A fractional approach to study the pure-temporal Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) process for earthquakes modeling

In statistical seismology, the Epidemic Type Aftershocks Sequence (ETAS) model is a branching process used world-wide to forecast earthquake intensity rates and reproduce many statistical features observed in seismicity catalogs. In this paper, we describe a fractional differential equation that governs the earthquake intensity rate of the pure temporal ETAS model by using the Caputo fractional derivative and we solve it analytically. We highlight that the tools and special functions of fractional calculus simplify the classical methods employed to obtain the intensity rate and let us describe the change of solution decay for large times. We also apply and discuss the theoretical results to the Japanese catalog in the period 1965-2003.

A note on a modified fractional Maxwell model

In this paper we consider a modified fractional Maxwell model based on the application of Hadamard-type fractional derivatives. The model is physically motivated by the fact that we can take into account at the same time memory effects and the time-dependence of the viscosity coefficient. We obtain an ultra-slow relaxation response whose explicit analytic form is given by the Mittag-Leffler function with a logarithmic argument. We show graphically the main properties of this relaxation response, also with the asymptotic behaviour.

On the application of Mittag-Leffler functions to hyperbolic-type decay of luminescence

In 1861, Becquerel analyzed the time-resolved luminescence and formulated an empirical hyperbolic-type decay function, which was later named Becquerel decay law. Since then, studies about hyperbolic decays of luminescence have been carried on in different physical contexts. In this paper we generalize the Becquerel decay law by using a Mittag-Leffler function with a logarithmic argument, and discuss its physical interpretation in light of recently published results.

A practical guide to Prabhakar fractional calculus

The Mittag-Leffler function is universally acclaimed as the Queen function of fractional calculus. The aim of this work is to survey the key results and applications emerging from the three-parameter generalization of this function, known as the Prabhakar function. Specifically, after reviewing key historical events that led to the discovery and modern development of this peculiar function, we discuss how the latter allows one to introduce an enhanced scheme for fractional calculus. Then, we summarize the progress in the application of this new general framework to physics and renewal processes. We also provide a collection of results on the numerical evaluation of the Prabhakar function.

Alternative probabilistic representations of Barenblatt-type solutions

A general class of probability density functions \[u(x,t)=Ct^{-αd}\left (1-\left (\frac{\|x\|}{ct^α}\right )^β\right )_+^γ,\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^d,t>0,\] is considered, containing as particular case the Barenblatt solutions arising, for instance, in the study of nonlinear heat equations. Alternative probabilistic representations of the Barenblatt-type solutions $u(x,t)$ are proposed. In the one-dimensional case, by means of this approach, $u(x,t)$ can be connected with the wave propagation.

Probability distributions for the run-and-tumble models with variable speed and tumbling rate

In this paper we consider a telegraph equation with time-dependent coefficients, governing the persistent random walk of a particle moving on the line with a time-varying velocity $c(t)$ and changing direction at instants distributed according to a non-stationary Poisson distribution with rate $λ(t)$. We show that, under suitable assumptions, we are able to find the exact form of the probability distribution. We also consider the space-fractional counterpart of this model, finding the characteristic function of the related process. A conclusive discussion is devoted to the potential applications to run-and-tumble models.

A note on Hadamard fractional differential equations with varying coefficients and their applications in probability

In this paper we show several connections between special functions arising from generalized COM-Poisson-type statistical distributions and integro-differential equations with varying coefficients involving Hadamard-type operators. New analytical results are obtained, showing the particular role of Hadamard-type derivatives in connection with a recently introduced generalization of the Le Roy function. We are also able to prove a general connection between fractional hyper-Bessel-type equations involving Hadamard operators and Le Roy functions.

Confinement of a hot temperature patch in the modified SQG model

In this paper we study the time evolution of a temperature patch in $R^2$ according to the modified Surface Quasi-Geostrophic Equation (SQG) patch equation. In particular we give a temporal estimate on the growth of the support, providing a rigorous proof of the confinement of a hot patch of temperature in absence of external forcing, under the quasi-geostrophic approximation.

Fractional diffusions with time-varying coefficients

This paper is concerned with the fractionalized diffusion equations governing the law of the fractional Brownian motion $B_H(t)$. We obtain solutions of these equations which are probability laws extending that of $B_H(t)$. Our analysis is based on McBride fractional operators generalizing the hyper-Bessel operators $L$ and converting their fractional power $L^α$ into Erdélyi--Kober fractional integrals. We study also probabilistic properties of the r.v.'s whose distributions satisfy space-time fractional equations involving Caputo and Riesz fractional derivatives. Some results emerging from the analysis of fractional equations with time-varying coefficients have the form of distributions of time-changed r.v.'s.

Correlated fractional counting processes on a finite time interval

We present some correlated fractional counting processes on a finite time interval. This will be done by considering a slight generalization of the processes in Borges et al. (2012). The main case concerns a class of space-time fractional Poisson processes and, when the correlation parameter is equal to zero, the univariate distributions coincide with the ones of the space-time fractional Poisson process in Orsingher and Polito (2012). On the other hand, when we consider the time fractional Poisson process, the multivariate finite dimensional distributions are different from the ones presented for the renewal process in Politi et al. (2011). Another case concerns a class of fractional negative binomial processes.

