Opinion formation at Ising social networks

We study the process of opinion formation in an Ising social network of scientific collaborations. The network is undirected. An Ising spin is associated with each network node being oriented up (red) or down (blue). Certain nodes carry fixed, opposite opinions whose influence propagates over the other spins, which are flipped according to the majority-influence opinion of neighbors of a given spin during the asynchronous Monte Carlo process. The amplitude influence of each spin is self-consistently adapted, and a flip occurs only if this majority influence exceeds a certain conviction threshold. All non-fixed spins are initially randomly distributed, with half of them oriented up and half down. Such a system can be viewed as a model of elite influence, coming from the fixed spins, on the opinions of the crowd of non-fixed spins. We show that a phase transition occurs as the amplitude influence of the crowd spins increases: the dominant opinion shifts from that of the elite nodes to a phase in which the crowd spins' opinion becomes dominant and the elite can no longer impose their views.

COVID-19 impact on the international trade

Using the United Nations Comtrade database, we perform the Google matrix analysis of the multiproduct World Trade Network (WTN) for the years 2018-2020 comprising the emergence of the COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The applied algorithms -- the PageRank, the CheiRank and the reduced Google matrix -- take into account the multiplicity of the WTN links providing new insights on the international trade comparing to the usual import-export analysis. These algorithms establish new rankings and trade balances of countries and products considering every countries on equal grounds, independently of their wealth, and every products on the basis of their relative exchanged volumes. In comparison with the pre-COVID-19 period, significant changes in these metrics occur for the year 2020 highlighting a major rewiring of the international trade flows induced by the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. We define a new PageRank-CheiRank product trade balance, either export or import oriented, which is significantly perturbed by the pandemic.

Random lasing from Anderson attractors

We introduce and study a two-dimensional dissipative nonlinear Anderson pumping model which is characterized by localized or delocalized eigenmodes in a linear regime and in addition includes nonlinearity, dissipation and pumping. We find that above a certain pumping threshold the model has narrow spectral lasing lines generated by isolated clusters of Anderson attractors. With the increase of the pumping, the lasing spectrum is broaden even if narrow lasing peaks are still well present in the localized phase of linear modes. In the metallic phase, the presence of narrow spectral peaks is significantly suppressed. We argue that the model captures main features observed for random lasers.

Crisis contagion in the world trade network

We present a model of worldwide crisis contagion based on the Google matrix analysis of the world trade network obtained from the UN Comtrade database. The fraction of bankrupted countries exhibits an \textit{on-off} phase transition governed by a bankruptcy threshold $κ$ related to the trade balance of the countries. For $κ>κ_c$, the contagion is circumscribed to less than 10\% of the countries, whereas, for $κ<κ_c$, the crisis is global with about 90\% of the countries going to bankruptcy. We measure the total cost of the crisis during the contagion process. In addition to providing contagion scenarios, our model allows to probe the structural trading dependencies between countries. For different networks extracted from the world trade exchanges of the last two decades, the global crisis comes from the Western world. In particular, the source of the global crisis is systematically the Old Continent and The Americas (mainly US and Mexico). Besides the economy of Australia, those of Asian countries, such as China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, are the last to fall during the contagion. Also, the four BRIC are among the most robust countries to the world trade crisis.

Electron pairing by Coulomb repulsion in narrow band structures

We study analytically and numerically dynamics and eigenstates of two electrons with Coulomb repulsion on a tight-binding lattice in one and two dimensions. The total energy and momentum of electrons are conserved and we show that for a certain momentum range the dynamics is exactly reduced to an evolution in an effective narrow energy band where the energy conservation forces the two electrons to propagate together through the whole system at moderate or even weak repulsion strength. We argue that such a mechanism of electron pair formation by the repulsive Coulomb interaction is rather generic and that it can be at the origin of unconventional superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene.

