A Scaling Limit for Line and Surface Defects

We study symmetry-breaking line defects in the Wilson-Fisher theory with $O(2N+1)$ global symmetry near four dimensions and symmetry-preserving surface defects in a cubic model with $O(2N)$ global symmetry near six dimensions. We introduce a scaling limit inspired by the large charge expansion in Conformal Field Theory. Using this, we compute the beta function for the defect coupling which allows to identify the corresponding Defect Conformal Field Theories. We also compute the correlation function of two parallel defects as well as correlation functions of certain defect operators with large charge under the surviving symmetry.

Quivers, Lattice Gauge Theories and Fractons

We argue that quiver gauge theories with $SU(N)$ gauge groups give rise to lattice gauge theories with matter possessing fractonic properties, where the lattice is the quiver itself. This idea extends a recent proposal by Razamat. This class of theories exhibit a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ 1-form global symmetry that can be used to classify their phases. The order parameter of this transition is the expectation value of Wilson loops, which correspond to mesonic operators in the underlying quiver gauge theory. We discuss how this perspective naturally fits with the deconstruction of a higher dimensional theory.

Correlation functions in scalar field theory at large charge

We compute general higher-point functions in the sector of large charge operators $ϕ^n$, $\barϕ^n$ at large charge in $O(2)$ $(\bar ϕϕ)^2$ theory. We find that there is a special class of "extremal" correlators having only one insertion of $\bar ϕ^n$ that have a remarkably simple form in the double-scaling limit $n\to \infty $ at fixed $g\,n^2\equiv λ$, where $g\simε$ is the coupling at the $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher fixed point in $4-ε$ dimensions. In this limit, also non-extremal correlators can be computed. As an example, we give the complete formula for $ \langle ϕ(x_1)^{n}\,ϕ(x_2)^{n}\,\barϕ(x_3)^{n}\,\barϕ(x_4)^{n}\rangle$, which reveals an interesting structure.

Discrete gauge theories of charge conjugation

We define gauge theories whose gauge group includes charge conjugation as well as standard $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ transformations. When combined, these transformations form a novel type of group with a semidirect product structure. For $N$ even, we show that there are exactly two possible such groups which we dub $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N)_{\mathrm{I,II}}$. We construct the transformation rules for the fundamental and adjoint representations, allowing us to explicitly build four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories based on $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N)_{\mathrm{I,II}}$ and understand from first principles their global symmetry. We compute the Haar measure on the groups, which allows us to quantitatively study the operator content in protected sectors by means of the superconformal index. In particular, we find that both types of $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N)_{\mathrm{I,II}}$ groups lead to non-freely generated Coulomb branches.

On the UV completion of the $O(N)$ model in $6-ε$ dimensions: a stable large-charge sector

We study large charge sectors in the $O(N)$ model in $6-ε$ dimensions. For $4<d<6$, in perturbation theory, the quartic $O(N)$ theory has a UV stable fixed point at large $N$. It was recently argued that this fixed point can be described in terms of an IR fixed point of a cubic $O(N)$ model. By considering a double scaling limit of large charge and weak couplings, we compute two-point and all "extremal" higher-point correlation functions for large charge operators and find a precise equivalence between both pictures. Instanton instabilities are found to be exponentially suppressed at large charge. We also consider correlation function of $U(1)$-invariant meson operators in the $O(2N)\supset U(1)\times SU(N)$ theory, as a first step towards tests of (higher spin) $AdS/CFT$.

Supersymmetric probes in warped $AdS_6$

We consider defects in 5d field theories corresponding to higher-rank generalizations of the $E_{N_f+1}$ theories; holographically dual to the Brandhuber-Oz background in type I' String Theory. We concentrate on codimension 2 and 1 defects, corresponding, respectively, to 3d and 4d defect Quantum Field Theories. We study holographically such defect theories by considering supersymmetric probe D4- and D6-branes in the $AdS_6$, whose fluctuations allow us to study the spectrum of mesonic operators of the defect theories. In the case of D4-branes, we also consider wrappings in the internal space which can be regarded as generalizations of the configurations capturing the antisymmetric Wilson loop.

Large N Correlation Functions in Superconformal Field Theories

We compute correlation functions of chiral primary operators in N=2 superconformal theories at large N using a construction based on supersymmetric localization recently developed by Gerchkovitz et al. We focus on N=4 SYM as well as on superconformal QCD. In the case of N=4 we recover the free field theory results as expected due to non-renormalization theorems. In the case of superconformal QCD we study the planar expansion in the large N limit. The final correlators admit a simple generalization to a finite N formula which exactly matches the various small $N$ results in the literature.

