocity a reflection principle is proved to be valid while in the case of an initial leftward displacement the conditional distributions are perturbed by a positive probability of never visiting the half positive axis. Various relationships are established among the mentioned four classes of conditional distributions of the maximum. The unconditional distributions of the maximum of the telegraph process are obtained for positive and negative initial steps as well as their limiting behaviour. Furthermore the cumulative distributions and the general moments of the conditional maximum are presented.

Random flights connecting Porous Medium and Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations

In this paper we consider the Porous Medium Equation and establish a relationship between its Kompanets-Zel'dovich-Barenblatt solution $u(\xd,t), \xd\in \mathbb R^d,t>0$ and random flights. The time-rescaled version of $u(\xd,t)$ is the fundamental solution of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation which governs the distribution of random flights performed by a particle whose displacements have a Dirichlet probability distribution and choosing directions uniformly on a $d$-dimensional sphere (see, e.g., \cite{dgo}). We consider the space-fractional version of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation and present the solution of the related Cauchy problem in terms of the probability distributions of random flights governed by the classical Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation. Furthermore, this research is also aimed at studying the relationship between the solutions of a fractional Porous Medium Equation and the fractional Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation. A considerable part of the paper is devoted to the analysis of the probabilistic tools of the solutions of the fractional equations. Also the extension to higher-order Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation is considered and the solutions interpreted as compositions of laws of pseudoprocesses.

A note on Hadamard fractional differential equations with varying coefficients and their applications in probability

In this paper we show several connections between special functions arising from generalized COM-Poisson-type statistical distributions and integro-differential equations with varying coefficients involving Hadamard-type operators. New analytical results are obtained, showing the particular role of Hadamard-type derivatives in connection with a recently introduced generalization of the Le Roy function. We are also able to prove a general connection between fractional hyper-Bessel-type equations involving Hadamard operators and Le Roy functions.

Time-inhomogeneous jump processes and variable order operators

In this paper we introduce non-decreasing jump processes with independent and time non-homogeneous increments. Although they are not Lévy processes, they somehow generalize subordinators in the sense that their Laplace exponents are possibly different Bernštein functions for each time $t$. By means of these processes, a generalization of subordinate semigroups in the sense of Bochner is proposed. Because of time-inhomogeneity, two-parameter semigroups (propagators) arise and we provide a Phillips formula which leads to time dependent generators. The inverse processes are also investigated and the corresponding governing equations obtained in the form of generalized variable order fractional equations. An application to a generalized subordinate Brownian motion is also examined.

Fractional diffusions with time-varying coefficients

This paper is concerned with the fractionalized diffusion equations governing the law of the fractional Brownian motion $B_H(t)$. We obtain solutions of these equations which are probability laws extending that of $B_H(t)$. Our analysis is based on McBride fractional operators generalizing the hyper-Bessel operators $L$ and converting their fractional power $L^α$ into Erdélyi--Kober fractional integrals. We study also probabilistic properties of the r.v.'s whose distributions satisfy space-time fractional equations involving Caputo and Riesz fractional derivatives. Some results emerging from the analysis of fractional equations with time-varying coefficients have the form of distributions of time-changed r.v.'s.

Motion among random obstacles on a hyperbolic space

We consider the motion of a particle along the geodesic lines of the Poincarè half-plane. The particle is specularly reflected when it hits randomly-distributed obstacles that are assumed to be motionless. This is the hyperbolic version of the well-known Lorentz Process studied by Gallavotti in the Euclidean context. We analyse the limit in which the density of the obstacles increases to infinity and the size of each obstacle vanishes: under a suitable scaling, we prove that our process converges to a Markovian process, namely a random flight on the hyperbolic manifold.

Population models at stochastic times

In this article, we consider time-changed models of population evolution $\mathcal{X}^f(t)=\mathcal{X}(H^f(t))$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is a counting process and $H^f$ is a subordinator with Laplace exponent $f$. In the case $\mathcal{X}$ is a pure birth process, we study the form of the distribution, the intertimes between successive jumps and the condition of explosion (also in the case of killed subordinators). We also investigate the case where $\mathcal{X}$ represents a death process (linear or sublinear) and study the extinction probabilities as a function of the initial population size $n_0$. Finally, the subordinated linear birth-death process is considered. A special attention is devoted to the case where birth and death rates coincide; the sojourn times are also analysed.