Properties of phonon modes of ion trap quantum computer in the Aubry phase

We study analytically and numerically the properties of phonon modes in an ion quantum computer. The ion chain is placed in a harmonic trap with an additional periodic potential which dimensionless amplitude $K$ determines three main phases available for quantum computations: at zero $K$ we have the case of Cirac-Zoller quantum computer, below a certain critical amplitude $K<K_c$ the ions are in the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) phase, with delocalized phonon modes and free chain sliding, and above the critical amplitude $K>K_c$ ions are in the pinned Aubry phase with a finite frequency gap protecting quantum gates from temperature and other external fluctuations. For the Aubry phase, in contrast to the Cirac-Zoller and KAM phases, the phonon gap remains independent of the number of ions placed in the trap keeping a fixed ion density around the trap center. We show that in the Aubry phase the phonon modes are much better localized comparing to the Cirac-Zoller and KAM cases. Thus in the Aubry phase the recoil pulses lead to local oscillations of ions while in other two phases they spread rapidly over the whole ion chains making them rather sensible to external fluctuations. We argue that the properties of localized phonon modes and phonon gap in the Aubry phase provide advantages for the ion quantum computations in this phase with a large number of ions.

Thermoelectricity modeling with cold dipole atoms in Aubry phase of optical lattice

We study analytically and numerically the thermoelectric properties of a chain of cold atoms with dipole-dipole interactions placed in an optical periodic potential. At small potential amplitudes the chain slides freely that corresponds to the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser phase of integrable curves of a symplectic map. Above a certain critical amplitude the chain is pinned by the lattice being in the cantori Aubry phase. We show that the Aubry phase is characterized by exceptional thermoelectric properties with the figure of merit ZT = 25 being ten times larger than the maximal value reached in material science experiments. We show that this system is well accessible for magneto-dipole cold atom experiments that opens new prospects for investigations of thermoelectricity.

Contagion in Bitcoin networks

We construct the Google matrices of bitcoin transactions for all year quarters during the period of January 11, 2009 till April 10, 2013. During the last quarters the network size contains about 6 million users (nodes) with about 150 million transactions. From PageRank and CheiRank probabilities, analogous to trade import and export, we determine the dimensionless trade balance of each user and model the contagion propagation on the network assuming that a user goes bankrupt if its balance exceeds a certain dimensionless threshold $κ$. We find that the phase transition takes place for $κ<κ_c\approx0.1$ with almost all users going bankrupt. For $κ>0.55$ almost all users remain safe. We find that even on a distance from the critical threshold $κ_c$ the top PageRank and CheiRank users, as a house of cards, rapidly drop to the bankruptcy. We attribute this effect to strong interconnections between these top users which we determine with the reduced Google matrix algorithm. This algorithm allows to establish efficiently the direct and indirect interactions between top PageRank users. We argue that this study models the contagion on real financial networks.

Evaporative cooling and self-thermalization in an open system of interacting fermions

We study depletion dynamics of an open system of weakly interacting fermions with two-body random interactions. In this model fermions are escaping from the high-energy one-particle orbitals, that mimics the evaporation process used in laboratory experiments with neutral atoms to cool them to ultra-low temperatures. It is shown that due to dynamical thermalization the system instantaneously adjusts to the new chemical potential and temperature, so that occupation numbers of the one-particle orbitals always obey the Fermi-Dirac distribution. In this way we are able to describe the evaporation process which leads to a significant cooling of particles remaining inside the system. We also briefly discuss the evaporation process in the SYK black hole model that corresponds to strongly interacting fermions.

Google matrix analysis of bi-functional SIGNOR network of protein-protein interactions

Directed protein networks with only a few thousand of nodes are rather complex and do not allow to extract easily the effective influence of one protein to another taking into account all indirect pathways via the global network. Furthermore, the different types of activation and inhibition actions between proteins provide a considerable challenge in the frame work of network analysis. At the same time these protein interactions are of crucial importance and at the heart of cellular functioning. We develop the Google matrix analysis of the protein-protein network from the open public database SIGNOR. The developed approach takes into account the bi-functional activation or inhibition nature of interactions between each pair of proteins describing it in the frame work of Ising-spin matrix transitions. We also apply a recently developed linear response theory for the Google matrix which highlights a pathway of proteins whose PageRank probabilities are most sensitive with respect to two proteins selected for the analysis. This group of proteins is analyzed by the reduced Google matrix algorithm which allows to determine the effective interactions between them due to direct and indirect pathways in the global network. We show that the dominating activation or inhibition function of each protein can be characterized by its magnetization. The results of this Google matrix analysis are presented for three examples of selected pairs of proteins. The developed methods work rapidly and efficiently even for networks with several million of nodes and can be applied to various biological networks.

