Controlled surgery and $\mathbb{L}$-homology

This paper presents an alternative approach to controlled surgery obstructions. The obstruction for a degree one normal map $(f,b): M^n \rightarrow X^n$ with control map $q: X^n \rightarrow B$ to complete controlled surgery is an element $σ^c (f, b) \in H_n (B, \mathbb{L})$, where $M^n, X^n$ are topological manifolds of dimension $n \geq 5$. Our proof uses essentially the geometrically defined $\mathbb{L}$-spectrum as described by Nicas (going back to Quinn) and some well known homotopy theory. We also outline the construction of the algebraically defined obstruction, and we explicitly describe the assembly map $H_n (B, \mathbb{L}) \rightarrow L_n (π_1 (B))$ in terms of forms in the case $n \equiv 0 (4)$. Finally, we explicitly determine the canonical map $H_n (B, \mathbb{L}) \rightarrow H_n (B, L_0)$.

On Steenrod $\mathbb{L}$-homology, generalized manifolds, and surgery

The aim of this paper is to show the importance of the Steenrod construction of homology theories for the disassembly process in surgery on a generalized $n$-manifold $X^n$, in order to produce an element of generalized homology theory, which is basic for calculations. In particular, we show how to construct an element of the $n$-th Steenrod homology group $H^{st}_{n} (X^{n}, \mathbb{L}^+),$ where $\mathbb{L}^+$ is the connected covering spectrum of the periodic surgery spectrum $\mathbb{L}$, avoiding the use of the geometric splitting procedure, which is standardly used in surgery on topological manifolds.

A Nash type solution for hemivariational inequality systems

In this paper we prove an existence result for a general class of hemivariational inequalities systems using the Ky Fan version of KKM theorem (1984) or the Tarafdar fixed point theorem (1987). As application we give an infinite dimensional version for existence result of Nash generalized derivative points introduced recently by Kristály (2010) and also we give an application to a general hemivariational inequalities system.

Asymptotics for singular solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations with absorption term

We are concerned with the asymptotic analysis of positive blow-up boundary solutions for a class of quasilinear elliptic equations with absorption term. By means of the Karamata theory we establish the first two terms in the expansion of the singular solution near the boundary. Our analysis includes large classes of nonlinearities of Keller-Osserman type.

Existence of solutions for $p$-Laplacian discrete equations

This work is devoted to the study of the existence of at least one (non-zero) solution to a problem involving the discrete $p$-Laplacian. As a special case, we derive an existence theorem for a second-order discrete problem, depending on a positive real parameter $α$, whose prototype is given by $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{l} -Δ^2u({k-1})=αf(k,u(k)),\quad \forall\; k \in {\mathbb{Z}}[1,T] \\ {u(0)=u({T+1})=0.}\\ \end{array} \right. $$ Our approach is based on variational methods in finite-dimensional setting.

Group gradings on finite dimensional Lie algebras

We study gradings by noncommutative groups on finite dimensional Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. It is shown that if $L$ is gradeg by a non-abelian finite group $G$ then the solvable radical $R$ of $L$ is $G$-graded and there exists a Levi subalgebra $B=H_1\oplus\cdots\oplus H_m$ homogeneous in $G$-grading with graded simple summands $H_1, \ldots, H_m$. All supports $Supp~H_i, i=1\ldots, m$, are commutative subsets of $G$.

Higher nonlocal problems with bounded potential

The aim of this paper is to study a class of nonlocal fractional Laplacian equations depending on two real parameters. More precisely, by using an appropriate analytical context on fractional Sobolev spaces due to Servadei and Valdinoci, we establish the existence of three weak solutions for nonlocal fractional problems exploiting an abstract critical point result for smooth functionals. We emphasize that the dependence of the underlying equation from one of the real parameter is not necessarily of affine type.

Metric projections versus non-positive curvature

In this paper two metric properties on geodesic length spaces are introduced by means of the metric projection, studying their validity on Alexandrov and Busemann NPC spaces. In particular, we prove that both properties characterize the non-positivity of the sectional curvature on Riemannian manifolds. Further results are also established on reversible/non-reversible Finsler-Minkowski spaces.