The NS limit of the 5D Superconformal Index

We consider the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit of the five-dimensional superconformal index and propose a novel prescription for selecting the finite contributions. Applying the latter to various examples of U(1) theories, we find that the 5D NS index can be reproduced using recent techniques of Córdova and Shao, who related the 4D Schur index to the BPS spectrum of the theory on the Coulomb branch. In this picture, the 5D instanton solitons are interpreted as additional flavour nodes in an associated 5D BPS quiver.

Aspects of the moduli space of instantons on $\mathbb{C}P^2$ and its orbifolds

We study the moduli space of self-dual instantons on $\mathbb{C}P^2$. These are described by an ADHM-like construction which allows to compute the Hilbert series of the moduli space. The latter has been found to be blind to certain compact directions. In this paper we probe these, finding them to correspond to a Grassmanian, upon considering appropriate ungaugings. Moreover, the ADHM-like construction can be embedded into a $3d$ gauge theory with a known gravity dual. Using this, we realize in $AdS_4/CFT_3$ (part of) the instanton moduli space providing at the same time further evidence supporting the $AdS_4/CFT_3$ duality. Moreover, upon orbifolding, we provide the ADHM-like construction of instantons on $\mathbb{C}P^2/\mathbb{Z}_n$ as well as compute its Hilbert series. As in the unorbifolded case, these turn out to coincide with those for instantons on $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_n$.

Rigid Supersymmetry from Conformal Supergravity in Five Dimensions

We study the rigid limit of 5d conformal supergravity with minimal supersymmetry on Riemannian manifolds. The necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a solution is the existence of a conformal Killing vector. Whenever a certain $SU(2)$ curvature becomes abelian the backgrounds define a transversally holomorphic foliation. Subsequently we turn to the question under which circumstances these backgrounds admit a kinetic Yang-Mills term in the action of a vector multiplet. Here we find that the conformal Killing vector has to be Killing. We supplement the discussion with various appendices.

The ADHM-like Constructions for Instantons on CP^2 and Three Dimensional Gauge Theories

We study the moduli spaces of self-dual instantons on CP^2 in a simple group G. When G is a classical group, these instanton solutions can be realised using ADHM-like constructions which can be naturally embedded into certain three dimensional quiver gauge theories with 4 supercharges. The topological data for such instanton bundles and their relations to the quiver gauge theories are described. Based on such gauge theory constructions, we compute the Hilbert series of the moduli spaces of instantons that correspond to various configurations. The results turn out to be equal to the Hilbert series of their counterparts on C^2 upon an appropriate mapping, in agreement with the result of [arXiv:0802.3120]. We check the former against the Hilbert series derived from the blowup formula for the Hirzebruch surface F_1 and find an agreement. The connection between the moduli spaces of instantons on such two spaces is explained in detail.

5-Brane Webs, Symmetry Enhancement, and Duality in 5d Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

We present a number of investigations of 5d ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories that make use of 5-brane web constructions and the 5d superconformal index. These include an observation of enhanced global symmetry in the 5d fixed point theory corresponding to $SU(N)$ gauge theory with Chern-Simons level $\pm N$, enhanced global symmetries in quiver theories, and dualities between quiver theories and non-quiver theories. Instanton contributions play a crucial role throughout.

Gauge/gravity duality and RG flows in 5d gauge theories

We discuss RG flows in 5d gauge theories triggered either by VEV's of mesonic or baryonic operators. As a warm-up, we explicitly discuss the counterpart of these flows in 4d gauge theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry by focusing on the $A_1$ theory. As opposed to the $\mathcal{N}=1$ case, in cases with 8 supercharges we need to solve a more involved PDE. In the 5d case the boundary conditions for such equation play a crucial role in order to reproduce the expected spectrum.

Hints of 5d Fixed Point Theories from Non-Abelian T-duality

In this paper we investigate the properties of the putative 5d fixed point theory that should be dual, through the holographic correspondence, to the new supersymmetric AdS(6) solution constructed in Lozano et al. This solution is the result of a non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the known supersymmetric AdS(6) solution of massive Type IIA. The analysis of the charge quantization conditions seems to put constraints on the global properties of the background, which, combined with the information extracted from considering probe branes, suggests a 2-node quiver candidate for the dual CFT.