Thermoelectric properties of Wigner crystal in two-dimensional periodic potential

We study numerically transport and thermoelectric properties of electrons placed in a two-dimensional (2D) periodic potential. Our results show that the transition from sliding to pinned phase takes place at a certain critical amplitude of lattice potential being similar to the Aubry transition for the one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model. We show that the 2D Aubry pinned phase is characterized by high values of Seebeck coefficient S = 12. At the same time we find that the value of Seebeck coefficient is significantly influenced by the geometry of periodic potential. We discuss possibilities to test the properties of 2D Aubry phase with electrons on a surface of liquid helium.

Dynamics and thermalization of Bose-Einstein condensate in Sinai oscillator trap

We study numerically the evolution of Bose-Einstein condensate in the Sinai oscillator trap described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two dimensions. In the absence of interactions this trap mimics the properties of Sinai billiards where the classical dynamics is chaotic and the quantum evolution is described by generic properties of quantum chaos and random matrix theory. We show that, above a certain border, the nonlinear interactions between atoms lead to the emergence of dynamical thermalization which generates the statistical Bose-Einstein distribution over eigenmodes of the system without interactions. Below the thermalization border the evolution remains quasi-integrable. Such a Sinai oscillator trap, formed by the oscillator potential and a repulsive disk located in the vicinity of the center, had been already realized in rst experiments with the Bose-Einstein condensate formation by Ketterle group in 1995 and we argue that it can form a convenient test bed for experimental investigations of dynamical of thermalization. Possible links and implications for Kolmogorov turbulence in absence of noise are also discussed.

Google matrix analysis of directed networks

In past ten years, modern societies developed enormous communication and social networks. Their classification and information retrieval processing become a formidable task for the society. Due to the rapid growth of World Wide Web, social and communication networks, new mathematical methods have been invented to characterize the properties of these networks on a more detailed and precise level. Various search engines are essentially using such methods. It is highly important to develop new tools to classify and rank enormous amount of network information in a way adapted to internal network structures and characteristics. This review describes the Google matrix analysis of directed complex networks demonstrating its efficiency on various examples including World Wide Web, Wikipedia, software architecture, world trade, social and citation networks, brain neural networks, DNA sequences and Ulam networks. The analytical and numerical matrix methods used in this analysis originate from the fields of Markov chains, quantum chaos and Random Matrix theory.

Wikipedia mining of hidden links between political leaders

We describe a new method of reduced Google matrix which allows to establish direct and hidden links between a subset of nodes of a large directed network. This approach uses parallels with quantum scattering theory, developed for processes in nuclear and mesoscopic physics and quantum chaos. The method is applied to the Wikipedia networks in different language editions analyzing several groups of political leaders of USA, UK, Germany, France, Russia and G20. We demonstrate that this approach allows to recover reliably direct and hidden links among political leaders. We argue that the reduced Google matrix method can form the mathematical basis for studies in social and political sciences analyzing Leader-Members eXchange (LMX).

Wikipedia Ranking of World Universities

We use the directed networks between articles of 24 Wikipedia language editions for producing the Wikipedia Ranking of World Universities (WRWU) using PageRank, 2DRank and CheiRank algorithms. This approach allows to incorporate various cultural views on world universities using the mathematical statistical analysis independent of cultural preferences. The Wikipedia ranking of top 100 universities provides about 60 percent overlap with the Shanghai university ranking demonstrating the reliable features of this approach. At the same time WRWU incorporates all knowledge accumulated at 24 Wikipedia editions giving stronger highlights for historically important universities leading to a different estimation of efficiency of world countries in university education. The historical development of university ranking is analyzed during ten centuries of their history.

Dynamical thermalization in Bose-Hubbard systems

We numerically study a Bose-Hubbard ring of finite size with disorder containing a finite number of bosons that are subject to an on-site two-body interaction. Our results show that moderate interactions induce dynamical thermalization in this isolated system. In this regime the individual many-body eigenstates are well described by the standard thermal Bose-Einstein distribution for well-defined values of the temperature and the chemical potential which depend on the eigenstate under consideration. We show that the dynamical thermalization conjecture works well both at positive and negative temperatures. The relations to quantum chaos, quantum ergodicity and to the Aberg criterion are also discussed.

Dynamical thermalization of Bose-Einstein condensate in Bunimovich stadium

We study numerically the wavefunction evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a Bunimovich stadium billiard being governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show that for a moderate nonlinearity, above a certain threshold, there is emergence of dynamical thermalization which leads to the Bose-Einstein probability distribution over the linear eigenmodes of the stadium. This distribution is drastically different from the energy equipartition over oscillator degrees of freedom which would lead to the ultra-violet catastrophe. We argue that this interesting phenomenon can be studied in cold atom experiments.

