A Stone-von Neumann equivalence of categories for smooth representations of the Heisenberg group

The classical Stone-von Neuman theorem relates the irreducible unitary representations of the Heisenberg group $H_n$ to non-trivial unitary characters of its center $Z$, and plays a crucial role in the construction of the oscillator representation for the metaplectic group. In this paper we extend these ideas to non-unitary and non-irreducible representations, thereby obtaining an equivalence of categories between certain representations of $Z$ and those of $H_n$. Our main result is a smooth equivalence, which involves the fundamental ideas of du Cloux on differentiable representations and smooth imprimitivity systems for Nash groups. We show how to extend the oscillator representation to the smooth setting and give an application to degenerate Whittaker models for representations of reductive groups. We also include an algebraic equivalence, which can be regarded as a generalization of Kashiwara's lemma from the theory of $D$-modules.

On the extension of the FKG inequality to $n$ functions

The 1971 Fortuin-Kasteleyn-Ginibre (FKG) inequality for two monotone functions on a distributive lattice is well known and has seen many applications in statistical mechanics and other fields of mathematics. In 2008 one of us (Sahi) conjectured an extended version of this inequality for all $n>2$ monotone functions on a distributive lattice. Here we prove the conjecture for two special cases: for monotone functions on the unit square in ${\mathbb R}^k$ whose upper level sets are $k$-dimensional rectangles, and, more significantly, for arbitrary monotone functions on the unit square in ${\mathbb R}^2$. The general case for ${\mathbb R}^k, k>2$ remains open.

Random and mean Lyapunov exponents for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{R})$

We consider orthogonally invariant probability measures on $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ and compare the mean of the logs of the moduli of eigenvalues of the matrices to the Lyapunov exponents of random matrix products independently drawn with respect to the measure. We give a lower bound for the former in terms of the latter. The results are motivated by Dedieu-Shub\cite{DS}. A novel feature of our treatment is the use of the theory of spherical polynomials in the proof of our main result.

A reduction principle for Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms

We consider a general class of Fourier coefficients for an automorphic form on a finite cover of a reductive adelic group ${\bf G}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{K}})$, associated to the data of a `Whittaker pair'. We describe a quasi-order on Fourier coefficients, and an algorithm that gives an explicit formula for any coefficient in terms of integrals and sums involving higher coefficients. The maximal elements for the quasi-order are `Levi-distinguished' Fourier coefficients, which correspond to taking the constant term along the unipotent radical of a parabolic subgroup, and then further taking a Fourier coefficient with respect to a $\mathbb{K}$-distinguished nilpotent orbit in the Levi quotient. Thus one can express any Fourier coefficient, including the form itself, in terms of higher Levi-distinguished coefficients. In follow-up papers we use this result to determine explicit Fourier expansions of minimal and next-to-minimal automorphic forms on split simply-laced reductive groups, and to obtain Euler product decompositions of their top Fourier coefficients.

Capelli operators for spherical superharmonics and the Dougall-Ramanujan identity

Let $(V,ω)$ be an orthosympectic $\mathbb Z_2$-graded vector space and let $\mathfrak g:=\mathfrak{gosp}(V,ω)$ denote the Lie superalgebra of similitudes of $(V,ω)$. When the space $\mathscr P(V)$ of superpolynomials on $V$ is \emph{not} a completely reducible $\mathfrak g$-module, we construct a natural basis $D_λ$ of Capelli operators for the algebra of $\mathfrak g$-invariant superpolynomial superdifferential operators on $V$, where the index set $\mathcal P$ is the set of integer partitions of length at most two. We compute the action of the operators $D_λ$ on maximal indecomposable components of $\mathscr P(V)$ explicitly, in terms of Knop-Sahi interpolation polynomials. Our results show that, unlike the cases where $\mathscr P(V)$ is completely reducible, the eigenvalues of a subfamily of the $D_λ$ are \emph{not} given by specializing the Knop-Sahi polynomials. Rather, the formulas for these eigenvalues involve suitably regularized forms of these polynomials. In addition, we demonstrate a close relationship between our eigenvalue formulas for this subfamily of Capelli operators and the Dougall-Ramanujan hypergeometric identity. We also transcend our results on the eigenvalues of Capelli operators to the Deligne category $\mathsf{Rep}(O_t)$. More precisely, we define categorical Capelli operators $\{\mathbf D_{t,λ}\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}^{}$ that induce morphisms of indecomposable components of symmetric powers of $\mathsf V_t$, where $\mathsf V_t$ is the generating object of $\mathsf{Rep}(O_t)$. We obtain formulas for the eigenvalue polynomials associated to the $\left\{\mathbf D_{t,λ}\right\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}$ that are analogous to our results for the operators $\{D_λ\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}^{}$.