Multiple perturbations of a singular eigenvalue problem

We study the perturbation by a critical term and a $(p-1)$-superlinear subcritical nonlinearity of a quasilinear elliptic equation containing a singular potential. By means of variational arguments and a version of the concentration-compactness principle in the singular case, we prove the existence of solutions for positive values of the parameter under the principal eigenvalue of the associated singular eigenvalue problem.

Multiple solutions for a Neumann system involving subquadratic nonlinearities

In this paper we consider the model semilinear Neumann system $$\left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -Δu+a(x)u=λc(x) F_u(u,v)& {\rm in} & Ω,\\ -Δv+b(x)v=λc(x) F_v(u,v)& {\rm in} & Ω,\\ \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}=\frac{\partial v}{\partial ν}=0 & {\rm on} & \partialΩ, \end{array}\right.$$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N$ is a smooth open bounded domain, $ν$ denotes the outward unit normal to $\partial Ω$, $λ\geq 0$ is a parameter, $a,b,c\in L_+^\infty(Ω)\setminus\{0\},$ and $F\in C^1(\mathbb{R}^2,\mathbb{R})\setminus\{0\}$ is a nonnegative function which is subquadratic at infinity. Two nearby numbers are determined in explicit forms, $\underline λ$ and $\overline λ$ with $ 0<\underlineλ\leq \overline λ$, such that for every $0\leq λ<\underline λ$, system $(N_λ)$ has only the trivial pair of solution, while for every $λ>\overline λ$, system $(N_λ)$ has at least two distinct nonzero pairs of solutions.

Multiple solutions for elliptic equations involving a general operator in divergence form

In this paper, exploiting variational methods, the existence of three weak solutions for a class of elliptic equations involving a general operator in divergence form and with Dirichlet boundary condition is investigated. Several special cases are analyzed. In conclusion, for completeness, a concrete example of an application is presented by finding the existence of three nontrivial weak solutions for an uniformly elliptic second-order problem on a bounded Euclidean domain.

Nonlinear mappings preserving at least one eigenvalue

We prove that if $F$ is a Lipschitz map from the set of all complex $n\times n$ matrices into itself with $F(0)=0$ such that given any $x$ and $y$ we have that $% F\left( x\right) -F\left( y\right) $ and $x-y$ have at least one common eigenvalue, then either $F\left( x\right) =uxu^{-1}$ or $F\left( x\right) =ux^{t}u^{-1}$ for all $x$, for some invertible $n\times n$ matrix $u$. We arrive at the same conclusion by supposing $F$ to be of class $\mathcal{C}% ^{1}$ on a domain in $\mathcal{M}_{n}$ containing the null matrix, instead of Lipschitz. We also prove that if $F$ is of class $\mathcal{C}^{1}$ on a domain containing the null matrix satisfying $F(0)=0$ and $ρ(F\left( x\right) -F\left( y\right) )=ρ(x-y)$ for all $x$ and $y$, where $ρ\left( \cdot \right) $ denotes the spectral radius, then there exists $γ\in \mathbb{C}$ of modulus one such that either $γ^{-1}F$ or $γ^{-1}\overline{F}$ is of the above form, where $\overline{F}$ is the (complex) conjugate of $F$.

Nonlinear Neumann problems driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator

We study a nonlinear parametric Neumann problem driven by a nonhomogeneous quasilinear elliptic differential operator $\operatorname{div}(a(x,\nabla u))$, a special case of which is the $p$-Laplacian. The reaction term is a nonlinearity function $f$ which exhibits $(p-1)$-subcritical growth. By using variational methods, we prove a multiplicity result on the existence of weak solutions for such problems. An explicit example of an application is also presented.

On a $p(\cdot)$-biharmonic problem with no-flux boundary condition

The study of fourth order partial differential equations has flourished in the last years, however, a $p(\cdot)$-biharmonic problem with no-flux boundary condition has never been considered before, not even for constant $p$. This is an important step further, since surfaces that are impermeable to some contaminants are appearing quite often in nature, hence the significance of such boundary condition. By relying on several variational arguments, we obtain the existence and the multiplicity of weak solutions to our problem. We point out that, although we use a mountain pass type theorem in order to establish the multiplicity result, we do not impose an Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type condition, nor a symmetry condition, on our nonlinearity $f$.