Freed by interaction kinetic states in the Harper model

We study the problem of two interacting particles in a one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice of the Harper model. We show that a short or long range interaction between particles leads to emergence of delocalized pairs in the non-interacting localized phase. The properties of these Freed by Interaction Kinetic States (FIKS) are analyzed numerically including the advanced Arnoldi method. We find that the number of sites populated by FIKS pairs grows algebraically with the system size with the maximal exponent $b=1$, up to a largest lattice size $N=10946$ reached in our numerical simulations, thus corresponding to a complete delocalization of pairs. For delocalized FIKS pairs the spectral properties of such quasiperiodic operators represent a deep mathematical problem. We argue that FIKS pairs can be detected in the framework of recent cold atom experiments [M.~Schreiber {\it et al.} Science {\bf 349}, 842 (2015)] by a simple setup modification. We also discuss possible implications of FIKS pairs for electron transport in the regime of charge-density wave and high $T_c$ superconductivity.

Google matrix analysis of the multiproduct world trade network

Using the United Nations COMTRADE database \cite{comtrade} we construct the Google matrix $G$ of multiproduct world trade between the UN countries and analyze the properties of trade flows on this network for years 1962 - 2010. This construction, based on Markov chains, treats all countries on equal democratic grounds independently of their richness and at the same time it considers the contributions of trade products proportionally to their trade volume. We consider the trade with 61 products for up to 227 countries. The obtained results show that the trade contribution of products is asymmetric: some of them are export oriented while others are import oriented even if the ranking by their trade volume is symmetric in respect to export and import after averaging over all world countries. The construction of the Google matrix allows to investigate the sensitivity of trade balance in respect to price variations of products, e.g. petroleum and gas, taking into account the world connectivity of trade links. The trade balance based on PageRank and CheiRank probabilities highlights the leading role of China and other BRICS countries in the world trade in recent years. We also show that the eigenstates of $G$ with large eigenvalues select specific trade communities.

Opinion formation driven by PageRank node influence on directed networks

We study a two states opinion formation model driven by PageRank node influence and report an extensive numerical study on how PageRank affects collective opinion formations in large-scale empirical directed networks. In our model the opinion of a node can be updated by the sum of its neighbor nodes' opinions weighted by the node influence of the neighbor nodes at each step. We consider PageRank probability and its sublinear power as node influence measures and investigate evolution of opinion under various conditions. First, we observe that all networks reach steady state opinion after a certain relaxation time. This time scale is decreasing with the heterogeneity of node influence in the networks. Second, we find that our model shows consensus and non-consensus behavior in steady state depending on types of networks: Web graph, citation network of physics articles, and LiveJournal social network show non-consensus behavior while Wikipedia article network shows consensus behavior. Third, we find that a more heterogeneous influence distribution leads to a more uniform opinion state in the cases of Web graph, Wikipedia, and Livejournal. However, the opposite behavior is observed in the citation network. Finally we identify that a small number of influential nodes can impose their own opinion on significant fraction of other nodes in all considered networks. Our study shows that the effects of heterogeneity of node influence on opinion formation can be significant and suggests further investigations on the interplay between node influence and collective opinion in networks.

Statistical analysis of NOMAO customer votes for spots of France

We investigate the statistical properties of votes of customers for spots of France collected by the startup company NOMAO. The frequencies of votes per spot and per customer are characterized by a power law distributions which remain stable on a time scale of a decade when the number of votes is varied by almost two orders of magnitude. Using the computer science methods we explore the spectrum and the eigenvalues of a matrix containing user ratings to geolocalized items. Eigenvalues nicely map to large towns and regions but show certain level of instability as we modify the interpretation of the underlying matrix. We evaluate imputation strategies that provide improved prediction performance by reaching geographically smooth eigenvectors. We point on possible links between distribution of votes and the phenomenon of self-organized criticality.