Eulerianity of Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms

We study the question of Eulerianity (factorizability) for Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms, and we prove a general transfer theorem that allows one to deduce the Eulerianity of certain coefficients from that of another coefficient. We also establish a `hidden' invariance property of Fourier coefficients. We apply these results to minimal and next-to-minimal automorphic representations, and deduce Eulerianity for a large class of Fourier and Fourier-Jacobi coefficients. In particular, we prove Eulerianity for parabolic Fourier coefficients with characters of maximal rank for a class of Eisenstein series in minimal and next-to-minimal representations of groups of ADE-type that are of interest in string theory.

Whittaker supports for representations of reductive groups

Let $F$ be either $\mathbb{R}$ or a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $G$ be a finite central extension of the group of $F$-points of a reductive group defined over $F$. Also let $π$ be a smooth representation of $G$ (Frechet of moderate growth if $F=\mathbb{R}$). For each nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}$ we consider a certain Whittaker quotient $π_{\mathcal{O}}$ of $π$. We define the Whittaker support WS$(π)$ to be the set of maximal $\mathcal{O}$ among those for which $π_{\mathcal{O}}\neq 0$. In this paper we prove that all $\mathcal{O}\in\mathrm{WS}(π)$ are quasi-admissible nilpotent orbits, generalizing some of the results in [Moe96,JLS16]. If $F$ is $p$-adic and $π$ is quasi-cuspidal then we show that all $\mathcal{O}\in\mathrm{WS}(π)$ are $F$-distinguished, i.e. do not intersect the Lie algebra of any proper Levi subgroup of $G$ defined over $F$. We also give an adaptation of our argument to automorphic representations, generalizing some results from [GRS03,Shen16,JLS16,Cai] and confirming some conjectures from [Ginz06]. Our methods are a synergy of the methods of the above-mentioned papers, and of our preceding paper [GGS17].

Positivity of Shimura operators

In [16] G. Shimura introduced a family of invariant differential operators that play a key role in the study of nearly holomorphic automorphic forms, and he asked for a determination of their \textquotedblleft domain of positivity\textquotedblright. In this paper we relate the eigenvalues of Shimura operators to certain polynomials introduced by A. Okounkov, which leads to an explicit answer to Shimura's questions.

The Capelli problem for $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$ and the spectrum of invariant differential operators

The "Capelli problem" for the symmetric pairs $(\mathfrak{gl}\times \mathfrak{gl},\mathfrak{gl})$ $(\mathfrak{gl},\mathfrak{o})$, and $(\mathfrak{gl},\mathfrak{sp})$ is closely related to the theory of Jack polynomials and shifted Jack polynomials for special values of the parameter. In this paper, we extend this connection to the Lie superalgebra setting, namely to the supersymmetric pairs $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{g}):=(\mathfrak{gl}(m|2n),\mathfrak{osp}(m|2n))$ and $(\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)\times\mathfrak{gl}(m|n),\mathfrak{gl}(m|n))$, acting on $W:=S^2(\mathbb C^{m|2n})$ and $\mathbb C^{m|n}\otimes(\mathbb C^{m|n})^*$. We also give an affirmative answer to the abstract Capelli problem for these cases.

Invariant Functionals on the Speh representation

We study Sp(2n,R)-invariant functionals on the spaces of smooth vectors in Speh representations of GL(2n,R). For even n we give expressions for such invariant functionals using an explicit realization of the space of smooth vectors in the Speh representations. Furthermore, we show that the functional we construct is, up to a constant, the unique functional on the Speh representation which is invariant under the Siegel parabolic subgroup of Sp(2n,R). For odd n we show that the Speh representations do not admit an invariant functional with respect to the subgroup U(n) of Sp(2n,R) consisting of unitary matrices. Our construction, combined with the argument in [GOSS12], gives a purely local and explicit construction of Klyachko models for all unitary representations of GL(2n,R).

On an analytic description of the $α$-cosine transform on real Grassmannians

The goal of this paper is to describe the $α$-cosine transform on functions on a Grassmannian of $i$-planes in an $n$-dimensional real vector space. in analytic terms as explicitly as possible. We show that for all but finitely many complex $α$ the $α$-cosine transform is a composition of the $(α+2)$-cosine transform with an explicitly written (though complicated) O(n)-invariant differential operator. For all exceptional values of $α$ except one we interpret the $α$-cosine transform explicitly as either the Radon transform or composition of two Radon transforms. Explicit interpretation of the transform corresponding to the last remaining value $α$, which is $-(min\{i,n-i\}+1)$, is still an open problem.

The Capelli identity and Radon transform for Grassmannians

We study a family $C_{s,l}$ of Capelli-type invariant differential operators on the space of rectangular matrices over a real division algebra. The $C_{s,l}$ descend to invariant differential operators on the corresponding Grassmannian, which is a compact symmetric space, and we determine the image of the $C_{s,l}$ under the Harish-Chandra homomorphism. We also obtain analogous results for corresponding operators on the non-compact duals of the Grassmannians, and for line bundles. As an application we obtain a Radon inversion formula, which generalizes a recent result of B. Rubin for real Grassmannians.