Partition functions for equivariantly twisted $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories on toric Kähler manifolds

We consider $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric pure gauge theories on toric Kähler manifolds, with particular emphasis on $\mathbb{CP}^2$. By choosing a vector generating a $U(1)$ action inside the torus of the manifold, we construct equivariantly twisted theories. Then, using localization, we compute their supersymmetric partition functions. As expected, these receive contributions from a classical, a one-loop, and an instanton term. It turns out that the one-loop term is trivial and that the instanton contributions are localized at the fixed points of the $U(1)$. In fact the full partition function can be re-written in a factorized form with contributions from each of the fixed points. The full significance of this is yet to be understood.

5d gauge theories on orbifolds and 4d 't Hooft line indices

We study indices for 5d gauge theories on S^1 \times S^4/Z_n. In the large orbifold limit, n \rightarrow \infty, we find evidence that the indices become 4d indices in the presence of a 't Hooft line operator. The non-perturbative part of the index poses some subtleties when being compared to the 4d monopole bubbling which happens in the presence of 't Hooft line operators. We study such monopole bubbling indices and find an interesting connection to the Hilbert series of the moduli space of instantons on an auxiliary ALE space.

5d superconformal indices at large N and holography

We propose a general formula for the perturbative large N superconformal index of 5d quiver fixed point theories that have an AdS(6)xS(4)/Z(n) supergravity dual. This index is obtained from the parent theory by projecting to orbifold-invariant states and adding the twisted sector contributions. Our result agrees with expectations from the dual supergravity description. We test our formula against the direct computation of the index for Z(2) and Z(3) and find complete agreement.

Discrete theta and the 5d superconformal index

5d Yang-Mills theory with an Sp(N) gauge group admits a discrete analog of the theta parameter. We describe the origin of this parameter in N=1 theories from Type I' string theory, and study its effect on the 5d superconformal fixed point theories with an Sp(1)=SU(2) gauge group by computing the superconformal index. Our result confirms the lack of global symmetry enhancement in the so-called \tilde{E}_1 theory.

Hilbert Series for Moduli Spaces of Instantons on C^2/Z_n

We study chiral gauge-invariant operators on moduli spaces of G instantons for any classical group G on A-type ALE spaces using Hilbert Series (HS). Moduli spaces of instantons on an ALE space can be realized as Higgs branches of certain quiver gauge theories which appear as world-volume theories on Dp branes in a Dp-D(p+4) system with the D(p+4) branes (with or without O(p+4) planes) wrapping the ALE space. We study in detail a list of quiver gauge theories which are related to G-instantons of arbitrary ranks and instanton numbers on a generic A_{n-1} ALE space and discuss the corresponding brane configurations. For a large class of theories, we explicitly compute the Higgs branch HS which reveals various algebraic/geometric aspects of the moduli space such as the dimension of the space, generators of the moduli space and relations connecting them. In a large number of examples involving lower rank instantons, we demonstrate that HS for equivalent instantons of isomorphic gauge groups but very different quiver descriptions do indeed agree, as expected.

On the 5d instanton index as a Hilbert series

The superconformal index for N=2 5d theories contains a non-perturbative part arising from 5d instantonic operators which coincides with the Nekrasov instanton partition function. In this note, for pure gauge theories, we elaborate on the relation between such instanton index and the Hilbert series of the instanton moduli space. We propose a non-trivial identification of fugacities allowing the computation of the instanton index through the Hilbert series. We show the agreement of our proposal with existing results in the literature, as well as use it to compute the exact index for a pure U(1) gauge theory.

Supersymmetric AdS_6 via T-duality

We present a new supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of type IIB supergravity with SU(2) isometry. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, this has potentially very interesting implications for 5d fixed point theories. This solution is the result of a non-Abelian T-duality on the known supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of massive IIA. The SU(2) R-symmetry is untouched, leading to sixteen supercharges and preserved supersymmetry.

Brane Geometry and Dimer Models

The field content and interactions of almost all known gauge theories in AdS_5/CFT_4 can be expressed in terms of dimer models or bipartite graphs drawn on a torus. Associated with the fundamental cell is a complex structure parameter tau_R. Based on the brane realization of these theories, we can specify a special Lagrangian (SLag) torus fibration that is the natural candidate to be identified as the torus on which the dimer lives. Using the metrics known in the literature, we compute the complex structure tau_G of this torus. For the theories on C^3 and the conifold and for orbifolds thereof tau_R = tau_G. However, for more complicated examples, we show that the two complex structures cannot be equal and yet, remarkably, differ only by a few percent. We leave the explanation for this extraordinary proximity as an open challenge.