Destruction of Anderson localization by nonlinearity in kicked rotator at different effective dimensions

We study numerically the frequency modulated kicked nonlinear rotator with effective dimension $d=1,2,3,4$. We follow the time evolution of the model up to $10^9$ kicks and determine the exponent $α$ of subdiffusive spreading which changes from $0.35$ to $0.5$ when the dimension changes from $d=1$ to $4$. All results are obtained in a regime of relatively strong Anderson localization well below the Anderson transition point existing for $d=3,4$. We explain that this variation of the exponent is different from the usual $d-$dimensional Anderson models with local nonlinearity where $α$ drops with increasing $d$. We also argue that the renormalization arguments proposed by Cherroret N et al. arXiv:1401.1038 are not valid.

Google matrix of the citation network of Physical Review

We study the statistical properties of spectrum and eigenstates of the Google matrix of the citation network of Physical Review for the period 1893 - 2009. The main fraction of complex eigenvalues with largest modulus is determined numerically by different methods based on high precision computations with up to $p=16384$ binary digits that allows to resolve hard numerical problems for small eigenvalues. The nearly nilpotent matrix structure allows to obtain a semi-analytical computation of eigenvalues. We find that the spectrum is characterized by the fractal Weyl law with a fractal dimension $d_f \approx 1$. It is found that the majority of eigenvectors are located in a localized phase. The statistical distribution of articles in the PageRank-CheiRank plane is established providing a better understanding of information flows on the network. The concept of ImpactRank is proposed to determine an influence domain of a given article. We also discuss the properties of random matrix models of Perron-Frobenius operators.

Interactions of cultures and top people of Wikipedia from ranking of 24 language editions

Wikipedia is a huge global repository of human knowledge, that can be leveraged to investigate interwinements between cultures. With this aim, we apply methods of Markov chains and Google matrix, for the analysis of the hyperlink networks of 24 Wikipedia language editions, and rank all their articles by PageRank, 2DRank and CheiRank algorithms. Using automatic extraction of people names, we obtain the top 100 historical figures, for each edition and for each algorithm. We investigate their spatial, temporal, and gender distributions in dependence of their cultural origins. Our study demonstrates not only the existence of skewness with local figures, mainly recognized only in their own cultures, but also the existence of global historical figures appearing in a large number of editions. By determining the birth time and place of these persons, we perform an analysis of the evolution of such figures through 35 centuries of human history for each language, thus recovering interactions and entanglement of cultures over time. We also obtain the distributions of historical figures over world countries, highlighting geographical aspects of cross-cultural links. Considering historical figures who appear in multiple editions as interactions between cultures, we construct a network of cultures and identify the most influential cultures according to this network.

We study the structural properties of the neural network of the C.elegans (worm) from a directed graph point of view. The Google matrix analysis is used to characterize the neuron connectivity structure and node classifications are discussed and compared with physiological properties of the cells. Our results are obtained by a proper definition of neural directed network and subsequent eigenvector analysis which recovers some results of previous studies. The applications of PageRank, CheiRank and ImpactRank to characterization of interdependency of neurons are discussed.

Google matrix analysis of DNA sequences

For DNA sequences of various species we construct the Google matrix G of Markov transitions between nearby words composed of several letters. The statistical distribution of matrix elements of this matrix is shown to be described by a power law with the exponent being close to those of outgoing links in such scale-free networks as the World Wide Web (WWW). At the same time the sum of ingoing matrix elements is characterized by the exponent being significantly larger than those typical for WWW networks. This results in a slow algebraic decay of the PageRank probability determined by the distribution of ingoing elements. The spectrum of G is characterized by a large gap leading to a rapid relaxation process on the DNA sequence networks. We introduce the PageRank proximity correlator between different species which determines their statistical similarity from the view point of Markov chains. The properties of other eigenstates of the Google matrix are also discussed. Our results establish scale-free features of DNA sequence networks showing their similarities and distinctions with the WWW and linguistic networks.

Highlighting Entanglement of Cultures via Ranking of Multilingual Wikipedia Articles

How different cultures evaluate a person? Is an important person in one culture is also important in the other culture? We address these questions via ranking of multilingual Wikipedia articles. With three ranking algorithms based on network structure of Wikipedia, we assign ranking to all articles in 9 multilingual editions of Wikipedia and investigate general ranking structure of PageRank, CheiRank and 2DRank. In particular, we focus on articles related to persons, identify top 30 persons for each rank among different editions and analyze distinctions of their distributions over activity fields such as politics, art, science, religion, sport for each edition. We find that local heroes are dominant but also global heroes exist and create an effective network representing entanglement of cultures. The Google matrix analysis of network of cultures shows signs of the Zipf law distribution. This approach allows to examine diversity and shared characteristics of knowledge organization between cultures. The developed computational, data driven approach highlights cultural interconnections in a new perspective.