Derivatives for smooth representations of GL(n,R) and GL(n,C)

The notion of derivatives for smooth representations of GL(n) in the p-adic case was defined by J. Bernstein and A. Zelevinsky. In the archimedean case, an analog of the highest derivative was defined for irreducible unitary representations by S. Sahi and called the "adduced" representation. In this paper we define derivatives of all order for smooth admissible Frechet representations (of moderate growth). The archimedean case is more problematic than the p-adic case; for example arbitrary derivatives need not be admissible. However, the highest derivative continues being admissible, and for irreducible unitarizable representations coincides with the space of smooth vectors of the adduced representation. In [AGS] we prove exactness of the highest derivative functor, and compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. We prove exactness of the highest derivative functor, and compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. We apply those results to finish the computation of adduced representations for all irreducible unitary representations and to prove uniqueness of degenerate Whittaker models for unitary representations, thus completing the results of [Sah89, Sah90, SaSt90, GS12].

Twisted homology for the mirabolic nilradical

The notion of derivatives for smooth representations of $GL(n,\mathbb{Q}_p)$ was defined in [BZ77]. In the archimedean case, an analog of the highest derivative was defined for irreducible unitary representations in [Sah89] and called the "adduced" representation. In [AGS] derivatives of all orders were defined for smooth admissible Frechet representations (of moderate growth). A key ingredient of this definition is the functor of twisted coinvariants with respect to the nilradical of the mirabolic subgroup. In this paper we prove exactness of this functor and compute it on a certain class of representations. This implies exactness of the highest derivative functor, and allows to compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. In [AGS] these results are applied to finish the computation of adduced representations for all irreducible unitary representations and to prove uniqueness of degenerate Whittaker models for unitary representations.

Harmonic vectors and matrix tree theorems

The paper describes an explicit combinatorial formula for a harmonic vector for the Laplacian of a directed graph with arbitrary edge weights. This result was motivated by questions from mathematical economics, and the formula plays a crucial role in forthcoming joint work of the author on the emergence of prices and money in an exchange economy. It turns out that the formula is closely related to well-studied problems in graph theory, in particular to the so-called matrix tree theorem due to W. Tutte and independently to R. Bott and J. Mayberry. As a further application of our considerations, we obtain a short new proof of both the matrix tree theorem as well as its generalization due to S. Chaiken.

Annihilator varieties, highest derivatives, Whittaker functionals, and rank for unitary representations of GL(n,R)

In this paper we study irreducible unitary representations of GL(n,R) and prove a number of results. Our first result establishes a precise connection between the annihilator of a representation and the existence of degenerate Whittaker functionals, for both smooth and K-finite vectors, thereby generalizing results of Kostant, Matumoto and others. Our second result relates the annihilator to the sequence of highest derivatives, as defined in this setting by one of the authors. Based on those results, we suggest a new notion of rank of a smooth admissible representation of GL(n,R), which for unitarizable representations refines Howe's notion of rank. Our third result computes the highest derivatives for (almost) all unitary representations in terms of the Vogan classification. We also indicate briefly the analogous results over complex and p-adic fields.

Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms, character variety orbits, and small representations

We consider the Fourier expansions of automorphic forms on general Lie groups, with a particular emphasis on exceptional groups. After describing some principles underlying known results on GL(n), Sp(4), and G_2, we perform an analysis of the expansions on split real forms of E_6 and E_7 where simplifications take place for automorphic realizations of real representations which have small Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. Though the character varieties are more complicated for exceptional groups, we explain how the nonvanishing Fourier coefficients for small representations behave analogously to Fourier coefficients on GL(n). We use this mechanism, for example, to show that the minimal representation of either E_6 or E_7 never occurs in the cuspidal automorphic spectrum. We also give a complete description of the internal Chevalley modules of all complex Chevalley groups -- that is, the orbit decomposition of the Levi factor of a maximal parabolic on its unipotent radical. This generalizes classical results on trivectors and in particular includes a full description of the complex character variety orbits for all maximal parabolics. The results of this paper have been applied in the string theory literature to the study of BPS instanton contributions to graviton scattering [arXiv:1111.2983].

Explicit Hilbert spaces for certain unipotent representations III

We consider the groups G which arise from real semisimple Jordan algebras via the Tits-Koecher-Kantor construction. Such a G is characterized by the fact that it admits a parabolic subgroup P=LN which is conjugate to its opposite, and for which the nilradical N is abelian. In this situation, the Levi component L has a finite number of orbits on N; and each orbit carries a measure which transforms by a character under L. By Mackey theory the space of L2-functions on each orbit carries a natural irreducible unitary representation of P, and we consider the following two problems: (1) Extend this representation of P to a unitary representation of G. (2) Decompose tensor products of the resulting representations.
