A Stone-von Neumann equivalence of categories for smooth representations of the Heisenberg group

The classical Stone-von Neuman theorem relates the irreducible unitary representations of the Heisenberg group $H_n$ to non-trivial unitary characters of its center $Z$, and plays a crucial role in the construction of the oscillator representation for the metaplectic group. In this paper we extend these ideas to non-unitary and non-irreducible representations, thereby obtaining an equivalence of categories between certain representations of $Z$ and those of $H_n$. Our main result is a smooth equivalence, which involves the fundamental ideas of du Cloux on differentiable representations and smooth imprimitivity systems for Nash groups. We show how to extend the oscillator representation to the smooth setting and give an application to degenerate Whittaker models for representations of reductive groups. We also include an algebraic equivalence, which can be regarded as a generalization of Kashiwara's lemma from the theory of $D$-modules.

A reduction principle for Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms

We consider a general class of Fourier coefficients for an automorphic form on a finite cover of a reductive adelic group ${\bf G}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{K}})$, associated to the data of a `Whittaker pair'. We describe a quasi-order on Fourier coefficients, and an algorithm that gives an explicit formula for any coefficient in terms of integrals and sums involving higher coefficients. The maximal elements for the quasi-order are `Levi-distinguished' Fourier coefficients, which correspond to taking the constant term along the unipotent radical of a parabolic subgroup, and then further taking a Fourier coefficient with respect to a $\mathbb{K}$-distinguished nilpotent orbit in the Levi quotient. Thus one can express any Fourier coefficient, including the form itself, in terms of higher Levi-distinguished coefficients. In follow-up papers we use this result to determine explicit Fourier expansions of minimal and next-to-minimal automorphic forms on split simply-laced reductive groups, and to obtain Euler product decompositions of their top Fourier coefficients.

Eulerianity of Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms

We study the question of Eulerianity (factorizability) for Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms, and we prove a general transfer theorem that allows one to deduce the Eulerianity of certain coefficients from that of another coefficient. We also establish a `hidden' invariance property of Fourier coefficients. We apply these results to minimal and next-to-minimal automorphic representations, and deduce Eulerianity for a large class of Fourier and Fourier-Jacobi coefficients. In particular, we prove Eulerianity for parabolic Fourier coefficients with characters of maximal rank for a class of Eisenstein series in minimal and next-to-minimal representations of groups of ADE-type that are of interest in string theory.

Multiplicity one theorems for the generalized doubling method

In this work we prove the local multiplicity at most one theorem underlying the definition and theory of local $γ$-, $ε$- and $L$-factors, defined by virtue of the generalized doubling method, over any local field of characteristic 0. We also present two applications: one to the existence of local factors for genuine representations of covering groups, the other to the global unfolding argument of the doubling integral.

Whittaker supports for representations of reductive groups

Let $F$ be either $\mathbb{R}$ or a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $G$ be a finite central extension of the group of $F$-points of a reductive group defined over $F$. Also let $π$ be a smooth representation of $G$ (Frechet of moderate growth if $F=\mathbb{R}$). For each nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}$ we consider a certain Whittaker quotient $π_{\mathcal{O}}$ of $π$. We define the Whittaker support WS$(π)$ to be the set of maximal $\mathcal{O}$ among those for which $π_{\mathcal{O}}\neq 0$. In this paper we prove that all $\mathcal{O}\in\mathrm{WS}(π)$ are quasi-admissible nilpotent orbits, generalizing some of the results in [Moe96,JLS16]. If $F$ is $p$-adic and $π$ is quasi-cuspidal then we show that all $\mathcal{O}\in\mathrm{WS}(π)$ are $F$-distinguished, i.e. do not intersect the Lie algebra of any proper Levi subgroup of $G$ defined over $F$. We also give an adaptation of our argument to automorphic representations, generalizing some results from [GRS03,Shen16,JLS16,Cai] and confirming some conjectures from [Ginz06]. Our methods are a synergy of the methods of the above-mentioned papers, and of our preceding paper [GGS17].

Invariant generalized functions supported on an orbit

We study the space of invariant generalized functions supported on an orbit of the action of a real algebraic group on a real algebraic manifold. This space is equipped with the Bruhat filtration. We study the generating function of the dimensions of the filtras, and give some methods to compute it. To illustrate our methods we compute those generating functions for the adjoint action of $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{C})$. Our main tool is the notion of generalized functions on a real algebraic stack, introduced recently by Sakellaridis.

Holonomicity of relative characters and applications to multiplicity bounds for spherical pairs

In this paper, we prove that any relative character (a.k.a. spherical character) of any admissible representation of a real reductive group with respect to any pair of spherical subgroups is a holonomic distribution on the group. This implies that the restriction of the relative character to an open dense subset is given by an analytic function. The proof is based on an argument from algebraic geometry and thus implies also analogous results in the p-adic case. As an application, we give a short proof of some results from [KO13,KS16] on boundedness and finiteness of multiplicities of irreducible representations in the space of functions on a spherical space. In order to deduce this application we prove relative and quantitative analogs of the Bernstein-Kashiwara theorem, which states that the space of solutions of a holonomic system of differential equations in the space of distributions is finite-dimensional. We also deduce that, for every algebraic group $G$ defined over $\mathbb{R}$, the space of $G(\mathbb{R})$-equivariant distributions on the manifold of real points of any algebraic $G$-manifold $X$ is finite-dimensional if $G$ has finitely many orbits on $X$.