On a non-homogeneous eigenvalue problem involving a potential: an Orlicz-Sobolev space setting

In this paper we study a non-homogeneous eigenvalue problem involving variable growth conditions and a potential $V$. The problem is analyzed in the context of Orlicz-Sobolev spaces. Connected with this problem we also study the optimization problem for the particular eigenvalue given by the infimum of the Rayleigh quotient associated to the problem with respect to the potential $V$ when $V$ lies in a bounded, closed and convex subset of a certain variable exponent Lebesgue space.

On a PDE involving the ${\cal A}_{p(\cdot)}$-Laplace operator

This paper establishes existence of solutions for a partial differential equation in which a differential operator involving variable exponent growth conditions is present. This operator represents a generalization of the $p(\cdot)$-Laplace operator, i.e. $Δ_{p(\cdot)}u={\rm div}(|\nabla u|^{p(\cdot)-2}\nabla u)$, where $p(\cdot)$ is a continuous function. The proof of the main result is based on Schauder's fixed point theorem combined with adequate variational arguments. The function space setting used here makes appeal to the variable exponent Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces.

On doubly nonlocal fractional elliptic equations

This work is devoted to the study of the existence of solutions to nonlocal equations involving the fractional Laplacian. These equations have a variational structure and we find a nontrivial solution for them using the Mountain Pass Theorem. To make the nonlinear methods work, some careful analysis of the fractional spaces involved is necessary. In addition, we require rather general assumptions on the local operator. As far as we know, this result is new and represent a fractional version of a classical theorem obtained working with Laplacian equations.

On sequences of solutions for discrete anisotropic equations

Taking advantage of a recent critical point theorem, the existence of infinitely many solutions for an anisotropic problem with a parameter is established. More precisely, a concrete interval of positive parameters, for which the treated problem admits infinitely many solutions, is determined without symmetry assumptions on the nonlinear data. Our goal was achieved by requiring an appropriate behavior of the nonlinear terms at zero, without any additional conditions.

On the codimension growth of simple color Lie superalgebras

We study polynomial identities of finite dimensional simple color Lie superalgebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero graded by the product of two cyclic groups of order $2$. We prove that the codimensions of identities grow exponentially and the rate of exponent equals the dimension of the algebra. A similar result is also obtained for graded identities and graded codimensions.

On the existence of three solutions for the Dirichlet problem on the Sierpinski gasket

We apply a recently obtained three critical points theorem of B. Ricceri to prove the existence of at least three solutions of certain two-parameters Dirichlet problems defined on the Sierpinski gasket. We also show the existence of at least three nonzero solutions of certain perturbed two-parameters Dirichlet problems on the Sierpinski gasket, using both the mountain pass theorem of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz and that of Pucci-Serrin.

Quantitative Rellich Inequalities on Finsler-Hadamard Manifolds

In this paper we are dealing with quantitative Rellich inequalities on Finsler-Hadamard manifolds where the remainder terms are expressed by means of the flag curvature. By exploring various arguments from Finsler geometry and PDEs on manifolds we show that more weighty curvature implies more powerful improvements in Rellich inequalities. The sharpness of the involved constants are also studied. Our results complement those of Yang, Su and Kong [Commun. Contemp. Math., 2014].

We study the semigroup $\mathscr{I}^{\mathrm{cf}}_λ$ of injective partial cofinite selfmaps of an infinite cardinal $λ$. We show that $\mathscr{I}^{\mathrm{cf}}_λ$ is a bisimple inverse semigroup and each chain of idempotents in $\mathscr{I}^{\mathrm{cf}}_λ$ is contained in a bicyclic subsemigroup of $\mathscr{I}^{\mathrm{cf}}_λ$, we describe the Green relations on $\mathscr{I}^{\mathrm{cf}}_λ$ and we prove that every non-trivial congruence on $\mathscr{I}^{\mathrm{cf}}_λ$ is a group congruence. Continuous selections of multivalued mappings

This survey covers in our opinion the most important results in the theory of continuous selections of multivalued mappings (approximately) from 2002 through 2012. It extends and continues our previous such survey which appeared in Recent Progress in General Topology, II, which was published in 2002. In comparison, our present survey considers more restricted and specific areas of mathematics. Note that we do not consider the theory of selectors (i.e. continuous choices of elements from subsets of topological spaces) since this topics is covered by another survey in this volume.