Space-time fractional equations and the related stable processes at random time

In this paper we consider the general fractional equation \sum_{j=1}^m λ_j \frac{\partial^{ν_j}}{\partial t^{ν_j}} w(x_1,..., x_n ; t) = -c^2 (-Δ)^βw(x_1,..., x_n ; t), for ν_j \in (0,1], β\in (0,1] with initial condition w(x_1,..., x_n ; 0)= \prod_{j=1}^n δ(x_j). The solution of the Cauchy problem above coincides with the distribution of the n-dimensional process \bm{S}_n^{2β} \mathcal{L} c^2 {L}^{ν_1,..., ν_m} (t) \r, t>0, where \bm{S}_n^{2β} is an isotropic stable process independent from {L}^{ν_1,..., ν_m}(t) which is the inverse of {H}^{ν_1,..., ν_m} (t) = \sum_{j=1}^m λ_j^{1/ν_j} H^{ν_j} (t), t>0, with H^{ν_j}(t) independent, positively-skewed stable r.v.'s of order ν_j. The problem considered includes the fractional telegraph equation as a special case as well as the governing equation of stable processes. The composition \bm{S}_n^{2β} (c^2 {L}^{ν_1,..., ν_m} (t)), t>0, supplies a probabilistic representation for the solutions of the fractional equations above and coincides for β= 1 with the n-dimensional Brownian motion at the time {L}^{ν_1,..., ν_m} (t), t>0. The iterated process {L}^{ν_1,..., ν_m}_r (t), t>0, inverse to {H}^{ν_1,..., ν_m}_r (t) =\sum_{j=1}^m λ_j^{1/ν_j} _1H^{ν_j} (_{2}H^{ν_j} (_3H^{ν_j} (... _{r}H^{ν_j} (t)...))), t>0, permits us to construct the process \bm{S}_n^{2β} (c^2 {L}^{ν_1,..., ν_m}_r (t)), t>0, the distribution of which solves a space-fractional generalized telegraph equation. For r \to \infty and β= 1 we obtain a distribution which represents the n-dimensional generalisation of the Gauss-Laplace law and solves the equation \sum_{j=1}^m λ_j w(x_1,..., x_n) = c^2 \sum_{j=1}^n \frac{\partial^2}{\partial x_j^2} w(x_1,..., x_n).

Spectral functions related to some fractional stochastic differential equations

In this paper we consider fractional higher-order stochastic differential equations of the form \begin{align*} \left( μ+ c_α\frac{d^α}{d(-t)^α} \right)^βX(t) = \mathcal{E}(t) , \quad t\geq 0,\; μ>0,\; β>0,\; α\in (0,1) \cup \mathbb{N} \end{align*} where $\mathcal{E}(t)$ is a Gaussian white noise. We derive stochastic processes satisfying the above equations of which we obtain explicitly the covariance functions and the spectral functions.

Counting processes with Bernštein intertimes and random jumps

We consider here point processes $N^f(t)$, $t>0$, with independent increments and integer-valued jumps whose distribution is expressed in terms of Bernštein functions $f$ with Lévy measure $ν$. We obtain the general expression of the probability generating functions $G^f$ of $N^f$, the equations governing the state probabilities $p_k^f$ of $N^f$, and their corresponding explicit forms. We also give the distribution of the first-passage times $T_k^f$ of $N^f$, and the related governing equation. We study in detail the cases of the fractional Poisson process, the relativistic Poisson process and the Gamma Poisson process whose state probabilities have the form of a negative binomial. The distribution of the times $τ_j^{l_j}$ of jumps with height $l_j$ ($\sum_{j=1}^rl_j = k$) under the condition $N(t) = k$ for all these special processes is investigated in detail.