Invariant Functionals on the Speh representation

We study Sp(2n,R)-invariant functionals on the spaces of smooth vectors in Speh representations of GL(2n,R). For even n we give expressions for such invariant functionals using an explicit realization of the space of smooth vectors in the Speh representations. Furthermore, we show that the functional we construct is, up to a constant, the unique functional on the Speh representation which is invariant under the Siegel parabolic subgroup of Sp(2n,R). For odd n we show that the Speh representations do not admit an invariant functional with respect to the subgroup U(n) of Sp(2n,R) consisting of unitary matrices. Our construction, combined with the argument in [GOSS12], gives a purely local and explicit construction of Klyachko models for all unitary representations of GL(2n,R).

On an analytic description of the $α$-cosine transform on real Grassmannians

The goal of this paper is to describe the $α$-cosine transform on functions on a Grassmannian of $i$-planes in an $n$-dimensional real vector space. in analytic terms as explicitly as possible. We show that for all but finitely many complex $α$ the $α$-cosine transform is a composition of the $(α+2)$-cosine transform with an explicitly written (though complicated) O(n)-invariant differential operator. For all exceptional values of $α$ except one we interpret the $α$-cosine transform explicitly as either the Radon transform or composition of two Radon transforms. Explicit interpretation of the transform corresponding to the last remaining value $α$, which is $-(min\{i,n-i\}+1)$, is still an open problem.

z-Finite distributions on p-adic groups

For a real reductive group G, the center $\mathfrak{z}(\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{g}))$ of the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of G acts on the space of distributions on G. This action proved to be very useful (see e.g. [HC63, HC65, Sha74, Bar03]). Over non-Archimedean local fields, one can replace this action by the action of the Bernstein center z of G, i.e. the center of the category of smooth representations. However, this action is not well studied. In this paper we provide some tools to work with this action and prove the following results. 1) The wave-front set of any z-finite distribution on G over any point $g\in G$ lies inside the nilpotent cone of $T_g^*G \cong \mathfrak{g}$. 2) Let $H_1,H_2 \subset G$ be symmetric subgroups. Consider the space J of $H_1\times H_2$-invariant distributions on G. We prove that the z-finite distributions in J form a dense subspace. In fact we prove this result in wider generality, where the groups $H_i$ are spherical groups of certain type and the invariance condition is replaced by equivariance. Further we apply those results to density and regularity of spherical characters. The first result can be viewed as a version of Howe's expansion of characters. The second result can be viewed as a spherical space analog of a classical theorem on density of characters of admissible representations. It can also be viewed as a spectral version of Bernstein's localization principle. In the Archimedean case, the first result is well-known and the second remains open.

Derivatives for smooth representations of GL(n,R) and GL(n,C)

The notion of derivatives for smooth representations of GL(n) in the p-adic case was defined by J. Bernstein and A. Zelevinsky. In the archimedean case, an analog of the highest derivative was defined for irreducible unitary representations by S. Sahi and called the "adduced" representation. In this paper we define derivatives of all order for smooth admissible Frechet representations (of moderate growth). The archimedean case is more problematic than the p-adic case; for example arbitrary derivatives need not be admissible. However, the highest derivative continues being admissible, and for irreducible unitarizable representations coincides with the space of smooth vectors of the adduced representation. In [AGS] we prove exactness of the highest derivative functor, and compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. We prove exactness of the highest derivative functor, and compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. We apply those results to finish the computation of adduced representations for all irreducible unitary representations and to prove uniqueness of degenerate Whittaker models for unitary representations, thus completing the results of [Sah89, Sah90, SaSt90, GS12].

Twisted homology for the mirabolic nilradical

The notion of derivatives for smooth representations of $GL(n,\mathbb{Q}_p)$ was defined in [BZ77]. In the archimedean case, an analog of the highest derivative was defined for irreducible unitary representations in [Sah89] and called the "adduced" representation. In [AGS] derivatives of all orders were defined for smooth admissible Frechet representations (of moderate growth). A key ingredient of this definition is the functor of twisted coinvariants with respect to the nilradical of the mirabolic subgroup. In this paper we prove exactness of this functor and compute it on a certain class of representations. This implies exactness of the highest derivative functor, and allows to compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. In [AGS] these results are applied to finish the computation of adduced representations for all irreducible unitary representations and to prove uniqueness of degenerate Whittaker models for unitary representations.

Vanishing of certain equivariant distributions on spherical spaces

We prove vanishing of distributions on a split real reductive group which change according to a non-degenerate character under the left action of the unipotent radical of the Borel subgroup, and are equivariant under the right action of a spherical subgroup, and eigen with respect to the center of the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of G. This is a generalization of a result by Shalika, that concerned the group case. Shalika's result was crucial in the proof of his multiplicity one theorem. We view our result as a step in the study of multiplicities of quasi-regular representations on spherical varieties. As an application we prove non-vanishing of spherical Bessel functions.