Poincaré recurrences and Ulam method for the Chirikov standard map

We study numerically the statistics of Poincaré recurrences for the Chirikov standard map and the separatrix map at parameters with a critical golden invariant curve. The properties of recurrences are analyzed with the help of a generalized Ulam method. This method allows to construct the corresponding Ulam matrix whose spectrum and eigenstates are analyzed by the powerful Arnoldi method. We also develop a new survival Monte Carlo method which allows us to study recurrences on times changing by ten orders of magnitude. We show that the recurrences at long times are determined by trajectory sticking in a vicinity of the critical golden curve and secondary resonance structures. The values of Poincaré exponents of recurrences are determined for the two maps studied. We also discuss the localization properties of eigenstates of the Ulam matrix and their relation with the Poincaré recurrences.

Quantum Gibbs distribution from dynamical thermalization in classical nonlinear lattices

We study numerically time evolution in classical lattices with weak or moderate nonlinearity which leads to interactions between linear modes. Our results show that in a certain strength range a moderate nonlinearity generates a dynamical thermalization process which drives the system to the quantum Gibbs distribution of probabilities, or average oscillation amplitudes. The effective dynamical temperature of the lattice varies from large positive to large negative values depending on energy of initially excited modes. This quantum Gibbs distribution is drastically different from usually expected energy equipartition over linear modes corresponding to a regime of classical thermalization. Possible experimental observations of this dynamical thermalization are discussed for cold atoms in optical lattices, nonlinear photonic lattices and optical fiber arrays.

Time evolution of Wikipedia network ranking

We study the time evolution of ranking and spectral properties of the Google matrix of English Wikipedia hyperlink network during years 2003 - 2011. The statistical properties of ranking of Wikipedia articles via PageRank and CheiRank probabilities, as well as the matrix spectrum, are shown to be stabilized for 2007 - 2011. A special emphasis is done on ranking of Wikipedia personalities and universities. Ecological analysis of world trade

Ecological systems have a high level of complexity combined with stability and rich biodiversity. Recently, the analysis of their properties and evolution has been pushed forward on a basis of concept of mutualistic networks that provides a detailed understanding of their features being linked to a high nestedness of these networks. It was shown that the nestedness architecture of mutualistic networks of plants and their pollinators minimizes competition and increases biodiversity. Here, using the United Nations COMTRADE database for years 1962 - 2009, we show that a similar ecological analysis gives a valuable description of the world trade. In fact the countries and trade products are analogous to plants and pollinators, and the whole trade network is characterized by a low nestedness temperature which is typical for the ecological networks. This approach provides new mutualistic features of the world trade highlighting new significance of countries and trade products for the world trade.

PageRank model of opinion formation on social networks

We propose the PageRank model of opinion formation and investigate its rich properties on real directed networks of Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, LiveJournal and Twitter. In this model the opinion formation of linked electors is weighted with their PageRank probability. We find that the society elite, corresponding to the top PageRank nodes, can impose its opinion to a significant fraction of the society. However, for a homogeneous distribution of two opinions there exists a bistability range of opinions which depends on a conformist parameter characterizing the opinion formation. We find that LiveJournal and Twitter networks have a stronger tendency to a totalitar opinion formation. We also analyze the Sznajd model generalized for scale-free networks with the weighted PageRank vote of electors.

Symmetry breaking for ratchet transport in presence of interactions and magnetic field

We study the microwave induced ratchet transport of two-dimensional electrons on an oriented semidisk Galton board. The magnetic field symmetries of ratchet transport are analyzed in presence of electron-electron interactions. Our results show that a magnetic field asymmetric ratchet current can appear due to two contributions, a Hall drift of the rectified current that depends only weakly on electron-electron interactions and a breaking of the time reversal symmetry due to the combined effects of interactions and magnetic field. In the latter case, the asymmetry between positive and negative magnetic fields vanishes in the weak interaction limit. We also discuss the recent experimental results on ratchet transport in asymmetric nanostructures.