On minimal Poincaré $4$-complexes

We consider two types of minimal Poincaré $4$-complexes. One is defined with respect to the degree $1$-map order. This idea was already present in our previous papers, and more systematically studied later by Hillman. The second type of minimal Poincaré $4$-complexes were introduced by Hambleton, Kreck and Teichner. It is not based on an order relation. In the present paper we study existence and uniqueness.

Simply connected open 3-manifolds with rigid genus one ends

We construct uncountably many simply connected open 3-manifolds with genus one ends homeomorphic to the Cantor set. Each constructed manifold has the property that any self homeomorphism of the manifold (which necessarily extends to a homeomorphism of the ends) fixes the ends pointwise. These manifolds are complements of rigid generalized Bing-Whitehead (BW) Cantor sets. Previous examples of rigid Cantor sets with simply connected complement in $R^{3}$ had infinite genus and it was an open question as to whether finite genus examples existed. The examples here exhibit the minimum possible genus, genus one. These rigid generalized BW Cantor sets are constructed using variable numbers of Bing and Whitehead links. Our previous result with Željko determining when BW Cantor sets are equivalently embedded in $R^{3}$ extends to the generalized construction. This characterization is used to prove rigidity and to distinguish the uncountably many examples.

Browder-Livesay filtrations and the example of Cappell and Shaneson

Let $M^3$ be a 3-dimensional manifold with fundamental group $π_1(M)$ which contains a quaternion subgroup $Q$ of order 8. In 1979 Cappell and Shaneson constructed a nontrivial normal map $ f\colon M^3\times T^2\to M^3\times S^2$ which cannot be detected by simply connected surgery obstructions along submanifolds of codimension 0, 1, or 2, but it can be detected by the codimension 3 Kervaire-Arf invariant. The proof of non-triviality of $σ(f)\in L_5(π_1(M))$ is based on consideration of a Browder-Livesay filtration of a manifold $X$ with $π_1(X)\cong π_1(M)$. For a Browder-Livesay pair $Y^{n-1}\subset X^n$, the restriction of a normal map to the submanifold $Y$ is given by a partial multivalued map $Γ\colon L_n(π_1(X))\to L_{n-1}(π_1(Y))$, and the Browder-Livesay filtration provides an iteration $Γ^n$. This map is a basic step in the definition of the iterated Browder-Livesay invariants which give obstructions to realization of surgery obstructions by normal maps of closed manifolds. In the present paper we prove that $Γ^3(σ(f))=0$ for any Browder-Livesay filtration of a manifold $X^{4k+1}$ with $π_1(X)\cong Q$. We compute splitting obstruction groups for various inclusions $ρ\to Q$ of index 2, describe natural maps in the braids of exact sequences, and make more precise several results about surgery obstruction groups of the group $Q$.

Detecting codimension one manifold factors with the piecewise disjoint arc-disk property and related properties

We show that all finite-dimensional resolvable generalized manifolds with the piecewise disjoint arc-disk property are codimension one manifold factors. We then show how the piecewise disjoint arc-disk property and other general position properties that detect codimension one manifold factors are related. We also note that in every example presently known to the authors of a codimension one manifold factor of dimension $n\geq 4$ determined by general position properties, the piecewise disjoint arc-disk property is satisfied.

Homogeneity Groups of Ends of 3-manifolds

For every finitely generated abelian group G, we construct an irreducible open 3-manifold $M_{G}$ whose end set is homeomorphic to a Cantor set and with end homogeneity group of $M_{G}$ isomorphic to G. The end homogeneity group is the group of self-homeomorphisms of the end set that extend to homeomorphisms of the 3-manifold. The techniques involve computing the embedding homogeneity groups of carefully constructed Antoine type Cantor sets made up of rigid pieces. In addition, a generalization of an Antoine Cantor set using infinite chains is needed to construct an example with integer homogeneity group. Results about local genus of points in Cantor sets and about geometric index are also used.