Fractional Klein-Gordon equation for linear dispersive phenomena: analytical methods and applications

In this paper we discuss some exact results related to the fractional Klein--Gordon equation involving fractional powers of the D'Alembert operator. By means of a space-time transformation, we reduce the fractional Klein--Gordon equation to a fractional hyper-Bessel-type equation. We find an exact analytic solution by using the McBride theory of fractional powers of hyper-Bessel operators. A discussion of these results within the framework of linear dispersive wave equations is provided. We also present exact solutions of the fractional Klein-Gordon equation in the higher dimensional cases. Finally, we suggest a method of finding travelling wave solutions of the nonlinear fractional Klein-Gordon equation with power law nonlinearities.

preprint2014arXiv

Fractional Klein-Gordon equations and related stochastic processes

This paper presents finite-velocity random motions driven by fractional Klein-Gordon equations of order $α\in (0,1]$. A key tool in the analysis is played by the McBride's theory which converts fractional hyper-Bessel operators into Erdelyi-Kober integral operators. Special attention is payed to the fractional telegraph process whose space-dependent distribution solves a non-homogeneous fractional Klein-Gordon equation. The distribution of the fractional telegraph process for $α= 1$ coincides with that of the classical telegraph process and its driving equation converts into the homogeneous Klein-Gordon equation. Fractional planar random motions at finite velocity are also investigated, the corresponding distributions obtained as well as the explicit form of the governing equations. Fractionality is reflected into the underlying random motion because in each time interval a binomial number of deviations $B(n,α)$ (with uniformly-distributed orientation) are considered. The parameter $n$ of $B(n,α)$ is itself a random variable with fractional Poisson distribution, so that fractionality acts as a subsampling of the changes of directions. Finally the behaviour of each coordinate of the planar motion is examined and the corresponding densities obtained. Extensions to $N$-dimensional fractional random flights are envisaged as well as the fractional counterpart of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation to which our theory applies.

Reflecting random flights

We consider random flights in $\mathbb{R}^d$ reflecting on the surface of a sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}_R,$ with center at the origin and with radius $R,$ where reflection is performed by means of circular inversion. Random flights studied in this paper are motions where the orientation of the deviations are uniformly distributed on the unit-radius sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}_1$. We obtain the explicit probability distributions of the position of the moving particle when the number of changes of direction is fixed and equal to $n\geq 1$. We show that these distributions involve functions which are solutions of the Euler-Darboux-Poisson equation. The unconditional probability distributions of the reflecting random flights are obtained by suitably randomizing $n$ by means of a fractional-type Poisson process. Random flights reflecting on hyperplanes according to the optical reflection form are considered and the related distributional properties derived.

State-dependent Fractional Point Processes

The aim of this paper is the analysis of the fractional Poisson process where the state probabilities $p_k^{ν_k}(t)$, $t\ge 0$, are governed by time-fractional equations of order $0<ν_k\leq 1$ depending on the number $k$ of events occurred up to time $t$. We are able to obtain explicitely the Laplace transform of $p_k^{ν_k}(t)$ and various representations of state probabilities. We show that the Poisson process with intermediate waiting times depending on $ν_k$ differs from that constructed from the fractional state equations (in the case $ν_k = ν$, for all $k$, they coincide with the time-fractional Poisson process). We also introduce a different form of fractional state-dependent Poisson process as a weighted sum of homogeneous Poisson processes. Finally we consider the fractional birth process governed by equations with state-dependent fractionality.

Even-order pseudoprocesses on a circle and related Poisson kernels

Pseudoprocesses, constructed by means of the solutions of higher-order heat-type equations have been developed by several authors and many related functionals have been analyzed by means of the Feynman-Kac functional or by means of the Spitzer identity. We here examine even-order pseudoprocesses wrapped up on circles and derive their explicit signed density measures. We observe that circular even-order pseudoprocesses differ substantially from pseudoprocesses on the line because - for $t> \bar{t} > 0$, where $\bar{t}$ is a suitable $n$-dependent time value - they become real random variables. By composing the circular pseudoprocesses with positively-skewed stable processes we arrive at genuine circular processes whose distribution, in the form of Poisson kernels, is obtained. The distribution of circular even-order pseudoprocesses is similar to the Von Mises (or Fisher) circular normal and therefore to the wrapped up law of Brownian motion. Time-fractional and space-fractional equations related to processes and pseudoprocesses on the unit radius circumference are introduced and analyzed.