Fractional Klein-Gordon equation for linear dispersive phenomena: analytical methods and applications

In this paper we discuss some exact results related to the fractional Klein--Gordon equation involving fractional powers of the D'Alembert operator. By means of a space-time transformation, we reduce the fractional Klein--Gordon equation to a fractional hyper-Bessel-type equation. We find an exact analytic solution by using the McBride theory of fractional powers of hyper-Bessel operators. A discussion of these results within the framework of linear dispersive wave equations is provided. We also present exact solutions of the fractional Klein-Gordon equation in the higher dimensional cases. Finally, we suggest a method of finding travelling wave solutions of the nonlinear fractional Klein-Gordon equation with power law nonlinearities.

Fractional Klein-Gordon equations and related stochastic processes

This paper presents finite-velocity random motions driven by fractional Klein-Gordon equations of order $α\in (0,1]$. A key tool in the analysis is played by the McBride's theory which converts fractional hyper-Bessel operators into Erdelyi-Kober integral operators. Special attention is payed to the fractional telegraph process whose space-dependent distribution solves a non-homogeneous fractional Klein-Gordon equation. The distribution of the fractional telegraph process for $α= 1$ coincides with that of the classical telegraph process and its driving equation converts into the homogeneous Klein-Gordon equation. Fractional planar random motions at finite velocity are also investigated, the corresponding distributions obtained as well as the explicit form of the governing equations. Fractionality is reflected into the underlying random motion because in each time interval a binomial number of deviations $B(n,α)$ (with uniformly-distributed orientation) are considered. The parameter $n$ of $B(n,α)$ is itself a random variable with fractional Poisson distribution, so that fractionality acts as a subsampling of the changes of directions. Finally the behaviour of each coordinate of the planar motion is examined and the corresponding densities obtained. Extensions to $N$-dimensional fractional random flights are envisaged as well as the fractional counterpart of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation to which our theory applies.

Hilfer-Prabhakar Derivatives and Some Applications

We present a generalization of Hilfer derivatives in which Riemann--Liouville integrals are replaced by more general Prabhakar integrals. We analyze and discuss its properties. Further, we show some applications of these generalized Hilfer-Prabhakar derivatives in classical equations of mathematical physics, like the heat and the free electron laser equations, and in difference-differential equations governing the dynamics of generalized renewal stochastic processes.

State-dependent Fractional Point Processes

The aim of this paper is the analysis of the fractional Poisson process where the state probabilities $p_k^{ν_k}(t)$, $t\ge 0$, are governed by time-fractional equations of order $0<ν_k\leq 1$ depending on the number $k$ of events occurred up to time $t$. We are able to obtain explicitely the Laplace transform of $p_k^{ν_k}(t)$ and various representations of state probabilities. We show that the Poisson process with intermediate waiting times depending on $ν_k$ differs from that constructed from the fractional state equations (in the case $ν_k = ν$, for all $k$, they coincide with the time-fractional Poisson process). We also introduce a different form of fractional state-dependent Poisson process as a weighted sum of homogeneous Poisson processes. Finally we consider the fractional birth process governed by equations with state-dependent fractionality.

Coupled systems of fractional equations related to sound propagation: analysis and discussion

In this note we analyse the propagation of a small density perturbation in a one-dimensional compressible fluid by means of fractional calculus modelling, replacing thus the ordinary time derivative with the Caputo fractional derivative in the constitutive equations. By doing so, we embrace a vast phenomenology, including subdiffusive, superdiffusive and also memoryless processes like classical diffusions. From a mathematical point of view, we study systems of coupled fractional equations, leading to fractional diffusion equations or to equations with sequential fractional derivatives. In this framework we also propose a method to solve partial differential equations with sequential fractional derivatives by analysing the corresponding coupled system of equations.

On Some Operators Involving Hadamard Derivatives

In this paper we introduce a novel Mittag--Leffler-type function and study its properties in relation to some integro-differential operators involving Hadamard fractional derivatives or Hyper-Bessel-type operators. We discuss then the utility of these results to solve some integro-differential equations involving these operators by means of operational methods. We show the advantage of our approach through some examples. Among these, an application to a modified Lamb--Bateman integral equation is presented.

A note on fractional linear pure birth and pure death processes in epidemic models

In this note we highlight the role of fractional linear birth and linear death processes recently studied in \citet{sakhno} and \citet{pol}, in relation to epidemic models with empirical power law distribution of the events. Taking inspiration from a formal analogy between the equation of self consistency of the epidemic type aftershock sequences (ETAS) model, and the fractional differential equation describing the mean value of fractional linear growth processes, we show some interesting applications of fractional modelling to study \textit{ab initio} epidemic processes without the assumption of any empirical distribution. We also show that, in the frame of fractional modelling, subcritical regimes can be linked to linear fractional death processes and supercritical regimes to linear fractional birth processes. Moreover we discuss a simple toy model to underline the possible application of these stochastic growth models to more general epidemic phenomena such as tumoral growth.