Inequivalent Cantor Sets in $R^{3}$ Whose Complements Have the Same Fundamental Group

For each Cantor set C in $R^{3}$, all points of which have bounded local genus, we show that there are infinitely many inequivalent Cantor sets in $R^{3}$ with complement having the same fundamental group as the complement of C. This answers a question from Open Problems in Topology and has as an application a simple construction of nonhomeomorphic open 3-manifolds with the same fundamental group. The main techniques used are analysis of local genus of points of Cantor sets, a construction for producing rigid Cantor sets with simply connected complement, and manifold decomposition theory. The results presented give an argument that for certain groups G, there are uncountably many nonhomeomorphic open 3-manifolds with fundamental group G.

Max-min measures on ultrametric spaces

The ultrametrization of the set of all probability measures of compact support on the ultrametric spaces was first defined by Hartog and de Vink. In this paper we consider a similar construction for the so called max-min measures on the ultrametric spaces. In particular, we prove that the functors max-min measures and idempotent measures are isomorphic. However, we show that this is not the case for the monads generated by these functors.

On 2-dimensional nonaspherical cell-like Peano continua: A simplified approach

We construct a functor $AC(-,-)$ from the category of path connected spaces $X$ with a base point $x$ to the category of simply connected spaces. The following are the main results of the paper: (i) If $X$ is a Peano continuum then $AC(X,x)$ is a cell-like Peano continuum; (ii) If $X$ is $n-$dimensional then $AC(X, x)$ is $(n+1)-$dimensional; and (iii) For a path connected space $X$, $π_1(X,x)$ is trivial if and only if $π_2(AC(X, x))$ is trivial. As a corollary, $AC(S^1, x)$ is a 2-dimensional nonaspherical cell-like Peano continuum.

On the Pontryagin-Steenrod-Wu theorem

This paper is on homotopy classification of maps of (n+1)-dimensional manifolds into the n-dimensional sphere. For a continuous map f of an (n+1)-manifold into the n-sphere define the degree deg f to be the class dual to f^*[S^n], where [S^n] is the fundamental class. We present a short and direct proof of the following specific case of the Pontryagin-Steenrod-Wu theorem: Theorem. Let M be a connected orientable closed smooth (n+1)-manifold, n>2. Then the map deg:π^n(M)\to H_1(M;Z) is 1-to-1 (i.e., bijective), if the product w_2(M) x r_2 H_2(M;Z) is nonzero, where r_2 is the mod2 reduction; 2-to-1 (i.e., each element of H_1(M;Z) has exactly 2 preimages) - otherwise. The proof is based on the Pontryagin-Thom construction and a geometric definition of the Stiefel-Whitney classes w_2(M).

A two-parameter control for contractive-like multivalued mappings

We propose a general approach to defining a contractive-like multivalued mappings $F$ which avoids any use of the Hausdorff distance between the sets $F(x)$ and $F(y)$. Various fixed point theorems are proved under a two-parameter control of the distance function $d_{F}(x)=dist(x,F(x))$ between a point $x \in X$ and the value $F(x) ßX$. Here, both parameters are numerical functions. The first one $\a\,:[0,+ı)\rightarrow [1,+ı)$ controls the distance between $x$ and some appropriate point $y \in F(x)$ in comparison with $d_{F}(x)$, whereas the second one $\b\,:[0,+ı)\rightarrow [0,1)$ estimates $d_{F}(y)$ with respect to $d(x,y)$. It appears that the well harmonized relations between $\a$ and $\b$ are sufficient for the existence of fixed points of $F$. Our results generalize several known fixed-point theorems.

On monoids of monotone injective partial self-maps of integers with cofinite domains and images

We study the semigroup $\mathscr{I}^{\nearrow}_{\infty}(\mathbb{Z})$ of monotone injective partial selfmaps of the set of integers having cofinite domain and image. We show that $\mathscr{I}^{\nearrow}_{\infty}(\mathbb{Z})$ is bisimple and all of its non-trivial semigroup homomorphisms are either isomorphisms or group homomorphisms. We also prove that every Baire topology $τ$ on $\mathscr{I}^{\nearrow}_{\infty}(\mathbb{Z})$ such that $(\mathscr{I}^{\nearrow}_{\infty}(\mathbb{Z}),τ)$ is a Hausdorff semitopological semigroup is discrete and we construct a non-discrete Hausdorff inverse semigroup topology $τ_W$ on $\mathscr{I}^{\nearrow}_{\infty}(\mathbb{Z})$. We show that the discrete semigroup $\mathscr{I}^{\nearrow}_{\infty}(\mathbb{Z})$ cannot be embedded into some classes of compact-like topological semigroups and that its remainder under the closure in a topological semigroup $S$ is an ideal in $S$.

