We study the recently proposed AdS7/CFT6 dualities for a class of 6d N=(1,0) theories that flow on the tensor branch to long linear quiver gauge theories. We find a precise agreement in the symmetries and in the spectrum of charged states between the 6d SCFTs and their conjectured AdS7 duals. We also confirm a recent conjecture that a discrete SN symmetry relating the baryons in the quiver theories is in fact gauged.
We revisit the N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories and their supergravity duals in the context of generalized symmetries. This allows us to finally clarify how the SU(N)×SU(N) and (SU(N)×SU(N))/ZN theories, as well as other quotient theories that have recently been discussed, fit into the holographic framework. It also resolves a long standing puzzle regarding the di-baryon operator in the U(N)×U(N) theory.
We clarify certain aspects of instanton operators in five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories. In particular, we show how, in the pointlike limit, they become supersymmetric and provide the natural bridge with the instantonic states contributing to the index as well as with the zero mode counting leading to broken current multiplets.
We explore the properties of five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories living on 5-brane webs in orientifold 7-plane backgrounds. These include USp(2N) and SO(N) gauge theories with fundamental matter, as well as SU(N) gauge theories with symmetric and antisymmetric matter. We find a number of new 5d fixed point theories that feature enhanced global symmetries. We also exhibit a number of new 5d dualities.
In this paper we set out to further explore the connection between isolated N=2 SCFT's in four dimensions and N=1 SCFT's in five dimensions. Using 5-brane webs we are able to provide IR Lagrangian descriptions in terms of 5d gauge theories for several classes of theories including the so-called TN theories. In many of these we find multiple dual gauge theory descriptions. The connection to 4d theories is then used to lift 4d N=2 S-dualities that involve weakly-gauging isolated theories to 5d gauge theory dualities. The 5d description allows one to study the spectrum of BPS operators directly, using for example the superconformal index. This provides additional non-trivial checks of enhanced global symmetries and 4d dualities.
We present a number of investigations of 5d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories that make use of 5-brane web constructions and the 5d superconformal index. These include an observation of enhanced global symmetry in the 5d fixed point theory corresponding to SU(N) gauge theory with Chern-Simons level ±N, enhanced global symmetries in quiver theories, and dualities between quiver theories and non-quiver theories. Instanton contributions play a crucial role throughout.
We propose a general formula for the perturbative large N superconformal index of 5d quiver fixed point theories that have an AdS(6)xS(4)/Z(n) supergravity dual. This index is obtained from the parent theory by projecting to orbifold-invariant states and adding the twisted sector contributions. Our result agrees with expectations from the dual supergravity description. We test our formula against the direct computation of the index for Z(2) and Z(3) and find complete agreement.
5d Yang-Mills theory with an Sp(N) gauge group admits a discrete analog of the theta parameter. We describe the origin of this parameter in N=1 theories from Type I' string theory, and study its effect on the 5d superconformal fixed point theories with an Sp(1)=SU(2) gauge group by computing the superconformal index. Our result confirms the lack of global symmetry enhancement in the so-called \tilde{E}_1 theory.
Gauge/gravity duality is a useful and efficient tool for addressing and studying questions related to strongly interacting systems described by a gauge theory. In this manuscript we will review a number of interesting phenomena that occur in such systems when a background magnetic field is turned on. Specifically, we will discuss holographic models for systems that include matter fields in the fundamental representation of the gauge group, which are incorporated by adding probe branes into the gravitational background dual to the gauge theory. We include three models in this review: the D3-D7 and D4-D8 models, that describe four-dimensional systems, and the D3-D7' model, that describes three-dimensional fermions interacting with a four-dimensional gauge field.
We consider the warped AdS(6)xS^4/Z_n backgrounds dual to certain 5d quiver gauge theories. By studying dual giant gravitons in the AdS(6) geometry we are able to partially probe the Higgs branch of these theories. We show how the quantization of the phase space of such dual giants coincides with the counting of holomorphic functions on C^2/Z_n, which is the geometric part of the Higgs branch for these theories.
We consider a holographic description of a system of strongly-coupled fermions in 2+1 dimensions based on a D7-brane probe in the background of D3-branes. The black hole embedding represents a Fermi-like liquid. We study the excitations of the Fermi liquid system. Above a critical density which depends on the temperature, the system becomes unstable towards an inhomogeneous modulated phase which is similar to a charge density and spin wave state. The essence of this instability can be effectively described by a Maxwell-axion theory with a background electric field. We also consider the fate of zero sound at non-zero temperature.
We describe brane configurations that interpolate between the N=6 AdS4xCP3 background of Type IIA supergravity and the N=0 AdS4xCP3 background of massive Type IIA supergravity. Using the T-dual Type IIB configurations we prove that this leads to unequal Chern-Simons levels in the dual gauge theory, and find the precise relation between the parameters of the gauge theory and the RR fluxes of the background. This provides further evidence for the conjecture of Gaiotto and Tomasiello about the CFT dual of the massive Type IIA background.
We consider a holographic description of a system of strongly coupled fermions in 2+1 dimensions based on a D7-brane probe in the background of D3-branes, and construct stable embeddings by turning on worldvolume fluxes. We study the system at finite temperature and charge density, and in the presence of a background magnetic field. We show that Minkowski-like embeddings that terminate above the horizon describe a family of quantum Hall states with filling fractions that are parameterized by a single discrete parameter. The quantization of the Hall conductivity is a direct consequence of the topological quantization of the fluxes. When the magnetic field is varied relative to the charge density away from these discrete filling fractions, the embeddings deform continuously into black-hole-like embeddings that enter the horizon and that describe metallic states. We also study the thermodynamics of this system and show that there is a first order phase transition at a critical temperature from the quantum Hall state to the metallic state.