Probing the Higgs branch of 5d fixed point theories with dual giant gravitons in AdS(6)

We consider the warped AdS(6)xS^4/Z_n backgrounds dual to certain 5d quiver gauge theories. By studying dual giant gravitons in the AdS(6) geometry we are able to partially probe the Higgs branch of these theories. We show how the quantization of the phase space of such dual giants coincides with the counting of holomorphic functions on C^2/Z_n, which is the geometric part of the Higgs branch for these theories.

Baryonic symmetries in AdS_4/CFT_3: an overview

Global symmetries play an important role in classifying the spectrum of a gauge theory. In the context of the AdS/CFT duality, global baryon-like symmetries are specially interesting. In the gravity side, they correspond to vector fields in AdS arising from KK reduction of the SUGRA p-form potentials. We concentrate on the AdS_4/CFT_3 case, which presents very interesting characteristic features. Following arXiv:1004.2045, we review aspects of such symmetries, clarifying along the way some arguments in that reference. As a byproduct, and in a slightly unrelated context, we also study Z-minimization, focusing in the HVZ theory.

Charged Particle-like Branes in ABJM: A Summary

We study the effect of adding lower dimensional brane charges to the 't Hooft monopole, di-baryon and baryon vertex configurations in AdS_4 x CP^3. We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, requiring additional fundamental strings to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The dynamics reveal that the charges must lie inside some interval, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in AdS_5 x S^5 with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Some ideas about the existence of these bounds in relation to the stringy exclusion principle are given.

Fuzzy spheres at finite temperature supported by Wilson lines

We study the fate of the fuzzy sphere vacuum solutions in the SU(N)xSU(N+M) Klebanov-Strassler theory at finite temperature and at weak coupling. We find that thermal effects push the S^2 radius --a modulus at T=0-- towards vanishing size. We then show that the fuzzy sphere can be stabilized by adding a temporal Wilson line for a background U(1) gauge field, which can be associated with either the baryonic or the R-symmetry. Thus, upon deforming the KS theory with a background gauge field for a global symmetry, we find a phase of broken baryonic symmetry at weak coupling surviving at finite temperature.

Invariants of Toric Seiberg Duality

Three-branes at a given toric Calabi-Yau singularity lead to different phases of the conformal field theory related by toric (Seiberg) duality. Using the dimer model/brane tiling description in terms of bipartite graphs on a torus, we find a new invariant under Seiberg duality, namely the Klein j-invariant of the complex structure parameter in the distinguished isoradial embedding of the dimer, determined by the physical R-charges. Additional number theoretic invariants are described in terms of the algebraic number field of the R-charges. We also give a new compact description of the a-maximization procedure by introducing a generalized incidence matrix.

The Beta Ansatz: A Tale of Two Complex Structures

Brane tilings, sometimes called dimer models, are a class of bipartite graphs on a torus which encode the gauge theory data of four-dimensional SCFTs dual to D3-branes probing toric Calabi--Yau threefolds. An efficient way of encoding this information exploits the theory of dessin d'enfants, expressing the structure in terms of a permutation triple, which is in turn related to a Belyi pair, namely a holomorphic map from a torus to a P^1 with three marked points. The procedure of a-maximization, in the context of isoradial embeddings of the dimer, also associates a complex structure to the torus, determined by the R-charges in the SCFT, which can be compared with the Belyi complex structure. Algorithms for the explicit construction of the Belyi pairs are described in detail. In the case of orbifolds, these algorithms are related to the construction of covers of elliptic curves, which exploits the properties of Weierstrass elliptic functions. We present a counterexample to a previous conjecture identifying the complex structure of the Belyi curve to the complex structure associated with R-charges.

Toric CFTs, Permutation Triples, and Belyi Pairs

Four-dimensional CFTs dual to branes transverse to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds have been described by bipartite graphs on a torus (dimer models). We use the theory of dessins d'enfants to describe these in terms of triples of permutations which multiply to one. These permutations yield an elegant description of zig-zag paths, which have appeared in characterizing the toroidal dimers that lead to consistent SCFTs. The dessins are also related to Belyi pairs, consisting of a curve equipped with a map to P^1, branched over three points on the P^1. We construct explicit examples of Belyi pairs associated to some CFTs, including C^3 and the conifold. Permutation symmetries of the superpotential are related to the geometry of the Belyi pair. The Artin braid group action and a variation thereof play an interesting role. We make a conjecture relating the complex structure of the Belyi curve to R-charges in the conformal field theory.