The Geometry and Fundamental Groups of Solenoid Complements

When a solenoid is embedded in three space, its complement is an open three manifold. We discuss the geometry and fundamental groups of such manifolds, and show that the complements of different solenoids (arising from different inverse limits) have different fundamental groups. Embeddings of the same solenoid can give different groups; in particular, the nicest embeddings are unknotted at each level, and give an Abelian fundamental group, while other embeddings have non-Abelian groups. We show using geometry that every solenoid has uncountably many embeddings with non-homeomorphic complements.

Characterizing compact Clifford semigroups that embed into convolution and functor-semigroups

We study algebraic and topological properties of the convolution semigroups of probability measures on a topological groups and show that a compact Clifford topological semigroup $S$ embeds into the convolution semigroup $P(G)$ over some topological group $G$ if and only if $S$ embeds into the semigroup $\exp(G)$ of compact subsets of $G$ if and only if $S$ is an inverse semigroup and has zero-dimensional maximal semilattice. We also show that such a Clifford semigroup $S$ embeds into the functor-semigroup $F(G)$ over a suitable compact topological group $G$ for each weakly normal monadic functor $F$ in the category of compacta such that $F(G)$ contains a $G$-invariant element (which is an analogue of the Haar measure on $G$).

Hurewicz sets of reals without perfect subsets

We show that even for subsets X of the real line which do not contain perfect sets, the Hurewicz property does not imply the property S1(Gamma,Gamma), asserting that for each countable family of open gamma-covers of X, there is a choice function whose image is a gamma-cover of X. This settles a problem of Just, Miller, Scheepers, and Szeptycki. Our main result also answers a question of Bartoszynski and Tsaban, and implies that for C_p(X), the conjunction of Sakai's strong countable fan tightness and the Reznichenko property does not imply Arhangelskii's property alpha_2.

On semilocally simply connected spaces

The purpose of this paper is: (i) to construct a space which is semilocally simply connected in the sense of Spanier even though its Spanier group is non-trivial; (ii) to propose a modification of the notion of a Spanier group so that via the modified Spanier group semilocal simple connectivity can be characterized; and (iii) to point out that with just a slightly modified definition of semilocal simple connectivity which is sometimes also used in literature, the classical Spanier group gives the correct characterization within the general class of path-connected topological spaces. While the condition "semilocally simply connected" plays a crucial role in classical covering theory, in generalized covering theory one needs to consider the condition "homotopically Hausdorff" instead. The paper also discusses which implications hold between all of the abovementioned conditions and, via the modified Spanier groups, it also unveils the weakest so far known algebraic characterization for the existence of generalized covering spaces as introduced by Fischer and Zastrow. For most of the implications, the paper also proves the non-reversibility by providing the corresponding examples. Some of them rely on spaces that are newly constructed in this paper.

The Bryant-Ferry-Mio-Weinberger construction of generalized manifolds

Following Bryant, Ferry, Mio and Weinberger we construct generalized manifolds as limits of controlled sequences p_i: X_i --> X_{i-1} : i = 1,2,... of controlled Poincaré spaces. The basic ingredient is the epsilon-delta-surgery sequence recently proved by Pedersen, Quinn and Ranicki. Since one has to apply it not only in cases when the target is a manifold, but a controlled Poincaré complex, we explain this issue very roughly. Specifically, it is applied in the inductive step to construct the desired controlled homotopy equivalence p_{i+1}: X_{i+1} --> X_i. Our main theorem requires a sufficiently controlled Poincaré structure on X_i (over X_{i-1}). Our construction shows that this can be achieved. In fact, the Poincaré structure of X_i depends upon a homotopy equivalence used to glue two manifold pieces together (the rest is surgery theory leaving unaltered the Poincaré structure). It follows from the epsilon-delta-surgery sequence (more precisely from the Wall realization part) that this homotopy equivalence is sufficiently well controlled. In the final section we give additional explanation why the limit space of the X_i's has no resolution.