We analyze the resolution of the U(1)_A problem in the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic dual of large N_c QCD at finite temperature. It has been shown that in the confining phase the axial symmetry is broken at order 1/N_c, in agreement with the ideas of Witten and Veneziano. We show that in the deconfined phase the axial symmetry remains unbroken to all orders in 1/N_c. In this case the breaking is due to instantons which are described by spacelike D0-branes, in agreement with 'tHooft's resolution. The holographic dual of the symmetry breaking fermion condensate is a state of spacelike strings between the D0-brane and the flavor D8-branes, which result from a spacelike version of the string creation effect. In the intermediate phase of deconfinement with broken chiral symmetry the instanton gas approximation is possibly regulated in the IR, which would imply an eta' mass-squared of order exp(-N_c).
We present qualitative evidence that closed string tachyon solitons describe backgrounds of lower-dimensional sub-critical string theory. We show that a co-dimension one soliton in the low energy effective gravity-dilaton-tachyon theory in general has a flat string-frame metric, and a dilaton that grows in both directions away from the core, and is linear in the soliton worldvolume coordinates. Spacetime, as seen in the Einstein frame, is therefore effectively localized in (D-1)-dimensions, in which the dilaton is linear, in agreement with the linear dilaton background of the (D-1)-dimensional sub-critical string. We construct a number of exactly solvable toy models with specific tachyon potentials that exhibit these features, and address the question of finding solitons in the bosonic closed string field theory using the recent advances in computing the tachyon potential.
Extending the work of Gaiotto, Itzhaki and Rastelli in hep-th/0304192, we derive a general prescription for computing amplitudes involving a periodic array of D-branes in imaginary time to arbitrary order. We use this prescription to show that closed string amplitudes with b boundaries are identical to closed string amplitudes with b additional insertions of a particular physical closed string state. We perform an explicit computation for the annulus, and argue on the basis of open and closed string field theory for higher order amplitudes. We also discuss possible subtleties in the prescription related to collisions of boundaries and insertions, and argue that they are harmless. This verifies the proposal that a periodic array of D-branes in imaginary time corresponds to a pure closed string background.
The cylinder diagrams that determine the static interactions between pairs of Dp-branes in the type IIB plane wave background are evaluated. The resulting expressions are elegant generalizations of the flat-space formulae that depend on the value of the Ramond-Ramond flux of the background in a non-trivial manner. The closed-string and open-string descriptions consistently transform into each other under a modular transformation only when each of the interacting D-branes separately preserves half the supersymmetries. These results are derived for configurations of euclidean signature D(p+1)-instantons but also generalize to lorentzian signature Dp-branes.
The orbifold lines IIA/I_8 and IIB/$I_8 (-1)^{F_L} possess BPS discrete torsion variants which carry fundamental string (NSNS) charge. We show that these variants are actually classified by an integral electric field F from the twisted RR sector, and compute their tension and NSNS charge as a function of F. The analysis employs equivariant K-theory and the string creation phenomenon. The K-theory results demonstrate the corrections to cohomology in the case of torsion; it is found that 8 units of F are invisible at transverse infinity for IIA, and correspondingly 16 units for IIB.
It is shown that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in certain three-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories, by using the s-rule in their string theory realization as brane configurations. In particular, supersymmetry is broken in N=3 supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory with gauge group SU(n) and CS coefficient k, as well as in its N=2 and N=1 deformations, when n>|k|. In addition, supersymmetry is broken in the N=1 mass deformation of N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(n) and one matter multiplet when n>1. In the latter case the breaking is induced by an instanton-generated repulsive potential.
A brief introduction to the boundary state approach to Dirichlet branes is given. The example of the non-BPS D-string of Type IIA on K3 is analysed in some detail, and its dual heterotic state is identified.
A non-supersymmetric ten-dimensional open string theory is constructed as an orbifold of type I string theory, and as an orientifold of the bosonic type B theory. It is purely bosonic, and cancellation of massless tadpoles requires the gauge group to be SO(32)xSO(32). The spectrum of the theory contains a closed string tachyon, and open string tachyons in the (32,32) multiplet. The D-branes of this theory are analyzed, and it is found that the massless excitations of one of the 1-branes coincide with the world-sheet degrees of freedom of the D=26 bosonic string theory compactified on the SO(32) lattice. This suggests that the two theories are related by S-duality.
We review work done in collaboration with C.B. Thorn on Super-Galilei invariant field theory and its application to the reformulation of superstring theory in terms of constituent superstring-bits.
We extend the model of string as a polymer of string bits to the case of superstring. We mainly concentrate on type II-B superstring, with some discussion of the obstacles presented by not II-B superstring, together with possible strategies for surmounting them. As with previous work on bosonic string we work within the light-cone gauge. The bit model possesses a good deal less symmetry than the continuous string theory. For one thing, the bit model is formulated as a Galilei invariant theory in (D−2)+1 dimensional space-time. This means that Poincaré invariance is reduced to the Galilei subgroup in D−2 space dimensions. Naturally the supersymmetry present in the bit model is likewise dramatically reduced. Continuous string can arise in the bit models with the formation of infinitely long polymers of string bits. Under the right circumstances (at the critical dimension) these polymers can behave as string moving in D dimensional space-time enjoying the full N=2 Poincaré supersymmetric dynamics of type II-B superstring.
We extend the Galilei group of space-time transformations by gradation, construct interacting field-theoretic representations of this algebra, and show that non-relativistic Super-Chern-Simons theory is a special case. We also study the generalization to matrix valued fields, which are relevant to the formulation of superstring theory as a 1/Nc expansion of a field theory. We find that in the matrix case, the field theory is much more restricted by the supersymmetry.