Annihilator varieties, highest derivatives, Whittaker functionals, and rank for unitary representations of GL(n,R)

In this paper we study irreducible unitary representations of GL(n,R) and prove a number of results. Our first result establishes a precise connection between the annihilator of a representation and the existence of degenerate Whittaker functionals, for both smooth and K-finite vectors, thereby generalizing results of Kostant, Matumoto and others. Our second result relates the annihilator to the sequence of highest derivatives, as defined in this setting by one of the authors. Based on those results, we suggest a new notion of rank of a smooth admissible representation of GL(n,R), which for unitarizable representations refines Howe's notion of rank. Our third result computes the highest derivatives for (almost) all unitary representations in terms of the Vogan classification. We also indicate briefly the analogous results over complex and p-adic fields.

Irreducible representations of product of real reductive groups

Let $G_1,G_2$ be real reductive groups and $(π,V)$ a smooth, irreducible, admissible representation of $G_1 \times G_2$. We prove that $(π,V)$ is the completed tensor product of $(π_i,V_i)$, $i=1,2$, where $(π_i,V_i)$ is a smooth, irreducible, admissible representation of $G_i$, $i=1,2$. We deduce this from the analogous theorem for Harish-Chandra modules, for which one direction was proven in [AG] and the other direction we prove here. As a corollary, we deduce that strong Gelfand property for a pair $H \subset G$ of real reductive groups is equivalent to the usual Gelfand property of the pair $ΔH \subset G \times H$.

Spherical Pairs Over Close Local Fields

Extending results of Kazhdan to the relative case, we relate harmonic analysis over some spherical spaces G(F)/H(F), where F is a field of positive characteristic, to harmonic analysis over the spherical spaces G(E)/H(E), where E is a suitably chosen field of characteristic 0. One of the Ingredients of the proof is a condition for finite generation of some modules over the Hecke algebra. We apply our results to show that the pair (GL_{n+1},GL_n) is a strong Gelfand pair for all local fields, and that the pair (GL_{n+k},GL_n x GL_k) is a Gelfand pair for all local fields of odd characteristic.

Smooth Transfer (the Archimedean case)

We establish the existence of a transfer, which is compatible with Kloosterman integrals, between Schwartz functions on GL(n,R) and Schwartz functions on the variety of non-degenerate Hermitian forms. Namely, we consider an integral of a Schwartz function on GL(n,R) along the orbits of the two sided action of the groups of upper and lower unipotent matrices twisted by a non-degenerate character. This gives a smooth function on the torus. We prove that the space of all functions obtained in such a way coincides with the space that is constructed analogously when GL(n,R) is replaced with the variety of non-degenerate hermitian forms. We also obtain similar results for gl(n,R). The non-Archimedean case is done by Jacquet and our proof follows the same lines. However we have to face additional essential difficulties that appear only in the Archimedean case.

Some regular symmetric pairs

In [AG2] we explored the question what symmetric pairs are Gelfand pairs. We introduced the notion of regular symmetric pair and conjectured that all symmetric pairs are regular. This conjecture would imply that many symmetric pairs are Gelfand pairs, and in particular that any connected symmetric pair over C is a Gelfand pair. In this paper we show that the pairs $$(GL(V),O(V)), (GL(V),U(V)), (U(V),O(V)), (O(V \oplus W),O(V) \times O(W)), (U(V \oplus W),U(V) \times U(W))$$ are regular where V and W are quadratic or hermitian spaces over arbitrary local field of characteristic zero. We deduce from that that the pairs $(GL_n(\C),O_n(\C))$ and $(O_{n+m}(\C),O_n(\C) \times O_m(\C))$ are Gelfand pairs.

De-Rham theorem and Shapiro lemma for Schwartz functions on Nash manifolds

In this paper we continue our work on Schwartz functions and generalized Schwartz functions on Nash (i.e. smooth semi-algebraic) manifolds. Our first goal is to prove analogs of de-Rham theorem for de-Rham complexes with coefficients in Schwartz functions and generalized Schwartz functions. Using that we compute cohomologies of the Lie algebra of an algebraic group G with coefficients in the space of generalized Schwartz sections of G-equivariant bundle over a G-transitive variety M. We do it under some assumptions on topological properties of G and M. This computation for the classical case is known as Shapiro lemma.

A proof of the multiplicity one conjecture for GL(n) in GL(n+1)

Let F be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. We consider distributions on GL(n+1,F) which are invariant under the adjoint action of GL(n,F). We prove that any such distribution is invariant with respect to transposition. This implies that the restriction to GL(n) of any irreducible smooth representation of GL(n+1) is multiplicity free. Our paper is based on the recent work [RS] of Steve Rallis and Gerard Schiffmann where they made a remarkable progress on this problem. In [RS], they also show that our result implies multiplicity one theorem for restrictions from the orthogonal group $O(V \oplus F)$ to $O(V)$.