Topological monoids of monotone injective partial selfmaps of $\mathbb{N}$ with cofinite domain and image

In this paper we study the semigroup $\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N})$ of partial cofinal monotone bijective transformations of the set of positive integers $\mathbb{N}$. We show that the semigroup $\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N})$ has algebraic properties similar to the bicyclic semigroup: it is bisimple and all of its non-trivial group homomorphisms are either isomorphisms or group homomorphisms. We also prove that every locally compact topology $τ$ on $\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N})$ such that $(\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N}),τ)$ is a topological inverse semigroup, is discrete. Finally, we describe the closure of $(\mathscr{I}_{\infty}^{\nearrow}(\mathbb{N}),τ)$ in a topological semigroup.

Two-sided bounds for the volume of right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra

For a compact right-angled polyhedron $R$ in $\mathbb H^3$ denote by $\operatorname{vol} (R)$ the volume and by $\operatorname{vert} (R)$ the number of vertices. Upper and lower bounds for $\operatorname{vol} (R)$ in terms of $\operatorname{vert} (R)$ were obtained in \cite{A09}. Constructing a 2-parameter family of polyhedra, we show that the asymptotic upper bound $5 v_3 / 8$, where $v_3$ is the volume of the ideal regular tetrahedron in $\mathbb H^3$, is a double limit point for ratios $\operatorname{vol} (R) / \operatorname{vert} (R)$. Moreover, we improve the lower bound in the case $\operatorname{vert} (R) \leqslant 56$.

On continuous choice of retractions onto nonconvex subsets

For a Banach space $B$ and for a class $\A$ of its bounded closed retracts, endowed with the Hausdorff metric, we prove that retractions on elements $A \in \A$ can be chosen to depend continuously on $A$, whenever nonconvexity of each $A \in \A$ is less than $\f{1}{2}$. The key geometric argument is that the set of all uniform retractions onto an $\a-$paraconvex set (in the spirit of E. Michael) is $\frac{\a}{1-\a}-$paraconvex subset in the space of continuous mappings of $B$ into itself. For a Hilbert space $H$ the estimate $\frac{\a}{1-\a}$ can be improved to $\frac{\a (1+\a^{2})}{1-\a^{2}}$ and the constant $\f{1}{2}$ can be reduced to the root of the equation $\a+ \a^{2}+a^{3}=1$.

On M-separability of countable spaces and function spaces

We study M-separability as well as some other combinatorial versions of separability. In particular, we show that the set-theoretic hypothesis b=d implies that the class of selectively separable spaces is not closed under finite products, even for the spaces of continuous functions with the topology of pointwise convergence. We also show that there exists no maximal M-separable countable space in the model of Frankiewicz, Shelah, and Zbierski in which all closed P-subspaces of w^* admit an uncountable family of nonempty open mutually disjoint subsets. This answers several questions of Bella, Bonanzinga, Matveev, and Tkachuk.

On the length of chains of proper subgroups covering a topological group

We prove that if an ultrafilter L is not coherent to a Q-point, then each analytic non-sigma-bounded topological group G admits an increasing chain <G_a : a < b(L)> of its proper subgroups such that: (i) U_{a in b(L)} G_a=G; and $(ii)$ For every sigma-bounded subgroup H of G there exists a such that H is a subset of G_a. In case of the group Sym(w) of all permutations of w with the topology inherited from w^w this improves upon earlier results of S. Thomas.

Weakly convex sets and modulus of nonconvexity

We consider a definition of a weakly convex set which is a generalization of the notion of a weakly convex set in the sense of Vial and a proximally smooth set in the sense of Clarke, from the case of the Hilbert space to a class of Banach spaces with the modulus of convexity of the second order. Using the new definition of the weakly convex set with the given modulus of nonconvexity we prove a new retraction theorem and we obtain new results about continuity of the intersection of two continuous set-valued mappings (one of which has nonconvex images) and new affirmative solutions of the splitting problem for selections. We also investigate relationship between the new definition and the definition of a proximally smooth set and a smooth set.