Fractional Non-Linear, Linear and Sublinear Death Processes

This paper is devoted to the study of a fractional version of non-linear $\mathpzc{M}^ν(t)$, $t>0$, linear $M^ν(t)$, $t>0$ and sublinear $\mathfrak{M}^ν(t)$, $t>0$ death processes. Fractionality is introduced by replacing the usual integer-order derivative in the difference-differential equations governing the state probabilities, with the fractional derivative understood in the sense of Dzhrbashyan--Caputo. We derive explicitly the state probabilities of the three death processes and examine the related probability generating functions and mean values. A useful subordination relation is also proved, allowing us to express the death processes as compositions of their classical counterparts with the random time process $T_{2 ν} (t)$, $t>0$. This random time has one-dimensional distribution which is the folded solution to a Cauchy problem of the fractional diffusion equation.

Higher-order Laplace equations and hyper-Cauchy distributions

In this paper we introduce new distributions which are solutions of higher-order Laplace equations. It is proved that their densities can be obtained by folding and symmetrizing Cauchy distributions. Another class of probability laws related to higher-order Laplace equations is obtained by composing pseudo-processes with positively-skewed Cauchy distributions which produce asymmetric Cauchy densities in the odd-order case. A special attention is devoted to the third-order Laplace equation where the connection between the Cauchy distribution and the Airy functions is obtained and analyzed.

On the Integral of Fractional Poisson Processes

In this paper we consider the Riemann--Liouville fractional integral $\mathcal{N}^{α,ν}(t)= \frac{1}{Γ(α)} \int_0^t (t-s)^{α-1}N^ν(s) \, \mathrm ds $, where $N^ν(t)$, $t \ge 0$, is a fractional Poisson process of order $ν\in (0,1]$, and $α> 0$. We give the explicit bivariate distribution $\Pr \{N^ν(s)=k, N^ν(t)=r \}$, for $t \ge s$, $r \ge k$, the mean $\mathbb{E}\, \mathcal{N}^{α,ν}(t)$ and the variance $\mathbb{V}\text{ar}\, \mathcal{N}^{α,ν}(t)$. We study the process $\mathcal{N}^{α,1}(t)$ for which we are able to produce explicit results for the conditional and absolute variances and means. Much more involved results on $\mathcal{N}^{1,1}(t)$ are presented in the last section where also distributional properties of the integrated Poisson process (including the representation as random sums) is derived. The integral of powers of the Poisson process is examined and its connections with generalised harmonic numbers is discussed.

Pseudoprocesses related to space-fractional higher-order heat-type equations

In this paper we construct pseudo random walks (symmetric and asymmetric) which converge in law to compositions of pseudoprocesses stopped at stable subordinators. We find the higher-order space-fractional heat-type equations whose fundamental solutions coincide with the law of the limiting pseudoprocesses. The fractional equations involve either Riesz operators or their Feller asymmetric counterparts. The main result of this paper is the derivation of pseudoprocesses whose law is governed by heat-type equations of real-valued order $γ>2$. The classical pseudoprocesses are very special cases of those investigated here.

Time-changed processes governed by space-time fractional telegraph equations

In this work we construct compositions of processes of the form \bm{S}_n^{2β}(c^2 \mathpzc{L}^ν(t) \r, t>0, ν\in (0, 1/2], β\in (0,1], n \in \mathbb{N}, whose distribution is related to space-time fractional n-dimensional telegraph equations. We present within a unifying framework the pde connections of n-dimensional isotropic stable processes \bm{S}_n^{2β} whose random time is represented by the inverse \mathpzc{L}^ν(t), t>0, of the superposition of independent positively-skewed stable processes, \mathpzc{H}^ν(t) = H_1^{2ν} (t) + (2λ\r^{\frac{1}ν} H_2^ν(t), t>0, (H_1^{2ν}, H_2^ν, independent stable subordinators). As special cases for n=1, ν= 1/2 and β= 1 we examine the telegraph process T at Brownian time B (Orsingher and Beghin) and establish the equality in distribution B (c^2 \mathpzc{L}^{1/2} (t)) \stackrel{\textrm{law}}{=} T (|B(t)|), t>0. Furthermore the iterated Brownian motion (Allouba and Zheng) and the two-dimensional motion at finite velocity with a random time are investigated. For all these processes we present their counterparts as Brownian motion at delayed stable-distributed time.