Baryonic symmetries and M5 branes in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence

We study U(1) symmetries dual to Betti multiplets in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence for M2 branes at Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities. Analysis of the boundary conditions for vector fields in AdS_4 allows for a choice where wrapped M5 brane states carrying non-zero charge under such symmetries can be considered. We begin by focusing on isolated toric singularities without vanishing six-cycles, and study in detail the cone over Q^{111}. The boundary conditions considered are dual to a CFT where the gauge group is U(1)^2 x SU(N)^4. We find agreement between the spectrum of gauge-invariant baryonic-type operators in this theory and wrapped M5 brane states. Moreover, the physics of vacua in which these symmetries are spontaneously broken precisely matches a dual gravity analysis involving resolutions of the singularity, where we are able to match condensates of the baryonic operators, Goldstone bosons and global strings. We also argue more generally that theories where the resolutions have six-cycles are expected to receive non-perturbative corrections from M5 brane instantons. We give a general formula relating the instanton action to normalizable harmonic two-forms, and compute it explicitly for the Q^{222} example. The holographic interpretation of such instantons is currently unclear.

Charged particle-like branes in ABJM

We study the effect of adding lower dimensional brane charges to the 't Hooft monopole, di-baryon and baryon vertex configurations in $AdS_4 \times \mathbb{P}^3$. We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, and therefore, require additional fundamental strings in order to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The study of the dynamics reveals that the charges must lie inside some interval in order to find well defined configurations, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Our configurations are sensitive to the flat $B$-field recently suggested in the literature. We make some comments on its possible role. We also discuss how these configurations are modified in the presence of a non-zero Romans mass.

M5 spikes and operators in the HVZ membrane theory

In this note we study some aspects of the so-called dual ABJM theory introduced by Hanany, Vegh & Zaffaroni. We analyze the spectrum of chiral operators, and compare it with the spectrum of functions on the mesonic moduli space M=C^2\times C^2/Z_k, finding expected agreement for the coherent branch. A somewhat mysterious extra branch of dimension N^2 opens up at the orbifold fixed point. We also study BPS solutions which represent M2/M5 intersections. The mesonic moduli space suggests that there should be two versions of this spike: one where the M5 lives in the orbifolded C^2 and another where it lives in the unorbifolded one. While expectedly the first class turns out to be like the ABJM spike, the latter class looks like a collection of stacks of M5 branes with fuzzy S^3 profiles. This shows hints of the appearance of the global SO(4) at the non-abelian level which is otherwise not present in the bosonic potential. We also study the matching of SUGRA modes with operators in the coherent branch of the moduli space. As a byproduct, we present some formulae for the laplacian in conical CY_4 of the form C^n\times CY_{4-n}.

p-wave Holographic Superconductors and five-dimensional gauged Supergravity

We explore five-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ $SU(2)\times U(1)$ and ${\cal N}=8$ SO(6) gauged supergravities as frameworks for condensed matter applications. These theories contain charged (dilatonic) black holes and 2-forms which have non-trivial quantum numbers with respect to U(1) subgroups of SO(6). A question of interest is whether they also contain black holes with two-form hair with the required asymptotic to give rise to holographic superconductivity. We first consider the ${\cal N}=4$ case, which contains a complex two-form potential $A_{μν}$ which has U(1) charge $\pm 1$. We find that a slight generalization, where the two-form potential has an arbitrary charge $q$, leads to a five-dimensional model that exhibits second-order superconducting transitions of p-wave type where the role of order parameter is played by $A_{μν}$, provided $q \gtrsim 5.6$. We identify the operator that condenses in the dual CFT, which is closely related to ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory with chemical potentials. Similar phase transitions between R-charged black holes and black holes with 2-form hair are found in a generalized version of the ${\cal N}=8$ gauged supergravity Lagrangian where the two-forms have charge $q\gtrsim 1.8$.

Phenomenological Models of Holographic Superconductors and Hall currents

We study general models of holographic superconductivity parametrized by four arbitrary functions of a neutral scalar field of the bulk theory. The models can accommodate several features of real superconductors, like arbitrary critical temperatures and critical exponents in a certain range, and perhaps impurities, boundary or thickness effects. We find analytical expressions for the critical exponents of the general model and show that they satisfy the Rushbrooke identity. An important subclass of models exhibits second order phase transitions. A study of the specific heat shows that general models can also describe holographic superconductors undergoing first, second and third (or higher) order phase transitions. We discuss how small deformations of the HHH model lead to the appearance of resonance peaks in the conductivity, which become narrower as the temperature is gradually decreased, without the need for tuning mass of the scalar to be close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. Finally, we investigate the inclusion of a generalized "theta term" producing Hall effect without magnetic field.

