Anomaly Detection of Smart Metering System for Power Management with Battery Storage System/Electric Vehicle

A novel smart metering technique capable of anomaly detection was proposed for real-time home power management system. Smart meter data generated in real-time was obtained from 900 households of single apartments. To detect outliers and missing values in smart meter data, a deep learning model, the autoencoder, consisting of a graph convolutional network and bidirectional long short-term memory network, was applied to the smart metering technique. Power management based on the smart metering technique was performed by multi-objective optimization in the presence of a battery storage system and an electric vehicle. The results of the power management employing the proposed smart metering technique indicate a reduction in electricity cost and amount of power supplied by the grid compared to the results of power management without anomaly detection.

Development of Charging, Discharging Scheduling Algorithm for Economical and Energy Efficient Operation of Multi EV Charging Station

As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) significantly increases, the excessive charging demand of parked EVs in the charging station may incur an instability problem to the electricity network during peak hours. For the charging station to take a microgrid (MG) structure, an economical and energy-efficient power management scheme is required for the power provision of EVs while considering the local load demand of the MG. For these purposes, this study presents the power management scheme of interdependent MG and EV fleets aided by a novel EV charg-ing/discharging scheduling algorithm. In this algorithm, the maximum amount of discharging power from parked EVs is determined based on the difference between local load demand and photovoltaic (PV) power production to alleviate imbalances occurred between them. For the power management of the MG with charging/discharging scheduling of parked EVs in the PV-based charging station, multi-objective optimization is performed to minimize the operating cost and grid dependency. In addition, the proposed scheme maximizes the utilization of EV charging/discharging while satisfying the charging requirements of parked EVs. Moreover, a more economical and energy-efficient PV-based charging station is established using the future trends of local load demand and PV power production predicted by a gated recurrent unit (GRU) network. With the proposed EV charging/discharging scheduling algorithm, the operating cost of PV-based charging station is decreased by 167.71% and 28.85% compared with the EV charg-ing scheduling algorithm and the conventional EV charging/discharging scheduling algorithm, respectively. It is obvious that the economical and energy-efficient operation of PV-based charging station can be accomplished by applying the power management scheme with the proposed EV charging/discharging scheduling strategy.

Path Planning of Cleaning Robot with Reinforcement Learning

Recently, as the demand for cleaning robots has steadily increased, therefore household electricity consumption is also increasing. To solve this electricity consumption issue, the problem of efficient path planning for cleaning robot has become important and many studies have been conducted. However, most of them are about moving along a simple path segment, not about the whole path to clean all places. As the emerging deep learning technique, reinforcement learning (RL) has been adopted for cleaning robot. However, the models for RL operate only in a specific cleaning environment, not the various cleaning environment. The problem is that the models have to retrain whenever the cleaning environment changes. To solve this problem, the proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm is combined with an efficient path planning that operates in various cleaning environments, using transfer learning (TL), detection nearest cleaned tile, reward shaping, and making elite set methods. The proposed method is validated with an ablation study and comparison with conventional methods such as random and zigzag. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves improved training performance and increased convergence speed over the original PPO. And it also demonstrates that this proposed method is better performance than conventional methods (random, zigzag).

Reinforcement Learning-Based Cooperative P2P Power Trading between DC Nanogrid Clusters with Wind and PV Energy Resources

In replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy resources for carbon neutrality, the unbalanced resource production of intermittent wind and photovoltaic (PV) power is a critical issue for peer-to-peer (P2P) power trading. To address this issue, a reinforcement learning (RL) technique is introduced in this paper. For RL, a graph convolutional network (GCN) and a bi-directional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) network are jointly applied to P2P power trading between nanogrid clusters, based on cooperative game theory. The flexible and reliable DC nanogrid is suitable for integrating renewable energy for a distribution system. Each local nanogrid cluster takes the position of prosumer, focusing on power production and consumption simultaneously. For the power management of nanogrid cluster, multi-objective optimization is applied to each local nanogrid cluster with the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Charging/discharging of an electric vehicle (EV) is executed considering the intermittent characteristics of wind and PV power production. RL algorithms, such as GCN- convolutional neural network (CNN) layers for deep Q-learning network (DQN), GCN-LSTM layers for deep recurrent Q-learning network (DRQN), GCN-Bi-LSTM layers for DRQN, and GCN-Bi-LSTM layers for proximal policy optimization (PPO), are used for simulations. Consequently, the cooperative P2P power trading system maximizes the profit by considering the time of use (ToU) tariff-based electricity cost and the system marginal price (SMP), and minimizes the amount of grid power consumption. Power management of nanogrid clusters with P2P power trading is simulated on a distribution test feeder in real time, and the proposed GCN-Bi-LSTM-PPO technique achieving the lowest electricity cost among the RL algorithms used for comparison reduces the electricity cost by 36.7%, averaging over nanogrid clusters.

RelMobNet: End-to-end relative camera pose estimation using a robust two-stage training

Relative camera pose estimation, i.e. estimating the translation and rotation vectors using a pair of images taken in different locations, is an important part of systems in augmented reality and robotics. In this paper, we present an end-to-end relative camera pose estimation network using a siamese architecture that is independent of camera parameters. The network is trained using the Cambridge Landmarks data with four individual scene datasets and a dataset combining the four scenes. To improve generalization, we propose a novel two-stage training that alleviates the need of a hyperparameter to balance the translation and rotation loss scale. The proposed method is compared with one-stage training CNN-based methods such as RPNet and RCPNet and demonstrate that the proposed model improves translation vector estimation by 16.11%, 28.88%, and 52.27% on the Kings College, Old Hospital, and St Marys Church scenes, respectively. For proving texture invariance, we investigate the generalization of the proposed method augmenting the datasets to different scene styles, as ablation studies, using generative adversarial networks. Also, we present a qualitative assessment of epipolar lines of our network predictions and ground truth poses.