Probabilistic representation of fundamental solutions to $\frac{\partial u}{\partial t} = κ_m \frac{\partial^m u}{\partial x^m}$

For the fundamental solutions of heat-type equations of order $n$ we give a general stochastic representation in terms of damped oscillations with generalized gamma distributed parameters. By composing the pseudo-process $X_n$ related to the higher-order heat-type equation with positively skewed stable r.v.'s $T^j_{1/3}$, $j=1,2, ..., n$ we obtain genuine r.v.'s whose explicit distribution is given for $n=3$ in terms of Cauchy asymmetric laws. We also prove that $X_3(T^1_{1/3}(...(T^n_{(1/3)}(t))...))$ has a stable asymmetric law.

Reflecting diffusions and hyperbolic Brownian motions in multidimensional spheres

Diffusion processes $(\underline{\bf X}_d(t))_{t\geq 0}$ moving inside spheres $S_R^d \subset\mathbb{R}^d$ and reflecting orthogonally on their surfaces $\partial S_R^d$ are considered. The stochastic differential equations governing the reflecting diffusions are presented and their kernels and distributions explicitly derived. Reflection is obtained by means of the inversion with respect to the sphere $S_R^d$. The particular cases of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and Brownian motion are examined in detail. The hyperbolic Brownian motion on the Poincarè half-space $\mathbb{H}_d$ is examined in the last part of the paper and its reflecting counterpart within hyperbolic spheres is studied. Finally a section is devoted to reflecting hyperbolic Brownian motion in the Poincarè disc $D$ within spheres concentric with $D$.

Angular processes related to Cauchy random walks

We study the angular process related to random walks in the Euclidean and in the non-Euclidean space where steps are Cauchy distributed. This leads to different types of non-linear transformations of Cauchy random variables which preserve the Cauchy density. We give the explicit form of these distributions for all combinations of the scale and the location parameters. Continued fractions involving Cauchy random variables are analyzed. It is shown that the $n$-stage random variables are still Cauchy distributed with parameters related to Fibonacci numbers. This permits us to show the convergence in distribution of the sequence to the golden ratio.

Cascades of Particles Moving at Finite Velocity in Hyperbolic Spaces

A branching process of particles moving at finite velocity over the geodesic lines of the hyperbolic space (Poincaré half-plane and Poincaré disk) is examined. Each particle can split into two particles only once at Poisson paced times and deviates orthogonally when splitted. At time $t$, after $N(t)$ Poisson events, there are $N(t)+1$ particles moving along different geodesic lines. We are able to obtain the exact expression of the mean hyperbolic distance of the center of mass of the cloud of particles. We derive such mean hyperbolic distance from two different and independent ways and we study the behavior of the relevant expression as $t$ increases and for different values of the parameters $c$ (hyperbolic velocity of motion) and $λ$ (rate of reproduction). The mean hyperbolic distance of each moving particle is also examined and a useful representation, as the distance of a randomly stopped particle moving over the main geodesic line, is presented.

Compositions, Random Sums and Continued Random Fractions of Poisson and Fractional Poisson Processes

In this paper we consider the relation between random sums and compositions of different processes. In particular, for independent Poisson processes $N_α(t)$, $N_β(t)$, $t>0$, we show that $N_α(N_β(t)) \overset{\text{d}}{=} \sum_{j=1}^{N_β(t)} X_j$, where the $X_j$s are Poisson random variables. We present a series of similar cases, the most general of which is the one in which the outer process is Poisson and the inner one is a nonlinear fractional birth process. We highlight generalisations of these results where the external process is infinitely divisible. A section of the paper concerns compositions of the form $N_α(τ_k^ν)$, $ν\in (0,1]$, where $τ_k^ν$ is the inverse of the fractional Poisson process, and we show how these compositions can be represented as random sums. Furthermore we study compositions of the form $Θ(N(t))$, $t>0$, which can be represented as random products. The last section is devoted to studying continued fractions of Cauchy random variables with a Poisson number of levels. We evaluate the exact distribution and derive the scale parameter in terms of ratios of Fibonacci numbers.