Towards two-dimensional search engines

We study the statistical properties of various directed networks using ranking of their nodes based on the dominant vectors of the Google matrix known as PageRank and CheiRank. On average PageRank orders nodes proportionally to a number of ingoing links, while CheiRank orders nodes proportionally to a number of outgoing links. In this way the ranking of nodes becomes two-dimensional that paves the way for development of two-dimensional search engines of new type. Statistical properties of information flow on PageRank-CheiRank plane are analyzed for networks of British, French and Italian Universities, Wikipedia, Linux Kernel, gene regulation and other networks. A special emphasis is done for British Universities networks using the large database publicly available at UK. Methods of spam links control are also analyzed.

Arnold cat map, Ulam method and time reversal

We study the properties of the Arnold cap map on a torus with a several periodic sections using the Ulam method. This approach generates a Markov chain with the Ulam matrix approximant. We study numerically the spectrum and eigenstates of this matrix showing their relation with the Fokker-Plank relaxation and the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. We show that, in the frame of the Ulam method, the time reversal property of the map is preserved only on a short Ulam time which grows only logarithmically with the matrix size. Parallels with the evolution in a regime of quantum chaos are also discussed.

Google matrix of the world trade network

Using the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database [http://comtrade.un.org/db/] we construct the Google matrix of the world trade network and analyze its properties for various trade commodities for all countries and all available years from 1962 to 2009. The trade flows on this network are classified with the help of PageRank and CheiRank algorithms developed for the World Wide Web and other large scale directed networks. For the world trade this ranking treats all countries on equal democratic grounds independent of country richness. Still this method puts at the top a group of industrially developed countries for trade in {\it all commodities}. Our study establishes the existence of two solid state like domains of rich and poor countries which remain stable in time, while the majority of countries are shown to be in a gas like phase with strong rank fluctuations. A simple random matrix model provides a good description of statistical distribution of countries in two-dimensional rank plane. The comparison with usual ranking by export and import highlights new features and possibilities of our approach.

Relativistic graphene ratchet on semidisk Galton board

Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations we study numerically and analytically a photogalvanic effect, or ratchet, of directed electron transport induced by a microwave radiation on a semidisk Galton board of antidots in graphene. A comparison between usual two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and electrons in graphene shows that ratchet currents are comparable at very low temperatures. However, a large mean free path in graphene should allow to have a strong ratchet transport at room temperatures. Also in graphene the ratchet transport emerges even for unpolarized radiation. These properties open promising possibilities for room temperature graphene based sensitive photogalvanic detectors of microwave and terahertz radiation.

Ulam method and fractal Weyl law for Perron--Frobenius operators

We use the Ulam method to study spectral properties of the Perron-Frobenius operators of dynamical maps in a chaotic regime. For maps with absorption we show that the spectrum is characterized by the fractal Weyl law recently established for nonunitary operators describing poles of quantum chaotic scattering with the Weyl exponent $ν=d-1$, where $d$ is the fractal dimension of corresponding strange set of trajectories nonescaping in future times. In contrast, for dissipative maps we find the Weyl exponent $ν=d/2$ where $d$ is the fractal dimension of strange attractor. The Weyl exponent can be also expressed via the relation $ν=d_0/2$ where $d_0$ is the fractal dimension of the invariant sets. We also discuss the properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of such operators characterized by the fractal Weyl law.

Ulam method for the Chirikov standard map

We introduce a generalized Ulam method and apply it to symplectic dynamical maps with a divided phase space. Our extensive numerical studies based on the Arnoldi method show that the Ulam approximant of the Perron-Frobenius operator on a chaotic component converges to a continuous limit. Typically, in this regime the spectrum of relaxation modes is characterized by a power law decay for small relaxation rates. Our numerical data show that the exponent of this decay is approximately equal to the exponent of Poincaré recurrences in such systems. The eigenmodes show links with trajectories sticking around stability islands.

Quantum chaos algorithms and dissipative decoherence with quantum trajectories

Using the methods of quantum trajectories we investigate the effects of dissipative decoherence in a quantum computer algorithm simulating dynamics in various regimes of quantum chaos including dynamical localization, quantum ergodic regime and quasi-integrable motion. As an example we use the quantum sawtooth algorithm which can be implemented in a polynomial number of quantum gates. It is shown that the fidelity of quantum computation decays exponentially with time and that the decay rate is proportional to the number of qubits, number of quantum gates and per gate dissipation rate induced by external decoherence. In the limit of strong dissipation the quantum algorithm generates a quantum attractor which may have complex or simple structure. We also compare the effects of dissipative decoherence with the effects of static imperfections.