Power Management of Nanogrid Cluster with P2P Electricity Trading Based on Future Trends of Load Demand and PV Power Production

This paper presents the power management of the nanogrid clusters assisted by a novel peer-to-peer(P2P) electricity trading. In our work, unbalance of power consumption among clusters is mitigated by the proposed P2P trading method. For power management of individual clusters, multi-objective optimization simultaneously minimizing total power consumption, portion of grid power consumption, and total delay incurred by scheduling is attempted. A renewable power source photovoltaic(PV) system is adopted for each cluster as a secondary source. The temporal surplus of self-supply PV power of a cluster can be sold through P2P trading to another cluster (s) experiencing temporal power shortage. The cluster in temporal shortage of electric power buys the PV power to reduce peak load and total delay. In P2P trading, a cooperative game model is used for buyers and sellers to maximize their welfare. To increase P2P trading efficiency, future trends of load demand and PV power production are considered for power management of each cluster to resolve instantaneous unbalance between load demand and PV power production. To this end, a gated recurrent unit network is used to forecast future load demand and future PV power production. Simulations verify the effectiveness of the proposed P2P trading for nanogrid clusters.

Data Transmission with Reduced Delay for Distributed Acoustic Sensors

This paper proposes a channel access control scheme fit to dense acoustic sensor nodes in a sensor network. In the considered scenario, multiple acoustic sensor nodes within communication range of a cluster head are grouped into clusters. Acoustic sensor nodes in a cluster detect acoustic signals and convert them into electric signals (packets). Detection by acoustic sensors can be executed periodically or randomly and random detection by acoustic sensors is event driven. As a result, each acoustic sensor generates their packets (50bytes each) periodically or randomly over short time intervals (400ms~4seconds) and transmits directly to a cluster head (coordinator node). Our approach proposes to use a slotted carrier sense multiple access. All acoustic sensor nodes in a cluster are allocated to time slots and the number of allocated sensor nodes to each time slot is uniform. All sensor nodes allocated to a time slot listen for packet transmission from the beginning of the time slot for a duration proportional to their priority. The first node that detect the channel to be free for its whole window is allowed to transmit. The order of packet transmissions with the acoustic sensor nodes in the time slot is autonomously adjusted according to the history of packet transmissions in the time slot. In simulations, performances of the proposed scheme are demonstrated by the comparisons with other low rate wireless channel access schemes.

As elderly population increases, portion of dementia patients becomes larger. Thus social cost of caring dementia patients has been a major concern to many nations. This article introduces a dementia assistive system operated by various sensors and devices installed in body area and activity area of patients. Since this system is served based on a network which includes a number of nodes, it requires techniques to reduce the network performance degradation caused by densely composed sensors and devices. This article introduces existing protocols for communications of sensors and devices at both low rate and high rate transmission.

Energy-Efficient Infrastructure Sensor Network for Ad Hoc Cognitive Radio Network

We propose an energy-efficient network architecture that consists of ad hoc (mobile) cognitive radios (CRs) and infrastructure wireless sensor nodes. The sensor nodes within communications range of each CR are grouped into a cluster and the clusters of CRs are regularly updated according to the random mobility of the CRs. We reduce the energy consumption and the end-to-end delay of the sensor network by dividing each cluster into disjoint subsets with overlapped sensing coverage of primary user (PU) activity. Respective subset of a CR provides target detection and false alarm probabilities. Substantial energy efficiency is achieved by activating only one subset of the cluster, while putting the rest of the subsets in the cluster into sleep mode.

Situation-Aware Integration and Transmission of Safety Information for Smart Railway Vehicles

Recent trend of railway train development can be characterized in several aspects : high speed, infortainment, intelligence in driving, and so on. In particular, trend of high speed in driving is prominent and competition for high speed amongst several techno-savvy countries is becoming severe. To achieve high speed, engines or motors are distributed over multiple vehicles of train to provide increased motive power, while a single engine or motor has been mostly used for conventional trains. Increased speed and more complicated powertrain system naturally incur much higher chance of massive accidents. From this perspective, importance of proactive safety control before accident takes place cannot be over-emphasized. To implement proactive safety control requires situation-aware integration and transmission of safety information obtained from IoT sensors. Types of critical IoT sensors depend on situational conditions. Thus, integration and transmission of safety information should be performed with IoT sensors providing the safety information proper for faced situation. This brief paper is to devise a methodology how to operate IoT sensor network enabling proactive safety control for railway vehicles and to propose a queue management based medium access control scheme.

Wireless Power Transfer for High-precision Position Detection of Railroad Vehicles

Detection of vehicle position is critical for successful operation of intelligent transportation system. In case of railroad transportation systems, position information of railroad vehicles can be detected by GPS, track circuits, and so on. In this paper, position detection based on tags onto sleepers of the track is investigated. Position information stored in the tags is read by a reader placed at the bottom of running railroad vehicle. Due to limited capacity of battery or its alternative in the tags, power required for transmission of position information to the reader is harvested by the tags from the power wirelessly transferred from the reader. Basic mechanism in wireless power transfer is magnetic induction and power transfer efficiency according to the relative location of the reader to a tag is discussed with simulation results. Since power transfer efficiency is significantly affected by the ferromagnetic material (steel) at the bottom of the railroad vehicle and the track, magnetic beam shaping by ferrite material is carried out. With the ferrite material for magnetic beam shaping, degradation of power transfer efficiency due to the steel is substantially reduced. Based on the experimental results, successful wireless power transfer to the tag coil is possible when transmitted power from the reader coil is close to a few watts.