Flying randomly in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with Dirichlet displacements

Random flights in $\mathbb{R}^d,d\geq 2,$ with Dirichlet-distributed displacements and uniformly distributed orientation are analyzed. The explicit characteristic functions of the position $\underline{\bf X}_d(t),\,t>0,$ when the number of changes of direction is fixed are obtained. The probability distributions are derived by inverting the characteristic functions for all dimensions $d$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$ and many properties of the probabilistic structure of $\underline{\bf X}_d(t),t>0,$ are examined. If the number of changes of direction is randomized by means of a fractional Poisson process, we are able to obtain explicit distributions for $P\{\underline{\bf X}_d(t)\in d\underline{\bf x}_d\}$ for all $d\geq 2$. A Section is devoted to random flights in $\mathbb{R}^3$ where the general results are discussed. The existing literature is compared with the results of this paper where in our view the classical Pearson's problem of random flights is resolved by suitably randomizing the step lengths. The random flights where changes of direction are governed by a homogeneous Poisson process are analyzed and compared with the model of Dirichlet-distributed displacements of this work.

Fractional diffusion equations and processes with randomly varying time

In this paper the solutions $u_ν=u_ν(x,t)$ to fractional diffusion equations of order $0<ν\leq 2$ are analyzed and interpreted as densities of the composition of various types of stochastic processes. For the fractional equations of order $ν=\frac{1}{2^n}$, $n\geq 1,$ we show that the solutions $u_{1/2^n}$ correspond to the distribution of the $n$-times iterated Brownian motion. For these processes the distributions of the maximum and of the sojourn time are explicitly given. The case of fractional equations of order $ν=\frac{2}{3^n}$, $n\geq 1,$ is also investigated and related to Brownian motion and processes with densities expressed in terms of Airy functions. In the general case we show that $u_ν$ coincides with the distribution of Brownian motion with random time or of different processes with a Brownian time. The interplay between the solutions $u_ν$ and stable distributions is also explored. Interesting cases involving the bilateral exponential distribution are obtained in the limit.

Fractional pure birth processes

We consider a fractional version of the classical nonlinear birth process of which the Yule--Furry model is a particular case. Fractionality is obtained by replacing the first order time derivative in the difference-differential equations which govern the probability law of the process with the Dzherbashyan--Caputo fractional derivative. We derive the probability distribution of the number $\mathcal{N}_ν(t)$ of individuals at an arbitrary time $t$. We also present an interesting representation for the number of individuals at time $t$, in the form of the subordination relation $\mathcal{N}_ν(t)=\mathcal{N}(T_{2ν}(t))$, where $\mathcal{N}(t)$ is the classical generalized birth process and $T_{2ν}(t)$ is a random time whose distribution is related to the fractional diffusion equation. The fractional linear birth process is examined in detail in Section 3 and various forms of its distribution are given and discussed.

On a fractional linear birth--death process

In this paper, we introduce and examine a fractional linear birth--death process $N_ν(t)$, $t>0$, whose fractionality is obtained by replacing the time derivative with a fractional derivative in the system of difference-differential equations governing the state probabilities $p_k^ν(t)$, $t>0$, $k\geq0$. We present a subordination relationship connecting $N_ν(t)$, $t>0$, with the classical birth--death process $N(t)$, $t>0$, by means of the time process $T_{2ν}(t)$, $t>0$, whose distribution is related to a time-fractional diffusion equation. We obtain explicit formulas for the extinction probability $p_0^ν(t)$ and the state probabilities $p_k^ν(t)$, $t>0$, $k\geq1$, in the three relevant cases $λ>μ$, $λ<μ$, $λ=μ$ (where $λ$ and $μ$ are, respectively, the birth and death rates) and discuss their behaviour in specific situations. We highlight the connection of the fractional linear birth--death process with the fractional pure birth process. Finally, the mean values $\mathbb{E}N_ν(t)$ and $\operatorname {\mathbb{V}ar}N_ν(t)$ are derived and analyzed.