Distinguishing Bing-Whitehead Cantor Sets

Bing-Whitehead Cantor sets were introduced by DeGryse and Osborne in dimension three and greater to produce examples of Cantor sets that were non standard (wild), but still had simply connected complement. In contrast to an earlier example of Kirkor, the construction techniques could be generalized to dimensions bigger than three. These Cantor sets in $S^{3}$ are constructed by using Bing or Whitehead links as stages in defining sequences. Ancel and Starbird, and separately Wright characterized the number of Bing links needed in such constructions so as to produce Cantor sets. However it was unknown whether varying the number of Bing and Whitehead links in the construction would produce non equivalent Cantor sets. Using a generalization of geometric index, and a careful analysis of three dimensional intersection patterns, we prove that Bing-Whitehead Cantor sets are equivalently embedded in $S^3$ if and only if their defining sequences differ by some finite number of Whitehead constructions. As a consequence, there are uncountably many non equivalent such Cantor sets in $S^{3}$ constructed with genus one tori and with simply connected complement.

On the Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of monoids with zero

We study algebraic properties of the Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of monoids with zero and non-trivial homomorphisms between the Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of monoids with zero. We introduce finite, compact topological Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological semigroups and countably compact topological Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological inverse semigroups in the class of topological inverse semigroups and establish the structure of such extensions and non-trivial continuous homomorphisms between such topological Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological monoids with zero. We also describe a category whose objects are ingredients in the constructions of finite (compact, countably compact) topological Brandt $λ^0$-extensions of topological monoids with zeros.

A unified construction yielding precisely Hilbert and James sequences spaces

Following James' approach, we shall define the Banach space $J(e)$ for each vector $e=(e_1,e_2,...,e_d) \in \Bbb{R}^d$ with $ e_1 \ne 0$. The construction immediately implies that J(1) coincides with the Hilbert space $i_2$ and that $J(1;-1)$ coincides with the celebrated quasireflexive James space $J$. The results of this paper show that, up to an isomorphism, there are only the following two possibilities: (i) either $J(e)$ is isomorphic to $l_2$, if $e_1+e_2+...+e_d\ne 0$ (ii) or $J(e)$ is isomorphic to $J$. Such a dichotomy also holds for every separable Orlicz sequence space $l_M$.

On chains in $H$-closed topological pospaces

We study chains in an $H$-closed topological partially ordered space. We give sufficient conditions for a maximal chain $L$ in an $H$-closed topological partially ordered space such that $L$ contains a maximal (minimal) element. Also we give sufficient conditions for a linearly ordered topological partially ordered space to be $H$-closed. We prove that any $H$-closed topological semilattice contains a zero. We show that a linearly ordered $H$-closed topological semilattice is an $H$-closed topological pospace and show that in the general case this is not true. We construct an example an $H$-closed topological pospace with a non-$H$-closed maximal chain and give sufficient conditions that a maximal chain of an $H$-closed topological pospace is an $H$-closed topological pospace.

Packing index of subsets in Polish groups

For a subset $A$ of a Polish group $G$, we study the (almost) packing index $\ind_P(A)$ (resp. $\Ind_P(A)$) of $A$, equal to the supremum of cardinalities $|S|$ of subsets $S\subset G$ such that the family of shifts $\{xA\}_{x\in S}$ is (almost) disjoint (in the sense that $|xA\cap yA|<|A|$ for any distinct points $x,y\in S$). Subsets $A\subset G$ with small (almost) packing index are small in a geometric sense. We show that $\ind_P(A)\in \IN\cup\{\aleph_0,\cc\}$ for any $σ$-compact subset $A$ of a Polish group. If $A\subset G$ is Borel, then the packing indices $\ind_P(A)$ and $\Ind_P(A)$ cannot take values in the half-interval $[\sq(Π^1_1),\cc)$ where $\sq(Π^1_1)$ is a certain uncountable cardinal that is smaller than $\cc$ in some models of ZFC. In each non-discrete Polish Abelian group $G$ we construct two closed subsets $A,B\subset G$ with $\ind_P(A)=\ind_P(B)=\cc$ and $\Ind_P(A\cup B)=1$ and then apply this result to show that $G$ contains a nowhere dense Haar null subset $C\subset G$ with $\ind_P(C)=\Ind_P(C)=κ$ for any given cardinal number $κ\in[4,\cc]$.