A general class of holographic superconductors

We introduce a simple generalization of the basic holographic superconductor model in which the spontaneous breaking of a global U(1) symmetry occurs via the Stueckelberg mechanism. This more general setting allows tuning features such as the order of the transition. The physical vacuum of the condensed phase and the order of the transition are determined by a detailed analysis of the free energy of the system. For first order transitions, we identify a metastable phase above the critical temperature. In this case, the conductivity shows additional poles, thus suggesting that the condensate has internal structure. We comment on the possibility of obtaining second order phase transitions with non mean-field critical exponents.

A holographic approach to phase transitions

We provide a description of phase transitions at finite temperature in strongly coupled field theories using holography. For this purpose, we introduce a general class of gravity duals to superconducting theories that exhibit various types of phase transitions (first or second order with both mean and non-mean field behavior) as parameters in their Lagrangian are changed. Moreover the size and strength of the conductivity coherence peak can also be controlled. Our results suggest that certain parameters in the gravitational dual control the interactions responsible for binding the condensate and the magnitude of its fluctuations close to the transition.

Holographic flavor on the Higgs branch

In this paper we study the holographic dual, in several spacetime dimensions, of the Higgs branch of gauge theories with fundamental matter. These theories contain defects of various codimensionalities, where the matter fields are located. In the holographic description the matter is added by considering flavor brane probes in the supergravity backgrounds generated by color branes, while the Higgs branch is obtained when the color and flavor branes recombine with each other. We show that, generically, the holographic dual of the Higgs phase is realized by means of the addition of extra flux on the flavor branes and by choosing their appropriate embedding in the background geometry. This suggests a dielectric interpretation in terms of the color branes, whose vacuum solutions precisely match the F- and D-flatness conditions obtained on the field theory side. We further compute the meson mass spectra in several cases and show that when the defect added has codimension greater than zero it becomes continuous and gapless.

Giant Gravitons and Fuzzy CP^2

In this article we describe the giant graviton configurations in AdS_m x S^n backgrounds that involve 5-spheres, namely, the giant graviton in AdS_4 x S^7 and the dual giant graviton in AdS_7 x S^4, in terms of dielectric gravitational waves. Thus, we conclude the programme initiated in hep-th/0207199 and pursued in hep-th/0303183 and hep-th/0406148 towards the microscopical description of giant gravitons in AdS_m x S^n spacetimes. In our construction the gravitational waves expand due to Myers dielectric effect onto fuzzy 5-spheres which are described as S^1 bundles over fuzzy CP^2. These fuzzy spheres appear as solutions of the matrix model that comes up as the action for M-theory gravitational waves. The validity of our description is checked by confirming the agreement with the Abelian description in terms of a spherical M5-brane when the number of waves goes to infinity.

Giant Gravitons in AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 as Fuzzy Cylinders

Using the non-Abelian action for coincident Type IIB gravitational waves proposed in hep-th/0303183 we show that giant gravitons in the AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 background can be described in terms of coincident waves expanding into a fuzzy cylinder, spanned by two embedding scalars and one worldvolume scalar. This fuzzy cylinder has dipole and magnetic moments with respect to the 2-form and 6-form potentials of the background, and can be interpreted as a bound state of D1-branes and D5-branes (wrapped on the 4-torus) wrapped around the basis of the cylinder. We show the exact agreement between this description and the Abelian, macroscopical description given in the literature.

A Microscopical Description of Giant Gravitons II: The AdS_5 x S^5 Background

In this article we continue with the microscopical investigation of giant graviton configurations in AdS_m x S^n spacetimes, initiated in hep-th/0207199. Using dualities and a Matrix theory derivation we propose an action that describes multiple Type IIB gravitons. This action contains multipole moment couplings to the Type IIB background potentials. Using these couplings, we study, from the microscopical point of view, the giant graviton and dual giant graviton configurations in the AdS_5 x S^5 background. In both cases the gravitons expand into a non-commutative 3-sphere, that is defined as an S^1-bundle over a fuzzy 2-sphere. When the number of gravitons is large we find perfect agreement with the Abelian, macroscopical description of giant gravitons in this spacetime, given in the literature.