Randomly Stopped Nonlinear Fractional Birth Processes

We present and analyse the nonlinear classical pure birth process $\mathpzc{N} (t)$, $t>0$, and the fractional pure birth process $\mathpzc{N}^ν(t)$, $t>0$, subordinated to various random times, namely the first-passage time $T_t$ of the standard Brownian motion $B(t)$, $t>0$, the $α$-stable subordinator $\mathpzc{S}^α(t)$, $α\in (0,1)$, and others. For all of them we derive the state probability distribution $\hat{p}_k (t)$, $k \geq 1$ and, in some cases, we also present the corresponding governing differential equation. We also highlight interesting interpretations for both the subordinated classical birth process $\hat{\mathpzc{N}} (t)$, $t>0$, and its fractional counterpart $\hat{\mathpzc{N}}^ν(t)$, $t>0$ in terms of classical birth processes with random rates evaluated on a stretched or squashed time scale. Various types of compositions of the fractional pure birth process $\mathpzc{N}^ν(t)$ have been examined in the last part of the paper. In particular, the processes $\mathpzc{N}^ν(T_t)$, $\mathpzc{N}^ν(\mathpzc{S}^α(t))$, $\mathpzc{N}^ν(T_{2ν}(t))$, have been analysed, where $T_{2ν}(t)$, $t>0$, is a process related to fractional diffusion equations. Also the related process $\mathpzc{N}(\mathpzc{S}^α({T_{2ν}(t)}))$ is investigated and compared with $\mathpzc{N}(T_{2ν}(\mathpzc{S}^α(t))) = \mathpzc{N}^ν(\mathpzc{S}^α(t))$. As a byproduct of our analysis, some formulae relating Mittag--Leffler functions are obtained.

The Space-Fractional Poisson Process

In this paper we introduce the space-fractional Poisson process whose state probabilities $p_k^α(t)$, $t>0$, $α\in (0,1]$, are governed by the equations $(\mathrm d/\mathrm dt)p_k(t) = -λ^α(1-B)p_k^α(t)$, where $(1-B)^α$ is the fractional difference operator found in the study of time series analysis. We explicitly obtain the distributions $p_k^α(t)$, the probability generating functions $G_α(u,t)$, which are also expressed as distributions of the minimum of i.i.d.\ uniform random variables. The comparison with the time-fractional Poisson process is investigated and finally, we arrive at the more general space-time fractional Poisson process of which we give the explicit distribution.

Travelling Randomly on the Poincaré Half-Plane with a Pythagorean Compass

A random motion on the Poincaré half-plane is studied. A particle runs on the geodesic lines changing direction at Poisson-paced times. The hyperbolic distance is analyzed, also in the case where returns to the starting point are admitted. The main results concern the mean hyperbolic distance (and also the conditional mean distance) in all versions of the motion envisaged. Also an analogous motion on orthogonal circles of the sphere is examined and the evolution of the mean distance from the starting point is investigated.

Equations of Mathematical Physics and Compositions of Brownian and Cauchy processes

We consider different types of processes obtained by composing Brownian motion $B(t)$, fractional Brownian motion $B_{H}(t)$ and Cauchy processes $% C(t)$ in different manners. We study also multidimensional iterated processes in $\mathbb{R}^{d},$ like, for example, $\left( B_{1}(|C(t)|),...,B_{d}(|C(t)|)\right) $ and $\left( C_{1}(|C(t)|),...,C_{d}(|C(t)|)\right) ,$ deriving the corresponding partial differential equations satisfied by their joint distribution. We show that many important partial differential equations, like wave equation, equation of vibration of rods, higher-order heat equation, are satisfied by the laws of the iterated processes considered in the work. Similarly we prove that some processes like $% C(|B_{1}(|B_{2}(...|B_{n+1}(t)|...)|)|)$ are governed by fractional diffusion equations.
